iHeartRadio. Fox Sports Radio. Play of the Day.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Stat of the day poll question, all of that forthcoming.
But the big news now, it might not sound like
big news, but it struck me as a little news ish.
And that's the Lakers with Lebron James. He opts in,
and I don't know if there was any real mystery
that would he not opt in, would he become a

(01:28):
free agent? Does he want to go someplace else? Keep
in mind what he said on his podcast with Steve
Nash that it's really not about rings if you're going
to look at somebody's legacy or their greatness. And I
thought it was his way passive aggressively saying, hey, I'm
not going to catch Michael Jordan, but that doesn't mean
I'm not better than Michael Jordan. It was a passive

(01:51):
aggressive comment. And if they counted the passive aggressive assist
for Lebron James, he'd probably have about five under more
assist on his total. Very passive aggressive, very good at
being passive aggressive. But his agent, Rich Paul said that
Lebron knows the Lakers are building for the future, but

(02:12):
he also wants to compete for championships. This is Rich
Paul telling the Athletic and the Mothership goes on to say,
we understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for
the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for
Lebron at this stage in his life and career. He
wants to make every season he has left count and

(02:33):
the Lakers understand them, and they're supportive and they want
what's best for him. We're very appreciative of the partnership
we've had for eight years with Genie Buss, Rob Polenka,
and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career. Okay,
this is all about Luka Doncic. This is his team now.

(02:53):
It's official, Lebron, hey got some nice parting gifts. I
hope you enjoy a farewell tour. Aaron Rodgers going to
have farewell tours. You can play one more season with
your son here. But this is about the Lakers, not
wanting to do something drastic just for now. This is
about building the future. Is Austin Reeve's going to stay there.

(03:15):
He turned down a contract extension. He's going to make
more money, but this will be the final year and
they're going to have to pay more money, and rightfully so,
I mean, he's been a bargain, a very good player.
Luca wants to have a big man. Who are you
going to get? And the first thing I thought of
is Lebron's staying and look, he's still maybe a top

(03:36):
ten player, certainly top fifteen player. But they want to
be in the sweepstakes for Jannis. That's what struck me
here is, Hey, Milwaukee has traded a big man to
Los Angeles before and it worked out really well for
the Lakers. Can they get Yannis? Would they be involved
in that picture? When you clear Lebron's salary fifty plus

(03:59):
million off the books? And I think that's what this
is all about. It's Luca's team. Lebron is there and
there's going to be a farewell tour. And you know,
for everybody who said, wait a minute, I've thought Lebron's
the GM. Maybe he was the GM five or six
years ago, seven years ago, not the GM. Now, now,

(04:20):
what are you going to do? Can you do something?
And you're still going to be competitive? I mean you
can win upwards of fifty five games this year, I think.
But they right now, the Lakers have the fifth best
odds to win the title according to DraftKings. To win
the Western Conference, they're up there, but Houston's really good. Okay,

(04:41):
see just won a title, So you got to start there.
You're not on their level, at least not right now,
because those teams are young and still hungry and they're deep.
The Lakers are not. But that doesn't mean with Luca.
We've seen Luca take a team to the NBA Finals.
Now you do, you have Lebron and Reeves, you do

(05:02):
have some pieces there. The question is sort of what
is reality? And in Los Angeles Hollywood, you don't always
deal in reality. Sometimes you're like in La La Land,
seet's see what I did? Okay, you guys, hey, come
on show started to La La Land, Thank you, thank you,

(05:23):
thank you. See and win totals not available yet of
what the Lakers win total prop bet would be, but
you know, probably a fifty two to fifty three win team.
But you know they bowed out against Minnesota early against
a younger team. Once again, you got a factor in
Minnesota as well because they're still a formidable team. But

(05:47):
it just struck me, as hey, what about Lebron? And
it felt like the Lakers were saying, yeah, yeah, we're
gonna pay him that money and keep his son on
the roster. And but this is Luca's team, and now
what we do will be to incorporate what we think
will help Luca in the future. This is about the future.
It's not about now. Got to keep Lebron. He wants

(06:10):
to stay in La all the business opportunities he has,
and you have your son there. But it feels like
this is the last year Lebron plays for the Lakers.
Does he play another year someplace else? That's always the possibility.

