Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is cut to It with Steve Smith Senior at
production of The Black Effect and I Heart Radio. I'm
Steve Smith Senior and this is a cut to It
bonus episode. Good Good. There is so much happening in
the football world right now, we're going to cut to it.
(00:23):
One of the experts for a segment we like to
call break it down. And really what breaking it down
is whatever that current event is going on, whether it
is a team is stricken with the coronavirus or like
I talked to Brian Mitchell. We just talked about some
(00:44):
of the things going on. No preseason. It's gonna impact
teams and then so I love to call it no preseason.
I like to kind of breaking down in segments. Generally
in football, there's uh the season is broken up into
four quarters. So the first quarters in September. October is
the second one. Um just like a financial quarter, right,
(01:06):
so everything going on, so Septem, I'm calling September sloppy September.
Then you have October, the second quarter, which would be
awful October, and then the third quarter November. It will
be a bounce back November and then December. You really
understand and understand your team, you understand that possibly the
(01:29):
injuries that you've sustained, So uh, smooth it out December,
because listen, if your team is awful in December, they're
pretty much getting ready to go on vacation and head
to some warmer places. And now with everything going on,
driving to some warmer places. So Brian Mitchell gave us
a great understanding of an old school type of mentality,
(01:53):
but also the current climate and what he thinks about
UM really why there's a rash of injuries, what and
how it will impact teams and then really from an
an analytical and an analyst perspective, how does that impact
UM the season? And so he gave us some really
good information. Uh. I was really shocked to hear. Uh,
(02:16):
just how he breaks things down. And Brian Mitchell, if
you don't know who Brian Mitchell is, he's a guy
that stray shoot. So I know I'm a straight shooter,
but Brian, he just he'll hit you in between eyes,
almost like the three Stooges, Right, He'll hit you right
between eyes and you don't even know what's coming. So, um,
I hope you enjoy it. Really look forward to see
(02:38):
who else we can get their professional opinion, and also
um the fans perspective from the couch, because if you know,
just like a lot of teams, they're only letting maybe
seven or ten or fifteen percent of the fans in
the stadium. So a lot of times, if you're lucky
enough to get a seat in the stands, you're like
the rest of us. Man, you are on the couch
(03:00):
or sitting in your favorite chair watching the game, maybe
with a beverage in your hand, or maybe a chicken wing. Right.
And for some folks that don't need meet maybe um
Montareali stick, I don't know, but enjoy, appreciate you, thank
you for tuning in, and uh here you are. Why
(03:22):
do you believe right now that they are twenty plus
players injured in the league today? The lack of preparation,
and the reason I say that is because even beyond preseason.
I know people who hate preseason, but it has its value.
(03:43):
But they didn't have off season training, They don't have volts,
didn't have many camps, they didn't have training camps, so
you didn't have that build up period to get your
body ready for it. How do you see this season
shaping out? It's only week two going into it's going
on going into week three. Um, I have the same,
(04:04):
So I have September is sloppy, September, October, it's all
for October. Bounce back November and smooth it out. The
said the show mark, which one you got one of them?
Is like the show me Mark that's Missouri. No not
(04:26):
you know what I say? How do you how do
you see? How do you see the season shaping up
with the lack of preseason, with all the injuries that's
going on. And you're old school players, so you already
know the impact of the virus, the impact of the
(04:47):
inability to have hand to hand combat on the practice field,
have that muscle memory that we all know has to happen,
because if it doesn't, you're gonna keep You're gonna continue
to see guys blowing tires like this. Yeah, and I
believe that injuries are gonna dictate this season. Okay, uh,
(05:10):
as it always does, but it's gonna be even more
prevalent this year because with the fact that normally injuries
happen in training camp and you have a chance to
go get some players that can come in and help
alleviate some of the loss. Now, you're in season and
most of those people are already signed by some other
team or whatever. And I think the teams that can
deal with injuries the best are gonna be there, and
(05:31):
then the team that has the best leadership because you
just like, I know that as these seasons goes on,
these guys start winning and more, these states start opening up,
and then they started having the clubs to go to.
Some guys are not gonna be doing and stuff that
they're doing right now, like staying at home and not
you know, being around people in testing possions. Yeah, so
all of a sudden when they start traveling out again,
(05:53):
like uh, COVID can be an injury because if a
guy catches it, he's out for what nine attend days,
well days, So now you may miss two weeks. Suppose
you got a game on Sunday, game on Thursday. Maybe
it's two games. Those things are going to affect people.
So the guys that like have the leadership to where
those young guys may listen to them more, they have
(06:14):
a better hold on their team, and the guys that
don't get as injured as much as much, those teams
may end up being the best because let's think about it.
All the people that San Francisco lost in that one week,
they lose a few more. Some of these teams that
we don't expect to do a damn thing that don't
get don't get a lot of injuries here, they may
end up sneaking into something. It's gonna it's gonna change
(06:35):
up things this year. How big of an impact is
a se Kwon Barkley to already boo boo team with
the New York Giants or a team like the Carolina
Panthers where they're they're running backs, man, that they're the
they're the workhorse of their team. It is that whole
(06:56):
offense goes as they go. Those guys are not there
now one that's gonna hurt because he's an unbelievable talent.
Uh and they do so much play action and and
when you put it into the gut of say Kwan,
you get a reaction from the defense. You put into
the gut of somebody else that backs him up, you
don't get that same reaction Christian McCaffrey when he's not
(07:17):
on your team in Carolina where they expect him to
do so much, can all those other running backs to
everything he can do because I know for sure that
that that offensive game plan was built because of Christian McCaffrey. Yeah,
so your other your other money backs don't have to
if they can't have if they don't have the same ability,
they won't have the same effect and the effect to
(07:39):
the Passion game through these two weeks. What's one thing
you've been surprised about and then one thing that maybe
you expected to happen. Well, I would been surprised that
nobody tested positive. I'm gonna be honest with youring that
I was surprised totally about that. Uh, what I did
not expect to happen. I did not think that, uh
(08:00):
the Raiders were gonna do the things like that, because
I haven't seen that. I haven't seen that consistent car
to where I can believe in him enough. But it
seemed like Gruden's constant scrutiny and getting on him has
kind of eventually when when someone is like scrutinizing you
and and getting on you, either you just fold or
(08:22):
you start fighting back. Yeah, and I think he started
to fight back. He showed me something last night. I
didn't expect to see that, you know, and and I mean,
you know, San Francisco. I was looking at them to
do some stuff. Um, I was like Russell Wilson, Hell,
he know, he never surprised me. But this dude. Everybody
keep talking about all these people that were m vps
(08:44):
a chance of being m v P. Do they forget
that dude in Seattle what he's doing. I'm baffled how
he gets better every single year? What are you padding?
Nine testdowns already? This year three he had four and
then he had five the last one so well. And
the way he's doing it, He's not doing it with
(09:05):
a lot of fanfare. He's just like he's just consistent.
It's like he and I hate to say it this way,
but it's like he's playing dominoes. He's not scoring points.
It's like Nickel tim maybe a fifteen, back to five,
back to ten, and then you look up y'all going
(09:25):
to two fifty. That brother got a hundred seventy five points.
You know you three games? How did that happen? Just
like he thinks the game, and I think we look
at a bunch of these like mobile quarterbacks they call him,
and they think that they have to be running backs.
(09:45):
Russell don't get hit a lot when he breaks out,
he runs get that little I think a defensive player guy.
That's the most upset. He's running around for like fifteen
minutes and then the slides and you can't hear it.
He does it over and over again, like we got,
we got, Damn we just ran first down back on
the field with three more players. Thank you for listening
