Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio. This is our two on this Wednesday, Dan
and the Dane's Dan Patrick's Show. The NFL schedule is out.
We went through Week one including the Cowboys against the
Buccaneers to open things up on Thursday night in September.
Horse racing is putting the expression all news is good
(00:21):
news to the test this week. The sport's been in
the news a lot since Kentucky Derby winner Medina's Spirit
failed a drug test, but there's a lot of negative attention.
Yesterday trainer Bob Baffort had to walk things back on
that topical ointment that he used on Medina's Spirit. Still,
Maryland Racing officials are going to let the horse compete
in the Preakness this weekend. In fact, his presence will
(00:44):
probably be the key to the race getting respectable ratings.
But big picture here the questions about Bob Baffort, the trainer.
Are they going to come down hard on him? Make
a point here? Are they going to dque the horse
and take away the Kentucky Derby? And it's unfortunate at
twelve to one, Medina Spirit was a great underdog story
and Baffort was starting to get recognized even more as
(01:05):
one of the transcendent figures in racing, and now we
have chaos. But it's interesting. Probably not how horse racing
authorities would like the sport to be elevated to mainstream,
But any publicity is good publicity, right, let's bring in
Pat forty covers the sport had a lot of things
to say about Bob Baffort. After the Kentucky Derby, Pat
(01:28):
had a tweet saying Maryland Official site integrity of due
process and allowing Medina Spirit to run, while also asking
for additional testing of the derby winner. Testing yesterday and
today should yield results by Friday, officials, said Pat. I
said this after the Derby. I said it to Bob Baffert,
why don't they test the horses prior to the Derby?
(01:50):
Then you don't have this embarrassment. And he said, well,
it's hard to do that. If you do it Friday
and then the race is Saturday, can you get the
test results? Well, the Preakness is this now and Medina's
Spirit is going to be racing here. So what do
you make of the Preakness? Medina Spirit and Bob Bafford. Yeah,
I guess I'm not surprised that Medinas Spirit has been
(02:12):
given the tentative go ahead to race. We'll see what
the drug test comes back with on Friday, if there's
still traces of Betha Metazon in his system or not.
But I just think that without the second confirming sample
back from Churchill Downs that they were facing, you know
a lot of angry lawyering if they tried to keep
(02:33):
the horse out of the Preakness here and quite frankly,
you know, as you allude it to, you don't want
to run a Preakness without the Derby winner if it's controversial.
Well maybe also much the better for a race that
really is lacking any luster day. And I mean this
is a weak field other than Medina Spirit and Bafford's
other horse concert tour. So if you're Pimlico Race coorse
(02:53):
of Maryland Jockey Club, you're sitting there saying, yeah, we
want that horse, and yeah yeah. The head vetan arian
at Pimlico said the following this morning. If there is
or was any of this drug or any other medications,
whether therapeutic or illegal, in the horse, we will know
about that before the race. This is supposed to be
(03:14):
therapeutic this cream that was put on this horse, So
why is it considered cheating if it's not something that
really you know, it's not a performance enhancing drug. Yeah, well,
I mean it as an anti inflammatory. I would think
it falls into the category of something that relieves discomfort
for horses. And thus is it relieving a discomfort that
(03:38):
would otherwise keep them from running as well or running
at all? If without that it's not the first Fafford
horse to test positive for this, Demeans brilliantly Fast Philly
tested for this last year in the Kentucky Oaks. So
what was the purpose of using it? Then? You know,
is there is it being used simply as a topical
for a skim irritation or is it being used to
(04:01):
alleviate pain or discomfort in some other area. That's I
think the question I wondered if Bob Badford didn't go
all scorched earth a couple of days ago, that we
might be a little bit more lenient because he had
cancel culture, he had sabotage, I mean denials, never used it.
We don't use this. And then I said to Bob, Bob,
(04:22):
did you do inventory here? Did you ask people who
work with you. He said, we're in the process. Don't
you start with the veterinarian. I mean, I don't understand this, Pat,
I don't. No, I'm with you that exactly. I mean,
if they found out about this on Saturday, I mean,
the first call goes to the vet, doesn't it. If
(04:43):
if you are a you know, one hundred percent in
the clear, the first call is there any chance to
why this horse would have this in it system? And
you go from there to everybody else in your barn.
You know, why would the horse test positive for this?
