On a special holiday episode, Virk and Demers admit the impossible: they were both wrong about something. They also discuss the ongoing soap opera in Vancouver as well as what's the deal with the recently suspended (again) Matt Rempe. Then heavy metal legend Brian Slagel (22:11) stops by to talk about the colliding worlds of hockey and hard rock, not to mention the time he hung out with Metallica AND Jaromir Jagr. Finally, with so many players hitting the beach during the NHL holiday break Jason explains why Cabo is overrated.

Speaker 1 (00:04):
NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart Podcasts.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
It is Unscripted coming at you. He's demersed, I'm Burke.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
It's great to be with all of you here on
the Holiday edition episode of Unscripted.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
As we're going into the holiday break.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
So if anything crazy happens, he's final games, well whatever,
we'll catch up with the other time. But the point
is this, we have an incredible episode today because Brian
Slegel is going to join us.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
This is a heavy metal legend. He's the founder of
Metal Blade Records.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
He helped introduced the world Jay to Metallica and Goo
Goo Dolls and is a massive hockey guy, right, Blaire slay.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Kidding, that's it. One word slare and this gooulda be awesome.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (00:46):
I had the opportunity when I did the Stanley Cup
live kind of interviews with the NHL Digital. I got
to interview a bunch of people before the games, before
all games of the seven game series. In my favorite
interview was Brian Slagel and just the stories he told
and like you know, a five minute window was absolutely credible,
So you get it for fifteen minutes.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
I cannot a wait it's.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
Gonna be great.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
And again pre yeah, if you want to listen to
Nate Thompson, he was awesome as well, talking about you know,
his mental health journey, his journey on and off the ice.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Nate was really awesome, So thanks once again to him.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
But I want to start with this because I'm all
about metrics and I've seen the numbers so far on
this podcast and episode four we not get to episode fourteen,
So there's nothing better than a little bit of Internestine warfare,
a little mutual destruction. I want Jad to go after
our producer Towel right now because it was a very
wonderful text exchange over the clips that were being posted.
So you wanted to do a break out of a
two on one because again, you're a very smart guy.

(01:38):
You played some hard games, HL, you know your stuff.
You get I wanted there's something I'm into. And Two's
point was, I'm just not sure this is an audio medium.
I'm not exactly schuol. iHeart is going to thrill the
But you explaining a two on one, it's now time
for you to take a victory lap. You can now
go ahead and dunk on my mantaw because how are
those views doing on that two on one.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
Listen, I'm I.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
My words are my wand you know, and I painted
beauty or my words are my paintbrush. I paint a
beautiful picture when I speak, and I do do a
little bit of shark radio commentary.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
Nice.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
So I've learned how to describe visually. And you know,
to watch his face because we not only went out
of text chain, but we did this, you know, in
our pre production meeting, and to watch his face kind
of just like what I was like, just trust me,
we're gonna do it. And hey, credit to him now
because you know he fought me on it and I
knew I was going to be right, but he did

(02:26):
a great job editing, putting the clips in.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
And before we get to the howk and again, just
to further tease of the episode, Tals really is in
on the new Dylan bio pick I've seen it. So
I'll give you my review of a complete Unknown after
JD's review of Conclave, which I mean again, Pope's poping
is about his peoplescriptions.

Speaker 4 (02:40):
You're gonna get, oh, pajh, nice quick quick question because
I haven't seen a few. You went from the Black
the backdrop, and now you got like the racing chair
and a bunch of this like book bookcase that's a
skew behind you.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
I'm not my parents' place written now on Maple suburb
of Toronto, Ontario. So that's why we're there via remote. Yeah,
this is my dad's bookcase.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
Fox, you're in Canada, you must you're using dial up internet.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
That's why I like different backup.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
If you're watching the video clips again, we've got lots
of great hockey talk coming up, particularly outaway centers. Perhaps
you should be offering them with me a kulpa. But Jay,
you were fired up about this, so I want to
give you that space. This is what the podcast space
is a place to air your grievances. What's a dumber
airplane rule? Bags under your seat for takeoff and landing
or no large electronics during the flight.

Speaker 4 (03:27):
I have so many gripes with the with the airline
industry and etiquette, not only from the airlines but people
as well.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
You know, people are the worst.

Speaker 4 (03:37):
But the bags under my seat, I cannot, for the
life of me stand it. Understand Like, so how I
do it is? I'll bring my backpack on it. Typically,
you know, I used to throw everything up there because
I'd have status, no big deal, and I would just
throw you know, I'd be that guy to throw my
like two small backpacks and take up all the room.
And but you're in first class. Why, I'm like, yeah,

(03:58):
oh no, I fly in the pigeon. I like to
keep myself humble and coach.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
Okay, okay, I do.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
I liked it.

Speaker 4 (04:04):
Every now and again, I throw myself in coach just
to be back with the people. Okay, the people guys, Yeah,
thank you, thank you. So I typically I put my
backpack literally behind, like up against the seat, and I
lean my legs on it and I almost like curl
my legs. So I'm keeping it super secure. It's basically
in front of my seat, like it's under my seat

(04:27):
instead of under the seat in front of me.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Yeah. And every time.

Speaker 4 (04:30):
They come by and they're like, you gotta put it
all the way under, and I'm like all the way
I'm like why, tell me, why? Tell me how this
is going to be life saving, and I will do it.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Tell me. Tell me where in the.

Speaker 4 (04:43):
FA regulations, if you can explain it to me, I'll
do it. It makes no goddamn sense, and I don't
get it. I just don't get it. Explain it to me.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
You know, I'm with you.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Air Your grievance is a lesson. I know there's a
rabbit audience right now watching us. I'm sure there's people
in the airline industry tweet us, send us a message,
dm us, let us know some watch behind this and
educate me and Demurz speaking of education, the Ottawas Centers,
we're officially wrong. And then we buried him in a
previous episode. They've won a last nine, they got the
Verkin Demurz bump. They losing Edmonton's Sunday Night. Brady could

(05:16):
chuck those scorers. Two overtime winners in the last two weeks.
I want to ask you specifically about Lenis Olmark two
shutouts nine to sixty seven, say percentage in his last
seven games before leaving against the Oilers in an upper
body injury. Now, Ollmark, as you know, Jay is a
very streaky goalie. So he started okay, then he kind
of went down. He's been unbelievable one of vest No,
but it wasn't like he was playing seventy five games

(05:36):
a great fear obviously, two goalie system him in Jeremy Swayman,
very strong defensive system.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
They're in Boston.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
I feel like I'll give them me a couple Okay,
maybe Outaway is a playoff team, but I'm still not
totally sold.

