Speaker 1 (00:01):
All right, here we go Pack twelve fans. This one's
for you. This it's the Pack twelve Apostles, and only
the truth lives here Packed twelve Apostles.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
As I'm George Reister, He's Ralph Amsden, and this is
the PAC twelve Apostles, And you guys make sure that
you leave a five star rating wherever you listen to podcasts,
tell a friend about the show and everything in between.
Of so much, I mean, this is jam pack. Today
we have the PAC twelve Conference Championship game. The uh,
(00:38):
there's so much movement. There's been a defection in LA
coaching changes, future of the conference, transfer portal going crazy,
and we got bowl season. We're gonna get more into
bowl season next week. But and a recup cap of
the entire year. But you guys make sure that you
guys share with a friend. Go over to the YouTube
(00:58):
channel George Rice for right now. In a couple weeks
it'll be rebranded just to Unafraid Show and Ralph if
you can tell the folks what's coming up in twenty
twenty four.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
Man, I say, keep it tuned to the Unafraid Show
YouTube channel. We're obviously got to change up this show.
The branding this show a little bit with the disappearance
of the PAC twelve Rest in Peace. But I will
say this, in twenty twenty four Unafraid show George Reister,
all the content will not look like it has been
(01:29):
run by Larry Scott or George Kleaevkoff.
Speaker 4 (01:32):
That's for sure.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
I think that that's important. I think that's important that
it looks like it's being run by competent individuals instead
of the incompetency that was run by the PAC twelve.
But anyways, though, let's start with the PAC twelve championship game.
I was there, you were there. That was my first
(01:56):
time at Allegiance Stadium. And if you have a chance
to go to Allegiance Stadium for anything, go It's an
amazing stadium. Like the seating is amazing. Like one of
the things I hate about the Rose Bowl is that,
even though I love the Rose Bowl, the thing I
hate about it is the actual seating. Like they need
to redo how much distance is in between each seat,
(02:21):
Like it's a it's it's squished it. It's like they
have not taken into account that humans have grown, that
they're that they're an inch and a half taller than
they were since on average since the time they built
that damn stadium, maybe two inches. The Raids branding was dope.
The the press box is like it feels like you're
(02:44):
standing it. It's super high, but it feels but you're
looking straight down onto the stadium, I mean onto the field.
The the switees are dope. I had no complaints and
it's super easy to get to because you go through
the the Mandealai Bay, you walk over the bridge because
there's essentially no parking there. I love it, Ralph, I
(03:05):
love it. And when when the super Bowl's there in February,
it's gonna be crazy.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
It was very cool, very much enjoyed my time there.
It was cool to hang out with you, even though
I had to kick your ass out of the press box.
It got a little emotional when Oregon retook the lead
to avoid cheering. You grab my hand so hard that
it was sore two days later. But I love the
press box. It was like open air, which is crazy.
It was maybe sixty forty Oregon fans and it didn't
(03:32):
matter when anything good or bad happened for either team.
Like you brought the acoustics in there, It felt like
it was seventy thousand people cheering for in any one direction.
The black seats were cool. The answer is school very
strange looking out the front window of the stadium and
seeing like gridlocked traffic on the fifteen because the stadium
is right up against a major highway. But I love
(03:53):
the experience. They took great care of us. It was
a lot of fun to be there with you, and
it was kind of a special privilege, a special treat
to sit next to Ryan Abraham of podcasts The Champions,
the kind of like the Big Brother podcast, the one
that's been around the longest, uh and and to spend
the last few hours of the PAC twelve hanging out
with Ryan Abraham. He's such a cool guy, kind of
(04:14):
the voice and personality for me of the PAC twelve
And really really enjoyed my time hanging out with you,
hanging out with him. I got to talk to your
guy Josh Pate a little bit. It was cool seeing
all your videos from down on the field. And then
the game. I know it didn't turn out the way
that you wanted it to, but what an awesome final
game of the PAC twelve conference.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
No, it wasn't it was shitty. It was terrible. It's terrible. No,
But on a road note, and one of the things
that I have found is being honest works right. And
you have Washington fans who have surprisingly received the YouTube
content very well, considering that I am an Oregon Duck
(04:58):
and there's usually not a lot of crossover. The and
their fans have been amazing. And it's just like people
want people to tell the truth about college football. I've
said that Washington, how long have I had them in
the top two? Probably?
Speaker 4 (05:14):
Oh my god, all year long.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
You made several arguments that they should be number one.
You root for your team and at the same time,
like you want to beat Washington more than you want
to breathe sometimes if that doesn't mean you don't recognize
exactly what Washington has been.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
Yeah, years and truthfully, so to go into the game,
the first two drives by Oregon, I thought were nerves,
like you could see bo Knicks realize the gravity of
the moment and will Stein the officer coordinator or however
they read plays or whether it's play calls or however
(05:50):
they read them. It was not as good of a
you know, a start as you would have hoped for.
Bo Nicks and he never got comfortable all night. And yes,
some of it was due to the Washington defense, but
I think some of it was due to the stage
and the moment. They didn't run the ball nearly enough. Yeah, yeah,
(06:18):
it was. It was tough, man, it was. It was
tough to watch because you knew that Oregon could not
get it started and when they went down ten to nothing.
And it's ironic because the game really mirrored the SEC
Championship which was played the next day, and Grubb from
(06:40):
Washington did a phenomenal job getting the ball out of
Michael Penick's hands because in the first game he got
hit a bunch and when Michael Pennick starts to get hit,
his spray chart goes all over the place, like in
terms of he starts to miss way more throws, all
of that stuff. And I thought Washington did a phenomenal
(07:01):
job of just taking what the defense was giving them
and they won. And coaches talk about winning first down,
and winning first down means getting four yards or more,
and it feels like Washington won probably seventy five percent
of their first downs because when you win first down
(07:25):
and then but Oregon did a great job on second
down throughout the game, but then Washington won third downs
and then when it came down to it at the
end of the game, Oregon they they did have some
injuries at corner and defensive line, but listen, that's that's
no excuse. Washington kept the ball on the field and
(07:48):
closed the game out when it mattered the most.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
Yeah, I think you brought a third down. Washington dominated
the first quarter. They were four for five on their
first third down conversion opportunities, and then they went zero
for five on their next and that's when Oregon was
able to catch up and even take the lead. And
then from that point on it was it felt like
or Washington hit every third down after that, and so
(08:17):
to me, that was really the key to the game.
Michael Pennix made a couple of just absolutely insane, insane throws.
One down the oh.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
The one that almost dropped of the the one where
Justin Jacobs dove that couldn't he couldn't have missed that
by more than a quarter inch.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
Yeah, there was a one where Roma Dunze lined up
in the slot and ran a safety or a slant
thirty yards downfield. Slant the whole time and he drug
his defender all the way, picked up another defender, and
Pennix hit him on the sideline going out of bounds
thirty yards down the field right there.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
I mean like he that's called layering, that's what That's
what they call it in the quarterback world.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
And Pennix was he was healthy enough to run it
a couple of times too. And then when they when
they got into the red zone, they were bringing in
the Dylan Johnson Wildcat formations that looked to give Oregon
a little bit of trouble. But I feel like once
just getting lined up to it, yeah, oh sure, But
I feel like once Oregon got things figured out, you
saw like the Oregon machine, yes, get rolling. They just
(09:28):
it just took too long to get there. Ten nothing
proved to be too much and.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
Twenty to three. It was twenty to three at one point,
and just the and I think that Washington people and
I talked to a few at the game and after
the game, just the fact that that game ended up
in jeopardy when when they're only up three points with
two fourteen left and they're like, we got to get
two first downs, buddy, like that's to win this game.
