Speaker 1 (00:00):
Our nation loves true crime and it's no wonder. In

(00:07):
the past decade, wanting four Americans have reported being victims
of crime. But what happens when we survive? That's what
we explore in the podcast Survivor's Heal, hosted by me
Oya L. Charel's. I've worked as an organizer, activist and
advocate for the past fifteen years, and for the past

(00:30):
five years I've been on the ground floor providing services
to survivors of crime. I invite you all to listen
in as we discuss the healing side of true crime
and what I call the new Survivor's Movement. It's a
movement that centers healing and speaks truth to power. In
order to talk about healing in the station, we have

(00:53):
to discuss law enforcements impacts on survivors. So I sit
down with courageous investigative journalists Reese Castle. Things would be better,
but we know that there is this fifty year history
of abused in the Sheriff's department as well, and it's
really metastasized to one of the most dangerous deputy gangs
in Los Angeles County. I also get the chance to

(01:16):
speak with those near and dear to me, like one
of the lead pioneers of the movement, Achila Cherrells, who
also happens to be my dad, because we were like.
Survivor says that a person has had an experience and
conceivably they don't want it to happen to anybody else,
and that they're engaged in their respective union journey. I

(01:38):
talked to everyday survivors like my grandmama is Judy. We
discussed the political and philosophical framework of the New Survivor's Movement,
offering resources and complementary strategies to public safety. So it
wasn't just the police that you had family members out
there looking to me. Listen to Survivor's Hill starting November