Speaker 4 (05:46):
You listen, they brought an Allmark for a reason. He's
been fantastic lights out. Unfortunately, that stings that he gets
that loss on his record after leaving.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
That's just the worst rule. You leave with an injury
and you still get.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
The loss h adding insult injury.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
Adding insult injury quite little.

Speaker 4 (06:04):
Really, that's why they wrote it is for the hockey
regular rules and regulations. But no, it Yeah, he's I mean,
when he's on, he's on. And I watched that game
last night. I really wanted to watch the last few
of Ottawa and sit there and and be like, care
are they for real? And they have so much talent
and they're very good at moving the puck up ice.
They seem really confident right now. Obviously defensively at times

(06:26):
they go to sleep, but they got a lot of
pieces in place, So I'm really I'm I'm excited to
see kind of where they can take this and how
far they can go, because I'm so sick of the East.
It's the same eight teams every season. You know, all
these teams refuse to to make that final push to
make the playoffs. They never can get it. They never

(06:46):
can get it over the finish line. It's always the
same aid. It's always I got Tampa and Toronto Round one, Tampa, Toronto,
and then there's Boston and there somewhere there. You know,
Boston will sometimes be up or they'll be like the
eighth of the first seed. So so yeah, I'm I'm
hoping they do it. I actually I want somebody. I
would love if it's like, you know, Detroit, Sin Ottawa's

(07:09):
in Buffalo's in Buffalo.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
Don't get me started. It's an absolute joke on Buffalo.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
But was not Don Gronto's fault, as you said two episodes.

Speaker 4 (07:15):
Ago, It wasn't. Yeah, clearly it's not his fault. But no,
back to Ottawa. Yeah, I dave a lot there. And obviously, listen,
they got Brady as the captain. He's a great captain
to have on the back. And you have Jake Sanderson
who's literally he started off a little slow this season,
but he's been absolutely incredible the past five six games
and and really coming into his own, as you know,

(07:37):
up to his standards, because he was a little disappointed
with the way he started the season and now he's
just flying. And you know they got the Shane Pintos
Tim Stitzla's.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
Well that's what Stutzlo. Do you think Stutzlo can be like?
To me, I'm like, he's the put up or shut
up guy. I for all this hyper on him high
draft pick.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
Is he ever gonna be like a forty goal scorer?
Is that asking too much?

Speaker 5 (07:57):
No?

Speaker 4 (07:58):
I think he can do it. I think he creates enough.
He plays hard when he's not doing all the whole
diving thing. He's he's good and he seems like he's
really kind of he's really managed that this year, and
he's playing the right way. He's got a great shot,
he's got a good escapability and good vision and makes
some really nice passes. So their power play has struggled

(08:19):
a little bit. That's the one thing I'm worried about.
But they have so much talent that I think they'll
they'll figure it out soon.

Speaker 1 (08:23):
But as you know, I mean, we had a game
on Amazon Prime and I hadn't been auto in a while.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
You know, I grew up in Kingston.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
It's only a couple hours away, and I'm hanging around
the area and walking my college beautifully. You know, obviously
the you know, just just see the House of Commons,
the Rito can out. But then to get to the arena,
the Canadian Tire Center, I mean, it is Kanada and
it is in a different universe.

Speaker 2 (08:44):
Jay, It's crazy. It took us an hour to get there. People,
when can we get the Canadian Tire Center into downtown Ottawa?
That would be great.

Speaker 4 (08:51):
And it's like a single road to get there. It's
most depressing drive from downtown so that stadium. So spend
a little dough there.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
Right, We'll give them me a couple of the Ottawa
But honestly, the entire center in Kanada could use a
little work.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Do you.

Speaker 3 (09:03):
I think you every show you sneak in a little Latin.
I like that about you.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
Episode four continues. Yeah, Mia, you said.

Speaker 4 (09:14):
Gratis something something show we need like a hardcore fin
and see all the Latin that I've dropped.

Speaker 1 (09:20):
I'll give you away an NHL unscripted We're gonna get
some gear at some point. Tal That's what I wanted
to on air meeting Right now, If you get me
in Demurs like a hoodie.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
NHL inscripted.

Speaker 1 (09:28):
With the amount of travel we do, that'll get some
buzz hats, hoodies.

Speaker 3 (09:33):
And a mic for Tale.

Speaker 4 (09:34):
He looks like a goddamn mine back there, just trying
to panamize air trap controller, air traffic controller, just giving us.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
So Bob Bender has approved the UH acquisition of a
Stuer mic, but Tal doesn't have it yet, so we're
scared to talk.

Speaker 2 (09:50):
Jada are trying to bait him into a conversation.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
I don't want people to ignore the Western Conference and
your love of the San Jose Sharks because the amount
of people right now, if I looked at our metrics,
if I asked how to dial it up, we're gonna
be big in the Bay Area because everyone knows Demurs,
they know the Sharks.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
They want us to talk.

Speaker 1 (10:04):
You're lub Askaroff, which is just a name, like if
Chris Berman was doing sports, it kissed my Askaroff.

Speaker 2 (10:09):
Well, the goldening.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
Performances at the seas.

Speaker 1 (10:14):
He hits back thirty nine saves second stee oilers three
two overtime loss, twenty three saves in the second period alone.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
That's the second highest for one period in franchise history.

Speaker 1 (10:23):
I would guests Nabakoff would have the record, but Mackenzie
Blackwood now an avalanche v Tech Vanachek week to week
with injury.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
How big are you an? Askroff? Remember when he got
drafted tenth o raw by the Preds.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
I want to say two thousand, maybe in the COVID draft,
but there's been some some taco and Askoff, what do
you feel right now?

Speaker 4 (10:39):
Was two thousand the COVID draft twenty twenty? Excuse me HEREX.
He's an old man, that's for sure, but you never
know what these Russians, you know, they can forty five
year old rookies.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
Been amazing.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
He's amazing.

Speaker 4 (10:55):
He's yeah, he's he's as advertised. I got to watch him,
and uh, I've talked to a lot of people around
the organization, you know, I do radio with them, so
I see him a lot, and yeah, he's as advertised,
and I think they're trying to wait. They wanted him
to get some HL games. It was only a matter
of time before he takes over. You know, this could
be the time. Now, you know he could. I was

(11:16):
hoping more after Christmas. Just let him get after Christmas
and four Nations kind of just let him run the
end of the season and play like eighty percent of
the games.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
But he's so good post the post. He's so good,
you know.

