Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to the Overcomefort Podcast. I'm your host, Jadakalopez.
Think you guys so much for choosing to watch and
listen to today's episode. If you chose to listen to
today's episode because of the title, welcome, you're in a
safe space. We're in my kitchen. Today's episode is going
to be about ambition and burnout, something I feel like
(00:23):
we've all been through, that we're going through, that we've experienced,
that we've struggled with, and I wanted to give my
personal insight experiences that I've been through. We're going to
talk about the signs of ambition, the signs of burnout,
(00:45):
how important it is, spiritually solutions, all that good stuff. Okay,
but if you guys are actually watching today, we're going
to be making feedale. It is one of my quickest,
easiest meals. I'm not even gonna lie, but it's one
(01:05):
of my favorites. If you guys grew up having, then
you guys know, and then I'm gonna show you guys
a little trick, little hack that I like to do.
But okay, first of all, I get everything else ready
and we're just gonna have a chit chat to start off. Actually,
(01:26):
I know you said I wasn't gonna give you guys
the recipes, but this is important. This is important to me.
The feedale has to be the alphabet. I do not
care what anybody says. I like the shells. The shells
are cool, but the alphabet is where it's at. Why.
I don't know. It was just my favorite anyways, Okay,
why I wanted to get into this topic. Why I
(01:47):
feel like it's important to share. If you were in
my age group. I am twenty I'm turning twenty eight.
We are at a point where we're just Some of
us feel like we have it all together. Some of
us feel like we don't. And that can be a
little scary, especially in today's society, where our success is
measured by how good we're doing in life, and I
(02:08):
feel like it shouldn't be about that. I feel like
it should be about how our health is doing, how
our mental health is doing, how our friendships are doing.
I feel like that's way more important than anything else,
in my opinion. Like, if you've seen those trends on TikTok,
(02:29):
if you guys have seen those things, those reels where
it's like I'm rich because and then it goes into
videos of because I've seen this, I've traveled here, my
health is good, my body's moving, I can breathe all
that stuff, and that is the simple truth and that
is the fact. But we also we are also people
(02:52):
that have ambition, people that want to see success, that
want us to succeed, and you know, we have dreams,
we have plans, we have goals to reach, which is
totally that's good. That is like, you know, we're growing
up and growing up. I witnessed a lot. I saw
(03:17):
my mom over work, overtired, but she was also providing,
you know, she grew up. Obviously, my grandpa came over
here with a couple of books in his pocket, and instantly,
that's already like putting yourself and your future family in
that position, Like you got to work twice as hard
(03:37):
to get to another level to reach that. And I
feel like my mom did that. But she also missed
out on birthdays, she was tired, she missed out on parties,
emotionally just not there. And when she passed away, and
(03:58):
she passed away when I was fifteen, So witnessing that
and experiencing that in my life, like I felt like
I started being in fight or flight fight or flight
mode where it's like I need to survive. How am
I gonna survive? You know, obviously you guys are gonna
say like, oh, you survived out to your trust fund. Realistically,
(04:20):
I don't touch it like there's I don't ever want
to be that person. Yes it's there or whatever. But
I wanted to be successful on my own, not just
because of who my mom is. And I'm grateful for
the platform, and I'm grateful that I was this was
a stepping stone, but instantly, like I felt like I
needed to be better or work as twice as hard
(04:42):
as she did, and I didn't want that. I started
experiencing burnout. I started getting tired or started getting anxious,
I started feeling depressed, I started overeating, And it was
just a lot of things that played into the fact
to where I'm at now that I wanted to promise
myself that I was gonna rest, I was gonna care
for my body, for my spirit, and be present for
(05:05):
my family. And I know that many of us want
to build something important, We have something that we want
to fulfill, a calling, but constantly pushing ourselves can obviously
lead to burnout. And it could draw us away, it
can make us lose relationships and friendships. And today I
want to talk about and recognize obviously, like I said before,
(05:28):
recognize our ambition, recognize our burnout, and how we can
honor our calling on our purpose by also resting. So
examples of ambition, examples that we could see in our
day to day lives. You think about work, You think
about work during your private time with your family, Like
(05:53):
you're so focused here that you're not present in where
you're at right now. You feel and patient when times
are slow, when work is slow, which is normal, especially
for me at least in the influencer aspect, Like there's
a lot of slow months and a lot of high months.
(06:14):
There's days and there's months where I'm just like, oh,
this is really good, and we set that expectancy business
owners too. If you own a business, you have slow months,
high months, whatever, and you're just like, oh my god,
what am I doing wrong? You put the blame on
yourself when realistically, sometimes life just happens. Life is lifeing.
