We got some great new T shirts. Go to dan

(00:20):
of Penny's Bang biscuits. Proceeds go to some of the
charities in the pet industry that we've become familiar with.
Eight seven seven three D P show email address DP
at dan Patrick dot com, Twitter handle at DP show busy,
first hour, Busy, feels like it's a full show. Cleveland
Indians are changing their name to the Cleveland Guardians starting
(00:42):
next season. Also this in from The Austin Statesman and
Kirk Boles, who covers college football so well. Prominent Big
twelve source tells The American Statesman the Texas Oklahoma moved
to the SEC is almost done. They've been working on
this for a minimum of six months. The move could
(01:02):
become official in a week. The Texas A and M
leadership was left out of the discussions and they were
not told about this surprise. Wait what, yeah, yeah, Texas. Oh,
we forgot to tell you that, No, we email due
you didn't get the email way down on the bottom,
(01:26):
you know, and said, oh, by the way, you know,
because there's certain things that the longer it is, the
less you read. And you're just like, okay, I get it,
I get it. Get it, And he puts something super
passive aggressive like unless anyone objects, we're allowing Texas and
Oklahoma in the SEC. It's like letter K if you
started a yeah, horns down if you don't agree with
Texas SEC. Yeah. Greg Sankey's on the phone with some
(01:50):
guy at A and M, the boss of the athletic department.
All things down to college station. Yeah, you got the
new COVID rules were sent over there. Don't forget the SEC.
Tacos on. Yeah, breakfast talk goes down to Torchi. Yeah,
don't forget. We're gonna grab Okloma, texa bike. The one
night the whole world comes together the world's biggest show
in the world's biggest stage opening ceremony, Tokyo Olympics, Friday
(02:13):
at seven thirty Eastern on NBC, And after a year
long late the Summer Olympics, finally here hasn't been smooth
because COVID's impact and continued protocols make a significant mark
on these Olympics. But if Tokyo can pull this off,
it'll be a huge relief for the athletes because you
have to figure they missed out last year. You have
a really small window as an Olympic athlete in your sport,
(02:35):
and maybe it's your only shot. But now that we're going,
some of the games have already started, and you know,
obviously Simone Biles, Katie Ledecki household names the basketball players.
The beauty of the Olympics is there's always two, three, four,
five athletes that you didn't know about, but you fall
in love with their story. Hopefully the athletes remain healthy
(02:57):
in the games deliver that special kind of Olympic madge
that we've all come to expect. Whole question there, fritzed. Okay,
we went with what niche sport would you like to
win Golden Right now? Fencing is at thirty seven percent,
water polo twenty five, badminton and judo and other battling
about at twelve and a half percent of each. Milwaukee
(03:19):
box a successful parade and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers get
their Super Bowl rings. But I keep saying that you
got to I'll give you the super Bowl ring. How
about I give you something you can actually wear in,
you know, in public. But everybody tries to top everybody
every year, and it just looks like it's costume jewelry
after a while. I mean, they're ugly and I'm sure
(03:41):
valuable for a variety of reasons. But you know, when
you see the real old guard NFL Hall of Famers
and they've got their super Bowl rings, they can wear
them out, it looks like it's a high school ring
that you would get or a college ring. We're going
to talk some basketball and a little bit about what
(04:02):
the Lakers are going to do in the offseason, because
there's been some news there. Also, Golden State, I think
is a tricky team to keep an eye on. They
want to make some moves. I think they're really interested
in Bradley Beale, whether they get him or not. But
also the Lakers, who are you bringing in to take
Dennis Shrewder's place and who's available? It feels like everybody's
available except for Lebron and Anthony Davis. Do you bring
(04:24):
in Russells Russell Westbrook, do you bring in Kyle Lowry.
Do you bring in Mike Conley like Malcolm Brogden. You know,
there's a variety of Chris paul is he available? Like
what is real and what is not? So we'll talk
some basketball. Coming up is Tom Palico with US Sarah
Pauli any minutes. Okay. Tom Placeo does a great job
(04:47):
covering the NFL for the NFL Network and had some
details on what's going on in the NFL with the
COVID protocols, the NFL dropping the new rules for vaccinations
and forfeits there because there's no real wiggle room to
make up a game. Like last year you had eight
games that were moved, no games were canceled. But now
(05:10):
the NFL is saying, hey, if you don't want to
get vaccinated and your team is forced to forfeit, you
don't get paid and the team you're playing against doesn't
get paid. This is about the bottom line with the NFL.