And yeah, I think Bob's reaction definitely was off putting
to some people. And just the cumulative effect of this
has been, you know, five very high profile positive tests
(05:05):
for Bob Baffer horses. You know, he's great for the
sport in terms of his success and his visibility and
his approachability. He's glib, you know, he's recognizable and as
for where nobody's recognizable. But at the same time, he's
lost a lot of credibility in the last year plus
really over these drug tests. And I think this was
(05:26):
like one bridge too many for a lot of people.
Did horse racing have a good week? No, I don't
think so now. I mean you could argue, you know,
as your lead in said, any publisty is good publisting
about that. They're testing the bounds of that, for sure.
I don't think so. Anytime the Kentucky Derby winner is disqualified,
that's a bad week. Now. It has certainly sustained the
(05:47):
storyline of Medina Spirit and and the Kentucky Derby for
several days, and it's brought interest into the Preakness that
maybe wouldn't be there. But I don't think. I think
what we're gonna have. We're gonna have people at Pimlico
booing the Medina Spirit and you know, well that may
not hurt the horses feelings. It's not necessarily good for
the sport. The horse hasn't apologized technically, yes he has.
(06:14):
Thanks for joining us, Pat. We appreciate your time as always,
my pleasure, Dan, that's bad Forting Sports Illustrated Senior writer. Yeah.
I think horse racing will benefit from this. The casual
fan probably doesn't care about it. You like the event,
somebody's gonna have a party. You go over, and then
everybody has some cocktails, whatever the cocktail is of that race,
(06:36):
and then you have that, and you know, maybe you
have the horse racing, uh, you know, prior races in
the background, and all of a sudden you gather around
TV and then you watch for two and a half
minutes and then it's done. Does anybody care if it's
like real or sanctioned or I don't know if people do.
(06:58):
It's almost like we move. We've passed steroids in baseball,
certainly in football toward to France. Yeah, somebody's doing something
football sure hh, steroids, somebody doing something. It's like we
just kind of said, all right, whatever, I'm just gonna
watch for the entertainment here, you know, not the moral
(07:21):
compass here of the sport. And I'm worried about the
integrity like I used to. You know, you know I
was flying that flag, you know, Oh, you got to
protect the sport. I wanted to protect Hank Aaron, believe
it or not. That was my crusade. I gotta protect
Hank Aaron from what. I'm not sure other than Barry Bonds.
And Barry Bonds is you know, friends with Hank Aaron.
(07:45):
But I'm going to protect him from I'm gonna protect
the integrity this sport. When you tell people. Oh yeah,
you know, HH is a big issue in the NFL.
People don't care. Do you care unless it's a quarterback
who tested positive. Like if it came out that Tom
Brady used performance enhancing drugs or Russell Wilson or throw
(08:06):
out Patrick Mahomes. There you go. If Patrick Mahomes tested positive,
probably a big deal, but not as big as Derek
Jeter testing positive. Because we viewed steroids differently in baseball
than we do in football, because you know, having been
on the sidelines and listening to the collisions, I'm like, hell, yes,
(08:28):
I'd be using steroids if I played baseball. Oh my god,
the integrity of the sport, like we kind of pick
and choose when it really bothers us. Yeah, boy, I'd
be more upset if Brady had used looks enhancing drugs
because he used to become a normal looking guy. Well
and then as he gets older gets way more handsome.
Growth hormones can help you roadtox, don't. He should start
(08:51):
a new line TB twelve brot roadtox. Well, I hate needles,
so I could never do botox. That's the convenience. Yeah,
I know, he didn't say I never, Okay, all right,
well done. Yeah, you know what, maybe I was sabotage
one time when I was in my sleep and somebody
gave me an injection. But Bro talks, Brady does seem
(09:15):
he doesn't even look like the same human that he
did in two Does he's Benjamin Button? He does look younger.
He does. Brad Pitt, who was Benjamin Button, looks older.
Tom Brady looks younger. Did you see where the Buccaneers
were addressing the uh Tom can play till he's fifty?
Do you have that cut from the GM Jason Light,
(09:37):
the GM of the Buccaneers When you talk to him
about extending, was there a sense that this is the
last contract extension You're gonna have a conversation with him?
