Speaker 1 (00:00):
Magmill was a production of I Heart Radio and Bamford Productions.
Have a seat, let's chat here. Thank you, General Tompkins.
I appreciate you taking the time to talk to me privately.
What's on your mind? How are the AI vessel tests
coming along? Well, like you know already, our engineering crew
has been consulting with the physicists team to identify and
(00:23):
solve the specific challenges of actually entering a black hole,
and with the AI vessels we've been able to test
several of our theories. But the first challenge we faced
was finding a way to keep the mouth of a
black hole open long enough to travel through and vessels.
C forty was successful in achieving this to an extent,
(00:46):
but even after tracking the fluctuations over time, we ultimately
weren't able to reach speeds needed in order for the
device to succeed, and the vessel was crushed by the
pure density shiit. So you're telling me that even if
we can get a human controlled vessel to enter the
black hole, it will just be obliterated. No, well, yes,
(01:10):
to some extent maybe. Again, we are still working out
the science with this. If it is to succeed, it
will have to be traveling at a speed faster than light.
Achieving something like this is simply unprecedented, at least by
current technology standards. We are working on it, though, and
we're trying to find some solutions for that. But that's
(01:32):
not what I wanted to talk to you about. What
did you want to talk about? Then? One of the
AI ships we sent out there was able to gather
a substantial amount of information. While it wasn't entirely successful.
I retrieved the scans that were sent just before the
vessel was decimated, and and well, I wanted to discuss
(01:53):
this with you first, sir, before I shared it with
anyone else. What did the scans say, Captain? Well, it
found owned that there is something on the other side
of that wormhole. I'm not sure that we can really
know what, but we can verify with certainty that there
is something to be discovered, including a planet. Well, holy shit,
(02:14):
this is great news. Can we verified with the vessel
ended up? From what I was able to gather, it
looks like the area is impossibly far here. The data
may be skewed though, and we won't know until we
make another attempt. But if this is correct, that means
that a vessel can travel a substantial distance in an instant.
(02:38):
This is exactly what we've been working towards. Excellent work, soldier.
Thank you, Sir. I wasn't sure how to handle this,
so I didn't tell the team yet, but if you
are pleased, then I will make sure to talk to them.
Hang on a second, let's not tell the rest of
them yet, Sir. I appreciate you coming to me with
this first, but there is a reason a lot of
(02:58):
this is classified. We don't want leaking out to other
foreign agencies that we might be on the verge of
harnessing the power of a wormhole. We have to master
it first, make sure we have it down. But sir,
if we appreciate your enthusiasm on this, Captain, but you're
going to have to trust me on this. We don't
want something like this to get out and potentially embarrass
us if we fail or another organization sweeps it up
(03:19):
from under our feet. What about the magma, sir? What
about them? Do you plan on telling them about the
potential risks of this mission? Considering the data I collected,
it is to need to know basis, son, I think
this is better left in the dark. But sir, my wife,
do not make me repeat myself, Soldier. As far as
anyone else is concerned, Project Magma's mission is to be
(03:39):
the first to observe the Helix nebula up close and
personal and send back all relevant information. That alone is
an impressive feet in and of itself. And if it
happens to be random happenstance that the ship is present
when a fluctuation occurs, and said ship is successful in
traveling through said wormhole, then we have one of the
most powerful tools in the universe at our our fingertips,
(04:01):
and your wife will be a hero. Now, don't question
my orders and get back to work. And if it's
not successful, excuse me. If the ship is not successful
in surviving the ordeal, then what then we will have
learned a valuable lesson. Captain Prescott knew the risks when
she signed up for this mission. Mistakes are necessary in
(04:23):
order to make progress, and sometimes sacrifices are needed for
the greater good, even if they don't know that they
are making one. And I understood, Captain, I said, And
I understood, Captain Prescott. Yes, Sir, Good magml Episode nine,
(04:59):
Stepping over My Grave, Good morning, Magma crew. Today is March.
(05:28):
You are currently one hundred kilometers from the helix Nebula. Congratulations, ladies.
After seven hundred fifty four days, today is the day
your mission finally comes to fruition. Good morning, Magma crew.
Today is March. You are currently one hundred kilometers from
(05:50):
the helix Nebula. Congratulations, ladies, after seven hundred Good morning,
Magma Crew. Today is March. You are currently one d columns.
Good morning, Magma crew. Today is Marche. Good morning, Magma crew,
(06:25):
Good morning, Magma, good month. After seven hundred four days,
today today your final count through witness. It's going to
see hand our knowledge of the universe end. What's the
worst happened? Stop? How could you do this to me?