And I said it in the first hour. You want
to make it red versus blue, Republican versus Democrat. It's
(05:35):
not red and blue, it's green. It's just protect your
best interest. If you're a player, do whatever you need
to do. You get your paycheck, because the NFL is
not concerned about your safety other than what's it mean
for their bottom line, and that is to be able
to fill up these stadiums. And the NFL is going
to move on with or without you. And if you
(05:56):
don't want to get the vaccine, I know people, there's
people in my family tree that they have not received
the vaccine. They don't want the vaccine, but if they
come to my house, there's certain things that I asked
them to do. That's all. You may not want to
protect you as much as I want you to protect
me and my family if you come in the same
thing I said in the first hour about the dants.
(06:18):
If they didn't want to get vaccinated, then it's up
to them. There's a different policy for them when they
come into the man Cave or they're going to have
to do the show from home. Those are things that
I asked them to do. I'm running my business. It's
the same with the NFL. They're running a business. Tom Pellicero,
joining us on loan from the NFL Network, explain the
(06:39):
NFL memo that came out yesterday. Tom Well, then the
headline item is, of course that the NFL is now
telling clubs in no uncertain terms that if any game
is canceled and cannot be made up within the regularly
scheduled eighteen game season and it involves an outbreak among
them unvaccinated players, than the team that has the outbreak
(07:05):
is going to forfeit. They are going to take a
loss in terms of playoff seating. They're also can be
responsible for reimbursing costs to the other team, paying their
visiting team share pool, and potentially, depending if protocols were violated,
subject to additional discipline. You know. Last year, of course,
there were a couple of significant outbreaks, one in Tennessee
(07:27):
one in Baltimore. The league grand probes on those, but
at no point was a forfeit ever considered. Yet some
of the same ramifications, the players on neither team would
get paid if a game were canceled. The NFL made
a bunch of adjustments, moved some things around. They were
able to play all two hundred and fifty six games
in the seventeen week season, but they also always held
out the possibility they could use and add a week
(07:50):
eighteen to make up any games. In this memo, it
makes very clear in bold faced type, We do not
anticipate adding a nineteenth week to the season, and even
goes so far as to say that if the team
is not ready to play when they are scheduled to
play under the constitution and by laws, that is conduct
detrimental and the commissioner could take action against a club
(08:14):
if they are not able to play a game, and
specifically if it is because they had unvaccinated individuals who
tested positive and cause an outbreak. What role is the
NFL Players Association played. The NFL and the NFLPA have
negotiated all the protocols to this point, including the fact
(08:35):
that players on neither team would get paid in terms
of team discipline. In terms of the forfeit and the loss,
those are league decisions that they make unilaterally because that
would not involve the players, so the players conversation does
not change. But in terms of all the protocols, the
differences between vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, mask wearing, the daily
(08:58):
testing versus testing every two weeks, the significant travel restrictions,
the NFLPA has jointly negotiating all of those, and in fact,
the union sent a memo to all players yesterday that
once again reiterated what is really the top line out
of them in all of this that the union, it's
medical experts, say that you have tested vaccines that are effective.
(09:19):
Even though they have maintained that it's every player's individual
choice in the league is not mandating it. It's a
very strong message from the union and the league. They're
upwards a seventy eight percent of players within the league
that have at least one vaccine shot, and they are
aiming to get as many people vaccinated as possible before
we get to September. Yeah, I wonder about you know,
you talk about individual rights, and some of these players
(09:40):
have brought this up. So what does a team do
to accommodate, for the lack of a better word, somebody
like DeAndre Hopkins or Cole Beasley who says I don't
want to get vaccinated, but I still want to play. Well,
they're allowed to do that because the vaccine is not
mandated for the players. But every team is going to
be individually having to ord out how they're arranging their
(10:01):
locker room. You know, we've seen in other sports who
whether it's the Yankees outbreak among vaccinated individuals, whether it's
Olympic athletes. You've got vaccinated people who are testing positive
and they're being pulled out of competition. Now. The NFL
memo also yesterday made reference to the fact that vaccinated
individuals potentially can return to play sooner. They only need
(10:22):
to have two If they're asymptomatic, they would need to
have two negative tests twenty four hours apart, and then
they can return. There's no mandatory ten day waiting period.
But of course, if you test positive and it's a
real positive, you're probably going to test positive for a while.