Speaker 4 (11:28):
I talked to Thomas Spear, who is he's the goaltender
coach for San Jose Sharks, and he was telling me
down on the Miners. He said he needed to learn
a little bit because he's very athletic and he'd make
these very rangy saves be at a position, but because
he's so athletic in that lower league, he could get
away with it. And he had to kind of learn
to be a little bit more structured and calm and

(11:50):
when he needs to make that post the post save,
yeah it's there for you, but not to always revert
to it and always kind of play like you're out
of position. So he really dialed that in. I watched
him against Edmonton. I mean, he made some ten bells,
but he was just so calm in the net, giving
up limited rebounds, you know, And they took on some
water for about two periods, like it was looked like

(12:12):
an offensive zone power play practice for Edmonton Oilers on
San Jose and and they've been playing good as of late,
they're scrappy. But you know that Edmonton team when they're
rolling downhill, but Ascroff was he was making ten bells
save after ten bells saved. So he's he is the
future of that team. I think he's there's a reason
they traded Mackenzie Blackwood for as good as Mackenzie Blackwood

(12:33):
was playing, he's the future. It's just a matter of
time that he's going to get the keys and hopefully
they maybe wait a little bit longer and kind of
you know, it depends though with v tech out, you know,
it's there's not many guys other than him, so I
think he's they're gonna roll with him for a little
bit and they have a they have. People think it's
gonna be a really long rebuild, but if you watch

(12:53):
that Sharks team a couple you know, watch him a
couple of times, you'll know that it's a it's gonna
be a lot faster rebuild than people think.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
Positive thoughts.

Speaker 1 (13:02):
I maybe nice to get a Stanley Cup obviously to
that area because you know when when when things were
rolling there at HP was amazing Shark Stanley the final
corps every year in the playoffs, Like you guys were
a juggernaut.

Speaker 2 (13:11):
It was amazing.

Speaker 4 (13:12):
Yeah, it was fun. It was fun those years. And yeah,
I mean that fan base is crazy. They they love
the team, they're knowledgeable. Uh, it's it's kind of their
team in the Bay Area. There's you know, obviously forty
nine ers in Santa Clara now, but this was this
was their team and they were proud of it. And
we had some God, we had some good teams there.
So it's you still have to win. You still have

(13:35):
to win. You have to put it all together, and
it's so hard to win the Stanley Cup. But we
had some teams where crazy how we didn't how we
didn't get to the finish line. But it's the way
does the cookie crumbles.

Speaker 2 (13:46):
Yeah, one more topic I wanted to hit you on.

Speaker 1 (13:49):
Yeah, and that's Rempy of the Rangers suspend eight games,
Mira Hayes. There's certain guys, ye, you go, they just
he just can't help himself. This guy just he just
loves getting suspended.

Speaker 4 (13:58):
Yeah, he's I was on I was on his train
and like on the Rempy train for a while, and
I think I had to jump I had to jump
into this.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
I wonder what was the moment that you jumped.

Speaker 1 (14:09):
He Okay, I like this guy plays the edge of spicty,
but he goes yeah, you know what, maybe just goes
overboard too much.

Speaker 4 (14:14):
I'm out of the fact, the fact that he can't
get over three games, they'll get suspended, and like that
one was a blatant one in the numbers.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
Just jumped into a guy like he.

Speaker 4 (14:23):
Not only a guy, their best defenseman, Miro Heyskin in
like elbow to the chin, elbow to the dome piece.
And then as he's jumping, and not that this guy
needs to jump. He's six ' ten, two hundred and
forty pounds. You don't need to jump. You could stay.
He could go on his knees and still hit guys
in the head with his elbow if he wanted to.
So yeah, I kind of I firmly jumped off the

(14:45):
Rempy train. I'm just like he needs to. I mean,
he needs to figure out how to play within the
within the lines, because listen, big a big fan of
my a big fan of who geez Luise Jason Emers,
I'm a huge fan of Raffi Torres. Yeah, I know
he's very, very polarizing, but you could argue that a

(15:07):
lot of those suspensions near the end of his career
were not suspensions that they were just because of his
history and because they wanted a piece of them, they allowed,
like because there's a couple of them, I played with
them where it wasn't even there's no way that those
were as long as suspensions as they were, But it
just he learned how to play within his style of play.

(15:29):
And yes he did play on the edge and did
have some dirty hits, but near the end he found
out a way to hit without jumping and remp He
needs to figure that out or figure out a way
to not be so chaotic and crazy when he's coming
down the ice. But it's chalk it up to the
Red bulls and potentially suit a fed but who the

(15:50):
hell knows.

Speaker 3 (15:50):
He needs to.

Speaker 1 (15:53):
For context here, this is a six to eight forward
rookie season. People love why you're good, people love the
he fights. He's a rookie, He's tough, Okay, great ejected twice,
also received a four game suspension elbow to the head
of New Jersey's Joni segens Thaler.

Speaker 2 (16:08):
That was a home game.

Speaker 1 (16:08):
March eleven, twenty two year old zero points in five
games this season, this off season, he's I'm gonna be
a better player, not just a fighter.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
Okay. Cool.

Speaker 1 (16:16):
He's been assessed four game missconects as well as eight
major penalties in twenty two regular season games.

Speaker 3 (16:21):
Crazy.

Speaker 1 (16:21):
I mean he had one goal last year, one assist,
seventy one penalty mites. He scored once of course in
the playoffs, had that big fight against Matt Martin. Everyone
loves that Matt Live Stadium outdoors. But you're a sixth
round pick.

Speaker 2 (16:31):
I get it. You're there for a role to be
a fighter, be a tough guy.

Speaker 1 (16:33):
All good, but there's a fine line between justice and
being tough and it could you imagine George Perris's reaction
again Rempy, like what are we doing, buddy?

Speaker 3 (16:41):
Oh, he's probably on the call with him, Like come on, kid,
right well, look at the tough guy. Look at Curtis McDermott.

Speaker 4 (16:47):
When he's done, he's able to hit play within the play,
within the rules, still fights.

Speaker 3 (16:52):
Look at Ryan Reeves.

Speaker 4 (16:53):
I know we got suspended recently, but he hasn't been
suspended that much. And he as much as it pains
me to say it, I mean, he played within the
lines for over nine hundred games and found a way
to be effective still fight, but you know, listen, things
happen when when you're hitting and skating that hard and

(17:13):
trying to finish guys, you're eventually going to catch somebody illegally.
And he's made no qualms about it that he had
to figure out a way to kind of work his
way through the system and make sure that he's playing
within the rules but also playing on the edge. And
that's the hardest thing to do in the NHL, is
play within the rules, but play on the edge and remp.

