Speaker 1 (00:03):
Hi, and welcome to Grown Up with Emily, a Lingo
kids podcast. It helps kids discover the amazing jobs that
are out there in the world.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Going up. Well oh yeah, side, Oh.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Emily, you scared me.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Waitson, you scared me? And where did all this trash
come from?

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Well, first, don't be scared.

Speaker 4 (00:44):
I thought i'd come into the lab and, you know,
get things organized for you.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Oh, I appreciate that, but what's with the mess? This
place looks more like a dump than a super rad
job research lab.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Sorry about that.

Speaker 4 (00:58):
Turns out I'm kind of messy, but I only wanted
to help.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
Love the enthusiasm. But you're an assistant, not a house
guest who stayed too long. We've got to clean this up,
help me out. That's your thing, you know, Winston. I
don't think you should be drinking all of this soda.
It's not good for you.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
It's sorry. I meant to pick that up, but then
I got.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Distracted, distracted, distracted by what.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
Well I was looking out the front window.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
What were you doing looking out the front window? Bird watching?

Speaker 3 (01:31):
Are you kidding? That's for the birds?

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Oh boy, we've got a jokester.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
Did you hear that? Emily? It's what I was looking for.
Music to my ears?

Speaker 1 (01:45):
What is that, Winston?

Speaker 3 (01:47):
It's the garbage trunk.

Speaker 4 (01:49):
It's so big and loud, sticky and majestic.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
Majestic.

Speaker 5 (01:54):
Huh.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
I don't know about that, But we should get these
bags out before the truck passes.

Speaker 4 (02:00):
You know, I this is silly, but I've always wanted
to ride along in a garbage truck.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Do you think they'd let us?

Speaker 1 (02:07):
Maybe we can ask, but hurry. The truck would be
here any second. Have we got any more trash for
these trash bags?

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (02:15):
Jude? What about this old newspaper?

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Perfect?

Speaker 4 (02:20):
Let's see some glass bottles that works too, Oh and
an old rubber chicken.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Where'd that come from?

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (02:28):
That was mine? Okay, let's go, Emily, let's grab a ride.

Speaker 4 (02:33):
Who time to go pick up some garbage? Oh wow,
Look how high off the ground we are. All the
other cars look so small from up here.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
We are pretty high up. But you know, garbage collectors
have a much more important job than driving this awesome
truck all day. Right.

Speaker 4 (02:54):
Well, some garbage trucks come to pick up trash at night, too, right, Emily, They.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
Do, actually, especially in bigger cities. It's nice to wake
up to clean streets.

Speaker 4 (03:04):
Did you hear that the big truck's claws picking up
that trash?

Speaker 5 (03:08):
Can?

Speaker 3 (03:09):
Wow? Check this out?

Speaker 1 (03:11):
What are you doing whenson?

Speaker 3 (03:13):
Well, I'm giving this joystick a try.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
Whoa, wha, wha, whoa, be careful. What does that thing do?

Speaker 4 (03:18):
The garbage collector controls the big claw in the truck
with the joystick just like a video game.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
Wow, that trash must be really heavy.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
It takes a lot of strength to lift them. When
I was little, garbage collectors had to pick up all
the trash bends with their bare hands.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
Didn't the cans have wheels?

Speaker 1 (03:38):
Nope? It was extra hard without wheels. And actually, an
even longer time ago, when cities started to get crowded,
people through their trash in the street and just burnted
in piles.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
Yikes. Oh I bet it was really dirty.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
And really smelly too. That's why the job of garbage
collectors was created.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Pew, Emily, Can I ask you a question?

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Sure?

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Winson?

Speaker 1 (04:02):
What's up?

Speaker 3 (04:03):
So?

Speaker 4 (04:03):
I was wondering what a garbage collectors do with all
the trash they pick up, Like where do they take it?

Speaker 1 (04:09):
Those are great questions. I'm sure we'll find all of
it out in a bit.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
One, two, three for five six. There are so many
trash cans on every street. Garbage collectors have to pick
up so much. How do they fit it all into
the truck?

Speaker 1 (04:24):
You hear that, that's the sound of the garbage truck
crashing all of the junk to make more space. That
way they can add even more to the back of
the truck.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
No way, it crushes the trash yep.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
And it's so strong that it could smush a big
minivan down to the size of a refrigerator.

Speaker 4 (04:47):
Whoa like crush You get two spucks in your hand
before throwing it away.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
That almost makes me feel like a superhero.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
Yeah, me too, Hey watching mister, Sure that was really close.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
You're right, garbage collectors have to be good drivers too.
This is an important job, so it's good to pay
attention and stay safe.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
Why is being a garbage collector such an important job.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
Emily, Well, people produce a lot of trash. Without garbage collectors,
things would get messy really really quickly. Our homes would
be dirty, and all the junk would spill out into
the forests, lakes, and oceans too.

Speaker 4 (05:28):
I heard a story about a deer that got caught
in a bunch of wires that someone threw out by
the road once. Leaving trash outside isn't fair to the
animals who live there.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
I agree, that's not very nice. Oh, sounds like the
garbage trucks slowing down. I guess we'll find out where
the trash goes soon.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
So awesome.

Speaker 4 (05:46):
I can't wait to see where the garbage goes.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
Oh wow, a mountain made a junk.

Speaker 4 (05:56):
Hey, watch what I could do with this plastic chug
Emily's trash mountain. Please keep your helmets on and your
noses plugged Wincent.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
You shouldn't touch that jug. Studies have shown that there
may be more than four hundred harmful germs per square
inch lurking in your garbage can. Some of those germs
can make you sick if you touch the garbage can
and then touch your eyes, nose, or mouth before washing
your hands.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
Oh thanks for letting me know.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
Here you some of this hand sanitizer.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
Wow, thanks, Emily, But where are we This is a landfilm.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
It's where garbage collectors dump all of our junk.

