Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio Final Hour on this Monday, Dan and m
Dannet's Dan Patrick's Show Back Row consists of Fritzie mclovin
is off this week, more phone calls, best and worst
of the weekend, What you Like you didn't Like? Eight
seven seven three d p show. Also, Reggie Miller will
join us coming up in about twenty minutes from now.
(00:22):
A few things to talk to Reggie about, including Damian Lillard.
Does he want out of Portland? Does he want others
to say that he wants out of Portland? Either way,
the Blazers better be listening because if you read between
the lines, feels like Damian Lillard once out of Portland.
It's been an interesting week for Team USA men's basketball.
(00:43):
They lost Bradley Beale because of COVID, Kevin Love dropped out.
They added JaVale McGee and Kelden Johnson. Not exactly dream teamers,
but they needed a big guy and JaVale McGhee does
some silly things on the court at times, but he's
got a lot of length. He's one couple of titles here.
As for Kelton Johnson, it's okay to admit and you
(01:05):
never heard of him. He's a twenty one year old
forward who plays for the Spurs. And keep in mind,
Team USA still has Durant Lillard Jason Tatum. Other countries
would love to be dealing with the same difficulties Team
USA has had. But despite those losses to Nigeria and Australia,
America is still figures to be the heavy heavy, heavy
(01:28):
favorites to win a gold medal. They beat Spain last
night and now they go to Tokyo. So we'll talk
to reg about all things NBA basketball coming up. Let's
see update the pull results there, Todd, if you can
which athlete stock would you invest in today? Show Hey
thirty seven percent, Trevor Lawrence, It's twenty six percent, Markawa,
(01:50):
twenty five percent, Colin more Kawa winning the Open Championship.
You're not even twenty five Showhyo, Tani, you got Yannas now, like,
there's a lot of young players doing some pretty amazing things.
If I was going to invest in Showhy, it would
have been last year. It would have been the year
before that. It would have been when he was just
(02:14):
coming over to the United States. But he had another
home run yesterday. But you're looking, you know, like justin Herbert,
you'd invest in that if he was his stock. But
it feels like, you know, with what more Kala did,
what Jannis is doing. And you know, because Jannis has
got two MVPs and he's on the verge of winning
(02:35):
a title. There's only a couple of players in the
history of the sport who've accomplished that by this age,
by the age of twenty six. I think Bill Russell
was in there, Tim Duncan is in there, Lebron was
close to doing it. But this is Yannis right now
doing something and you know, stepping up in a big
(02:58):
moment with his season performance. Because we've seen where great
during the regular season, and I always maintain that they
were a great regular season team. They're built for a
regular season. They were not built for a seven game series.
Just weren't. They've made a lot of good moves here,
Mike Budenholzer, who's been criticized and rightfully so, for some
(03:21):
of the moves in previous postseasons, even this year's postseason,
but he's made some moves here. Now it's up to
the Phoenix Suns to try and to counter and as
great as Jannis is. There was something he said over
the weekend that I loved hearing, And you know, I
sometimes you listen because you're a journalist, you're a sports announcer.
(03:46):
Other times I listen as a parent, Like I'll listen
to somebody and what they say or how they say it,
or how they conduct themselves. You know, I was very
critical Bryson Deshambo, who's around the age of my son,
and I thought that he was a little child, he
was a baby, didn't get his way, he threw a
temper tantrum. Then you listening to Colin more Kawa after
(04:06):
winning the Open championship, it sounded like he was thirty five,
not twenty five. But what Janna said over the weekend
really stood out, like this is about staying humble, and
this is what he had to say from my experience,
right like when I think about like, oh, yeah, I
did this, you know, I'm so great. I had thirty,
(04:27):
I had twenty five, ten and ten or whatever the
case might be. Because you're gonna think about that or
we want this and that. Usually the next day you're
gonna suck, you know, simple as that. You like the
next few days you're gonna be terrible. And uh, I
figured out like a mindset to have that, Like when
you focus on the past, that's your ego. I did this,
(04:49):
you know, um we were able to you know, beat
this team. For all we did. I did this in
the past. I want that in the past and for
in the future. Is my pride, Like yeah, next game,
game five, I do this and this and this. You know,
I'm going down and that's your pride tale Like it
doesn't happen like you're right here. And I kind of
(05:12):
like tried to focus in the you know, in the moment,
in the present. And that's humility that's been humbled, that's
not setting no expectation. That's going out there enjoying the game,
competing a high level. And I think I've had people
throughout my life that helped me that. But that's a
skill that I've tried to like perfect it. Yeah, I
(05:32):
mastered it, and it's been working so far. That's a
wonderful answer dealing with being in the moment. Don't talk
about what you did. I mean at that age, come
over here and do what he's doing, how he's done it,
how he's improved. It's easy to criticize his free throw shooting,
(05:53):
and I have because at some point somebody has to
help him with just the rhythm of a free throw.