Another one is that you're a perfectionist. You judge yourself
(06:35):
for your efforts, how much work you're putting in, You
stay up late, you skip meals, you miss birthdays, you're
just not emotionally there. Ambitious people put their work before
everything else and ambition. I'm not saying it's bad, but
there's a balance, there's a way to handle it. There's
(06:57):
a way to steal successed by taking care of both
areas of your life. For example, like a single mother
might be working two jobs data night shifts, has a
business that she wants to grow, that love, has that hope,
has that drive in her heart, but is overwhelmed, exhausted,
(07:22):
and just emotionally drained. And the lesson is that ambition
can lead you to burnout. It could drive you away
from actually doing what you want. So what happens when
we're so ambitious and we're so focused on reaching our goals,
(07:42):
is that we put like I said, we put everything
else to the side to be able to reach it.
But there's a thing called burnout. I've been there countless
of times. It took me a while to learn my lesson.
Burnout can look like you snapping on your friends, irritable, tired,
(08:06):
annoyed with life, Your relationships are affected. You sleep your
six day hours a day, but you wake up tired.
So That means that your brain is not at rest.
That means that you are just constantly work, work, work,
even when you're in your deepest sleep. You lose interest
(08:30):
in your hobbies and the things that used to love
to do. That can also mean your relationship with God,
like you stop focusing on God and feeding that part
of your life your routines. Another maybe physical sign is
(08:53):
that you actually get sick. I saw that so many
times in my mom. I've seen it in my sister.
I've had a call her out for it, like bro,
like you need a rest, like her neck. I know
when my sister is reaching burnout because her neck always hurts,
and she starts getting sick, she starts not working out.
(09:14):
Just I know my sister. Another example could be like
a nurse. Okay, nurses, shout out the doctor, shout out
the nurses that work those twelve hour shifts. Some people
work double shifts. Some people you know, need to make
ends meet, and they work the double shift. They're physically tired,
(09:37):
they're drade, they're not giving themselves. They're not giving their
patience or customers, let's say customers, if you have a
business or whatever, their best fullest potential and it's kind
of telling you your body. Your mind's telling you like, Okay,
if I'm reacting this way to this person, or if
(09:57):
i mess up in something like you're so good at
doing something and you make a mistake, that's your mind
kind of telling you like, hey, you're not fully locked in,
like you're worried about other certain things. But I need
you to take a step back and relax. The point
is to recognize these signs and catch them early enough
(10:20):
to avoid this stuff happening to you, to avoid yourself
getting into these deep holes. And you know, because once
you reach burnout, it's like it's really hard to get
out and to build your routine again. So it's important
to be so strict on your routines and follow it
and honor yourself so that we don't reach them. We're
(10:45):
gonna go on a quick break and then we're going
to come back to talk about how this can affect
us spiritually, what it means biblically, and solutions to help
us in these situations. So we will be right back. Okay,
welcome back you guys. While we were break, I was thinking,
(11:08):
as I was talking about my sister, I recognize her
burnout and it's important that we have those people and
our closest friends and our life or our family to
recognize when we're experiencing burnout, because we don't even realize
it ourselves. We don't even know when it's happening. And
(11:29):
that is my number one thing. Also, like making sure
that you're taking care of your friendships and relationships because
otherwise you're going to kind of be left alone, not
having these people reminding you of the important things and
to be there to help you. So it's recognizing that,
recognizing the overlap of experiences like for example, there's business
(11:56):
owners staying up late but has an attitude and irritable,
you know, but ignores the fact that they're reaching up
right now our friends and family, Like it's just little
things like that that can lead to greater and heavier
things mentally, and recognizing the damage that it can do.
(12:19):
And I want to get into how it affects us,
not affects us, but the spiritual and biblical truth behind rest,
because I've had to learn how to honor that in
my personal life and recognizing how rest is important in
your walk with God in general, and even if you're
(12:41):
not Christian or if you're not in a like in
a certain path. You have to recognize that this is
a gift, this is a blessing, Like we're not meant
to be working twenty four hours of the day. You
guys are going to see or hear a lot of
people that talk about the Sabba or Jewish people specifically.
(13:02):
They do have growing up. We grew up in the
valley and there was a lot of Jewish community, and
they would be like walking the streets. Specifically, I want
to say Saturdays or Sundays, I don't remember, but they do.
It's the Sabbath Saturday. Is it Sabbath Saturday? Yeah? Right.
They don't use power, they don't use gas, they don't
(13:24):
use anything. They literally can't use their car, no electricity.
They walk outside to get everywhere. So imagine it's the
middle of the summer and you're walking to like to
go get food or whatever. But that isn't a sign
and honor of rest and respect and whatever. I personally don't.