Did he give you any indication at all how long
he wants to play? All you know, I want to
keep all those conversations most from private, but not no
inkling at all to him. He wants to play till
he's fifty, and he's still playing, and he feels like
(09:58):
he can still play. He can play till his fift
All right, that was on the Rich eisenshow By the way,
Rich has had a great run of guests coaches GMS
following the NFL Draft. By the way, the schedule has
been released, not the entire schedule, but week one of
the NFL schedule, and CBS, Fox, NBC, ESPN have all
announced it. Now you do, I've chose tonight where you
(10:21):
have the schedule release. Parties kill. You said that right
to Fritzie's face, by the way, but eisenshow having an
incredible run of him. Oh, I didn't face. No, I
didn't mean it that way, all right, for the face
of the NFL and you can't get decent football guests
that would be very very wow. See, don't take it personally.
(10:41):
I've just given Rich Eisen some credits. His show follows
our show on Pete Cock random complimented because he had
Jason Light and that's the GM who had that comment
made some news. That's what it's all about. I think
the bottom line mater he had Matt Rule on, you know,
the Panthers head coach. I think he had one other
(11:03):
really great guest. Maybe you guys can check and see
who else Rich had on. I think he had one
other newsmaker there following the NFL Draft. But you have
the schedule release coming up and the big game is
the Cowboys and the Buccaneers season opener September ninth, Bears Rams,
which is surprising the first Sunday night because if you're saying,
(11:24):
I'm tuning in to watch Andy Dalton against Matthew Stafford
Justin Fields versus Aaron Donald, Okay, then it's Ravens Raiders
opening Monday Night, September thirteenth, the anest me club, you know,
and you guys say, especially Paul, that he's always want
to see these rookies. The week one game of a
(11:45):
rookie is never good like last year Joe Burrow, like
last sixteen thirteen or something to the Chargers, those are
not like usually it doesn't start with a bang rookie quarterbacks.
But it's new, but it's sloppy. Yeah, but everything about
the NFL, they give you hope with the draft and
then that first week, like I just wanted to see
(12:06):
how Burrow looked. I didn't think the Bengals were going
to be good, but I wanted to see how confident
he was. I wanted to see how he ran a team.
Was he a one year of wonder at L Shoe?
And we found out Joe Burrow was really good last
year for a really bad team. Yeah, Polly. As a hypothetical,
I think it's about five years ago. It was Mariota
(12:27):
versus Jamis was the opening game, you know, Carson Wentz's
first game as a rookie was I think like versus
Manzil or something. I can't remember what it was, or
maybe he was someone else. But if you told me
it was justin Fields of the Bears and Trey Lance
of the Niners was one of the first games of
the year. I would take that over any other game.
Would you take that over Buccaneers Cowboys? Absolutely, because I've
(12:47):
seen Buccaneers Cowboys. I know exactly what's going to happen.
I mean it's gonna be a good game. Or from
a curiosity standpoint, I've seen all Brady's work in Dak
Prescott's work, I would love to see Trey Lance's rookie
debut versus justin Fields. Just as a hypothetical, But what
if I said it's Mac Jones versus Zach Wilson Patriots Jets,
(13:08):
I probably still go with it because over the Cowboys
in the Buccaneers, Yeah, because I'm gonna see that in
December and January and February, I might not see the Cowboys. Well,
I'm gonna see like relevant football by them to see Rock.
I love rookie debuts at quarterback. Yeah, well, Zach Wilson
is going to make his debut against the Panthers and
(13:29):
Sam Arnold. Yes, m that'd be a sweet win for
Sam Darnold if he came away with that. No, he
should beat the Jets at home. There's a lot of
nice buzz about him. People seem to have decent expectations.
I don't know if that's good or bad for him. Yeah,
but I think he's in a tricky spot because if
let's say he plays well this year in Carolina, now
(13:50):
what kind of salary is he going to command? And
do you want to tip? That's why I thought, if
I'm Carolina and I had a great grade on Justin Fields,
I would have taken Justin Field. I would have had
Sam for one year, and then I would have put
Justin Fields in there. That's how you win in the NFL.
I don't think you're winning if you're paying your quarterback
forty million dollars. Just not. Now, you know, the Chiefs
(14:16):
could have won the Super Bowl and then that that
would you know, we'd find fault with what I'm saying obviously,
but I just I don't think you can do that
and still have a great team around that quarterback for
that amount of money. Yeah, mcl isn't the problem that
you said before. There's like the salaries the quarterbacks. There's
no middle roads. There's no there's no like separate salary
(14:39):
cabins that scrooge you up. But it feels like next
guy up and then he's gonna make whatever money and
I'll go, but he's not worth that, Like why am
I paying that guy more than this guy? Like it
just the system seems flawed. There should be middle ground,
gray area where you go, Sam Darnold's not great, he's
not bad. He should be making this salary here that
(15:02):
makes more sense instead of going, you gotta pay Sam
Arnold forty million dollars. No you don't. You're gonna franchise him.
