Speaker 1 (00:00):
Today, I'm from his heart with Pastor Jeff Shreeve some
wise advice to heed during trials and temptations.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Keep back, thy servant, it says in Psalms from presumptuous sins,
that sins where you sin with a high hand, where
you shake your fist in the face of God. So
to speak and say, God, this is just what I'm
gonna do, and what are you gonna do about it?
That's the height of arrogance before the Lord. He's not
gonna bless you and your sin. You want God to
bless you, then get on blessing ground, start doing what

(00:28):
he says, because sin has consequences, and God's will for
you is sexual purity.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
So don't be deceived.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
What can detour your dreams faster than just about anything,
it is succumbing to temptation. And there are few temptations
as strong as those revolving around sexual immorality. Joseph in
the Old Testament experienced sexual temptation, but he emerged victorious.
But many others in the Bible experienced that temptation and

(01:25):
they didn't fare as well at all. Are you struggling
with untamed sexual temptation today? You've selected a great day
to join Pastor Jeff Shreeve on from his heart as
we learn about the power of God from the life
of Joseph to overcome trials and temptations. That's the name
of the lesson today. We're hearing part two today. It's

(01:47):
from Pastor Jeff's seven message series Dreams and Detours Lessons
from the Life of Joseph. Now, if you miss part
one from last time, you can go online to Fromishart
dot org to listen to it there and download a
pre MP three of that broadcast as well as the

(02:08):
But first we'll do some catching up from last time,
So open your Bible to the thirty ninth chapter of
the Book of Genesis. Here's Pastor Jeff Shreeve with a
lesson that will help us all during trials and temptations.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Now we have been studying the life of Joseph, and
Joseph was a man who faced temptation. He faced temptation
in lots of different areas. He said no to those temptations.
He trusted God and he found himself as a slave
in Egypt, and he rose to the very top of
the heap.

Speaker 4 (02:40):
And he was potter.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
First personal slave, who is over everything in Potterphar's house.
And Potiphar was a big wheel, he was a big dog.
He was Pharaoh's personal bodyguard. And then in Genesis thirty nine,
Joseph is going to face sexual temptation the rust of
the flesh.

Speaker 4 (03:02):
I'll begin reading in verse six.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
So he left everything he owned in Joseph's charge, and
with him there he did not concern himself with anything
except the food, which he ate. Now, Joseph was handsome
in form and appearance verse seven. And it came about
after these events that his master's wife, Potiphar's wife looked
with desire at Joseph, and she said, lie with me.

(03:26):
But he refused and said to his master's wife, behold
with me here. My master does not concern himself with
anything in the house, and he has put all that
he owns.

Speaker 4 (03:35):
In my charge.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
There is no one greater in this house than I,
and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because
you're his wife. How then could I do this great
evil and sin against God? And it came about, as
she spoke to Joseph day after day, that he did
not listen to her, to lie beside her or be

(03:57):
with her. Now it happened one day that he went
into the house to do his work, and none of
the men of the household was there inside. And she
caught him by his garment, saying, lie with me. And
he left his garment in her hand, and fled and
went outside. And when she saw that he had left
his garment in her hand and fled outside, she called

(04:18):
to the men of her household, and she said to them, see,
he has brought in a Hebrew to make sport of us.
He came in to me to lie with me, and
I screamed. And it came about when he heard that
I raised my voice and screamed that he left his
garment beside me, and fled and went outside. So she
left his garment beside her until his master came home.

(04:40):
Then she spoke to him with these words, that Hebrew's slave,
whom you brought to us, came in to make sport
of me. And it happened as I raised my voice
and screamed, that he left his garment beside me and
fled outside.

Speaker 4 (04:53):
Now it came about when his master.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying,
this is what your slave did to me.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
That his anger burned.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
So Joseph's master took him and put him into the jail,
the place where the king's prisoners were confined, and he
was there in the jail. What can we learn from
Joseph so that you and I can walk in victory
over this big, huge problem in our world today? Three
insights I want you to see from this passage. Insight

(05:23):
number one, temptations of the flesh are a part of life,
and no one is immute, the Bible says in Galatians
chapter five, verse nineteen. Now the deeds of the flesh
are evident, which are immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy,

(05:44):
outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and
things like these.