Speaker 4 (06:28):
Yes, Buony, this reminds you of SEC football when you
have a really good senior quarterback, but you have a
five star recruit coming in and the five star recruit
is wagging the dog like Clemson back in the day.
I saw the quote by Rich Paul, I understood it. Obviously,
you want to do as much as you can in
the near future to build for the near future. But
the Lakers five months ago, yesterday or tomorrow, they traded

(06:51):
for Luka Dacic, which establishes their current and future. In
one of the great swindles in recent basketball history. It's
like they forgot about this.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Yeah, that was building for the future, but it was
helping now by getting one of the top five players
in the world. But I don't know if Lebron sees
it that way. He knows it's Luca's team. Why make
this public? Can you make it public to put pressure
on the front office to do something here, or if

(07:22):
the team's not that good, we told you to do something.
I'm just kind of surprised that rich Paul was going
to say this, you know publicly, Yes, Marmon.

Speaker 5 (07:33):
Rich Paul's treating the Lakers like they're the hornets, Like,
are you guys trying to compete? They're the Lakers. Of
course they're trying to compete. Why do you think they
got Luca? Just like Paulie said, that's stupid.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
Yeah, but why would you say this publicly?

Speaker 2 (07:46):
Don't do you think the front office doesn't realize, Hey Lebron,
don't forget about Lebron. Hey we gotta win championships. Hey,
it's about now. Don't you think you had that conversation
with them when you decided to opt in on that salary. Absolutely,
I would guess you would say to Rob Polinka, hey,
he's going to opt in, but you got to help

(08:06):
him out a little bit here.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
I was just kind of surprised.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
That, Hey, this is about now too, don't forget about Lebron.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
This is about the future with Luca.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
We get that, but I mean, what do you expect
them to do, like trade Austin Reeves and then you're
getting what they still need shooting? They need a big
man perimeter defense is I mean, there's some issues here
that it doesn't just solve it by And Lebron wasn't
taking a discount. They said that right away. He's you know,

(08:39):
he's not giving you a hometown discount. Here just feels
like this is a strange comment to make the end
of June. This is still good team. Are they better
than Denver? Better than Minnesota? They're not better than the Rockets,
I don't think. And they're not better than OKC. If
you just start there now, you still have some bottom

(09:02):
feeders there in the West. But are they a fifth seed?
Are they going to be better than Dallas? When Kyriees
comes back, that team might be better. Yeah, you know.

Speaker 6 (09:17):
I think if you're if you're I don't know. I'm
just trying to play devil's advocate, I guess. But if
you're an Aging Stars agent and you decide to give
it one more go, maybe just putting the emphasis even
though everybody knows it on you know, we don't have
a lot of time left and Lebron needs to win

(09:37):
right now. So we know the Lakers are going to
carry on long after Lebron James is finished, but he
needs to win right now, and that's where our focus
is on right now. You guys might be looking more
to the future, but we need to do this right now.
And you know, I don't know that it's as like
maybe not sinister is the right word, but I don't
know that it's any deeper than like, you know, this

(09:57):
dude's only got maybe a year left here, so we
got to win this year. I don't think there's anything
wrong with that.

Speaker 3 (10:04):
But do you think the front office doesn't realize that.

Speaker 7 (10:07):
I don't know that.

Speaker 6 (10:07):
I think that the front office probably doesn't look at
it as crucially important this one year. As the guy
who's like, I might be done after this, I only
got one year left, maybe two, whereas the Lakers see
themselves as a global brand for hundreds of years.

Speaker 2 (10:22):
But if you're a Lebron and here you're his agent,
don't you then say to the front office, are you
guys all in this year? And then if you're not Hey,
we're building for the future. I mean, we're in and
we're all in, but with the pieces that we have
right now, they're waiting for Lebron's salary to be off

(10:43):
the books. So that's the weird part of this.

Speaker 6 (10:47):
Yeah, Seed, Well, maybe it's setting up a you know,
I don't know mid season.

Speaker 3 (10:55):
It's saucy.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
I don't see it happening because if you're Lebron, let's say,
because he has a no trade, you don't want to
go to a team you're going to weaken by going
to them, and they.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
Have to give pieces to the Lakers.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
If he was going to go, let's say he wanted
to go back to Cleveland, now's when you go just say,
I'm going to go. Put me on that team and
we're going to be the favorites in the East. Will
be the favorites because the East is damaged right now.
You want to win another title, win a title in Cleveland,
you can do that. But I just think there's selfish reasons.

