Coming September 3rd, Rebel Spirit is a brand new podcast series from Akilah Hughes (Crooked Media’s “What a Day”) about her return to her small town of Florence, Kentucky with a mission to change her high school’s mascot from a Confederate General into a Biscuit. Through conversations with local students and parents, and interviews with experts on everything ranging from mascot design to the history of the Confederacy, Rebel Spirit endeavors to make the process of correcting historic wrongs less of a bummer.

Hi. I'm Akila Hughes, and I'm so excited about my
new podcast, Rebel Spirit, where I head back to my
hometown in Kentucky and try to convince my high school
to change their racist mascot the Rebels into something everyone
in the South loves. The Biscuits.

team after a WaterTower.

John Alexander Way, that's the guy individual that came to
the school saying that God sent him to talk to
me about the mascot switch. Is a leader who choose
hills that you want to die on.

There's a safe way to reveal a mascot. They went
in the opposite direction.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
They are called segregation academies. When the Civil Rights said
that we need to integri public schools, these charter schools
were exempt from that.
Speaker 7 (01:03):
Why would we want to be the losing team. I
just take all the other stuff out of it. We're
rocking the team with the helm.

The chair of Mom's ce Liberties is one of the
board members.