But he is so close to perfection. I don't need
him to shoot threes. But if he's a seventy five
percent free throw shooter, who it's gonna be some long
nights for NBA players dealing with him. But keep in mind,
(06:17):
you come over to the United States. We didn't know
what he was, we didn't know who he was, and
he made himself better every year. So will he get
better as a free throw shooter. I hope, But he's
got to get a rhythm down, and it starts from
your legs moving up and then a nice smooth release.
(06:38):
I don't need him to shoot threes, because put him
anywhere else on the floor, he's going to score. But
the free throw shooting, if he gets that to the
point where you can't do the hacker shack, then there's
no way you can stop him because and maybe he'll
get that. If you get the free throw down, you
should be able to get that fifteen to eighteen foot
(07:01):
shot down because if they back off you, you don't
have to have a jumper. You just have to have
them respect that shot. Then it makes you even more dangerous.
But I mean, that's a great success story with the
NBA and the Milwaukee Bucks. And he chose to stay there.
And then they made the trade for Drew Holiday, and
they gave up a lot for Holiday. And Holiday is
(07:22):
supposed to be really good and supposed to be a
really good defender. That last game was career defining for him.
Now you got to do it one more time. But
because Janis stayed, they got Holiday, Chris Middleton has emerged,
Brook Lopez, Conaton. You have some players who are doing
(07:43):
some really impressive things for the Bucks. Because the Greek
freak will not win this by himself. But when you
have that team effort, and if you if you look
at the Suns, you go, well, you got Aid and
Chris Paul and Devin Booker. But the role players, the
bench players, that's where I think that they've lacked. And
I think that's where Milwaukee has taken advantage of the
(08:04):
Phoenix Suns. But if you have a big lead like
they did, no like Milwaukee was trailing by sixteen points,
the biggest comeback in an NBA Finals game since the
twenty twelve Game four Finals, when the Miami heat rallied
from seventeen down. Sounded like a stat of the day.
(08:29):
There you go, just stat and it's a day. It's
stat of the day, duds. That what? By the way,
the one night when the whole world comes together the
world's biggest show in the world's biggest stage, opening Ceremony
of the Tokyo Olympics, Friday, seven thirty Eastern on NBC. Yes, Polly,
(08:52):
you're talking about Janie's development. His first year in the league,
he was nineteen. He averaged seven points and four rebounds.
He didn't make an All Star tea until his fourth
year in the league. His second year average twelve and seventeen.
Then he kind of went crazy. But just to compare it,
Zion Williamson at the same age average twenty three points
in his second years, Zion's averaging twenty seven and Yannis
(09:13):
the second year he is everaging twelve. Yeah, you almost
sleep on how quickly Zion's become a score. Yeah. And
I but if you said, who would you rather have
Yannis or Zion? Right, yeah, and you might have people say, well,
you know, I like Zion if he develops that three
point shot and then you're not going to be able
to stop him inside. What Yannis does defensively, I mean
(09:37):
just that that alone is value. I mean it might
be the you know, one, two, three top defenders in
the league, but he just so long and covers up
so much territory in there. Now you add the offense,
and he's getting better with his offense. Kawhi Leonard was
a defensive player. When he first got to San Antonio,
he wasn't known as a score and then he developed
(10:00):
and he got better. He added to his game, and
that's what you love. Like these next two or three
years for Zion, the next two or three years for Luca,
what are you doing with your game? What are you
doing differently? How much better are you Because there will
be players that just level out and that's it, and
(10:20):
you wonder if they're going to get better. Like I'm
waiting for Anthony Davis to be unstoppable. I want him
to be consistently unstoppable. Now he has shown pockets, but
he's got to stay healthier. He got to truly commit
to his body and invest in it, literally invest in
it to say I'm going to take it to the
(10:42):
next level. Because you know this is the escalator. Lebron
is coming down. Anthony Davis should be going up and
maybe they meet somewhere. Maybe a d is already moving
up past Lebron. But Lebron can't be in better shape
than you. And he's ten years older. West in Indiana,
(11:03):
best and worst of the weekend? West, what do you
have for me? Hey? Dan? The first time all time
five nine, two ten. Uh, didn't have the worst of
the weekend, but my best of the weekend. Uh, it's
got to travel up to Michigan and see my grandma
who is ninety seven for the first time since COVID.