(11:33):
You want to stay in La. Your family's in LA
business opportunities, your son's playing for the team. You probably
can't have it both ways there. But to me, this
is really signaling that yes, you're here. We will compete
this year, but then we have to move on. There's
a whole nother era that's going to start, and maybe

(11:55):
it started this weekend.

Speaker 5 (11:57):
Yes, Mart, if you're the Lakers, do you ask Rich
p All flat out, hey, do you think Lebron has
one year left or two years left? Just so we
can get the show on the road. As far as
preparing for the future with Luca as their.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
Guy, well, did you do a one plus one or
is it just a one year deal? That might tell
you too with the Lakers that they may look at
this as a one year deal.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
I mean, he's obviously.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
Still a great player, and still a draw and still important,
like all of those things. I just think they're saying,
that guy's forty and that guy's twenty six, We're hitching
our wagon to him and come along for the ride.

Speaker 3 (12:35):
He is the guy who's leading us, not you, yeah, pulling.

Speaker 4 (12:39):
It is ironic that if this were any other sport,
they would move on from Lebron James. If this or football,
they would have moved on from well before they were
into this situation. Even baseball, they try not to keep
older guys at the very very end, but the NFL
would never have this direction for a franchise.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
Age seven seven three DP show email addressdpat Danpatrick dot com,
Twitter handle it piece show. Got a gambling investigation, federal
investigation into one of the Detroit Pistons. We'll talk about that.
The prop bets, that's the key. Took away prop bets
from college football, college athletics, and they make a lot

(13:18):
of money prop bets. But then you know, our players
realizing they can make some money too. And you know,
we talked about this early this morning, and Fritzy goes,
why would you do that? You know you're already making
a lot of money. He was ready to sign Beasley,
ready to sign a three year, forty two million dollar deal.

(13:39):
Well you do it because you don't think he'll get caught.
If that's the case, If that's what happened in this situation.
You know John Kay Porter, Michael Porter Junior, the Third's brother,
he was hanging on. He was a fringe player and
probably saying, hey, you know what, I can help some friends.
Maybe I get a couple hundred thousand dollars out of
a day. You're not thinking, hey, why, hey, I could

(14:00):
get caught. You're you you don't think that way. You think, hey,
this is a great opportunity. Nobody will notice. I mean,
that's the great part of this for me is the NBA.
If it's true, they caught him, they found this, they
saw this. You know, Vegas polices, they have to police

(14:21):
the sport. It's their business, multi billion dollar business. We
have to be aware of everything. But we'll have more
on this coming up next hour. But I don't care
how small you know that you think or nobody's gonna

(14:42):
notice me.

Speaker 3 (14:43):
They will. They have to.

Speaker 2 (14:45):
It's like whenever you see something that looks strange, it
goes from this to this that Vegas knows this, they're
watching this. But Beasley is a nine year veteran. You
got some money. If it's true that you are shaving

(15:05):
points or prop bets, they'll catch you. They'll find you.
They have to. It's their job. It's imperative. But for
these guys to go, nobody's gonna notice this little thing here, Hey,
over under rebounds is six and a half. Nobody will notice.
They have to notice because if you tell somebody, that

(15:29):
person tells somebody that it's a game of telephone. After that, Hey,
I got it, I got a tip. This happened to
me when I gambled. Somebody would say, hey, you know
what I'm hearing? Oh yeah, and then somebody would say
and then all of a sudden, by the time I
got to the bed, it went from six and a
half to nine and a half. Like it was like, Okay,

(15:49):
something's up. And then the bookies go, hey, we're going
to react accordingly. And then they take it off the
off the board. They're gonna find.

Speaker 3 (15:57):
You, They're gonna get you.

Speaker 2 (16:00):
And if that's the case, and the FEDS involved in this,
now this isn't the NBA, it's the Feds. We'll talk
about that coming up. All right, we'll get to phone
calls eight seven to seven to three. DP show email

Speaker 2 (16:59):
Lakers also have to deal with Dorian Finney Smith opting
out of the final year of his contract, but seems
like they will bring him back, and then you're going
to have the Austin Reeves situation with his contract that
he turned down, you know, a sizeable raise, but he's
going to be worth more than that, at least feels

(17:20):
like on the open market if he gets to the
open market.