He's gonna make what thirty five million dollars. In this
NFL culture, you're either all in or all out with
your quarterback. And that that's where I would move on.
(15:28):
Baker Mayfield will probably stay with Cleveland, the Rams, said
Jared Goff we're moving on. The Eagles moved on from
Carson Wentz. This is what the I think Seattle is
gonna move on from Russell Wilson. Lamar Jackson is going
to get paid. Jamis Winston didn't, Mariota didn't, Mitchell Trubisky didn't.
(15:53):
They're just it's rare when you go, okay, we're gonna
keep you. And I still want to see one more
year with Baker Mayfield, that is, unless they trade for
Aaron Rodgers. Now when I when I saw that rumor,
I said, stop again, that's that's just clickbait. We've got
Aaron Rodgers, Baker Mayfield, Cleveland Browns. Here we go. Let's
(16:16):
go play. Look at our new toy we can play with.
It's like the Cowboys with Kyle Pitts, and they weren't
getting Kyle Pitts just because Jerry loves them. Yeah. Yeah,
I'm It's been talked about it a lot lately. A
you're sure about Lamar Jackson just because of durability in
the volume mccarries, there are people say, you know, be
careful about a long long term to yes, just for health? Yeah, yes,
(16:41):
And can he graduate to being a great passer? Or
is he just going to be this multidimensional talent there
and he has, you know, obviously been an MVP, But
now what is next? Now they're got him some receivers.
Now I want to see I want to see Lamar
Jackson hold his own with Patrick Mahomes. I want him
(17:02):
to elevate his game when they're big games. That's what
I think is the next step for him. We'll talk
to Mike Florio coming up next. We'll talk about the
schedule release and some of the more interesting matchups. By
the way, if you're wondering, the opening weekend Packers at
the Saints, but also another four to twenty five Eastern
(17:24):
game on Fox. So Fox has two four twenty five
games on Sunday, Packers Saints. The other one is Bronchos
and Giants, and the Broncos are the team that has mentioned,
probably more often than any other team is a possible
destination for Aaron Rodgers if he doesn't stay in Green Bay.
I don't know what the NFL knows. I don't know
(17:45):
what the NFL can they call Green Bay? Does the
commissioner call and just say, look, planning the schedule here,
help us out. We want to have the best games,
best players, and you know, any chance here you can
give me an update here? You know, how about this?
(18:06):
You don't have to tell me anything. If he's staying
hang up the phone. That'd be like Watergate here. That
way you can you can deny, you know, plausible deniability here. Hey,
I didn't say anything to him. I'm gonna ask Florio
about that. How involved would the commissioner be? Is the
(18:28):
commissioner and finding out who's going to be playing and
when they're going to be playing. I'm thinking it's the
CEO the commissioner in this is a business. It's a
business like I would think that you would want to
ask those questions. Yeah, Bob Bafford, just calls that check
way down the road, wait till November and check what
this new start and then make the schedule. Twenty after
the hour, we'll get to phone calls coming up. Got
(18:48):
our poll question, if I gave you the Nets and
the Lakers or everybody else to win the NBA title,
who you got? Former NBA player Channing Fry Turner's Sports
NBA will join us coming up a little bit later on.
We'll talk about playoffs scenarios and are the Lakers and
the Golden State Warriors on a collision course that'll be
coming up a little bit later on twenty one after
(19:09):
the hour Dan Patrick Show. What if I saved you
three hundred dollars a month, you'd act on that. Right?
What if I said you could save up to one
thousand dollars a month, you'd act on that as well. Right.
Get a free mortgage review from American Financing just a

to The Dan Patrick Show podcast. Be sure to catch
us live every weekday morning nine until noon eastern six
to nine Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, and you can
find us on the iHeartRadio app at FSR, or stream
us live on the Peacock app. I was in the
back room talking to the back room guys. Nobody else does,
but I went back to say hello, and then I
(20:34):
walk out coming back over to the other side of
the man cave. Seaton goes, do you hear about Gwyneth Paltrow?
And I go, wait what? And then Paully goes, save it.