(09:57):
And we do not want to give them the ball back.
I thought that that was at that level of respect
for the game and for the team. Like I was
talking to my sons after because they were very upset.
I was, I told you I wanted to throw up,
and it was like, don't uh say, don't cry because
(10:17):
it's over, Smile because it happened. And truthfully, these are
the things that make college football great is that you
get these losses and how can you truly appreciate the
wins when you when you never ever go through any
any down times. I mean, that's why Georgia feels how
(10:38):
they do. Dude, how many times did did did? Who
was who was there?
Speaker 4 (10:46):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (10:46):
Mark mark Rick when he was there prior to Kirby Smart,
How many times did Mark Rick break their hearts as
the head coach? Their hearts were broken for like thirty years.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Forty forty years of of of a dry season before
getting a national championship and then being able to repeat
on that. What I loved was when you and I
looked at each other during the third quarter and we
were like, man, how mad are Texas A and M
fans right now? Because those the only college football game
on They thought they maybe had a shot at Dan Lanning.
They didn't. They thought they maybe had a shot at
(11:18):
Kaylan to Board, they didn't. Neither one of those guys
would pick up the phone because they were so focused
on this game, which I love. But like you're watching
Kaylen Debor put on an absolute master class in in scheming,
and then you watch Dan Lanning like keep everybody focused
and bring them back, and you're like, yeah, these are
(11:39):
two of the best coaches in college football right now.
And you know, no shade on Elco, but Texas A
and M fans had to be watching that game, like, damn,
we maybe made the move at head coach a little
bit too early, maybe jumped into our coaching pick a
little bit too early, because I just I thought, incredible
job up all year by landing. Just at some point,
(12:03):
Kaylin de Bore has to lose. At some point, he's
got to lose a game like one score I score
games this year or some crazy thing like that.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
I mean, and and but we know, we know how
sports work and the world works is when you win
a bunch of one score games the previous year, the
next year, it's rough on you. And in one score games,
I mean, it's just the truth.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
Yeah, and I mean and Washington has to capitalized now
because they're.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
Losing three first round but they're losing a first round quarterback,
two first round wide receivers, and they might lose uh,
you know, a Day two pick at wide out as well.
Now what I what I have heard on the transfer
portal portal front is that they may be getting Malik
(12:54):
Murphy from Washington, I'm sorry, from from Texas.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Oh, so that you think they're going to it's gonna
be a couple of lingering handshakes after the first round
of the college football playoffs.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
Okay, So here's the thing. Washington's class schedules. Classes start
on January fourth, so he can't play in the National
Championship Game and go to Washington, except for I believe
Washington is on the quarter system too, so he could
(13:30):
go in March and make spring ball. But the problem
is is that then you're behind the eight ball on
learning the offense, being around the coaches and all of
that stuff, unless you just quit school at Texas and
move up there and spend your nil money, which is
(13:50):
an option.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
If I'm a transfer quarterback. I'm looking at both. I'm
looking at both destinations in the Pacific Northwest and say
if you want me, you know, because there's gotta be
some more. You're you're you're given between one and two
million to to the top, you know, five six transfer
quarterbacks out there. But what is it worth to end
up in the right situation?
Speaker 2 (14:15):
Oh, yep, exactly, And I mean, or Oregon was in
on bow Knicks for like one and a half million
this this year, I mean, and I mean and look
at look at where you were in the pac twelve championship.
If bow Knicks could some kind of way apply for
another year instead of going in the draft, or the
same with Washington and Michael Pennix, how much would that
(14:37):
be worth to the universities and to those colluct Yes, yes,
that's that's minimum minimum three three million, because because you
know where the end destination is that you have a
chance to win every single game if that guy is
under center. So uh so, yeah, And then for Oregon,
(15:00):
all signs are pointing to Dylan Gabriel going to be
their transfer quarterback. And there's a video on the YouTube
channel that you guys are going to see as well
about the transfer portal. And I'm a message board lurker,
like I go on and see what the just because
I want to get a chance to get the pulse
(15:20):
of the people around. And their fans have been incredible
about about Dylan Gabriel leaving Oklahoma. They're like, oh, hey,
no problem, man, Man's so good to man, thanks for
your service and all of this. I was like, damn,
like that's cold, Like that's wild, And because fans typically
(15:47):
don't react like that.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
No.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
And the nice thing for Oklahoma fans they got Jackson Arnold.
You know, he was a top twenty five recruit coming out,
and and you know they know that by Dylan Gabriel leaving,
they're not going to lose Jackson Arnold. And they were
very grateful for what Dylan Gabriel was able to do.
Plus they lost their offensive coordinator, Jeff Levy. He's going
(16:11):
to Mississippi State. And I know a lot of people
think that Dylan Gabriel is going to Mississippi State. But
guess what if Mississippi State's only paying three to four
million for a head coach, they're not paying one and
a half for a quarterback. Mississippi State isn't quite there
yet where they're gonna blow the whole nil budget on
one player, right, So I doubt I doubt Dylan Gabriel
(16:32):
ends up following his offensive coordinator. I think he'd be
successful anywhere. We saw what he could do at UCF,
we saw what he could do with Oklahoma. I think
he's gonna make the most of his last year, and
Oregon makes sense for him because he's very similar in stature,
very similar in playing style to Bo Nicks. I think
it'd be a plug and play situation, but you never know.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
You never know.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
Ty Thompson goes out throws for four hundred yards against
Liberty who knows, you know. So it's definitely gonna be interesting.
But I do think that these two coaches have. All
you need to do is prove that you're a quarterback
destination school and you're getting one of the top ten
coming out of high school and you're getting one of
(17:12):
the top ten transfers at the exact same time, and
you want to be that. You want to be you know,
Lincoln Riley has that, Brian Kelly has had that. You
want that reputation, Nick. It took forever, but Nick Saban
got that reputation, right. You want that because that means
that you know, one of the top ten guys is
going to come to you no matter what because they
want to emulate what's been done there before them.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
Yeah, and so I believe that the future for Washington
is bright. I think that this year is one of
those highlight years that I don't think they're in the
same position next year because well, actually it depends on
your quarterback situation and your wide out situation. Are they
going to be tough and good? Yeah, but this is
(17:58):
probably going to be a ten win team next year, uh,
you know, in the in the regular season, as opposed
to a twelve win team in the regular season, I believe.
And Oregon you could say the same exact thing, except
for they have been recruiting better on the lines. Oh
and then Washington's gonna lose, you know, a multiple offensive linemen,
(18:23):
one of them probably being a first round pick and
another one is going to be a draft pick as well. Yeah.