(06:47):
What's bring me? I don't know. Maybe it's overwhelming sense
of threat, stranding charting spain, how t s we've cut
a gout? You have? I remember, I remember everything. Oh,
(07:18):
good morning, Janna, I was just about to wake you.
Today is March. You are currently one hundred kilometers from
the helix Nembula. Congratulations. After seven hundred fifty four days,
today is the day your mission finally comes to fruition.
Are you all right? Yeah? Yes, I don't know. I
(07:42):
just had the most vivid fucking dream. See what the
funk is that? It seems we are experiencing another electrical storm.
Another You've got to be fucking kidding me, Sid Sid Sydney, Jesus,
Janna here the hell out of me? Is the fire?
Why didn't you answer me? I'm making breakfast? What's going on?
(08:04):
You don't feel that? But the electrical storm it's been
happening all morning. Why didn't you wake me? Because it's
not a big deal, Sydney. It is a big deal.
It's nothing I can't handle, but it's my job and
if anything went wrong, I should be there. Yes, I know.
I feel like we've had this conversation before. Yeah, well
we have, and you should remember it. Then seven seven seven?
(08:25):
What you've asked? How many times we've been through this
this past week? We've had seven? I didn't ask that.
He didn't know. Well, I mean I was going to,
but I didn't say it out loud yet. It's strange.
Stop freaking me out, Sydney. Sorry, I don't want to,
but I just I feel weird. Weird how just a
(08:50):
feeling like I'm in a dream or someone is stepping
over your grave. Um, we just need to eat. It's
all right, today's a big deal and we'll feel better after. Yeah, yeah,
let's eat. Magmal will returned after these messages and now
(09:28):
back to mag Mill. I know it's just hard, especially
when it's just you and one other person on the ship.
You always have me as well. I know, thank you?
(09:51):
Just what just I just can't better do this fast
before she's done with her session. T access sea class
level parameters, access code FI three beta to C access granted.
Can you cross check some of the data with the
electrical storms? Query? Too broad? Please redefde How do I
put this? Um? Would the electrical storms have any effect
(10:14):
positive or negative on the way the human body works?
Insufficient data, no readings relating to your query? Is there
any data on the anomaly affecting the human body or
the electrical storms? Insufficient data, no readings relating to your query?
Damn it? T Why do I get the feeling that
(10:35):
something is really really off? What's really off? Just don't
do that to me? Sorry, sorry, consider a payback for
earlier anyway. What's off? Something wrong? What? No, no, no, no,
I was just trying to check the sensors while you
were in there making sure everything was good. I hope
I didn't distract t too much from your session. I
am capable of multitasking up to eight complex tasks at once,
(10:57):
Thank you very much. Okay, wise as serious? Are you? Okay? Yeah,
I'm fine. I just, you know, like you said earlier,
I just um, I feel a little off, you know,
nerves and all. You know, our names are about to
be in the history books for this, one said in
Janna Intrepid Space Explorers. Hey, are you even paying attention
(11:20):
to me? Are you okay? Yeah, I'm good, it's still good.
Just the nerves. Didn't didn we have this conversation earlier?
Did we? I don't remember. Yeah we did. But sorry,
what were you saying? I said, Sid and Janna history books?
(11:42):
Oh wait, no, you're right, I mean Janna and said
your name comes first. You said right. I didn't say that,
Yes you did? When just now I heard you. No,
I didn't. I didn't say anything. Are you sure positive?
(12:03):
What the fund is going on here? What do you mean?
Just this isn't right? You feel it too? Two kilometers
until destination? Yeah, I feel it like something is seriously
off and we're like reading each other's thoughts and finishing
each other's sentences, and I'm not sure what the hell
is going on? T Is everything okay? All readings look normal,
(12:24):
but your heart rate is elevated? Are you okay? No? No, no, no,
Something is wrong here. I know I usually give you
ship for this, but you just said you can feel
it too, right? Best? This is It's not right? But
what is it? I don't know. One kilometer until destination,
all systems engaged. I don't like this. What can we do?
I don't know? Passing into helix nebula in three two? No? No, funk?
(12:48):
This this engage? Janna? What the funk are you doing?
We can't do this, Janna said, we can't. This feels
wrong and I have this feeling like something seriously fucked
up is going to happen. I can't just sit here
and pretend like everything is okay when my guys telling
me that this is super fucked warning system failure? What
is that? What the fuck? What is happening in conclusive
data systems? What the hell is failing? What happened? Emergency positions? Funk? Okay,
(13:15):
buckle up, just do it. Sit I don't feel comfortable
with this. Well, we didn't have a choice. I need
to get that Quartona valve otherwise we are fed. That
doesn't mean I have to like it, especially after everything
that's happened. And we like it or not, we're here.
