will join us on loan from the NFL Network. Mina Kimes,

that coming up. NFL schedules out and now we have
four months to break it down, and you have to
give the NFL credit. They could open the season with
any game and we'd watch it. Now. You always, or
at least you try to have the defending Super Bowl champs.
(01:07):
They usually open up hosting somebody, and they gave us
the Cowboys in Tampa. And when you look at the
regular season games that rate the highest, the Cowboys are
always at the top of the list. Therefore their claim
the self proclamation of America's team. Dak Prescott coming back
from the injury taking on Tom Brady, the defending champs.
(01:28):
You dress up that primetime game, you got concerts, you
got hooplah. It's more than just a football game. And
hopefully we have fans this year that would be nice.
Easy to imagine the NFL marketing this game and this
season as a return to normal whatever that's going to be,
and have that celebratory feel. Also, you have thirty two
(01:49):
fan bases right now with smiles on their faces. Really everybody.
You could be a Bengals fan, you could be Jacksonville fan,
Tennessee Houston. Well, h Houston may not have a smile
on their face. We have to wait a while, but
it is a time for optimism with the nation's most
popular sport. And you start to look at the matchups
(02:10):
and you're doing this today or you did this last night.
You go through your team schedule. That's a win. That's
a loss, that's a win, that's a win. All of
a sudden, you're going, actually, we could start out five
and two, and then you start out two and five,
and then all of a sudden, you're like, oh well,
I'll just play fantasy this year. Peter Schreeger, our friend
(02:34):
from the NFL Network, had something. Tom Brady has played
in two hundred ninety nine NFL games. He has never
played a game in one city, but that will happen
this year and could happen twice this year. There's one
city Tom Brady has never played a football game in
(02:55):
regular season. Yes, Paul Boston. No, well he's he's played
many there, not as the opposition, but he will be
going back to Boston. New England, mclovin, you want to
take a jab at this. So New England, he's been
around the league forever. Las Vegas, No, at least I
(03:15):
don't think so, but we should check that. Oh yeah, yeah,
you said he could play two games there. Los Angeles. Yes, yes,
I just got your little third Week three this year
against the Rams and then maybe February thirteenth in Los Angeles.
Celebrity journalist wait I thought we had a stand of
(03:38):
the day. Oh is that a stat of the day? Yeah, yes, mclovin.
He was at Vegas last year twenty okay, well with
the Bucks, all right, okay, whoa the day of the day?
The day? Here comes that? What stat of the day?
(03:58):
I thought we found a loop hole there and Peter
Schreger's a little tidbit there. I have no memory of
that game. What however, I don't either. I've kept thinking, well, well,
but it wouldn't have felt like Las Vegas, even though
he played in Las Vegas against the Raiders, it wouldn't
have felt that way. I was also wondering the teams
or coaches quarterbacks who are on the hot seat or
(04:23):
the seat will get hotter depending on how they start out.
How many teams do you look at and you go
that quarterback, that coach, or maybe it's just that coach
where you go. You better start out, he better have
a good season, better have a better than five hundred
record this year. Yeah, Paul, Traditionally I answered this time
of year with Bill O'Brien and the Texans. But I
(04:45):
don't think he's there anymore, you know, But Bill O'Brien
would make the playoffs, like the Texans would make the playoffs.
Now they bowed out quickly, but they would make the playoffs. Yeah, Seaton,
the may NFL hot seat, Yeah, segment is as wonderful. Yes, yes,
we are going to corner the hot seat. Yeah yeah, yeah, Greeny,
(05:07):
you'll steal this later on. Yes, m I actually was
saving him forgets the grain. But I have one coach
who I think has a disastrous start ahead. Okay, I
want to guess who I might be thinking about a
disastrous start? Yes, who a guy who could be on
the hot seat really quickly. John Gruden. Oh, I mean
he's got the ten year deal, so I don't know
(05:29):
if he can ever be truly on the hot seat.
I was thinking Cowboys, with Mike McCarthy having to open
up in front of everybody against such a good team.
He's on fair because the Cowboys actually have like the weakest.
They have a very weak schedule, but they start out
at Tampa Bay and at the Chargers. But why do
we think somebody has a strong schedule or a week schedule.
I know it's based off of winning percentages from a
(05:50):
year ago. Every year there are four to seven teams
where you go Wow, never saw that one coming, and
they will be better than you think. And then there
are teams where you go, wow, I thought they were
going to be good this year. It happens every year.