Speaker 3 (17:23):
All right.

Speaker 6 (17:24):
Poll question Seaton for Hour one is going to be what,
well we got one here that we kind of have
to populate a little bit. Okay, but it's fun, it's
good topic. And which sport does it feel like you
have the best chance to go from worse to first
bad to contending but worse the first sort of rhymes
a little better.

Speaker 2 (17:42):
Okay, Well, the NFL and their schedule makers try to
encourage this that they'll give you an easier schedule if
you know, the lower you finish in your division, and
they make it tougher for the team that won the division.
So they have a philosophy in place to do that

(18:04):
to make your schedule a little easier for you to
go from worse to first. You know, basketball's had what
seven different champions the last seven years, So if you
want to say there's parody, there's no dynasty. Feels like
the same teams were playing for the championship in the NFL.

(18:26):
Baseball feels like you get kind of the same teams.
You know, maybe five to seven teams that are going
to be there to win the World Series this year.
How many teams do you think could win the NBA
championship next year? Maybe five?

Speaker 3 (18:44):
Six?

Speaker 2 (18:45):
How many could win in football? Five six, maybe set
maybe seven. Now in the NFL, you get a you know,
it's one game. It's really hard to be a surprise.
When there are seven game series and you have three
or four rounds that you have to go through, you're
not surprising anybody. You'll get exposed eventually. But in football,

(19:09):
just like March Madness, it's one game, one game, and
you can have your best game or you can have
your worst game, and that's where you get surprises. But
I think it's really difficult to look at baseball or
basketball and go that team's going to surprise that team,

(19:30):
and then that team and then that team, and then
win the championship and you're going to win four games
out of seven against those teams.

Speaker 3 (19:36):
It's really hard to do that.

Speaker 2 (19:37):
I would say the NFL gives you the better opportunity
to go from worse to first, but also have that
maybe surprise ish run in the postseason because once again
you only have to beat that team once.

Speaker 3 (19:51):
Yes, PAULI yeah for this poll.

Speaker 4 (19:52):
I was thinking, does the NFL pay structure, I'm sorry,
the NBA pay structure preclude teams from going on a
run from year year, Like if you're a Portland Trailblazers
fan or a Brooklyn Nets fan, you can't think at
all realistically that we could be a contender next year.
It's gonna take years and expiring contracts and you got
to get breaks. But in the NFL you cannot make

(20:15):
the playoffs. One year and make it the next I
looked it up. There have been three teams in the
past forty years that didn't make the playoffs in the
NBA and won the title the next season. The Golden
State Wars in twenty twenty two, the Lakers in twenty twenty,
and the Boston Celtics in two thousand and eight. They
did not make the playoffs and then they won the title.

Speaker 2 (20:41):
But you add injuries to a couple of those teams
that you know prevented them from making the postseason, then
the next year they got healthy.

Speaker 3 (20:50):
Yeah, it's interesting.

Speaker 6 (20:53):
To me how the lottery odds actually hurt in some
ways the prospect of getting better faster because the odds
of getting the best player are flattened. So that actually
hurts the teams at the bottom in a way because
obviously you can't tank, but it makes it way more
of an unknown if you're getting the best player or not.

Speaker 2 (21:16):
Some phone calls here, eh seven seven three DP show
Aiden in Utah is back.

Speaker 3 (21:20):
Hi, Aidan, what do you have for me?

Speaker 9 (21:24):
Yeah, I'm morning dpat. Hey, Hey, Lebron wants to win now, right?
You need more debt? You need to better line up.
I would think you really need the big maybe you
could trade for like an Anthony Davis or something like that.

Speaker 2 (21:42):
Thank you aid, Yeah, Luca wants to have a big man.
I mean they need some things. If you say, well,
they what the number three seed, but weren't they two games,
two wins out of being like the seventh or eighth seed.

Speaker 7 (21:58):
That's right.

