Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome into NBA Pulsar production of I Heart Radio and
the NBA. I'm Saracu Stock, NBA analysts for the y
S Network, and today is Wednesday, February, and we got
a fun show on our way from our incredible core
group of NBA journalists. We are joined by NBA dot
Com senior writer Steve Ashburner, and we got a special guest,

(00:22):
Ryan Hollins. The resume is long of things to introduce
you as you of course played the NBA for ten years. Um.
We have a new podcast on iHeart called NBA Rookie Life,
and you're also the game analyst for the Houston Rockets,
and you're you're one of the coolest, most fun people

(00:43):
that I know. Uh, funny fun. So we're we're expecting
all the energy for you to bring it here today
the Private Pasadena a Ryan. Oh see see there's more,
there's more. Go back to those Minnesota days. Come on, man,
the Ryan Allans. That's right when you were when you're
in Minnesota, and that was one of your best seasons

(01:04):
in the NBA except for team success, but individually in
terms of your participation and impact. Yeah, I was still
up in up in the Twin Cities then, so you
don't remember me, but I remember you. Yeah, yeah, Actually
doesn't bode well when you know the offense run ran
through me and Al Jefferson and we won fourteen games.
You know they didn't you know, like Mike call to say, hey, man,

(01:27):
featured me some more. That didn't work out too well. Man.
You know what, two of the best people. That's okay.
That's okay. And yeah and Ryan we even kicked a
little in the CBS CBS studios talking college hoops. But
let's let's get um your obviously very entrenched with with
rookies this season with your new podcast um in Ashes

(01:48):
as well with his Rookie Ladder, which as a little
bit of movement. We haven't had a ton throughout the
course of this season, but a little bit of movement.
Paulo ben Carro still remains in that number one spot,
Benedict Mathron at number two, Jalen Williams at number three,
Walker Kessler at number four, but Jalen Durhan of Detroit
jumps up to that number five spots. Uh, who has

(02:11):
impressed you with this group as of late, and more
than anything, what's changed with Jalen Durhan that that has
got him pumped up to the number, to the top five. Yeah,
this week's edition, I guess it is the Ryan Hollands
uh tribute because these guys are fighting for position in
the middle. So, um, we've got Jalen During with Detroit

(02:31):
and UM you know this, this young guy, he's been
a sponge for the Pistons as his opportunities have increased. Um,
so has his impact, so has his learning reporter all
the way from Corey Joseph hits the back iron, the
offensive part for during the path clear. He became the
second youngest player in India history to post the thirty

(02:54):
point fifteen plus rebound game uh the other night. And
whenever you say second youngest, third youngest, you know who's
probably at the top of the list. It was Lebron
James who had done that. So in a pretty big
week for Lebron James. Who was Jalen During, you know,
hitching his wagon in his own little way to uh
to that level of greatness at least as a young guy.
He's he's nineteen. He's gonna be nineteen, you know, for

(03:17):
the for the rest of the season and into next season.
And um uh he's still got, you know, to fill
out some physically. He'll he'll get stronger, but um, his
his nose uh for offensive rebounds particularly um you know
makes him notable steps away from KB D Joe during
the offensive board during goes back up block second after

(03:40):
Chermen during. We're getting ready for All Star weekend, Jordan
Rising Stars game is going to take place in Salt
Lake City. Last week on February seventh day, had a
draft and so there's honorary coaches Pau Gasol, Darren Williams,
Joachim Noah, and then Jason Terry will coach the m
D Standout Stars from the NBA G League. How are

(04:00):
they working at this season with the way that these
games are going to be played, including these G League players.
Sure for the second year now this will be a
mini tournament. You've got four squads. I mean, I remember
the days when this was rookies against sophomores, which would
be a pretty intriguing game this year when you look
at those two rookie classes, but what they have is

(04:22):
four squads. Three of them are drawn from or drafted
from rookies and second year players, and then the fourth
squad is a group of G leaguers and Jason Terry
is the is the coach of that group, and um,
you know that's an opportunity for the league to you know,
to showcase the G League. Of course Scot Henderson, Scott

(04:46):
Henderson right at this All Star weekend for for a competition.
But Scott Henderson absolutely and you know, um it's intriguing.
A lot of scouts will have their eyes on him
by how he does against these young NBA arrivals. Um.
And then these two these teams, you know, they played
two games the semifinals right off the bat. They they

(05:10):
are it's all according to total points, you know, so
you're not playing against the clock. The game will end
on a scoring play each of these games, and they
play to forty points in the preliminaries and then the
final games since they play at the same night, that's
the points. So first team to forty advances to the

(05:32):
Rising Stars Final, and then first team to in that
game wins this this tournament, I've gone on record of
as picking Team Pow as a runaway winner based on
the draft of talent on his squad. In fact, I
would suggests should be a writing candidate for executive of