Speaker 4 (05:52):
The deeds of the flesh and the loss of the flesh.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
It encompasses a lot of things, and so the pull
to those things for you, it might not be sexual immorality,
but it might be outburst of anger, It might be drunkenness,
It might be drugs, It might be idolatry. It might
be jealousy, it might be hatred. Temptation hits hardest when
things are going well. Look what it says in verse seven.

(06:15):
And it came about after these events that his master's
wife looked with desire at Joseph, and she said, lie
with me. After what events, After Joseph rose through the
ranks of the slaves to become the number one slave
and become.

Speaker 4 (06:30):
Over all of Potiphar's house.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
Second thing to notice, temptation comes to us on a
regular basis, especially the sexual temptation. And it came about
as she spoke to Joseph day after day, that he
did not listen to her to lie beside her or
be with her. And notice number three, temptation is not
to be confused with sin.

Speaker 4 (06:54):
It's not a sin to be tempted.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
It's not a sin for Joseph to have poti Phar
wife on a daily basis say lie with me. It's
not a sin to be tempted. It's not a sin
in the bait, it's a sin in the bike. So
temptations of the flesh are a part of life.

Speaker 4 (07:11):
No one is immune.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
Second insight, temptations of the flesh are defeated with the truth.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
So how do you stay pure?

Speaker 2 (07:22):
Well, Jesus said, you shall know the truth, and the
truth shall make you free John eight thirty two. So
temptations of the flesh are defeated with the truth. Hey,
we need to know the truth. Sexual immorality is a
great evil. Now I want everyone this will be a
good little exercise. I want everyone to say that with me.
Sexual immorality is a great evil.

Speaker 4 (07:45):
Do you believe that? Good? I believe it too.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
Doesn't mean it still doesn't have a strong pull. But
you need to know this is not a little thing.
This is a big thing. Secondly, sexual immorality, we're talking
about the truth here, will wreck and ruin your life.
It's a great evil. And with great evil come great consequences,

(08:10):
and it will bring devastation into your life. Scripture says this,
but the man who commits adultery is an utter fool.
For he destroys himself, he will be wounded and disgraced.
His shame will never be erased. Man, that sounds rough,

(08:31):
doesn't it. Where's the ambulance? Where's the grace? Here?

Speaker 4 (08:34):
This is a guardrail scripture.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
This is to say, don't do that, because you're not
going to like what happens. It is going to cost
you big time.

Speaker 4 (08:44):
Be sure.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
The scripture says, your sin will find you out. Well,
it can't be wrong. If it feels so right, it
is wrong, and it will wreck and ruin you. Scripture
says in Hebrews chapter thirteen, verse four, let the marriage
bed be undefiled for fornicators, those who aren't married and
have sex.

Speaker 4 (09:05):
Let's pretend we're married.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
Those folks fornicators and adulterers, those who are married and
have sex outside of their marriage. God will judge. God
will judge. This is a great evil and it comes
with a great price tag. And truth Number three Gods
will for you is sexual purity.

Speaker 3 (09:26):
So don't be deceived.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
See some people they just say, well, you know, God
wants me to be happy.

Speaker 4 (09:32):
That's their theology.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
Their theology is, well, God just wants everybody to be happy.

Speaker 4 (09:37):
He wants me to be happy. He doesn't have any standards.
He's just a big ball of mush.

Speaker 2 (09:41):
He's the big mush God with no standards at all,
And so he just wants to be happy. So I
can do whatever I want and God will approve it,
and God will bless it and God will blow kisses
at me because I'm.