Speaker 2 (21:58):
Yeah, so it sounds like, hey, they're a three seed, okay,
but man, it was perilously close to being maybe a
seven or eight seed. Plus half the teams in the
NBA make the playoffs. If you start there, that that's
sixteen teams and then you have to play in so
you have eighteen nineteen teams. Let's see if you're gonna

(22:23):
have any you know, twenty teams that are gonna be
so so twelve teams probably aren't involved in a postseason
conversation exactly right, Probably twelve. Jim in Vegas, Hi, Jim,
what's on your mind today?

Speaker 10 (22:38):
Dan?

Speaker 11 (22:38):
It's a nice talking to again. Spent a long time.
I wasn't gonna think of the best of the worst
of it. I just want to I guess I'm from Detroit,
so that watching the Tigers on Sunday night, that was
pretty impressive. It's been a while, but I got to
disagree with this, sir. I hate to do it about
the NFL scheduling. I think you're about twenty years behind
because the last ide checked, I know, they added a

(23:01):
seventeenth game. But you play six in your division, you
play four against an AFC division, you play four against
an NFC division. That's fourteen games, so that the other
three I don't even know how they do the third one,
but the other two are the only games that are
based on what your ranking was in your division. So

(23:24):
on a fourteen out of seventeen, they're already decided before
the season begins. I hate to do that to you, buddy,
but I just want to check you in on that.

Speaker 12 (23:35):
Well.

Speaker 2 (23:35):
Great, but wasn't it always that way where you were
going to play a division and then you're going to
play the teams in your in your conference?

Speaker 3 (23:43):
Right, wasn't this set like that ten years ago?

Speaker 11 (23:48):
Well, that's what I'm saying. You're saying that it's based
on if you have a bad season. You're saying that
your record is a usin to give you an easier
path to the playoffs because you had a bad season.
I'm saying that's not the case at all, that your
season is did your wreck? Your schedule is determined well

(24:09):
at advance, there's only three games out of seventeen that
are adjusted for your win loss record.

Speaker 2 (24:17):
All right, well, then I sit corrected. Thank you, Jim.
But they always talked about strength of schedule. So I'd
be curious the teams that finish last strength of schedule
coming up this upcoming season. But thank you if you're
correcting me and that's the case. I always thought that
the NFL was hoping for the worst to first, and

(24:40):
there would be a reason for going from worst to first.
That doesn't happen in any other sport, but it does
in the NFL. Let's see Fresh in Milwaukee is back.

Speaker 3 (24:52):
Hi Fresh? What's on your mind?

Speaker 10 (24:54):
Morning? DP? And Dan needs got a good one for
you this Monday. If I give you this, and if
we could take this one around the room, I would
love it. I'll give you everybody in the NBA history
to draft, give me your starting five.

Speaker 2 (25:11):
That'll thank you Fresh, Probably not today, it'll take over
the show. You're you're Mount Rushmore where there's five players now?
And am I building a team now? Is it?

Speaker 7 (25:26):
Is?

Speaker 3 (25:26):
It just one year for my starting five?

Speaker 2 (25:30):
Is it I get a decade of this team or
just one and done, one and done fresh?

Speaker 3 (25:36):
Is that what you're saying.

Speaker 10 (25:37):
No, we're taking it for the decade. Give me a
decade starting five?

Speaker 3 (25:41):
That all right?

Speaker 2 (25:45):
Uh, Marvin, you got one for fresh air.

Speaker 5 (25:52):
Moses Malone at center, Dirt Novinsky at the four, Lebron
at the three, MG at the two, Jason Kidd at
the one.

Speaker 3 (26:03):
That's your all time team off.

Speaker 7 (26:06):
The top of my head. Oh, you think I go
wrong with them?

Speaker 3 (26:09):
Well I wouldn't.

Speaker 7 (26:11):
Well, okay, cheer team, you better start playing with Moses more.

Speaker 2 (26:14):
I'm the one that brought up Moses Malone to you.
You don't even know about Moses Malone all of a sudden,
you go, Man, look at his numbers. Yeah, won a
couple MVPs.

Speaker 7 (26:24):
You said, who didn't know about Moses Moran?

Speaker 3 (26:26):
Fo fo foe.

Speaker 4 (26:27):
Yes, Paulie, I think, off the top of my head
my starting five all time, I'll go Magic Johnson, Steph Curry,
Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Hakeim, Elijah On.

Speaker 7 (26:40):
Hey, I'll go to bat with that.

