Speaker 1 (00:05):
Just as God's mercy reflects his love for us, God's
judgment reflects his hatred of sin. Nowhere is this more
evident than during the seven year Tribulation. Today, on turning Point,
doctor David Jeremiah takes us into the next horrific phase
of this painful period so vividly described in Revelation Chapter nine.

(00:27):
Listen as David introduces today's message, Hell on Earth, Part.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
One and thank you for joining us. We're studying the
Book of Revelation. We are now in the ninth chapter
and this is becoming very, very intense as the series
of issues that happen on the Earth during the Tribulation
escalate headed toward armageddon. And today we're going to look
at these verses and I hope that you will follow

(00:53):
along if you have your study guide. This is the
last part of volume two. As you know, we have
four study guides for this series that take thank you
through the entire Book of Revelation. It's self interpreting, and
the study guides will lead you and guides you verse
by verse. If you don't have these, you can get
them from David Jeremiah dot org. Along with the contemporary
commentary on revelation called Escape the Coming Night. Take care

(01:17):
of that right now, and make sure you have those
to go forward in your study of the Final Book.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Of the Bible.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Right now we are ready to start part one of
Hell on Earth.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
I don't suppose that any pastor relishes the thought of
preaching on a passage like this one. It is evident
that many do not want to, and so they pass
over it and they go on to more positive things.
When you talk about the subject of hell in today's world,

(01:53):
you run into a great deal of opposition from people
in ecclesiastical circles. They have decide that hell and all
that is symbolic of it is repulsive, and so after
they decided they don't like it, they have written it.

Speaker 4 (02:08):
Out of their theology. But it is not as easy
as that, is it.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
No one can make a thing untrue simply by determining
not to believe it, believe it or not. The Bible
teaches that there is a place called hell. It is
a literal place, a place that is burning with fire
and brimstone. As we get a glimpse of Hell on Earth,

(02:34):
we will once again be brought face to face with
the most terrifying experience that a man will ever know hell,
not just on earth, but hell for eternity because of
their rejection of Jesus Christ. Before we look briefly at
these few verses, let's review for just a moment so

(02:58):
that we don't get lost in the process of our study.
If you know the future, you know that the next
event on the horizon is the rapture of the Church
of Jesus Christ. Following that moment, when the Church is
taken out of this world in the rapture, we will
begin a period of seven literal years of tribulation upon

(03:19):
this earth. The first three and a half years simply
call the Tribulation, and the last three and a half
referred to as the Great Tribulation. The Great Tribulation will
culminate in the second coming of Christ, this time not
for his saints, but with his saints, and the result

(03:39):
of his coming the second time will be that he
will set up his kingdom on this earth for a
thousand years, and he.

Speaker 4 (03:47):
Will reign as King of kings and Lord of Lords.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
At the end of the millennium or the thousand year
reign of Christ, the Great White Throne, judgment will be
experienced by all those who have rejected Christ finally as
their Lord and savior. At this particular time, in our
study in the Book of Revelation, we are working through
the seven seals that have kept the role, which is

(04:13):
the title deed to the Earth shut up from all viewers.
As we began that study, we saw this scroll in
the hand of God the Father, and the cry went
out throughout heaven. Who is worthy to take the scroll
and to open it? And John saw that there was
but one who was worthy, and that was the Lion

(04:35):
of the tribe of Judah, the Lamb of God. And
Jesus took the scroll and he began to unroll it.
And we have learned as we have studied, that the
ancient scrolls were sealed so that only sections of the
scroll could be revealed, one at a time, each of
the seals unrolling the scroll to unfold more of God's

(04:58):
plan for this earth. We have now gone through all
of the first six seals, and as we have come
to the seventh seal. As you understand, incorporated in the
seventh seal are not only the seven Trumpet judgments, but
also all of the vile or the Bowl judgments. So

(05:18):
in the seventh Seal, which is taken off of the scroll.
There are fourteen increments to the outpouring of judgment upon
this earth. The trumpets are sounded by the Angel, and
then judgment falls upon the earth. When the first trumpet sounded,
the earth itself was assaulted by hail, and the judgment

(05:40):
came upon the physical earth. The second trumpet sounded, and
the salt water sea was infected, and one third of
it was poisoned, so that it was not fit to use.
And the third trumpet sounded, and what had happened to
the salt sea happened to the fresh water supply, so
that one third of the fresh water supply was contaminated.

(06:05):
And the fourth trumpets sounded, and the heavenly bodies were affected,
the Sun and the moon and the stars. God, in
just a few moments of time and just a few
days of time, has totally taken this globe, and in
cataclysmic measures, he has ripped apart the things that had
caused it in pastimes to be stabilized.