I go, you can't do that. You know. I love Hollywood.
Are we gonna have a Hollywood minute? Here? Seton. I
gotta get to Florio. But you're teasing me here with
(20:55):
Gwyneth Paltrow. She made a pretty powerful admission about some
of the sort of the lows that she hit during
uh quarantine. Oh okay, are you ready? No, no, no, no,
I gotta get to Floria. I mean, he's really busy.
It's it's a stunning unless Mike Floria wants to hear
about Gwyneth Paltrow. Mike, I'm gonna leave this up to you.
(21:15):
We can talk football, or we can work in Gwyneth
Paltrow and I will not be able to function properly
over the course of this interview if I don't know, okay,
what happened and I went and I believe you're being
sincere Mike. Yes, well, it's news broke. I think maybe
a day or two ago. Um, but it's it's just
taken me now to emotionally be prepared to bring this
(21:37):
to you guys. But apparently during quarantine, Gwyneth Paltrow broke
down and date bread. Oh my god, actual bread, yeah,
carbs and all back to you. Did she announce this
like a like a revelation, that's how low things got?
She actually ate bread, the crust and everything. Yes, oh
my god, Mike, Gwynneth she was really Although when you
(22:01):
said she ate bread, I thought you said she ate Brad. No,
I'm going now, let's bring in Mike Florio Pro Football
Talk Live co host. Let me start with Tim Tebow.
I'm curious. You know you had Chris collins Worth podcast
with Urban Meyer, and Chris asked him and Urban basically
(22:24):
saying I haven't made a decision yet. When does he
have to make a decision on Tim Tebow joining the
ninety man roster. Let me just first say that during quarantine,
on a nightly basis, I took a large piece of bread,
soaked it in bourbon, lit it on fire, and swallowed
it holes. So take that point when you look at
(22:46):
the clip of what urban Meyer said to Chris Collinsworth.
I mean, at one point he says, hey, let's give
it a shot. Well, but we haven't decided to do
it yet. I don't, I don't. I don't get it, Dan,
I don't know if this is a trial balloon, if
they're they're by what happened with the Iowa strength coach
that they had on the payroll for like a day
before urban Meyer realized. This isn't like college football, where
(23:08):
you just do whatever you want to do. This is
a gimmick. This is a side show. Urban Meyers trying
to sell it as something other than that. It is
an effort to sell jerseys, it's an effort to sell tickets.
They can sign him whenever they want to sign him,
and I think part of it is, frankly, they got
to figure out what they're gonna do with Gardner Minshew
because he's wearing Tebow's number, And so that's a reason
(23:30):
to wait, because you want to sell the fifteen jerseys
right out of the gates. You don't want to have
a back order of fifteen jerseys, and you don't want
to have something awkward where he wears number sixteen then
number fifteen. But I feel like it's going to happen.
It's just a matter of when. And I guess the
one small sliver is the possibility that urban Meyer gets
enough pushback internally that he realizes this isn't college football.
(23:51):
I'm not going to be able to make this fly
in the locker room because there's gonna guys giving him
the side eye in the locker room saying, are you serious?
A guy hasn't been in the NFL since two thousand
twelve in a regular season game, never played tight endy
at one snap at tight end. It did not go well.
And he's going to get one of these jobs that
there are hundreds of guys out there trying to get
these jobs. Get out of here with that. I feel
(24:12):
like he's going to have to deal with that internally.
But it's the ninety man roster that's that's different from me.
If it got down to the fifty three man roster.
Wait will I think. I think if he gets on
the ninety man roster, he's gonna make the fifty three
man roster. Well, why is he on the ninety man rosters?