But still, I've talked to medical officials with teams who
have I wouldn't call them concerns, but certainly questions about
(10:44):
as you see the delta variant, as you see other
variants of this fires, as you see case numbers double
around the country every couple of weeks. Right now, you
know the place we're in in late July, is that
going to be significantly better than where we might be
in September if the case numbers continue to rise? And
if so, do you roll back those restrictions? Because I
can tell you this, Dan, when you talk about I've
(11:06):
talked to many, whether it's players, coaches, agents for players,
front office people. There's a lot of people who had
some level of hesitancy and did not want to take
the vaccine, and in a lot of cases, people ended
up getting it because they don't want their lives to
be like last year. They want to be able to
get back to living like normal. In the cases of
coaches on front office people, they can't even be around
the team. Really, there's major restrictions unless you get an
(11:29):
exemption if you do not get vaccinated. So now all
of a sudden, if the league comes back and says, actually,
you are going to have mass Actually we are still
going to have separated travel. Actually the SANA is going
to close again, that would be a really hard sell.
And so the NFL for the moment is just continuing
to emphasize what they did yesterday, which is just here's
(11:49):
all the reasons again that it is going to be
in the best interest of you, your team, and the
league if you get vaccinated. I'm federally mandated to ask
you about Aaron Rodgers if you think he'll show up,
what's the end game here? The one thing that I've
heard consistently dan from people who know Aaron Rodgers is
everyone believes that he has and has had a plan,
(12:11):
and that he has not communicated that plan to the
powers to be. The packers have not been told anything
about whether or not he is going to show up.
There are certain levers that he potentially could pull between.
He could show up on time. He could decide to
hold out five days into Camp E two hundred and
fifty thousand dollars in fines, and then show up day
six before they can go after his bonus money. He
(12:34):
could choose to temporarily retire. He could choose to pull
what is sometimes called a hold in, where you show
up but basically don't practice. But this collective bargaining agreement
looks upon that a little bit more harshly in terms
of there's a material failure to perform your duties, then
you know there's additional discipline that can come into play,
(12:54):
so you know, you still have a lot of moving parts.
The packers have made clear public and privately for months
that they are not trading Aaron Rodgers. I am not
under the impression, based upon what I know, that that
has changed at all. Now is there any chance that
it would change if you got into mid August or
(13:15):
September or October toward the trade deadline and Aaron Rodgers
is still not there. That's hypothetical as of now, but
the Packers absolutely want Aaron Rodgers back. They've stood at
the ready. Whether it's the contract that we reported back
in March and April that they had tried to negotiate
and that they had not been able to strike a deal,
whether it's other potential changes in the organization. They're basically saying,
(13:36):
tell us what you need to make this work, and
to this point, Aaron Rodgers hasn't really done that. I
know you had a busy morning. Thank you for making
some time for us. Tom, Thank you, and have a
great weekend anytime, Dan, you too. That's Tom Pealicero, NFL
Network reporter. You know the Aaron Rodgers situation. He has
a plan, but he's not telling anybody. People don't realize
(14:04):
what Tom Brady did last year and what it meant
to other quarterbacks, and he's continuing to do it. He
had the entire Super Bowl roster coming back. That doesn't happen.
He got everybody back. This is where Russell Wilson sat
there at the Super Bowl and looked out there and went,
(14:26):
I'll be like, what am I doing. Tom Brady is
out there playing a Super Bowl and he just left
New England and he got an input on the roster.
Deshaun Watson tried to do it, and then he got
in trouble. He was trying to force a trade, saying
I want out of here these quarterbacks, and Aaron Rodgers
(14:47):
is looking at Tom Brady saying, why can't I do that?
And he can question, is how accommodating the Packers going
to be? Will they restructure his contract act that Aaron
Rodgers can somehow get out next year and then go
to a team and do what Tom Brady did. I mean,
(15:09):
that's really that's what's happening here, and it's happening with
these other quarterbacks who want to have a say. All
Russell Wilson wanted was a seat at the table when
he joined us in February after the Super Bowl. He
just wanted them to listen to him. Rogers, just listen
to me, don't bail on me, and don't draft a quarterback.
(15:31):
Stay with me. And Tom Brady goes to Tampa and
is having the time of his life, and these quarterbacks
are looking at that with envy, and so is Aaron Rodgers.
We'll take a break, we'll talk to some NBA. What
are the Lakers doing in the off season? Is there
a real move that they can make? And we'll get
(15:52):
to phone calls here. I know the whole college football
scenario that we played out for you in the first hour.
