Speaker 1 (00:10):
Is it about that time? Though? All right, what I'll
ring the bell let the people know.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
I gotta ring the bell extra loan because you know,
when you ring the bell, they just let them know
that the black market is opening. This money on the floor.
And since you know how to get that money, I
heard you are that lady guy.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
That comes to getting that one more for you cause
you got a book too. You got a you got
books teaching people.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
How to go to college with they all right, now
let me do this because you got a long intro. Okay,
because you got a lot of competens, Ladies and gentlemen.
Welcome back to the Black Market, presented and sponsored in
part by Black People world Wide and the eighty five
staff show affiliates. And today I have a very special

(01:02):
guest in the Black Market with us today. She's uh,
an author, an idealist, a revolutionary woman, a right that
has cracked the code of the matrix of how to
get this paper. And you know, I'm always excited to

(01:25):
be around some people who know how to do shit
like this. So none other than Ms Jessica Brown. Now look,
you gotta look, this is a whole lot of stuff.
This lady does it? Oh, she has a book. She
is the president of the College Girl Foundation. You been

(01:46):
you got the tour College Girl's First College Tour.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
That's uh the name of the book.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
You're educating families on how to make the best informed decisions,
you know, and around financing uh college education. They call
you the financial a fairy Godmother. Yes, that's dope. Yeah,
So give the people a brief introduction of some of
the other things that you do and let them know
what we're dealing with today.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
All right, Well, I'm Jessica Brown. I'm also known as
College Girl and the Financial a fairy Godmother. I'm out
here sprinkling all my magic on the world and brilliant
black minds, making sure that they have an opportunity to
see college as a goal or live out their professional endeavors.
Might As a author, philanthropists, entrepreneur, educational news reporter, I
have the opportunity to make sure I helps people around

(02:33):
the nation navigate the seas of how to get this
paper right. You know what I'm saying, to go to
college and have financial freedom post graduation. But with that
and teaching people how to pay for college, I said,
you know what, I can't peach people how to pay,
and I'm not taking them, right, So I started doing
college tours. I we wrap my face and all the
pr brilliant black kids' faces on the bus and we
rolle to different colleges across the country.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
We go to HBCU homecoming events every month. I mentor
them and I give them scholarships. I've granted over seventy
five thousand dollars in scholarships since twenty eighteen.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
Yeah, out of your helping black children go to school.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yeah that's me, I know, I know, Brandon and them
proud of you.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
So what was your inspiration and how did you find
yourself becoming you know, the financial aid fairy godmother.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
Well, my inspiration was one after college. My mom was like,
you need a job. You know I wanted to be
a journalist, right, And I was like, alright, I had
to get a job paying my bills. So I started
working in financial aid at different schools and then just
having friends, you know of mine that weren't able to
graduate from college. You know, I'm a prior graduate of
Howard University and seeing thank you, and see how some

(03:48):
of my friends go home for five hundred dollars a
thousand dollars, you know, back to the South Side of
cho Chicago. You know, not being able to make their
educational endeavors come true and be able to go back
to school and finish. You know, that was personal for me.
You know. So if I could be a vessel and
a bridge to help s people and understand how to
do it so that they can get their education, why not?
Having the education is the easiest way into the middle class.

(04:11):
And you know, as long as you have a education,
Oh we gotta.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
Let that breed.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Yeah, let it breathe.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Just let that sit for a second. Uh huh, keep going.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
And you know education, as long you have education, you
can never be controlled. You know, every day is about
l learning. You know, even if you don't have a
formal type of college education, you need to do something right,
you know. And I'm that girl to make sure that
you do whatever you wanna do and become the next
future leader tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
Okay, so where do we start with the books?

Speaker 3 (04:38):
So this is my first book, How to Pay for
College when You're Broke? Yes, the title, yeah, because my
mom let me know, you broke. You know what I'm saying.
So if you want to go to school, yeah, I exactly,
you know. So I had nothing, So she was like,
you need to figure it out. And I realized every
year over a hundred million dollars in scholarship money goes unclean.
You know. But the problem is we living in the
wrong world. We gotta stop scrolling and start doing the

(04:59):
same research we doing to find wigs and shoes and
whatever else is the same research you do to find
money for college. So I figured I put that in
a book, and then from there I wanted to touch
elementary school kids. So I came out with College Girls
First College Chort, which is a children's book. It got
an activity guy, you know, and it's all about how Yeah,