(11:23):
So that was wonderful. And uh, I know it's been
a little bit, but you guys are talking about the
frisbee drinking game earlier. Yeah. Um, around here, we have
a couple of names for it. We call it either
beersbee or frizbeer. Oh okay, and uh suck it back row,
all right, thank you West. Well, it's only Fritzie back there. Wow.
(11:45):
McLevin is in Iceland? Is it cold in Iceland? Now?
He's wearing a like a down jacket right now in
a hat in the picture he sent, Yes, Don is
he gonna send that he like, where's Waldo? Where's mcleven picture?
Does that be kind of fun in the middle of
the mountains and all those houses to see where his
little face is somewhere? Yeah. See, people in la are
(12:06):
also wearing that same outfit, so you really can't tell
why Russell he oh remember that one came in hat,
puffy jacket, flip flops and flip flops, and I went,
welcome to La. Hey. You know it gets cold that
marine layer in the morning. I go, are you kidding me?
I take that temperature all day long come wintertime on
(12:28):
the East coast. Let's see Marco in Arizona. Hey, Marco, Hey,
Dan Patrick's show real quick. I wanted to get to
the Ramones topic just because this one a lot of
people don't know. The Ramones copied there sound from a
band from Detroit. Actually it's an all black band that
(12:51):
played punk music called Death. A band called Death. There's
a documentary on them and it's fantastic seat and I
think you would love it. But my best of the
weekend was Nicia tates Win. I know you guys don't
talk a lot of MMA, but her backstory on her
brain injury, on her recovery, is pretty awesome. So her
win was pretty big. And then obviously the worst the
sun's dropping the ball. You know, hopefully they can rally back,
(13:12):
but you know, come on, Valley, we got a rally.
We got to do this, all right, Marco, thank you.
I'm not aware of that band or that documentary, but like,
I'm not down on the Ramones. I'm just not up
on the Ramones. I gotta you know, if the music
comes on and be like whatever, it's too late, right,
they already know that I don't like the Ramones. Doesn't
matter what I say, right, And I don't know that
(13:33):
at this point you're gonna like rediscover and be like whoa,
now I get it. I'm not no, I know, yeah, yeah,
that's okay, that's all right. You shouldn't feel pressured to
like the Ramones. Thank you. See, we'll take a break.
Reggie Miller will join us coming up next fifteen after
the hour. This is the Dan Patrick Show. Go to
rock Auto dot Com all the parts your car or
truck will ever need. And I turned my younger brother
(13:56):
onto rock Auto dot Com because he's a gearhead. And
I say, look, he was looking for something for his Porsche.
He's one who corrects you with it's not a Porsche.
It's a Porsche. And whenever i'm you know, say something
about oh I saw this Porsche, he goes Porsche and
I go okay, I said. And he was looking for
a part for his nine nine six and I told
(14:19):
him to stay in his lane, by the way, literally
stay in your lane. Rockato dot com and this was
a family business founded by automotive engineers in nineteen ninety nine.
Two goals in mind give you direct access to all
the parts information hidden in the computers and catalogs behind

on the iHeartRadio app. At FSR or stream us live
on the Peacock app. More phone calls coming up. Team
USA Beach Spain last night head to Tokyo and Game
six will be tomorrow night in Milwaukee as the Bucks
(15:22):
try to close out the Phoenix Suns up three games
to two. We bring in the Hall of Famer Turner
Sports NBA analyst Reggie Miller joining us on the program.