If you miss anything, you can always go to the
podcast and listen. But I think we're headed towards an
NFL type format in college football, that maybe you have
the top forty schools and you let everybody else sort
(16:13):
of fend for themselves. I just I think we're headed
in that direction. But we'll take a break here, we'll
come back and I will get to the phone calls.
It's seventeen after the hour here on the Dan Patrick Show.
I love talking to the people from stifle because they
make you feel smarter. A lot of things have happened
in the last year, and you're not sure what you're doing.

on the Peacock app. Them busy day. We're only halfway
through and it's a meat Friday, by the way. How
about this for Meat Friday on the Tragger right now?
Shrimp tacos, grilled chicken tacos, flank state tacos. Once again,
(18:00):
who has it better than us. No, we'll get to
more phone calls coming up. Bringing Mark Spears, senior NBA
writer for The Undefeated, How jealous are you with meat Friday? There? Mark? Man,
I got a trigger. I've got a trigger. Okay, I'm
mo minute up tonight. Now. You inspired me to get
(18:22):
some steaks? All right? Is that your go to on
the trigger? Yeah? I'm still I gotta get past novice status.
Uh my wife is talking bad about me, like not
paying attention to the app as well as I need
to and the thermometer. Would you like to talk to
my advisor, my trigger advisor, because I'd be willing to
(18:43):
do that for you. Yes, Okay, I will. This is
with all seriousness, Yes, absolutely. I don't joke when it
comes to barbecue. No. Now, it depends on how good
you are in this segment. If you're good, then I'm
going to give you my advisor's number. Okay, and no pressure, Mark, Okay,
oh man, oh man. All right, here we go. We're
(19:05):
gonna play a game. Can I say it's a it's
a pleasure to talk to you man. You're a legend
in this business, so it's a pleasure. Thank you, Mark.
I did I did see your Michael Jordan's story, and
I always tell my Jordan's story of how competitive he is.
And after he hit the shot in Utah, we thought
his career was over. He ended on a championship jumper,
(19:29):
and we were ready to go on Sports Center and
I'm going to interview him and he comes in. He's
drenched in champagne, his jerseys out, basketball in his arm.
Cuban Cigar does the interview and he gets up and
I don't know what to say because I think this
is the last time he's going to play a game.
So I said, man, it's a shame year retiring. And
(19:49):
he turns. He goes, why's that. I said, I know,
I'd like a piece of you. He goes, what the
and sid stand up? So I'm in my suit and tie.
So I got Phil Jackson ready to go on Sports
Center with me. We just went to commercial break stand up,
so I stood up. He goes, how the bleep would
you guard me? So I put my arm in his
(20:11):
back like a forearm bar, and he goes, I would,
and then he just there are a lot of m
efforts in there, and then he walked out the door
and I sat down I would what just happened? What
just happened? And Phil Jackson goes, you see what I
dealt with all the time? Tell your Michael Jordan's story. Well,
(20:31):
it's actually a story I got from mactar Nji Nick Scout,
former North Carolina player, and you know, as you know,
Dean Smith always had former players come in. So one
day Michael Jordan came in just to visit with the players.
And he goes by and Dean has him shake all
the guy's hands and hey, what's your name? Oh, Manton Jamison,
(20:51):
Nice to meet you. Hey, what's your name? I'm Vince Carter,
Nice to meet you. Well, Mac Dar's crazy man. He
goes to the end of the line and Jordan comes
up to me and and goes, hey, what's your name. He
is like mactar Engin, what's your name, Michael? Nice to
meet you, Michael. And Michael goes, well, um, where are
(21:12):
you from? Synegal Well they must not have much basketball
and synegalf you don't know who I am. And he goes, yeah, yeah,
nice to meet you. But and a Kim Elijah One
is the greatest player of all time. By the way,
Jordan gets pissed off runs into the back, puts on
some practice gear, comes out. He tells Dean Smith, give
me your walk on the guys at the end of
(21:33):
your bench, I'm playing your starters. So he proceeds to
play with like Serge Wicker and some other guys I
don't remember, and apparently they played. Serge Wicker looked like
a number one pick in the draft next to Jordan, right,
and they're killing Vince Carter. Vince's pissed at Mac because
he has to guard them, right, but Jordan's trying to
dunk on Mac doesn't doesn't. Mac gets out of the way.
(21:56):
Jordan basically shows those Mactar and everybody else who he is.
