(01:57):
the woman. Bro. Yeah, I don't know, man.

Speaker 4 (01:59):
Like look look the d m V is it's something
man like when you when you grew up there, it's
like it's a competitive It's like it's so competitive like
Baltimore itself. Like I grew up I grew up after
Mellow and Mellow grew up in West Baltimore. I grew
up in the East East, like East East Baltimore, and

(02:21):
it was like always like competitiveness like between us and
then you add DC, you ad d M V Virginia
at all that it's like bruh, Like it was just
it was really it was real struggles, just trying to
trying to make it like just just trying to make
it as a as a player.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
So it was it was. It was dope. You know,
I appreciate that now, you know what I mean. That's
crazy because like when you was growing up like it was,
how does it called it's Dundalk it Maryland.

Speaker 4 (02:49):
Yeah, so I so Dundalk. I grew up in Dundalk. Actually,
let me let me, let me let me get this straight.
So I grew up in all sorts of all parts
of Baltimore because you know what I mean, growing up
like we did, like you're living was you know, uncertain,
you know what I mean. You live here, you stay here,
you stay with this person, stay with that person. And
your mom and your dad involved at this time you speaking, No,

(03:10):
they're not. So my mom and my dad wasn't together,
so like you know, when they weren't together, it was
like were staying here, We're staying there, were staying here.
So Dundalk was the place where outside done that, it
was a place where my grandparents stayed. So that was
the only place that really was like like set for me.

(03:32):
But outside of that, it was like all over the place,
Like East Baltimore. I had family in West Baltimore I
stayed at Like it was all it's all all over
the place.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
If I say, you got a chance to see all
of what it is, yeah, and you I'm talking as
an early age kid. Was they any like folks around
because your father was actually a singer, Yeah, and so
you like off the real you know, we want to
be doing everything like our father. I ain't gonna let
my my father. I don't know. The fastest thing he
told me how to do was probably try to steal something.

(04:04):
But the thing that your father was in your life
was he was a singer and got a chance to
see his you know, his fame and notoriety and that
why didn't that push you into singing?

Speaker 4 (04:15):
Well, my father, my father was, he was he was
in a group early in the seventies. He was in
a group called a spectrum. Actually the song Fancy Drake
Drake sample that was that was their song. A lot
of he been sampled a lot, but he signed he
signed a crazy deal.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
He was like seventeen eighteen.

Speaker 4 (04:35):
Signed it like a slave deal where he can't like
benefit from anything. So I was trying to work on that,
but you know, he left the group. Man, it wasn't
it wasn't easy from there. Like we lived in Brooklyn
at that time. We lived in Brooklyn. I was born there.
We lived in Brooklyn and we moved to Baltimore and
my mother wanted to move back home. But you know,

(04:58):
my father, he did a lot of a lot of
a lot of crazy jobs after that. Everybody thinks, like
the music industry is, it is what it is. But
I saw the the the tough side of the music industry,
not not getting the money from it. And I know
you probably in Zebo, you probably know a lot a
lot about that and you can help guys with that.
But it's like I saw the tough side of the
music industry where it's like yo, he was we were struggling,

(05:19):
like it was, it was nothing. You know, he worked
two three jobs while my parents together. While I've seen it,
you know what I'm saying two three jobs, you know,
come home and go straight back to work, sleep in
three hours.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
Yeah, it was tough. It was tough for us. Mother was.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
Worked at a at a school and yeah, yeah, while
they were together, it was it wasn't it wasn't. It
wasn't the best for us, you know what I mean?

Speaker 1 (05:50):
You so you tell her so? And at what age
did you realize I had the passion for basketball or
were you into other sports? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (06:00):
I played baseball up until like eighth grade. My grandfather
actually was a guy like baseball front. Like, my grandfather
was the guy that actually, like my father was there,
but you know, he was in and out, you know,
doing this thing like you know, like men do. Like
you know, we all know he was in and out. Yeah,
he was in and out, mostly out. But you know
what I'm saying, The person that really molded me was

(06:22):
my grandfather. And he was a baseball guy. And he
was a Baltimore Orioles guy. And I played baseball, So
that was that was my main focus up until like
eighth grade.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
Mm hmm. Eighth grade. I was like six foot so
I was like that ain't gonna make it.

Speaker 4 (06:41):
But you know what I'm saying, but I turned into
a basketball player from there six feet.

Speaker 1 (06:48):
Well, yeah, that's what I'm saying.

Speaker 4 (06:50):
What was so he was you duncan and I was
definitely telling me like he used to throw me in
eighth grade, I was Duncan.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
I was.

Speaker 4 (06:58):
I was like first dunk was in the summer of
seventh to eighth. From there, I went to Dundalk Middle
School because they had a basketball Who I was at
at that time, I was staying with my grandparents that
was in close Dunnak like I said before, Yeah, yeah,
I stayed with them. And then I went to Dundalk,

(07:19):
which which was they had an eighth grade basketball team
and I wanted to play. So I played there and man,
it was like where I figured out where that was
my passion, Like basketball was what it was like, you
know what I mean. I mean a lot of people
don't make that choice. I made the right choice. And
and this is we're here now right talk to me
about Anthony Lewis Man. You got a chance of duty. Yeah,

(07:43):
Anthony Lewis Duty he was so this is this is uh,
this is maybe ninth grade. Duty was like so backstory,
duty is like the guy that that anybody in Baltimore,
East Baltimore the.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
Time where I'm from.

Speaker 4 (08:03):
He would take all the kids and try to like
from from from a lot of guys like je Dixon,
a lot of a lot of guys like yeah, yeah
j d He played like he had the AU team
on the East Coast, Cecil Kirk, which you know I
live by, Like that's that's that's what molded me. Like
they put me Kirk Avenue at the time, you know,

(08:25):
Cecil and Kirk Avenue was like yo, shout out all
the twentieth Street dudes out there, you know what I mean,
Like this is this is this is like you know
what I mean, this is this is like yeah, I
mean you had to you had to lock in, like yo,
you gotta be with somebody to be walking around there
like you know and and yeah yeah yeah, yeah you.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
Know y yeah yeah yeah. On the course yea, yeah,
I played on the course.

Speaker 4 (08:50):
I played on course like those are my people, so
like you know what I mean, and those people that
played with Cecil Kirk with me, you know, it's still
my brothers to this day if you still talk to him.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
But you know, that was that was the time.

Speaker 4 (09:01):
Man Athony Lewis, who was that guy that that had
had to connect. He's always always working trying to make
the best for us guys. And he's he's changed a
lot of lives, man, like for real, Like he he
saved a lot of lives, like a lot of guys.
You know, I don't know where they will be without
him right now.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
You know what I'm saying. That's the word man. I
always admire you.

Speaker 5 (09:21):
Man.

Speaker 1 (09:22):
Got a lot of respectful you give your flash. I
don't want to hear that. Man. Look it's my brother
right here.

Speaker 3 (09:27):
Man, Like you come up in South side Chicago, him
coming up in at East Baltimore, one of the roughest
cities in America. And for you to come out there
and how you discipline, man, that says a lot to
you know, to your mother and to your parents and
how he was raised. You know, kudos to you man.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
For sure. I mean my mother, would you know, shout
out the mom? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know
what y'all knowing, y'all knowing.

Speaker 4 (09:48):
This is this is a different thing about this this podcast,
which'all don't really know.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
Is like, Yo, everybody I'm talking about they know. So
it's like.

Speaker 4 (09:56):
That's why I said it's like a family reunion, you
know what I'm saying. But like my mother, it would
be you know, at the end of the day, she
would she had a van, We had a van, and
she would like for sus Kirk and duty.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
Like she would be like the like the mother for everybody.

Speaker 4 (10:11):
So she would drive us to practice here and practice there,
games head games there. She had you know what I mean,
So like everybody knew her as like I'm riding with
her and right with her.

Speaker 1 (10:19):
You had you had to listen to gospel while I
was in the car rather than that.

Speaker 4 (10:24):
You know, it was it was cool. You know, she
she really took care of us, you know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (10:28):
So getting getting to Eastern take and making that transition
to art fish right to us about that transmit this
is crazy. This is look. Look, look, look, this is crazy.
My brother right here, he's talking like this like come
ony man, crazy, it's man. Look listen, listen, listen. This

(10:54):
is crazy.

Speaker 6 (10:56):
Uh oh we all yeah it was uh yeah yeah,
we we did.

Speaker 4 (11:05):
Uh yeah, So I got. I got So I never
had the grades to like go to like any of
those private schools early, but Eastern Tech was. There was
another school that was recruiting me outside of outside of
where I lived, and we actually moved my mother, she
moved like this is when partly when like the split

(11:28):
with my parents. So we were living by on our own,
like my mother, my mother, and my two sisters and
my sister's daughter. We were all living in a two
bedroom apartment. I slept on the couch, so, you know,
being trying to be the man at the house, like
y'all let them have this whatever. At that point, I

(11:49):
didn't know what the hell and man the house meant,
you know what I'm saying, But I was trying.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
So like.

Speaker 4 (11:54):
We slept in We slept in a two bedroom apartment.
Threaten me and three other women. I let them had
had the rooms. I slept in the couch.

Speaker 1 (12:02):
Easton Tech. I went to school. It was close to
my school. Went there for two years.

Speaker 4 (12:06):
After that, I went to Spailing just because I just
felt like Easton Tech was it was don't get me wrong,
and I don't want to sound crazy, it was just
it wasn't enough discipline for me, you know what I mean?

Speaker 1 (12:19):
You know what I mean.

Speaker 4 (12:19):
It was like I wasn't one of those kids that
could just do it on my own. I had to
have somebody be like, Yo, this is what you need
to do. This is that, this and thatuse over there. No,
I mean it wasn't it wasn't that bad.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
But it was like it wasn't that bad over there.
But it was like it was like, you know what
I mean, I just wouldn't go to school like stuff
like that. I didn't know. I didn't know it was.
It didn't mean like anything to me. You know.

Speaker 4 (12:49):
When I went to the other school, it just it
was like, man, all these kids like, look, my dream
is go to this college.

Speaker 1 (12:54):
I like college, what you're talking about? You know what
I mean? So it just it just it was different.
I went to spat him.

Speaker 3 (13:02):
I got a lot of great history coming about it there. Like, yeah,
asked me, I'll got Hoopers out of there. But who
did you look up to like when you you know,
coming out the city with the owner playing and ship
you know what I mean?

Speaker 4 (13:14):
Well, Sam, obviously he was first one. I want to
you know what I mean, Sam should be a coach somewhere.

Speaker 1 (13:24):
The coach for sure. Just tell somebody that bro a coach.

Speaker 4 (13:28):
That's you know, o G Sam, Like he done been.
He dosn't done everything in this league. I don't understand
why why people don't want.

Speaker 1 (13:35):
To have him own boy man. Sam should be a
coach man, no way, he don't get enough and here
ball he could play. He don't get enough respect.

Speaker 4 (13:45):
So Sam one and obviously Mellow Mellow was well it
was my dult like. Mellow was two three years older
than me, so like he actually, you know how it
is like.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
You you see people like you.

Speaker 4 (13:57):
Chicago had like mad people like you know what I mean,
y'all had man people. Mellow was a guy that was
older that was like yo, that I could really like
reach you know what I'm saying, be like yo, how
do we do this? How do we do that? And
watching him was it really really put me put me
in the right spot.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
I got Hoopers to Josh LB. Yeah you will, my
boy Will Johnson will. Yeah, that's that's d m V.
That's I mean. But you know, I look at all
y'all like that whole area. Just what y'all do? Whatever?
That water difference from B and d C. Yeah, hell yeah,

(14:40):
what's the difference outside of Outside of that, it don't
mean nothing.

Speaker 3 (14:44):
But them niggas don't rock Our niggas don't rock with
DC niggas that straight up no, no, you know what
I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (14:51):
So if it's so, like, let's give content. So if
it's a hooper in d C, that's nice. You you
coming up boom, you hear his name? He at a tournament,
it's up. That's how y'all feeling about that? Can I cuss?

Speaker 4 (15:05):
It's like fuck him, like we're like yo, like like bro,
this is them. I'm going up d C taking ship
like d C was like d C is like we
to Baltimore. DC is super competitive against each other like
we like, Bro, I would have never thought that we Yeah,
you know it's super competitive.

Speaker 1 (15:22):
It shouldn't be. And I'm sitting there, I'm you know, at.

Speaker 4 (15:25):
Our older age, like we want peace, but you know
what i mean, like this at this point it's cool
and I love d C. But growing up, it was
like yo, it's us first them, and you know, I
think that's that's part of what makes us who we are.

Speaker 1 (15:39):
Like you know what I mean? What what when was
that point where it's been like all right, I'm here.
It's about that time because you got to figure around town.
You in high school, you're getting taller. At that point,
who was it any ogs in the neighborhood or was
it anybody keeping you away from the bullshit? And just
like about that part, we want to hit details, y'all,

(16:02):
the real story.

Speaker 4 (16:03):
Yeah, all right, all right, So look we look talking
about cecil Kirk. Look, this is a story I never told.
I never told, but I do it for my family.
This is my brother, so I'll do it for y'all. Look,
we was, uh, we we had practice at cecil Kirk.
One time we was on on Beller Road. Anybody from
Baltimore Nold Bellair Road. I went back to one of

(16:24):
my teammate's house and we had to be like thirteen fourteen.
We went back to the house and he's like, yo,
come on, come upstairs. And we go upstairs and they,
you know what I mean, they cutting up dope, cutting
up dope. So I'm like at that point, I'm like, man, listen,

(16:51):
they getting money, you.

Speaker 1 (16:52):
Know what I mean. So like it's like you know
what I'm saying, I'm like, they getting money.

Speaker 4 (16:56):
I'm like I can even like I can be a
part of I'm asking questions, like, man, that's what's going on?
Like you're thirteen years old, what's going on? Like you know,
what I mean, what you're doing, Like, this is what
we're doing. Like look, look look his mother like downstairs,
she ain't paying us no mind. She probably know what's
going on. She just like, look, you helped me with
the with the bills or whatever something.

