Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hunting for Answers is a production of the Black Effect
Podcast Network and iHeartRadio. Welcome to Hunting for Answers, a
true crime podcast. I'm your host Hunter, and today we're
highlighting a case that happened on October seventh, twenty twenty five.
A forty one year old mother was shopping with her

(00:21):
daughter at a Dallas strip mall. She did something that
most of us do without thinking. She held the door
open for a stranger. That simple act of courtesy would
spiral into a confrontation that moved from store to store,
escalating with each encounter until it ended in gunfire and

(00:43):
a pet smart parking lot. This is the story of
Cecilia Simpson. Tuesday, October seven, twenty twenty five, early afternoon
in southwest Dallas, the Wheatland Town Crossing shopping center was

(01:04):
busy with the usual midweek traffic, parents with children, people
running errands, nothing out of the ordinary. Forty one year
old Cecilia Simpson was there with her twenty year old daughter.
They had been shopping at five Below, a discount stoor
within the plaza. As they left, Cecilia did what many

(01:25):
people often do. She held the door open for the
person behind her. That person was twenty two year old
Keana Hampton. According to witnesses, Hampton didn't say thank you
for Cecilia Simpson had struck a nerve. She became upset.

(01:46):
Words were exchanged and an argument began right there outside
five below. Cecilia and her daughter walked away, got into
their car, and drove across the parking lot to Pay's Smart,
but Hampton didn't leave. She followed on foot, walking toward

(02:06):
the same store. Inside pet Smart, Cecilia told employees they
were being followed. She was concerned. Moments later, Hampton entered
the store and immediately began arguing with Cecilia's daughter. Then
she left, but it wasn't over. Several minutes later, Hampton returned.

(02:33):
This time she confronted Cecilia directly. The argument resumed inside
the store, loud enough that employees had to intervene. Both
women were asked to leave. What happened next was witnessed
by multiple people, including a reported twenty seven year old

(02:55):
emergency room nurse who had just walked out of the
Pets Smart. In the parking lot, Cecilia and her daughter
were getting into their vehicle ready to leave, but Keana
Hampton threw a drink bottle at their car. Cecilia got out,
she walked over to Hampton and the argument continued. Witnesses

(03:18):
heard Hampton taunting her, come outside, Let's handle this outside.
Let's fight outside. Cecilia's daughter pleaded with Hampton to leave
them alone. They tried to de escalate the situation, but
Keana Hampton wasn't backing down. Then it became more physical.

(03:41):
Cecilia struck Hampton several times, yelling at her to leave
them alone. Her daughter stepped back, trying to distance herself
from the fight. That's when police say Hampden pulled out
a black and silver handgun. Three shots rang out across
the parking lot. Then Cecilia Simpson fell to the ground.

(04:05):
They Eat Our nurse, who had witnessed the confrontation, says
she immediately ran to help, with Cecilia's daughter right beside her.
She began performing CPR. Other bystanders called nine one one.
They Eat Our. Nurse told local news that Cecilia's daughter
was beside her mother the entire time, screaming for her.

(04:28):
She would later describe it as a sound that would
never leave her head, the screaming of a child for
her mother is never easy, she told reporters. I just
want her to know I did everything I could. Dallas
Fire Rescue arrived and rushed Cecilia to Methodist Central Hospital.

(04:52):
Despite their efforts, it was too late. Cecilia had suffered
multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
After the shooting, Keana Hampton walked quickly to her black
Ford five hundred and left the scene. Surveillance cameras captured

(05:12):
the entire sequence, the escalating confrontation, the tragic shooting, and
Hampton leaving with the gun in her hand. Dallas police
moved fast. They obtained surveillance footage and identified the vehicle.
They ran the plates and got an address. Officers set

(05:34):
up undercover surveillance at the registered owner's apartment. Within hours,
they spotted Keana Hampton on the balcony, still wearing the
same clothing from the shooting. At seven forty five that evening,
just over six hours after Cecilia was killed, police conducted

(05:56):
a traffic stop on the black Ford five hundred. Tehampton
was taken into custody without incident. At Dallas Police headquarters,
Keana Hampton waived her Miranda rights and agreed to talk.
She confirmed the confrontation at five below, following Cecilia to
pet Smart, throwing the drink bottle, and the fatal shooting.

(06:22):
She claimed that she was trying to get Cecilia away
from her and felt she needed to use the gun
when the daughter became involved. Keana Hampton was charged with murder.
She remains in the Dallas County Jail. As of now,
her bond has not been set. The case is still
moving through the legal system, but for Cecilia's family, no

(06:45):
courtroom verdict will bring her back. Cecilia Simpson was forty
one years old. She was a mother. She was just
shopping with her daughter on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon. She
held the door open for someone, and what followed was
a series of unfortunate events that escalated in everyday moment

(07:08):
into something deadly. This incident shows how seemingly minor moments
in everyday life can quickly spiral into disaster, turning simple
courtesies or misunderstandings into fatal confrontations. Cecilia Simpson's story is

(07:30):
still unfolding. The legal process will ultimately determine what happens next,
but the broader story about how we treat each other,
how we handle conflict, how quickly things can spiral. That
story is one that we all can reflect on. Nobody
had to lose their life that day. My thoughts and

(07:53):
prayers are with the family and friends of Cecilia Simpson.

could help investigators, please contact the Dallas Police Department. Their

we close out this episode, remember that sharing Cecilia Simpson's

(08:14):
story brings awareness, highlighting how everyday moments can turn tragic,

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