Speaker 4 (09:51):
His little darling.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
Bullooney. First, Thessalonians, chapter four. Look what the scripture says.
This couldn't be clearer. It is God's will that you
keep away from sexual sin as a mark of your
devotion to him. Each of you should know that finding
a husband or wife for yourself is to be done
in a holy and honorable way, not in the passionate,

(10:16):
lustful way of people.

Speaker 4 (10:17):
Who don't know God.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
No one should take advantage of or exploit other believers
that way. The Lord is the one who punishes people
for all these things We've already told you and warned
you about.

Speaker 4 (10:30):
This. God didn't call us to be sexually moral, but
to be holy. Therefore, whoever rejects.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
This order is not rejecting human authority, but God, who
gives you his holy spirit.

Speaker 4 (10:45):
That couldn't be any more clear.

Speaker 2 (10:48):
This is the will of God your sanctification, that is,
that you abstain from sexual immorality. You know, the Bible
talks about that in Numbers chapter fifteen, but it talks
about sinning with a high hand.

Speaker 4 (11:00):
Back thy servant.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
It says in Psalms from presumptuous sins, that sins where
you sin with a high hand, where you shake your
fist in the face of God, so to speak, and say, God,
this is just.

Speaker 4 (11:10):
What I'm gonna do, and what are you gonna do
about it?

Speaker 2 (11:13):
It's a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of
the living God when God tells you don't do this
and you say, Hey, I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna
do whatever I want. And furthermore, God, not only am
I gonna do what I want, but I'm gonna expect
you to bless me in this sin. That's the height
of arrogance before the Lord. He's not gonna bless you

(11:35):
in your sin. You want God to bless you, then
get on blessing ground.

Speaker 4 (11:38):
Start doing what he says.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
Because sin has consequences and God's will for you of
sexual purity.

Speaker 4 (11:45):
Don't be deceived.

Speaker 2 (11:47):
And when sexual temptation grabs you, as it grab Joseph,
flee it.

Speaker 4 (11:51):
Don't fight it.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
Flee it, don't fight it. What did he do? It
says in verse ten. And it came about as she
spoke to Joseph day after that he did not listen
to her, to lie beside her or be with her.
Now it happened one day. This is probably a plan
that she had at missus predator. It happened one day
that he went into the house to do his work,
and none of the men of the household was there inside.

(12:14):
Uh oh, And she caught him by his garment. Joseph
always had trouble with his coat, and she caught him
by his garment, saying, lie with me. And he left
his garment in her hand and fled and went outside. Listen,
when you're tempted in the area of sexual immorality, the
Bible never tells you to fight it. It tells you

(12:36):
to flee it. It tells you to flee it. When
that grabs a hold of you. You need to do
what Joseph did. And he wiggled out of his coat
and he got out of there. Why because it's too
strong to fight, So you have to flee. Flee immorality.
Flee youthful luss. Don't fight it, flee it. You know,

(12:59):
some people are pretty stupid when it comes to how
to deal with sexual immorality.

Speaker 4 (13:06):
Some men, if they had been in.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
Joseph's shoes, and you'd have Potiphar's wife day after day,
Lie with me, Lie with me, lie with me, and
finally she grabbed him, lie with me.

Speaker 4 (13:13):
They would have said, now.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
Missus potiphar, listen, let's we need to talk about this.
We need to pray, and so let's kneel down by
your bed uh and pray and I'll pray, and then
that will give you time to quit nibbling my ear
and so we'll just pray. That doesn't work like that.
You can't do that. You're just in the heat of

(13:35):
it all. And man, it's a slippery slope. You got
to get out of there. Flee immorality and flee. I
would encourage you to flee to an accountability partner, somebody
that you can talk to, somebody that you can say, man,
I'm so tempted by this person, pray for me, help me.
Scripture says, confess your sins to one another and pray
for one another. Why so that you may be healed

(13:58):
temptations of the flesh, feeded with the truth. And then
third insight, sexual purity does not produce immediate results. It
doesn't produce instant promotion, blessing, favor from God in outward sense.