Speaker 1 (17:15):
I'm upstairs, I'm like, like, what's going on?

Speaker 4 (17:19):
So look, one of my good friends to this day,
I ain't gonna say his name, but we walked downstairs.

Speaker 1 (17:27):
With with you know what, they was cutting up.

Speaker 4 (17:30):
He was like, yo, let's go right there, like look,
look let's go right there, like.

Speaker 1 (17:34):
You know what I mean.

Speaker 4 (17:35):
And he had somebody he wanted to you know what
I'm saying. And at that point I realized, like, bro,
I can't even go this way or that way.

Speaker 1 (17:44):
You know what I mean?

Speaker 4 (17:44):
And thank god I chose the right way, because you know,
anything could have happened. But you know, shout out to
my boy.

Speaker 1 (17:52):
That's big.

Speaker 3 (17:53):
I got ship the wire around there.

Speaker 1 (17:59):
The question because everybody know in Baltimore, if you ain't
watched the wire, come on, come on bro, stop it
like and so when you say Baltimore and just to
see you hoopers come out like y'all make a noise too,
killing you the mellows and durrants like me. I mean
you and mellow obviously, But I'm just saying that whole area.
I don't know why I look at that as a whole.

(18:19):
I'm glad you.

Speaker 4 (18:20):
No, no, no, no, no, no, it's not. It's not because
outside of it. You know, y'all should think like that
because it is. This is Maryland, like Maryland. But I
feel like, like Baltimore people, we a little arrogant. So
we're like, yo, this is Baltimore. You know what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (18:32):
You know it is right now. And I love Baltimore too.
I've been down there with Sam but Sill. We went
to we want Championship. We went We're gonna do some
work out there too. We're gonna put together I'm talking
about fixing up the community type. Yeah, we should do
that for sure. But no, look, while I was in
I was in Baltimore and I went to Sam said

(18:52):
they gave him the street things of that nature. But Brudy,
you gotta explain to me what's wrong with the English?
Is it any English classes at bottom up? Not Rudy
for real, because I don't know what dude, and you
and you know, you know what I'm talking about, but

(19:13):
it actually it's actually a swag now, folks. But I'm saying,
like you could tell a Baltimore person from anywhere, and
I used to hear out of you a little bit.

Speaker 4 (19:24):
Yeah, but look the story is, Look, I was born
in Brooklyn, so I was there.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
Like look, I had a little bit of a little
bit of both.

Speaker 4 (19:32):
So it's like my accent is a little weird and
my family, like you know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (19:36):
So like but you know when I give my boys,
you know I had dude do two. You know that.
You know what I mean. You know what I mean.

Speaker 4 (19:42):
But it is it is like I think that's why
I said be a little arrogant in Baltimore, Like you
know you're.

Speaker 1 (19:49):
Derek Quinn, Like I'm from Baltimore. I guess you know
what I mean. Like that's what That's just what it is, like, Bro,
it's a lot going on. I love him too. I
love too. I love him too.

Speaker 4 (19:58):
And you know it's just so much going on, so
much to overcome now, bro, Like when you when you
make it, it's like why can't I like what ship?
Like you know what I've been through? Like, yo, yeah,
I'm from Baltimore. Yeah, I'm arrogant. Yeah, yeah, this is
what I've been through. So yeah, I understand everybody that's
that that that that that popped the ship like that,
you know what I mean?

Speaker 1 (20:19):
Talk to us about becoming all American and how did that?
What was your experience and just even knowing that I'm
one of these top guys. Bro, when you stopped filing
out how tall you was then coming? Were you sixteen
coming up? No?

Speaker 4 (20:32):
No, I was like I grew in college. I was
like six seven or something like that. I don't know,
I don't know. Ask the same thing to him, like.

Speaker 1 (20:39):
Look all American right here, brow. Look, I love to
ask these quicks.

Speaker 4 (20:45):
I'ma be honest with you, just something I wouldn't. I
didn't even understand the importance of it.

Speaker 1 (20:51):
Man.

Speaker 3 (20:51):
You know, I want to talk to you about about
I know you one the player of the year in Baltimore,
but in d C too.

Speaker 1 (21:01):
Yeah that's that's tough, bro. Yeah, you know what the
biggest the biggest thing about that is I'm not from
d C. So it's like so I went spalled and
it wasn't like in Severing, it was like County. So
it's in the middle.

Speaker 4 (21:16):
So we played some of the DC teams, but we
played like we were in the Baltimore Cathol League. And
I'm from Baltimore. So it's like I didn't know.

Speaker 1 (21:24):
Anything about the DC thing when I wanted, I didn't
know what was going on. You know what I'm saying.
That was not something hot.

Speaker 4 (21:31):
So they were hot so and honestly, it was like
they had guys. They had Sam and they had Jeff Green. Yeah,
both of both of guys and my brothers and you
know I happened, you know when Player of the Year.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
So they still hot about that. But it's all good.
Like how do you get DC player? I'm sorry, I'm sorry,
but there's a lot of people need to know that though. Bro,
you know what I'm saying, because it's like that that's
that's rare, that ship that's happening on every year. Your basis,
it's like you've got to be one of them special
kind of guys. And that's my question to you.

Speaker 4 (22:05):
You put in perspective though, Bro. Look, look, I don't
think people understand this though. Bro, I'm gonna say this,
and I don't think y'all.

Speaker 1 (22:12):
Even understand this. Bro.

Speaker 4 (22:13):
We in a real fraternity, bro, Hey, but us three
right here the privilege. It's only five thousand of us ever.

Speaker 1 (22:21):
To walk the earth. Bro, That's the fact.

Speaker 4 (22:23):
So I don't think people out there understand that. So
when we talk, bro, y'all listen.

Speaker 1 (22:28):
We know we're talking about because that's and we're about
to go into what we were talking about off air,
and I'm trying to implement this and what we're talking about.
But like that goes to say, like when you say
a statement like that for our kids, we got to answer, Yeah,
I know how to help you, you know, get to

(22:49):
the next stage. I know the efforts that you need
to make to get to this station. I know the
proper diet, I know the proper rest you need to
I know the let's go physical therapy. I know the
terminal knee extensions that you need to do. I know
the back was walking, I know the squads. I know
the right way to help me develop it. And that's

(23:11):
my heart the same way look at us like whatever,
I don't know nothing, Okay, Bo, I've never been a
knockdown shooter. My son know that. Dad, you're not shooting three,
but you've been around make me punch. But that's what

(23:32):
we're going through that. And so when you say that
we can't talk about it if we ain't living. You
see what I'm saying when you say that privileged part,
that that one per fat album and some change part.
I know it's growing. So it's like to the point
like when we get on these podcasts, you you dig
deep into the manset of what it takes to be
a pro. And not only that, this out the mud, Bro,

(23:55):
And the more you talk and the more you're telling
me the struggles and the things that me being as

Speaker 4 (25:04):
It was something like bro I honestly went from not
being noticed to being like one of the top players
in our class, like I never knew, like I never
knew anything.

Speaker 1 (25:15):
Like I went to one camp, went.

Speaker 4 (25:17):
To Nike Camp. I left there. I was top five
in the nation. I never like I was, like I
wouldn't even at the camp had Al Jefferson, Al Jefferson,
LaMarcus Aldrich. I don't know who else in the camp
Nike Camp, I don't remember, but I know who's in

(25:38):
my class, Like you know, two thousand and four one
of the best classes ever.

Speaker 1 (25:42):
We had Rondo my boy. We had LaMarcus Aldrich.

Speaker 4 (25:47):
We had Al Jefferson, we had Josh Smith, we had
Sebastian Telfair, we had Sean Livingston j R. Smith, Dwight Howard,
we had me.

Speaker 1 (25:59):
We had uh who else will some time out? So
why you ain't come out? Why we didn't just come out?
Because because I didn't know anything about it. I was scared.
I didn't know, Bro, all them names you just said
you could compete with, but I didn't know at that point,
Like it was new to me, all this, all this

(26:20):
like I was a camp away from being not noticed.
So I didn't know anything. I wanted to go to college.

Speaker 4 (26:25):
Kyle Lowry was there, Joe Kim, Noah Tyrs, Thomas, Joan
Farmer also like Yo, we was all that class like
we was. We was like we was a big baby.
All these people like you still top three out of.

Speaker 1 (26:46):
I didn't know, but I didn't know, Bro. It was
like it was new to me. I needed I needed
that keeping you to just stay though, Like because obviously
you know two thousand four was like okay, cool, I
can go to see Calhoun, but you could come out
and go to the league. At that year. This is
the point that our viewers ain't understanding. Al Jefferson came out,
went to the league, did the bash came out, went

(27:07):
to the league there? Yeah, but what Smith came out? Yeah?
But know what, know what bro was stopping you?

Speaker 4 (27:13):
What stopped me was was was the fact that me
and myself, like so my mother. I had a conversation
with my mother was like, Yo, what you want to do?
She said, This is her words out her mouth. She said, Rudy,
we even broke for a long time. A couple more
years ain't gonna hurt us. So that was before we
got paid in college. Like now I went out. Yeah,
I mean we've been straight. Question straight, that's another that's

(27:36):
another question. But but like that, that that set me
up to just be patient, you know what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (27:42):
And I personally wasn't ready.

Speaker 4 (27:43):
So like if I would have came out with them, Bro,
we wouldn't be talking about seventeen eighteen years in leeve.

Speaker 1 (27:48):
We'd be talking about four, three or four, you know
what I mean. That's great. I feel the same way, bro.
You know they came so y'all. I feel the same way, y'all.
So y'all say y'all, y'all the experience in college, going
through that experience and y'all with that, y'all glad that
helped y'all career.

Speaker 4 (28:07):
Yeah, it did because that's your first time, that's your
first time being on your own. So I ain't never
like I ain't never been on my own. I had
my family and my friends, I had everybody that was
around at that time. Like I went to college, I
was on my own, like dropped you off, bam. Now,
even thinking about having six million dollars at that time,

(28:29):
it scares me because I know what I'm I'm around.
I know, I know how my father was, I know
I know his vices, and I know what You know
what I'm saying what iut You know what money makes
you be.

Speaker 1 (28:41):
You know what I mean, make it put you around.
So it's like I'm scared.

Speaker 4 (28:44):
Of what would have happened at that point. So I'm
glad I you know where I was and what I
did at that time.

Speaker 1 (28:50):
You know what I mean means, which means that I
gotta ask you this question. So the nil situation, right,
do you feel that's I'm saying the money or at
the same time, come on, getting that look look at
that age. Speak about now to what's the score statement?

Speaker 4 (29:12):
Everybody owes some money, you know, you know everybody, everybody
owes some money. But look it's you know, at the
end of the day, it's like, man, look these kids
are eating, they're maturing at a at a fast paced.

Speaker 1 (29:28):
Do I you know, do I do?

Speaker 4 (29:31):
Do I wish I was you know, twenty years younger,
of course, but you know a lot comes with that.
And I'm not sure you know what, like, bro, life
is a lot easier.

Speaker 1 (29:39):
When you were broke.

Speaker 4 (29:41):
I think we are everybody saying there know that, Like
you know what I'm saying, so like to start and
having the responsibilities at seventeen, bro. Pressure, that's pressure. Bro,
that's pressure, and I mean pressure, that's real pressure. So like,
my hat's off to them kids, Like I want them
to get their money, but I also want to understand,
like you know, when you get it, bro, you know.

Speaker 1 (30:06):
Now now your life changes, you know what I mean.
So it's it's it's different. Then they become the head
of the.

Speaker 4 (30:12):
Household for sure, for sure, for sure, for sure you're
making decisions.

Speaker 1 (30:17):
Now you Hell no, we ain't helping Uncle Charles, Uncle
Charles Burn That up. You know, you gotta get yourself together.
Someone can't be around some Look.

Speaker 4 (30:32):
Look, and a lot of people don't understand, like some
people just can't be around you, whether it's family or not,
if it don't make you comfortable being around you, like
you can't you can't be around you know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (30:42):
No, that's a fact, man. But and at that and
at that time. Now, so you do what two years
at Connecticut And I'm loving this, by the way, No,
I'm loving this right now because you asked me these questions. Bro.
But I know you. I know ye. Well, look all right,

(31:07):
go ahead this time.

Speaker 7 (31:10):
But I know you know, I know you though I
know you're now, I know you're now you know me, man?

Speaker 1 (31:21):
But no, so now look it's draft process, man. And
then you're talking Coach Calhoun. You know what I'm saying,
A legendary coach. I want to give him, Miss Flowers,
you know what I'm saying. I just want to know, like,
was there like a culture shock coming to college? Was
this discipline good for you? Because you say you like
somebody to always keep you in place as far as

(31:43):
you know going in and the growth of who you're
gonna be. But talk to me about Coach Calhoun and
the process of going to the league. Man. Coach Calhoun
was very influential because he he just Bro, he was
he exactly what we needed. Bro.

Speaker 4 (31:58):
Like when you come from not having structure and then like, yo,
you're going to do this or it's going to be consequences.
It's like, Bro, that's exactly what I needed to be
a better pro. Coach is somebody that's like, well, you
know his resume, you know his pedigree, you know what
he about. Like, I don't think I understood it when
I went there, but I found out real quick. You

(32:20):
know what I'm saying, Like he he won the ones man,
and I think he's a lost art. I think we
need more coaches like him.

Speaker 1 (32:27):
You know what I mean? Was he tough nose man,
tough shit man, you just want it. I'm gonna tall
you like this, look look look and this is something
like now at my older age, Like, bro, like why
I let him do that?

Speaker 4 (32:40):
But it's like we were we were in Georgetown. I remember,
I was like coming back home. It's like coas to home.
We were in d C.

Speaker 1 (32:48):
Were playing and I wouldn't I wasn't playing good. Bro.

Speaker 4 (32:53):
He sent me out the game, he said, he said, Rudy,
you're playing like ship pushed me in my stomach, but
he took he took his jacket up so nobody could
see it.