So I do believe that Oregon is better positioned kind
of going forward with the with them knowing who their
quarterback is going to be and all of that kind
of kind of stuff. Provided something weird doesn't happen. They
have good wide outs there already too that have played
(18:45):
that will be back. So yeah, this is going to
be a battle going forward that this isn't going to
be one of them. You know, somebody goes on a
twelve year winning streak like Oregon, did you know, like
fifteen years.
Speaker 4 (18:59):
Ago, right right?
Speaker 3 (19:02):
I think, I don't know. I hate that they're going
to the Big Ten. I hate that all this is happening.
But I look at Washington and Oregon as being much
healthier moving into the Big Ten than I do. Ucla
and even USC, who has all of the talent in
the world. But you know, you've detailed time and time
(19:25):
again why it hasn't been put to its full use,
whether it's the way that they practice, or the style
of the offense not being complimentary's playing good defense, or
whatever it is. I do look at Oregon and Washington
just being better positioned in the Big Ten than their
southern counterparts.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
Yep. Now speaking of southern counterparts USC and UCLA, this
rivalry just got even worse, I mean just more intense.
Like it's weird, like my I live in the house
with a UCLA and she hates us. He hate USC.
(20:03):
And I know that you USC people because Terrell Thomas
and them. I'm around them all the time, former USC
cornerback and a couple others who our kids play the
same soccer team. And oh oh, and by the way,
they are first class a holes, bro like And I'm
(20:25):
talking about them, not necessarily USC fans in particular, but
those couple of USC fans in general, because after the
PAC twelve championship, they made a point to text me.
They were like, hai, hi, you guys lost. You sucked.
But I was like, what kind of person isn't participating
(20:45):
in a in a conference championship and has something to
say about other people? Like do you realize how loser
that is to like hate on? I'm like, it'd be
different if you were good, you won, you went seven
and five, and you're talking trash.
Speaker 3 (21:05):
They got a ticket where they can get it, they
lost five last six or whatever the.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
Nerve of you.
Speaker 3 (21:11):
I did see USC fans walking around in Allegiance Stadium,
and for a second I thought we were in El
Paso or something like they were. They were there. They
were there repping their team, and and you gotta you
gotta give them credit for showing up.
Speaker 4 (21:27):
For sure.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
Yeah, they must have bought them tickets. Early. Oh are
you all right? So the the news around there was
Deanton Lynn, whose first season was at u c l A.
And my wife was like, Yo, this is so whack.
He don't have any allegiance. I was like, he just
got there. Who was u c l A's defensive coordinator,
(21:51):
went across the street to USC doubled his pay. They
were like they they pulled the old Hey, I know
you're making one point three, you want to make two
point three move? And I don't believe that his move
was solely about money because I know that UCLA tried
(22:11):
to counter two, So I don't think it was exclusively
about money, right, Like it had to be about the
vision for the future.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
It doesn't reflect definitely doesn't reflect well on Chip Kelly
and UCLA as a whole. I thought they were might
be ready to fire Chip, but they're standing by him
moving into Big ten with him.
Speaker 2 (22:41):
Stand by your man.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
Yeah, well I didn't know that was Martin Jerman's man.
We're learning more every day, but you know, I just.
Speaker 2 (22:51):
It's either him or Wasserman's one. And it too buddy.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
Yeah, maybe somebody who has the money. But yeah, the
idea that that UCLA is not able to like match
defensive coordinator pay or the idea that UCLA has to
pay two million for a defensive coordinator.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
Bro, that's the big ten, Bro. That's oh oh, you're
saying the idea that USC has to pay two million.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
Or that, or that even UCLA would have to pay
that to hang on to one. Like if I'm Chip Kelly,
I think a lot of people gave UCLA crap for
balking at making uh at making Danton Winn the highest
paid defensive coordinator in the country. I'm totally fine with
I'm totally fine with the resources not going that way.
(23:39):
But at the same time, it's UCLA, and you know
that they're spending three million dollars more than they need
to on food every year. So maybe cut down on
the lobster roll budget and get your and save yourself
the defensive coordinator you know that you've always wanted. But
I did think maybe Chip thinks because Bill McGovern did
a good job there, D'Anton lynn did a good good
job there, that Chip will just be able to hire,
(24:00):
you know, the next person to do a good job.
That's a lot of money, and and and and if
USC wants to pay it, they better deliver. They better
deliver a higher like that makes Lincoln Riley's seat one.
Because if you can't get it done with the highest
paid defensive coordinator out there, and you're the biggest offensive
(24:25):
genius out there, if you can't put together a ten
win season, you're in trouble.
Speaker 2 (24:31):
That's a fact. Jack.
Speaker 3 (24:33):
And they they might have held on to Clay Helton
a lot longer than they needed to, but then they're
not gonna do that in the big ten.
Speaker 2 (24:40):
Yeah, yeah, I mean they things are gonna have to
go quick there because it is a yeah, that's wild.
Speaker 4 (24:49):
You're gonna have to go quick with a new quarterback.
It'll be interesting.
Speaker 2 (24:54):
Oh well, oh, speaking of new new quarterbacks. Right, there's
a different landscape in college football right now, and there's
a like, like we told you, hit the YouTube channel,
go see the transfer portal video to understand like that
this is not ruining college football, that it's actually making
(25:14):
college football greater. It's gonna make it harder on the USC's,
the Alabama's of the world. I know you USC has
been up in quite some sometime. They're like Texas hoping
to be back. But the traditional powers that have had
that have had a monopoly on the sport. It's no longer.
It's no longer going to be like that. I mean,
(25:36):
you saw Georgia be in struggles and Alabama being struggles
this year. And I love that. I love the fact
that that you won't be able to just roll your
helmets out on the field and just win. I like
the fact that you got to earn wins and you
can't take any week lightly. That's the amazing part.
Speaker 3 (26:00):
Yeah, it's nice, it's nice. I mean, the people there's
a lot of people worried that the transfer portal is
rooting college football, but with the expanded playoff your opportunity
to go from zero to hero is an all time
I it really is. And you look at it, and
just because the players getting good transfers in doesn't mean
that they're all gonna gel. That didn't happen for USC
(26:23):
you look at it.
Speaker 4 (26:24):
This year.
Speaker 3 (26:24):
They took Dorian Singer from Arizona and struggled to find
a way to use him. They took key on Bars
from Arizona. He didn't even play, you know. They took Sipilicky,
the punter from Arizona State. They don't even punt that much.
You know, players are gonna figure out that going to
a destination that's got a little bit more prestige and
that can then that can help the bank account out
(26:46):
in the short term might not necessarily be the best
destination for you. And you're gonna see players bounce back.
Where Leake Brown was one of the prize recruits that
USC was able to bring in, and now Leake Brown
is in the transfer portal looking for somewhere else to
play because guess what, I don't run the ball that much.