(14:22):
So what did she do? What did missus p do?
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. And when
you're a trophy wife and you're throwing yourself at the
Hebrew boy Joe, and he says no, no, no, and
you grab him and he runs away from you at
wounds your ego a little bit. And so she's like,

(14:45):
I'm gonna fix his wagon. And so she holds onto
his coat and she begins to scream, and she tells
everybody this Hebrew.

Speaker 4 (14:52):
Came in to try and rape me.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
And she kept the coat with her until Potiphar's mister
Potiphar got home, and then she tells Potiphar, this is
what your servant tried to do to me. And Potiphar's
anger burned against Joseph. Potiphar is not the kind of
guy you want to fool around with.

Speaker 4 (15:12):
He's the captain of the bodyguard of Pharaoh.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
He's killed lots and lots of people, and all of
a sudden, now he really mad at Joseph, and Joseph
hadn't done anything. And what does he do. He throws
him in prison. Now he probably questioned his wife's story
a little bit, otherwise Joseph would have been dead. But
he it's my wife. He's always going to side with

(15:37):
his wife. So he's like, yeah, honey, he's a terrible guy.
I'm gonna put him in prison. And so he does
puts him in prison, and Joseph is in prison. His
head is spinning. He's like, what in the world, I
haven't done anything. I got put in a pit, then
I got sold into slavery, and then I was lied
about by Potiphar.

Speaker 4 (15:55):
Now I'm in prison. Man, lord, what's the deal here?
You mark it down.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
You will pay a price for purity. It'll cost you
to maintain your purity. People will laugh at you, people
will make fun of you, especially at school. People will
leave you out of events and activities. Oh, we don't
want to invite that guy. We don't want to invite

(16:23):
that girl. There's such a prude, and just the reverend
who wants to bring the reverend. You're gonna it's gonna
be lonely. And the scripture makes that clear.

Speaker 4 (16:32):
For Moses. What did Moses do?

Speaker 2 (16:34):
Moses endured ill treatment with the people of God, rather
than to choose the passing pleasures of sin.

Speaker 4 (16:40):
Man.

Speaker 2 (16:40):
If Joseph had just said, all right, missus, p you've
broken me down here, I am let's go for it. Well,
he wouldn't have ended up in prison. He probably wouldn't
have ended up in the palace either. It pays, It'll
cost you, You'll pay a price. I had a godly
young man tell me. He said, I had a girlfriend,

(17:02):
and I determined not to have sexual relationship with my girlfriend,
and she was wanting me to and she ended up
cheating on me with somebody else, and that was a
big cause of it, because I wouldn't have sex with her.

Speaker 4 (17:17):
Well, it's good riddance, but it.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
Still hurts, still hurts, And there's loneliness.

Speaker 3 (17:23):
Man.

Speaker 2 (17:23):
When I was in college, young Christian the University of Texas,
all my buddies were out on the weekends Friday and
Saturday night.

Speaker 4 (17:30):
What were they doing. They were out getting drunk, and
they were out chasing girls.

Speaker 2 (17:34):
And I knew I can't go out there with them
because that's too much temptation for me. And so I
was at home doing calculus on Friday night. Nerd alert.
I mean, what kind of guy does that? The guy
that wants to keep pure, That's what.

Speaker 4 (17:50):
Kind of guy does that. It costs.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
You will pay a price, But secondly, you will please
the Lord. So Joseph's Master took him and put him
into the jail verse twenty the place where the king's
prisoners were confined. And he was there in the jail,
and he lost everything, and he thought, I'm never getting
out of here verse twenty one. But the Lord was
with Joseph and extended kindness to him and gave him

(18:14):
favor in the sight of the chief jailer. And the
chief jailer committed to Joseph's charge all the prisoners who
were in the jail, so that whatever was done there,
he was responsible for it. The chief jailer did not
supervise anything under Joseph's charge, because the Lord was with him,
and whatever he.

Speaker 4 (18:27):
Did, the Lord made to prosper.

