Speaker 1 (00:00):
Call It what It Is with Jessica Capshaw and Camil Lunnington,
an iHeartRadio podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Well, Hello, Hello, Hello.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Hello, Call It crew, and welcome to another episode of
Short and Sweet.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Gray's twentieth anniversary.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Yes, so we have a couple of today, not.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Just twenty seasons, twenty years, Like there's been twenty years
since the first episode aired.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Yeah, so when the first episode aired, I was so,
let me think I was, you were twenty one.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
I guess twenty one.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
I could legally drink for the first time.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
When Grays aired, I was, well, the math would be
math at twenty eight and I was a series regular
honor show called The Practice, and it was concluding, and
I read the pilot for Surgeons and I couldn't go
out for it because I think that I was still
(01:08):
under contract and I like our show was on the bubble.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Oh well, people don't know what the bubble means.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
We should explain it. It was it was maybe gonna
get picked up and maybe not. So I wasn't really
a free agent, and so I couldn't really go out
for pilot season, which is why I didn't. Yeah, I
wonder I would have had. I think probably would have
auditioned for Izzy back then.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Oh yeah, yeah, you would have auditioned for Izzy.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Yeah. But I remember watching it and I remember being
in love with it. I mean love, love, love. I
remember the original intro, the music. Who doesn't love that music?
And it gave me all the feels. And I also felt,
like I've said this many times, it's just it was
the perfect Like the hook at the end hooked me
(01:53):
real good.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
You're talking about the Addison Montgomery showing up.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
And her going to work with her one night stand
after she's unceremoniously was like, get the flock out of here, yes,
and she's like, oh you're my boss. Yes.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
And you know what's really funny is I was scrolling
on TikTok or something the other day, like literally two
days ago, and that scene came up between Ellen and
and Patrick, and it's so they're both so good and
their chemistry is so excellent, like it's really juicy and
they're smiling drill lie Like I was thinking, like, how
(02:30):
would I play it? I'm not sure I would have
played it the way Ellen played it, and Ellen played
it's so perfect. She's like smiling drill lines that like
you would smile through when it's just I think they're
just feeding off of each other. Yeah, that's all you needed.
That scene was all you needed to probably ever pitch
any show was because I'm like, I'm in in.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Staff and you're right. But both of them so winning
in the romantic aspect of it. But Christina was so
like the anti hero, right, she just was just like.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
She's dark and twisty.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Yes, since she was cut throat. She was everything that
you would be in medical school. Yeah, and it surpassed
Er as the longest running medical show.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
It's insane. But also I have to say, because we're
on the heels of news that came out two hours
forty minutes ago, I got a phone call from our
show and our meg before we got the news, but
that it came up publicly that we were picked up.
We've actually been picked up for our twenty second season,
which is insane because in this day and age, this
(03:34):
is it's not an easy task for any series to
first off, to have a pilot. ABC has no pilots
this year, which is insane.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
That's crazy.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
This is huge congratulations, but for a series to go
straight to series is like an anomaly. Just doesn't happen
like it's so hard. So but yeah, so I'm excited
for the fall lineup.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
Who Johnny that fall line up.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
I think it's gonna be a good one.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
I think it's gonna be a good one. I think
we're gonna have some fun things to watch. Okay, so
what else is there?
Speaker 1 (04:11):
So?
Speaker 2 (04:11):
I also heard something speaking of the og speaking of
the original cast members. I was I was a diehard
for Denny and Izzy, and I really have to say
I happened upon I went to the TV room and
Eve has gotten to my season and I walked in
(04:31):
and it was there. I was on this on the
screen and it was a scene and I forgot that
when I first came. Yes, he was a ghost isn't.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Notorious like ghost sex season, which is the ghost sex.
