Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome into NBA Pulsar production of I Heart Radio in
the NBA. I'm Saracustack, NBA analysts for the y S Network,
and today is Thursday, February six. From our incredible core
group of NBA journalists, we are joined by NBA dot
Com senior writer John Shuman and John All Star Weekend
is upon us. Uh In. One of the favorite things

(00:23):
I get to read and dig into is your All
Star notebook. You've got key stats on every one of
the three All Stars. So you see some of these
standout numbers, interesting fascinating ones that I have been taking
a look at and intrigued by of all twenty seven
players and individuals. Um, So let's start with Let's start

(00:44):
with some of the bigger names. Uh did Luka don
Chech for example? Some of these numbers, and some of
them are best numbers in history, historic things, uh handful
that we're getting to look at. Only a few have done.
But Luka done is leading the league in scoring. Um,
he's got four fifty point games. But what are what
are some other numbers that have jumped out to you
about what he's doing and how he's doing it? Well,

(01:08):
I mean the leading the league and scoring at thirty
three point three points per game, which is one of
the highest scoring averages we've ever seen basically since Will
Chamberlain UM. But obviously he's doing a lot more than that,
averaging eight point eight rebounds eight point one assists. So
that is only the fourth different player in NBA history

(01:28):
to average at least thirty eight and eight UM, joining
Oscar Robertson who did it four times, Russell Westbrook who
did it once in one of his triple double seasons
average thirty one point six points per games in one
of his triple double season, and Michael Jordan's who did
it in nineteen eighty nine average thirty two point five

(01:49):
eight and eight right on the nose. So it's pretty amazing.
Like only four players in NBA history have ever done
average average thirty eight and eight. Luca don just is
joining that group at the right age of what is

(02:22):
it twenty three, I think it is. At this point,
it sounds about right young, very young. We we'll keep
it at that. Wow, a lot of unprecedented things we're seeing.
Also fun to watch how he's starting acclimate with Kyrie Irving,
his new teammate in Dallas speaking of a few unprecedented things,
or maybe a player archetype and one who's racking up

(02:43):
triple doubles. NICOLEA. Yokich. What about Yokich? Um, we know
his numbers have been eye popping and off the charts.
But um, but what are some intriguing parts of these
numbers that you've been able to pick apart? Well, Yokich
is a little bit more simple. He's averaging a triple double. Um.
You know he's put up huge numbers in the past,
but his ten point one assists per game or a

(03:06):
career high four point seven points, eleven point five rebounds. Um.
We sort of know the history of guys averaging a
triple double. That's Oscar Robertson who did it once, and
Russell Westbrook who did it four times. Um, So that
is you know the I mean, we've we've talked about

(03:29):
Yoki as an m v P UM the last two years,
and his scoring is down a little bit, you know,
Jamal Murray back, Michael Porter Jr. Back, Um. But almost
everything else he's doing, he's doing it better. And the
Nuggets are are in first place in the West West
by a fairly comfortable margin right now. So um, it's

(03:51):
hard not to think that this guy isn't the m
v P again because of one the box score numbers, UM.
Two the on floor impact, Like he's got the biggest
on off differential in the league as far as how
good the Nuggets are when he's on the floor versus
how good they are, um, where he's when he when
he's off the floor. And then two and then three,

(04:13):
it's efficiency. He's the most efficient scorer in the NBA
as well. So it's it's it's it's a three pronged thing.
It was for me last year when I voted him
for m v P, it was a three pong argument. Um,
you know, the basic stats, the on off differential and
the efficiency, and then he's coming back and basically doing

(04:33):
it even better than he did it. Uh last season.
Yo backs up. Yeah, And another thing that you haven't
here in your notebook with yo Ki is about his
true shooting percentage. Uh, that's the efficiency part of it, right,

(04:56):
So can can you describe that? Because I want to
get into the that with Kevin Durant and what he's
doing averaging more than twenty eight points per game, right,
So true shooting percentage, So Basically we have M's terms
by the way and saying efficiency. But but I know
that that term true shooting percentage get tossed around quite
a bit, and you, of all people, are one that

(05:18):
can break it down, all right, So right, basically, we
have regular field goal percentage, which is made field goals
divided by attempted field goals. You're two for four, you're shooting.
Affective field goal percentage is the sort of the next step,
which is still just looking at your shots from the
field if you're but you're taking into account the extra

(05:38):
value of a three. So if you're two for four,
if and all all your shots were three pointers, um,
your affective field goal percentage is seventy because you got
um six points out of a possible sort of eight
if if to to to put it, and I guess

(05:59):
that's in a weird way, but six points out of
four shots divided by two your affective field goal percentage
shoes shooting percentage wants it takes efficiency into account, so
it takes free throws into account. So basically it's looking
at how many points do you score per shooting opportunity

(06:19):
I'll say, which is a field goal, attempt or trip
to the free throw line. So basically it's taking your
points and it's dividing by your field goal attempts plus
your trips to the line. Now, if you do that,
you're getting a number that's like one point four for
Nicola Yogi um. So what they did when the person