Casey didn't know, and he's in his prime with the
Bulls at the time. And so years later, Anton Jamison
had a day off with the Wizards. He goes to
Miami for Super Bowl weekend and Mactars with him so
trying to get in this club, and Jordan comes out
(22:18):
from the rooftop and they basically like, Mike, Mike, Mike,
can you let us in? Can you let us in?
And Jordan yells down to Mactar, Oh, now you remember
my name, Africa, Why don't you go tell a keen
to help you get in and walks back in. So
I heard Jamison was mad at Backtar for getting that
(22:39):
story out, but this is hoop stories and undefeated. We
got a couple of their cart animated, which I think
makes it funnier. And last one was on James Harden's
bodyguard getting beat up in San Francisco and hopefully if keim,
we'll get behind it and we'll have more soon. Man,
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, that was great. How
about we played in the blank? Okay, all right? The
(23:02):
Greek freak is the blank player in the world. He's
the best now, he's the best. But I also thought,
I kind of think of your finals MVP, you own
that that title for the summer, unless no, it's his
title for the summer. He bles everything. That's just how
(23:25):
I feel about it. I mean, Kevin Durant's the best
in the world. To me, I'd still take him over anybody.
But I was impressed with Janniss Janni's finally getting out
of his own way and going inside. I thought shooting
the threes is certainly not his game, being easy to
(23:46):
guard by taking those long steps and letting people jump
in front of him. He did what my coach always
told me to do in college in high school, get
your button the post. And once he got his button
the post man, he dominated. There's nothing they could do.
He doesn't score fifty if he's shooting jumpers. No, and
we've bought into this game plan, and that's what you
(24:06):
have to do. And I said the same thing on
the show. I said, nobody can guard him down low,
and if you miss your first shot, you'll get your
second shot. They dominated on the offensive glass. It was like,
I'm not going to play into your strategy. You got
to play into my strategy. And yeah, and that's why
I mean he was. He was exceptional for a guy
(24:26):
who doesn't even go to move. He certainly scoring Dan.
He neutralized his superpowered by shooting jumper. Yes, you know.
And so I think this series was bad for the
analytic people. You had Janni scoring in the post. Obviously,
Middleton and Chris Paul and Booker had a lot of
mid range jumpers. Um, so you can't tell me that
(24:50):
scoring in the post and making mid range jumpers is
not valuable on this level anymore. We're talking to Mark
Spears senior NBA writer for The Undefeated. Um, you had
a lot of chatter about what the Lakers could do
in the offseason. Could do, Yes, sir, Um, let's let's
look at how about what should they do? And then
(25:11):
if it's different from what they will do, what should
they do? Well, what they should do is find a
veteran point guard. You know they got this window now
that's that's not that wide open. Um. Obviously, health I
think ruined everything for them this year. They could have
potentially repeated. But they're looking for a veteran point guard
(25:32):
and they need to. I've heard that Russell Westbrook's on
that list. I've heard that Chris Paul is on that list.
Obviously it's not easy. It's just making some trade. But
they do have some assets. You know, Dennis Schroeder could
do assigning trade. Um, Kyle Kuzma is an interesting young player.
I've seen enough of and I think you've seen enough
of Taylor Horton Tucker where are I think what the
(25:55):
kids like? Twenty and he's a bucket geter man. So
they have some pieces that they could move. It's not
trade in the ad or Lebron, but Um, i'd be
intrigued to see if Washington, especially if Bill wants to go,
could be interested in moving Russell back home. Chris, Chris
(26:16):
pauls is more complicated. Yeah, I don't like Russell going.
His tempo is different than than Lebron, so that that
would concern me, Um Chris Paul, Yeah, but I could
like Kyle Lowry makes maybe a little more sense than
than lets complicated. Yeah, exactly, Um, Malcolm Brogden, Mike Conley,
(26:38):
maybe I don't know. Yeah, but it just feels like
it's going to be tricky, like what it's all said
and done. What do you think the Lakers look like
next season? It's Kyle Kuzman there, Shrewder there, No, no,
Shrewder already took Lakers off as it's a gram page. Man,
he's letting you go. I think for Kyle Man and
(27:01):
I'm not speaking for Kyle, but I think he needs
to get out of that Lakers shadow. The same way
Brandon Ingram flourished afterwards, the same way Julius random, Jordan
Clarkson like, they all flourished after they left. But I
think they like it. I think Kyle Kuzma likes being
a Laker, even though being a Laker is not the
(27:21):
best thing for his career. Does that make sense? I
think he likes it off the court, yeah, but he
seems to play much better when he's a starter. So
you know, it's interesting that you meant mentioned that Kyle
Lowry thing. Um, If Kyle says I want to be
a Laker, I think Massa Jerry respects him and helps
him make that happen. And the one thing that helps
(27:43):
the Raptors is, Hey, they do have some assets that
we could get back to help our team, and you know,
not lose Kyle for nothing. Let me get your Damian
Lillard prediction. Who man, I know him since he came
into the league. I was at that famous workout and
(28:05):
at Merrick College in Oakland as the greatest workout I've
ever seen. He told me that he's loyal, but not
to a fault, and I think the loyalty is run out.