(17:33):
He just hasn't been able to corral that. And I
mean it's only takes. You know, you only have so
many chances, So I don't know if time's running out
for him now. Did do the Rangers want him to
come out after the eight game suspension.

Speaker 2 (17:46):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (17:47):
I didn't, I don't.

Speaker 1 (17:49):
I do know this though, everyone's fired up for our
special guest. We're four episodes in and this might be
as good as it gets. Brian Slegel heavy metal legend,
the founder of Metal Blade Records, Metallica, Slayer Goo Goo Dolls,
and at one point had season tickets for five different
NHL teams.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
Yeah, that's next on Unscripted.

Speaker 1 (18:19):
Well, what a pleasure right now to bring in Brian Slag.
We've been hyping this up all week, my man Jason
de Burr tooking this up. Jay will let you know
that in fact, he's not just a host, he's also
the guest booker here on Unscripted, and it's great to
have Brian with us. In case you do not know
the name, You're gonna know the name because Hulu is
releasing a new documentary series in the history of heavy metal.
It's called Into the Void that's coming out in twenty
twenty five. And Brian also hosts one hundred Songs That

(18:41):
Define heavy Metal.

Speaker 2 (18:42):
It's a podcast as he is the Metal Blade Record CEO.

Speaker 1 (18:45):
And of course if someone wants just a top line, yeah,
he's going. Who introduced all of us to my brother's
favorite band? That would be Metallica, along with Slayer and
Goo Goo Dolls. Brian, what a pleasure to have you
here on Unscripted. Thanks for making a few minutes.

Speaker 5 (18:58):
Thanks for having me. I appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
Okay, Metallica, everything on Metallica as.

Speaker 3 (19:03):
Much as you can.

Speaker 2 (19:05):
My brother's only gonna listen to Metallica.

Speaker 1 (19:06):
So Google Dolls will get to the second all very
cool Slayer, awesome Metallica.

Speaker 2 (19:10):
How'd you find it? How'd you know? Headfield give it
to me?

Speaker 5 (19:12):
So yeah, that was a crazy story. So back in
nineteen eighty, nineteen eighty, actually, no December nineteen eighty, there's
a band called the Michael Shaker Group who was playing
at a venue called the Country Club in Reciina, California.
And at that time it's funny years later, like every
all the bands that came out of LA were all
at that show, but nobody knew each other. So after
the show, in the parking lot was this There was

(19:34):
a movement called the New Waver British heavy metal, which
is this big thing happening England was iron Maid and
def Lepper and all this sort of stuff. It was
just starting. Nobody in LA knew anything about it except
for me and my friend John corn Aerans. And after
that Michael Shaker show, he was in the parking lot
and he saw a kid wearing a Saxon European T shirt. Now,
in nineteen eighty, nobody knew who Saxon was, let alone
had a European T shirt. So he runs up to

(19:55):
this guy. He goes, you, where did you get that shirt?
He goes, you know who Saxon. He's like, yeah, big fan,
Da da da da. So that was Lara's Ulrich And
the next day I met Lars Skared to my house
and we started hanging out and listening to music and
going to shows together, and so I got the idea
fast forward. I got the idea to put together a
compilation album of local LA heavy metal bands. Because this

(20:16):
was nineteen eighty one, nobody knew it existed. There's no Internet,
the labels don't care. So I got this idea to
put this compilation album together. So Lars calls me and said,
if I put together a band, kind of be on
your record. They said sure, and that's how Metallica started.

Speaker 3 (20:30):
Oh my wow.

Speaker 2 (20:31):
So it's a chance encounter with Lars and he's looking
for an in and you're.

Speaker 3 (20:34):
Helping him out casually hanging out with Lars.

Speaker 5 (20:37):
Yeah, it was. It was funny when I first met
him because he had just moved from Denmark to southern California,
and I don't think he expected anybody La to know
who these bands were that he was really into. So
that's how we became friends, and then he started a
band which did okay.

Speaker 4 (20:54):
Just okay, And you know they're man tying it back
to me. They're so important in my you know, growing
up process. And then you know, I played for the
San Jose Sharks. They're a huge part of it. And
obviously with you, you're a huge hockey fan, and if
people don't know you, you're like an enormous hockey fan.
You once had five season tickets to five different teams
in one year, which is crazy.

Speaker 2 (21:15):
How does that work? Blind? Yeah, you can't even get
to that many games.

Speaker 6 (21:18):
What are we doing?

Speaker 5 (21:19):
Well, yeah, that's true, but I got to as many
as I can. I had most of those on the
West Coast. I had Kings, Sharks, Coyotes.

Speaker 2 (21:27):
And uh Love Shane Doan, Yeah and uh and Anaheim.

Speaker 5 (21:32):
So I had all those for it. But then I
also was in New York a lot. We had an
officuly in New York for many, many years. So I
had Devil's tickets and this was the old Christmas Tree
uniform Devils, so they were super cheap. You had all
those season tickets were cheap if you add up what
I'm paying now for my Goalden Nights. Tickets probably isn't
even close to that now, so, but it was a
lot of fun. I still got to a lot of
those games. I might I might have seen a hundred

(21:53):
games that year or something. It was crazy.

Speaker 3 (21:55):
What now, now? Tell me that?

Speaker 4 (21:56):
Like, because you just said before we're talking, before you
said the name of your company, your record label was
kind of stemmed from hockey, and how did that all
mesh you? Why did hockey and you? How does that
mix together?

Speaker 5 (22:08):
Yeah? So I became a big hockey fan. Basically it
never played. Unfortunately, we couldn't afford it when I was
a kid. It was very expensive here in LA. But
I became a big fan around nineteen eighty one, eighty
two of the Islander Stanley Cup run and I just
became a big fan. Long story about a friend of
mine who printed my fanzine had season tickets. They never
used them. He said, you want these? I said sure
to the Kings and I started going. And I was hooked,

(22:29):
hook line and sinker at that point. And when I
was starting the label, it wasn't really starting a label.
I was just putting out a record. But you had
to call the label something, So I was gonna call
it Skull and Crossbones, but the bass player from Blondie
had a label called Skull and Crossbow. It's like, I
gotta think of a name like, well, metal would make
sense because it's heavy metal, and I go, well, blade
because blade there. You know, hockey skates have blades. I

(22:50):
was a big, big medieval fan with swords and stuff,
so like, oh, metal blades. So that's how it started.

Speaker 2 (22:55):
I love the origin of it. That's pretty cool.

Speaker 1 (22:56):
We're talking about Brian Slagel, the founder of Metal Blade Records.
I'm sure you've met some cool players over the years.
Give me some interactions of some guy you've met, Oh, so.