Speaker 2 (26:42):
I don't know if there's a wrong answer here, Yeah,
but I would now Paulie put Jordan at the three. Now,
if we did position basketball, that would be more interesting.
If I said, hey, Mike's Mike's guard, Magic's a guard.
That means you can't have Steph Curry, or you can

(27:04):
have Steph, but you can't have Mike at the three.
Larry would be at the three, then who's at your four?
And then who's at your five? When basketball was not positionless,
So Todd, do you have a starting five? Do you
want to throw in here?

Speaker 13 (27:18):
I like what Paulie said, but put Kareem in the
middle if we were going by positions.

Speaker 3 (27:22):
Okay, so you're cheating off Paulie.

Speaker 13 (27:26):
Okay, but I think I know how you feel about Kareem.
I would definitely want to make sure mj and Kareem
were two of.

Speaker 3 (27:31):
My right seaton.

Speaker 6 (27:33):
Uh, Magic, Michael Lebron, Tim Duncan, Kareem m.

Speaker 3 (27:42):
Okay, Yeah, you can't go wrong, you can't. No, no, yeah.

Speaker 4 (27:49):
Paul I like to look this up once in a while.
Do you don't because you're talking about positions and Michael
Jordan was listed as a shooting guard for most of
his career. The two years he was on Washington, Michael
Jordan was listed a face as a small forward. How weird,
m because a player decides that thought, thank you, thank you.

Speaker 7 (28:11):
It's weird.

Speaker 4 (28:12):
Like Tim Duncan was listed at power forward for six years,
then center for three years, then back to power forward.
I don't know how that works.

Speaker 2 (28:20):
Well, you have a better chance of being All NBA
because there's two forwards as opposed to one center. And
that's why a lot of these guys don't want to
be listed or didn't want to be listed as a center.
Uh Dane in Texas, Hi Dane, what's on your mind?

Speaker 12 (28:37):
Hey, hey darn, good morning, Good morning you all? Are
you all are big on bets? Since you're talking about
gambling pie in the face, I was wondering if Dylan
would be up to the challenge of a pie in
the stomach. So you'd have maybe a segment or two
to eat the pie, depending on who lost the bet,
and you'd have to have a standardized pie. So it's

(29:00):
Sam's Club, it's a twelve inch diameter, it's four point
five pounds, and you know you'd have to eat the
pie in the segment or two and the bet I've
got Notre Dame Miami, Notre Dame is favored by two
and a half. He can have you decided a bet?

Speaker 2 (29:18):
Thank you, Dan, it's late June. We're betting on Notre
Dame in Miami. Call us in August. There, Dane, call
Us in August. Uh Marcus and Texas. Hi Marcus, what's
on your mind?

Speaker 10 (29:33):
Hey Dan?

Speaker 14 (29:34):
Yeah, I want to follow up about that the guy
that just called in about the scheduling. You are right,
they do make the schedule easier for the teams. They
are played out ahead. But like the AFC North might
play the NFC North and the whoever finishes last the
year before and the AFC Norms will play the last
place team in the NFC North.

Speaker 9 (29:55):
So you're both kind of right, but you're both kind
of wrong.

Speaker 2 (30:00):
That's kind of my life there. Thank you Marcus, Thank
you Ed? And Idaho?

Speaker 15 (30:05):
Ed?

Speaker 3 (30:05):
What's going on your How are you Ed?

Speaker 10 (30:10):
Good?

Speaker 16 (30:10):
How are you Dan?

Speaker 3 (30:11):
Daho?

Speaker 9 (30:12):
Thanks? One buck eighty all right?

Speaker 16 (30:16):
And uh pooch fifteen inches at the shoulder, forty two
pounds okay. So best and worst for the weekend was
the Cobra dying and the best was then the Bucks
sweeping the Mets. And there's a stat of the day
in there that's the third time the Pirates have swept
a series and won every game by at least seven

(30:39):
runs in the last time since nineteen thirty or the
first time since nineteen thirty five.

Speaker 2 (30:44):
Stat of the day, stat of the day, that best
stat of the day, stat of the day, it comes
that what stat.

Speaker 3 (30:53):
Of the day?