Speaker 1 (33:05):
So I'm like, this motherfucker just pushed me just but
it's like, bro, like.

Speaker 4 (33:17):
It's like, but I respected him enough, and like he
was like when you're on the court, it's like you
expected him to be like that, but off the court,
he was like the best person in the world.

Speaker 1 (33:29):
He got your back, like bro.

Speaker 4 (33:30):
On the campus, like I remember I had I had
parking tickets and you know.

Speaker 1 (33:34):
You know how this cause call your coach.

Speaker 4 (33:36):
Like we were sitting in his office and laugh about
the police talking about I'm gonna call your coach like
he's he was like the best at that as far
as like like he was the first players coach off
the court. On the court, it's like, yo, this is
my is my show. Do what I say. And you
know at seventeen, I.

Speaker 3 (33:57):
Needed that order, you know what I mean saying him
coach lot coach the same way, the same way, Yeah,
just listen to you, like like you said, did you
have coach punch a niggas and grabbing Coach grabb Nigga Jersey.

Speaker 1 (34:13):
Yeah, man, I ain't gonna lie kill. I respect my coach, Recipe,
coach Son, I ain't gonna lie kill. I want honor,
no punch, I want none of that. The Jersey grad
my daddy won around turn out out the shout coach Suton.

(34:43):
But look, well I really want to know where though, Bro,
talk to me about like it was that any other
schools other than Connecticut? Yeah, could you the win somewhere else?
Like with the world see the world know you McDonald's mayor, Yeah,
plenty offs. Yeah, I just want to know what was
on the table.

Speaker 4 (34:59):
So funny story is, Look my other two options were
were three options with Civilianova, Syracuse and Maryland. So like
one one, we played for the same you team. So
one w call me all the time, like, Bro, this
is what you want to be when you will be
mellow called me and this is this is like one

(35:20):
and done mellow calling me. So he was a different
person then, you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
I ain't talk I don't want to talk about that.

Speaker 1 (35:28):
I heard about you talking about that game winning. You
hit on me, Bro, that was I want seven p
shout out seven shout out shout out the mud, you
know what, that's what we are. We had the money. Yeah. Yeah.
So so Mellow called me, was like, man, what's up.

(35:51):
I'm like, like, what's up? Like He's like, yo, this mellow, Mellow,
what's up? Like all right? Cool? Cool cool. He's like, man,
you know they want you out here? Yeah, yeah, Syracuse.

Speaker 4 (36:03):
I'm like, all right, whatever, Like this is I'm getting calls.
You know, this is the time when you get calls
all the time, like.

Speaker 1 (36:09):
Like like it's like, what's up, Like you gotta come
on here, you gotta you know, continue to continue to path.
I'm saying, yeah, whatever.

Speaker 4 (36:18):
But I never like the more he did, the more
I didn't want to go there, you know what I mean.
It's like, bro, if I don't get in a championship,
like I'm I'm a bus.

Speaker 1 (36:28):
Because you got to follow that for yeah, yeah, I'm
from I'm from here.

Speaker 4 (36:31):
I'm going there like we play the same position, Like
they want all that from me, and I didn't want that.
I wanted to I wanted my own story. So you know,
that's the only reason I ain't go there. Connecticut was
they happened to win the championship that year, but it
was like, man, Bro, I'm you know, I was yo.

Speaker 1 (36:48):
That was I was a big fan.

Speaker 4 (36:51):
Should have been Gordon, man, because Ben Gordon was Bruh.
Ben Gordon was him. I ain't gonna lie, Bro.

Speaker 1 (36:58):
He a tough one, fucker, Bro, Ben Gordon. They was
calling Ben Jordan's and Ben Jordan's.

Speaker 4 (37:05):
Ben Jordan's man, Bro, listen, he was one of the
best players I ever seen. I went on campus and
we hooped with him. I said, Bro, look, I love
your game. I told him I want to I want
to come here. I told him that, you know, Bengo,
I was a big fan of Ben Gordon. That was

(37:26):
it right there.

Speaker 1 (37:26):
I was like, man, I'm come coming here. So I
love the fact that you know in your college career,
uh you know, at that point, you know you you
finished up, but you finished up with Jeff Green. That's
another bottle. That's another d m V native rivalry right there.

(37:47):
Help you in any kind of way because I played
with Jeff.

Speaker 4 (37:50):
I mean, but you y'all, I know Joe. Jeff just
a great dude. Jeff like he he just he is
a great dude. But like when we got between them lines, Bro,
it was just like growing up it was like, and
Jeff was another one is guys that nobody really it
was kind of under the radar, radar, but when I
see him, I'm like, yo, six, yeah, this is this

(38:13):
is what it is, Jeff.

Speaker 1 (38:14):
This was mister Jeff was missing the tooth in high school.
Manch ill, don't know, John, Jeff, Look you look at them.

Speaker 6 (38:20):
This is a tooth manless look so much so much Georgetown, Georgeown.

Speaker 1 (38:30):
I ain't know who he was. I'm like, Yo, this
niggas got teeth. We got teeth now, I ain't know,
but yeah, but that you know, Jeff. I love Jeff.
I love you, Bro. That's my that's my family right there,
just like y'all my family. But what was I about
to say about talking about just sharing that award with Jeff? Yeah,

(38:50):
sharing that ward with Jeff.

Speaker 4 (38:52):
But even more than that, bro, Like, like, we all
been been through a lot and been through a lot
with this game. And the more we've been through, the
more we can going back to the kids, the more
we've been through, the more.

Speaker 1 (39:05):
We can bring to them.

Speaker 4 (39:08):
Like I said, it's like, Bro, we play on the
same team, which is different than playing the league.

Speaker 1 (39:13):
Bro. Like, like, Bro, we didn't been through wars we
didn't have been through. We'd all been mad the same
nigga before we had all been you know what I'm saying,
been focused on the next team, cussing each other out
like you come to game. So that makes us closer.

Speaker 4 (39:27):
Than than other people. So like, yeah, I don't think
people realize that.

Speaker 1 (39:34):
You know what I mean. So look specifically in that
in that season, y'all lost George Mason. Yeah, tell me,
tell me what that loss did to you, man?

Speaker 4 (39:46):
Like all y'all like you man, listen, I had dreams
about that bro. Like, honestly, I think that that hurt
my draft stock, which would have changed trajectory of.

Speaker 1 (39:56):
Where I am right Well, maybe not, I don't know. Look,
I appreciate it.

Speaker 4 (39:59):
I'm appreciative everything that I've been through, everything I'm done
because it's going to make my kids better. But you know,
I think that George Mason lost was like something that
nobody expected. It was one of those things that taught
me a real lesson because I you know, I think
we kind of overlooked them. You know, if you think
about the team I had, we had Marcus Williams, it

(40:23):
was our teammate. We had Josh Boom, we had Hilton Armstrong, myself,
Jeff Adrian, which is also a pro. We had a
lot of pros on that team. We was like, man,
we're gonna get George Mason. And they came out there
and beat us, and it was like, man, you know,
from then it was like, bro, you can't you can't

(40:44):
overlook anybody, you know what I mean. That's one of
the things in my life that I always regret, like
losing to them, losing to the Clippers in Game seven.
There was two things that I'm like, man, brou like,
if we just would have got past them like.

Speaker 1 (41:00):
We did lose to the Clippers game, We're gonna jump
that fast. We're gonna get to that. I want to
check Nick young guy. He said he had said something
we was on. They show what he said. Man, Look
look he brought it up. He said, yeah, you don't
remember we came in Memphis from man. But you know,
just a man, a couple of threes, Man, nobody would

(41:22):
worry about you.

Speaker 5 (41:23):
Man.

Speaker 1 (41:23):
Look, look was it was closing out. That's all. Get
a couple of close out through the ball. We closed
out and you hit a three. That's all about one
and two love love Nick Waggy Love. My god, I
can't front that that is.

Speaker 4 (41:39):
Swaggy Slaggy Pe, Swaggy Pe, you know what I mean.
But you know, we just missed a couple of clothes.
Outs man wasn't and I scout reported wasn't. There wasn't
no Swaggy p You know it was Chris Paul, Blake Griffin.
I got a look the story with him and Blake Griffin.

Speaker 1 (41:55):
I'll tell you that, you know, you know, listen, this
is what I wanted to ask you, bro. So look
right when you left early whatever, right and hold on,
let me stretch it and scratch it. Did you feel
like it was unfinished business to go to the league? Like?

(42:18):
Or like did you want to stay in college? Like?
How did that process go?

Speaker 4 (42:22):
That was one of those situations where I felt like
the business made me make a decision that I really
didn't want to make.

Speaker 1 (42:29):
Because you was final listening player of the year, right.
I think, honestly, I think I should. Personally I think
I should. Personally, I think I should have stayed another year,
another year.

Speaker 4 (42:38):
But with the how the business go, it's like you
had to leave, you know what I'm saying because of
everything you know what could have happened.

Speaker 1 (42:45):
You could have heard got hurt. Whatever stock could have
went down.

Speaker 4 (42:48):
Look, look we lost George Mason. I feel like my
stock went down. So it's like anything could have could
have messed it up.

Speaker 1 (42:54):
And you know, you know how this league is, man,
it can it can help you, it can hurt you.
You know what I'm saying with the perception of what
people say, and no stuff can hurt you. So who
was in your head at that time then like to
like be like brou like, yeah, you do it. You
didn't have your best at the best, but you should
go like like because a lot of motherfuckers would be like, man,
I played like ship the last game. Hell yeah, I'm

(43:15):
coming back now.

Speaker 4 (43:16):
I played good the last game though, So that's like
Coach Calhoun told me.

Speaker 1 (43:19):
He was like, so, I'm gonna tell you something of
my mother. Man.

Speaker 4 (43:22):
My mother, she love her to death, man, but she
has she has no idea about basketball at or anything
about it. She did love a baby. So she was like,
I sold I had a scholarship to the Canneticut. She
was like, okay, okay, you're going you're going.

Speaker 1 (43:36):
For what I pay. I said, you ain't gotta pay nothing,
you know what I mean. She didn't know I get
a full scholarship. So I'm there.

Speaker 4 (43:43):
She was like, man, I want you to get your degree.
I'm like going into it. I'm like, I'm all American.
I'm not staying at school for all the time.

Speaker 1 (43:50):
You know what I'm saying, I'm getting to the wed
the chicken. Right. She never knew anything.

Speaker 4 (43:56):
So when I said I was going to leave going
to the league, she wasn't really ready or understood what
that meant. So like coach Can, June talked to her
and said, look, he has to go. You know what
I'm saying, Like right now, he has to go. So
for that, you know, Coach Can. No matter what we did,
Coach Con came to me and came to her. It

(44:17):
was like, Yo, this is your time.

Speaker 1 (44:18):
You got to go. So Rudy talked to us about
man the drive process and picking the agent and understanding, like,
all right, I got access to get to the green room.
So what happened was.

Speaker 4 (44:33):
My first after my first year in college, I went
to Jordan camp and I met Chris Paul. It might
be I don't know if it was dinner wasn't, but
you know, me and Chris ended up being you know, clicking,
you know, that's my guy. And to this day, like
Chris Paul, you know what I'm saying, my guy?

Speaker 1 (44:53):
Yeah God, And we got to go to this game
and mymphics on the farewell he say, fail wearing this year?
This is this. Yeah, we're going, we are we are,
we are there. But know what fuck him for? Uh?
You know that game seven? You know what I mean?

(45:14):
Because he and I tell you I still think about that.
I still think about that, you know what I mean.

Speaker 4 (45:19):
But other than that, you know, Christal my guy, and
I was like, man, I saw the trajectory I had
the year before, and I signed with the agency agent
that he had. You know, I met a you know,
a lot, you know, but you know, back then it
was it was a dirty game. You know people you know,
I get you this, get you that, and come in
and find out a lot of people saying I can
do this, do that, do that that, and this person

(45:40):
trying to get in. But you know, I just you know,
I learned a lot on my own, just like in life,
you know what I mean. We we you know, we
got this Get out of the Mud podcast, Like Bro,
you had to figure out on your own, Like life,
how to be a man, how to do a.

Speaker 1 (45:56):
Lot of things, you have to just figure out on
your own. So I figured out on my own. I'm like, yo,
I'm gonna sign with this people, these people, I'm gonna
figure it out.

Speaker 4 (46:05):
And you know that was that was it. It was
nothing other than just me making my own decision. Did
they did they guarantee you a top spot in the draft?
Was it like elaborate, like let us know, like they
I mean, ain't sixteen, bro.

Speaker 1 (46:20):
It's like, all right, you know, I ain't bro. I'm
six nine, bro.

Speaker 6 (46:23):
I right, all right, whatever if.

Speaker 1 (46:29):
You say I'm sixteen, that mean z line because he's
supposed to be sixteen, I'm six eight, six eight and
a half with shoes on, alright. Just he's just trying
to put you know, extras on it because been lying
about NBA heights for years. But this man, man, that's
making it worse because he's doing all that. These people.
He's six seven, you know what I mean? You know,

(46:51):
but you go you got to put that what they
call barbecue sauce on the wing. Yeah, I mean no,
I mean, I just they never they never said anything.

Speaker 4 (47:02):
But it was just like I went on my when
I went on my workouts, I just figured it out,
like that was a year of what's his name, Adam Morrison. Morrison,
he had the year. Yeah, So we were we were.

Speaker 1 (47:16):
It was Adam Me so all my workouts, me Adam
Morrison and Brandon Roy. Shout out to Brandon Roy. Brandon Roy. Yeah,
Brandon Roy, Brandon Roy man man went three two three three, Yeah,
Brandon Roy was Brandon Roy was a dog man.

Speaker 3 (47:35):
When he got injured, probably wanted the man listening to him.
We talked level with Kobe in the same category.

Speaker 1 (47:40):
We're talking great Brandon Roy. Yeah, yeah, I believe it.
Brot Yeah, came in what you got drafted together? Yeah,
we did. We did.

