all time, Dwight Howard. Stop by the set of Orlando

(00:25):
sober or get pulled over, Have a great night and
drive safe. Lots to get into with Dwight Howard, a
terrific conversation, a quick one, but we covered it all here,
his time in Central Florida, what these eight years meant
to him, what he would do again if he had
the opportunity, but most importantly, his goal of helping put
Orlando on the map for NBA basketball, and he certainly
(00:47):
did that. What the fan base meant and continues to
mean to Dwight Howard, and how fondly he looks at
his time here in Central Florida. Terrific conversation with Dwight Howard,
our guest on this edition of Magic Squad.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
So those fawns long enough, they Orlando Magic This is

What surprises you more, Dwight, that George is still here
after all these years, or that I'm still here, or
that we still have a show of some kind.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
What's surprises No, it's not surprising that you got it still. Yes,
we appreciate it. Thank you. You started the would you rathers?
Speaker 1 (01:37):
We did?
Speaker 3 (01:37):
We did do that. We can't have that on air
right now. I have some crazy would you rather for
you guys.
Speaker 4 (01:43):
We can't do that. You can't do it to that.
Speaker 5 (01:45):
No, but think about think we were just talking before
you got in. We were ahead of our time, like
all of us, all of us, weren't we. Yes, we
were ahead of our time.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
Yes, you were doing viral videos before viral videos.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
We were.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
We were social media before for social media, So we
were really like the catalyst for all the stuff that's
going on now.
Speaker 4 (02:06):
To completely agree, it really started with you guys.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
Well, nobody wanted to see us, it was it was
you joining the show that certainly helped. So hey, maybe
at some point we'll rekindle that, right, we'll bring it back.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
It's back, it's back now.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
But I gotta get your thoughts right when you got
notified that you're going into the Magic Hall of Fame,
just give us, give us your thoughts. What were the
emotions kind of came.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
Know what to think because this one called me and
I was like he playing with my head and.
Speaker 4 (02:35):
I didn't know what to do.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
I was like I was in shock with to ask kill.
I was just like this can't be for real, like
and then I just started to like.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
You can take crying. I'm just kidding, Well I was.
You didn't cry with me on the phone. No, I
didn't cry with you on the phone. But I've been
crying a lot as memory. Yeah, oh yeah, every time.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
I mean that's every day because I have pictures of
all the stuff that have.
Speaker 4 (03:05):
In Orlando, all up and down my house.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Stairwells, everywhere, you know, So just to actually be here
and it's here now is insane. You know I was
a baby when I came here, literally a literal baby.
They have no tattoos. I still don't have facial air.
Then have no hair on my head, you know what
I'm saying. So it's like a whole difference. It's crazy,
(03:31):
but I'm super happy to be home.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
Well, do white people that remember that time? You remember
the signs in all the windows, right, you remember the
flags everywhere. You remember here's the leading voke atter for
the All Star Game in Orlando, Florida. Right, Defensive Player
of the Year, second for MVP. Right, you think of
the All Star Game appearances, Think about this time in
this city, right for those years, right, you're here for
(03:53):
eight years, trip to the finals in O nine, I
mean just electric, absolutely electric for magic basketball.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
Yes, it was. It was everything.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Man, Words can't really describe how uh.
Speaker 4 (04:11):
Awesome the time was.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Just as a just go back to me being a
little kid coming here and how grateful and thankful I
was just to play, you know. And I remember it
was either Mike be Aunchie or what was the tall
one tall reporter d or John Denton. They b Art
(04:35):
wrote an article about, uh, please Dwight, don't lose that
smile and I remember that cause it stuck with me
my whole career. You know, with everything that's going, don't
lose who you are. And this place really brought out
who who I, Who I am the best of me. So, uh,
(04:55):
just reliving all these different moments, to good moments, the
bad moments, just all these different moments. It's still great
just to be a part of it. Just say, oh
this happened, I remember this.
Speaker 4 (05:10):
Oh he cuts me out, But dang, that was a
good ass curse out.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
But I needed that, all these little moments, you know
what I'm saying, Every little interaction, you know, just comes back.
Driving down the Highway going to seven to eleven, you know,
driving on Orange Blossom Trail, you know, seeing them all
you know, all these different going to waffle house, you know.
So it's just so many memories because I literally grew
up in Orlando. A lot of people here grew up
(05:37):
with me. So you know, uh, it's crazy. It's just
crazy to be back here and just see it, like
he still looks the same. I guess I still look
the same.
Speaker 4 (05:47):
You still look the same too, But we're a lot older,
you a lot better.
Speaker 5 (05:51):
Than I'm expanding all kinds of it is not a
good look over here for.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
Me, But it's just great to see you guys. Is
great to see Shelley, is great to see alex Is.
You know everyone you know, and you know, after years
and stuff like that, you have those moments where it
might be upset.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
Like God, Doug at this person, and y'all probably upset
it me too.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
I'll tell I could think of it.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
I could think of a time in twenty thirteen in
a restaurant. Yeah, I was pretty upset first what happened?
You just weren't here a couple of years after that,
you know. But you know what, but we always looked
at a different Dwight because we always appreciated what you did,
and not just on the floor, but the time you
took for the autographs, the time you took, the impact
(06:38):
you have and still have here in Central Florida. That
was shoot, that was big to you, and I think
that was that comes to mind as well. So I
would it could have should have. I know, you know,
you go back to that time. But what advice would
twenty twenty five Dwight give to twenty twelve Dwight After
all the life that's happened in between right.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
Oh, what would I say myself?