I think there's certainly a lot of pressure on the
Blazers to make something happen, to make it attractive going
into next season. But what can they do. They don't
have a lot of assets. They don't have much they
(28:26):
could trade. I mean, you could only get so much
for CJ. McCollum. The team pretty much needs to overhaul.
Their bigs are always hurt. I don't know if they
could do enough in time, so after this Olympic experience
is not going to help the Blazers. He's next to
k D. He's next to like Draymond. He's next to
(28:47):
guys like, hey, why don't you come play here? Why
don't you you know, let me see what I could do.
So I'm really nervous for the Blazers right now. But
perhaps what Yannis did might give him another breath. But
he basically told them, you gotta make some moves, man, Like,
I'm not coming back with this team. The Warriors are
(29:08):
intriguing for me because it feels like they want to
do something now. I thought they were compete for the
title if everybody was healthy this last year, right, I
thought that that that much of that roster. But it
just feels like, can they package some players some picks?
Can they can they take a big swing here in
(29:29):
the season. I'm I'm actually not going to go to
the draft because the world is crazy right now. I
live in the Bay, but I am going to go
to the Warriors media availability because to your point, I
think they're gonna do something, and I think they might
have the blockbuster move. They have seven, they have fourteen,
They Wiggins had a solid season wise. Man, I think
(29:51):
it's gonna be special. Um. I saw enough from them
that I think, especially when you see what happened with
eight and you gotta be patient with Biggs. I think
they're fine if they leave their team alone, Like Clay
is going to be back, Wiseman is going to be better.
I don't know that they really need to make a
blockbuster move. In fact, I would just be patient and
(30:12):
perhaps wait into mid season. But what if somebody dangles Bill?
What if the Blazers like, hey, what about Dame for
some of that young But they they have assets to
make a move, and I'm sure that they're having a
lot of conversations. If there is a team that's going
to make a move. I put them on the list,
and I put Washington on the list too. Before I
(30:34):
let you go, I know you wrote a column on
an LSU star Cameron Thomas. It's not just about him
being a top NBA draft pick. It's it's more about
his mom and the role that she's played and making
him become that kind of man. Yeah, no, Leslie Thomas basically,
how many moms you know, like took rebounds, yells at
(30:57):
her son for making free throw not making free throws
because they're free. And so from the beginning, when he
was two years old, she groomed him into being the star.
And there aren't NBA teams that wonder it's Cameron Thomas
average twenty three points, who who was a first team
All SEC who led off freshman scoring. Is mom gonna
get in the way? Well? I think in this story
(31:18):
you see that mom is actually pushing them to the
next level and hip. Yeah. She was in the army
for four years. Will Wade said is the most disciplined
freshman he's ever had. The coach at LSU, he said,
this kid shows up twenty minutes early to practice, Like
what freshman does that. So I think his mom is
(31:39):
instilled some army values that, along with his scorn ability,
is going to make him a very intriguing prospect. On Thursday,
Fritzie's gonna reach out to you and I'm gonna put you.
So I got it. I think by all accounts, I
passed the test. Let's vote. Let's vote if Spears gets
to talk to our barbecue advisor, Chad at Trigger Paulie.
(32:01):
He nailed the Jordan's story right to the point. Okay, Fritzie, absolutely, Okay,
Seaton Crush, get them in the number, all right. I
was gonna say no, but you know it's yeah. Uh
my vote counts is too. Just let you know, Mark, Um, Yeah,
but I still but I'll still pay. I know you did.
You did so well. I'm lsu sandalse statement. I think
(32:23):
I still bad. Wow, I'm gonna I'm gonna have Fritzie
reach out to our our trigger advisor. He's actually a
champion griller and uh he'd be more than happy to
help you in giving you some advice. And made my
day brother. I have a great weekend, Mark, thanks for
joining us. Plague Mark Smears, senior NBA rider for The Undefeated.