(06:39):
who invented true shooting PERCENTE was they took that number
and then they divided by two, so it looks more
like a field goal percentage type number. So, for instance,
Yogi is averaging about one point four points per shooting opportunity,
field goal attempt or trip to the line translates to
a shoes shoot percentage of seventy point three, which in

(07:04):
the history of the n b A would be the
highest mark for anybody averaging at least twenty points per game.
And I'll say this, in the history of the n
b A, I looked at basically anybody who averaged twenty
points per game in at least twenty five games in
any season. So there are one thousand, five hundred and
twenty one instances of a player averaging at least twenty

(07:25):
points per game, and he has the highest shooting shoo
shooting percentage UH for any player who's ever done that.
Sev it tops a mark. The highest prior to that
was a Stephan Curry mark in two thousand, seventeen eighteen
of sixty seven point five percent. So he's actually like
better than that by a pretty healthy margin. Um, and

(07:47):
that's that leads us to Durant. So Durant, uh no,
Yoki is averaging twenty four and a half I think
points per game. Durant is averaging more than Durant and
doing it super efficiently as well. Durant has the highest
shooting shot shooting percentage in NBA history for a player
averaging at least twenty eight points per game. And that's

(08:07):
a hundred and sixty five instances of a player averaging
twenty or more in a season. So the two of
them are just scoring obviously really well, but doing it
and at a historic level in regards to how efficiently
they do it. Um. Durant, obviously we know is is
just a mid range master. He has the highest mid

(08:29):
range field goal percentage in the in the twenty seven
years for which we have shot location data. Durant gets
the space. Yoki most you know, does most of his
stuff in the paint. He's shooting fewer threes this season,
but also gets the line the free throw line of
Ton and shoots very well the free throw line as well. UM.
So they're both just basically the two best shooters in

(08:51):
the league. We have the two most efficient scores in
the league. UM. And it's when you look at it
on a historic level, it's it's pretty remarkable. Now the
the the I'll say this, like the fact that we
that players are shooting more threes these days makes them
more efficient. UM. But interestingly, if you go back a
little bit, like one of the highest marks prior to

(09:14):
these both of these guys in both cases was Charles Barkley.
He had a sho shooting percentage of sixty six point
five percent on at least twenty eight points per game,
So he was in both categories. So there's been other
guys that have scored really efficiently, you know, prior to
the sort of the three point the when the three
point explosion, I would say, yeah, it's incredible to think about,

(09:37):
it's been so much fun to watch. UM. But someone
who is doing historic things and joining an elite class
with the numbers he's putting up that is not shooting
three pointers. UM. Or not at a at a high
volume at all, is honest? That coompo with what he's
doing this season, what's been special about some of the
numbers he's been putting together, averaging thirty points, at least

(09:59):
thirty points, twelve rebounds and five assists per game. Yeah,
the twelve rebounds is the thing that sort of stands
out versus like a Westbrook season or even yokich Is season.
So UM, only four other players in NBA history of
average thirty twelve and at least five assists Kareem Abdul Jabbar,
Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, and Oscar Robertson, So honest, would

(10:24):
be the first average at least thirty twelve and five
in the last fifty years, which um puts him in
special company as well. And and you know, obviously the
other two guys we talked about, UM, you know, Westbrook
has done it, whereas Westbrook never averaged twelve rebounds. So
the thirty twelve and five is pretty remarkable. Who his

(10:52):
points per thirty six minutes, you know, he's one of
these guys that will have thirty points in twenty eight
minutes or thirty five points in thirty minutes, So he's
average thirty four point eight per thirty six. That is
the third highest mark in the last sixty years UH,
topped only by James Harden uh in eighteen nineteen and
his own mark UH three seasons ago. So keep those

(11:15):
three because this looks right here from youngest is the
hy he stopped the guy. There's just you can't There's
nothing you can do to stop him in the open
floor playing down hill. He's he's a per minute monster,
and obviously with the rebounding, he's sort of a little
bit different than these other guys. UH. The last thing
before we take a quick break is another individual joining

(11:39):
elite company, UH Demonus Sabonis. Sex was fun, This one
I was he is uh sa Bonus is averaging eighteen points,
twelve rebounds, and six assists. He's averaging more than that
his assist or a career high six point nine. He's

(12:00):
leads the league with forty five double doubles, so he's
averaging more than eighteen, twelve and six, which think about
how impressed we'd be with his passing is a big
if not for Kich but exactly exactly. Um. The rebounds, Yeah,
the twelve rebounds obviously stands out, and then the six
assists puts him above Antokumpo, and but he has done

(12:22):
this before, so he did this. He averaged more than
eighteen twelve and six two seasons ago one, his last
full season with the Pacers. There are only to three,
four or five six players in NBA history have done it.
Sabonis um Yokich has done it, Oscar Robertson, Kevin Garnett,

(12:45):
and Wilt Chamberlain, but the only players to average eighteen
twelve and six in multiple seasons they each did it twice,
or Sabonis would be doing it twice this year, Wilt
Chamberlain and Demonus Sabonis, which is freaky crazy. I will
say that like his numbers are a little bit pace
aided right the pace the King's lead the league in pace,

(13:08):
but still pretty wild that he is sort of a
beast inside, scoring efficiently, beast on the glass, but also
you know the full crumb of the King's offense, and
uh so he's he's very much a little bit like
a Yo Kis, with a little bit more rebounding, a

(13:30):
little bit less scoring, a little bit less assists, but
they're the same sort of type of player right, a
center who's the fulcrum of their team's offense. Bam auto
bio is a little bit like that in the East
to another All Star. So um, it's kind of fun
when you dig it. I I sort of stumbled across
that one. I was like, oh, how many times you know?