You know, they got in a running back transfer from
University of South Carolina didn't even use them that much
until the end of the season, so which is wild. Yeah,
(27:10):
And just because the transfer portal exists doesn't mean that
a team is going to be able to know how
to use the players that they're getting in. And I
think players will wise up to the fact that you
have to go to the right destination that gives you
as much playing time as possible, you know, because the
same things are happening in the transfer portal that happened
on the high school level. You get ten four stars
(27:31):
on the defensive side of the football, ten four and
five stars like Texas A and M did before the
twenty twenty two season, and they get there, and number one,
they're young, so they're not playing right away. And number two,
they all play the same position, so they're all messing
with each other's depth chart roles. And then you see
those players that made up one of the greatest recruiting
classes in history, they all bounce out. Walter Nolan in
(27:53):
the portal, Anthony Lucas moved on to you know, to
USC before last season. You know, this is the type
of stuff talking about that like you can load up
through the portal, but it still has to work itself
out on the depth chart and on the field. And
when you have twelve teams that have the ability to
go to the College Football Playoff, and when everybody kind
of gets on a higher level as far as nil
(28:15):
and what they're able to offer players, you're gonna see
players spread out more. And you pointed out in the
video you made Baylor went from two wins to twelve
in one season. TCU went from five wins to thirteen
in one season. And then we had teams lose a
bunch of transfers before this last year, before the twenty
twenty three season, and get better because the players that
(28:36):
stayed were the ones that wanted to be there and
that helped the team chemistry. Oklahoma State won nine wins
even though the whole team went into the portal. Missouri
won ten games even though a bunch of their players
went into the portal. The ones that mattered State and
I talked about Arizona losing all those players to USC.
They had two more wins than the USC did this year. Like,
you can survive the portal era if you are going
(28:56):
about things the right way. One of the people out
there that is experimenting with even supporting losing players, it's
Kenny Dillingham. Kenny Dillingham is straight up like complimenting the
players on the way out the door. Ryan Clark went
on TV and said that Kenny Dillingham called Marcus Freeman
(29:16):
at Notre Dame while Jordan Clark was on campus taking
a transfer visit and talked him up. He probably didn't
talk I mean, Notre Dame knows who they want. They
would have probably taken him anyway. But to call Marcus
Freeman while that player's on campus and be like, don't
blow this, like you need this kid.
Speaker 4 (29:33):
On your team.
Speaker 3 (29:34):
Yeah, like that type of stuff. I think that's gonna
I think it could come back to you now. I
went to Arizona State, and I want to believe that
it could. It's not great to lose players, and I
talk to fans every day that they feel like they're
on the verge of quitting college football because of it.
I think you should hang on. I think it's gonna
work out. I think college football is gonna get more exciting.
And I think the players in your locker room you're
(29:56):
gonna appreciate them even more because you know they have
a choice and they chose you. It's gonna be easier
to root for them. And I think more of an
impact as a fan. You get more of an impact
now as a fan than you ever could before. And
I don't know, I don't hate the Portal era. Every
single time a player leaves Wyoming. I'm a big Wyoming fan.
(30:16):
Every single time a player leaves Wyoming, I'm like, Oh,
we're gonna suck forever.
Speaker 4 (30:19):
Well guess what, No, we're not. We're going to our
third straight bowl game for the first time in school history.
In the Portal era, where everyone has left Wyoming, every
good player. There's multiple Wyoming players that.
Speaker 2 (30:32):
You ask because remember last year when they were when
Jacob Cowing left and other guys left, you were like,
we're gonna suck, We're gonna be bad. And then all
of a sudden, rising from the ashes, here come to
Cowboys and yeah, I mean you can do it too.
Speaker 3 (30:48):
Yeah Arizona Cowing, Oh, Arizona for sure, but Cowing, you know,
went to Arizona. Cowing was a UTEP guy. But Titus Swym,
Titus Swin's maybe the best running back that that that
Wyoming has had. And since Xavian Validate, who also left
and went to Arizona State, every single year this happens,
and Wyoming is on the verge of winning nine games,
so the first time in forever. And so because you
(31:11):
have the players that are there at the group of
five level and they realize like, wow, if I show out,
I might not be an NFL guy, but I could
capitalize at this level. So people are playing harder than
they've ever played before.
Speaker 2 (31:24):
Yeah, yes, they yes they are. Now when you have
so many players jumping into portal, how do you like,
what is your you know, expectations for Bowl games? Because
Kansas State, do you know how many scholarship quarterbacks they
(31:46):
have on their roster right now?
Speaker 4 (31:49):
How many zero? Oh don't they have a bowl coming up?
Speaker 2 (31:53):
Yes? Zero, they're all in the portal, all of them.
Speaker 4 (31:58):
That's not good.
Speaker 2 (31:59):
And you have Michigan State, same example. Nothing in the room.
That's not great, except for they don't have a bowl game.
Speaker 4 (32:09):
But if you're not in a New Year six bowl,
like people say there are too many bowl games, I
don't agree. I love bowls, but a bowl, if you're
not in a New Year six bowl, a bowl is
a future showcase. That's all you have to tell yourself.
That's it. A bowl is a future showcase. You have
(32:31):
the opportunity to look at some players that you wouldn't
have looked at otherwise, and you get to take a vacation.
If you're one of those, like go to a bowl
in person.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
People.
Speaker 3 (32:39):
Bowls are gonna be fun regardless, you just have to
have a different mindset about it. Future showcase. If you're
not in a New Year six bowl, you're not in
a big money bowl. All it is is a future showcase.
And in some of those circumstances is just a future showcase.
I have enjoyed this week, and I know you're not.
In the Facebook groups but I'm in a bunch of
Pac twelve Facebook groups. People have been trolling Washington fans
(33:00):
all week long saying that Penis jumped into the portal.
And it's like, I'm talking hundreds of posts of people
like faking tweets, fake yeah, yeah, yeah, like all week
long on IF and anybody who listens. If you're on IF,
you definitely send any to George that you see. But
if you're on Facebook, like every single Pack twelve group
(33:22):
is just constant posts about Michael Pennis not playing in.
Speaker 4 (33:25):
The College football Playoff.
Speaker 3 (33:26):
It's all fake, but it is. It is very very
funny that people continue to troll Washington fans and scare
them to death on the way out the door. But
you know, if you like, let's say Bo Nicks doesn't
play against Liberty, which is certainly his right. He's been
in college football long enough, then as an Oregon fan,
(33:47):
you should just be excited to see what Ty Thompson
can do. Right, it's a future showcase. This game doesn't
really matter that much. I mean, it kind of matters.
You don't want to lose to Liberty, but you know,
you do get the opportunity to see to see somebody
else in that role and that can be kind of
fun as well.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
Oh speaking of that, bro dude. Okay, so now imagine
imagine this, right, imagine this about what's going on in
the in the transfer portal? Right, what what what's going
(34:27):
on with the transfer portal? And how this is not
only impacting like rosters, they are impacting like just all
sorts of decisions and high school recruiting. Right. Okay, so Ralph,
(34:48):
you have so you mentioned ty Thompson. Right, ty Thompson
has been in Oregon for three years? Right, what do
you think the chances are that he plays a down
at Oregon? Well down as the starter.
Speaker 4 (35:03):
Beyond this year?
Speaker 2 (35:06):
No, no, just period.
Speaker 4 (35:08):
He could start the ball.
Speaker 2 (35:11):
Oh, bot Nicks is playing in the bowl gamefy?