(05:53):
the year based on this weekend's uh work right? Right?
What about you a game like this? I also think
it's fun these individuals get to be at a weekend
with NBA All Stars, uh, the best in the league.
Just the type of exposure, UM, interactions, connections. We know
a lot of that comes with just becoming a pro

(06:13):
in the league. Who you get to meet, who you
get to talk to, whose you know, brain you get
to pick in these circumstances. When you look at this game,
what what is exciting about you that that you keep
an eye out for? Well, for one, for what you
just said, um, And a lot of these guys aren't
getting national games, national exposure. They're not getting a chance
to see what the NBA like really looks like. I

(06:36):
remember when I was I went from Charlotte to Dallas
and I played in my first nationally televised game and nobody,
I swear that you guys, Nobody told me like, Hey,
there's gonna be like different cameras there. They're gonna be
center chord. You're just gonna be media across the side
like I've never seen. I'm like, what the heck is this?
So as a gamer, you get to see what the

(06:58):
real NBA looks like. I remember when Jalen came back
from playing in The Rise and Starts Challenged last year,
he was just glowing. He was just glowing. He kind
of you know, some guys go in and kind of
fit around. Jalen was a guy that went in embraced
the off star weekend and it was like kind of like,
I need to be like those guys. And I think
that we're gonna see Catapult rejuvenate a couple of these

(07:19):
rookies um into the rest of the season and for
them to kind of like see what the NBA culture
is about. They've been welcomed into the grind of the
NBA and it's it's starting to get that that that tough,
ugly time of season. But I think they're gonna get
as a whole that like, hey, this is what an
All Star looks like. This is what Lebron looks like,
This is what k D looks like. This is hey man,

(07:41):
wal that's Adam Silver to my left. You know, like
they're gonna start to see these things and I feel like, um,
it's fun to watch. And I think you guys, we
we joked about this before the show that that, um,
that G League team, they're gonna be going like, They're
not gonna be going showtime, throwing lives. They're gonna be
trying to win, right like. And if your school, this

(08:03):
is intriguing. This is like the celebrity All Star have
fun game for some of the guys. Scoot Henderson's playing
for a draft position, as you said, Ash, like that's
a big thing, Like how do you prep for that?
So I'm kind of excited to see if he you know, runs,
you know, rubs some guys the wrong way, gets into
some guy's faces, you know. And I'm sorry, man, Sarah,

(08:24):
I'm all here, and I'm all for the smoke. Man,
I'm That's why I wanted who's gonna show out? Who
do you think? I mean, I know you said it
with Scooting this league, but who do you expect to
show out in this Honestly a guy that I think
is set up and I kind of skipped over him. Um,
Benedick Matherin, dude smashed it. I was kind of big

(08:47):
on him in Arizona before the draft. Um. I thought
that his skill set would translate over. I thought he'd
be able to get downhill big time. Athlete. He's shooting
the ball so much better that I thought he'd be
able to shoot it. He's got a great frame, and
I think he's another guy that's really ahead of schedule.

(09:09):
Um that that is, um, you know, surprising in the mix.
So I think he could be kind of a you know,
if he comes in with the right in the right headspace,
maybe an m v P of this tournament, because man,
it is tough to guard him. Man, once he gets
going and gets gets downhill. All right, we're gonna take
a quick break. On the other side, we're gonna get
to the Don't Contest. We're gonna need your your choices

(09:32):
for winners from Ryan and Ash Don't go Anywhere. Welcome
back to NBA Pulse, sarahcu Stock joined by NBA dot
Com senior writer Steve Ashburner and ten year NBA vet
Houston Rockets game analyst and the host of the new

(09:53):
I Heart podcast NBA Rookie Life, Ryan Hollands. Thrilled to
have him along with us. All right, so we're we're
getting that up for the NBA Dunk Contest. UH. At
All Star Weekend, they announced UH the candidates that are
going to take part in all Speaking of young players, Um,
all four are twenty four years or younger. You have

(10:15):
someone that Ryan, you're really familiar with, Rockets Kenyan Martin Jr.
You have now newly signed seventies sixers Guard mc mcclong, uh,
Pelicans Trey Murphy and the Nicks Jericho Sims. Ryan, I'm
gonna start with you. Who's winning? Who you? Who? You?
I didn't take off your your your bias cap of

(10:37):
the Houston Rockets, though you can still choose kJ However,
what what do you think about this lineup in in
what these guys can can do? Okay? Um, I'm excited
because I feel like the league although we don't get
John Moran, I think I think he'd be great in it.
They're not just going with the name. And sometimes there's

(10:58):
those guys that are shelled time dunkers that never like
I remember when I played James White, didn't get a chance.
And James White, as you remember this, he was going
through the free throw line, you know, and it just
freaking places from the freethow like, well we just dunk
from the freethrow line. James is like, now I'm a
windmill from the free throw line. He was one of
those guys. We got to see him later on in

