How does this journey start? I mean, you know, it's
so it's so interesting.

I started by being an actor in high school, and
I wanted to really want to be an actor, so
I get in all the plays.

When Morgan Park High School.

Speaker 4 (04:37):
So sid come on, y'all, I'm from the projects, Robertaylor
Home forty fifteen South.

You know, they destroyed all the black communities, so for
you to come from his like.

Give me a few stories after Robber Taylor Home about
Robert Tylor.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
First of all, there was an ext the man firstfoll.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
They built projects who they built these projects to contain us, right,
That's what we noticed. All projects are surrounded by freeways
exactly because of the way to concentrate all the black
people in area. Some shit break out, they can roll
tanks down the freeway, so they get tested in like
either the fifties or sixties called the rat test, and
they actually took crates of rats and stacked them up

and just left them alone, and they watched it. Over time,
they said them gave him water, but over time they
killed each other off. So the folks who designed that
system already knew how the projects were going to be
when you put people on top of each other. The
main thing is they kept us away from the so
called them, you know what I'm saying. So the projects
will built like that, and they made the first one

in Atlanta, That's what I heard.

I don't know that.

Speaker 4 (05:45):
I don't know about how God those projects, And what
I do know is they always named them after black
historical figures. So I grew up in Robert tail Robertail
was the first black architect. Brother.

He went to Tuski. He worked on the car.

Under Georgie parking car from Alabama.

Speaker 4 (06:01):
Oh no, he was a cold, cold brother, hell of
an architect. Be well, all these people were really really great.

Superheroes in history.

Speaker 4 (06:09):
But they put the name on it, but the culture
didn't really go with the building. They just put that
on it and then ran it. Still, it ran itself
into the grass. I'm in there sixty shoot and I
moved in sixty sixty three. When we moved into the projects,
Robert telhomes weren't even.

Projects yet, but they were.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
Just high rise apartments.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
Oh there was a regular place.

Speaker 8 (06:29):
It wasn't moving on up.

Speaker 4 (06:33):
No, it wasn't no section that yet, and we were
just moving into the apartments and coming because I was
living before then and what they call a three three
story walk up on the East Asca, and it was
like seven of us living in a one room room.
So it was like I was living in a one
room room and rooming with a rumor. It was so

many of us in that spot.

But we met.

Speaker 4 (06:56):
But you don't know you broke when anybody around you broke.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
As long as you got so we married.

Speaker 4 (07:01):
That we had a family that four brothers, my mama
and dad, and we lived there so only in the
project till sixty eight.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
Then we moved out to Morgan Park.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
We said, now I'm going Oh wow, So I get
to Morgan Park.

Speaker 6 (07:11):
I wanted to act.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
I start getting every play, you know, and then I
start doing comedy and because I was acting, but.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
I was starving to death. You know, you you just start.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
Seventy five percent of actors don't make a living acting.
They got to do some other shit. They waiting tables
or doing something else. Because I don't matter.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
Are you in Chicago now sixty eight? No, I'm not
in Chicago no more. I'm there all the time. I
go back and forth my home. It's always there.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
You need to always be from where you come from.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
Yeah, you know what I'm saying. So I'm always coming back.

Speaker 4 (07:37):
I always go to my community. I always get back
and go to the schools. I talk to people. I'm
trying to help my school get a light and sound
package because that's the first place I ever did a theater.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
Guys in the house.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
Yeah, that's the first time I ever did a theater.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
And now they refurbish.

Speaker 4 (07:52):
You refurbished the seats and the floors, but the sound
system of light is bad. So I'm gonna do a
benefit and raise money to get them lights and sound.
And so, you know, when I got out man out
of school and stuff, I was acting.

Speaker 3 (08:04):
I was making money. So my friends said, why don't
you try comedy?

Speaker 4 (08:07):
And I started that and started those street performance in Chicago,
and people will walk right up to me, white folks
and having money.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
And I mean, you're thinking, you're talking seventy now, seventy
three and seventy four, they were just.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
Having me here.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
I ain't littlebody had my back. I take ship.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
All I do is tell jokes. I liked it, you know.

Speaker 4 (08:24):
And so I became in seventy five, probably one of
the best street performers, and I would do comedy and uh,
I was making a killing. But then winter came and
what motherfucker's trying to hit? No joke street sing street
it's got So I packed up everything to fit my car.
At the time, I had a nineteen sixty seven beautiful Saver.

Speaker 3 (08:42):
I sold a great car, so fucking awesome.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
Card always crossed the loud car period. You ain't ride
CTA we're talking about that he that burned your nose head?
What that did? That's my bad motherfucker right.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
And I was flash it and it got me here,
It got me, It got me a Venice Beach, California.

Speaker 6 (08:59):
Hight end Up got there and showed.

Speaker 4 (09:02):
Them how to do comments, how to make money. When
I got there, all these people was there, but they
weren't making money.

Speaker 3 (09:07):
They gotta got there. He just died.

Speaker 4 (09:08):
To my friend carry her then dead, he called. He
saidt uber uber. He was jumping glass. He had a
pile of glass and he was staying in a chair
jumping the glass barefoot. Then take his shirt off, laying
the glass. One lady was staying on his chest. A
man was standing on his thighs.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
He smoked a.