Speaker 4 (06:29):
If you remember, at the end of the.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
Eighth chapter, with all of the awfulness of the first
four trumpet judgments, we read in astonishment the thirteenth verse,
the thirteenth verse said this, and I beheld and heard
an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with
a loud voice, woe, woe, woe to the inhabitors of

(06:53):
the earth, by reason of the other voices of the
trumpet of the three Angels, which are yet to sound.
After all of the terrible things that have happened in
the physical world, the angel now says, if you think
what has happened up to this point is bad, get ready,
because the next three trumpets are going to unleash hell

(07:14):
on Earth. And so we begin in the ninth chapter
with this fifth trumpet, Hell on Earth. It is as
if somebody had gone to the prisons of our nation
and unlocked all of the doors and let all of

(07:34):
the criminals in the entire nation loose to roam upon
the streets. Think for a moment of what would happen
if all the prison doors were unlocked, and all of
the evil element that we have chained up were set
free in our society without restraint. And you have not
touched the hem of the garment of what is to

(07:54):
happen in this day of the future. I want us
to look at this passage and say, sections and I'll
just give you this outline that you can write down,
and we'll move through it and try to understand what
it means. First of all, in verse one, we have
presented to us the unnamed personality. The scripture says that

(08:15):
the fifth Angel sounded, and I saw a star fall
from heaven unto the earth, and to him was given
the key of the bottomless pit. Like the fourth trumpet.
We see here a star falling from heaven to the earth.
But this star is different. This star is a human personality.

(08:36):
Notice that the key phrase to him in the first
verse and the personal pronoun he is used in the
second verse. We're not talking here about a star like wormwood.
We're talking about a human personality. It is not unusual
for stars to represent creatures. If you remember, in the

(08:57):
earliest studies that we did in the Book of Revelation,
we pointed out that each of the churches had stars,
and the stars were the angels of the church or
the ministers of the churches. And we made a joke
about ministers being stars and that being the only way
they could ever qualify. So there are illustrations in the
Book of Revelation of stars being actual people. Who is

(09:22):
this unnamed personality that falls to the earth. It is
unquestionably a picture of Satan. For Satan's purpose is to
bring upon this earth all of the evil and pressure
which he can divise. In this time, Satan is given
permission by God to let loose the demons of hell

(09:45):
for a season. He is allowed to open the prison
house of the evil spirits and turn them all loose. Now,
there's an interesting play on words in the text. It
says we saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth. Literally,
the text is expressing that in the perfect tense, and

(10:08):
it is saying, I saw a star.

Speaker 4 (10:12):
Having fallen from heaven unto the earth.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
Now we don't have to do very much digging to
find out who he's talking about.

Speaker 4 (10:19):
The star is none other than Lucifer.

Speaker 3 (10:23):
Isaiah fourteen twelve says, how art thou fallen from heaven,
O Lucifer, son of the Morning? How art thou cut
down to the grave? Who didst weaken the nations? Yet
thou shalt be brought down to sheehole, to the sides
of the pit. There are two times in the Bible

(10:43):
when we are told that Satan is kicked out of
heaven twice he is removed from heaven. The first one
we just read about. And Jesus commented on that in
Luke ten eighteen, when he said, and he said, unto them,
I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.

Speaker 4 (11:02):
Jesus said that.

Speaker 3 (11:04):
Now in Revelation, chapter twelve, turn over there for just
a moment, verses seven to nine, we have the second
instance of Satan falling from heaven.

Speaker 4 (11:14):
And there was war in heaven.

Speaker 3 (11:16):
Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the
dragon fought and his angels and prevailed. Not neither was
their place found anymore in heaven. Now watch this, and
the great dragon was cast out that old serpent called
the devil and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world. And
he was cast out into the earth, and his angels

(11:38):
were cast.

Speaker 4 (11:39):
Out with him.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
Now it is very possible that chapter twelve and its
reference to this angel having fallen from heaven, that chapter
twelve literally fits within chapter nine.

Speaker 4 (11:52):
Let me explain what I mean.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
In the Book of Revelation, there are parenthetical passages. Most
of the book follows like this chronologically, one chapter right
after the other. But do you remember when we studied
chapter seven that we pointed out that chapter seven is
sort of like a mini commentary on one aspect of
the chronological study of the Book of Revelation. A very

(12:17):
interesting fact unfolds is you study the organization of this book.
You have six seals, then you have the seventh chapter,
which is parenthetical. Then you have six trumpets, Then you
have a parenthetical chapter before the seventh trumpet. Then you
have six fials, and then you have another parenthetical chapter

(12:39):
before the seventh. In between the sixth and the seventh judgment,
of the three judgments, there is a parenthetical chapter. And
the best way to explain that is like when you
are reading a book and you're reading the flow of
the story, and then they give you a footnote, and
you follow the footnote and maybe there's two or three

(13:00):
ages of information about some aspect of the story that
you are reading chronologically.