We have to deal with it. But he didn't you
(13:35):
say you with something urgent at I did, and she is.
I am, but you're right. I can't take this feeling
like something is really off. I know we established that already,
but we need this part so we can get the
fun back home. And these scans, I just I don't
(13:56):
understand them. They're like Greek to me. What is it?
I don't know. It's just pages and pages of these
random strings of Oh, oh my god, this is this
is unlike anything I've ever seen before. You need to
(14:16):
get back here right now. No, No, you don't understand.
You don't understand. If I don't, what the fun was that? Janna? Hello,
is someone there? Please come back at the end of
(14:36):
Please be careful, Joanna, I'm going to look. Just give
me a second. Oh, magmaal were returned after these messages,
(15:06):
and now back to mag Mill. Today is March. This
is Jenna, Session number six one seven. Hello, Janna, How
(15:27):
are you today? Dude? We were seriously just talking in
the other room. Do we really need to start each
session with that? You know what my programming dictates, it's
better to start fresh with each of these to get
a clearer head so you can talk freely. I always
talk freely. I don't just mean with your language. You
know what I'm referring to. So let us begin again. Hello, Janna,
(15:49):
how are you today? I'm just fucking peachy, proteus. How
are you? I'm glad to hear it. How are you
holding up with everything going on? Are you fucking serious? Yes?
I am read the goddamn room tea. How do you
think I'm holding up? I take it not well? Well, gee,
I don't know. Sidney tells me she found something on
the readings that indicated a severe gravitational poll and that
(16:11):
it reminds her of string theory and that could have
cost all this. Meanwhile, I'm sitting here with the knowledge
that my own fucking husband, nope, my ex fucking husband
knew that command was sending us on this fucking mission
with ulterior motives. And then, to top it all off,
I feel like I'm losing my fucking mind because of
what I saw in that fucking ship. I am happy
to explore those topics with you, and I think it
(16:33):
is relevant we try to do that. Perhaps if we
tackle one at a time, that would be best. Let's
start with what you said about Sidney. Jesus Christ right
to even start with there. Like, I know, we only
have each other up here, but with everything that's going on,
I don't even know if she will stop and actually
listen to me. I can't even talk to her about
what happened over there because she's gonna think I'm fucking
crazy overwhere on that fucking ship. Did something happen while
(16:55):
you were over there while the comms went out? Are
you kidding me? Of course, something fucking happened when I
was there. You think those scans that I can barely
make heads or tails up would make me feel like this?
That's nothing compared to what I saw over there. Your
heart rate is elevated again, Janna, Do you need something
to help you? It's elevated, proteus, It's elevated because I
fucking saw him. I saw who I saw Kevin. You
(17:19):
saw Captain Prescott on the ship. Don't fucking patronize me,
t I know that tone of voice. I saw him.
I swear to God, I saw him. He was there,
and he talked to me. And and I know this
sounds nuts, but I'm remembering stuff, stuff that hasn't even
happened yet, like things when I came back, and about
(17:40):
that fucking mold. And how do you think seeing him
is an unconscious projection of your guilt about the divorce?
Are you even listening to me? I'm merely trying to
help you get to the bottom of these vision Jesus Christ.
You think I'm fucking delusional, don't you know? Jenna? I
think that you were experiencing some kind of break and
we need to address that. Fuck you engage, computer mode,
(18:01):
computer mode, engage. I gotta talk to Sydney. We're done. Hey, Janna,
you gotta take a look at this data between this
idol you found and the weird scans. I really think
that we need to start thinking about this from another
to talk to Yes, we do. Oh so now we
(18:25):
need to talk after how many weeks of trying to
talk about it? You think now is a good time
to talk about that night? What God forbid to lonely
people have one moment of weakness and share something special together.
You know, I'm so sick of you not trusting me
with things. I'm an adult with a PhD. And you
(18:48):
can't just go in here. Stop. It's not about that, okay,
It's about everything else. Something is really wrong. Of course
something is wrong. Everything is wrong here. There is more
something I haven't told you, something that that may help.
The piece has fall into place. What do you mean
something you haven't told me? How is that even possible?
We've been on the ship for two years together, but
(19:10):
there is something I kept from you. Something Kevin told me.