Speaker 5 (23:06):
Many of them. Well, one of my favorite ones, and
I told the story part two of it when when
I talked to Jason the steleic Ap Finals last year
was the Army or Yoger he when he was playing
for the Penguins. Friends of mine worked for Stan Fischler,
and they got they got concocted that I was gonna
have Yager meet Metallica. Now nobody had contacted me about this,

(23:26):
Nobody contact Yager about it. But Stan Fischer just put
in his column one week and I'm like, what is
what is this? So anyway, it became a possibility because
I asked the Metallica guys and said, hey, would you
want to meet Yager? And they are big boggy fans
at that time, so I go absolutely, and then the
Yagers like, let's make it happen. So as that choice,

(23:46):
what happened? Chance? What happened? The Sharks were playing the Penguins,
and the Penguins had a night off before the game,
so they're flying to San Jose. So that night was
perfect and Batallica's in the studio recording, so I arranged
it to get Yager and a couple other guys out,
took him out in the limo, took him to the studio.
They all hung out, but I couldn't figure out who
was more excited, whether it was the hockey players or

(24:08):
the band guys because Metallica's you know, head feels like
younger saw my stick. And Bob Rock was the producer
and he's Canadian. His kid's favorite player was Yager, so
it was a blast. And the ride to the studio,
you know, your your army was pretty shy, and you know,
wasn't really great at English, so he didn't say a
whole lot but on the way back we just talked
the whole time about hockey and stuff. He was great.

(24:29):
So when he come to Prague, come to my sports bar.
I'll take care of you all this stuff. So it
was when they became friends.

Speaker 2 (24:35):
After I was in the sports bar. Now go ahead, JA.

Speaker 4 (24:38):
I was in San Jose for six years and I
would have cut off my left arm to go to
the studio when Metallica was recording. Oh my god, I
met them. It's crazy. I had, you know. I we
talked a little bit about before we went live here
about Dan Boyle and and how big of a metal
fan he was in you know, other than Yager. Have

(24:59):
you really have you seen a lot of guys like
earlier in your career or now later that are metal fans.

Speaker 5 (25:06):
Probably earlier. I hosted a podcast for three years with
Sean Rourke from NHL dot com, and he had the idea,
let's let's do a podcast about athletes, specifically hockey players
that are into heavy metal. I go, these guys are
going to say anything. If you've heard these interviews with
these guys, who are gonna get him for five minutes.
But with the first one we did was Drew Stafford,
who like was notoriously bad with interviews. We talked to

(25:28):
him at hour he knew more about metal than I did,
so I ranted a whole bunch of guys again. Mike
McKenna is a really close friend of mine. I know
he played with Jason. Yeah a minute, He's another guy
that probably knows more about metal than I do. And
there's a lot of guys over the years that have
done it, not as much anymore. A lot of these
guys now are more into edmf back in the days

(25:48):
shaboozy now.

Speaker 1 (25:49):
Yeah, but I'm glad that DM has made a good
push because demers and I do like EDM. But when
you say, Brian, I know you're being humble when someone
says that they know more than I do, Like, what
does that mean?

Speaker 2 (25:58):
Like there their references are deeper than yours. Their quotes
of me, like to what to look because to be
at your level is pretty insane.

Speaker 5 (26:03):
No, yeah, but there's a lot of bands. I mean,
you know, I'm busy enough with you know, running the
label and doing all that sort of stuff, so I
can't I pay attention as much as I can. But
there's so much out there, and like both Drew and
Mike McKenna. They were talking about bands I hadn't even
heard of before.

Speaker 4 (26:19):
Oh, that's well, speaking of bands you do know great
segue Jason talk a little bit about The Goo Goo
Dolls and just how you found them, worked with them,
and that whole process.

Speaker 5 (26:30):
Yeah, so they're always the one that go How did
the Goo Goo Dolls end up on Metal Blade? But
we had a punk label back in the eighties and nineties.
We had like Dri and coc and a whole bunch
of really big punk rock bands, and The Goo Goo
Doll started in Buffalo, New York as a punk rock band,
like Johnny would sing half the songs and Robbie the
bass player, singing the other half, and they were super punk.
And one of the guys who works at Metal Blade

(26:52):
is from Buffalo, so you had a lot of connections there,
and he said, Hey, here's this band. They put out
this one record called Jed the Goo Goo Dolls. Would
you be interested? And I listened to it. I thought
it was really cool. So we saw them just this
kind of fun, little punk band, and they kind of
grew into a band that if you listen to the
stuff that we did, it sounds a lot like the
Foo Fighters. And then a boy named Goo came out,
which is the first big record and the song name

(27:13):
which is the first big hit they had. And it's
funny because we were making the record and Johnny came
to me and said, hey, wait, I wrote this acoustic song.
It doesn't really fit with the rest of the record,
but we recorded it. Should we put it on the
record or not? I go, I listened to it. I go, look,
it's a good song. Just throw it on the record.
And then that ended up being their first massive hit,
and then they kind of became known for being more
of a mellow band, but their early stuff is really

(27:35):
really fun.

Speaker 4 (27:36):
So you know, you're a Knight's season ticket holder now
and you've you know, you've watched hockey for a long time.
Who is like what type of player do you like
number one that's most closely associate with you because you're
in the metal Do you like guys at like a
Rempier or a Kegan Colesar that like, you know, they
play a physical game. Are you more the the skill,
the sexy, you know, the the slash of it all.

(27:59):
That's jamming on guitar, that's a little bit more like
Jack Eichel or Shay Theodore.

Speaker 5 (28:03):
Well, it's it's interesting because I like it both ways.
I like it rough and tumble, but I love the skill.
The skill is my favorite thing. My favorite player in
the league is Austin Matthews just because I've never seen
as amazing as Ovichkin is. I've never seen a guy
score goals like Austin Matthews does. He just it's it's
insane and on the nights. I love Michael. I got
to interview him actually for the NHL last summer, and

(28:24):
all we did was talk music. He's an old school
like rock and metal guy. It was great. We talked
fifty minutes from music. He's like, well, that was really fun.
So I've grown to really like him. But he's got
a two undred foot game now, which is that's why
he won a Stanley Cup. Because he's got a two
unred foot game. And other guys that I won't mention
don't play two hundred feet and they don't have any
cups yet.

Speaker 2 (28:44):
It's a great way of soon a guy became a
two hundred foot game.

Speaker 3 (28:48):
I tell you he knows more about hockey than most
than you.

Speaker 1 (28:51):
I think, Brian, if you want to add another podcast
to host, you can go ahead and take my spot.

