Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Fitness Disrupted, a production of I Heart Radio.
I am Tom Holland, and this is Fitness Disrupted. So
I was at a hockey tournament away from home a

(00:21):
while back, and we're going out to dinner, the hockey
team doing some car pooling, and I had a bunch
of kids and a bunch of parents and we're all
jumping in my truck, my suv, And when we got in,
one of the moms looked around and remarked at how
clean the truck was. Now, let me say that I
am not someone who won't let you eat in my truck.

(00:43):
I am not someone who doesn't get it dirty. I
have two dogs, two labs that are in the truck
just about every day, and when they are in the truck,
they're wet and dirty from swimming and going in the woods.
And I'm doing car pools frequently and a lot to kids,
lots of eating and drinking. And I'm not someone who

(01:03):
says you can't. And so why is it that clean? Well,
it goes to everything I preach here on Fitness Disrupted.
It goes to excessive moderation. And when you start to
embrace that concept and the other ones I talk about.
You will see that it applies to fitness, and it

(01:25):
applies to nutrition, and it applies to so many facets
of our lives. End it makes it easier, not harder.
The alternative is harder. And so this fit tip is
about car washes, consistency, and change. I love alliteration if

(01:48):
you haven't caught on yet from the titles of many
of my podcasts. But there's so much in my truck
and car washes and consistency and change that we can
apply to exercise, nutrition and living our best bibs, right,

(02:12):
And it's about doing a little bit a lot rather
than a lot a little bit. So let me just
give you this perfect analogy for this fit tip. Two.
Reinforce how much I believe in and practice excessive moderation
and everything I do because it works, all right. So

(02:36):
I got the new truck actually probably a year ago,
not even yeah, maybe a little over a year ago.
And as I like to say, there's a great meme.
I don't have O c D. Doesn't mean that it's
like I don't have O c D. I just like
putting things in there. They used an expletive place I'm
not going to. But there is a difference between being

(02:56):
my mom was over the top. I would argue with
with Klein litness, but when you have six boys you
kind of need uh that that's a whole different ball
of act, right, But no, I just believe in maintenance
and consistency and not letting things get to a point.

(03:19):
I'm getting ahead of myself, as I often do when
you have to make major change, and oftentimes you can't
because you didn't do the things that I'm going to outline.
So the analogy is simple. Car wash opened up really
close to my house, less than a mile, probably half
a mile, and that is extremely important. And a bunch

(03:44):
of these factors align exactly with things like Jim's. So
when people ask me Tom what Jim should I join?
My first question is which one is closest to your
house or where you work? Where? Where are you going
to go from? Are you gonna go from your house?
You're you gonna go from your work? Okay, which is
closest because that is the most important thing relative to

(04:07):
how frequently you go. It's not how expensive, it is,
not how much you like it, And like literally a
mile can make a difference. And many of you know
that you've experienced that already you've joined those gyms that
you haven't gone to, and you thought, well, this is
two miles from my house I'm gonna go, or two
miles from my work I'm gonna go. Can't be that far.
That can be far, and it's different for everyone. What's

(04:29):
too far? But if this was a mile farther away
from my house and not in my normal path that
I'm going out every day, I wouldn't have done it.
Because this leads to number two. So you got the
closeness right location, location, location, And then they have a

(04:51):
monthly unlimited car wash fee you can pay for this,
you know, gets taken off your credit card, debit card,
whatever every month unlimited. When I see unlimited, I'm like,
I'm in. But it's not cheap. It's not expensive, but

(05:12):
it's as expensive as what, just like a gym, how
frequently you go. And so this car wash, the monthly
fee is about a little less than two car washes.
So if you go three times a month, you're already
ahead of the game. Now I don't go three times,
so on I go a minimum pretty much of eight.

(05:36):
So I go every Friday to have it cleaned from
the prior week and ready for the weekend because again
often traveling, doing sports, whatever, and then Monday cleaned up
for the week. So get it ready for the weekend,
get it ready for the week, and then if there's
snow generally in the winter, I might go again on Wednesday.