Good morning, Redge, how are you now working? We just
a week ago, seven days ago, when it was two
(15:42):
nothing Phoenix Suns. Everyone in Milwaukee thought it was over.
Everyone was dwot ready to get rid of coats, booten Holzer,
Javist was going to be a forever choke artist. Now
now they are on the verge of winning in India Championship,
(16:05):
their first in what fifty plus years? What a week
makes right? And didn't you and I talk about? Well,
Phoenix did what they had to do, They secured their
home court advantage, went back to Milwaukee. That's what Milwaukee did.
But Milwaukee went on the road, got Game five and
(16:26):
is in total control of this series. You expect Milwaukee
to win Tuesday night? I do unless and there's one
caveat because we have not really seen that this series.
Chris Paul hasn't had a signature game yet, and I
think we're all waiting on that. Booker has been great,
(16:50):
But the other half of that equation is Chris Paul.
He had signature moments versus the Lakers, versus Denver games
I'm talking about, and versus the Clippers. There was always
one game he had where he was phenomenal. Game six.
It has to be that for him. If not, then
(17:10):
this series is over. I mentioned last week that by Thursday,
we're either going to be talking about Jannis and getting
two MVPs in a title at this age, which is
really really rare in the history of the sport, or
will probably be talking about Chris Paul finally elevating himself
into a different category as a point guard. I know
(17:32):
Devin Booker will be the MVP of Phoenix wins and
Yannis will be the MVP if the Milwaukee Bucks win,
but do you think those are still are we going
to be Is that fair to Chris Paul. If let's
say the Phoenix Suns lose this, are we going to
look at Chris Paul as opposed to the rest of
the team. Monnie Williams. Should it all be on Chris
(17:53):
Paul that Hey, didn't get it done again, you led
two games to none with home court advantage at thirty No,
I think Chris Paul will probably get a pass because
of his age and because of the hard docks. It
has taken Chris Paul to even get to the NBA Finals,
(18:14):
and I'm not saying this will be his last look
at it, but he will get a long pass because
of the signature games along the way. I think people
will remember those more as opposed to he just hasn't
played great here in the finals and there's still time
for him again. I think he needs to put a
(18:35):
stamp and have a signature thirty plus twelve assists, but
impactful points like he had versus the Clippers in that
close out game, like he had against Denver in that
close out game. Those close out games, he was phenomenal
and we just haven't seen that. And I give all
the credit to Drew Holliday, PJ. Tucker, Pat Connington. Those
(18:59):
three guys have been the principal defenders on CP three
and they've done a great job of really just locking
him down. Yeah, my point that I've been making is that.
I know we want to focus on the stars, but
it's the role players. You can go down through history.
You can have great players. There's a role player who
does something, whether it's baseball football, like Malcolm Butler with
(19:20):
the Patriots. Nobody had heard of him. You know. You
get a role player like John Paxon or Steve Kerr
who hits a big shot. You can have star power.
It's what kind of contributions am I getting. It feels
like Milwaukee has depth that they can rely on, and
Montie Williams isn't sure what he has with Phoenix. And
I mentioned Pat Connington, but people are not talking in
(19:42):
a Bobby Cortise Jr. He has been fantastic throughout these playoffs,
barely sniffed the floor in that Brooklyn series at all,
and then comes back in Atlanta and has a huge,
huge impact because of the injury t Honist and has
been fantastic in the finals here. And you're right, I
(20:04):
think Coach Budd and the Bucks they have more luxury
because of their bench, and I think the injury to
shariche has has hurt Phoenix. Tory Craig has not been
the same since he went down with the leg injury.
I know he's played since then, but he hasn't been
the same. But look, I'm not going to count Phoenix
(20:27):
out because they've been fantastic on the road all postseason.
I think coming into the NBA Finals they were six
and two on the road, So they're certainly capable of
winning on the road, but everything has to fall into place.
They got up to a great start in Game five,
I mean, they shot the lights out. Can they do
that for forty eight minutes on the road? Daniell Ben
(20:53):
Lebron was at the game and he brought in his
own tequila. I didn't know you're allowed to do that.
He had a bottle tequila underneath his seat. If you're
the king, don't you normally travel with your own tequila.