Speaker 2 (28:57):
You and Jason apparently both though Dan Boyle quite well.

Speaker 5 (29:00):
Yes. So Dan used to wear a metal Blade T
shirt when he was doing interviews after the games for
a couple of years, and we had him on the
podcast that I mentioned earlier did with Sean Rourke and
we became friends and I hung out a few times
when he was playing for the Rangers in New York.
Just a really good dude. I was bummed out. His
favorite band was Faith No More. Yes, he went on
the road. It was like roading for them for a

(29:22):
couple of weeks. And they had a show in Williamsburg,
New York a few years ago. And I went to
the show and it is great, and I left and
the manager of Faith No More was texting. He said, hey,
are you still here? I said, no, I re splitched.
Oh Dan Boyle's here and he wants to say hi.
I'm like, oh darn, And he's wearing a metal bade
sure of course. So he's a great dude.

Speaker 4 (29:44):
What's your kind of I see all the jerseys behind
you a little bit. Number one. We'll get into those
in a second. But do you have a game or
like you talked about the Islanders Cup runs, is there
a game that really stands out to you that is
one of your favorite moments or teams.

Speaker 5 (30:00):
I've spent so many of them, but the second King
Stanley Cup Championship where they won an overtime while Routina scored,
probably that game was the most like because I was
you know, I'd been a King season ticket over since
eighty two and never in my lifetime they ever won
a Cup. And when when the first Cup, I was
actually in Europe, so I missed the whole thing. I
missed the parades, I missed almost like they didn't win

(30:21):
for me. So the second one was a lot of fun.
Lars was actually there at that game too, and I
made a critical mistake. I was there with my buddy
Monty Pittman, who was the daughter's guitar player, and we
both lived in the South Bay. And afterwards we were like,
so should we stick around or should we leave? Because
you know, LA is famous for burning down downtown La
when their teams win. So we left early and we

(30:43):
went to Hermosa where the Kings Bar is and it's
going to be this big party. Nothing crickets. It was
like nothing had ever happened. And then I get a
picture later of Lars in the in the after the
King's after party holding the Stanley Cup over his head
saying like, oh, they'll let anybody touch this thing. It's like, well,
that was not a good move. But that game, though,
was just phenomenal. Just overtime and seeing the Kings win

(31:06):
was that was so much fun.

Speaker 3 (31:07):
I love that.

Speaker 4 (31:07):
Your favorite Cup win was the year I got reverse swept.
I was in San Josean we got reverse swept that
year toohears I watched. I was watching that goal at
a bar in Austin, Texas with a buddy of mine
and I literally turned to him and I said, I
need to get absolutely blacked out drunk because I'm depressed,
no joke.

Speaker 5 (31:27):
Yeah, that's that's a rough that's a rough oneof.

Speaker 1 (31:30):
Oh, we would like to squeeze in some news in
the pot as well if we can't. Bryan, So, Chris
Krider got a healthy scratch. If you were Chris Grider
and you just got a healthy scratch as he did.
What's the best metal band to help you vent that frustration?

Speaker 5 (31:42):
Oh? Well, you got to go to a Slayer like Slayers.
If you're angry and upset, to put on Rain and
Blood and just go crazy, it's like thirty minutes of
complete insanity. So ill. I'm a big Denver Bronco fan
and they lost a Super Bowl one year, like fifty
five to ten or something.

Speaker 2 (31:58):
I was so mad.

Speaker 5 (31:59):
I put on that record and chopped I had a
door that was broken already and I chopped it down.
I'm listening to that right.

Speaker 3 (32:05):
Oh my god.

Speaker 5 (32:05):
It was very that was very vengeful. Yeah, Rain of Blood,
that's the one.

Speaker 1 (32:10):
Brian Sligel Metal Blade Record CEO again one hundred songs
to find heavy Metal as a podcast? Who are going
to release the new documentary series on the history of
heavy metal Into the Void in twenty twenty five.

Speaker 3 (32:21):
Glad you one question before you leave? Who do you
got winning the Cup this year?

Speaker 5 (32:26):
Well, so I got to go with the team that
I picked at the beginning, and I'm usually pretty good
at this. I've got five of the last.

Speaker 2 (32:32):
Six I've got don't tell me you picked the Rangers.

Speaker 5 (32:34):
No no, no, no, no. Five of the last six,
I've got at least one team in the Cup finals.

Speaker 2 (32:39):
So wow.

Speaker 5 (32:40):
I put the Leafs and the Oilers to go to
the final with the Oilers finally winning and the leaves
are looking good. Oilers not looking so.

Speaker 4 (32:47):
Good, oilers. No, Oilers have cleaned it up. Now they're
they're you're the need they need to trade some but
they've cleaned up.

Speaker 3 (32:53):
But I like that. I actually love that pick.

Speaker 4 (32:55):
That was a lot of people have the Oilers going
back and Toronto is a little one. A lot of
people picked him in Toronto, but no one kind of outside.
So I I don't mind that pick. If they can
a healthy with that goaltending, now they have a chance.

Speaker 5 (33:07):
Yeah, I picked him because of the coach. I think.
I think he's a coach for them. He's gonna He's
already made them play more of a playoff style now. Yeah,
they still have the explosiveness. As long as Matthews isn't
out too long, they'll be good. Yeah, Evanton kind of
gets it together at the end of the year, but
they need they need help on defense, and I'm not
sure about their goaltending either.

Speaker 2 (33:23):
Chiefs gotta be a metal guy. I mean, Craig Beruby
has got to be just you would hope. So I
mean that's if ever there was a guy Taylor bade
to it. We still see Brian. This was awesome and
seriously can't think it out. Thanks for supporting unscare in credible.

Speaker 5 (33:34):
Oh thanks for you guys having me. I loved it
and anytime I'm here m hm.

Speaker 2 (33:47):
Again, Brian Slagel was awesome. It was such a jode jay.

Speaker 6 (33:50):
You hooked it up.

Speaker 2 (33:51):
Man, I appreciate it.

Speaker 4 (33:53):
I'm I'm doing booking, I'm doing social media, I'm doing interviews,
and I'm the talent. And I don't say that lightly
but I will now uh, and I'm the content talent.

Speaker 3 (34:05):
What else do you want me to do here? Help us?

Speaker 5 (34:08):
Help me?

Speaker 4 (34:09):
But I just want to know you did a little
radio hit in Vancouver. I don't know are you getting
paid enough with the network and do you need help?

Speaker 2 (34:15):
Listen? Every dollar count you know how this works.