It's like she's having you.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
Know, yes it is.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
It's goes sex, which referred to in the phantom as
ghost sex.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
For sure. Yes, but I remember, and I was watching
it with you. Of course, of course I had to
stay and watch myself. I uh was talking to Heigel
in the scene. I remember Jeffrey Deane's in the scene
and it was so hard to shoot because you weren't
supposed to hear him, but you had to wait for
his line to be over to say you were next line.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
That's true.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
And I kept looking at him and they're like, you
can't see him, and I was like, I'm new. I'm
just trying to get.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Done, like you know, the whole listener responding thing you
learned after school, get that forget.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
But like I'm trying. And so yeah, anyways, there's that
I did. I did love that. And then I also
heard that Sandra Oh was in the news for saying
you know she's always said, and I was there for it.
And truly, no one has left a show with the
A lot of times people would leave the show, but
(05:47):
you actually wouldn't even know they were leaving. You'd finish
out the season and then you'd find out afterwards. Yeah,
some by their their choice and some not. But Sandra
really knew she was going for a long time and
so there was a lot of runway. And then she
was so dear. I mean the thought she put into
(06:07):
like writing handwritten notes, and she had these gifts made
for everyone, and she was just she's such an incredible human.
But she she might have said in an interview that
she maybe maybe might come back, or that she would
consider coming back, and she's never said that before.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
She has not in the past she has. It's sort
of been like, you know, that's I've sort of moved
on to new waters. And she obviously loves the show
so much, but there would not it didn't seem like
there would be a return of Christina Yang happening anytime soon.
And maybe it's still not happening anytime soon. But the
(06:45):
fact that she would be open to it, because we
never got to really work together.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Very much, she's amazing.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
It was another intern that was always on her service,
not Joe Wilson.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
She raises the game. Let's go back a little bit
because I actually have something about Sandro that's kind of talking,
which is that Sandra and I first met because she
was in a little movie called a I directed by
Steven Spielberg, and I was also in AI. But we
were like background kind of and maybe we had like
(07:16):
a line or two. I think that's how I remember it.
But it was she and I and Emmanuel we were
in the show, in the AI show. And Sandra later
on said to me, which made me laughingly hard. She said,
of course that she and Emanuel like tried to stay
close to me because I figure, like, we're not getting
cut out. I say, if we stay close to Capshaw
(07:39):
and I fully got cut out. They so they too.
That's really funny. You have no idea how many Spielberg
movies I've been cut out of?
Speaker 1 (07:48):
No way, wait, let's just sidebar for a second. Name
one other Spielberg movie that you've been cut out of.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
I was cut out of Shoulder's list list. Yeah, well no.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
You were, but because I know this story from just
being like loving each other and know each other's lives.
So you went over to Europe?
Speaker 2 (08:11):
Yes, when I was in high school. Yeah. When I
was in high school, our family was making the movie
in Crackout Poland, and it was my junior year and
my mom did not want to, you know, split up
the move split up the family and it was what
it was. So I got homeschooled, and while I was there,
I also worked on the movie, you know, wherever I
(08:32):
could help. I did after school and uh there was
a party scene and uh they were like, well, just
be an extra. So I was like, of course I
want to be an extra. So I put on, you know,
a beautiful little dress. So I did that, and then
again probably thought I got a good chance to stay
in the pic. I had a good chance to stand
(08:53):
in this film. Sure that would be a negative on
the cutting room floor.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
Not there major follow up questions. Okay, if my dad
puts me out of a movie, I'm like a little
knock knocked door on that office and I'm like, where
is why? Why be put it back in? Obviously, if
you want the ratings, if you want the nominations, put
(09:18):
it back in. I don't know how I got nominated
without you.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Difference between you and I, I was like.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
Okay, oh my god, you were like, dude, where am I?
Seriously wait, I have a question because it's it's a
(09:50):
very unique relationship that you guys get to have, right
and so are you? Does he ever like watch your
work and then give you acting tips where he's like,
I will you know? Direct?
Speaker 2 (10:01):
That would truly be like just you saying those words
out loud makes my whole body like no, it would
be my worst nightmare, all right, and so many people,
and I understand why I would say like, oh my gosh, yeah,
let's do some scene study at home and have you know,
have him give me some notes, because then i'd really
be close to the source.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
Yes, I'm laughing because like your dad is Steven Spielberg,
and you're like, I don't want notes from you know,
like I'm just gonna and Martin Luddington, who was the
back end of a donkey and some sort of production,
is not afraid to give me all the notes. Girl
to listen to those. But you know, tweat your own.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
I know, you know what. Every once in a while,
I will send if I if I'm proud of a
tape i've done, I'll send it to him. And he's
just the best at giving. It's not even feedback. I
think that's what it is. That I'm not asking for feedback.