(05:20):
I got activities in there, word search, a letter in
there called Dear Future me to where I want young
kids to begin to think about their futures and understand
that their future is bright. You know. We focus so
much on uh kids in middle school and high school,
but we forget to get them when they're younger, cause
that's the best way to mold them, you know, when
they're in elementary school. So, yeah, that's a college girl.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
It's dope. Now, how to pay for college when you broke?
How do you do that.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
It's easy. It's being wonderful. It is easy cause whatever
you want, you gonna go get right. So you know
the researchers out there. So you wanna make sure that
you are doing your free application for Federal student aid early,
which is the fasta applying for scholarships. You know, there's
internships that come with scholarships. There's a lot of different
academic programs if you keep your grades up that you'll

(06:10):
be able to enter. You know, that will allow you
to not have to pay a full cost of you know,
college tuition. So there's a lot of different things out
there's just we wait to the last minute to try
to figure it out.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
Who put you up on the information? Me?

Speaker 3 (06:24):
Yeah, I saw that there was a whole right. You
got people that's out here just talking about oh, how
to just go to college admission wise or scholarships. It
ain't that one person that's wrapping this all up together
as a package. M It's like starting a business. There's
no real guide to everything you need to do to
start an LLC. You just gotta figure it out as
you go. So I figured that with college, and that's
what I did.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
I gotta I gotta get this book for my son.
He gonna be going to school yeah in l in
a few years, and he needs to know that. He
gonna need to know this cause he is probably gonna
be broken, right Yeah. I mean I'm not gonna be used,
cause I want I want'em to start out on this world.
You know, as a as a real black man, you

(07:04):
gotta start off broke. That's the only way you gonna
make it.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
Got some s.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
We have to raise our boys different and cause a
black man being broke helps you develop down. It's the
second phase of maturity. Yeah. So I'm digging it though.
So what can we keep up with you and catch
up with you and get in touch with the program.
Cause you give away money every year? Y, how do
you pick your recipients?

Speaker 3 (07:33):
It all do potends? So one, you know, with me
being the president of the College Girl Foundation, not my
own kids that I mentor so automatically all those kids,
as long as they're college bound, they get scholarships. But
recently I had an amazing partnership with Dark and Lovely
where we granted over fifty scholarships to females around the nation.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
Right d uh.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
With the building beautiful futures, campaign I been.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
I don't mean to cut you off, but a lot
of people like who have programs and things that they're
doing with the kids, is like they always say that
they need it's not necessarily the neat resources, but networking also, Like,
so where can people reach you for these opportunities? You know,
it's other people out there that who don't have a
platform as big as you, right who may wanna you

(08:15):
know what I mean?

Speaker 3 (08:16):
Start. I'm a Instagram at college Girl g u r

Speaker 2 (08:45):

because you owning something big, and you owning something great,
And I hope to see everybody get some scholarship money.

You broke when you went?

Speaker 2 (09:23):
You gotta see Bruh, it's some it's some good info
in heads.

Speaker 1 (09:28):
I've been flipping through the pages. Bruh.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
I like the numbers that I'm seeing. And I need
a athletic scholarship.

Speaker 3 (09:37):
When it's out there.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
Man, you put it all in here, like from pel
grants to like you said, fast.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
Full even how to fill it out?

Speaker 2 (09:43):
Yeah, correctly, all the way, mm, all the.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
Way, Cause I remember I field mine that one year
and then that was it. I told her truth.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
They sent me a letter back and said, not only
do you need this money, we can't believe that that
you made it this loan without some Yeah.

Speaker 3 (10:03):
And it's so much opportunities out there right, Like you
know a lot of the students they only just go
to financial aid when it's time for they refunds, you know,
when they need to be going throughout the school year.
You know, life is about building relationships, right. Your network
is your network, So you consistently go to financial aid,
you'll find out about more opportunities. You know, money gets
recycled all the time. You lose your scholarship, you know,

(10:23):
that's money back in the pot. You know. But if
you ain't going up there and building those relationships, you'll
never know.

Speaker 1 (10:28):
I'm just flipping through the book, and I already know something.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
They don't know which you know, which purfect.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
They don't even know what purpose stands for.

Speaker 3 (10:36):
Alright, what's purpose stand.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
I'm not gonna tell 'em and they not gonna have
no incentive to read it.