That's why when you have people who go through fans,
who go through your team schedule, and you think, well,
(06:13):
the Lions aren't going to be any good, the Bengals
won't be any good. How good can Jacksonville be? And
then all of a sudden, after two months, you go, gosh,
those teams got like five wins already, six wins. Yeah,
pulling this might be not obvious, but a team that
might have to revamp new coach. The Vikings, they felt
(06:35):
really close to Super Bowl a couple of years ago,
and they feel like they're getting further from the super
Bowl by the year, and they may replace coach and
quarterback if they don't make the playoffs. Yeah, I think
that's a good call because Kirk d. Cousins replacement is
in the on deck circle Kelln Munn from Texas A
and M. And the year seven and nine, you're opening
(06:55):
yourself up to, hey, if you're not going to keep
well depending on whats in the division. The Bears have
a new quarterback. We don't know when Justin Fields is
gonna make his debut. We don't know what's happening with
the Packers, although they did just sign Blake Bortles. I
(07:16):
actually sat on that information for eight minutes. Blake Bortles
is in Green Bay. Talk about a non threatening hire.
Where you go, can we bring in somebody that no
one will ever think? We're bringing him in to be
our starting quarterback? Now, if you if you signed Gardner Minshew,
then you got my attention, Blake Bortles. Blake Bortles is
(07:38):
embracing the Hey, whatever you want me to do. You
want me to be the backup quarterback, third string quarterback,
I'll be happy to do that. And that's what's happening here.
That's why when Packers are bringing in quarterbacks, I went, yes,
they have to because Jordan loves not ready, who's your
backup quarterback? Then you're going to have to really bring
(07:59):
in a quarterback because this is a good team, great team.
You brought in a backup quarterback. There's a couple of
opt out games flex games with the Packers later in
the season, but you have five primetime games and I
think late in the season you're able to flex out
of that if you don't have Aaron Rodgers Joe Thomas
(08:21):
will join us. We'll talk about some of the schedules,
some of the teams, interesting surprising teams. We'll also talk
about James Harden came back last night and had a
pretty pretty nice performance. I love what he said after
the game, like, this is just hey, I got a
whole lot of swag. Are you surprised at how quickly
(08:43):
it kind of came back to you and you were
back in the floor of things. Not really, that's like
brag or anything. But I'm like, really really good at
this game. You know, I studied a game. I'm very unselfish.
I take the game and I play it the right
way every single night. So that monster right here keeps
me in a really good place. I like it. I mean,
(09:06):
it's just a matter of fact, you know. It's not
what did he call it, braggory, It's just, hey, I'm
really good at this game. Yeah when you play, you're
really good at this game. Yeah, but say, you can't
call yourself unselfish. That's one of those things that other
people has to call you. I mean, it might be
he's a great assist guy. But you can't call yourself
unself Well, he is complimenting himself, you know, not you know,
(09:30):
not to be accused of braggary. But I mean he
says he's really good. If he says he's really good,
then he can say he's unselfish if he wants to. Yeah. Pay,
I found braggary in a both the saurus and I
think it's a word braggery. I think, by the way,
I'm pretty sure he said bragg or anything. Oh oh,
I was hoping he said braggary. I don't know. Maybe
(09:51):
I'm let me hear how you surprised at how quickly
it kind of came back to you when you were
back in the flow of things. Not really that's a
like braggory thing. But I'm like, really, okay, I wish
it was braggary. We're this close to getting a new
James Harden T shirt. Yeah, yeah, it ain't braggary. If
you what is it? It ain't bragging. If you can
(10:13):
do it or you can back it up. Is that
what it is? Braggary? Yes, Ton, he kind of said
it so quick it sounded to me like braggary. Well,
I thought he said, when you came back from the Philippines,
play the beginning of this, and I thought the question, yeah,
play it. Are you surprised at how quickly it kind
of came back to you when you were back in
(10:35):
the flow of things, I thought. I thought he was
saying Philippines instead of the flow of things. So you know,
when you wear those masks, you're not your story. He
was in the Philippines. What was he doing to you?
Tell the team? Yes, have you ever seen those lists
(10:55):
of commonly misquoted rock lyrics? Yes? Oh yeah, like the
wind cries Mary, everyone gets wrong, I guess, and yeah,
rock the Caspa. That's like that Philippines. I heard that too. Yeah,
what's the other one? Um? Who will stop Lorraine instead
of the rain by credence Clearwater? Stop Lorraine? Yes, Paul
(11:17):
didn't that? Josh Mel give us I'll test the waves
down in Africa, total, I'll test the waves. He thought,
he's like a surfing song. Oh where he was fiss pumping.