(13:48):
I personally don't do that part of Sabbath. But there
are days where I give myself a break. I give
myself a chance to like reset, recharge, renew my spirit,
renew my mind. Because rest is is a holy gift.
It is a gift. It is a way to honor
your body and to honor God. And like I mentioned before,
it is so important to take care of your walk
(14:08):
with God and your your spirit because that is you know,
obviously the spirit dwells in us and we have to
take care of it because it's not going to function properly.
Our lives aren't going to function properly if we're not
resting fully resting. So and there's a difference. There's laziness
and there's rest. There's people that are really lazy, and
that is one of the deadly sins. If you don't know,
(14:29):
look it up. But rest is a blessing. It is
a time to honor ourselves and our bodies. And we're
going to get into the Bible Verse of the day
already because it kind of goes hand in hand. It
is Matthew eleven, twenty eight, two thirty and it talks
about it says, come to me, all who are weary, reary,
(14:49):
and burden, and I will give you rest. Take my
yoke upon you. Learn from me, and for I am
gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest
for your soul for my yoke is easy and my
burden is light. So what that means is that God
is inviting us to actually take a break leave everything
in his hands. You guys are so worried about reaching
(15:11):
these certain goals or doing these certain things, when God
is literally telling you, like, don't worry about nothing, rest,
know that I'm gonna be here. Be anxious for nothing,
Give me all your worries, give me all your stress.
I got it. And it's so hard to believe and
see that sometimes because we're believing in something that we
(15:33):
can't see. But that's the thing about faith, you guys,
is that faith is how big is your faith? How
big are you going to believe that God is going
to take you out of where you're at right now?
How big is your faith that God is going to
help you reach your goals, help you reach to that
point that He has already planned. Because the plan that
He has is way bigger than the one we have
(15:53):
in our heads. And where are we hear stress about
this when He's got something bigger and better for us?
So the point is is that rest is holy, Rest
is meant for us. Rest is a gift that we
have to take advantage of God. You're asking me to rest,
you ask me to go to sleep, You're asking me
to sit down, hang out with my family, but actually
(16:15):
be there with my family. Got it cool, Easiest thing
to do if you really think about it. It's just
learning to turn off your mind and changing that perspective. Like, Okay, today,
I don't got to work, Thank you God, I don't
have to worry about this. Worry about it when it's
actually work time. Work hours for example, single mothers or
(16:42):
mothers in general, business owners, whatever, block family time. There
has to be a time for family, family only. No work,
no phone. If you work a nine to five, if
you're like or if you're freelancer. I don't know certain
times of the day, let's say after six pm or
(17:06):
seven pm. I'm not answering any phone calls. I'm not
answering your questions. I'm not this, this or that, like
I need to be locked in. I'm gonna sit down
and watch my favorite TV show, binge, watch whatever, or
dedicate a certain day to rest and recharge. You could
work Monday through Friday. Make sure you give yourself the
weekend to chill. Students, I know that there's a lot
(17:31):
of people that struggle. There's finals, there's things that you
know we have going on. Set a schedule, don't compromise it.
Do not compromise your mental health for a plus plus
in a certain class, have regular breaks, take those mental breaks,
(17:52):
take those reading breaks, and remind yourself and every aspect
and every example that I gave that your worth is
not to find or measured by how much you're doing.
It is not. Your worth is so much different, and
you're designed to rest to give your fullest potential to
(18:15):
be optimic, optimal, you're optimal or your optimized mind, body,
whatever is the best when you are actually resting and
taking a break. We're gonna go on another quick break.
When we come back, we're going to talk about feeling guilty,
wonder you rest, how to overcome it, and more solutions
and balance. So we'll be right back. Welcome back you guys.
(18:37):
I finished my meal, and remember I said I was
going to tell you guys a little trick or hack.
Let's say a hack if you're trying to get more protein.
And first of all, this is one of my comfort meals.
This is just something that fills my heart with joy,
my little with my lit tritas but the is the
(19:02):
sliced hot dog franks the weenies, toast them up, throw
them in there and boom. Trust me, it is so good,
little little tip hack. Personally love it myself. But we're
(19:22):
going to get into the topic of feeling guilty about resting,
feeling unworthy of it. Like I told you, guys, you
are worthy of what is gifted to you, which is rest. Okay, So,
but I understand that sometimes we can feel guilty. And
this is something that I struggled with for a long
(19:43):
long time, where it was like, Okay, I'm not creating
enough content. Oh my god, I'm falling behind. Oh my god,
I'm gonna get canceled. Oh my god, people are gonna
forget about me. How am I going to succeed? Those
are silly thoughts. Those are the thoughts that society pressures
us with. Realistically, I'm not gonna succeed if I don't
(20:04):
have this job, or what are people gonna think of
me here whatever if they see me just sitting down,
or yeah, I know many of us feel guilty. Wonder
your rest. We start to think if I stop working
on fall behind, I should be doing more. Rest is
(20:29):
making me look lazy. Means that I'm lazy. But like
I said, rest is a gift given to us. It
is something we can use as an act of faith
and obedience. And it's also and what I mean about
obedience is literally it means that you're trusting God to
(20:49):
sustain you, to renew your strength, to guide your steps.
