Both projects are participatory photography books and PBS documentaries on the related subject matter. Utilizing artistic means to redefine one’s own image dates back thousands of years. Participatory photography emerged in 1992 when a group of American women providing agricultural and medical aid in China, found that when local farmers were equipped with cameras and trained to document their own lives, the photography elicited a new visual narrative and shattered stereotypes.