I don't want to remember that. All right, welcome to
the program, dude, right, Yeah, nobody can take a left
(11:38):
turn like weekend. Yes, I'm sorry, I have a list
of misquoted rock lyrics that I'll send around for the break.
You go, you're gonna lose, you can go go ahead.
Well here's what smells like teen spirit. Here we are
now in containers. But yeah, ghostbusters, they say, is the
most commonly. Nobody understands what the words are for that. Oh, like,
(12:01):
who are you gonna call glostbusters? Yeah? I don't know why. Yeah,
there's just a lot of them. I'll send them around,
Tiny dannswer there's a bathroom on the right and Bad
Moon Rise? Oh yeah, there's a bathroom on the right. Definitely, definitely,
that'd be great if that was the latter. Like that. Okay, man,
there's a bathroom right over there. Yeah, yeah, case you're wondering,
(12:23):
Bad Moon Rose like a version, like a version touched
for the thirty first time that changed for Madame. Yeah, yeah,
that sounds more like Madonna than I know, what was
it Steve Miller's Was it a big old Jed airliner? Yeah?
I remember a comic being like, was it like bingo
(12:44):
Jed had a light on? Like that? What? Everybody gets
that one wrong? One more purple Hayes. Excuse me while
I kiss this guy whoa progressive? What's that one? Thank
you for letting me be myself. And then it was
thank you for letting me be mice. There was something
(13:05):
about that and who did that song? By the way,
slying the family stone, right, yeah, And then I think
that there's so many things they are actually talking about
a mice in there. Thank you for letting me be mice.
Here's another two tickets to Paradise by Eddy Money. I've
got two chickens to paradies. Very awful. You're the one
(13:28):
who missed you miss quote let song. We are exploring
than anyone I've ever met. You just go around making
up new lead I do. I have my own lyrics, yes,
but I but I stay in rhythm of course. Pennies
Bang Biscuits by the way, if you haven't seen these,
you can go to the website there. She's a staple
of the DP show and we wanted to get back
(13:50):
and we partner with a company Gourmet Biscuits made from scratch, healthy,
all natural ingredients, and you got a bag of one
hundred and twenty dog biscuits. Twenty percent of all the
sales we'll be given back to hand pick partners in
the pet industry. Penny was a rescue as was my
dog Winnie. And case you're wondering Winnie and Penny right
(14:12):
now or in neutral corners, they're having some problems with
one another. There. There's some jealousy going on, but we
hope to make things better between those two. Gotta let
them sort it out. Yeah, ye'll let them sort it out.
It's uncomfortable, but well, there's one thing about having a puppy.
Puppies have so much energy and they have no idea
what they're doing, and they think when they bite you
(14:34):
that that's playing. Well, Penny doesn't want to play anymore
because Winnie just keeps biting her and never stops, and
Penny will just like knock her down and then wants
to go and wants to leave Winnie to her to herself.
We'll fix it, though, but we'll get phone calls coming up.
Got our poll? What's the poll question we have today?
(14:56):
But okay, we have some schedule polls there. You know
that's going keep people in their car, some questions about
how you rant teams. Yeah, it sounds worse than it
actually is. That was not a good tease I got.
I would have to have Todd right a tease for
that poll. Well, wait, what do you have anything interesting?
I think these people depend on us every day mclovin,
(15:17):
so that we wanted to rip on the bad teams
off the right. So they're eight teams that only have
one primetime game. Wait, did you want to do the
least interesting team? Will we have a night? We came
up with a way to be nicer because we don't
want a fan base to get mad at you because
of stupid stuff. We well know Paulie came up with
the idea, So I'm just gonna blame PAULI. Well, what
if you said they're eight teams with one primetime game?
(15:40):
Which team actually deserves more than one primetime game? Like
who's more interesting than the NFL viewed? Like the Jets
are on here? But if you do that, then you'll
get somebody who's better than all the other least interesting teams.
But there will be somebody who will be the least
interesting team if you do a poll question, right, Yes,
so we and so it's basically meet Texans Lions battle
(16:02):
for the last I would imagine, Well, Texans not interesting,
not at all, and doesn't seem like they can win
without Deshaun Watson, Like, unless you know the quarterback they
took out of Stanford Davis with Davis Mills. David Mills,
think what he's done working on his hedge fund? Come
out to the practice field. I don't think that's a
(16:22):
real name. That's like one Tree Hill with Davis Mills
was a quarterback. Now come in here, Davis Mills, come
on Dow. But they they're gonna tank, right because they're
gonna probably need Have you heard anything? I think they tank.