Speaker 3 (35:16):
Well, then if he's playing in the bowl game, then
then probably not because they have recruited over the last
three quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (35:23):
Yep. And do you know what's happening at USC.
Speaker 3 (35:29):
They have a quarterback that was supposed to be waiting
in the wings who's supposed to be very good that
they will probably recruit over.
Speaker 2 (35:36):
They are trying to get a transfer quarterback they were
trying to get. They're also trying to get Dylan Gabriel
prior to him, you know, like, and they are making
Max offers around the around there trying to do that.
You may have cam Ward over at Ohio State or
Florida State. That's where the likely destinations are for him.
Speaker 4 (36:01):
He would fit at USC.
Speaker 3 (36:03):
I don't know if there's a lot of other places
where he would fit, but I but yeah, you should
consider USC.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
But they have Malachi Nelson at USC and Miller Moss.
Miller Moss was a four star kid. Nelson was a
five star kid. Some people had him number number one.
Speaker 4 (36:19):
They don't care, and I don't care.
Speaker 2 (36:21):
But if they don't think that you are the guy,
like if they aren't one hundred percent sure, because at
USC they're not going to be willing to pack twelve.
Speaker 3 (36:34):
Coaches have been nothing, if not absolutely god awful at
knowing which quarterbacks on their roster can actually play football.
So if you don't think your guy on the bench
is the guy, you also need to realize.
Speaker 4 (36:48):
That you're probably wrong. You're probably wrong that PAC twelve
has proven nothing, if not they have no idea which
quarterbacks are good. Jonathan Smith, who everybody gave all this
love to, He's at Michigan State. Now he was legitimately
terrible at knowing which of the quarterbacks on his roster
(37:09):
to play. David Shaw, who people respect, is like the
statesmen of college football, the principled person of college football,
willing to speak truth to the powers that be that
upheld the standard that Jim Harbaughs set while he was
coach at Stanford. David Shaw could not have been worse
at identifying which quarterback on his roster was actually any
(37:32):
good going into this year. Is pretty obvious that Chip
Kelly did not know what he was doing. Utah famously
thought Charlie Brewer was going to be better than what
they had on their bench, what the players voted as
team captain, even though he wasn't named the starter in
cam Rising like this is uh, this is one thing
(37:57):
that Pack twelve coaches have been just truly bad. At
Mario Cristobal, the whole Anthony Brown Tyler Shuck thing maddening, maddening. Right,
Washington couldn't figure out what to do at quarterback after
Jake Browning left. Shout out to Cincinnati Bengals legend Jake Browning,
by the way, that so this whole thing of like
(38:18):
if they don't one hundred percent think that you're the guy. Well,
maybe you're just terrible at it, and you have to
give them the opportunity to show it. You have to,
because it's gonna be really annoying, really really really annoying.
Speaker 3 (38:31):
When Malachi Nelson leaves and blows up or ty Thompson
leaves and blows up.
Speaker 4 (38:37):
You wouldn't have.
Speaker 3 (38:38):
Loved it that much if Texas Tech held onto that
lead with Tyler Shuck in the first game of this season.
Speaker 2 (38:43):
Right, very very true, bro, very true.
Speaker 4 (38:47):
I'm just saying for these teams, be careful if you're
not convinced by the guy that you have in house,
because you haven't seen what he can do on the field.
Look around the Pac twelve and just know that, like
if if packed off coaches have been anything, it's been
terrible quarterback evaluators, just terrible. Some of these teams have
lucked into the best quarterback again and again and again,
(39:09):
going back to the Pac ten, going back to to
Andrew Walter not getting the start over Chad Christensen and
then taking that over like it's just not you know,
it's just it's a thing that we've seen too often.
Speaker 2 (39:25):
So just since we have been talking, right, Yeah, I
was on the Utah board. Mikey Matthews to the portal.
Speaker 3 (39:40):
From Utah, Nate Johnson in the portal. Who did they start?
The pig farmer? Yeah, in the portal.
Speaker 2 (39:50):
See see the the pig farmer and Nate Johnson to
the portal. Actually, the pig farmer to the portal makes
sense to me because he got a taste of starting, buddy,
and he knows that cam Risy is going to start.
So what does the pig farmer not want to do?
(40:10):
Sit on the bench now, He's like, I'm out there
having fun. I do not want to go back to
subjugated to a backup role. That's awful, right, So it
makes a lot of sense to me for him to
hop in the portal. Nate Johnson was a freshman. He
needs to develop as a passer. So unless he's going
down a division or two, then you know, either G
(40:35):
five or FCS. I don't know if that makes a
lot of sense, right, My goodness, Oregon State has been
decimated by the portal. But listen, I knew that Aiden
Childs was leaving prior to you know, as soon as
the Jonathan Smith rumors started, I was like, oh, oh
(40:56):
Aiden Aidan's out of there, buddy.
Speaker 4 (40:59):
And.
Speaker 2 (41:01):
But obviously I'm not going to divulge people's personal business
prior to it to prior to it happening. But he's
likely headed to East Lansing with his former head coach.
They're all packed twelve tight end he's in the portal.
(41:21):
I don't know where he goes. He's going to be
very very wanted. They are going to lose a lot
of players. And I don't think that Oregon State people
really because I posted there's a video on the channel
about Jonathan Smith leaving, and I don't know if it
fully sunk in how that was going to impact the
(41:45):
rest of their.
Speaker 4 (41:45):
Rosters right.
Speaker 3 (41:50):
Right, But shout out to Trent Ray, it's a good
pick to succeed yes Smith in whatever it is they're
going to do next is they work to fill out
next year's schedule. But Jonathan Smith, they gave him eleven
million annually for his assistance. We talked on this podcast
about how there's no way in hell mil Tucker could
have turned down Michigan State a second time when they
(42:10):
were trying to get him out of Colorado because they
gave him almost seven million annually for just his assistant coaches,
and that was one of the tops in all of
college football. Well, they gave Jonathan Smith eleven eleven million
for his assistants. Like he's out here changing other people's
lives and he's getting seven million a year for himself.
(42:31):
So congratulations to Jonathan Smith and his kids and his
future grandkids.
Speaker 2 (42:35):
And that was the thing that we talked about. Remember
that on the last part was like, Yo, how would
you deal with it if we don't even ask if
you knew and you were one of his longtime assistants
and you knew that he didn't even entertain it, bro,
that's hold of sorry.
Speaker 3 (42:55):
Yeah, yep, especially when you stuck with him like most
of Jonathan Smith's assistants have, Macharlzick, like his offensive coordinator
been there a long time.
Speaker 2 (43:04):
Yep. Dante More from UCLA is in the portal. Are
you surprised by that?
Speaker 3 (43:12):
You told me that was gonna happen like seven weeks
before the season ended, So not at all. You told
you told me he was gone, Yeah while he was
still playing. Yeah, And truthfully, his grandma was on Twitter blowing.
Speaker 2 (43:26):
Up yes, yes, and he looked one hundred disengaged m
especially in that col game. He didn't look like he
wanted to be there, and that's tough. Where do you
think he ends up? Uh?