Speaker 3 (06:34):
What's that smell? It's a little.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
Stinky, Probably food scraps and leftovers that people throughout. It's
good that we have a place to put all of
our gunk and junk, right, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
Sure is.

Speaker 5 (06:47):
Wait, who would throw a piano away? Oh it works
kind of whoa, I think it's a space.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
I think that's part of an old boat.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Huh. Well, I bet I could turn it into a
really cool fort.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
That would be recycling. One person's trash is another person's
treasure after.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
All, trajer like pirates or what do you mean?

Speaker 1 (07:15):
Remind me and I'll tell you a story about it
in a bit. You know, back in the day, this
junkyard was just a bunch of big holes people dug
in the ground. Really yep, they dug them so we'd
have somewhere safe to put all the garbage that we
can't reuse. Over time, that trash piled up really high
into big mounds like all the ones at this landfill.

(07:37):
Can you imagine if we had nowhere to put all
of this junk?

Speaker 4 (07:41):
No way, garbage collectors really do help keep our world clean.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
It's a big job, and that's why we need to
help them.

Speaker 3 (07:49):
Yeah, but how do we do that? Emily?

Speaker 1 (07:51):
Yeah, I thought you'd never ask. Onto our next stop
on the garbage collecting tour on the board. Well, what
do you think this is a recycling center.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
And those people are tidying up all the.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
Trash kind of, they're sorting the glass into one pile,
classic in another, and paper in another too.

Speaker 4 (08:24):
Well, look out, here've come the bottles.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
Ready to be recycled and reused.

Speaker 4 (08:29):
Well, why would we want to reuse sticky old soda bottles?

Speaker 1 (08:32):
Yeah, no, no, no, Reusing trash is a good thing.
We can make new things with old trash, and don't worry.
Everything that's recycled gets cleaned really really well.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Oh well that makes me feel better.

Speaker 4 (08:46):
Hey, Ellie, yeah, I have a joke about recycling, you do, Yeah,
but unfortunately it's already been used.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
Good one. Instead, what's happening to the bottles now? Is
that a giant dishwasher sort of?

Speaker 1 (09:01):
All of the glass bottles are washed in soapy water.
Once they're sparkly clean, they're crushed into tiny little pieces.

Speaker 3 (09:09):
But why do they crush up the glass?

Speaker 1 (09:11):
Well, they crush the glass so that they can melt
it down and make new things like windows or beautiful
beads used in jewelry.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
No way you can make jewelry out of old bottles.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
That's crazy, it is, isn't it. Who knows? Maybe a
juice bottle you recycle will end up as a pretty
necklace someday.

Speaker 3 (09:30):
I mean that would be totally awesome.

Speaker 4 (09:32):
Is that what you meant when you said one person's
trash is another person's treasure.

Speaker 1 (09:36):
That's one way to look at it. Yes, but sometimes
people throw away things that are in good shape and
that other people might want to use.

Speaker 3 (09:44):
Well, what do you mean?

Speaker 1 (09:46):
Well, say you toss out an old toy train that
you don't play with anymore. Another kid could find it
and add it to their own trainset.

Speaker 4 (09:54):
Wow, I guess you can find some real treasures in
the trash.

Speaker 1 (09:58):
You sure can. In south of Maya, one day, a
trash collector was just doing his job picking up the
trash when he noticed something different. What was it? It
was a book. Someone had thrown out a copy of
his favorite book with a beautiful cover and a shiny
silver design. He was excited, but he got even more

(10:18):
excited when he opened up all the nearby bins and
found are you ready for this, a whole bookstore worth
of books thrown in the trash.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
What like kids books too?

Speaker 2 (10:29):
Comic books?

Speaker 3 (10:30):
Why would someone throw away that many books.

Speaker 1 (10:33):
I don't know, but this garbage collector did something really cool.
He took all the books out of the bends and
put them into a brand new library for his community.
How awesome is that?

Speaker 3 (10:45):
And now everybody can use them? I get it now.

Speaker 4 (10:49):
One person's trash is another person's treasure exactly.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
That's why it's always good to donate or give away
things that other people could use instead of throwing them
away to get buried in a landfill.

Speaker 3 (11:01):
Huh.

Speaker 4 (11:02):
Hey, Emily, do you think if I donate my homework
someone else would do it for me?

Speaker 1 (11:08):
Nice drive? But I don't think that's how it works, buddy.
Why don't we get back to the lab. We've got
some cleaning up to do of our own.

Speaker 4 (11:20):
Cleaning is a lot of work, But you know what, Emily,
I like picking up my own trash because it keeps
everything clean and it helps the garbage collectors do their job.

Speaker 1 (11:33):
That's true. Hey, can you toss that canon to the
recycling bin for me?

Speaker 3 (11:37):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (11:37):
Sure, Yeah, slam dunk nice Winston.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
Boo dah, nailed it.

Speaker 1 (11:45):
Every little bit helps and maybe one day you'll grow
up to drive a big garbage truck yourself.

Speaker 4 (11:50):
Hey, yeah, that'd be fun. Do you really think I
have what it takes to be a garbage collector?

Speaker 3 (11:55):
Emily?

Speaker 1 (11:56):
Oh, I think it's safe to say you have it
in the bag. Hey, great shot, Thanks Winson. Let's clean
up this mess.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
All right, let's do it.

Speaker 1 (12:08):
Hey, thanks for listening and for coming along on this
ride with us. Next time you see your garbage collector
driving down the street, give them a big smile and
a wave for helping keep everything so nice and clean.