(11:19):
the dunk contest, But I think the league has trended
towards like, let's just have a good show. And um,
I think honestly, even with the Homer head off, I
like kJ Martin. I like kJ in the sense that
he plays three four for US, but he's all at
six five six six, the kJ mark. So sometimes people

(11:44):
don't like the super high the seven foot or that dunk.
So the six ten guy, he's kind of got guard size.
He doesn't have this huge, super huge wingspan. He's got
one the like the He's one of the freakiest athletes
I've ever seen when you pair. If you ask anybody

(12:05):
in the Houston organization Washing Rockets, and you say, you
know Jalen Green, we knows he box office. Who's more athletic?
kJ and Jalen? You got to toss you go to
It's a it's a literal toss up. UM. I like
mc McClung. I don't think he has Kj's bounce, but
he's gonna have some tricks he has like the little
you know, Windmills scoop underhand dunk. That's his that's his deal.

(12:26):
Jericho Simpson one of the highest jumping players as you
noticed that we've ever seen. But I gotta see if
he has some tricks. I think Jericho comes out and
just jumps his head and shoulders above the room and
we kind of freak out a little bit. But he's
gotta show me he's got some sauce. I also heard
a little. Bertie told me kJ Martin had been working
with the really exclusive dunk coach. I'll throw that out,

(12:48):
although let it be drop. When he drops and I
think he's gonna have some fire, I'm gonna throw him out.
I mean, I mean, you find out there a chuck
he's been behind the last Like, because I was talking
about d C, I thought I was going to I was.
I thought we were talking about Vince Carter. I didn't
I didn't know if I didn't know, if you VC
was working with them. Okay, so this is what's crazy
about VC ash. I played with Vince in in you know, Memphis.

(13:13):
A lot of people don't know the reason I wore
fifteen was for Vince Carter. Okay, so one day I'm
asking Vance. I'm like, Vince, I gotta ask you, bro,
like you're here, like for one, I'm on the team
Vince Carter, right dream, I'm like, Vince, how did the
dunk contest go? For you? Like? How did you win?
And heels like Ryan, I never made any of those
dunks prior to the dunk contests. I literally went in

(13:34):
there and had no idea what I was gonna do.
I winged it and it just happened to work out
the way it did. Ryan, you need to listen to
our NBA flashback podcast of Vince talking about the dunk
contest because it had to be a two parter. We

(13:57):
went two hours where he walked. Okay, so you haven't right,
was we? Yeah, thank you for sending our listeners. Well,
want to put it back out on the line. Okay, yeah, yes,
go back to that pot if he describes the story
he told me. I couldn't believe as who you got?
Who you got? Well, I mean, first I want to
I want to ask Ryan, Um, when I covered you

(14:17):
in Minnesota, you were wearing number one for the Timberwolves.
Did Vince Carter asked you to stop wearing? No? You
know what I think? Somebody I can I cad, No, no,
somebody else, honestly, no, No, that's my first choice, I
asked you, right, You're right, all right? UM, well, you
know I mention this, Um, you know, historically, UM, it's

(14:38):
tough for the big guys to win. I mean there've
been guys. I mean, I first dunk contest I ever
paid attention to or noticed was back in the nineteen seventies.
Six already Gilmore was in the A B A Dunk contest.
That's the one where Dr J went off famously from
the fall line and set that as a as a
marker for future dunkers. Not that everyone really Joey's irvy,

(15:07):
you know, when you get that, when you get the
really big guys, Um, it's difficult, whether it's Dwight Howard,
Artist Gilmore, any of these others. Um. So, while Jericho
sims to me, has the explosiveness, he would have to
do something when he's up that high, he would have
to you know, hit that ball off the glass of
time or two, or have a second ball with him,

(15:28):
or jump over the mascot or you know something like that.
So I just it's not as impressive the little guys.
I mean, in that case, you know mc McClung at
six too, you know, has a head start in essence,
because it looks more spectacular when you're off the floor
that high. But I think, um yeah, Kenyan Martin Jr.

(15:49):
He's sort of that sweet spot because he's he's not
a you know, a big by NBA standards, but he's
big enough and he's got the you know, the explosiveness,
the leaping ability. I could see that as um as
the guy to come out in front of me, you know,
Trey Murphy. Not to neglect him, but he's he's six
nine as well, so he would have to have some

(16:11):
some moves in addition to the uh um, you know
the vertical. So um yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna take
Martin um as well to win this thing. Ash, you
will be there to see it live in person. Ryan
and I will be watching on TV from undisclosed potentially
warm locations, and uh we we look forward to look

(16:31):
forward to all your stuff. Read Ash on NBA dot com,
Go listen to Ryan on NBA Rookie Life, and appreciate
your guys time, Thanks for being here. NBA Pulse with