Speaker 4 (09:24):
Cigarette and he get up. He did have a scratch.
He'd do like six seven shows a day. He made
fouty dollars. I said, niggas, you doing this round, you.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
Were supposed to get paid for real.

Speaker 4 (09:33):
So I showed all the people along along their how
to get their money. So I would do five one
hour shows every Saturday and Sunday for nine years from
eighty six to ninety five, you know, And I was
killing it.

Speaker 3 (09:44):
But I leave with a suitcase full of money.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
So it was really great.

Speaker 4 (09:47):
But that's how I get to get in because everybody
comes to Venice Beach. But then the beach is a
second most popular destination in California, second phony.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
To Disney, So everybody comes to Venice.

Speaker 4 (09:57):
I think might come to La bring Nick people when
they got guess they bring him out to Venice because
out there you could have a.

Speaker 3 (10:03):
Cheap date for twenty dollars. You have a good time
on the beauty. The beauty.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
Don't let them fun around here that fast ship going.
What was Carnival?

Speaker 4 (10:13):
They have not Harry christ One. They bring all Canna functions.
So it was just really cool to do it. But
being out there, everybody comes to the beach, so all
the directors producers would see me performing and invite me
the audition for stuff and the first one was Robert Townsend.

Speaker 1 (10:28):
Who I already knew, and he got me.

Speaker 4 (10:30):
I did Hollywood Shuffle with him, which was the first movie,
but I still on Venice. But it was Bernie mac Man,
Bernie Matt let me tell you something, aout burning mac
Berni Mack was a black man. See black men are
rare niggas, niggas every.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
Way you and four niggas fought out.

Speaker 3 (10:48):
But black men, men with integrity for their community, for
their family.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
For their queen, for their God.

Speaker 4 (10:55):
Rare indeed burning Matt like, he didn't go out with
us man when he when we got through working, he
went back to the room. Man got him some soul food,
man got him from red beans rice and laid up
on the phone with his wife.

He was a black man doing his ship. And he

was coming, and he made them put me on the show.

that Mike went to death jail?

I had that first year of it?

When that first started, I mean I'm talking, it was real.

I just got the okay, so I just got to
the beach, that was eighty six, So we did probably
eighty seven or eighty eight, because I ended up doing
six seasons of.

That and the whole thing one.

But Bernie was always just a guyn brother. He wouldn't
step on nobody, which I can't say for a lot
of motherfuckers. He wouldn't step on you to get something
that was more and more airtime. He ain't doing that
ship man. You know, he was a real comedian that
he was a real man. And so I just always
salute that brother and his family. That would love to
interview his wife and Rob.

I would just love to have both the talking about them.

passed there, but I thought he might have been. Yeah,
my daddy knew him.

The place started? When COMEDYXT theater started. We all started
the same day together. Yeah, Me, Robin Harris, uh, both
of the Damian Wayns, Keenan Wayans, Rusty Kinda, and Anne
Marie John So you did you see the movie I'm

Sucking one around with one leg lay work.

So by the second week we walked to the Comedy
Act theater and they stand.

But the thing is well, me and him both were
like cop dogs.

He was an urban cat around there.

Speaker 3 (13:31):
Everybody knew him.

But I was killing motherfucker's on Finn's Beach after us
from their head open, right, So both of us would
show up and went both battling to see who would
be the MC because they hadn't set litified who's gonna
be the regular MC yet And and then me and
him were getting for arguments over.

But it was somebody else ship.

That we were both stealing, you know, so I would
be doing a red Fox joke like and yeah.

Being in equity, you know, and by doing on Venice Beach,
God showed me that I don't have to work for
other people. So when I was there battling with Robin
about whose night is that, Who's gonna be the the MC,
I walked away from it because me and him actually gotten.

With the battle, I would and got gloves and ship.

Speaker 4 (17:25):
I said, come on, let's go to the back because
we was about to tussle and shit and Michael Williams
were putting together.

Speaker 1 (17:30):
Broke that up. So we never was like really friends.

I mean, we was cordial to each other, and then
after he became a star, we would see each other
and speak and stuff.

Speaker 1 (17:39):
I hate it that we never.

Made had a friendship, you know what I'm saying.

But you can't deny who he is and who he
was just truly a great comedian, had a lot of
characterized dole, you know. And he wasn't a shitty person.
He wasn't a backstab and try to fuck people over.
So he was just a straightforward dude who wanted to
do his work and be part.

He was been the biggest fucking comic in the world. Died.

I heard he was going to be doing stold me
something about him about the Death Jam or something like
that by Robert Harris.

Deafth Gym was built for Robin Harris. You do that right,
That's why I was created.

They created that show for him, and then he died,
right before it started, So they gave it to his partner,
Martin Lawrence, the closest cat to him.

He inherited that role Martin.

So Martin should be sending that boys man, little chicks

And a lot of times people don't understand a lot
of times it's not about the talent. It's about the access.

People can't get in because they don't know the right people.
Everything's about communications and relationships. If you know the right people,
the way you talk to they yeah, if they know
you and that they care about you. That's the relationship
part of it. Because people like to work with people
who they like. They like to work with friends, They
like to work with relatives, people they can trust, you know,
so that if they if the relationship is cool, you

can go everywhere. If relationship is bad, you ain't getting nowhere.
You can see talented motherfuckers who should be a lot
further like me.