It's just he's so great to be like, oh is amazing,
and like does it's so full force? Just do you
(11:08):
know he's just a he's on the sidelines clapping.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
If you could have been because now I'm going to
pick your brain on this, if you could have been
in one movie of his? Is there a movie that
you're like, I wish I'd played Birdie in Easy So
I wanted to be a Jurassic Park. There's the girl the.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
Sister brother wanting to was just scary scene when they're
in the.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
I know it was amazing when they're in the car
and everything. You know, what if you could be one
character in his movie, what would have been?
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Oh I'm slow on the uptake for these things, and
I need to think about that. Okay, we've completely diverged
from great I know we have.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
But this is what happens.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
This is what I know.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
Listen, we're celebrating Gray's part of our history going into
season twenty two.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
Am I going to come back for season twenty two?
I think I should.
Speaker 1 (11:58):
I think you should listen. I can't say what I
know right now, but there are reasons that you really,
really we need you.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
It's called a teaser.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
I do think that we should get Meg on here.
Meg has to come.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
On and she has to, yeah, spill the beans as.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
To sort of we got to pick her brain on
next week.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
Yeah we do, Yeah, we do. Okay, all right, I'll
put it in my schedule. I'll put it on my calendar.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
Put it on the calendar.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
Okay, what do you see as the future for the show? You?
What do you think about Joe in season twenty two?
You're gonna have a little fun you gonna cry, You're
gonna are you gonna laugh, you gonna what do you do?
Speaker 1 (12:39):
Hopefully in season twenty two, she will be a mother
to It will be a new part of motherhood to her.
She's pregnant with twins. So I think we're gonna really
dive in and explore that the show in general. I
think maybe we might be getting a new intern class.
I feel like, you know, like you you know, after
(13:00):
a certain amount of time, there's you're due for, like
a new set of interns what spices things up. I
think we might be due.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
I like it. I like a little spuss.
Speaker 1 (13:13):
I know, if you could come back and doing would
you want to get drunk at Joe's Bar?
Speaker 2 (13:18):
Oh my gosh, definitely get drunk at Joe's Bar.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
I feel like it's always such a fun thing to
do on a show. Uhho's Bar?
Speaker 2 (13:27):
I know. And when I came back last time, I
got to do kind of a badass medical So I
feel like I checked that box.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
You need, like the social.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
Yeah, I feel like I feel like it would be
kind of fun to be back at the hospital, but
like in streets and just coming by to say hi,
and then in my streets and my total casual. Just
Arizona is stopping by for something. There was something crazy
and emergent with you know, one of my people where
(13:55):
like they really needed me. Yeah, like keep your finger
on the bomb type line, you know, like you.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
No, I love it?
Speaker 2 (14:05):
Yeah, yeah, I love it.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
You still if you do the finger on the bomb?
Are you still in streets? Like, because I'm imagining some
sort of cash mirror a lot of jewels.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
It's New York, It's but it's New York, Arizona. Yeah, yeah,
or like I think it'd be kind of fun if
you if you have, if like Arizona came back and
maybe had like a little flirtation with someone that was there,
I was like, hey, a.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
Little listen, that's what we do on this show. You
just got to hit that supply closet and it'll happen.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
Oh my gosh, Oh that's supply closet.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
It's the elevator.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
All right, you guys, we are celebrating Happy twentieth Grays.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
You rock the Tsunatomy, Shonda Rhimes, you.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
Are all the fields.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
Oh and you know, credit to Shanda for being.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
Just wrote it in her pajamas.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
Yes, is that true?
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Yeah? I got the pilot in our pajamas.
Speaker 1 (15:03):
Now, I want to know what kind of p js
as were I need those pj's. Those are manifesting pj's.
I hope the pjss and flying off the shelves. All right,
call it through.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
Let's call it the end of the episode.