Speaker 4 (47:51):
So it was me Adam Roy and Adam Adam Morrison,
Brandon Roy. We was in every every workout together. You know,
I'm gonna let look, you gotta get branded Roy on here.
You can tell that story because I am tell the story.

Speaker 1 (48:04):
Look look, look look in the time with a flash
like yeah, yeah, yeah, y'all gotta have more hand because
he is bro, you know, be Roy. Bro. He was great. Bro.
We were battling, like really battling, and like we were
just like, you know, wherever Addam Morris and that, because
you know he had he had the ship, he won
Player the Year and everything. We were searching like what

(48:24):
he had. I was hunting. So that's a hunting is
the thing on the basketball like you're looking for the
top nig. Yeah so you hear that. Yeah, yeah, you're
gonna be looking for your buddy. Yeah. Never don't. Never
think it's over. They were looking for you more than anything,
because you know what I mean, you got you work.

(48:45):
You're a random the NBA. I'm telling that makes it
the thing though, Rudy and not. And it's funny that
you say that because at that time, it's like, damn
the highlights that if you pull up a highlight table
Rudy Gay and you pull up a highlight tapeer of
Adam Morrison and those other guys, it's like, bro, you

(49:06):
going number one, set through that set, through that draft
process because you knew you was better than a lot
of them guys.

Speaker 4 (49:12):
I mean, but it's you know, looking back at it,
it's like, man, it is what it is. People think
what they think, but look at my mind mind state
at that time, it's like, bro, I'm a I'm an
attack all of them.

Speaker 1 (49:22):
I'm gonna go at it. So you didn't. You didn't,
did you feel the type of I did? Yeah, but
I dropped. I went. I went to eight and I loved. Look.
I wouldn't. I wouldn't have any other way.

Speaker 4 (49:34):
Because I end up in Memphis and the city of
Memphis has done so many things for me. Man, Bros.
It made me the man I am, and I'm so
happy I went there. I met the people I am,
met y'all real ones like I can't, I don't. I
don't like bro, it's really my whole situation is molded,
not just my.

Speaker 1 (49:54):
Career, but who I am today.

Speaker 4 (49:55):
Bro Like like y'all understand being around y'all bro like
it really really really changed my whole perspective of life.
All I knew was one thing and y'all like all
y'all different in different ways, but I learned things from y'all,
like bro like.

Speaker 1 (50:10):
Y'all really y'all really big bros, like for real, it
was love y' bros.

Speaker 3 (50:16):
And speaking of that, I just want to ask you
a question because I know a lot of people think
Steven H. Smith had said something about players scared to
come to me understand. Mm hmm, it's dangerous in other cities,
in certain parts. I know you got drafted by Like,
I just feelt like that was out of context because
I don't.

Speaker 1 (50:35):
That that's bullshit. Look, bro, that's that's real bullshit. Know why,
Because it's only danger if if you want to be
a part of it, Like bro, shit happened to people
that is in it. Like bro, if you like, if
you a drug dealer, Bro, it's ship that comes with
being a drug dealer.

Speaker 4 (50:50):
If you a killer, brouh that ship to come and
being a killer. Bro, you gotta watch it back. So
you know, we basketball players, Bro, you might have friends
do all that stuff, but that's that's that's that's.

Speaker 1 (51:01):
What we do. Like Bro, why should I walk around
being scared if I ain't. That's not my life, you
know what I mean? I agree with you, and you
know obviously playing you're gonna go to practice at most
right you're gonna leave practice. You're gonna go home be
your kids, or whether you're a young nigga, you're gonna
be on call of duty. Now you're on some ship.

Speaker 6 (51:24):
So now we was in the streets Sphis. Smiphis love
us man, they love us, man, so tell for real.

Speaker 3 (51:33):
So that's why when he said this ship love us man,
you want to play, let's speak to the Rudy Gage,
the Mike Conley's You know what I mean when he
folks protected them, protected, protect their players.

Speaker 1 (51:46):
You know what I mean. That's a fact. That's a fact. Look,
I'd have been out from they all protected. I have
been out with I'd have been out with z Bo.
He brought his dog to the building, so I know
what time of it. Bring my dog black Russian. He
brought passion.

Speaker 3 (52:02):
You know what I'm saying, Like I got.

Speaker 1 (52:08):
Some one.

Speaker 6 (52:12):
Dog man, Man, Man, you never know. I told y'all man, Look,
it's the family reunion. Family, the family reunion.

Speaker 1 (52:26):
Bro. I know, I know, y'all man. Some fun I know,
y'all man, that's funny. Meanwhile, when you got the Memphis Man,
you get drafted. Man. Did you go to the green room? Yes,
speaking about the green room, Bro, what's that experience? Are
you on edge? Like fly? Butterfly? Yo? You was in

(52:47):
the green You wasn't, man like a couple of cases us.

Speaker 4 (53:01):
Hey, Yeah, I was in there, all right, I was
in there, Bro. It was just like, Man, it's just
like a dream, like you're in there, you wear your suit,
wish everybody make fun of them.

Speaker 1 (53:11):
Now, you know what I'm saying. Your big she was terrible.
It was l V l V I remember LVB. Yeah,
they robbed me. Come me some checks. I look crazy,
I look crazy. Bro, that's my suit. Oh your suit?
We got the rooty gate man. Leave me alone. Man, Hey,

(53:39):
I know because I've got that paper dream I'm living.
I'm living first day of life. No more McDonald's ten
for ten. We want to McDonald's get ten ten cheeseburgers
ten dollars. You remember that, y'all had that look you
bringing us back in memory. Ten cheese very ten dollars.

(54:00):
And I hate that. I hate that. I said on
that for a week and that's big. And Stern was
it was Stern. It was Stern. Yeah, it's crazy. We're old,
bro Stern. That's it. People don't even know Stern was
a real one though. You always hear that back in
the day. I used to hear like yo, like he
was strictly for his owners.

Speaker 4 (54:20):
Yeah, yo, I watched, I watched, I watched y'all your podcast.
When the miles on, he said, he grabbed gradated stern
by the back of the head.

Speaker 1 (54:31):
I'm like, why do you do that?

Speaker 3 (54:35):
You know folks you know man, you know folks hand
why you do that?

Speaker 7 (54:41):
Man?

Speaker 1 (54:42):
That was hilarious, bro Like he he was like, hey,
you got out the hood man. Try he grabbed back
the man head the miles the best. Bro. So coming
to myth, how was your rookie year? Like, how did
it go? So? My rookie year was pile. They just
won the I think it was the World Cup or whatever.

(55:05):
The Spains won the World Cup. He broke his foot.

Speaker 4 (55:08):
So the year before they went to the playoffs for
the first time and he had broke his foot in
the World Cup. So you know he was our guy, Like,
he was our main guy. So he came back, uh
and couldn't play, So you know we were terrible.

Speaker 1 (55:23):
We had Biggie Love Biggie shout out to Georgia Tech
that like Biggie Biggie a real one. Bro. Man love
Biggie Love. He brought me a suit man, Hey man,
hey man, he want Yeah, he wanted the flies. O
GI's I ever had?

Speaker 4 (55:41):
We had uh Eddie Jones, Chucky Atkins, Chuckie Atkins. That's
my That's that's my guy right there, Chucky Adkins.

Speaker 1 (55:50):
We had Mike Miller. We had Mike with a couple
of guys. But it's just onen't like, you know, it's
just like they had made so not saying that we
couldn't be good. It's just we had built the team
around pal Gasaw so much, and then Mike Vittello was
the coach. So it's like without Pole, it's like, you

(56:12):
know what I mean, I was a guy. So he
was out for most of the season. He came back
and played. We just we just weren't good enough. We
weren't good at all. So it's like my rookie year.
We played.

Speaker 4 (56:27):
After the All Star break, they let Eddie Jones gow
has played the same position as me, and I was
just they just dow me in the fire bam, like
go ahead, and I was, you know, I was probably
I was making a lot of mistakes. I was going
out there just playing basketball, and you know, just being
around all those guys have been around the league like that,

(56:48):
and going out there and just giving the ball and
just like make plays and do all these things.

Speaker 1 (56:52):
It really taught me a lot because.

Speaker 4 (56:55):
I don't think a lot of people don't get that
kind of kind of opportunity, and you know, I feel
like I was blessed to have that, you know what
I'm saying, especially with the ogs.

Speaker 1 (57:02):
I had, because you just round about a bunch of
O G.

Speaker 4 (57:05):
Yeah, Biggie Smalls man, that's my guy to this day.
Man shout out to Georgia tech man. Hey, yo, so
who busts your ass that frist year Yo?

Speaker 1 (57:14):
You. I don't think everybody knows it's Tam Mac did
t Mac bro t Max bust Look, no, I don't know.
Hold on you because you fit proto. No. I love
and I just had this on on. This might be
too early, but we had talked to him about this recently.
Talk about this recently because I was drafted by Houston. Houston.

(57:38):
That is how it happened. That's how it happened. Yeah. Yeah,
he got traded and they traded me for Shane Baddier. Shane.

Speaker 4 (57:46):
Yeah, shut up, shout out Shane. Yeah, shout out Shane.
They traded me for him. And I don't know, I
really want like, I wouldn't have minded everybody love Hey,
you're not like you not, But it was one of
those things he was like, yo, play behind Team Mac.

Speaker 1 (58:04):
I grew up watching teammate. I love t Mac. You
know what I'm saying. You know what I mean. I
always like, that's what that's my prototype with who I
wanted to be. And they traded me to Memphis from there,
so I didn't know what that was. But so I
was like, I kind of felt like it was one
of those things like tam Max because this is what
the time when he had the back issues, when he
was like not not himself, but bro, when he got

(58:25):
on that court, I'm like, Bro, I don't see no
back of trouble. He didn't miss this must be personal.
I didn't. I thought it was personal, but you know,
you know, it taught me a big lesson, Like, Bro,
like you in here now, you can't have no, you
can't have like your favorite player. It's your favorite player,

(58:47):
no more like yeah, none of that, None of that, bro.
This is this is business, bro, And that taught me
a real lesson, right. And and that's crazy you say that,
because I mean, had you stayed that, that wouldn't have
been a bad option to think about how to.

Speaker 4 (59:08):
Man me like I would have loved to play behind
team learned from him, learn or from there just like
Team Mac did it like he was with his cousin,
like he was.

Speaker 1 (59:16):
There and then with somewhere else. But I would have
loved to you know, obviously I love Memphis and love
what they do. Ut to Jerry West rest in peace.
Jerry was because he traded for me, But.

Speaker 4 (59:30):
Would have been a great yeah, great, great you to have.
I don't I don't know what kind of mentor he
has been, but I love watching him.

Speaker 1 (59:36):
You know what I mean, because he is saying a
lot of wild ship right now. But listen, talk to
us about you know, your second year you started leading
us and scoring, you know, set the franchise record of it.
Uh that that you know, what I'm saying was that
it was there any like like moment in your mind
to say that I could possibly be one of the

(59:57):
top casts in the league. That that that that enhanced
at the.

Speaker 4 (01:00:00):
That point, it was like the second half of the season,
it was just like they let me rock and that
the first no that my first my rookie year let
me they let me rock.

Speaker 1 (01:00:12):
And it was like that second year it was just
like it was like they had traded Pow. Pow wanted
to trade. Actually, of course he wanted he wanted to
trade and he wanted to Yeah, but it was like
one of those situations where it's like what what do
you want to do, Like what do you want to
do with your career?

Speaker 4 (01:00:33):
And they let me and that that plus they just
let me rock, you know what I mean. We had
no expectations. We just wanted to play.

Speaker 1 (01:00:45):
We did that Me, Kyle h, Terrence Knsey at the time,
who else. We just we just played basketball. Were just
trying to play basketball, Bro, and I just wanted to see.
I was really just throwing ship the wall, see if
it sticks, you know what I'm saying, trying to figure
figure this game out because like I told you, even

(01:01:06):
from high school, it's like one of those things where
I never expected any of this, you know what I'm saying.
So I had no expectations or anything. Everything new to me, Bro,
Like I'm like, I didn't. I didn't.

Speaker 4 (01:01:17):
I'm grateful for every everything, everything that happens. So it
was like, BRO, let me just go out there and
it's like there's two people you had, the people that
expect things that you had, people that appreciate things. I
was just appreciating opportunity, Bro, and I just you know,
people you know understood my ability and I just went
out there and did it.

Speaker 1 (01:01:40):
Second year. That year, I think it was ivory. When
did you switch to coach Allen's third year? Yeah, I
think it's my third year. Look, look, how was that
process because it was hilarious and when I say out
the move while we talked to you, not only did
you make it out the mud, but noticing the business.

(01:02:03):
You understand the business. Yeah, because you maximizing dollar. Let's
not get that with the bank roll is there and
play years and equal so you can't say nothing about
but talk to us that ain't nothing, ain't nothing. Get better.
What's going on now? Talk to us about to us
about like now like under the certain coaching structures to

(01:02:27):
where you always you just talked about structure and how
discipline play a big party. Talk to us about what
challenges coach Hollins gave you going into.

Speaker 4 (01:02:36):
So we we were so when we was playing like earlyer,
we like we was They coached they fired coach Overony
during the season.

Speaker 1 (01:02:47):
Uh, they hired they hired Lionel during the middle of
the season. He was an assistant coach at attack. Correct
he was no, he was he was at home. He
was assistant coach the year before, so he was at
home and they just hired him. I don't know. I
think I think it was Jerry. Jerry West might have

(01:03:09):
hired him. I don't know.

Speaker 4 (01:03:10):
That might have been his last hire before he left.
And it was like, I think he's gonna get the job.

Speaker 1 (01:03:16):
I think he got a job. They talked to me,
but like, I think this guy's gonna get job. Okay,
he got the job. So I got a car. He's going,
we're going to hire this guy. I said, Okay, I know,
I know. Train you know what I mean. Train came
in was a totally different person, like, Yo, I'm like, yo,
we was we was just shoot around before we was
a suit around. Before he'd be sleep, he'd be he's

(01:03:38):
getting all the coach. He's like, hell no, this is
what we doing. I'm like, god, damn, I thought we
was good. Train came in, bruh, look go in the
middle of the season. Train he said, Yo, we're doing
two of days. I said, Yo, it's February. What we're doing.
I'm about to call the MVP A on your ass?