I don't know. I would have others who traveled with
my tequila for me, But well, I'm sure they were
(21:14):
sitting in the cheap seats. They brought the tequila to
the key. Yeah, store this under your chair, your highness.
But he was there with his leisure and his agent
is reportedly dating Adele. Rich Paul is reportedly dating Adele,
and my comment on that would be good for you,
(21:37):
Rich Faul no story here, no story here, no confirmation
on that story. Dude, I have no idea who Rich
Faul is dating. Okay, all right, just these are things
that are important, and you're a will no important? Are
you kidding? Lebron bringing his own tequila and Adele sitting
(21:59):
next to Lebron on and Rich Paul. No Lebron bringing
his own tequila. That's a cute story. Rich Paul potentially
dating a Danel that's a non story. Who care? I
do you entertainment tonight? I love a doll. I want
her to be happy. Well, I'm sure Rich Paul is
(22:20):
making her very happy. If what is Damian Lillard saying
without saying it? Yep, Portland trail Blazers, you're on Dame time,
You're on the clock. I want to see some movement,
as some changing changes. You brought in a new coach.
(22:41):
You've got an injury plagued roster here. I love Chauncey Billis.
I had a lot of headbutting with him and his
Detroit pistons. I think he's going to be a fabulous coach,
but he's also unproven, so I think that's probably the
question that Dame in his camp are happy right now?
What could be on a level of success with Chauncey
(23:05):
coming in and what kind of moves can we potentially
make to make us a championship team. So I don't
think all these trade rumors, I really believe they're not
coming from Dame, but obviously his agent, his boys, they're
they're being feel traded out. They're not necessarily coming from
(23:26):
him himself, but he's having these conversations with these people. Okay,
what could Portland possibly do to make him happy? Get Kauai? Maybe?
I mean Kauai is not going to play there. I mean,
what top free agent is out there that would make
him happy? I don't know. Look, Dame is a loyal guy.
He's always talked about not wanting to team up and
(23:49):
make super teams and fight the good fight. But I
also heard Katie say that too, So I don't know.
I don't think they can get much better that. I
just don't. And if you're Lillard and you think him
forcing his way out or them respecting his body of
work and saying, you know what, you've done so much
(24:09):
for us, we'll probably get less for you, but it's
the right thing you do. I just can't see them
given up on a potential top ten player and saying, Okay,
you've done right by us for eight years. Time for
you to go. Well, it's one thing to have him,
but then are you using him correctly? It? Hey, I got,
I got Dame? What else you got? Not too much?
(24:32):
You know, we're not threatening? And then what are you
building around or with Theodore? In his defense, and he
had no control of this A lot. There's a lot
of injuries that surrounded the Trailblazers that he had zero
control of. Colin Oh, I don't blame him for any
of it. I love watching him play. I'm just saying,
(24:53):
if I'm Damian Lillard, I look around and I realize
we're not in elite team and we're not going to
be an elite team. I think what would be if
I'm Damian Lillard, I look around and I look at
the Phoenix Suns and saying they got to the NBA Finals.
No knock on Chris, Paul, Devin Booker, Mommy Williams. Great,
(25:15):
but look at you. You're talking about the role players.
I mean Cameron Paynes or Craig shop they DeAndre Ayden,
they got to the NBA Finals. You're telling me we
couldn't have done that. That probably would be more frustrating
than if I'm Lillard. But if you could, let's say
you could get let's say Ben Simmons is available and
you have to you could get somebody who's JN. Simmons
(25:38):
doesn't tip the scale for me to get me over
the edge to beat the Lakers, Utah, Phoenix, Denver, Denver. Yeah.
I don't think Ben Simmons is that kind of guy
that's gonna make Lillards say, Okay, I'm ready to go.