I just don't think they're any good. Not to put
you on the spot. Are you hearing any Deshaun Watson
news at all? It seems quiet? Well that's what I
brought up with Mike Florio yesterday. When it's quiet, that's
(16:44):
when things get done. And you're starting to hear a
little bit more about some things going on behind the
scenes with the Packers and Aaron Rodgers. Like if they
if they give him total autonomy and that is he
can stay, he can be involved, he can look at
the roster. I mean, I think you're gonna have to
say we're going to make you quarterback GM, then maybe
(17:09):
you have a chance to keep him in Green Bay.
If it's not about the money, which it's always about
the money. Then what it's you know, how do we
solve this? Can we salvage this? And that's what I
would say to Aaron, Just tell us how do we,
aside from firing the GM, how do we salvage this?
(17:30):
And if he said, all right, make me the GM,
let me have control over the roster, then the packers
have to make that decision. Are you willing to give
him total autonomy which would be historical? Yes, he said.
Do we even know that Aaron Rodgers actually said he
wants the GM fired? Well, I don't know that we do.
(17:51):
You're right, there's a lot of things that are out there.
But I'll go back to what Florio said. Florio said,
this is a guy who has no qualms, open book.
I want to host Jeopardy, Like he wants to host Jeopardy,
but he doesn't tell you anything about what his real job,
his day job is, of what he wants and what
he wants to do. All we do is we hear secondhand,
(18:14):
third person rumor inuendo. Yeah, pull the report that about
the GM and Aaron Rodgers. Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports
reported over the weekend last weekend, like a week and
a half ago that Rogers wants Goodencoast fired and is
damant that we will not return to the Packers with
that GM still in charge. Yeah, mcle well, you describe
(18:36):
sounds very Tom Brady inspired. You know, is that really
what he's getting it? Yes? Yes, I think that's Russell Wilson.
I think these quarterbacks look and say, wait a minute,
I gotta go out there with whatever you So you
go to the grocery store and then you come back
and I go, what are we making this weekend? Shishka
(18:56):
bab okay. And that's what happens. And these quarterbacks are saying, wait,
we need to have player empowerment here. And Brady Brady
only had a little bit. But he brings in Antonio Brown,
who Russ wanted back in Seattle. He brought in Gronk,
so he didn't have that much of a say, but
(19:18):
he had enough of us say that caught the attention
of these quarterbacks. And that's why Russell Wilson was miserable
at the super Bowl. He sees Patrick Mahomes and he
sees Tom Brady and he wants to know where am I?
Where do I fit in here? And when he came
back and then he came on our show a couple
of days later. That's when he started talking about I'm
(19:40):
not happy here, and I want to seat at the
table and I want to have input. Deshaun Watson wanted
to talk about who was going to be the coach.
You didn't even want to interview the guy that he
wanted in there as a coach, Eric b Enemy. That's
what these quarterbacks are asking for now. Doesn't mean the
teams are going to turn it over to them. I
wouldn't because what do they know about free agency or
(20:04):
the draft? Like I unless you're studying with us, unless
you're working out players. And then Nike, if you say
to Joe Burrow, hey, Penny Sewell the lineman, or do
you want Jamar Chase, Like I'm gonna trust Joe Burrow
that if he says, look, we can't pass up Jamar Chase.
(20:25):
He's my former teammate. He's unbelievable. Okay, this is you
making this decision. You make it better. And if you
have special information on a player that you played with
or against, then I want that information. But I don't
want Tom Brady Tyke talking about Kyle Trask. Yeah, pulling
(20:47):
you know, it's fascinating. You mentioned that to Shaun Watson.
Wanted to seat at the table, wanted to say and
what the management is doing. You can find about one
hundred different people on social media, reporters, NFL people saying
you should absolutely give DeShawn Watson. He's work for this team,
he's done everything, he's under contract. Those people aren't saying
that anymore. You, yeah, the go up to bat for
DeShawn Watson to make sure he has control of what
(21:08):
this team does. It doesn't seem to be a topic anymore.
Let's take a break here. Joe Thomas, the former Cleveland
Brown offensive lineman, will join us. What did he make
of the schedule release? What are the games that he's
circling here? And he also has some thoughts about Tim Tebow.