(01:04:01):
I said, somebody called him on said yes, yes, yes,
I did.

Speaker 4 (01:04:10):
I called it on the coach coach train we need
you on here, man, but train train, train, Bro. He
just like he like, he said, y'all out of shape,
y'all suck, y'all out of shape, y'all tired.

Speaker 1 (01:04:23):
You think we're gonna look, we might win, we might
win to lose games, but we're gonna be in shape.
You can't do nothing but respect that. You know what
I'm saying, I'm still young, I'm running. You know the
old g's on the team, they probably run. Yeah, I run.
At that point, I don't care. I'm like whatever. But yeah,
he was like, yeah, this is what we're doing, and

(01:04:45):
you know it's trained. Y'all know train. So meanwhile, all right,
what year that is? What year that is? Though? To
keep back on track, what year that is? You say?
You just just say it was three? Was it was No. Three?

Speaker 4 (01:05:00):
And we had I had for a whole year. Then
after that we fired him. Next year wait on nine,
Yeah yeah, I might be wait or I don't know.
Maybe I don't know, but the change was drastic. The
thing about it when we when they hid trained, it
was like, bro, he he was Memphis, Like you know

(01:05:22):
what I'm saying, Like hard nose like I don't give
a fuck about nothing, blue collar like brouh like whatever.
It was like, bro, this is Train, Like he could
come in here, like, bro, he'll fight a player. Y'all know,
y'all know, yeah, y'all know the situations like he get

(01:05:43):
into a little player whatever, like.

Speaker 1 (01:05:45):
Like we needed that at that time. Bro.

Speaker 4 (01:05:48):
So like he don't get enough respect about changing his
thinging around. Like it started with train, you know what
I'm saying. I was there from the beginning, but it
started with Train. Like Train came in and was like,
funk that you're going. You're going whatever it is, Like
he'll come at you.

Speaker 1 (01:06:04):
He come at me.

Speaker 4 (01:06:06):
I remember time he kicked me out of practice. Pig
had me coming to his room like and we talk
about it like he'll cut you out, y'all getting into it.

Speaker 1 (01:06:15):
It'll be whatever you tell me? What the are you
doing to you? Like yeah, I couldn't shoot what like yeah,
they not even fucking.

Speaker 6 (01:06:25):
Guarding you, like god damn. Like he'd be like out
there doing your doing this, doing that.

Speaker 1 (01:06:35):
Like see a lot of people don't know like you got.
It's a certain kind of texture you gotta have to
even take this ship. You see what I'm saying. Yeah,
they're not doing that no more like certain kids they'll
start running like dude ran off of Friday Friday. They

(01:06:55):
start running like that. But us, we took it like
I'm gonna show. Yeah, but you know we were walking
in there, but like training to walk out and be like, man,
look I got it. I got passed the ball today.

Speaker 4 (01:07:06):
Man, trains on my ass, or like look look look man,
I got hit some shots.

Speaker 1 (01:07:09):
Trains on my ass or huh, I didn't think that
what you mean? I thought it was a shot. You
never like motherfucker playing with me. I'd be like, I'll
be doing this, Rudie, you got three.

Speaker 3 (01:07:23):
Motherfuckers on your many can jump over the really Georgian staff.

Speaker 1 (01:07:28):
I say that, bad bad, speaking the context before before that,
My bad, my bad, bad. Hey man, football season is
officially here. Y'all already know who we're walking with. Prass
Picks the Daily Fantasy. Make sure y'all head over the

(01:07:51):
prass Picks right now. Download the app and use the
promo code mud. It's week one, baby, I know everyone
is excited. So let's get to my pick. Let's start
out of the three oh five Tyreek here more on
combined rushing and receiving touchdown. Sa Kuan had a record
year and that is it stopped. Easy pick more on

(01:08:12):
combined rushing and receiving touchdowns. Not really a Dallas fan,
but let's go more on passing yards for dak We're
gonna end off with three easy quarterback picks for you,
Patrick Maoms, Jayalen Hurts, and Jaden Dalliels more on passing touchdown.
That's the first week of NFL Picks with George truly
first team. So make sure y'all head over the Prizz

(01:08:34):
Pick download the app and use the promo code mud
Prizz Picks. Where your game? What year was it? When
when you got to introduce to Marcus All? So Mike
came first or Mark came first? One? I want to
ask because I don't know. I'm speaking now. That's why
I did my journalism shit, because I don't know who
came first. Came first? Mike came first? Nothing that came

(01:08:55):
the same year, same year. Yeah, so Mike was Mike
was the third pick, right? You was? You was the
first one there it did and then who I don't
know who came first? So look, look, I was the
first one that I and Mike came two years later
then no, no, no, OJ came to yeah after the
year after that. But Mark came in the trade with Powell.

(01:09:18):
So they they they when they traded, they got the
rights to Mark. So when that was so okay? So
you was there when the when, the when the Lowry
and Connley. Bro. We was just talking about that, bro,
So listen to the Mike Conley and and Lowry situation.
Can yes, can I say something about that? Then Mark came.

(01:09:40):
Can I talk about that first experience? Yes?

Speaker 4 (01:09:42):
Yes, so so so look look, look, bro, that's the
most competitive ship I ever seen in my life between
Mike Conley, two lottery point guard, two lottery point guards,
Mike Conley and Kyle Lowry, those two great point guards.

Speaker 1 (01:09:56):
That's still playing to this day. Which who keys to? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (01:09:59):
Who and get the keys to? You know what I'm
saying that what had happened has shaped both of their careers.

Speaker 1 (01:10:09):
You know what I'm saying. I like that because Kyle
Lowry is a dog, right, but I don't know if
he's that kind of dog without being put in that situation,
put in that situation being the second fiddle to Mike Conley.
You know what I'm saying. You know what I'm saying,
like some real ship, so like everything that happens is

(01:10:31):
for a reason, like this is Mike. Look, Kyle Lowry
is a Hall of Famer. You know what I'm saying.
Did you see all this beforehand? I'm no conson middle school,
So did you like, did you see all this beforehand?
That's all I'm asking. Did you see how great these
guys can be? Because Mike fin get his journey retiring
and he should and he should and he should about

(01:10:54):
he about to have a statue in Toronto? They need
as they should. Did you see this? That's all mas?

Speaker 4 (01:11:01):
No, I didn't see that, But that's what I'm saying, Like, Yo,
that situation right there, molded that because there's none of
that without Like let's say Kyle was.

Speaker 1 (01:11:12):
Coyle's in my class, Mike is.

Speaker 4 (01:11:13):
A year after us. So let's say they gave the
job to Kyle. I don't know if he would have
been as a successful Yeah, I don't know if he'd
been on the edge like he is right now, if
he if if Mike didn't take his spot with.

Speaker 1 (01:11:26):
You're saying playing with that chip on the shoulder, and
I promise of the god. Bro. I'm telling you right now,
Kyle Larry, I confront Bro the competitor. He was like,
I'm talking from leaving Memphis, I saw how he played
us every time we played. Yeah, he hated Chip on
the shoulder. Like I'm saying, this motherfucker fouled me hard
as hell. Like he taking charges. Charges, he's taking charges.

(01:11:50):
I'm talking about he doing the little things. And then
it'll be times where I look up on the on
our scout report. Now we have come on out the mud,
but I look at him on the scattery reporting, I'm like, man,
this fuck just averaging twenty some points a game before
he got touch. Then he gets to us. He wanted

(01:12:10):
to get ten rebounds, you want to get fast steals.
He won't get eight to six. K Lo is a
dog man. He always been a dog He always be like,
y'all do whatever it takes, bruh. And and you know,
I don't know, Like obviously when you when you got
an organization, you gotta pick one. But like it's one

(01:12:30):
of those.

Speaker 4 (01:12:30):
Things like you got too great point guards, Like yo,
y'all did a great job of picking the best availables.

Speaker 1 (01:12:37):
Like I don't I don't. I mean, I'd hate to
be in that position to pick one, you know, Mike
Conley or or or Kyle Lowry. You know what I'm saying.
But you know everything that happened, form what happened, what's
what's here? Now? You know what I mean. We can't
go we can't go too far without giving them folks
they you know, that's how I man a man. I know. Yeah,

(01:12:59):
so with thing giving flowers. You know, we got a
big shot. Chris Waller, Chris Wallace. He traded me too, though,
Hold on, time out. We ain't gonna talk about the look.
Don't come on after mod and not talk about the process. Now,
tell me gave me that bankro He gave it Bankroro.

(01:13:26):
Chris Waller. You know obviously, man, And I want to
say this wrong right here? Bro? And you know obviously man.
You know I've been on plenty podcasts talking about how
to becoming a TA. You know what I'm saying, And
you know I want to you know, say truly you
know what I'm saying. From the day I met you, Bro,
I always looked at you as like one of the elites.

(01:13:48):
You know, I never even till this day, I still
look at you like elite and the fact that it
didn't mesh as well as we thought it should. I
thought your spirit through at all, you always stayed Chrisy.
You always stayed that you like like when you got hurt.
Let's just say, when you got hurt, you always kept
that man set up. You know what, these my guys,

(01:14:12):
and that's what I always loved about you. I mean,
even it be off the camera shit that I'd be
talking about, Like, Bro, you told me my first real watch,
I was wearing a lot of Mavado for you know
what I'm saying. I was going, Hey, I was wearing
a lot of Man, my Man, my first Frank Mule.
You know what I'm saying. I'm just saying, it's just
a lot that build up in you that you know

(01:14:32):
what I'm saying That I honored my cherished and I
truly believe that had you not got hurt, Bro, we
don't want a championship, Bro, And I don't want to
say that, Yeah yeah, grand City became Grand City. I
want to say this in front of the world, Bro,
that had you not got hurt, Bro, you have helped
us get over to him because what we was missing
we had postplate A plus. Yeah, we had point guard

(01:14:54):
A plus, we had bench, we had lockdown defense. Think
we was missing? Missing was that prolific, proto type guy
who you is? You see what I'm saying and it
hurt me. Tell like shit like I ain't gonna lie
when you got traded. Bro, it took me for about
like I want to say about like a good week
or so to be like why the fuck did that

(01:15:16):
make sense? Yeah? But once you realize the business and
shit of it of it all, you understand motherfucks trying
to go up on a luxury tax. We ain't No,
we ain't no big high market team. We can't afford
to pay doubles. You understand it. But most importantly, you
got a chance to feed your family. You got your bag,
which is what we ultimately play for. Take our family
and Bro, you a legend. I don't want you to

(01:15:36):
ever think that, Bro. Bro every I'm talking about every day.
Bro that I promise you. Bro, Like from the first
day I met you, like I told you, I say, Bro,
you just as good as Paul Pierce. What I say
about bro, he here twenty ten nigga Like like like ticket,
I say, Mike Conley sees the flow just like Ron Though.
You feel what I'm saying and I'm saying, said you

(01:15:57):
remember that we were going to commercial me and you,
Pepe Crannic, I say, Bro, I promise you, Bro, I'm
gonna be the gap. Bro. Ain't nobody gonna be posting
us up? Yeah, I got the last five minuteses on me.
Let oh Jace go all day, you sco all day,
so both gonna do him, Spang gonna do him, Gonna
see it. I just want to come stop ship and
on my mom. You know what you told me? What

(01:16:19):
I tell you? Man? Yeah, that sound good, man. I'm
asking about twenty five game. I'm gonna ask me about
twenty five game. Yeah, man, that should put us in
the right position. Man, we good, he said, he said,
what's your quotes on the next commercial break? I was saying, Oh,
manig mom, I love that. No, look, really, this ain't nothing.

(01:16:43):
This ain't no. I'm saying. This just showed me how
much confidence you got you bro. Look, look, I'm gonna
tell y'all this. I tell y'all this man like.

Speaker 4 (01:16:56):
As far as uh like basketball and just knowing and
just being a part of like a real real brotherhood.
There's no other situation in my life other than being
with that Memphis team. You know what I'm saying. And
Tony like, Yo, Bro, I don't think you obviously, Bro.

(01:17:20):
People people love you, especially in the city.

Speaker 1 (01:17:22):
Bro.

Speaker 4 (01:17:22):
Bro, But like as far as preparation, respecting the opponent,
and this is something that I wasn't really good at.

Speaker 1 (01:17:33):
Bro.

Speaker 4 (01:17:33):
I went out there and just tried to go out
there and just play whatever I thought. Look, whatever, I'm
gonna go get it whatever, But preparation for your teammate,
I mean for the next team. And Bro, there's no
there's no other person I ever played with that did
it like you, brother, and everything you get in the city, Bro,
you deserve it. Bro, you deserve every part of it.

Speaker 1 (01:17:56):
I know this is y'all interview on me, but look,
I wouldn't be me if I didn't tell you how
much you did for me. Bro.

Speaker 4 (01:18:05):
I never seen nobody do that. Bro like bro like
and to the point where it was annoying. Bro, he's
playing this, He playing this his laptop.

Speaker 1 (01:18:14):
He got to laptop, but he ain't even got no
headphones to his laptop, playing music and playing the game
Like I'm like, Yo, I get to another team like, Yo,
y'all don't care enough, like like all niggas do not
care like y'all, Like y'all just think y'all supposed to
just walk in the game and world like, come on, man,

(01:18:37):
like bro, like Tony allen Bro like bro, like people
took looking at me like yo, crazy, I'm like, no,
he not crazy. He just know what he wants. Like, Bro,
you ain't crazy, bro, Like like that stigma need to
get out of here.

Speaker 4 (01:18:50):
Bro, like you you wanted to you wanted to realist
people ever met in my life?

Speaker 1 (01:18:55):
Bro, in my life?

Speaker 4 (01:18:57):
Bro, like for real, I'm getting like emotion like talking
about because this is this is like one of some
of the best times in my life.