I mean unless he gets the jump shot between now
(25:58):
and October fifteen, I don't know. But but what if
Dame is traded and you get Ben Simmons and something else,
like you have to at some point go, let's get
younger because Dame is thirty, um, and you trade him
for Ben Simmons. No, not just Ben Simmons, well, Ben
Simmons thy ball, because you're you're gonna have to give
(26:20):
up Simmons, teeth, thy ball and maybe another big to
get Damian Lillard. But you put Lillard with Tobias Harris
and Joel Embiid Yeah who who I like that? But
you know, Darryl Moorey loves to swing for the fences,
(26:42):
the GM of the Sixers. I gotta believe somebody's gonna
swing for the fences, you know, with the Knicks. Do
with the Knicks, you have to try to pull something on,
wouldn't you? How would Damian Lillard, you know, be in
the garden with that young team. It depends on a
young team. Who are you giving up? Are you giving
up r? J? Barrett? Probably? I assume he'd probably have
(27:03):
to be in that You are you keeping Julius Randall?
It depends on the pieces. I think what New York
and the Knicks did this year was great. They made
it more appealing for free agents to potentially think, all right,
New York is not as bad as place as they've
been over the last ten plus years. I could give
(27:23):
them a shot. But there's other teams like the Philadelphia
if you're Moray in Philly, Because here's the thing, the
Brooklyn Nets are only going to get better and hopefully
knock on Wood stay healthier with Kyrie and James Harder
and obviously KD. So right now there I put them
(27:47):
as the best team in the in the East. But
if you had Lillard to Philadelphia with Joel I mean
that's a different story. That's a different story. Now talking
to Reggie Millers, a Hall of Famer, you won a
gold medal. I think he had twenty points in that
gold medal game in ninety six, something something like that.
(28:08):
I mean twenty two twenties. I mean, I'm not got
twenty six. I don't know. I can't remember who I
was getting buckets versus Yugoslavia. Yes, he had Grant, Hill,
had Hardaway, Jack, we had Hakim, We had Mitch Richmond.
How did you get a chem he was an American
citizen by that man, that's a great acquisition. We had
(28:32):
David our Sinners shot David Robinson, a Chimla Juan. In
ninety six in Atlanta, it was Karl Malone on that team,
Carlo Charles, Scottie, Miss Richmond, Grant Hardaway and Hardaway and
Gary Payton. Dang, we had a squad. We had a squaw. Okay,
(28:56):
how would that team do against the dream too? I
would have been a match up. We win by three.
I don't know. I would love to have seen it.
But because some players on ninety two were on ninety six,
(29:18):
So who you you know Barclay's got to be on
the Dream Team. You lose him and Carl on the
Dream Team and Stockton and Pippin on the next Yeah,
so we okay, we lose by fifteen a right, But
but when you play on a team like that, how
do you decide, like who is the go to guy?
(29:41):
Charles was, you know, great on the Dream Team. He
was I think the leading scorer in the Dream Team.
But how do you decide without acknowledging, Hey, this is
the go to guy or this is the guy we're
gonna have game. Okay? There were some games a lot
of teams played zone against us because they were are
afraid of Shock and Robinson and a team, so they
(30:03):
packed it in and played zone. Those were my nights
that me and Mitch we were like celebrating, Oh, you
guys gonna play the zone against us and we're pure shooters.
That's great. And there's other times when teams played man
to man and you know, we just gave it to
Carl and Shock and and Big Fella and Charles and
they just went crazy down low. So we we went
(30:26):
game by game and there was really there weren't any egos.
We were just out there to have fun and win
a gold medal and we achieved that. Did you did
you have any beefs with those guys and then they
become your teammates? Zero zero? But going into it before
being on the drink or the Olympic team, They're handed
(30:47):
me some guys who hated you. Well, they may have
hated me, but I didn't hate them. I don't know.
I got a chance to know John Stockton, you know,
because you know, you hear a lot of things. You know,
you've only played Utah twice and it was, you know,
someone of a I wouldn't say dirty player, but he's known,
(31:10):
you know him, and I love I loved what it
was all about, you know, it was all about winning
and to get a chance to know him and his family.
Same with Carl. To get a chance to know those
kind of guys was kind of cool from my end.
You lead the team in three point attempts. I'm good,
a guess, I hope. So Yeah, look at ut Polly, Polly, Yeah,
(31:31):
I did. What did I average on green team in
ninety six? I had to be one of the leading
score Yeah, you were eleven point four points per game.