What's the point of giving one of ninety roster spots
(24:33):
and one of the most competitive sports in the world,
when there are guys every year coming out of the
college level who are good enough to play at the
NFL level and they're dying for a spot on the
ninety man roster. You're taking that ninetieth spot and you're
giving it to a guy who you should just hire
to be an assistant coach, make up a title for
him if you want him in the building, if you
want to give your friend a job, do that. Don't
(24:55):
give him one of the ninety spots where the guys
are competing to be one of the fifty three. I
think what's going to happen is he'll end up on
the practice squad and they will elevate him on a
regular basis to one of those two extra spots where
you can take practice squad guys and make it a
fifty five man roster and potentially potentially end up you
know dressing getting a gimmick play thrown his way, catching
(25:18):
a touchdown pass. Fans are happy, jerseys are sold. I
just think that you're not doing this dance with Tim
Tebow now unless you have plans for September. And I
think Urban Meyer has plans for September, or he wouldn't
be wasting this time on it. Now, why does Tim
Tebow bring about anger? Well, look, yesterday, people immediately started
(25:41):
to make the connection with Colin Kaepernick because Kaepernick's been
out four years, and right now, the strongest argument for
not giving Kaepernick a chance is he hasn't played him
four years. Where here's a guy whosn't played in eight
years and he's going to change to a position that
he refused to play back when the quarterback things started
to fizzle out for him. But it occurred to me
this is very simple. No one was going to give
(26:01):
her Tim Tebow a chance. Urban Meyers the one coach
who was going to sign Tim Tebow, just like Jim
Harbaugh is the one coach who would sign Colin Kaepernick
because he's been praising Kaepernick the last four years. If
Harbor ended up being the coach in Jacksonville, maybe Kaepernick
getting an opportunity, but Tebo gets an opportunity because it's
the one coach who would give him one. And I
just think it's this idea, Dan that it started with
(26:23):
the baseball thing. For me, I had no problem with
him playing in the NFL. Was a first round draft pick.
Josh McDaniels rolled the dice and it kind of worked,
and you know, he got to the playoffs. I mean,
horribly inaccurate, figured away to win close games from time
to time. Magic will run in twenty eleven. But you know,
there's a certain point where you just gotta you just gotta,
you gotta move on and and if you don't move on,
(26:44):
you're And I got no problem with it. I'm a capitalist.
The Mets thing was about making money, and I feel
like this thing's about making money. So don't don't tell
me it's about football when it's about making money, because
I think it's about Jacksonville Jerseys, tickets, excitement, and not
about football. If I said Urban Meyer is either going
to be really good or really bad, no middle ground,
(27:08):
what would you take really bad? Just because history tells
us other than Jimmy Johnson, You know, it seems like
every few years, there's a college coach who comes to
the NFL and he's gonna revolutionize the game, and the
media lines up to apply lips to his buttocks in
the event that he is Jimmy Johnson. Right, Oh, whoa, whoa,
this is gonna be great. Oh, great, Joanna, Oh, he's
gonna be great. Chip Kelly, Oh, he's gonna be great.
(27:28):
He's gonna revolutionize the game. Nope, who's the other one? Yes,
Furrier saving. I mean, they're all one after another. Here's
a guy, and I believe it when I see it.
If you're gonna be Jimmy Johnson, you gotta prove to
me you're Jimmy Johnson. And until then, there's only one
Jimmy Johnson. That's how I look at it. And I
feel like there's so many in our business that are
(27:50):
falling all over themselves to assume that this is the
next Vince Lombardi. It makes me inclined to go the
other way too. And we'll see, we'll see. It's it's
it's a hell of a laboratory experiment, and from the
Jaguars perspective, every other thing they've tried for the past
twenty years hasn't worked, so they may as well try this.
He's Mike Florial Pro Football Talk Live co host with
(28:10):
Chris Simms. I'm wondering if the commissioner can call the
Packers before they before they do the schedule release. If
you're running a league you like, you have the Packers
opening weekend, that twenty five slot, that that's Fox's big game,
(28:30):
and the other game is Denver against the Giants, the
team mentioned as the landing spot for Aaron Rodgers if
he doesn't stay in Green Bay. Do you think the
commissioner calls teams, not just the Packers, to inquire about
certain things like a situation like that, to help when
they release the schedule. Look, I don't know if the
(28:51):
commissioner sits down with a notepad and a to do list,
and I'm going to call Mark Murphy today and talk
about Aaron Rodgers. But I suspect they have ways of
getting information. Whether it's three levels down, but they get
the best information they can. What's going on here? What
do you think is going to happen? They need that information.
(29:11):
Packers chief's biggest game of the year potentially other than
Buccaneers Patriots. You gotta put that game late enough in
the season they can be flexed out of four twenty
five or flexed out of Sunday Night Football if that's
where it would end up. I mean, you don't want
it to be locked into Monday night football. You don't
want it to be in a hard spot where you
can't move it because you may or may not have
Aaron Rodgers. So I think there are ways to protect
yourself against it. But yeah, how do you not have
(29:35):
those conversations when you have access to the individuals involved
and these are legitimate business considerations. Where are we going
to put these marquee games? Let's take away the Buccaneers
and the Cowboys. Give me the must C matchup in
Week one. Wow, Steelers Bills. I'm surprised that's a one
o'clock game. I really am. A couple of playoff teams
(29:55):
from last year with a lot of continuity. I mean
with the Saints Packers, you know, you get one new
quarterback in New Orleans, whether it's Taysom hell or Jamis Winston.
