Speaker 1 (00:00):
M M. Welcome to Induction Vault, a production of I
Heart Radio and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
M Imagine how wonderful it feels to have one of

(00:35):
your heroes senior praises. That's what Chrissie Hynd experienced when
Neil Young inducted her and her band The Pretenders into
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in two thousand five.
In his entirely improvised speech, Neil eloquently expresses his love
for The Pretenders, proclaiming them one of the greatest rock
and roll bands ever, inciting them as an influence on

(00:57):
him and his own band, Crazy Horse. Chrissie's acceptance speech
is brief but poignant, asserting that the Pretenders are now
a quote tribute band that pays tribute to their original
band members who have both passed away. Guitarist James Honeyman
Scott and bassist Pete Barndon. Drummer Martin Chambers expresses thanks
for the honor of induction and reminiscence about touring America

(01:20):
for the first time with this old bandmates. Thank you,
thank you. It's a great honor to be here and
uh I enjoy your company every time I come here,
see you people all the time. It's great. I'm running

(01:44):
for office. No, really, I'm very honored. I'm very happy
to be here to talk a little bit out the
pretenders who had a great influence on myself and my
band Crazy Horse. Uh yeah, when we couldn't figure out

(02:05):
what to do, we used to put on those records
and listen to them and go, Okay, they got who's
what she looked like? You know, this was or something
And anyway, they had a huge impression on me. I
I obviously you can look at my I don't have
any notes. I yeah, but there's I don't know what

(02:25):
to say on her there. This is one of the
greatest rock and roll bands that ever lived. They went
through all of the heartache that rock and roll was
built on. They lost two key members and they never
gave up. They kept going and they nothing would stop him.
And and Chrissy is she She's a rock and roll woman.
She's got it in her heart. She's gonna be rock

(02:46):
until she drops. And I love her and Martin great
drama that's always been there with her. And those of
you who are in bands and who front bands, you
know what it's like. To have a great drummer who's
always with you, and what a great feeling that is,

(03:07):
and and to have these people with you so uh.
You know, sometimes in these bands we make so much
out of the lead singer, you know, we make the
lead singer the big thing. And actually our business we
try to destroy some bands by by pulling these people
out and trying to make them something they are and
they're really part of a rock and roll band. And
and I'm sure that Chrissy had a lot of people

(03:29):
trying to get her to take a step somewhere else,
but she never did because she's a true rocker and
playing with a great rock and roll band and she
just can't get enough. And you can tell every time
she walks on the stage. I'm very proud just to
know her. And it's it's uh, my pleasure and distinct
honor to induct the Pretenders into the Rock and Roll

(03:51):
Hall of Fame. For the break we'll hear the Pretenders
accepted speeches on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
induction belt. Okay, well, I know the Pretenders have looked

(04:12):
like a tribute band for the last twenty years, and
actually they are a tribute tribute band, and and we're
paying tribute tonight to James Sun even Scott and Pete Farndon,
without whom we wouldn't be here m now. On the
other hand, without us, they might have been here. Um.

(04:34):
But that's uh, that's the way it works in rock
and roll. But I all I really have to say
about it is two notes, boom boom, boom boom, never change,
never change it. He just keep moving, but never change.
Mark you having to add to that correct at least

(04:54):
he's going to be a bit of a difficult pleasure. Uh.
Twenty five years ago tonight, we were playing on our
third show in America on the first US tour in
a place called Syracuse in the state of New York.
It's called Uncle Sam's in case you were there, and

(05:17):
we tore up the country a couple of times that year.
A couple of weeks after that, Jim and are in
the front of the converted greyhound bus the middle of
the night, exotic booze and he looked out the window
and he said, acrossing the Mississippi his Hank Williams on

(05:38):
the radio, and I mean, yeah, and we're from Harringford.
It was a great moment like this is tonight for
jim and Pete from a little market town in England
on the west side on the Welsh borders. I think
somebody on table fifteen might know where that is. And
it's a pleasure, It really is a pleasure. There's few people,

(06:00):
extra special people to thank. It's a pleasure to have
Jimmy's sister here to night, Lynd Scott and Dave Hill,
David our original manager. Remember Stan Tippins there on the
road guys, you know, and well, there's a lot of
people to think. I'd like to thank Mick Green. Mick

(06:22):
Green was it was still a great guitar player, has
been playing over over forty years with a Bank of
the Pirates, and he helped us out at a very
difficult time when we were looking for somebody to do
the impossible step into the shoes as somebody like James
Turneyman Scott. Well we managed to continue. And I'd like

(06:45):
to thank a lot more people, especially the drummers who
sat in my seat kept it warm. Thank you very much. Yeah, well,
Martin was playing crap for a while and I had
this a true to the music. So I'd like to
thank Blair Cunningham for filling in for a few years.

(07:05):
Martin could be excuse for being um part of the
Sunny and Share shop back away from the Drummer and
Robbie McIntosh and Malcolm Foster certainly not a great lineup
of ours. Pretty warrel T M. Stevens. There's a lot

(07:26):
of people to thank and get over it. Okay, We're
gonna play some some songs I'd like to thank. I'd
like to thank Andy Hobson and Adam Seymour were claimed
the last fifteen years and making my life more funny
it really should be. And I'd like to thank Christie

(07:46):
especially for making my life really interesting. Thank you, thank you,
thank you. Thanks for joining us on this week's episode