Speaker 3 (43:43):
He said he want I take him at his word,
even though I've been burned by this before, that closer
to home is his goal, and by his word, the
rumors that have been out there since the middle of
the season.
Speaker 2 (43:55):
Like Michigan because he's not going to go to Michigan State.
Speaker 3 (43:59):
Yeah, yeah, he's not gonna go to Michigan State, but
you know, Michigan is an option. I do want to
read his grandma's comment word for word because it's very funny. Okay,
I want to thank all the Dante fans I've met
on here. To the naysayers, this is in the UCLA
football chat forum on Facebook. Yes, to the naysayers, it's
okay because everyone has entitled their opinion. I hold no animosity.
(44:21):
Chip Kelly was on his way to ruining my grandson.
I thank god that Dante saw it almost immediately. There
was no room for a pocket passer at UCLA. The
plays he called for Dante were ridiculous. He honestly didn't
know how to coach or call plays that Dante could
light up the field. I'm just disappointed that you didn't
get to see the real Dante. But the end has
come and for that I'm grateful. It was painful to
(44:44):
watch UCLA football. I do wish UCLA the best, but
you'll never succeed until the administration except that Chip Kelly
is embarrassing the entire program in school.
Speaker 4 (44:52):
Happy holidays to all of you. Signed C.
Speaker 3 (44:55):
Jane Johnson Bowland, grandmother of Dante Moore.
Speaker 2 (45:01):
Bro that was. I was like, Oh, okay, that's what's up.
That's what's up, then, lady ma'am.
Speaker 3 (45:12):
Oh man, Oh, that's a lot that. I don't know
how necessary all of that was, but you know, I
wish him the best. It if he you know it,
they could have let him just want to be closer
to home. But you know, Michigan is a place that
uses a pocket passer. They're not going to put you
(45:32):
out on too many runs. McCarthy runs a little bit,
but it's not everything he does. Yeah, I don't know,
I don't know. I I my assumption if they say
he's been in contact with Michigan, he's from Detroit. My
assumption is is that's where he's headed. But there's probably
gonna be some offers that turn his head on the
on the way out the door.
Speaker 2 (45:55):
Yeah, bro. And so right now you have u c.
L A has Ethan Garber's and you know that's serviceable.
USC is looking for a quarterback despite having a five
star on the roster, and there there's some behind the
(46:16):
scenes stuff that's that that that's going on there where
the kid is not necessarily helping himself in the situation.
But Arizona has a quarterback at least for now.
Speaker 4 (46:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (46:31):
I mean, because how many schools do you think are
calling Arizona Noah Fafeda Arizona's Noah Flafieda, trying to get
him and TMAC to come as a package.
Speaker 3 (46:42):
Oh my gosh, if I if if I was in
a position of means, and I would that I would
definitely be trying to back channel that for sure.
Speaker 2 (46:51):
Yes, if if you're USC, aren't you like, hey, yo, brother,
you can come over here, man.
Speaker 3 (46:58):
Yeah, come over here, come back home to so Cal. Yeah,
it wouldn't surprise me at all.
Speaker 2 (47:03):
Yeah, I hope that does not happen. I hope with
all hope that that does not happen. So Arizona's got
a quarterback? Does Arizona State have a quarterback?
Speaker 4 (47:16):
Yeah? I think Jayden Rashott is gonna stick around. I do.
Speaker 3 (47:19):
I saw him this week. I gave him a shout
out from you because I know you're a big fan
of his. Yeah, we talked for about twenty minutes, and
I think he's gonna stick around. I mean, you know,
the collective is going to have to step up. And
you know, it's one thing to give him more money
to be the face of ASU. It's really gonna be
(47:41):
another thing of whether they get people around him because
the offensive line was such a big problem this year.
Now a lot of those guys are gonna get healthy
and they should have a serviceable offensive line going into
next year. But they need help with the collective. And
Trenton Borgay is not leaving. And not only is he
not leaving, Trenton Borgay just donated ten thousand dollars to
the collective.
Speaker 2 (48:03):
So wait, and I'm totally confused.
Speaker 4 (48:06):
Wow, I starting the quarterback that started the most games
for Arizona State this year just donated ten thousand dollars
to the collective himself.
Speaker 2 (48:21):
Tax right off? Like, are they is he planning on
getting getting this back, Like, is this a What you have.
Speaker 3 (48:28):
To understand about Trenton Borgay is it's not about next year.
This is Arizona State's future version of Jonathan Smith.
Speaker 2 (48:35):
This is oh oh that yeah, bro, you.
Speaker 3 (48:42):
And this is this is going down as a community legend.
This is building for the future. He's he's he's one
of the smartest people I've ever met. He's got a
future in coaching. This is this is a step to me,
It's a step in the right direction.
Speaker 2 (48:57):
Dude, Hey, you have to hire him as a GA now, like,
there's no like he has to be the GA if
he wanted or come into an analyst role or something
like that immediately. Damn smart move, Trenton, love it man.
You playing chestnut checkers. Washington's looking for a quarterback Oregon
obviously you think that they have Dylan Gabriel.
Speaker 4 (49:19):
I think Washington State can't afford to keep their own guy.
Speaker 2 (49:23):
Yep, Oregon State's got to figure out their quarterback situation.
Cal has a quarterback in Men Mendoza, who, ironically I
just got off the phone with. Oh, so here's a
thing that happened that Cal last year. All right, So
Jakes Spavadol was the offensive coordinator.
Speaker 4 (49:46):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 2 (49:47):
Spavado all left and went to where where to go?
Tex Tech?
Speaker 4 (49:52):
I believe he went to was it Tech?
Speaker 2 (49:57):
One of them?
Speaker 4 (49:58):
You went back to the state of Texas where.
Speaker 2 (50:00):
Yes, it's for sure that in the state of Texas.
Speaker 3 (50:04):
Okay, let's see he went to Baylor.
Speaker 2 (50:06):
Okay, so yes, so job yes, so Spavadol went to Baylor.
Cow's offense. How would you describe Cow's offense throughout the
season last year?
Speaker 4 (50:19):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (50:20):
The only thing keeping them afloat?
Speaker 2 (50:22):
Yeah? But but but at what point? Because because remember
we saw their game against Auburn. Yeah, yes, so after
about the Arizona State game in.
Speaker 3 (50:34):
The chaside running game was working. They were really hard
to put up with. Yes, it wasn't, and it was
all depending on the quarterback. Before Mendoza got the reins,
it was putrid.
Speaker 2 (50:46):
Yep, and Spavidol. People didn't know this because will Cox
was a good guy and didn't make it public. He
lost play calling duties.
Speaker 4 (50:59):
Interesting, Yes, he was.
Speaker 2 (51:02):
No longer the play caller and uh will Cox didn't
lose any well, I'll let you finish. So then a
guy named Tim Plow who is now the uh the
head coach at UC Davis was actually mentoring uh Mendoza
(51:26):
throughout this whole process, and then him and the offensive
line coach took over the offense about somewhere around the
Arizona State game.
Speaker 4 (51:38):
Interesting yep.
Speaker 3 (51:40):
So, so it never came out that Spavatol wasn't calling
plays anymore. So when he leaves for Baylor, it makes
it look like will Cox lost something when he really didn't.