(32:45):
That's good stuff. Take a break. Phone calls are next
coming up top of the hour. We'll get more details
on Oklahoma and Texas joining the SEC. Also Brady Quinn,
former Notre Dame star working for Fox. Brady will talk
to us as well. Back after this and The Dan
Patrick Show. Thanks for listening to The Dan Patrick Show podcast.
(33:05):

I'm Doug Gottlieb. The podcast is called All Ball. We
usually talk all basketball all the time, but it's more
(33:25):
about the stories about what made these people love their
sport and all the interesting interactions along the way. We
talked to coaches, we talked to players, We tell you stories.
You download it, you listen to it. I think you
like it. Listen to All Ball with Doug Gotlieb on
the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or ever you get your podcast.
(33:48):
Oh you'll never guess what we were doing. During the
commercial break. We were looking at Super Bowl rings, every
one of them from back when the Packers won the
first Super Bowl. Now see the Packers look like those
are high school rings, but you could wear that. I
remember seeing Jerry Kramer when he had his Super Bowl
ring on the Hall of Fame lineman and it just
(34:09):
was it was classy. Who do you think started the
cow Did the Cowboys go a little bigger? Is that? When?
Is that when it started? Paul? Yeah, the Cowboys, I
think won Super Bowl six, it got a little flashy
with the diamonds, but then it kind of went back
a little bit and they were generally normal. The Oakland Raiders,
theirs was a little flashy, but then around like um
(34:32):
the Broncos when they won their two Super Bowls back
to back, they became like a box almost like it
felt like a presentation, not a ring. Yeah, it felt
like an ornament. Yeah. I think that they should come
up with two rings. Not that the owners are gonna
want to do this, but you have one that you
could wear socially. You should see the eighty five bear
Super Bowl ring. Oh, I can't look directly at it. Oh.
(34:56):
I mentioned on occasion that we're in nearly four hundred
cities or down to America cities like uh des Moines
fourteen sixty k x n O Desmone. We got it.
Thank god you were there with me on that flight, Paulie.
It was a flight to Chicago, and the flight attendant
she was lovely, she was young, but she she had
(35:20):
she got she got on the loudspeaker and she was,
you know, kind of in a and uh when we
stop in Chicago and we have a briefly over and
then we will be headed towards des Monee. We went
crazy in the back. You're up front. I was in
the back. I went, oh my god, des mone and
(35:42):
then we'll be going to des Monee. Also a great
affiliate in Portland. One or two point nine seven fifty
the game the ticket seven sixty in San Antonio. Thank
you for your support. We have a theory that Cleveland
Indians are changing their nickname. They are going to be
(36:04):
the Cleveland Guardians. Polly showed me the logo and it
looks really similar to the Indians, and in just the wording,
the lettering, the color, the font looks looks really similar Guardians.
(36:26):
You're missing the Indians. Guardians just feels like they're trying
to keep it as close as possible to what they
once were. Yeah, point yeah. If you look at the logos,
people are putting them side by side on the Internet,
and there's very little change in the font, the look,
the color. They still use the baseball with the stitching
in one of the logos. The Cleveland font is very
(36:49):
similar to the Indians font they were using on the
jerseys the past few years. So it's it's as subtle
as it could be while technically being away from the
offensive list. Yeah, that was an hour ago that we
got word that they were changing their nickname, and then
we had the story about we're probably a week away
from the official announcement that Texas and Oklahoma are going
(37:11):
to the SEC. And we'll talk to one of the
reporters on this story, Kurt Bowles, who had the news
with the American Statesman earlier today about this move that
it's going to happen and the fact that the SEC
didn't let Texas, A and M in on this information
I find fascinating. So Kurt will join us coming up
(37:31):
top of the hour. Some phone calls here, people have
been on hold for a while. Steve in Virginia. Steve,
thanks for holding. What's on your mind today? Yeah, so
I was wondering if you think if they do split
it up there, do you think that they will split
it up just in football and do it like Notre
Dame is and just do it football wise, or where
they split up all the sports. I don't know that, Steve,
(37:52):
And once again I'm just giving you an educated guess
that if you do this for football, can you what
do you do with your other sports. You know, there's
a lot of big time basketball programs. What happens and
I'm not sure. I just know that football is probably
going to it's going to secede from the NCIA and
(38:16):
it's going to stand alone. It just makes the most sense.