Speaker 2 (18:29):
Hey, little Joe, you might have lost your position with Potiphar,
and you might have lost your hope for freedom and
any kind of opportunity. But you didn't lose me. You
pleased me, and you honored me. And the one who
honors God says him, will I honor. And the Lord
was with Joseph, and the Lord blessed Joseph.

Speaker 4 (18:49):
And listen, when.

Speaker 2 (18:50):
Joseph got sent to Potiphar's house as a seventeen year
old boy, he said, I'm gonna trust God, and I'm
gonna bloom where I where he planned me. And he
became the number one slave in all the Potiphar's house.
And when he got sent to prison, what did he say?
He had to deal with He's human being. You know
you cut him, he's gonna bleed. He had to work
through all the I gotta now not be bitter toward

(19:11):
Potiphar's wife because I've been praying that she'd get hit
with a chariot. So he's got to work through all
of that. And what does he do. I'm gonna bloom
more on planet. And he becomes the number one trustee
in the whole prison house because the Lord was with Joseph.
As for me, the scripture says, the nearness of God
is my good because Joseph chose to please God. Man,

(19:34):
that's the greatest thing. You want to know, the greatest.

Speaker 4 (19:37):
Thing that you can do, It's to please God.

Speaker 2 (19:41):
Bible says of Enoch, he's the first one who never
tasted death.

Speaker 4 (19:46):
He was not for God took him.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
But before God took him, he obtained this testimony that
he pleased God. And wouldn't it be great if that
was your testimony? That you pleased God. Joseph pleased God,
and the Lord was with.

Speaker 3 (19:58):
Him, and God's hand was upon him.

Speaker 2 (20:00):
And God said, Joseph, everybody may be against you, but
I saw what you did with Potiphar's wife, and I
saw how you ran, and I saw how you said
you would not sin against me, and.

Speaker 4 (20:10):
I am proud of you. Boy. I'm proud of you.

Speaker 2 (20:14):
You'll please the Lord, and then you'll prepare yourself for
future promotion. What is going to happen in Joseph's life?
Is God gonna leave him here?

Speaker 4 (20:23):
I don't know how long he was in prison.

Speaker 2 (20:26):
He's in there at least two years, probably more like
three or four.

Speaker 4 (20:30):
But God has a plan for him.

Speaker 2 (20:32):
The Lord was with Joseph in God's hand, A blessing
was upon Joseph. But God didn't tell Joseph what was
coming down the pike. He just said, trust me, trust me.

Speaker 4 (20:47):
Listen.

Speaker 2 (20:48):
We talked about some hard things today, and I know
there are lots of people in here.

Speaker 4 (20:54):
And you failed morally.

Speaker 2 (20:57):
You failed with fornication, you failed with adultery, you failed
with homosexuality, you failed in some sexual area, you failed
with pornography.

Speaker 4 (21:06):
You failed.

Speaker 2 (21:08):
Listen, you take the you out of failure. You are
not a failure. You may have failed, but you are
not a failure. And there is an ambulance at the
bottom of the hill, and there is God's grace. But
when God comes with his grace and he puts you
back up and back together, he says, now, listen, here's
the guardrail. Here's the guardrail. There's a reason I say

(21:30):
don't do this. It's for your good and it's for
your protection.

Speaker 4 (21:35):
Listen.

Speaker 2 (21:36):
There's grace for the fallen. There's victory for the faithful.
All that you and I would be faithful to the
Lord and we would win in the battle with the flesh.

Speaker 1 (21:53):
May God use this lesson in your life today to
help you defeat those temptations and put you on fire
for the Lord by being a shining example of his
power in your life, to make you a bold witness
for him. In Proverbs chapter twenty eight, verse one, it
tells us the wicked flee when no one is pursuing,

(22:13):
but the righteous are bold as a lion. You see,
in the darkening days in which we live, it is
crucial that God's people step up and speak up for
the King. This month, Pastor Jeff Shreeve encourages us to
take our stand as good soldiers of Christ and boldly