Speaker 3 (10:41):
Okay, Yeah, y'all gotta buy the buck. Y'all gotta buy
the book. Learn the terms smart, borrow wing, uh huh, yeah.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
Federal loans, subsidized or unsup.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
You really put it in, Yeah, the direct loan prover
and look even you even got it broke down to
what you need to do, making it even qualified.

Speaker 1 (11:03):
Fact. How what is this out here doing great things? Man?
If you anybody like it's, I know it saying.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
We got a huge audience of people who may be
around the college age, especially, you know, people going back
to school. Pick this book up and check it out. Man,
it's not one of those books where you gotta go
through every page. It's just you can skip around and
and and you can find exactly what you looking for.
This is definitely like a dictionary of how to get

(11:32):
that money. And I appreciate you stopping through here showing
me much love.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
And don't let this be the last time.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
No, why I'm not.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
Cause I feel like this is not all I I
feel like it's so many other things that you know
about money that I don't I need to know.

Speaker 3 (11:46):
Nah, we gonna team up. We need to do a
eighty five south college tour with college girl.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
Tell me about this? How does this look?

Speaker 3 (11:52):
How does this look? First off, we do it the
college girl way, right. We get a tour bus and
we wrap it. Okay, you know what I'm saying. They
gonna know this is our bus. It it ain't our
bus if you don't see us.

Speaker 1 (12:01):
Kay, oh you know.

Speaker 3 (12:02):
So we go get a group either h h. Get
some high school kids together, you know what I'm saying,
and we going ah on a college tour. We bring
local kids. Maybe we could do it from Atlanta, bring
'em down South, bring 'em back day trips to night trips,
you know, and we really educate these kids about seeing
the world, gaining social skills, cultural skills, you know, how
to become entrepreneurs, be be around surrounded like minded individuals

(12:24):
like themselves, and really see college as a goal. And
the fact of the matter is that in life you're
not too old enough to give time. You know what
I'm saying. You never realized how much that time really
means to these young kids. You know, recently one of
my kids was murdered. I've never thought that that would
happen to me, you know what I'm saying. But in
the reality is it's like we need to do more
as much as our schools are stripped of resources and

(12:46):
things like I was a girl scout blowing up like
how many girl Scout troops?

Speaker 1 (12:49):
You know?

Speaker 3 (12:50):
You know that are what I was in front of Walmart.
You know what I'm saying, troop You kidding me?

Speaker 1 (12:59):
So you made m Yeah, I was learning.

Speaker 3 (13:00):
How to sow, camp, ride horses, all types of stuff that.

Speaker 1 (13:03):
Cookies are a billion dollars.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
You have to really, your heart has to be messed
up to tell a little girl no, thank you, not
your spirit God even don't even like you. Probably if
you tell little girls you don't want to buy the cookies.

Speaker 3 (13:18):
But when's the last time you seen the Girl Scouts?
You know what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (13:21):
It's diffinitely they girl All girl Scouts are.

Speaker 3 (13:23):
Digital now nah, like they're supposed to be troops out
there that's still doing you.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
Know, I'll be honest, I ain't seen the actual real
life Girl Scout in fifteen years probably.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
And that's what.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
But I've seen cookies right twice a year, and they
do now yeah.

Speaker 3 (13:40):
Yeah, online cookies are nuts.

Speaker 1 (13:42):
Do you see what I'm saying?

Speaker 3 (13:43):
Yeah, they do it online. But you know, it's so
important that we bring these resources back. So a eighty
five South college tour.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
Why nobody ever started a Girl Scout women? Like it's
girl Scouts, but like where the women's Scouts?

Speaker 3 (13:56):
Well, I mean you have sororities for you know, different things.
I mean, I'm a Delta, you know what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (14:01):
Oh, you know, gonna bring that up.

Speaker 3 (14:03):
I'm a Delta. Okay, No, we the reds.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
Oh, it's much love to the red Yes, yes, got
a lot of reds.

Speaker 3 (14:09):
Okay, But you know, I think that's one of the
things that we could do, and I think that'll be
dope inspire these brilliant kids.

Speaker 1 (14:15):
Why not inspire these brilliant kids?

Speaker 3 (14:18):
Right, and if they see you doing it, they know
it's possible.

Speaker 1 (14:20):
All we need is one. That's it. I think I
reached my one.

Speaker 3 (14:23):
No, we got we got more to more interact, we
got more to do.

Speaker 1 (14:26):
I might miss around and reach two at ten, right, You.

Speaker 3 (14:29):
A legend in your city like that in my city.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