Speaker 4 (13:06):
That's what chapter twelve is about.

Speaker 3 (13:08):
And so it's very likely that chapter twelve is simply
a commentary describing what has happened when Satan falls out
of heaven now and he is releasing the Satanic demons
in the bottomless pit. Now, that is the unnamed personality.

(13:28):
Chapter nine verse one says that a star, having fallen
from heaven, is given the key of the bottomless pit.
That is Satan now, who has been given permission by
God to unlock the pit. And that's point number two,
the unlocked pit.

Speaker 4 (13:46):
Verse two.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
Notice what it says, and he Satan opened the bottomless pit,
and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as
the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and
the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of
the pit. Satan is given permission by God to take
the lid off of the bottomless pit and let all

(14:10):
of the creatures out who have been incarcerated there from
the beginning. Now, in order to understand this, we have
to take a moment to look at this word pit.
The word pit is sometimes translated by the word abyss.
The Greek word is literally abes sauce, the abes sauce

(14:30):
of the earth. This deep pit is the place where
angels were bound in chains after the fall. You think
it's bad with the demon problems we have today, Listen,
not all of the demons are free. Many of the
demons are incarcerated in the pit. Take your bibles, hold

(14:52):
your place in Revelation nine, and turn to chapter eight.

Speaker 4 (14:55):
Of the Book of Luke.

Speaker 3 (14:57):
You remember the story of Jesus cast out the demons
in Gadera, and we read beginning at verse twenty six.
And they arrived at the country of the Gatins, which
is over against Galilee. And when he went forth to land,
there met him out of the city a certain man
which had devils. He was demon possessed for a long time,

(15:19):
and wear no clothes, neither abode in any house but
in the tombs. And when he saw Jesus, he cried
out and fell down before him, and with a loud
voice said, what have I to do with thee Jesus,
thou son of the God Most High?

Speaker 4 (15:33):
I beseech thee torment me not.

Speaker 3 (15:35):
And he commanded the unclean spirit to come out of
the man, for oftentimes it had caught him, and he
was kept bound with chains and in fetters. And he
broke the bands and was driven of the devil into
the wilderness. And Jesus asked him, saying what is thy name?
And he said Legion, because many devils were entered into him.

Speaker 4 (15:54):
Now watch this.

Speaker 3 (15:55):
And the demons besought him that he would not command
to go out into the abbes sauce.

Speaker 4 (16:03):
That's the word.

Speaker 3 (16:04):
They said, Lord, send us anywhere you want to, but
don't send us into the pit. Don't send us back
into captivity where we don't have the freedom to roam.
They didn't care where they were sent, as long as
they were not confined in the bottomless pit, in the
Abba sauce, where the rest of the angels of Satan
are chained. Now turn back to the Book of Revelation,

(16:27):
but not quite stop at the Book of Jude. Don't
ask me what chapter, because there's only one. Here we
have another commentary on the bottomless pit.

Speaker 4 (16:38):
And who is there here?

Speaker 3 (16:40):
We read in verse six of the Book of Jude,
and the angels which kept not their first estate, but
left their own habitation, He God hath reserved in everlasting
chains under darkness, unto the judgment of the Great Day.
Who is in the bottomless sauce in the pit the

(17:01):
angels which left their first estate and violated their position
before God. All right, let me tell you something you
may not be aware of. Those angels that are in
the pit had a special visit from the Lord Jesus
on one occasion. Did you know that Jesus preached to

(17:22):
the angels that were chained in the bottomless pit. Between
his death and his resurrection. He actually went to this
place and proclaimed his victory over.

Speaker 4 (17:32):
Death to the fallen angels.

Speaker 3 (17:35):
Romans Chapter ten, verse seven says, who shall ascend to
the abyss to bring up Christ from the dead. But
turn with me, if you will once again close to
the Book of Revelation to one Peter chapter three, verses
eighteen and nineteen. Now watch carefully what this says for Christ.

(17:56):
Also hath once suffered for sins, the just, for the unjust,
that he might bring us to God, being put to
death in the flesh, but quickened by the spirit by
which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison.
Jesus has already preached these angels, not the message of

(18:17):
the gospel, but necessarily he went and said, I have
overcome death. What you hoped would happen didn't happen. I
am free from death. I am the overcomer. And he
announced to them in person that he won and they lost.

Speaker 4 (18:33):
Seven times.

Speaker 3 (18:34):
In the Book of Revelation you will find the word
abessauce it is always the place of the confined angels
of Satan.

Speaker 4 (18:47):
I want you to understand.