We'll talk to Joe Thomas. He'll join us coming up.

see I knew somebody who used to sing Guns n'

that's yeah, Paradise. Yeah, you get that very nice city
or supposed to be Paradise. City. Joe Thomas, NFL Network analysts,
former Brown's ten time Pro Bowl offensive tackle. You can
(22:58):
follow him on Twitter at Joe Thomas seventy three. Thirteen
nine football schedule kicks off Week two Giants, Redskins, Washington
football team on NFL Network. Joe, when you played, how
much did you care about the schedule when it was released?
It was a big deal for me. I was a
(23:18):
little bit heavier than I am right now, and I
just wanted to make sure that we weren't opening up
in September in Florida anywhere, because I knew that was
going to be absolutely dreadful. And then actually, one of
the other things that I look for, I did not
like playing on turf. As my body was breaking down
later in my career, every time we had a turf
game on that schedule, I was looking forward to being
(23:39):
able to check that off and not having to do
that one again. So it was all about the pain
and misery that my body was going to go through.
That was the first thing that my eyes went to
with the schedule release. Worst playing field you ever played on, honestly,
the old Buffalo Bills Stadium. It was not quite AstroTurf
but it was just one step above AstroTurf, and it
(24:01):
was so hard and it left you sore at least
through the next Sunday. Yeah, a lot of people talked
about the Vent in Philadelphia, but I don't the old VET.
I don't know if you got a chance to play
on that, but there were a lot of players who
said when you fell on that turf, it was like
it was like green colored cement exactly. I never played
(24:22):
on the VET, but Camp Randall Stadium when I was
a true freshman at Wisconsin, they had that old AstroTurf
that was really brutal, and you come out of that
game and you would have no skin left on your
elbows and on your knees. But I did play at
the Metal Lands before the New York Football team's transition
to their new home, and that was a pretty tough stadium.
But even more than the field was the locker room.
(24:44):
The locker room was like those old school high school
Jim lockers where you had like the mesh metal and everything.
You know, you'd put the lock over there, and then
everybody was sharing those wooden benches and then you know,
there's maybe twenty showers, but only five of them work
and only three out of those five actually have hot water.
And then you look around, there's five guys under one
(25:05):
shower head. That's not weird, right, got a little awkward
those moments. There no quick movements, no quick movements. What
stood out last night with the schedule release? Well, as
a Browns fan, I love that first game for the
Browns going to Kansas City where their season ended last
season in the playoffs. The Browns are probably gonna have
nine new starters on defense, and so this is going
(25:27):
to be their measuring stick. Right, you can talk about
how great the defense is going to be this season
and how it's been overhauled and they're going to be
a team that can finally win a championship. Well, hey,
week one, you got a test. You're gonna go and
play the Kansas City Chiefs, the best offense in the
NFL over the last several seasons. So that was the
first one that stuck out for me. Yeah, but also,
do you want that test right out of the gate.
(25:49):
If you're the Browns, you know can't go into Kansas City.
I'm not saying that. If I was on the Browns,
that was the game that I wanted to start with.
But as a fan, that was one that's stuck out.
But certainly if they come out of that game and
they're able to hold that Kansas City Chiefs offense down
a little bit, I mean, they really should feel great
(26:09):
about themselves and great about the things that they were
able to build through the offseason. And actually it comes
at a good point because if you think about the
Browns defense completely overhauled, they're not going to show their
stuff in preseason. But the Browns defense is going to
have an advantage because they kind of know what the
Chief's offense is going to look like. So really, if
you do have to face the Chiefs offense, it's probably
(26:29):
good for this Browns defense to do it in Week
one where they can have that element of surprise. Do
you think there's any questions about Baker Mayfield be in
the future quarterback with the Cleveland Browns. I don't think
there's questions about him being the future. There's certainly questions
about how high the ceiling is. I think he showed
last year he's their franchise guy. He's the guy that
(26:50):
they can build around, but where is that ceiling? Can
he become one of those top five quarterbacks, Or is
he going to be sort of a ten to fifteen
range quarterback where he's really good, you don't have to
pay him at the top of the market, so you
kind of build around him. Or is he going to
be like Aaron Rodgers Russell Wilson where he can lead
a team by himself and you don't necessarily have to
(27:11):
worry about the pieces quite as much. Yeah, I just
wonder because I want to see another season before I'm
going to give him one hundred million dollars, and it
feels like that next quarterback up it just makes more
than the previous quarterback. To me, it's financial insanity because
Baker Mayfield is not Patrick Mahomes or he's not Aaron Rodgers.