It's not like Drew Brees' back. You got Ben Roethlisberger
in what likely will be his final year, going to
Buffalo to take on Josh Allen, the Steelers going all
in the Bills, trying to rectify how their season ended.
(30:16):
I think that's the best game of Week one, and
you could argue it's even better than Cowboys Bucks. Yeah,
but I think this might be because it's Buffalo and
they're at one o'clock that maybe Steelers. Of course they're
a national draw. I don't know if the Buffalo Bills
are a national draw. If this game was in Pittsburgh,
then maybe it's a four twenty five game. But I
don't know. It just feels like maybe Buffalo is still
(30:37):
not graduated to that mussy TV. What excites you more?
Steelers Bills are Ravens. Raiders. Steelers and the Bills. Yeah,
but now the Raiders new stadium. I think there's a
sensitivity to letting these stadiums. It's absolutely all year. This
is the first time there's actually gonna be human beings
other than the players and the coaches and the officials
in Allegiant Stadium. So it's got to have a prime spot.
(31:00):
Kind of quiet on the Deshaun Watson front here, very quiet.
What's that? What's that mean? It means that they're working
on a settlement of the twenty two cases. It's the
only it's the only reasonable conclusion at this point. And look,
it was nearly three weeks ago where the lawyers were
in court accusing the other parties each side of destroying evidence,
and there were social media posts dan and there were
(31:22):
press conferences, and it was ugly and it was nasty.
The plug doesn't mutually get pulled on those tactics in
the court of public opinion unless there's something happening behind
the scenes, and if they can get these cases settled
to the satisfaction of everyone involved, I think Deshaun Watson
gets traded. And I wrote last night that I think
the two main destinations for him would be the Dolphins
(31:42):
or the Eagles. And I think the Eagles are a
team that should never be discounted in this because they
are desperate to get a franchise quarterback, and yes, they
want to go all in with Jalen Hurts this year.
But if Deshaun Watson, who's already proven himself, would fall
into their laps, I think they would do it. I
keep thinking the Washington foot I think that well, but
the only problem is we know what's happened off the
(32:05):
field with the Washington football team with cheerleaders with the owner,
and I think that's a Molotov cocktail if you bring
Deshaun Watson into a situation like that, even if you're
making a great point dent and he's going to get suspended,
even if he gets all these cases resolved today, you
can't not suspend him with twenty two of these claims
alleging sexual misconduct during massages. When Ben Roethlisberger served four
(32:28):
games in twenty ten with two allegations of sexual misconducts,
so you can't look the other way. If you're the NFL,
it's got to be a four or six game suspension.
Some people have talked to around the teams, not the
league office, but the teams are thinking that's what it
would be. I don't think there's gonna be any hesitation
to trade for him once these cases are resolved, because
if the cases aren't resolved, then what you're trading for
(32:50):
is a guy who's going to be on the commissioner
example list until the cases are resolved. Yeah, you know
there's going to be a suspension. You assume there's going
to be one. You trade for him, he serves a suspension,
and then he comes back by Halloween, and you've got
him for the rest of this year and more importantly,
for the rest of his career, if you can keep
him happy and if you can work it out. From
a cap standpoint, here we are in the middle of May.
(33:11):
If you were betting on Aaron Rodgers, where he'll be
in September. I think he's gonna find a way to
come back and act like, what's everybody looking at I mean,
is there a booker I'm unaware of. Why is everyone
staring at me? Why is everyone ask me all these questions?
What's a big deal? I think he's gonna do that. Dan,
We've seen him do that before. You know, he'll like
the fuse. He'll run away and after the explosion he
(33:34):
comes back and he chastises everyone for noticing the explosion.