Speaker 2 (30:56):
Yes Ed was mentioning the Cobra passing away. Dave Parker
was the Cobra great nickname and what a talented fearsome
like when you saw him at the plate, there was trouble,
but he got kind of lost in Willie Stargoe and
Roberto Clemente when you talk about great Pirates of all time.
Parker was from Cincinnati. I think quarter Tech High School

(31:18):
was a running back. You imagine him as a running
high school But when you saw him at the plate,
when you're six five, two thirty and you come to
the plate and a great right fielder and great arm,
one of the more powerful arms in baseball history. But
Dave Parker passing away at the age of seventy four,

(31:41):
and he had been sick for a while. You know,
when I had gone back to Ohio, I'd heard about
that he was not doing well and In fact, somebody
reached out and sent some Dave Parker memorabilia to the program,
So it was nice, nice to be able to mention
him and remind him of just how great he was.

Speaker 5 (32:03):
Yes, Marvin over the weekend after hearing about his passing,
just everybody, YouTube, Google whatever, nineteen seventy nine All Star Game,
Dave Parker. He makes two ridiculous throws, two of the
greatest throws I've ever seen in my life in the
same game in an All Star game.

Speaker 7 (32:21):
YouTube met You're welcome.

Speaker 2 (32:22):
You were not running on Parker. It used to be
where you put your best arm in right field. They
always had the guy who had a gun, and he
was in right field, and Parker certainly was that. If
you're a Stratomatic fan, he probably was a minus five nice,
which as good as you can get. Thank you, Tom.
How about we take a.

Speaker 7 (32:41):
Break Stratamatic shout at us, sir.

Speaker 2 (32:46):
I loved I loved playing strata Matic. So it's a
dice game with baseball cards, and it was a lot
of fun. Played a lot when I was at the Mothership.
Usually after a sports center, I'd play Stratumatic wind Down
and I'd be like, it was great and I learned

(33:06):
so much about you know, the baseball players and stats
and who was who was a gold glove guy, and
who was a guy who was you know, great first
to third or stealing bases. You know, somebody was not
a good outfielder, like it told you. It gave you
all these rankings, and if it's just it was kind

(33:26):
of enlightening of that guy was a whole lot better
than I thought, or that guy's not as good as
I thought.

Speaker 3 (33:32):
Yes, Don, And they had those little pink split cards.

Speaker 13 (33:34):
So if you try to steal a base, if it
goes from one to twenty, and if a catcher had
a ranking of like one to seventeen, and all of
a sudden, it would be five less, So it'd be
that much harder to steal a base if it was
one of the better catcher's arms.

Speaker 7 (33:45):
It's good stuff.

Speaker 3 (33:46):
Yeah, like I ran a little too.

Speaker 2 (33:48):
Yeah, you really explain that. Well, Okay, we'll take a break.
We got our play of the day up next.

Speaker 1 (33:55):

Speaker 3 (34:23):
Tom's wants with the winning run.

Speaker 12 (34:25):
Had the Reds walk off with a series victory over
the Podraings.

(34:54):
place teams. As we head to the beginning of July, Yankees, Tigers, Astros,
Lee's Cubs, and the Dodgers. Some phone calls here, let's
see JP and Alabama. Hi JP, what's on your mind today? Hey?

Speaker 18 (35:11):
How are you doing there?

Speaker 10 (35:12):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (35:12):
Good? Good?

Speaker 18 (35:15):
Oh well, I didn't know about the news with le
Bron taking this play Austin Soil. You guys kind of
said something about it, but I was just wondering if
he cared about winning so much, then why is Ronnie
on the team.

Speaker 2 (35:32):
Bronnie is a guy who plays like he was the
fifty fifth pick in the draft, and it's an extra
roster spot. And this goes along with I don't know
if you're going to get somebody who might take his place,
who was going to have that much of an impact
on the Lakers this year. But I get what you're saying,

(35:54):
Kurt and Ohio, Hi, Kurt, what's on your mind today?

Speaker 10 (35:57):
Good morn d.