Speaker 5 (07:00):
Stay you it.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Sutter down, yes, because that's exactly what I would have said.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
But you know, I.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
Experience is the best teacher in life. Experience is the
best teacher. And sometimes I said this earlier. And I'm
only going to tell you guys part of this. Sometimes
God like to play baseball. I used to play baseball
with you.
Speaker 5 (07:29):
So that's the only part you're gonna tell me.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
Yeah, okay, so only part you go.
Speaker 5 (07:34):
Get that from my own I mean, I understand, I
kind of get where you're you're getting at. Listen, everybody's
road is different and sometimes straight, and it's gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
Well, no, no, that's not what it is. Because the
road is straight and narrow. That's the only way to
get to Jesus Matthew seven fourteen. But in baseball, I'll
explain later. I'm talking to everyone. Okay, oh a very nice,
very nice.
Speaker 4 (08:01):
But I will say I missed this place so much.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
And you know, when you're young, you can't really this
game that we play, such a high energy game and
life itself, it's a high vibe life. It's moving so fast,
you know, and when you're at the top or you're
considered a superstar all star. Life is coming at you
(08:26):
so fast. Everything is you gotta make quick decisions. You
gotta do this. Sometimes you make decisions off emotions, and
you make irrational decisions, and you can't go back after
you make decisions. And a lot of times as players,
we just want fires to get put out. We want
things to happen fast, right away, right then, in a hurry,
(08:46):
because this is how our life has to be. We
have to make decisions on the court fast. We gotta
move fast. So now we taking this same attitude off
the court. If it don't work, get it out. If
this don't go this way, it's quick as never hold
up because in the game you can't do that. You
can't sit back in the game, and you get twenty
(09:07):
four seconds in life, you get to you you're not
lifing no more.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
So it's a totally different thing. My life is going
so fast. Then.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
I'm a young eighteen year old man. I left at
what twenty sixty six, that's still.
Speaker 5 (09:26):
Young, of course, right now thirty seven right now me too.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
So yeah, like I'm a little jit and life is
coming so fast at me. I'm just like, who do
I talk to shit. I just gotta do this myself.
I don't know so looking back, that's a part of
growing up.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
But unfortunately I grew up in front of millions of
millions of people.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
They can see all of my mistakes, all the good
things that I'm doing, the bad things and there now
they could pass judgments, they can say whatever because of
what they're seeing, but they're not understanding that it takes
a level of growth. Money and fame and fortune do
not come with maturity.
Speaker 4 (10:09):
Just does it.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
I know that, yes, sure you don't. Can't have it
when you're coming in. It takes a process. So a
lot of times we don't give ourselves time to grow,
and the world doesn't either. The world is, hey, you
got money, you got this, you should know this.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
How the hell I wanna know this?
Speaker 3 (10:26):
At eighteen Yeah, I don't even know how to start
a bank account. When I got to the NBA, I'm
gonna know how to handle a franchise, you know what
I'm saying. So I'm just thankful that after playing for
eighteen nineteen years, I still have my mind still mentally strong,
(10:47):
and still have my body intact. So I'm very grateful
about that. So I have my children, which are getting
so much big and that's amazing.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
So what do I took that smile all the way
through your playing career? Still got it? You're going to
get a call. We know you're going to get a call.
Next has got to be Springfield, mass and hopefully somebody
more impactful.
Speaker 5 (11:13):
This is George Springfield from the Springfield.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
But I mean, you took that smile on Dancing with
the Stars, which was a blast, right reality shows. I
mean we've gotten to kind of live through you still
with all this, with this life that you still have, it.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
Just gets us catch us up on what you're up to.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
Now.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
How is life now for Dwight? With that call coming
we expect for the NBA Hall of Fame soon too.
Speaker 4 (11:36):
Oh, life has been like I've been a stay at
home dad. I love it awesome.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
It's so much funning during spring break, even during spring break,
like I literally want to be with my kids all day,
like every day.
Speaker 4 (11:53):
Maybe Daddy, they'd be like, what man's going to be here?
But no.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
Just coaching my kids, like I coached my son's basketball
team every day, watch my daughter do the volleyball thing,
and her in school and stuff like that is just
awesome to be around and just send them grow.
Speaker 4 (12:12):
I remember when they was wang till now they're hey, Dad,
you think I can.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
When your boys get like that? Right, you wanna go
here with you? Wanna go on a date Valentine's Day?
Like all this stuff is happening. I'm like, wow, this
is I'm actually experiencing this and it's a good experience.
And since I started at eighteen and so young, now
my whole goal is to make sure that I always
teach my or show my kids or prepare them for
(12:43):
what's ahead, the things that I didn't know, the things
that really were problems for me when I got to
the NBA. I just try to talk to them about
it so when they get of age, you know the
same things won't happen.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
What do I We can't thank you. You've always been
great to us, and that you've got to go by
your personal experience with someone. And you've been phenomenal to
us every day and that never changed. And I know
both of us right, both of us can can thank you.
Speaker 4 (13:11):
Always been good.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Send me messages, crazy messages. He sent me the crazy messages,
but you know he's he's crazy. But you know we've
had some we have some pretty good talks and uh.
Speaker 1 (13:28):
And I don't know anything.
Speaker 4 (13:29):
I just throw stuff out there. You just throw stuff
out there. I'm very recept but.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
You're recept and you've done a lot, and you've done
a lot for us.
Speaker 4 (13:35):
And we're very appreciable.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
And that's why today it was it was important to
bring you home today. Thank you huge, So congrats again.
Speaker 4 (13:41):
Has been.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
I'll do it for this edition of Magic Pod Squad
with Hall of Famer Dwight.
Speaker 4 (13:47):
I know