(27:32):
I mean, he's not these Russell Wilson, but he's going
to be paid a whole lot more than those guys.
That's the part that would make me nervous unless you
think there's a sweet spot where you go, you know what,
he's a twenty five million dollars a year quarterback. If
we can both agree on that, both sides, then I
think that that can work out in the long term
for both. But I don't know if you know these
(27:54):
agents go, no, you deserve forty million. You're as good
as Dak Prescott likes. That's where things get a little tricky, Joe. Yeah, Well,
it's a factor of two things. One, obviously, it's the
escalating salary cap because the TV money keeps going up.
But two, I think what you're seeing is that teams
are slowly realizing and slowly adapting to the fact that
(28:16):
the quarterback in today's NFL is more important to the
team's success than ever before, so they should capture an
ever greater portion of the salary cap. And that's why
you're seeing these quarterback contracts for guys that aren't the
best quarterback in the NFL. Maybe it's those, you know,
even middle of the range starters. They're still so important
to the success of the team that that's why they're
getting those huge contracts. And coaches and gms they're in
(28:38):
a bind, right if they lose their franchise quarterback, they
realize they're probably two years from getting fired, so they've
got the gun to their head when they are in
those contract negotiations with agents. How would you feel if
you were a Pro Bowl lineman with the Packers right now?
I would be very nervous because I know that our
team is going to be a lot different with Aaron
Rodgers under center than it is maybe Jordan or anybody else.
(29:01):
And now I could maybe think, wow, you know, taking
sides here, who's right who's wrong? But in the end,
I'm thinking, Hey, this team has a chance to win
a Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers, and if he walks
out the door for whoever's fault, we may be in
a little bit of trouble and we may struggle to
become a winning team in twenty twenty one. But would
you have a say in anything? As a All Pro
(29:24):
offensive lineman, future Hall of Famer? Could you go to
management and ask questions? Could you go to management and say, hey,
I played against this guy in free agency, you know
he's great, or hey, don't sign that guy. I didn't
think he was that good. Like are you allowed to
have that? I think when you've been around long enough
and you've had enough success at your position, any smart
(29:46):
front office, But did you do this with Cleveland's I
didn't go out of my way because I didn't have
to Dan like they were coming to me and saying, hey,
what do you think about this guy? Hey, this is
a pass rusher that's going to be on the market.
We're looking to add a defense. It's a end. What
did you think about him? Give us your five minute
scouting report? Because they value information, and I think that's
(30:07):
what any good GM is going to do. He's not
locking himself in a room and watching film. He's going
out and he's asking all the people that he has
in his scouting department, all the coaches, trying to gather
information on all those players before they go out, and
ultimately he makes the decision. Did they ever ask you
your opinion on quarterbacks? No, because I don't really have
(30:27):
a very good sense of what makes a great quarterback
other than what everybody else does. Like, I can see, okay,
he's a great leader, he throws a nice pass, he
makes good decisions, he's got a nice snap count so
I can get out of my stands on time. But
as far as like the intricacies of deciding when and
where to throw the football, I don't understand the coverages
and the way a quarterback needs to read a defense
(30:50):
well enough to be able to say this guy is
better than you know, this other starter that's potentially out there.
If you were on the Jags, what would your feeling
be about Tim Tebow getting a chance? You know, it
would be a little bit lukewarm. I think from a
player's standpoint, you're going to see the Tim Tebow circus
coming to town, and as a player, you just kind
of want to avoid some of that in general, because
(31:12):
you just want to focus on your job. You don't
want to focus on the shenanigans that comes when you
signed Tim Tebow. But on the other hand, you're kind
of thinking, maybe if I'm Trevor Lawrence, hey, this takes
a little bit of pressure off me. Now they're going
to be asking me about Tim Tebow rather than Hey,
why did you screw up the snapcount? Why did everybody
move and you weren't ready for the snapper? Hey why
did you throw the ball into the dirt three times
(31:34):
in a row? And Matt scrimmage. So it does alleviate
I think some of the pressure off the young guys,
but maybe some of the older guys, especially those skill guys,
they tend to have a little bit bigger egos. They
like to have the attention on them, and when that
attention is on your fourth string tight end, I can
see that that would maybe be a little bit of
a stone in your underwear. But it's ninety player roster.