Speaker 1 (01:19:04):
Bro, playing with both of y'all and y'all with my.

Speaker 4 (01:19:07):
Old g's Like, y'all don't even realize that, bro, Like
salary of aside, I'm the younger dude. Y'all come in, Tony,
come in. It's like, Bro, you just want a championship.
You're like, bro, this is what you want. Like and
at that point, I'm like, I'm like, bro, like you
know this team we ain't win that much, like they

(01:19:28):
added you, Like okay, whatever, you know what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (01:19:32):
The ad Z, I'm like, I'm like whatever, whatever, whatever,
But like when y'all came and realized, like, Bro, I
can't be the young dude no more, just trying to
figure it out. Like y'all came in. Y'all came in
here for a reason, you know what I'm saying.

Speaker 4 (01:19:47):
So like I look back at my old my younger self,
I'm like, damn, Like, bro, I should have took advantage
of that because you done like you have been through
it already. Z. They were calling a black hole, like bro,
Like they call you the black hole, and it's like, Bro,
you've been through all that ship and and you you
you figured.

Speaker 1 (01:20:06):
It out, like you took all the all the hate
and all that stuff. And you was like, Bro, at
this point my career, I want to win.

Speaker 4 (01:20:13):
You know what I'm saying. I want to win. And
look you had you you you made me come up
to speed because I was trying to figure it out.
It's like, Bro, you ain't got Look Bro, you can't
just shoot anything.

Speaker 1 (01:20:24):
Bro. You know it's funny you said I did never
see a shot you didn't like you was jacking that motherfucker.
I ain't gonna even lie, Rudy. Rudy, you the type
of motherfucker come off see the help side, helping and
still shoot. Now, Rudy, then you fucked me up with

(01:20:46):
them just after month, Bro so much. I'm just gonna
talking about how many time.

Speaker 6 (01:20:56):
Ain't no f G as f G M baby, you
know l G LGAs.

Speaker 1 (01:21:05):
That's all I'm saying. Look, but I did, you know
it's me figuring out, Bro, it was like part of
my process, Like yo, Bro, I was twenty four, like
the story told. I was like twenty four, Like Bro,
like wh who all this money? And then with with
with this type of what they say you gotta you
gotta hold. If you just get it, it's just as

(01:21:27):
much suspected. So now you you learn on the flat
and you also realizing how we're coming in in our careers.
But you already won a championship. No no, no, no, no,
you already want to fucking championship. Bro. I did, but
you don't know, like Bro, you yeah that too, But
I'm saying, like Bro, I'm watching, I'm watching Oklahoma City

(01:21:47):
won championship. They weren't even celebrating, Like Bro, if I
want a championship. Bro, I'd still be celebrating, bro, you
know what I'm saying, just like y'all did. It's like, bro,
but it's like, yo, y'all understand like how hard it
is to reach the mountaintop of something that you've been
trying to do for your whole life. And you did
that and you went and you lost one, you won one,

(01:22:10):
and you just coming from that and coming to Memphis,
you're like, Yo, this is what I want to do.
Your mind state was totally different than mine. Yeah, yeah
it was. And I'm gonna tell you that. The only
reason why I was like that because like we talk
about training camp, you know, training camp, you start a vision.
That's why you start the vision. So when you get
to the plateau, it's like, Okay, this is what it takes.
And so once I got the Memphis Bro, it was like, damn,

(01:22:33):
this is just like a whole nother time to do
it again. Promise with the god Bro. Rudy, Rudy or
your open game dunks, your last game game winner. Bro.
I like, Rudy, you don't realize what motherfucker see you
ass That's why that's that's why I'm mad at why
I asked you about that flowers. You give me flowers

(01:22:56):
like best ever, Dude. I appreciate that and only that
in order to do what in order for my fucker
to even put you in that plateau, you was doing
something special beforehand, and so I always wanted to always
tell you after mud you feel what I'm saying you
you get your flowers off the rip, bro, And even
when I ever came to the myb grid, Bro, I

(01:23:18):
always tried to be up under how you was going
because I saw how you worked out on your game.
Was you was a motherfucker that stayed come early, stay
laid work on your game. I saw you working on
them bullshit and fade away. I saw you. I say
one way that motherfucker, Hey, I ever got to check
that ship I'm talking about, I worked. But just tell

(01:23:38):
me that while we're talking about, while I'm giving your
flowers killed, tell me this, bro, And and I know
we could look at this stats back, but just bro,
was it something personal against Lebron every time? Like you
just always tried to go hard against Lebron brou He, Yes,
but you know what it was like.

Speaker 4 (01:23:59):
And I could talk by it now because it's over
for me as far as a basketball player, I just
I just really wanted to you know, I really wanted
to see why where I was against the best.

Speaker 1 (01:24:12):
You know what I'm saying, Brin was you know, he's
been the best for a long time, and he you know,
he's a great competitor. He's he's always been great.

Speaker 4 (01:24:19):
And it's just like with that team we had, like
and I'm I'm gonna take that into this, like, Bro,
we all due respect to that team and won a championship,
but I don't think they could have beat us that year. Bro,
the year I got traded, I think that that was
the year. That was our year. I mean obviously to
the West Coast Finals and number three that whole season

(01:24:42):
and I was.

Speaker 1 (01:24:43):
Hating the Yeah I went to the West Coast Final.
I was hating, but I was. You know what I'm saying,
I went, I got traded. That's what I'm saying. I
wanted to beat it. But did you don't realized, Ruder,
you got us there? No, I did not, because I
was in there. Rude, you gotta realize, bro, doing the

(01:25:03):
regular season. But look, look, okay, as long as you
know you put yeah I did, I did.

Speaker 4 (01:25:08):
Look, you know, you know, so like, bro, like, look,
it was bigger than that for me because I was
my one, my first time ever getting traded too. It's
like I'm in Memphis. I've been in Memphis for my
whole career, and I love you know what I'm saying.
I got foundations for houses and all that stuff. Like, bro,
we all got the same friends and our stuff. You
know what I'm saying. It was like that. And on

(01:25:30):
top of that, like just getting traded and and we're
doing good.

Speaker 1 (01:25:36):
Like it's not like we were in conference, you know
what I'm saying.

Speaker 4 (01:25:40):
So it's like at that point, I was like, ah,
like I was mad, and a lot of a lot
of my immaturity came out because of my beau and
in the media because of me being like like I
got traded, like you know, like fuck it, like you
know what I'm saying, like all that stuff. But Bro,
my heart was in Memphis the whole time.

Speaker 1 (01:26:00):
Broy, I knew your hot and Memphis because you don't
know how I knew your hobs and Memphis when you
got there, right, you got the Toronto, right, you got Toronto, Bo.
You probably remember this, bro, what you're about to say, Bro,
hold on my story. Let me tell you so you
get that. He get the Toronto right boy, they interview

(01:26:23):
on the boy. They playing good, what they're doing their things.
So they come in. Rudy, how's it been. You know,
you played a couple of games on the Toronto Raptors Jersey.
How does it feel playing against playing against you know,
the Raptors and playing with Tomorrow de Rosen? He said, yeah,
this is one of the best two guys I never
played with in my life. I said, what that was?

(01:26:45):
That was a shot. That was a little shot. That
was a little shot. That was a Shoteah, that was
a shot. Bro oh man, I said, for now, it's
Rudy k Yo. That's look. Look, it's Rudy k That's
that's that's where I be started though, That's what that's

(01:27:07):
what lo lo. Look, I love you, bro. You know
you know that hurt my hurt my arms. I made
it all make sense. I made it all make sense
when I got the members. My first commercial was with

(01:27:29):
Rudy Gay. Yeah, I tell homie, Bro, I heard they
just gave you that Max. I just left the promise. Man,
I know where to tape you get there. You that
type of guy. Z Bo, that type of guy, Mike Conley,
that type of guy, Mark, that type of guy. Oh, Jacob,
shoot the three, y'all just need me. I told him
that stop that That man said yeah man. That man said,

(01:27:50):
that man said yeah man, you know, yeah, we got
a defensive got him. But you know you yo, you
was more than that. But you know I'm an average
like you Yo t t for to everybody in Memphis,
brou We just squashed a beef that they didn't they
thought was bigger than what it was. Like, it wasn't.
Look it's my brother never never never. Yeah, that's all

(01:28:14):
it was. But reality my guy. But look, but look
my first Frank mule, I'm trying to say that. I
ain't say you nothing. Man, that's an exchange. Look, look
look on some real ship on some real ship, bro.

Speaker 4 (01:28:37):
At the end of the day, like with that, with
that situation, it was like, look, I didn't expect to
get traded. I felt like we had something that at
that year, we had something special. We had just I
told you, I side like we just figured it out.
Like bruh, I wouldn't take you no shot from z Bo.
You wasn't taking from Shan from me. I wouldn't take
no shot from you. We all had our job.

Speaker 1 (01:28:56):
Mike Conley did everything he got to do. It was
like Bro, it was it was, it was, it was
a it was a machine. And I feel like the
business fucked up what we had going. I agree. So
it's like.

Speaker 4 (01:29:13):
It was really me me being angry because I went to Toronto.
I'm like whatever, I'm getting interviewed by Toronto people.

Speaker 1 (01:29:23):
Of course, I ain't gonna show no love to Memphis.
You know what I'm saying, shout he was. He was
a nice to be coming. They was comparing and to
give you and you more more more more with with that,
it's like bro like tah bro. Look in the day,
it's like bro.

Speaker 4 (01:29:41):
Like as far as as far as doing like I
told you, I gave you flys Bro, as far as
preparation and and doing anything like Bro.

Speaker 1 (01:29:51):
You have. It's not even like a question like people
feared playing against you. They had to get their slip
playing against you. It is where it is. So with
me saying that I was just hating.

Speaker 5 (01:30:06):
I was like, like niggas at that point, y'all training,
Look y'all man, all right, y'all the ops now.

Speaker 1 (01:30:18):
But you know when I and it's crazy back then
when I heard it, I'm like, he said that, So
I'm like this motherfucker right, So now listen, this is
where to be started. This is where to be started.
This is where it started. It's not the mother ro
don't even know why I owe him like this motherfucking
you ain't doing and so that helped me stay on

(01:30:43):
the man de Rozan for the rest of my career.
I didn't even think about I was in Canada. I
didn't even know you heard that ship man man he
didn't want put I didn't know ya. I thought I
ain't gonna lie that was he is and know what
and know what and know what. Bro not taking anything
from him.

Speaker 4 (01:30:59):
I'm not trying to put who against what, but Tomorrow
has added something to his game every year, Bro, every year.

Speaker 1 (01:31:05):
You know.

Speaker 4 (01:31:05):
That's that's that's like, honestly, that's one of my best friends.
So like that was another part of it. That's one
of my that's really my dog, Like that's that's that's
that's my that's my people. He look he up, he
up there in one of the toughest guards for me.

Speaker 1 (01:31:18):
If anybody ever asked me whoever I had tough time.
He top five easy car for sure. From from his
transition game to any any a real one too, Like
on top of that, outside of it here real one.
You know what I mean, You know what I mean,
you know what I mean. It's understood.

Speaker 4 (01:31:34):
Yeah, he got out the mud, got get to the show.

Speaker 1 (01:31:38):
Baby, it's now out the mud. He did so from
from from from there, obviously you went to another three
teams or whatever. But talk to us about that experience
of trying to find culture a fit and actually you know,
being a guy that have to find his way in

(01:32:01):
the league. So I never could. I never could find it.
Like I never never could find it. Bro.

Speaker 4 (01:32:06):
We had something special, like we we understood each other
like Bro, Like I knew when ze Bo needed to ball,
Mike didn't need to know, like if Mike like Bro, Like.

Speaker 1 (01:32:20):
If I knew z Bo like need to like I
would Mike get them ball Like Bro. It's like one
of those situations like I knew you like look Tony,
Look Tony been baling, Bro, Like look look Broun, I'm
just gonna cut no no no no no no no
no no no. But you had you had your you
had your you had you had your players when you
you got eight a little bit z. No Tony stopped

(01:32:41):
stop starting bro, Tony because because because people outside of
this don't understand. They don't understand that you bro't understand bro.
Y'all could go check it up, y'all go the cover game.
I'm twenty points eighteen to Tony. Yeah, nigga coming out
the street. I think they can play you just because

(01:33:03):
you can play defense. You will, you will have seventy
on them. You know, Bro, I say, bro brou Tony
can handle that motherfucker you playing you was playing point,
Mike playing point like Tony, Like, don't think.

Speaker 4 (01:33:18):
Tony Alla just played defense. He's really good at that.
And that's the problem with people these days. They don't
sit here and be like, yo, I'm a lock in
on this. Tony locked in on that, and he made
a lot of money just locking on way there. And
there's a legend just on locking on what he can do, Like,
you don't have to do everything, just do what you're
good at. He's still a pro. Like, Bro, don't try

(01:33:39):
m don't try him. You got you got you know,
you got guys out there saying you can play one
on one and all.

Speaker 1 (01:33:45):
We spoke on that. Bro, I'm glad you spoke on
that because I ain't gonna lie. It's a lot of
cats right now, you know what I'm saying that. You
know they're doing a lot of internet basketball, you know,
and so with the internet. Yeah no, the moment, Yeah, man,
go and get out. I want what you want to say.

(01:34:06):
He's gonna say, you gave me my flowers? Right, you
know what I'm saying. Uh, Rudy, you still look in shape,
you still look good. You know understand as a pro type,
prolific score that you were in the league. I'm asking you,
what do you think about today's game of retired players
are playing one on one and how do you fit
in those scheme of things.

Speaker 4 (01:34:26):
I think one on one is a totally different game
than than five on five. But I think when you
when you're talking about a guy that that has gotten buckets,
like come on man, like like zebo, Like, Bro, the
post is one on one.

Speaker 1 (01:34:41):
I learned my post ship based off of you. Like
you can't try me on a one on one? Like
what we're talking about, bro? Like brou like like you
know what I mean?