I think that's what he's gonna do, and he's gonna
blame us, me, you, everyone who's made a big deal
about it, which is looking for clicks, We're looking for views,
We're looking to make money off of his name. When
he knew damn well that he could have ended all
of this with Tariko at the Kentucky Derby two days
into it, he had a chance to go on camera
(33:54):
and say this is all overblown, this is all fake,
this is nothing. I'll be there. I think he's going
to find a way to come back because he's got
no other options, because I don't think the packers at
this point are going to trade him. But does he
enjoy this? I don't know. I don't know. You know,
it's yeah. I see too, though, Mike. The dynamic I
see from players from time to time goes like this, Hey, everybody,
(34:17):
look at me. What the hell are you looking? Right? Well,
he can always retire and do Jeopardy. Thirty million dollars
to retire Dan No, I know when people seek all
of it back, yes, but when people say, oh, he'll
retire and do Jeopardy, there's no given that he'll get
(34:39):
to do Jeopardy and they're not going to pay him
thirty million dollars. Peter King made a great point a
couple of weeks ago. On one hand, Aaron Rodgers has
no hesitation at all to tell the world I want
to be the host of Jeopardy. No nuance, no ambiguity,
no beautiful mystery, nothing. I want this job. It comes
(35:00):
to his football career, he won't tell us a damn thing.
He's speaking in riddles and enigmas and clues and whispers
and tell, just tell us what you want, Aaron. What's
so hard about telling people what you want when you've
already proven that you have the capacity to well. I
said that to Chefty, like, come on, like Aaron owes
it to people, and then Cheft He's like, no, he doesn't.
(35:20):
I go, yes, he does. Cheft's getting himself in line
for the scoop of what happens next with Aaron. Dan,
come on, come on, Dan, Chef Cheft, he's taken every
bullet he can for Aaron. That whole thing about that
he's the one who bull crap. Rogers wanted that out there.
Chefty took the bullet so that when the next move comes,
(35:42):
Cheft he's the one who gets it. Rogers wanted that
out there the day that it hit. Not that wasn't
Chefty's sitting back working a chess board. That was Rogers
working the chess board that may have included Chefty is
one of the ponds. You should have Chefty on your show. Okay,
he welcome anytime we tell it like it is. Baby,
I'm too old to give a crap anymore, Dan, life's
(36:05):
too short to tiptoe and kiss ass and pretend to
play the game. Do you think you could take Adam Schefter? Oh?
I could take him. Oh I could take him. It's
a pretty good I will only pick a fight with
people that I know that I could beat up, really so,
which is why I'd never pick a fight with you. Absolutely, absolutely, Yes,
(36:25):
Paul hight Thing, it's height and reach. Yes, yes, Dan,
it's already breaking this one down now. Floria is a
good shape. He's got good size arms. They're sneaky, covers
them up a lot. Schefter is a thick guy. I
don't know how athletic er is there, if he could fight,
but he's he was a Northwestern guy, not the toughest school.
We'll just do the tail of the tape. I'll show
up anytime, any place for the measurements for the tail
of the tape. That's all I'm saying. That's all I'm saying.
(36:49):
Thank you, budd, thank you man. That's Mike Florio, Pro
Football Talk Live co host. I'd watched that Florio v. Schefter.
He doesn't say anything about Jake Laid. He's not touch
at No, no, no, no, Seaton learned that the hard way. Yes,
he did you wrestled? I threw that fight, did you? Yeah? Yeah,
(37:11):
I heard that Jake Paul wants to fight you next
after is it Logan Paul who's fighting Floyd Mayweather? And
shouldn't Floyd fight both of these brothers either? And it's
sad that boxing has gotten to the point where it's gimmicky.
Where we go? Um, how do we how do we
uh you know, raise some awareness, get some publicity. How
(37:32):
about you know some YouTube or TikTok guy is gonna
fight sort of Floyd Mayweth? Yeah, how about put both
of them in the ring against Floyd. Yeah. See, we
were just sort of like sparring me and Jake Lazer
and he was just like yeah, you know, like looks
it supposed to be something like this, and he play
kicked me in the thigh and one it was some
(37:54):
of the most extreme pain. He'd play kicked me like
just messing. It was like the most extreme pain I read.
I had a massive bruise, I mean, and he immediately
swept them let my legs out from under me, and
he was just like warming up like yeah, you know,
like just something like this wabang went right down. Oh yeah,
that's good. Okay. He grabbed me and fourteen years ago
in New York from behind with my neck, and my
(38:15):
neck has not been the same. Like he was twisting
it to get me in some kind of armbarred some nonsense,
and I was like, dude, stop a chokehole, get out
of here, Go get my bb gun, gonna take a break.