And now people are expecting Jake Spavattall to save Dave
Randa's job with his play call.
Speaker 2 (51:54):
Interesting.
Speaker 4 (51:54):
Interesting yep.
Speaker 2 (51:56):
So so if that does not work, If that does
not work, how's that gonna work?
Speaker 4 (52:06):
Well, if it doesn't, it doesn't, right yep.
Speaker 2 (52:08):
And and Plow was actually a quarterback at UC Davis
as as well from three to seven, and now he's
the head coach there, but cal had offered him the
officer coordinator job and he was like, nah, bro, I'm
I'm uh, I'm happy about that. Oh, UCLA just lost
(52:30):
another player to the portal as well, Camari Ramsey. They're
starting they're starting safety number twenty seven from Sierra Camp.
Speaker 4 (52:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (52:45):
And I think probably next week we'll get into more
of just like transfer destination Yeah, we'll talk about DJU.
We'll do as much as we can on that. But
in the meantime PAC twelve awards came out.
Speaker 2 (52:56):
Yes, yes, thank you for keeping me on track, Ralph.
I was I was spinning right there, bro.
Speaker 3 (53:03):
And I'm just I'm really curious to see to you
if the PAC twelve got a lot of this right
or not.
Speaker 2 (53:15):
Uh, oh my god.
Speaker 3 (53:22):
Brock Heward was mad. Brock Heward's mad, of course, former
Washington quarterback. Uh, everyone's going to get mad, right, Everyone's
going to get mad. But uh, this is a tough
year at the quarterback position. This is definitely a tough
(53:44):
year at the quarterback position.
Speaker 2 (53:46):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (53:46):
Is definitely as tough as it's ever been at the
At the wide receiver position, yes, I don't think anybody
was going to necessarily agree with with what they were
doing at wide receiver. But let's let's get into these awards. Yes, so, okay,
Pack twelve Offensive Player of the Year went to bow Knicks.
(54:11):
Would you do you do you agree with that?
Speaker 2 (54:13):
Yes? Yes, I do? Okay, I mean there were three options,
really there were. It's hard. It wasn't gonna be Caleb Williams,
even though he still put up phenomenal. I mean, so
it really came down to Pinnix and bow Knicks and
the bowl game and the Pac twelve championship didn't factor
(54:36):
into this.
Speaker 4 (54:37):
I believe right it did not.
Speaker 2 (54:39):
So with that, you gotta remember that Michael Pennix put
together a couple of not that good games.
Speaker 4 (54:49):
So he did.
Speaker 3 (54:49):
He did not produce a touchdown against Arizona State, He
struggled against Stanford. Yeah, he had another game where he
had no touchdown passes but went over three hundred yards.
He did have some struggles, yes.
Speaker 2 (55:02):
Yeah, So with that, I thought it made sense to
give Bo Nicks the Pac twelve Player of the Year. Yeah,
I had no problem with that. I actually think that
that was the right move.
Speaker 3 (55:14):
Pat Tillman Defensive Player of the Year. I hate that
this is going away.
Speaker 2 (55:18):
This was a no brainer. This was a UCLA that
should have been a unanimous vote. They shouldn't have even
taken that vote. They should have just mailed. Should have
said a lot too.
Speaker 3 (55:31):
Yeah, yeah, I mean the fact that like Arizona State
designed an offense from like the nineteen thirties to like
avoid just him was Yeah, that was everything you needed
to know. Freshman offensive Player of the Year. Easy, Noah
Fafida Easy. You know, technically a freshman, but that's how
(55:52):
things work nowadays.
Speaker 4 (55:54):
Not even close.
Speaker 2 (55:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (55:56):
Maybe maybe the most runaway even with lat too there,
maybe the most runaway award correct Freshman Defensive Player of
the year cade uluave at Cal And the Coach of
the Year did not go to your boy, Jedfish. It
went to the only person to ever go undefeated in
the PAC twelve. Kaylin de Bor, how do you feel
(56:16):
about that?
Speaker 2 (56:19):
I thought that was fair. I thought that if Washington
had lost a game that Jedfish would have would have
won it. But the fact that nobody has made it
through the PAC twelve unscathed and a coach did it
that that that's Packed twelve. That's Coach of the Year worthy. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (56:40):
So Cayleb Williams, likely number one pick in the NFL draft,
did not make first or second team All Packed twelve. Yeah,
that went to Bo Nick's first team, Michael Pennock's second team.
In the argument there, nope, Okay, running backs Jada not
had to be a first teamer, had to. Yeah, here's
where we getting a little bit of controversy. Amian Martinez
(57:02):
first team Bucky Irving and Dylan Johnson second team.
Speaker 2 (57:06):
Hated it, hated it.
Speaker 3 (57:09):
That Damien Damien should have been a second teamer. Yes, okay, okay, uh.
Honorable mention at the running back position. I loved watching
all year long. Jonah Coleman at at Arizona, So shout
out to Jonah Coleman.
Speaker 2 (57:26):
And the other one was the other honorable mention was
from USC. Yes from South Carolina.
Speaker 4 (57:37):
H Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (57:38):
They the Marshaon Lloyd, whose usage rate was bro just make.
Speaker 2 (57:44):
Bro He's he's crazy good.
Speaker 4 (57:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (57:47):
Yeah, he probably should have beat Outdylan Johnson, even though
Dylan Johnson got his award based on his game against
USC in right opinion.
Speaker 2 (57:54):
Yes, uh.
Speaker 3 (57:55):
The wide receivers. I this was gonna be tough. It
was gonna be really tough. They have four wide receiver
spots when they could have had four on the first
team alone. Roma Dunday and Troy Franklin are your first teamers,
Ted Roy and McMillan and Brendan Rice were your second teamers.
Speaker 2 (58:13):
I so I would agree with Rome, Franklin and McMillan right.
They probably should have added a third wide receiver spot
because McMillan deserved to be on the first team too.
I'm kind of iffy on Brendan Rice as the as
(58:33):
the second teamer. How about you.
Speaker 4 (58:35):
You'll never hear me say anything bad about Brendan Rice ever.
Speaker 2 (58:38):
No, no, no, no, no, this isn't This isn't like
that he didn't play well because because we both think
the kid is really good.
Speaker 3 (58:47):
My my thing was Washington's other receivers didn't even get
honorable mention.
Speaker 2 (58:52):
Well, one of them missed seven games? Was that McMillan
He missed seven games or something of the.
Speaker 4 (58:59):
Pulk no honorable mention.
Speaker 3 (59:01):
It's crazy because people know exactly how good, how good
they were, right, Uh, Lincoln Victor at Washington State honorable mention,
he deserved that. I just I don't know. Jacob Cowing
probably make an argument for him, yep, elk Iman or
(59:24):
you know, maybe a little early for him to get
that second team, but he was He was really good, dude,
He was really good.
Speaker 4 (59:31):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (59:33):
They probably honestly, they probably nailed it. It was a
tough year receiver and they probably got it right.
Speaker 2 (59:41):
Could you have put could you have put Xavier Weaver
from Colorado in that conversation too?