(31:54):
Then it gets down to fifty three on game day.
I mean that's a big leap there, and I think
people are playing he's going to make the roster. Yeah,
But I think people like they're angry about this. Former
players are angry that Tebo doesn't deserve this. He's polarizing.
I think Urban is just doing him a favor. Come
(32:15):
on in and you know this might be your last eran,
then maybe you join my staff as you know, as
a coach. I don't see him playing. The people that
are angry are way off base because, first of all,
NFL teams have been asking Tim Tebow since he was
basically run out of the league as a quarterback, to hey,
we'd love to bring you back if you want to
(32:36):
try tight end, because they realize that he's got a
great worth work ethic and he's a guy that could
potentially be a good locker room player because he does
the little things right as a professional. And let's be honest,
that fourth string tight end job in the NFL, it's
kind of like the position of assistant to the manager.
If you run a company where it's not really all
(32:58):
that important. You're probably not going to see the field.
And you know what, if your cousin's looking for a job,
you can give them that job because it really, in
the end, it doesn't really matter who has that position,
because it's not critical to the success or failure or
the team or the business. You were called for holding.
You know how many times you were called for holding
in your career? I don't. I don't believe I ever
was Dane Okay, now that I remember, they flagged somebody
(33:21):
wearing number seventy three seventeen times in your career. How
many times do you think you actually held in your career?
You know, the conversation around holding is so funny because
I think the general fan thinks that holding is like
when you take your hands and you grab somebody's jersey.
But when those NFL officials would actually come in and
talk to us, they talk much more about your feet
(33:41):
and where your feet was in relation to your defender,
and if your defender was beyond you and has beaten you,
and then you grab them and then hold them and
then stop their ability to get to the ball carrier.
That's technically what gets called for holding from a flag.
So I don't remember ever being beat and having to
grab and hold my player. And if that is the
exact question that you're asking, yeah, but it's kind of
(34:03):
like hooking somebody, like you can make yourself look guilty,
but if you do it in sort of the context
of saying, hey, we're gonna let you do this, the
defender knows we're gonna let you do this. Just don't
do this or you're gonna get flagged. So you sort
of know what the ground rules are. Yeah, as a lineman,
you know, like obviously, like I just mentioned, you know
(34:25):
the ground rules are, don't get your feet beat and
then grab and restrain that player in their ability to
get to the ball carrier. But I think it's interesting
when I watch these guys out there. They're actually not
holding in a lot of cases, but the ball runs
past them, and then instead of just letting them go
and acting like nothing happened, you know, the first thing
they do is they throw their hands up in here like, oh,
(34:46):
I'm not holding anymore. And even if they weren't holding,
a lot of times, the ref season acting guilty and
he throws the flag, and it just drives me nuts.
You see those young tight ends do it more than
anybody else because they haven't yet realized that as soon
as you throw your hands in the air like I'm
not guilty, that's when the flag comes. But who is
mad at you? What? You know, Edge Rushier, you know what?
(35:10):
Some of them have gotten mad at me over the years.
But I think that there was a pretty healthy respect
amongst most of the guys that I want against. The
guys that I had the biggest beef with usually were
those guys like linebackers that you didn't see all that often,
but that would get really pissed off if you were
peeling them off a pile or you were kind of
giving them that extra shove as the ball carrier went by.
(35:31):
Those were usually guys that I ended up beefing with.
But the players, like you know, the the James Harrisons
and the Terrell Suggs that you're going against every single
player for sixty five plays, there's a healthy understanding of
like what I need to do to get my job
done and what you need to do to get your
job done. And they get it, Like if I beat
them and I pink ighim and I land on top
of them, they shouldn't have got beat in the first place. Yeah,
(35:54):
But if you go at their legs though, that's when
it's different, right, when that's dirty. Right, if if you're
trying to go at their legs, especially from the side
or the back, Like, I totally understand them getting upset
because you're going after their livelihood, Like they are picturing
their children and their wife, and like if they get hurt,
especially a guy that doesn't have a big guarantee contract,
(36:16):
like they could be it for their NFL career, so
they've got to be able to protect their family also,
And going dirty and trying to injure a guy like that,
I don't think that has any place in the game,
and I'd get pissed for them, But it doesn't like
they don't have things at the bottom of the pile anymore.