(13:50):
And to only come up with you know, six players
and only have one other guy havn't have done it
multiple times is pretty amazing. Anytime you joined Wilt in something,
it is special. The third place Sacramento Kings Sabonis a
big part of that. We're gonna take a quick break
because we count down to the All Star Game. We
got some more numbers that will surprise you after this.

(14:18):
Welcome back to NBA Pulse Saracusta joined by John Schuman
and Shoe All Star Weekend is here. We're getting set
with your All Star notebook. A lot of fun stats
on every one of these All Stars. So we went
through some of the bigger names. What are your favorites
that that have intrigued you? Jumped out to you. A
few few left here, Uh to bring to the attention

(14:41):
of some of our listeners. All right, how about uh
Shay Gil just Alexander leading the league and drives by
the way for the third straight season. UM. But what
he's doing with at the free throw line is um
pretty historic. He leads the league until free throws made six,

(15:02):
but he would be just the second player in NBA
history to shoot nine or better on at least ten
free throws attempts per game, joining Kevin Durant who did
it with the Thunder in two thousand nine two. So
that's that's pretty amazing that he is getting to line
more than ten times a game and shooting better than UM.

(15:24):
It's a big reason why he's UM an All Star,
why he's one of the leading league's leading scores, why
he uh, he's making those Clippers not look so good
for further Paul George straight, of course, if the Clippers
win a championship, then all us for all is forgiven,
I guess. But the fact that the Thunder got him

(15:44):
in that trade, UM, and he is turning into you know,
one of the best players in the league is pretty amazing. Yeah. Absolutely, Uh,
Julius Randall, I know this is your favorite. We're gonnahead
We've we've been a Western Conference heavy East post. Let's
let's get to the number that that pops out to
you about Randall. All right, so if I were to

(16:07):
ask you, you know what player has made the most
three pointers in any given quarter this season? So basically first, second, third,
or fourth quarter. I don't think Julius Randall would be
uh at the top of mind in regard to in
regards to that, but if you watch Julius Randall, you
know he likes to shoot early and often us rand

(16:31):
the three pointers. He likes to shoot threes early in
the game. He lead He has eighty three pointers in
the first quarter of games this season. That is more
than any other player has in any quarter this season.
And the most fun part about it is more three
pointers that he has then Julius Randall has in the second, third,

(16:54):
and fourth quarters combined. So in the second, third, and
fourth quarters, Julius Randall has made seventy eight three pointers
and in the first quarter he's made eighty. Uh, pretty amazing,
And he is now in the three point contest. So
maybe it's right because he's filling in for Anthony Simon.
Anthony Simon's he is uh, he's I guess these guys

(17:17):
just pretend it's the it's the first quarter when he's
or maybe we should just think that he's only going
to do like well on the first six balls of
his of his round, because it'll be like the first
quarter of his three point shooting round. I don't know,
from first quarter to the last quarter to the end
of the game. Clutch stats, dear and Fox, he's the
guy this season. Huh, Yeah, he's the new Chris paul I.

(17:40):
Guess right. He's Mr Clutch leading the league in in
clutch scoring with a hundred and forty eight points. Clutch
stop it all the time, for those who don't know,
basically is when a game is within five points in
the last five minutes of h of the fourth quarter

(18:01):
or over time. So he scored a hundred and forty
eight points with the game within five in the last
five but he's done it really efficiently, um shooting fifty
seven for nine seven which is on clutch shots, which
is and also thirty three on on clutch free throws.
So he's um. It's it's been about opportunity but also

(18:25):
about efficiency in in that regard. And what's amazing it
is about that is of those fifty seven uh clutch
bus buckets, only five have been assisted. So he's doing it,
you know, off the dribble. Um lots of like short
pull up jumpers that he likes. He does get to
the basket as well. Um, so the King's not the

(18:46):
team that's been in the most clutch games. That would
be the Miami Heat. Um and Bama to Bio leads
the league and clutch minutes, but darn Fox this season
leading the league and clutch scoring and basically the best
clutch shooter among guys who have taken a lot of
clutch shots. Let's shoot your clutch for us. Um, this

(19:06):
is fascinating. Everyone's got to go read your All Star
notebook because these were only just tiny snippets of a
lot of good good stuff. Maybe we should set it
on over to to Janice and Lebron if they need
this before they're drafting right before the game. Uh, but
thanks as always for joining us. NBA Pulse with Saracu