Speaker 1 (34:17):
So every week I appear on the Fan five ninety
in Toronto on Fridays, I appear on nine to sixty
in Calgary on Thursdays, and then I go Vancouver Radio
six fifty on Mondays.

Speaker 2 (34:25):
So listen, you add up.

Speaker 1 (34:26):
Those radio hits, a little bit of exposure, and especially
after Taal told us the numbers.

Speaker 2 (34:30):
Now I'm really pumping up unscripted like normal.

Speaker 1 (34:32):
When they bring me in, they go, here is Emmy
Award winner at nam Verkar major League BASEB play insider.

Speaker 2 (34:36):
We also talk hockey in movies.

Speaker 1 (34:37):
Now.

Speaker 2 (34:37):
They go, hey, guys, guys, you gotta really mention on scripts.

Speaker 1 (34:40):
They go, Emmy Award winner, MLB Network, NHL Network and
the co host of NHL and scripted with Verkin demurs.

Speaker 2 (34:45):
I'm like, guys, every little bump helps.

Speaker 3 (34:47):
Do they preface it with podcast startup? Are we in
that route podcast start up?

Speaker 4 (34:54):
No?

Speaker 2 (34:54):
But they did ask me. They go, who is it?
I go, it's a collaboration with the NHL and iHeartMedia.

Speaker 1 (34:58):
They go, wow, excuse us. I didn't want a big
hitter over here. I'm like, yeah, so it is a
big deal. But Vancouver this week they I wanted to
talk about this whole well, actually, I want to bring
it up to them.

Speaker 2 (35:07):
Was the old j T Miller Elias Peterson situations.

Speaker 1 (35:10):
Now they said JT is pouring cold water on it,
and I said, Dak, But let me be clear, I'm
living in New Jersey. There's not a ton of Canucks
talk living in New Jersey. Okay, I know everything happened
with the Rangers right now with a tirefire, they are,
the Sabers are in mess, et cetera.

Speaker 2 (35:24):
The fact that I'm.

Speaker 1 (35:25):
Aware that there's dissension in Vancouver cannot be portending well.
So whether or not it's a minor issue, whether it's
a major issue being blown up, whatever, the point is
this Vancouver is a tricky team for me, Jake, cause
I look at them and I go humm, Like part
of me says that they could make a deep run.

Speaker 2 (35:39):
Of course, I mean with with Archer Sea Lofts, they
could make a deep run a year ago.

Speaker 1 (35:43):
But right now they're a wild card team the Western
Conference is is it currently set? Maybe maybe the Flames
enter the picture, whatever, But Vancouver has been an odd
season for me, A little bit up, a little bit down.

Speaker 2 (35:54):
I don't want my star players fighting you.

Speaker 3 (35:57):
Oh.

Speaker 4 (35:58):
I have a lot of opinions on this because I
and I'll get to I'll get to the last part.
I just listen to like spitting Chicklets and Pod and I,
you know, typically I agree with them, and I think
they're so far wrong on this about trying to trade
one of these guys. I think it's the dumbest take.
And here's the thing with that, okay, regardles the media,
Number one, just let it die, like, go find something else,

(36:19):
Go do your job, go find something else.

Speaker 3 (36:21):
Leave it alone. You know. JT.

Speaker 4 (36:23):
Miller comes back from getting a mental reset and just
thrown right in the fire immediately with all this nonsense
of him and Peterson.

Speaker 3 (36:30):
And here's the thing.

Speaker 4 (36:31):
Who gives a shit if they don't like each other?
So media, let it die. I don't know exactly what's
going on in that room, but if they do have
some issues, squash it. And if you can't squash it,
who gives a rats ass? Who gives a shit? Keep
bleeping me out?

Speaker 3 (36:46):
I love it? Who cares? If you I don't care.

Speaker 4 (36:49):
You know how many guys I played with that I
didn't like, tons endless guys that I didn't like, didn't
say five words to in the room.

Speaker 2 (36:57):
Not that just just give us one name.

Speaker 3 (36:59):
No I won't give you.

Speaker 4 (37:00):
I won't give you one name. But but not like that.
We just didn't get it. We didn't get along, and
get along like you know, I blame yourself.

Speaker 2 (37:06):
So I was a jerk to him, but he also
did you.

Speaker 4 (37:08):
Know me, every everybody loved me there's nobody that dislikes me.
But uh yeah, I'm sure there's guys that dislike me.
But when you know that I'm going on the ice,
you know that I'm playing for you, and I'm playing
for the team. You're playing for the guy next to you.
So whoever's saying trade one of them, you don't know
anything about hockey and if they if they have to result,

(37:28):
like unless somebody did something to you know, I don't private, yeah,
something private, nefarious, Yeah, but I don't see that happening.
I don't see Elias Petterson as a guy that would
do that, and I don't see JT.

Speaker 3 (37:41):
Miller. JT. Miller's a family.

Speaker 4 (37:42):
I know both these guys from multiple guys in the
league that they're great guys. So they might just not
connect on a certain level. They might not like each other.
It just might not work.

Speaker 3 (37:53):
You know. JT.

Speaker 4 (37:53):
Miller is very fiery and Elias Peterson's more ice, so
he might be yelling at Petterson, hey, pick it up,
pick it up, and Pederson doesn't quite like it and
it probably doesn't sit.

Speaker 3 (38:03):
Well with him.

Speaker 4 (38:03):
But again, if you guys can win and play and
just sit there and be like guys, I don't care
if you hate each other. I don't care if you
want to stab them with a knife when you're on
the ice, learn how to play together. And that's you know,
if these two guys can't figure out how to play together,
which it doesn't see it seems like they play fine together.
They're on the ice for four on fours together, they're

(38:25):
playing power play together, they're scoring, they're passing each other
for goals. So everything's just shut the hell up and like.

Speaker 2 (38:32):
So it's not necessarily much to do about nothing. They
may hate each other, but you're just saying, who cares.
It doesn't matter if they do or they don't like it.

Speaker 3 (38:37):
Juke cares. Just play that.

Speaker 1 (38:39):
Don't want to close with this final thought, which is
gonna be New Year's Resolutions, because we're gonna come out
with twenty twenty five on fire. I can't imagine you're
a resolutions guy. There's no way. Maybe I'm wrong. I
can't imagine Jasonibursitz there and goes, you know what I'm
gonna do this next year. It just seems so hokey
and ridiculous. But prove me wrong. Maybe you are a
resolutions guy. I do it a little bit, and it's

(38:59):
always the same resolution, which is be on my phone
a little left and now thanks you. I can't because
you are rightly putting us on social media. So I'm like,
i gotta check out demurs add to my story. I'm like,
he's right, we're trying to grow the audience here. Quite frankly,
unscript has to grow. But be on my phone last
would be my resolution.