Speaker 17 (36:00):
Fifty. I was just calling about earlier. Let call a
reference that the NFL, the straight the schedule doesn't mean
too much because it's only two games. Well, two games
is huge in the NFL when you talk about only
seventeen clearly the less fewest amount of any sport. Those
two games completely can mean the difference between a playoff spot,

(36:22):
a wild card, number one speed seed, or even missing
the playoffs completely. And if you look at the listing
of the teams this year, they're strength of schedule, with
the rare exception of like the Giants having the hardest
the most of the best teams in the league that
you would expect to have the hardest schedule because they're
the best teams are in the top ten, and I

(36:43):
just thought that that was you know, very you know,
interesting compared to and like you said, in other sports Baseball, basketball, hockey,
it's harder to turn around as a Blue Jackets span
twenty five years of winning one playoff series. They're not
winning anytime soon. Guardians, Reds doubtful, Brownies, Bengals doubtful as well.

(37:05):
Just wanted to make my two cents on that, Dan,
and I hope you and the guys have a great day.

Speaker 3 (37:09):
Thank you. Kurt.

Speaker 2 (37:11):
Yeah, you know, unless I'm wrong, I always thought that
they the NFL tried to encourage or help or hope
that if you were a last place, that they wanted
everybody to have a chance or at least you went
into the season thinking, hey, if things go right, or
we have that team at our place instead of playing

(37:32):
that team on the road, strength to schedule. I was
always under the impression in the NFL that that was
part of the I guess the methods that they would
have in trying to create more parody there getting into
the postseason or at least the chance to be They
love when teams are eight to nine, nine and eight.

(37:55):
They love that because you have a chance. Yes, paulin two.

Speaker 4 (37:59):
Those teams you mentioned, the Bengals, Colts, and Dolphins were
all right there. They were all missed the playoffs by
just one game. In the NFC, the Seahawks missed the
playoffs by just one game.

Speaker 8 (38:09):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (38:10):
Ted in Nevana, Hi, Ted, what's on your mind today?

Speaker 10 (38:13):
Hey Dan?

Speaker 3 (38:14):
How you doing today?

Speaker 7 (38:15):
Great?

Speaker 2 (38:15):
Ted?

Speaker 7 (38:16):
First time?

Speaker 15 (38:17):
First time caller?

Speaker 19 (38:18):
Six five five?

Speaker 1 (38:22):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (38:22):
The six five is.

Speaker 15 (38:23):
My age, not my height. It's my bad anyway. I
just want to add into my Mount Rushmore team quick.
It would be Patrick Ewing, Moses Malone, doctor j Charles Barkley,
and Allen Iverson. You can't just pick superstars. You got
to pick superstars that can play together. And and your

(38:43):
point to the to the football being such a unique
one and done type of thing, anybody can win it.
The Patriots lost three Super Bowls and outplayed every opponent
that they lost to. They also won some Super Bowls
that they didn't play as well as their opponent and
won the game. So football is unique to that.

Speaker 3 (39:04):
All right? Thank you? Jed Jonathan in Texas, Hi, Jonathan,
Hey Dan?

Speaker 19 (39:12):
Five to eleven and a todbod to twenty five. Okay,
best and worst of the weekend, best of the weekend.
Both of these have to do with last week's show.
I heard somebody use a nickname this weekend, referring to
Stephen A. Smith as screaming a Smith. So that's the

(39:33):
best of the weekend. My worst of the weekend is
I had to go through the entire weekend knowing that
Dan Patrick hates me because my last name is Mayo.

Speaker 3 (39:49):
Is that a tough last name to grow up with, Jonathan?

Speaker 19 (39:54):
It was as a kid. As an adult, I've kind
of embraced it, and whenever I would play intermural softball,
I was often referred to as the condiment.

Speaker 3 (40:10):
Thank you, Jonathan. That'd be a good nickname, the condiment.
Although I'm not big on Mayo.

Speaker 2 (40:18):
Obviously, if you were going to be the big condiment,
like mustard, the big condiment, Yeah, here he comes, the
big condiment, Yes, Tom.

Speaker 13 (40:31):
But the ladies want to hold the Mayo. Could make
us something positive. Thank you, Todt.

Speaker 2 (40:40):
More phone calls coming up and more on the gambling
probe by the FEDS with a member of the Detroit
Pistons and Beasley was on the verge I think three
or forty two million dollar contract and he's been around.

Speaker 3 (40:55):
A while, eight or nine years. Prop bets.

Speaker 2 (41:00):
Yes. Now, all of a sudden, you go back and
you start looking at certain moments. Yes, Ton, you may
have bet on himself, not in a good way. Thank you,