(05:59):
So minimum generally of eight times a month. So when
you take that monthly fee, which is enough to make
me want to go, I'm not wasting that money. There's
no way. I'm not going a minimum of well eight,
but at the very least three. But I've never gotten

(06:19):
that low because I don't want to waste my money.
Same exact concept as a gym. When I owned the gym,
which I always said I would never do, I started
out with a hundred dollar monthly rate, hundred dollars Connecticut gym,
twelve square feet, full service classes, the whole nine yards.

(06:41):
Actually getting hot flashes just thinking about it again because
it was such a crazy experience that I said I
would never do. But I learned a lot. But when
people would come in, I sold memberships like crazy. And
one of the things I would say is for that
hundred dollars, you can come every day, you can come
twice a day. You can take yoga in the morning,
you can take you know, spin class the evening. You
can use all these weights like it is as expensive

(07:05):
as the number of times you use it. Car washes, gyms,
so many things exactly the same. No, why does a
car wash and why do jims do that? Why do
gyms have ten dollars as a monthly female bi price
high volume because they know you don't care. If you
don't go at all, you'll eat that ten bucks. Well

(07:29):
that's genius, I mean, and it's frightening. The number of
members of some of these gyms thousands, thousands, and if
showed up at the same time, chaos and so the
same exact concept with car wash. I'm going frequently. I'm
getting more than my money's worth. But it's convenient. It's

(07:53):
in my you know, common roots that I'm going. You know,
I don't have to go in a different direction, so
it's not a close it's in my flight plan, and
it's expensive. If the opposite, I don't want it to
be ten bucks because they don't go. Ah, not a
big deal. I don't have to go this Friday, don't
have to go this Monday. You go, So what's a

(08:13):
big deal. It's not that expensive. You're not going that's
where I'm going to end up because it's about maintenance.
It's about maintenance. I never let the car get to
the point where I have to make a major overhaul
like so many people do that New Year's well, right

(08:34):
before the summer, you go, look at what's happened, look
at what I've let myself get to, and now you
need to make major change. No small steps are the
best steps there are. They all lead you forward towards
your goal, and they don't get your hurt, and they're

(08:55):
not hard. You just have to be consistent. And so
such a perfect analogy with our bodies. Are cars. Car
wash clean it frequently, so you never get to that
point where you go, oh my gosh, no I gotta
pay two d bucks or whatever it is. Let's get
the whole thing overhauld. And here's the final kicker with that.

(09:17):
When you get to that point, they are oftentimes what
things you can't clean, things that won't come out right,
that candy that you let the kids, you know, eat
that if you had gotten it up quickly enough, it
wouldn't be an issue, just like your body, but when
you let it go too long, it's exponentially more difficult

(09:39):
to deal with if you can deal with it at all.
Boom like, I am loving this analogy. You know, we
talked about the car analogy with fuel put on a
you know, cheap gas in get cheap performance. It's a
good one. It's been around forever, though. I like this
one even better because it has all the components not

(10:00):
only of gyms, but of a fitness plan in general.
And it just shows you that doing a little bit
a lot twice a week for this incredible. And I
always say I'm gonna have had done this, but another
thing just came to me. Not in my notes. I
enjoy myself. It's like I'm not the one in the

(10:24):
car saying to the kids, Oh, I can't have that,
don't eat that. I don't worry about it because if
there's a big spill or if something happens, I'm going
half a mile to the car Washington dealing with it
because I've already paid for it. And so there you
have it. There are no secrets, people, it's doing the simple,

(10:47):
basic stuff consistently that works. We are bombarded, I ambarded
with products and potions and programs that are supposedly never
been seeing for the hacks. But what No, there's nothing
that works better than consistency of the basics. But you

(11:11):
have to have those different elements convenience, actually invest enough
that it matters. That's totally counterintuitive for you. That's one
reason people. I never wanted to own a gym because
I didn't want to sell memberships in the hopes that
you didn't come. And that's the model. That's the model.

(11:34):
You don't make money. If you charge ten dollars and
you have a hundred members, you go out of business.
And so think about it. Car washes consistency and change
and start to utilize excessive moderation in all aspects of

(11:56):
your life. Oh, I feel good about that one, all right.
I love my job. Uh. If you want to reach out, complaints, comments, questions,