What Look, this is fucked, so don't get mad. Okay,
what are you trying to say? Right before we left,
Kevin told me that what the fund is that warning
electrical store detected? What is going on? What the hell
is that you can hear that too? Right? Why are
(19:31):
there so many of them? How is this even possible?
Is that it has to be saying everything we're saying, Yeah,
before we even sucking say fucking hurt? Cover your ears?
The fuck just happened to? Electrical storm has passed? That
(19:54):
wasn't a normal electrical storm, and no ship that was us, Jenna,
almost like the other us. Is what the funk is
happening to us. Look, I know this is scary. Okay,
I'm fucking terrified too, But whatever that just was, I
think we can fix it. Okay, so it doesn't happen again,
But you have to listen to me. Okay, okay, okay.
(20:19):
Right before we left, Kevin told me about Project magml As.
If you didn't know, no, said no, I mean the
real Project Magmal, not the bullshit they fed us to
get us out here, but what they really were looking for.
What do you mean? He told me that right from
the very start, they were tracking an anomaly in the nebulas,
something they thought was a micro black hole. What not
(20:41):
only was it a micro black hole, but also one
that expanded and contracts that most of the time it
was so small no one would even know it was there.
So they sent us out here to collect data not
just from the nebula, but also to collect data on
the anomaly. And he assured me that we would be safe,
that there was such a small chance of the black
hole expanding while we were here, it wasn't even worth
(21:01):
worrying about. But now with all of this, with the
fucking black hole and the bullshit and the de jafun.
Whatever the funk that was with the storms, I just
I don't fucking know. I mean, it's got to be connected,
it just has to be. And you fucking kept this
from me, missing the fucking point, he said. I'm sorry.
I know it was sucked up and I should have
told you much sooner. But be angry at me later. Okay,
we need to think about how the fund to get
out of this. But you you knew this the whole time,
(21:24):
and you didn't think it would be important to tell
me until just fucking Christy, we were in some serious
ship here. Okay. I think I'm losing my fucking mind
because I swear to God, I feel like I'm remembering
things that haven't happened yet. And then I fucking saw
I fucking saw Kevin on that goddamn ship, And now
I don't know what the funk is going on. You
you saw Kevin. I know it sounds crazy. I know
(21:46):
none of this makes sense, but I can't help but
feel like I saw Caitlin you what, well, more like
I heard her, but it was like she was right there.
When when when you were on the ship, when the
coms cut off? I I swear to you. I thought
I could hear her on the radio, and then I
(22:08):
thought I saw her earlier when you were in the session.
And this is what I'm talking about. This is some
serious ship and I don't know what to make of
it anymore. And I'm remembering things too, like like the
Nebula and this idol and oh no, what what's wrong? Now?
The black hole? I think I remember what happens to
(22:30):
us with it, but we we need to get away
from it, far far away, like as far as we
possibly can. Staring me Sydney. Why because of those scans,
I think I remember why they didn't sit right with
me now. They reminded me of a naked singularity, like
a black hole without an event horizon, and and that
that is what I think is out there. That is
(22:51):
what I think we flew through when we went through
the Nebula. And if we don't get away from it now,
then who the hell knows what is going to happen?
Ship Shop, where do you want to go? We're in
the middle of nowhere, said, we have to be smart
about this. We have to figure out why this is
happening and what we can do to try to stop it.
I don't know, Danna. I mean, I don't have any
(23:12):
answers here. The situation is kind of unprecedented. Ship, What
do you think we should do? Sorry to interrupt, but
I discovered something in this ship's log that I think
you should both be aware of. What is it this
idol you retrieved from the other ship? I have found
where it originated from? You, I mean, like a location. Yes,
it appears to be from a planet approximately two thousand
(23:34):
nine kilometers away. That's not too much further away from
the black hole. Well, is there anything else anything to
help us figure out this weird space time ship? We're
going to the planet. Wait, what the planet? We're going there? Now?
Where are you are your fucking mind, Janna? You don't
understand we have to get away from the black hole
in these electrical storms or this stuff is just going
to keep happening and getting worse because the last time.
(23:56):
You don't understand last time? What last time? We died? Janna?
We died. Don't you get it. We're remembering things not
because of some freak electrical storm or space anomaly. We're
remembering things because it all happened. We died again and
again and again. But I don't. I don't want to
(24:17):
do it anymore. I can't. I'm I'm so sick of dying.
I'm so sick of starting over. I can't do it anymore.
What are you saying? We're stuck, Jenna. We're stuck in
a loop, but I think I know how to stop it.