Speaker 4 (39:14):
You ah, yeah, I think the whole thing is contrived
and stupid. I just think any of that is it's consumerism.
It's a way for people to sell things. Yeah, I
think if you want something to get done in your life,
just do it. I know it's sounds stupid, and if
you need that day, listen, if people need that day
to maybe spark something. But there's a reason that gym

(39:38):
memberships go off the hook on New Year's and that's
the biggest month in gym's, the first month off. But
keeping up with that discipline is the hardest thing. So
it's just, you know, do what you need to do
to get motivated and be as best a human as possible.

Speaker 1 (39:55):
But there's nothing worse to someone said I'm gonna lose
fifteen pounds. That's my New Year's resolution and theime the genu.

Speaker 2 (39:59):
There and then by February they're gone.

Speaker 4 (40:01):
Yeah, that's it. So I'm just like, I like more consistency.
If you do something really small and you do it
over and over again and you do that for a
full year. Yeah, I'm you don't have to people make
sweeping declarations on New Year. It's like, you get off
your phone a little bit more. That's a good one.
Do something that you can do and build with that.

Speaker 3 (40:17):
Like yeah, and you know.

Speaker 4 (40:19):
It's like goal setting. You know, you set that one
to start and then you set them a little bit more,
a little bit more, so you just kind of get
your body used to being in the uncomfortable of getting
off your phone for maybe an hour less a day,
and then from there you just grow. But yeah, like
the whole notion of all we go to New Year's
and say now I'm gonna lose, Now I'm gonna be
skinny or something, it's like, just do it to other

(40:41):
eleven months in the year. Just put down the put
down the doughnut, go to the gym, put pick up
some weights.

Speaker 3 (40:49):
Just pick up some weights.

Speaker 1 (40:50):
Last thought, and we'll wrap things up. Oh zempic dicey,
I'm gonna do it. If I know somebody's a cal
I'm taking ozmpic, like good luck when you grow a
third head.

Speaker 3 (40:59):
Yeah, it's it's another one. It's like a Camp La
June thing.

Speaker 4 (41:03):
You're gonna see, you know, and you're gonna see like
a class action lass who come out in twenty five years.
You'll be sitting that your kids will be like, oh,
what's this ozempic And you're gonna be all back in
my day, I one hundred percent percent.

Speaker 1 (41:19):
I lost weight, but I shortened my lifespan by a
dozen years.

Speaker 4 (41:22):
The studies on the studies on it already coming out
of like the minimal or like it's reduces bone density
and it's crazy like what it does your stomach anytime?

Speaker 3 (41:36):
You know.

Speaker 4 (41:36):
I've some people I know that have taken it and
they're like, oh, yeah, it's if I uh, if I
drink any alcohol, like I get like, oh, it's like awful,
like my stomach's and not like don't you think that's
probably bad for you that you and maybe you shouldn't
be drinking and taking ozempic if you're taking if you're
deciding to lose weight.

Speaker 1 (41:55):
Oh, it is the holiday season. Obviously, it's a great
time for everyone to be with friends and family. I
hope everyone has a wonderful time. And I'm curious from
a hockey perspective, Jay, as people are shutting things down,
you know, as you time. For NHL players, the roster
phreeze keeps players from getting traded. Guys can get away
a little bit. So what do players do? Did you
go to Cabo?

Speaker 2 (42:11):
Is that your thing?

Speaker 4 (42:14):
Much to my sugar and I went to Cabo, got
dragged there every year. Some of the guys said it
would be different, and it would be oh, I we'll
have a good time, and I'm oh my god. I
like to be a little bit, you know, I get
antsy going to the same place more than once. And
I started kind of Me and my wife started doing
different when we were dating at the time. We started

(42:35):
doing different little trips. We went to moaib Utah Wow,
went like on a via Ferada and like climbed side
of a mountain. Stuff like that. We went and said
this really cool resort. We'd go up like north in Flagstaff.
We kind of bounce around and try to do a
little different things. I went to Kabo like my second
year and we rented a huge house. There's fourteen people

(42:56):
in the house, and eight people got neurovirus for a
week and we were not a week. So we're there
for five days, and for four of the five days
people were out of commission. I didn't get it, and
it was like me and two other guys didn't get it,
and we were just basically living in this mansion house.

(43:19):
Everybody was sick, like violently sick, like you. And then
the best part of that trip is the day we're
about to leave one of the girls who was sick
the whole time, because let's get a picture of everybody together,
because everybody was like feeling a little bit better on
the last day, like theymeter. Yeah, well they went to Cobo.

(43:42):
They went to Cobba to get violently sick, and then
went home.

Speaker 3 (43:44):
So that was their vacation.

Speaker 4 (43:46):
And then I look, you know, two days later, and
she's posted the picture online saying best trip ever. False advertising,
false advertising, And I want, I was like, weren't you
sick for four days?

Speaker 3 (44:02):
Great?

Speaker 2 (44:02):
What this wasn't?

Speaker 1 (44:03):
The feel good story was, But I thought, You're like, oh, dude,
I love a good holiday break at that But you're
like no. I actually I've had bad experiences with it.

Speaker 2 (44:10):
I like the well, I.

Speaker 4 (44:10):
Never got sick, but I got like I always listen, Hey,
daddy's gonna have a good time always.

Speaker 1 (44:17):
I mean the option of in the past players playing
on Christmas daily awful.

Speaker 2 (44:21):
Rightly, it is nice in the league, says dude, take
three days just chill.

Speaker 4 (44:25):
Yeah, you need to give I think guys need the break.
I don't love the break they have now, the not
the All Star break, but they have like the bye week.

Speaker 3 (44:33):
I don't. I don't love that.

Speaker 4 (44:34):
I think just spread it out more throughout the season
and have more days off throughout the season. I think
that's what guys more need because even though you get
that week break, you're then just pounded. You're in the
you're in the everyday grind of it, and I feel
like having an extra couple of days every now and
again is more impactful for guys than just one week,
you know, lumped into the middle of the season. I

(44:56):
just I don't love it. I never did. I think
it's something that I would get rid of because you
have the All Star break, which is great if you're
not in the also give me a three four days,
but then sprinkle just some more days off and let
the season finish earlier.

Speaker 1 (45:09):
I want to wish everybody Merry Christmas out there, a
happy Hanukkah, happy Holidays. We're gonna be back and better
than ever more Unscripted in twenty twenty five. We're gonna crush,
just like a special guest to give us a headfield
on the way out.

Speaker 6 (45:20):
Yeah.
