and that's what anchors you forever.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
Hi.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
I'm doctor Andrew Farley, and welcome to today's episode of
the Heartbeat of Faith podcast. We're exploring things God cares
deeply about. He cares about rest, holiness, justice, and the outcast.
Today we take a look at his passion for promises
or covenants. God has made promises for the benefit of

(03:33):
his people. For example, one promise we've seen was between
God and Noah when he promised never to flood the
earth again.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
After a month had passed, Noah opened the door and
saw that the land was dry. God beckoned Noah to
come out of the ark. So Noah brought his family
and the animals out of the ark a sacrifice to
the Lord, just as Abel did before them. God was
pleased to receive their offering and vowed to never flood

(04:09):
the earth again. So God gave Noah permission to eat
animals and plants so they might multiply the earth again.
With the newness of life. God put a rainbow in
the sky as a symbol of his promises. The story
of evil does not end here, but the story of
God and his passion to preserve and protect those he

(04:32):
loves is still unfolding. Evil abounds, but the promises of
God prevail still.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
After God made his promise to Noah and the earth,
he made another promise to Abraham, who was childless and
worried about his lineage. Continuing on, God made a promise
that would benefit Abraham and his descendants.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
Abram, filled with sadness, looked to God, saying, O, Lord,
you say you want to bless me and my descendants,
Yet I remain childless. Shall I be forced to give
all that I have to a servant of my household?
Shall he inherit my land? God, with tender love and compassion,

(05:23):
spoke gently to Abram. Look to the skies. See how
the stars are countlessly scattered throughout the universe. Your descendants
will be just as these stars, great in number and
abounding in beauty. Abram, despite the doubt and anguish in
his heart, believed God. It was this faith that God

(05:44):
counted as righteousness. It was this faith that God would
bless him with Again. God spoke, saying, I am the
one who brought you out of Er and the land
of the Chaldeans. I brought you out to give you
this land to take possess enough, because I am the Lord.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
Through Abraham, God would establish a nation. Through that nation,
the entire world was blessed. The only thing Abraham did
was have faith in God. Abraham sometimes failed to believe God.
But the beautiful thing about a promise from God is
that his power can hold both sides. In fact, in

(06:26):
the New Testament, in Roman's For, Paul writes that Abraham
did not waver in faith, but grew strong. Did not waver,
but wait a minute, he got nervous, so nervous that
he ended up having a child with another woman because
he wasn't sure that God would give him an air

(06:48):
through his wife Sarah. That certainly sounds like wavering to me.
How about you, well? This inspired scripture in Roman's For
shows a God's perspective on our wavering, our doubt, and
our failures. God keeps no record of our wrongs. God

(07:09):
saw Abraham as having never wavered, and he sees you
the same way too. In another promise that God gave
to Abraham, Abe actually fell asleep. He woke up and
the promise had already been signed, sealed, and delivered. Yet
another reminder that God does the promise keeping, we just

(07:31):
trust him. Yes, God upholds his promise even when we stumble.
Our relationship with God hinges on his faithfulness, not ours.
He holds the stars by his power, keeps the earth
on its axis, and carries both ends of the New
Covenant promise on his shoulders. In contrast, we see in

(07:55):
the Old Testament Israel, who despite their best effort, couldn't
seem to keep their promises to God. God gave them
six hundred and thirteen commands in the Law to keep,
but they couldn't uphold them. Maybe that was the whole point.
God wanted them to see that He is the only

(08:16):
true promise keeper.

Speaker 4 (08:21):
Tell the people of Israel that I have bore them
on eagle's wings to save them from the Egyptians. If
you obey my commands and keep my promises, you will
be my treasured possession among all people groups, for all
the earth is mine, and you shall be my holy nation.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
You heard it. God wanted Israel to obey his commands
in the Law and in Exodus twenty four, we see
Israel promising God, we will obey everything they said, everything
written in the Book of the Law. Shortly after that oath,
they were smelting a golden calf and worshiping it as

(09:04):
an idol. Throughout the Old Testament, the prophets often portrayed
Israel as an unfaithful bride who cheated on her husband.
But God's promise to David foreshadowed a redeemer, a king
who would establish a kingdom forever.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
When your days are fulfilled and you sleep with your fathers,
I will set up your offspring after you, who will
proceed out of your body, and I will establish his kingdom.
He will build a house for my name, and I
will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. Two Samuel

(09:46):
seven twelve through thirteen.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
God promised David that a king would arise through his descendants.
His kingdom would last forever. That promised king was Jesus Christ,
the high priest of a new covenant founded on better promises.
In the Book of Hebrews were reminded that God, in
his infinite wisdom, could swear by no one greater, so

(10:14):
he swore by himself. It is through Jesus, our High Priest,
that we have access to this new covenant, which surpasses
the old in every way. The writer of Hebrews goes
on to highlight the two unchangeable things that anchor our souls,

(10:35):
God and God. Yes, these two unchangeables God and God
provide us with the security of our salvation. When we
understand that our salvation is not dependent on our own
promises or actions, but on the perfect promise keeping of Jesus,

(10:56):
it brings immense comfort and peace. Often find ourselves fearing
that our shortcomings or failures may jeopardize our salvation. However,
the truth is our salvation is held securely by God
and God alone. Our eternal security is not in our hands,

(11:17):
but it's in the hands of the one who is
faithful and true. So I encourage you to reflect on
what truly anchors your soul. Is it your promises to God?
Or is it God's promises to himself which are rooted
in his unchanging nature. Embrace the truth that your salvation

(11:40):
is secure in the hands of Jesus, the perfect promise keeper.
Let go of any fear or doubt, and rest in
the assurance that He'll never let you go. You're held
eternally by the one who is faithful to himself forever.
Permanent salvation is found in him and in him alone.

Speaker 3 (12:07):
Brothers and sisters, Our King David died and was buried
in his tomb. You can still visit it today, but
the tomb of Jesus is empty. He is raised. Let
all the House of Israel therefore know for certain that
God has made him both Lord and Christ. Peter paused
for a moment, looking at the lost souls that stood

(12:29):
before him. Repent, Repent, and be baptized for forgiveness and atonement.
For your sins are in Jesus and no longer in
the temple. All who are far off come.