Speaker 4 (01:34:53):
And I say it just like it is, bro, Like
it is what it is, bro, Like, I've done this
on the on the highest level, and I've been and
veer it as a one on one player, good or
bad on the highest level for sure, So I'm not
worried about nobody saying nothing about me. Like, bro, come on, man,
come on.

Speaker 1 (01:35:09):
What did it take you for you get out there?
Cool little man, million cooler.

Speaker 3 (01:35:15):
I don't know, it might be, he said, he hea
the king man one on one right now.

Speaker 1 (01:35:21):
So I don't know. I don't know.

Speaker 4 (01:35:24):
It's gonna take me some time. I get I get
on in basketball shape, it might be easily. Like I
love you, I love you, but I gets basketball.

Speaker 1 (01:35:35):
Look like when I was in shape. Yeah, like you
know what I mean.

Speaker 4 (01:35:42):
If I'm if I'm in shape, it's not too many
people stay from the basketball.

Speaker 1 (01:35:46):
In a while. No, all right, but alright, cool, we
gonna move for an interview. Smoke No no, no, no,
I mean I ain't about smoke because like, look, I'm competitive,
like trying to see look me and you, you know,
you know no no, no, no, no, yeah, yeah, but

(01:36:08):
no man, yeah but me and you.

Speaker 6 (01:36:11):
Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna tell you like this though, Yeah,
you man, you could be like we stopped talking for
a little bit, just off the competitive ship, so you
already know what it is.

Speaker 1 (01:36:23):
So like, come on, man, I love I love you
to death I have I don't care about other people.
You know what I mean. So it's something to ask you, bro,
when we look at the current state of basketball today, Well,
the game was like threes, yeah, and layouts. Back in

(01:36:45):
the day we play inside out basketball. We couldn't shoot
the three member Liano said, luck, Bro, I said, do
you You don't say, do you ever see the game
getting back like that? And what do you see yourself
thriving into today's game? Because you gotta taste up a
little bit. You gotta taste up a little bit how
they play today. So like, what do you see yourself
fitting to good day's games?

Speaker 4 (01:37:04):
I see myself as like a soldier, so like when whatever,
like early in my early in the game, like Lino told.

Speaker 1 (01:37:11):
Us, like, bro, we can't shoot threes. We had to
get the ball to z. We figured it out from there.
You remember that. So it's like, yo, we predicated off
of all that. Most of my most of my ship
was off of transition and just like one on one game.
So like right now, with the court being open, with
my one on one game, I think it would be whatever,

(01:37:31):
trouble you know what I'm saying, trouble, you know what
I mean. But if it's in butts, you know what
I mean. Whatever.

Speaker 4 (01:37:39):
But I thought I think I would thrive right now
in my am my, in my prim self, I think
I'll thrive, thrive for sure. I mean, I think we
always get some money.

Speaker 1 (01:37:49):
Man, what's up? What's up? Man? They need? What? What's
up man? What we need to do? What's up? Hey? Man?
Some type of I'm playing for? But No, I want
to talk what we're talking about. Career, we talk about,
talk to us about.

Speaker 4 (01:38:10):
I can't look, first of all, I can't talk about
my career without talking about y'all.

Speaker 1 (01:38:14):
No, you you gave us off that.

Speaker 4 (01:38:16):
No, No, I'm telling you how much I respect y'all
because this is where, this is where it started, and
this is where people remember me as like from y'all,
but being with y'all, like y'all, y'all really like Rudy.

Speaker 1 (01:38:31):
Fire eighty two million dollars, that's nothing. You heard these
niggas you before, head, Well, so this walk from my perspective.
I've been telling them if it won for Rudy Gate,
saying I ain't playing to day, I wouldn't be Tony.
I'm tame, bro. You ain't start in front of me.
No I didn't. You said I ain't playing. We played together, No,

(01:38:53):
you said you won't. You didn't want to play this game. No,
I didn't want to play. He went me of the
game before, but then.

Speaker 8 (01:39:02):
Saying he said, but look, look, hello, I'm gonna tell
the story right now.

Speaker 1 (01:39:18):
To tell it. Please please tell tell his own second,
this is no tell it, tell it telling that kind
of story story. They cut it up. They're gonna tell
you about story story. Yeah, tell it. Please let me
tell the story.

Speaker 4 (01:39:34):
Listen, listen the whole grit and grind thing he said,
because I sat out because the game whatever little did
is he No, it's the same injury that turned into
a chilles to ted, same injury it turned into that.
So you know what I'm saying. List the foot it worked.

(01:39:56):
So no, no, he's not tripping. He's not him because
he's the impetitive. I look, you want, you wanted me
to play, and I'm not.

Speaker 1 (01:40:04):
I'm not. No, like I understand all that. I understand
all that. And that's the thing about playing in the
sport like yo, when you're not playing, you affecting the
whole team, and how the other cats look at you
when you don't do that. Yes, it was a it
was a code of honor. It was it was you
standing up for something and not falling for anything about

(01:40:25):
the team. You got through this tonail injury. They want
a toenail injury. Bro I had, Man, I'm gonna fight
through this turn. But look now this is my recollection

(01:40:48):
of it. Tell me what you think. So now that
this is what I thought of it, right, so I like,
you know, I've already said it. When I came into Mimics,
I was Team Rudy. I was Rudy brothers you. When
I came in, I looked at the schedule, I said, okay, cool,

(01:41:11):
all right, they just gave dude eighty two. Yeah, that's
the that's the guy. Let's figure out what's up with him,
and let's go from that emotion as any player would do.
And when I came in and I did that, I
told you the story. Boom, Team Rudy. This how I
see the thing I just left to find boom, so boom.
Now you move forward, I get to going through the

(01:41:31):
battles with you, boom, and I was in Oklahoma City
with you, and I saw that when we came out
of Oklahoma City and you want I walked when you
walked through the herd, I'm walking right behind. I gotta
keep my star make like he g got. But you wasn't.
You wouldn't you, You wouldn't d Tony Allen that you
are today. I was know you in your mind. You was.

(01:41:55):
I was. I just didn't get no playing time. We
will talk about coach Hollins later. We want to talk
about Colle. I'm not feeling always been that guy. I
know you've been that guy, been wired up to be
that guy. Bro. I told my a cl to be
that guy. I know that I had to survive being
that guy. See what you said you're doing right now.

(01:42:18):
That's why you're told y'all now exactly. But you wasn't
because but you wasn't in. But listen, I'm trying to
tell you, bro. Day Bro, I felt like I just
left the finals, Bro, the NBA Finals and lost to
Kobe Bryant. You just heard the motherfucker on on the
podcast and say, man, we was looking at it and

(01:42:39):
like the Wade just said, we were looking at it.
Paul Gas should have won. That motherfucker. I was part
of one of the guys that's sticking Kobe. So in
my mind, I'm thinking, I'm finna do that for you.
I'm finna come be running our test for you. Yeah,
that's how I'm looking at it. I know what he
gonna do. I know what Mike gonna do. I know
what I gonna do. But the guy is you. That's

(01:42:59):
how I was thinking that. Rudy was my soul and
my kid, all five of my kids right now, see
what I'm saying. So that specific day when you did that,
I'm like, boy, I'm like, no, hold on, I gotta
remember last week he said these something bitchess one showing
on the pick and rod. Yeah, you remember that. We
walked through the hall. He said, Man, this motherfucker had forty.

(01:43:23):
These mother fuckers ain't showing picking roll. I said, I
robot Rudy. We see him again next week. Y, you're
talking about k kd Oh you remember? Yeah? So now
look I was there. Look at next week. We played
Sacramento before we went to before we went to Okay, See,
I saw you do that. Windmen. You know what I said.
You know what I'm saying. I said, we fell fuck

(01:43:45):
KD up today. All I gotta do is Realboud James
Hard Yeah what I said. Yeah, but when you pulled
up right, bro, it was thirty minutes four o'clock, cause
you know you got ninety minutes before you go. Then
you they coach came there. By the way, this is
the whole, This is the whole great grind, what the foster. Look,

(01:44:05):
this is this is Tony Allen to what we had
a lot of fun of that. This is this is
Tony Allen. So this is Tony Allen though.

Speaker 4 (01:44:19):
Whatever it is, whatever it is, he's gonna take it
and gonna motivate him to whatever it is. I just
need something, and you know that you just need something, okay,
So so so behind that, behind that, look, me and
KD been going at for years, for years, for years
to I've been look me and him. Look there there's

(01:44:41):
interviews everything like Tony, I mean not to but KD. Whatever,
I'm like, I'm at his ass, you know that, Like
I've always always been at his ass.

Speaker 1 (01:44:50):
So I had turf toe, I did. I had turf toe.
So I was like but turf he said, ton. Yeah,
so like at this point, at this point, at this point,
like bro, this is before all the other ship. So
it's like, bro, that ship fled up. I'm like, bro,

(01:45:11):
I I don't think I can guard that motherfucker to day.
So it's like, bro, do I want to stop out there?

Speaker 4 (01:45:19):
I was like, Bro, I don't know if I can
do it. So I was like, man, I'm not going
to do it.

Speaker 1 (01:45:24):
This is before like now nowadays it would have been approved,
not back then. That's why I'm trying to tell you,
Like back then it was like whatever. But look that
me playing through that injury got me to tell my achilles,

(01:45:45):
which which what happened later, you know what I'm saying
that that was like four years four years after that.
But I'm like, yo, it turned into a whole bunch,
like just me playing through that. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:45:56):
But it's like, but I understand what you're saying, because
like that's the air we come from, you know what.

Speaker 1 (01:46:01):
I'm saying it whatever, what what?

Speaker 8 (01:46:03):
Bro?

Speaker 1 (01:46:03):
I'm like Kevin Durant, I gotta give him. You got
to have a hundred per cent of root to gate,
you know. You see that's the real yo. Look you
have a durn like bro, like look look and the

(01:46:25):
day you know what I mean? Bro, Bro, I love
I love him to death. Bro, that's why I like that.

Speaker 4 (01:46:34):
Like you're my brother for real, Like you know that, right,
I know that you know that and you know that too,
right like in the day. It's like, Bro, whatever y'all say,
I'm not worried about it because I fight with my
family all the time. Like everybody outside, I'm making something
bigger than what it is or whatever. Bro, I don't like, Bro, I.

Speaker 1 (01:46:53):
Won't talk to you. You know, I don't care like yo.
You like y'all y'all like Bro, I I've been through
like some of the toughest times in my life with y'all.
Y'all were there when my grandmother passed. Bro, you remember
that when I left and like, bro, like I was there,
Z like walked on the bus like, yo, you good
like bro, like some of the toughest times in my

(01:47:14):
life I've had with y'all Like bro, like, but we
have like whatever Tony Allen say, I'm like, man, that's Tony.
I know Tony Bro. Whatever it is, like, it is
what it is, like Bro. Look, I'm still laughing with
you like, Bro, you say what you say like I know, Tony,
it is what it is like Bro, you can say
what you want to make what it what you want
from a killer, I actually know kill. I'm telling this killing.

(01:47:37):
We talked j Early killed the first fashion nigga to me,
to me, what's Rudy gated? First nigga told me at
He told me A t ain't true religions a little
too big.

Speaker 6 (01:47:59):
Religious hed d dirty No no old true relief yeah
one two eleven.

Speaker 1 (01:48:08):
No noz.

Speaker 6 (01:48:13):
No but but no, but look, look people, little people
know t A had a couple of d MPs.

Speaker 4 (01:48:19):
Ye had a couple of d MP No, that's no,
but that's that's out of the mud type of ship.
Twenty five But listen, but listen, but listen, that's some
real ship. Like he had d MPs and doing them
d MPs. People just like, yo, what you got on
your feet? T A B like fifteen hundred that's all.

Speaker 1 (01:48:39):
No, I'm been getting money for a long time, getting
money for a long time. Nobody said nothing about shoe
game like my gene. It was like nineteen nineties, like
a yeah, like it was like I was in the era,
like a different man. Like, you don't get the laughing

(01:49:03):
some of bitsiness. Oh my mama, don't don't let the
media yo this some of bits came in there with
brown stones in his jean. He say he get rid
of the boat. These called robbins yo. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
it's a rabbi jean. No, he was a rare monkey nigga.
He was a rare monkey nigger that d monkey junkie.

(01:49:27):
Knock it out getting money for a long time. Man,
that's all. It's about thirty round stones in the front
of this jean. You turn around there on his ass too.
You got a shadow lip party going on. You're wrong, yeah,
lip like fuck man, listen, man, coming on killer. We're

(01:49:48):
gonna get it back, basketball man, We're gonna get back.
When you left Sacramento, how like, how was you shaping
up your career at that point because you you eventually
to your achilles. Yeah, so talk to us about that
injury and how did that? You know how your NBA?

Speaker 4 (01:50:07):
So I told I told my achilles and in Sacramento
in my last year and I was a free agent
and I opted out of my well because because I
opted out of my contract, it was just one of
those situations where I just felt like.

Speaker 1 (01:50:25):
I just didn't. I didn't.

Speaker 4 (01:50:26):
I didn't feel like like at that point my career,
I didn't feel like Sacramento was in line with what
I was trying to do, Like I was trying to, like, bro,
we all want to win at the end of the day, man,
you know what I'm saying that if your organization is
not in line with that, it's like it's tough. And
you know, I didn't think. I didn't feel like at
the time they was ready for that. I wanted to leave.

(01:50:50):
I told my Achilles, I was I was rehabbing, I
was betting on myself. I went to I went to
un San Antonio just on something like, you know, just
knowing their pedigree, knowing what they what they was about,
and you know, at that point they was you know,
they was, they was running it, you know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (01:51:10):
So I just wanted to be a part of that,
you know what I mean. But your best career year
was in twenty fourteen. Fifteen that year, did they like
deteriorate the thoughts of the future with the Sacramento Kings
at that point or like, how did you how did
you feel, how did you visit your career at that point. Well,
I mean, because you know it was my prime like
your best.