You just you're going to restructure college football. I truly
believe that that's what's going to happen. Brad in North Carolina, Hi,
Brad Heyd Yesterday you have mentioned that if you were
Clemson and Clemson shoes, you'd want to stand ACC as
(38:36):
long as possible. And I'm of that opinion because there's
generally one or two French contenders. But also something that
sparked my curiosity is the ACC sign what is known
as a grant of rights about two or three years
ago with the formation of the ACC network, and each
member institution is locked in for a twenty year period
(38:57):
and it would be financially untenable for them to leave
the conference. So I guess my question to you is
is this moving so quickly and the money growing so
fast that what would have been untenable two years ago
be certainly tenable for a Clemson, say next year. There's
always a loophole of buy out. You know, we talk
(39:19):
about this where you have somebody's contract, you go, you
can't move that contract, and then that contract gets moved somehow,
some way it works. But I don't know. If I'm Clemson,
I want to I want to stay in the ACC.
Like I'm guaranteed playing for a championship every year. I'm
in the playoffs every year, guaranteed. I mean, I'm surprised
that Oklahoma would want to join the SEC, just from
(39:43):
the outside looking in, because Oklahoma is guaranteed of playing.
If you expand this to twelve teams. Clemson's there every year.
I mean, you don't even have to expand it. Oklahoma
is there. Notre Dame is there, Ohio State is there.
There's certain schools you're just going to plug in every
single year. They're going to be there. I think the
relegation aspect of this is what would make this really
(40:06):
even more interesting. You have the let's say you have
forty schools and you have your scheduling launch party. Now
you know, Ohio State may open up with USC and
then the Ohio States next game is Notre Dame and
then Alabama is playing and you know, throw out at
(40:27):
a school Alabama's playing in Oklahoma. You're going to get
these matchups because that's what you have in the NFL.
You're going to have your divisions. You'll have four divisions
around the country. You'll have ten teams, you have networks
will work on the schedule. Then at the end of
the year, you're going to have the relegation part of this,
(40:48):
where you have the top forty schools ranked regular season ranked. Now,
all of a sudden, you get to those teams that
you know, maybe you're maybe you're deciding who stays in
the top forty. I mean that, and I know it
may sound crazy, but there are a lot of things
(41:09):
that sounded crazy, and then all of a sudden it
happens and you go, I'll be damned. Let's see Caleb
in Oklahoma. Hey, Caleb, and you couldn't be more right
about this is all for the money. And I know
you don't think, oh you should jump, but I am
excited to have the sec comes through Norman. I run
a small business here. I cannot wait for those excited
Southerners to show up with their fistful of dollars ready
(41:31):
for mimosas and poached eggs. I'm gonna sell them. I'm
gonna clean up. And I was just curious day and
when need you sell out? When did I sell out? Yes, sir,
I guess it's ongoing, Caleb. I don't know if I
sold out. I left ESPN. Caleb, what's the opposite of
selling out? You went to your attic? Yeah. I was
(41:52):
doing the show for a couple of years in my attic, Caleb.
We took pay cuts, Caleb, just sell out. Yeah, you
and your fancy attic. Yeah, I know you're high flutant attic. Yeah.
It was right after he hit rock Bottom. That's sold out.
So yeah, it was like, uh man, I think people
(42:15):
see this now they're like Okay. It's like people go, hey,
I would have worked for you. I go, no, you
wouldn't have. I would have told you not to work
for me. We were in my attic. We had to
assemble our chairs in the backyard. Do you remember that
we're we got him and we're like, we're getting new
chairs having him up that damned staircase. I'll tell you that,
(42:38):
you got some really nice chairs and they came in
a box we opened up like, oh, assembly required, Yeah, Caleb.
At ESPN, remember we never had to assemble our destiny
that once. Yeah I didn't. Good times, thank you. I'd
like Caleb to walk into work today and say, hey,
you know what I think we're doing too well. Yeah,
let's dial it back. Yeah, Hey, let's everybody come to
(42:59):
my kitchen home and then we'll start there. Caleb, I
would love to sell out. I can't. I've been trying
for fourteen damn years. I know. Yes, I just love
leading up to the show. As you can hear your
wife in the morning, she's yung having breakfast, is trying
to get the kids out to school, but behind the
scene stuff from downstairs, Caleb. Final hour coming up on
(43:21):
this Meet Friday, Kurt Bowles, who's got some information on
Oklahoma and Texas joining the SEC, and Brady Quinn Box
college football anists will stop by as well. Caleb,