Speaker 3 (59:54):
Maybe maybe he wasn't. Yeah, there was the consistence. See
right then Tess Johnson, Tess Johnson, if they had three
spots each might have been a second teamer for me. Actually,
but you also you got to take care of Jacob Cowing,
So finding Cowing and Tess Johnson in there probably would
have been would have been good for.
Speaker 2 (01:00:16):
Me or Jalen. Jalen Polk hasn't has an argument even
though you know is yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:00:22):
If Elijah Badger had had consistent quarterback play, he'd have
been in here. But yeah, tight end. Terrence Ferguson, I
like it. Jack Felling, I like that as well.
Speaker 2 (01:00:33):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (01:00:33):
Jalen Conyers Uh didn't get honorable mention, which bothers me
because he was having to play running back.
Speaker 2 (01:00:39):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I didn't like that. I thought he
definitely should have been honorable mention.
Speaker 4 (01:00:47):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:00:47):
And then the old line. I mean, you have on here,
uh two Oregon State players in the last year of
the PAC twelve. That just goes to show you that
Mitchell is it because he's the most important assistant coach
in the entire conference.
Speaker 2 (01:01:04):
Well the way, uh, ful Wanka is probably gonna be
a first round pick, a second round pick at the latest.
Speaker 3 (01:01:09):
Yeah, and Jordan Morgan is cool because he missed time
for Arizona, but he's probably a Day two NFL pick.
I don't see my guy on here though.
Speaker 2 (01:01:21):
From Washington.
Speaker 3 (01:01:23):
I don't see my guy. Is it Stephen Johnson at Oregon?
I don't see my guy on here.
Speaker 2 (01:01:26):
Steven Jones? Yeah, Jones, he got honorable.
Speaker 4 (01:01:29):
Mention, Come on now.
Speaker 3 (01:01:32):
But shout out to Parker Brailsford. I covered him in
high school. He's a red shirt freshman at Washington that
had to play because Matteo Melee went out for the
year and they went thirteen to oh So. I mean
he I don't know if he was expecting to even
have to be out there for him to get second
team honors. It's pretty cool. First team defense. I was
I thought that Braylen Trice was undervalued last year. This
(01:01:54):
year maybe overvalued question Mark as a first teamer. Brandon
Dorley a great. Jonah Ellis was awesome, awesome for Utah.
Uh Tafuna didn't he he He missed a couple of
games for for Utah. This is kind of the hit
or miss one. I think there's some guessing here on
(01:02:16):
on the defensive line. You know, I just I'm glad
to see that bj Green with the amount of quarterback
pressures that he levied that he got recognized and at
the time, at the same time, Deshaun Mallory, the team
voted him as you know, as the like defensive m
v P or whatever. But yeah, yeah, I defensive line
is fine to me.
Speaker 4 (01:02:37):
Uh. The uh the linebackers. Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:02:43):
Jacob Manu, he was part of that group that all
committed to Arizona out of Servite. How insane is it
that they got four players out of Servite? Two of
them are sophomores.
Speaker 2 (01:02:58):
That team beat My Day that year and they either
be Modern Day or Bosco that year, so instead of
Modern Day and Bosco being in the championship, it was oh,
they'd beat Bosco, I believe. And then they played in
the championship versus Modern Day, which is not a typical
thing that happened. That team was good because we played
against them when my son was in high school. But
(01:03:21):
that was t MAC was a one man wrecking crew.
Speaker 3 (01:03:27):
And then they did a couple of things with this
first team defense that I think will make you laugh.
How back twelve first team d back over Jabbar Mohammad
at Washington.
Speaker 2 (01:03:39):
Well, first of all, I do not think that Jabbar
Mohammad is as good as a lot of people as
the in terms of pro potential. That a lot of
people act like like he's cool, but he turns down
a lot of tackles and he's okay in coverage, like
he's good, but not as as good as you would
(01:04:02):
He's not as good as he as as his antics.
If that makes sense.
Speaker 3 (01:04:06):
I okay, I'll give you that. But he did lead
the team and for you know, and Washington didn't have
the greatest defense in the world, they still got to.
Speaker 2 (01:04:14):
Yeah, but Price is special.
Speaker 3 (01:04:18):
He could be. He really could be. I talked to
a high school coach of the of a school that
was in the middle of winning five straight championships at
the time, who said that Braylen Trice is the best
defender they've ever faced at the high school level. So
it's cool to see him like at times reaching his
potential out at Washington. But Sioni Vaki is funny to
(01:04:38):
me because they have Travis Hunter as a first teamer
as well. Both of these guys did more than one thing.
They're both incredibly talented. But Vaki obviously made his impact
on the audio.
Speaker 2 (01:04:50):
End up on first team instead of Cold Bishop.
Speaker 3 (01:04:53):
Yeah that's true, that's true, but I think it's because
he did more than one thing. And Sioni Vaki was
also given first team specialist. Yes, so I don't know.
I don't know how they figured all that out. Yeah,
all purpose specialists. That the Vaki thing is funny to me.
Travis Hunter probably could have been a second team receiver
(01:05:14):
along with being a first team defensive back. You know what,
the awards were fine, They were fine to me this year.
Speaker 2 (01:05:23):
They actually did a good job this year and it
didn't feel like they were trying to punish people, which.
Speaker 4 (01:05:28):
They have done in the past.
Speaker 3 (01:05:30):
Yes, they they did that to Arizona State really heavy
in the Herm years. But yeah, no, it just a
cool year. Shout out to UH to a couple of
guys that I really enjoyed covering at the high school level.
I know I say this all the time, but Akille Arnold,
he was at Mission v AH, one of my favorite players.
He's at Oregon State. He got honorable mention for defensive
(01:05:52):
back here. I think he missed the last few games
of the season for Oregon State, which kind of hurt them,
But Kenny Church, Well, I thought he to not see
more or UCLA players on the first team defense. Yeah,
only there because they really did have the best year.
They only had two players total on first and second team,
(01:06:12):
and I mean that just goes to maybe credit deont
de Anton Lynn. But when you when you look at
the honorable mentions, five of the six are on the
defensive side of the ball. So at least UCLA is
getting some recognition there.
Speaker 4 (01:06:24):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:06:24):
It is crazy to me that USC had as many
honorable mentions as they did in a seven win season.
They led the PAC twelve in honorable mentions and many
of them were on the defensive side of the ball,
including bar Alexander Solomon Bird Like, come on, come on,
nothing against those players, but for for you USC to
(01:06:46):
lead the PAC twelve and honorable mentions, No.
Speaker 2 (01:06:51):
Yes, so yeah. So any other news that you want
to get to on this show.
Speaker 3 (01:07:01):
No, No, I think next week we're gonna do a
deep dive on all these teams talk Bowl games. I'm
really excited to get to that. But just wanted to
check in and let the people know that George Reister
was not hiding after the result of the Pactwal Championship.
Speaker 2 (01:07:14):
Not even a little bit. Bro. We've been. We've been
out here in these streets, man, out here in these streets,
making content and everything else. Man, love it, love it,
love it. But you guys, I'm George Reiser, He's Ralph Ampston.
This is the PAC Twelve Apostles,