Speaker 4 (01:51:29):
Yeah, I mean to think about see, I learned a
lot from y'all, Right, I learned a lot, and I
took that with me where I went, like to be
an all around player, and I think that's my best
all around around year. Like you know what I'm saying.
I wanted all my teammates like playing with me. I

(01:51:51):
wanted to just be the bailout. I wanted to be
everybody's bailout, like give me the ball and you're good,
like end of the game. Like y'all, I took all
the pressure, did all that, and that's.

Speaker 1 (01:52:04):
Just what I wanted. Man, That's what I wanted for
my career. And that's what I wanted when I played
with y'all, like I wanted to I want Bro at
the end of the day, Bro, I wanted to bring
a title back to Memphis. Bro, and I and I
know that's what you wanted, Tuesdy. That's that's why I
knew that because because the people like we like Memphis
is different, like it's like we we touched the people.

(01:52:26):
Let me be with them, like we got the same
like Bro, it's not that big of a town, bro,
Like we we were in there, so it's like blue
collar town, blue collar town, expect hard workers. In twenty teen,
you know you're a gold medalist. You can you talk
about that experience and talk about how international basketball is
being discussed as they're taking over the league today. Yeah,

(01:52:50):
I mean that was that was the experience for me.

Speaker 4 (01:52:54):
It was it was one that taught you like there's
basketball outside of America and they actually about it and
how competitive they are and how bad they wanted to
beat us. But it also showed me, like the people
that was in the locker room with me and how
they prepare for the game, Like a lot of guys
did a lot of crazy, crazy stuff trying to just

(01:53:14):
get pay pay for the game. Like that was d
Rolls on that team.

Speaker 1 (01:53:17):
I forgot who was on the team.

Speaker 4 (01:53:19):
I think twenty ten. I think it was like Clay
was Clay on that team. I don't think Clay was
on the team.

Speaker 1 (01:53:26):
It was like STEPH KD squad and with all that,
with all that team, it was like it was tough.
It was tough to win.

Speaker 4 (01:53:38):
So it was like, bro, like it's it's a lot
of game outside of outside of us, and we figured
that out.

Speaker 1 (01:53:48):
Bro.

Speaker 4 (01:53:48):
It was like, see the preparation of all those guys
going into it. It really changed how I felt about
basketball and looked right.

Speaker 1 (01:53:57):
So in that moment being around those guys, did you understand, like,
did you fully understand had you fully understand the team
concept of what it takes to win? And I was
playing with y'all already. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Once
you I.

Speaker 4 (01:54:14):
Did, I felt, I felt the concept what it takes
a win, but I didn't feel the concept of what
it takes a win and not be the top guy,
top top two, top two or three guys.

Speaker 1 (01:54:26):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know what I'm saying. So I
understood what it was takes to like to come off
the bench or do all that stuff. So that that's
what was different, Like it was different from me because
I see myself through the vision of uh a, Sam
Young or no, no, no, just keep it. You see

(01:54:46):
yourself as I'm the guy No I'm talking about on
that team. Get item. You had to just then I
had adjustes I'm saying That's why I had adjust because
that's what made me it better. What you said, Sam,
you know what I'm saying, like on that team, I
had to feel like the same young or or uh

(01:55:06):
better example Lou Williams maybe okay, all right or or
or uh because a lot of the author shout to
d A. You know what I mean. I don't know
who I mean, but we know, we know that's what
we're here for. Go YouTube, darl author. You know what
I'm saying, that's what we're here. Come on, come on,

(01:55:28):
come on. They don't know, but we're gonna let them know.
We're gonna let them know. I don't know, we won't
let them know. You still got that one team want
to go? Man? One team? You want to go? One team?
Want to go to shut name? Yeah, d A, d
A my dad, Man, it's all about God. So Rudy,

(01:55:50):
I can't front Bro. You gotta talk about times leaving Sacramento, Bro,
and the journey that it was knowing that, Hey man,
I've been idn't win lottery. You know what I'm saying,
that saying all the money and now it's the mode
of winning. Now I gotta put myself aligned with winning.
Did that take effect on your career or did it

(01:56:11):
put a mask set to you to where I understand
the business. Now, Yeah, I mean up until that point,
like before I told my Achilles, it was like I
was still competing against a lot of the guys that
we all know about. I felt like you was up
that killer. I appreciate it. I appreciate that. I appreciate that.

Speaker 4 (01:56:31):
People don't realize that, and people don't realize what nobody
knows nothing.

Speaker 1 (01:56:36):
But people don't like that team we have, bro, like bro,
like it was squad, I swear, I feel that. Come on, man,
come on, you don't get hurt. Feel that way. I
feel that way. So how we we spanked them? Yeah?
All them right now?

Speaker 4 (01:56:57):
Look bro, bro, it's not too many teams that could
beat us. Bro in four games, beat us four times.
Come on, now, it wasn't too many teams that can
beat us. But at that point I was I felt
like I was competing against a lot of the people,
like you know, the Melos and all that stuff, the melos,
the bronze and all that stuff. And you know, rightfully, so,

(01:57:19):
I mean everybody does at the end of the day,
like that's what you want to be. But later, like
at you know, when I left Sacramento after the surgery,
it was like I was in a different mindset. I
was just I was working on trying to be back,
working on trying to be you know, just a pro

(01:57:39):
at the end of the day, just try to be.

Speaker 1 (01:57:46):
You know, try try to be something. And you know
when I went to when I went to San Antonio,
was like, like I understand and I agreed to be
a part of something that was bigger than me, you
know what I mean. So so that was that's what
that was. So for sure, Bro, having the having to

(01:58:07):
understand that, like at this point, Bro, you know, it's
part of the business and as a journeyman, you got
to figure out, like how do I adapt? Was that
a hard process and understanding what trade and the business
is about? Yes, it was. It was because.

Speaker 4 (01:58:29):
You go from like twenty plenty points of game to
come out of the bench just like it's different and
it's a fight that you got got to have with yourself.
But at the end of the day, it's like a
vision that somebody else had for you. So it's not
something that you have a plan for yourself. It's like
a plan that's bigger than you. So you have to
just fall into the line. Now every time it might

(01:58:51):
not be true it might not be right, but the businesses,
there's people above.

Speaker 1 (01:58:58):
You, you know what I mean.

Speaker 4 (01:58:59):
And you for a job, you know what I mean,
Like you could be replaced, so you have to like
you have to find.

Speaker 1 (01:59:09):
You have to find your your spot.

Speaker 4 (01:59:11):
And that was the first time when I went to
San Antonio that had to find my spot and to
find out how I can be productive in that.

Speaker 1 (01:59:20):
Spot, you know what I mean, Especially after coming after
a surgery, after after Achille surgery, I just felt like
I felt like I was just I had to you know,
I had to fit in, you know what I mean.
And so with the Achilles injuries being a main factor
in today's game, like like what what obviously we saw

(01:59:44):
one of your d MV brothers lose his in the
crucial part of the year. Can you explain us, like
what's ways to prevent that for our viewers that don't
understand how taking care of the body is important. I
don't think anybody really knows right now. I'm there's ways
to prevent it. I think you can. There's things you

(02:00:04):
can add into your training. But you know, as you
can see with Jason Jayson Tatum, who I have talked to,
h I've talked to him. I've talked to Dane, who
is my my young I loved, I loved. I love

(02:00:24):
that you have. You have Haller Burton, who I haven't
talked to. But you know those guys like you know,
I think for the for the guys that plays those
kinds of minutes need to add those kinds of things
that we do, like things this, this is. And I

(02:00:44):
keep giving your flowers, bro, because because it's man. So
I know, I know everybody bro like this guy like
like Bro, he would he would be in there like
preventing every single thing. Like Bro, he would do every
thing to be just there available. You know what I mean.

(02:01:09):
He looking at me like what he's doing. I'm gonna
do that, you know what I mean? Train my god,
you know what I mean. Training at the board right
work talking about talking about look he's doing he's doing.
He's doing the leg, he's manage. I'm from my old school.
I'm doing leg prans Hey. This is like like he

(02:01:32):
pulling his he doing He like what that do? I'm like,
I don't know what I'm doing. He's like I'm doing
to you remember our Game seven with me and him. Yeah,
he brought up earlier. It was a Game seven against
Blake Griffin Man, and I want that's just one of

(02:01:56):
his only regrets. That's the only regrets I'm saying. And
my thing about that is, you know, when you talk about,
you know, coaching, it was obviously adjustments that need to
be made. I thought they made the proper adjustments. They thought, all, okay, cool,
we can't beat them in the half course set. What's
our best what's our best offense? Transition? Let's beat them

(02:02:17):
in transition, and that's spread the full I thought, honestly
that that was a news style of play that hit
us because we was used to everybody coming in throwing
it into the post. You know what I'm saying, playing
the way we play, and we will play that way.
But I ain't gonna lie playing them that that series.
I thought, Vinny, that's not our fault. That's not our fault,

(02:02:39):
and it ain't They ain't our fault. But and that's
the that's the life lesson in that, you know what
I'm saying, Adjustments are always to be made in the playoffs.
You should never stick to one style of play. Because
Nick Young, the guy who even brought this series up
to me back to me in the podcast. Bro, he
let it be known, like, hey, yo, brother, we beat
y'all remember that year. I mean, only that type of ship.

(02:03:03):
That's all he got the hold on to, you know
what I mean. I mean, look, look, congratulations, but look listen,
at the end of the day, we were a better
team for y'all one, for y'all one, But we're the
better team. It happens all the time. It's happened to me. Look,
maybe it's just me because I maybe I'm bad luck
because it happened to me in college. Maybe it's college
because college didn't have the same thing. But Bro, at

(02:03:24):
the end of the day, like, Bro, we were the
better team. We should have been there. And and Game
seven like yo, y'all y'all hit a lot of shots,
and Bro in the playoffs, that's what it's about, like
his shots. Whatever a game plan wasn't what it was
like it was you know what I mean, y'all hit shots.
That's all it is. That's all. And so till this

(02:03:46):
day I look at that, I'd be like, damn, what
was there some of the adjustments we could have made.
I mean, because we solely sold our whole game on
throwing it in the post, you know what I'm saying,
And it's that out. Meanwhile, we had shooters, we had everything.
You know what I'm saying that specific year we had

(02:04:07):
actually actually did Actually we had a person change from
the real author to each position. Each position, we had motions.
So they kind of always make you, you know, look
back and say this and that the other. But more
so importantly, Bro Rudy, I just want to let you know, Bro, uh,
you are one of them guys. Bro, you always been

(02:04:29):
looked at to me as one of them guys that
could just put the ball in the basket. It ain't
too many guys that could put the ball in the
back like flat out puts the ball like roll it out.
I'm getting the ball in the basket, Bro, And I
promise you you did a great study of that. And
even if after your injury, I know you probably don't
like talking about a lot after the Achilles, but Bro,
for you to maintain after that says a lot of

(02:04:52):
shit about being a pro, you know what I'm saying,
And adjusting to how you suppose to maintain. Ain't in
the league, yo, That mean you had good o gs,
That mean you had ways to survive in the league
whether Okay, I ain't this athletic, but I know I
know how to get here early. I know how to

(02:05:13):
come late. I know how to beat a piece to
a puzzle and show my young guys. And I thought
that alone. Bro, your presence is contagious. Bro. And they'd
always been that way in the locker room. Man, and
I always say brow, Yeah, I'm gon holl right now. Bro,

(02:05:34):
But you the first mother when you told me to
take off your true religis what Man said. Bro, you
gotta start winning the bigger true bro bro trenches together. Bro,
you can't just say you can't just say just anybody

(02:05:55):
talk my young nigga, my young nigga, Like you can't
just say that, like you gotta come down a few sides.
Ain't nobody wearing them jeans no more? I'm boot cutting
jeans over their force one about fashion ban Yeah, bro, hey,

(02:06:17):
but look what what what you're saying? What you're saying
that bro, with both of y'all Bro, and look me
being here, it's like full circle because I love y'all
bro life for real, you know, only the day like
Z let's see, like you taught me a lot in
this league, Bro, perseverance, how to how to not worry

(02:06:39):
about what people say, because Bro, you had you had
a people talked crazy about you before you got the
Memphis And you turn that around. Bro, you turn it
around Tony, Tony about how you how you approach the game,
how you prepare for the game, how you how you
how you just just love it, how you love, how

(02:06:59):
you love what you love? Bro?

Speaker 4 (02:07:01):
And and and no matter what, bro like and your
love and made us do this right. But I respect
you so much. I respect you so much to the
fact that I understand where you came from. You understand
where I came from for sure. But that's why, Like yo, brother,
I argue with my family all the time. And that's

(02:07:22):
what we do.

Speaker 1 (02:07:23):
That's what we do. That's what we do. That's what
we do. We do. But we used to argue all
the time. You don't want to faight no fucking defense
today and all that ship. I'm like, nigga, don't want
to make a layup.

Speaker 6 (02:07:34):
Nigga, Like we do that all the time.

Speaker 1 (02:07:43):
Bro, We argue all the time. So Stap that while
we on town, we're gonna let you get away with
all them. Yeah. So stamp that it was about four
five motherfuckers on you while you fading away. Shoot that motherfucker.
Just say, hey boy, that ain't your percentage right there? No, no, no, no,
I told you my bad. I would. I would look

(02:08:04):
look and look. I learned that too from the team.
I said, look, look, I can't be shooting that ship.
You know what I'm saying. You know what I'm saying,
because you know, look look on other team, like man
ta z Bo was on my ass. They was on
my ass and said, look, look I got a chill.
You know what I mean. That made me a better No, no, no,
before I ain't let you say nothing. See, I ain't

(02:08:24):
you saying nothing. Y'all made me a better basketball player,
not just a better nothing other than that, y'all made
me a better actually basketball player. Learn more than just
trying to put the ball in the hole. Man. That
made a better basketball player. Man. And that's what it's about.
That's what out the mud about. Bro. You know what
I'm saying. That's what it's about. Better out the mud.

(02:08:45):
You did well, yo, this out the mud man. I
appreciate y'all joining in man today. We got a chance
of man to get blessed with I got Rudy gate Man,