Like you guys have cleaned up your act when you
get into that scrum and guys you're grabbing, and there's
(36:36):
still some of that when you're the Only time it
really happens, Dan is if there's a fumble, right and
and somebody jumps on it, and when they're in that
kind of like baby cradle position, it's really hard to
get the ball out and so there's a little bit
of you know, eye gouging and poking and you know
stuff like that. The bottom growing though, help me understand that.
(36:56):
So the last time that happened, actually it didn't happened
to me, thankfully, it happened to Alex mac he was
our center in Cleveland and Seawan Smith, I think he
was playing for the Chiefs at the time, and there
was some crotch grabbing going on at the bottom of
a pile. And actually it worked in the Chief's favor though,
because Alex Scott right up and I think he tried
to punch on right in the face, got a fifteen
yard penalty. And so that was sort of the moral
(37:19):
of that story, like, Hey, even if somebody goes for
the crotch grab you can't get that mad. You just
wait till the next play and then try to get
him back, because if you try to retaliate right there
when the ref is standing there, it's not going to
end up well for you. They're gonna get you. Hey,
great to talk to you, Joe, Thanks for joining us

sixth man. He had the bounce pass to Jeff Green,
one of his eleven assist He had eighteen points, came
off the bench for the first time since he was
in Oklahoma City after missing eighteen games with that right
(39:33):
hamstring injury. It's courtesy of the y S Network. Here's
James Harden on being the sixth man for the Nets
right now. That's sixth man role I can. I've mastered
that as well. You know, I got an award for
that for that role. That role is easy, come in
and impact the game, you know, do whatever it texts
to win, where it's defensively or officially. You know. So,
but that's my role, no matter what. I mastered that.
(39:57):
They gave me an award for that. He mastered that
all in addition to all the other things he's messed.
I love that, dude. Yeah, we haven't heard from Harden
in a while, so good to have you back, James.
Now stay healthy for the playoffs. Here, Uh, let's see
what else do we have. McLevin. Did you settle on
a poll question? So here are the two options, and
we got to narrow down the choices a little bit here.
(40:19):
So there were eight teams that got only one primetime game.
In other words, the NFL didn't think much of them.
Do any of these teams deserve more? The New York Jets,
I was a little surprised that they only got one game, Okay,
Zach Wilson. The Detroit Lions, one has probably one too many.
The Jaguars, Yeah, that's a shot. The Jaguars. That's a
(40:42):
little surprising with Trevor Lawrence a little bit. Yeah, and
Urban Meyer, you know, the Bengals. You got me just
excited about Jamar Chase earlier in the show. That's a
pretty Texans note. The Panthers, they're gonna be an okay team,
aren't they. Well you have Sam Darnold and you have
Christian McCaffrey. Okay, the Broncos only if Aaron Rodgers. This
(41:08):
one surprised me. The Atlanta Falcons only have one, they
have a veteran quarterback. They add Kyle Pitts, but I
don't know the Falcons. Falcons Saint Shootout Week nine, Thursday Night, Na. Yeah,
you know, pulling. When I heard the list, I think
I'm most surprised about the Jaguars because the Jaguars might
not be good, but they're interesting, very interesting. They've got
(41:30):
at ten Yeah, look again, not good. Interesting. Yeah, I'm
interested to see Trevor Lawrence and I'm interested to see
Zack Wilson justin fields like new blood at that position.
You know, is Trey Lance playing by Week nine? I
think the Niners played Jacksonville. Could Trey Lance face off
(41:52):
against Trevor Lawrence? Yeah, pulling. Trevor Lawrence had six National
TV games last year at Clemson. I look back at
my notes Zion Williamson. His one year at Duke, he
played on National TV thirty one times. His first season
the Pros, he played on national TV six times. Yeah.
The flip side of this whole question. All right, these
teams have five the maximum number of primetime games, which
(42:14):
one deserves less. The Packers, the Saints Saints, Cowboys, Seahawks, Steelers, Ravens, Rams, Niners, Chiefs,
and Bucks. The Saints without Drew Brees Ya race of flags, like,
that's a lot for them, I think if Well, I'm
curious about Jameis Winston, but that doesn't mean it's automatic
(42:36):
tune in factor for me. Like Mike Thomas coming back,
Alvin Kamara, what about the Steelers. I'm fascinated because they
they're all in with Ben and you know this is
his last go round, So I'd say, yeah, Nag Harris, Yeah,
(42:58):
Mena Kimes will join us a little bit later on
and loan from ESPN. We'll take a look at the
schedule a little closer. Phone calls coming up as well.