Barkley was twelve point four. David Robinson was twelve, So
you threw the top scores. You were the lowest amount
of turnovers on the entire team because I was a passenger,
(31:52):
little selfish dude myself. But does Shaq say give me
the ball at any point? Yeah, Shot got upset with
me one time, and during the elevens it wasn't a
be but like I kept feeding David Robinson and a
kam right, and then Shot comes in. He's like, what, okay,
you're going what's going on? So this is why to
(32:16):
this day I tell him, this is why you took
it out on us in the finals, right, and you
know between the basis, this is why. He's like, oh,
n you know, I just wanted to showber Smith. I
was like, no, you're getting me back from ninety six
right for not feeding you the ball down low. He's like,
you know, I'm the best center out here, and then
he's going with David Robinson and Kaman last one, I'm
(32:37):
the best center out here, give me the ball, Feed
me the ball. What's it? How different was it to
play in the finals, Like the pressure to play in
an NBA finals as opposed to an Eastern Conference finals
or first round of a playoff game. Like you know,
every possession, you hear this all the time. It takes
(32:59):
a lot of its own. I had a horrendous, horrible
Game one, and to me, to this day just it
it bugs and irks me that my game won performance
to me affected our team the rest of the series.
I thought I shot one for thirteen, had like twelve
(33:23):
thirteen points. But that set the tone because I have
always been the guy if we would have if I
would have played well and we have lost, that still
would have gave the rest of the guys hope. It's
all mental. It's all mental. But why did you play?
I played great the rest of the series. I played
great the rest of the series, But to me, that
(33:44):
Game one just haunts me. It just I should have
I should have been better in that Game one, just
to put something on Kobe's in Shack's mind, and I didn't,
and that it just bugs me. Why did you play poorly?
I didn't shoot the ball. Well, you know what, maybe
(34:05):
I exhaled a little bit because we had just beaten
the Knicks. We got past our arch nemesis, Nemesis, and
I exhaled, And that's what I should have took three
or four more deeper breaths, and then like, okay, now
we're in the finals, and I exhaled for a moment
(34:25):
and it costs me in Game one again. I played
find the rest of the series. But to me, you know,
there's certain moments in certain games. I always remember more
that Game one, I just wish I could have back. Yeah,
it's twenty one years ago. Shack put up forty three
and nineteen I think, And how many free following how
(34:47):
many free throws? Was did he shoot that game? One
of the games he shot thirty nine free throws? How
many free throws? Because he must have shot at least
twenty five that game. In game one, Shack was one
six from the free throw line. That's it, yep. What
was the game when he shot like thirty nine free throws?
(35:08):
Checking he shot thirty nine free throws in the finals
A game in the finals thirty something, Wow, yeah, Paul.
Game two, Shack had forty points, twenty four rebounds. He
was eighteen to thirty nine from the free throw line
forty six percent eighteen of thirty nine thirty nine free throws.
(35:32):
He went through rick Dale Davis. We threw Austin We
threw everything on him. We're like, we're just gonna put
him on the line. We had zero and we were
treating him like yanis thirty nine thirty nine free throw? Yeah, Paul,
and we still and we still lost Reggie In that
(35:52):
entire NBA Finals, you missed one free throw, you were
forty five or forty six. It bugs me. It bugs me,
one free throw? Are you kidding me? That's unacceptable? Stables unacceptable.
What What did Shaq shoot from the line in the
(36:14):
NBA Finals for the series. He was thirty six of
ninety three. Oh my god, and we're talking about Jannis.
He missed more that week than Reggie missed in his life.
You didn't miss that many free throws in your career.
Reg Oh my god. Dominant he was. We had no
answer for Shock. It was young Kobe, so I could
(36:36):
feel I could get to Kobe a little bit. He
put on when Shack filed out of Game four and
Kobe took over. Se you're making me therapy and have
therapy on air. That's another moment, Like, I just wish
we could have back that. When Shaq filled out God
(37:03):
and we went to overtime, that was our chance. The
tightest series, up two two in Game five, that's when
I win two three two. Yeah, Game five is in
our building if we win that, which we did. We
go up three two coming home and then we got
to win one of two. It's great to talk to
you today. I hate you. Enjoy the rest of your day. Reg. Oh, yeah,
(37:32):
that's gonna be Tiper. Now on my bike ride all
I'm gonna be thinking about and going one for thirteen
in game one. Oh great, he's Reggie Miller, Hall of
Famer joining us. Thank you, Reg love you, Dan Ads.