Speaker 3 (18:49):
That the keys of this place were given to Satan
by God. Jesus Christ has control of the bottomless pit.
Satan didn't rest the keys from Christ to go down
and open it up. But Jesus has the keys of
death and hell, and he gave the keys to Satan
so that he could go back and let those powers loose.

(19:11):
I think it's important that we stop for just a
moment and remember that God is the one who holds
back the powers of demons and evil in this day.

Speaker 4 (19:21):
If he did not.

Speaker 3 (19:22):
Hold back these powers, our world would be turned into
a gigantic, insane asylum. But now, because of man's rebellion,
in this last day of the tribulation, God is going
to take the restraint away, and he is going to
allow all evil to be manifested. It reminds me of

(19:43):
what we read in Romans chapter one, when we read
because of their rebellion, God gave them up. Three times
in that chapter we read he gave them up, he
gave them up, he gave them over. In other words,
it's as if God is saying, listen, I have begged you,
I have been sus eached you, I have warned you.

Speaker 4 (20:02):
I have pled with you. I have told you that
judgment is coming.

Speaker 3 (20:06):
I have asked you to repent, and you are rebellious,
and you will not repent. And so what I have
promised is going to happen. And he just takes all
the restraint loose, and Hell belches out upon the earth
all of its evil powers. Now, let's look at verses
two through six, and notice thirdly, the unleashed power of

(20:26):
the pit. We read in Revelation chapter nine, verses two
and three. And when he opened the bottomless split, there
rows of smoke out of the pit. Is the smoke
of a great furnace. And the sun and the air
were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth,
and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the.

Speaker 4 (20:49):
Earth have power.

Speaker 3 (20:52):
Now, the result of Satan unlocking the pit is the
unleashing of all the soot of hell, and the blackness
of evil, and the spiritual plague of demonic proportions, and
millions of demons ascend.

Speaker 4 (21:09):
Out of that pit like a big black cloud of smoke.

Speaker 3 (21:13):
Please do not forget that when Jesus speaks of hell.
He speaks of it as a place that burns with
literal fire. And so we should not be surprised that
as the bottomless pit is uncorked, that out of that pit,
in the most awesome picture that we could pain in
our mind's eye, there ascends this cloud of black smoke.

(21:39):
I don't think we should divorce the cloud of black
smoke from the creatures who ascend out of the pit.
I have never seen locusts in a swarm. I have
seen pictures of it on television. I have seen documentaries
of it. I remember in school one time we saw
a film that show. I have been told that they

(22:03):
actually appear as a cloud of smoke, that the earth
is literally covered with them. And the density of locusts
when they swarm is such that it literally covers the
sun and causes it to appear as if it has
gone dark. And a swarm of locusts can enter a

(22:24):
field and in just a matter of minutes they can
decimate a field of grain, totally consume it, and utterly
destroy it. Now, the Bible says in this chapter that
out of this pit, when the cover is taken off,
creatures like locusts come out upon the earth. Who are

(22:45):
these locusts. Well, they're not real locusts. We can tell
that for sure, because they don't eat vegetable productions. Notice
it says verse four it was commanded them that they
should not hurt the grass of the earth nor any
green thing. And then, thirdly, if you study the plague
of the locusts back in the time of Moses and

(23:08):
the Exodus, in Exodus, chapter ten and verse fourteen, after
the plague of the locusts, we are told that the
plagues of Egypt and the plagues of the locusts would
never be repeated again. There would never be anything like that. Again,
we're not talking here about literal locusts. What we are
talking about in this chapter is the attempt by the

(23:29):
Spirit of God to somehow picture for us demon activity
upon this earth during the tribulation period. These are literal creatures,
demons who have taken on this outward expression. They are
representing animals like the lion, the horse, the scorpion, the man,

(23:51):
the locusts.

Speaker 2 (23:54):
We have more of this riveting discussion tomorrow as we
conclude our discussion of this section of scripture. I hope
you'll be with us as we continue our stroll through
the Book of Revelation. Hey, don't forget we're going to
New England here in a few days. In the month
of October, we will be sailing on Holland America Zyderdam
October fourth through the eleventh. We're going to visit some

(24:16):
wonderful places. I've done this tour before and it's one
of my favorites. Strangers that may seem because it's right
here in our own country, but it's in a place
where many people never go and they miss out on
the beauty of the New England scenery and the history
of the area. So if you can go with us,
we love it. We're going to have Michael Sanchez and
Uriel Vega and other friends with us, and you can

(24:37):
find out all about it at David Jeremiah Dott Org.
Please go there today and make your reservation. We'll look
forward to seeing you in October, and thanks for listening today.
We'll be back tomorrow as we continue to discover the