I'm gonna rest knowing chilling, God's got me m mm hmmm,
solutions and balance. I will never get tired of saying this.
(21:12):
I will never get tired. I was being on the topic,
but establishing boundaries, and I'm not just talking about with people.
You have to establish boundaries with people in your workspace,
people that you work around, people that you're connected with,
your boss or whatever, but on yourself too. Schedule specific
(21:33):
times for work, for rest, for prayer, and for family.
Rest and prayer kind of go ahead in hand. But
on the daily like, for example, me, I'm not starting
my day. I'm not going to go into my work.
I'm not gonna go check my phone unless I have
thanked God for my day and read my daily chapter
(21:59):
of the Bible. It is part of my walk. It
is part of who I am. I cannot be a
better person without knowing or without learning from somewhere else
or feeding my soul, feeding my spirit unless I read
the Bible. That is also an act of obedience. Family time,
(22:21):
which I know that it could be hard, especially for
example like me, I have a lot of brothers and
sisters where family time gets hard. But make it a priority.
You have to be intentional. You have to be intentional
in the time that you're spending and be intentional and
planning things. It'll mean so much more resting. So rest
(22:44):
can look like just sleeping. It can look like taking
a walk at the park, coming home, ordering food in
because I know sometimes I could be feeling like a
little guilty getting back into your favorite hobbies, reading, taking
a break from the world that you're yeah, taking a
(23:08):
break from the world, taking a break from work, and
not letting any type of work or any type of
other influences influences I said, influences in those designated times.
M I said this before, but prioritizing rest as a
(23:36):
discipline and obedience, when you start switching it and seeing
it as as a gift in honoring God changes the
perspective for you actually sleeping. If you're not getting ample
amount of sleep, it affects your body. It is scientifically proven.
(23:56):
You guys. If you guys don't believe me, go look
it up. How important sleep is. But genuine good sleep
turn off the brain. Take some ashra ganda, take some magnesium,
some sleeping gummies or whatever's gonna help you actually rest
and be calm and be at peace. Because once we're
(24:19):
like still in that work mode, our mind still runs
at night. Trust me, I've been there. I'll be dreaming
of podcast episodes or like doing certain continents. Like no,
like I shouldn't be thinking about this. I should be
having dreams. Bro, I should be having weird dreams that
I don't know. Sometimes I don't even dream and I'm like,
(24:40):
damn no. But it's important to prioritize your sleep, and
it optimizes our body. It helps us function during the day.
What else Practicing self care so like for me and
like I said, I have to do my daily reading.
It's important to me. I also go to the gym.
(25:03):
I eat good foods, good nourishing foods, because once you
reach to a certain level of burnout or you're reaching
that burnout, you start eating so so bad because you
just want to fit whatever you can into the work schedule.
If you into the goals you're trying to reach, you're
filling it with junk food. You're filling it with chipped soda,
(25:23):
fast food. Whatever. No, no, no, no, no, we're not doing that.
We're going to prioritize our body. We're going to prioritize
our mental health and exercise. You guys, I've heard lots
of excuses like that, I don't have time in the day.
You have to make the time. Worry about your body
(25:43):
way more than worrying about your work, because work isn't
gonna last forever. Work this body, how we take care
of it is going to be way more important because
if you end up sick, you're not going to be
able to work. So take care of your body again enough, sleep,
make cobbies, prioritize yourself, and most importantly, no one to
(26:08):
say no. Other people's responsibility is not yours to carry.
You are responsible of your own things. You're responsible of again,
your body. But it is okay to say no. You
already have a lot of workload, you already have a
lot going on. Just be like, you know what, I
(26:30):
can't today, I can't tomorrow, I can't. And it's Okay,
you don't have to feel guilty about that, because what
others do or what other people if they need certain
things or their irresponsibilities is not your responsibility. But yeah,
you guys, these are things that I've had to learn.
These are things that I've experienced in my own life,
(26:52):
things that I've noticed in my family. If you want
to bring that curse, if you want to better your life,
you have to recognize these patterns and recognize real and
what matters. Family matters, your heart matters, and your mental
(27:13):
health matters. And that is going to be long lasting
than anything else, and ultimately is trusting the plan that
God has for your life and knowing that He's going
to have your back no matter what. So yeah, that
is my Ted talk. That is my podcast talk for
(27:35):