I'm going to Iceland. We're getting well. We'll take a
(37:53):

I think you like it. Listen to All Ball with
Doug Gottlieb on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or ever
(38:38):
you get your podcast. Last Call for phone calls, What's
the Store Tomorrow Man. Reggie was legitimately upset recapping the
NBA Finals when the Pacers lost to the Lakers. That
was in two thousand and I was there covering it
(38:58):
for Sports Center, and I had gotten to know Reggie
and Mark Jackson a little bit during the postseason that year.
That's when I first formed a relationship with Reggie as
much as you can with somebody in the media and
somebody who's still playing. But we went out one night,
an off night in Indianapolis, and we had drinks and
(39:20):
cigars and Mark Jackson and Reggie teammates, and they disagreed
on everything. One love Marino, one love Montana, love holy Field,
one love Tyson, no matter it was, and whatever the
topic was, they never agreed on it. And then I
was brought in to be the deciding vote one way
or another. But yeah, I remember Reggie poor performance and
(39:45):
it wasn't really Kobe. It was shock, I mean Shack
those are incredible numbers. If he made sixty percent of
his free throws, he would average forty points a game.
Yeah po Yeah. At two thousand Lakers Pacers shack led
both teams in scoring and rebounds in all six games.
He also he averaged thirty eight points seventeen rebounds. The
(40:05):
second best guy in his team was Kobe at fifteen
points per game. Yeah wow. And you can't. We watch
him on TV, but when you stand next to him
like you'd just you can't imagine going in and trying
to score on him, or or what it's like to
have him come down the lane like he's just he's
(40:29):
bigger than what you think. And you you and you
think he's big, He's bigger than that. Uh, let's see
Nick and illinoisl squeeze in here. Nick, what's on your
mind today? Buddy? What's going on? Guys? The first time
caller six one two? Hear me? Yeah, guy, okay, uh sorry,
(40:54):
my best Paul. I'll enjoy this one. Buddy, and I
got tickets to I saw you football the play into
Kansas State in the middle of September. We're looking forward
to that. Keeping out in September twelveth for that upset
and then Dan, I just had a couple opinions on Rogers.
I don't know what his deal is. You know, they
were so close to get into Super Ball last year.
They were a bad cornerback play away, you know, minus
(41:16):
the you know, the play where they should have maybe
scored the touchdown instead of kicking the field goal. Kevin
King got burned before half against Scottie Miller, and then
after that field goal they got uh, you know, third
and long, I think, and Kevin King blew it again,
so right end of the game. So you know, outside
of losing his all Pro center, he's got the best
wide receiver in football. He gets buck dr backs, you know,
(41:39):
the things are there. So I don't know what his
deal is. Why he's got to be um, you know,
prickly in a sense of what's going on. You know,
he's so close. So I just think that that is
irks me a little bit. So all right, well, thank you, Nick.
I don't know how getting tickets to a Southern Illinois
game can be the best of the weekend. And I'll
if they're sold out a hook kept in m oh Okay.
(41:59):
I'm asking that games at Kansas State, Yeah, yeah, that
big one. Yeah. I don't understand the Rogers situation. I
just know that the best chance for him to win
a championship, a super Bowl in the next couple of
years to me is in Green Bay. You're not going
to Kansas City, ain't not going to Tampa. And you
know the real story will emerge eventually. But you know,
(42:22):
did you want to embarrass the Packers? Do you want
to make them uncomfortable? Just come out and say you
want to be traded. If that's the end game, then
just say that, get to your new team, get started,
get moving. If not, then just okay, go in swallow
your pride a little bit, knowing that you still win
in this unless there's something that we don't know, but
(42:47):
you ultimately you want to win another super Bowl, right,
But it feels like I don't want to win another
super Bowl if it means that the front office is
going to win a super Bowl like it. I'm just
trying to understand the logic. Yes, the Packers bet on
Jordan Love, they bet against you, absolutely, no question, and
then you proved everybody wrong with the MVP. Okay, now
(43:08):
move on either with the Packers or ask for a trade.
Todd would you learn today? Jake and Wisconsin says there's
no better place to be right now than the Deer
District seventeen thousand in the Arena twenty five thousand outside Seaton.
