big news, but it struck me as a little news ish.
And that's the Lakers with Lebron James. He opts in,
and I don't know if there was any real mystery
that would he not opt in, would he become a

free agent? Does he want to go someplace else? Keep
in mind what he said on his podcast with Steve
Nash that it's really not about rings if you're going
to look at somebody's legacy or their greatness. And I
thought it was his way passive aggressively saying, hey, I'm
not going to catch Michael Jordan, but that doesn't mean
I'm not better than Michael Jordan. It was a passive

aggressive comment. And if they counted the passive aggressive assist
for Lebron James, he'd probably have about five under more
assist on his total. Very passive aggressive, very good at
being passive aggressive. But his agent, Rich Paul said that
Lebron knows the Lakers are building for the future, but

he also wants to compete for championships. This is Rich
Paul telling the Athletic and the Mothership goes on to say,
we understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for
the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for
Lebron at this stage in his life and career. He
wants to make every season he has left count and

the Lakers understand them, and they're supportive and they want
what's best for him. We're very appreciative of the partnership
we've had for eight years with Genie Buss, Rob Polenka,
and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career. Okay,
this is all about Luka Doncic. This is his team now.

It's official, Lebron, hey got some nice parting gifts. I
hope you enjoy a farewell tour. Aaron Rodgers going to
have farewell tours. You can play one more season with
your son here. But this is about the Lakers, not
wanting to do something drastic just for now. This is
about building the future. Is Austin Reeve's going to stay there.

He turned down a contract extension. He's going to make
more money, but this will be the final year and
they're going to have to pay more money, and rightfully so,
I mean, he's been a bargain, a very good player.
Luca wants to have a big man. Who are you
going to get? And the first thing I thought of
is Lebron's staying and look, he's still maybe a top

ten player, certainly top fifteen player. But they want to
be in the sweepstakes for Jannis. That's what struck me
here is, Hey, Milwaukee has traded a big man to
Los Angeles before and it worked out really well for
the Lakers. Can they get Yannis? Would they be involved
in that picture? When you clear Lebron's salary fifty plus

million off the books? And I think that's what this
is all about. It's Luca's team. Lebron is there and
there's going to be a farewell tour. And you know,
for everybody who said, wait a minute, I've thought Lebron's
the GM. Maybe he was the GM five or six
years ago, seven years ago, not the GM. Now, now,

what are you going to do? Can you do something?
And you're still going to be competitive? I mean you
can win upwards of fifty five games this year, I think.
But they right now, the Lakers have the fifth best
odds to win the title according to DraftKings. To win
the Western Conference, they're up there, but Houston's really good. Okay,

see just won a title, So you got to start there.
You're not on their level, at least not right now,
because those teams are young and still hungry and they're deep.
The Lakers are not. But that doesn't mean with Luca.
We've seen Luca take a team to the NBA Finals.
Now you do, you have Lebron and Reeves, you do

have some pieces there. The question is sort of what
is reality? And in Los Angeles Hollywood, you don't always
deal in reality. Sometimes you're like in La La Land,
seet's see what I did? Okay, you guys, hey, come

what the Lakers win total prop bet would be, but
you know, probably a fifty two to fifty three win team.
But you know they bowed out against Minnesota early against
a younger team. Once again, you got a factor in
Minnesota as well because they're still a formidable team. But

it just struck me, as hey, what about Lebron? And
it felt like the Lakers were saying, yeah, yeah, we're
gonna pay him that money and keep his son on
the roster. And but this is Luca's team, and now
what we do will be to incorporate what we think
will help Luca in the future. This is about the future.
It's not about now. Got to keep Lebron. He wants

to stay in La all the business opportunities he has,
and you have your son there. But it feels like
this is the last year Lebron plays for the Lakers.
Does he play another year someplace else? That's always the possibility.

Yes, Buony, this reminds you of SEC football when you
have a really good senior quarterback, but you have a
five star recruit coming in and the five star recruit
is wagging the dog like Clemson back in the day.
I saw the quote by Rich Paul, I understood it. Obviously,
you want to do as much as you can in
the near future to build for the near future. But
the Lakers five months ago, yesterday or tomorrow, they traded

for Luka Dacic, which establishes their current and future. In
one of the great swindles in recent basketball history. It's
like they forgot about this.

Yeah, that was building for the future, but it was
helping now by getting one of the top five players
in the world. But I don't know if Lebron sees
it that way. He knows it's Luca's team. Why make
this public? Can you make it public to put pressure
on the front office to do something here, or if

the team's not that good, we told you to do something.
I'm just kind of surprised that rich Paul was going
to say this, you know publicly, Yes, Marmon.

course they're trying to compete. Why do you think they

he's not giving you a hometown discount. Here just feels
like this is a strange comment to make the end
of June. This is still good team. Are they better
than Denver? Better than Minnesota? They're not better than the Rockets,
I don't think. And they're not better than OKC. If
you just start there now, you still have some bottom

feeders there in the West. But are they a fifth seed?
Are they going to be better than Dallas? When Kyriees
comes back, that team might be better. Yeah, you know.

just trying to play devil's advocate, I guess. But if
you're an Aging Stars agent and you decide to give
it one more go, maybe just putting the emphasis even
though everybody knows it on you know, we don't have
a lot of time left and Lebron needs to win

right now. So we know the Lakers are going to
carry on long after Lebron James is finished, but he
needs to win right now, and that's where our focus
is on right now. You guys might be looking more
to the future, but we need to do this right now.
And you know, I don't know that it's as like
maybe not sinister is the right word, but I don't
know that it's any deeper than like, you know, this

dude's only got maybe a year left here, so we
got to win this year. I don't think there's anything
wrong with that.

I think that the front office probably doesn't look at
it as crucially important this one year. As the guy
who's like, I might be done after this, I only
got one year left, maybe two, whereas the Lakers see
themselves as a global brand for hundreds of years.

But if you're a Lebron and here you're his agent,
don't you then say to the front office, are you
guys all in this year? And then if you're not Hey,
we're building for the future. I mean, we're in and
we're all in, but with the pieces that we have
right now, they're waiting for Lebron's salary to be off

the books. So that's the weird part of this.

If he was going to go, let's say he wanted
to go back to Cleveland, now's when you go just say,
I'm going to go. Put me on that team and
we're going to be the favorites in the East. Will

You want to win another title, win a title in Cleveland,
you can do that. But I just think there's selfish reasons.

You want to stay in La. Your family's in LA
business opportunities, your son's playing for the team. You probably
can't have it both ways there. But to me, this
is really signaling that yes, you're here. We will compete
this year, but then we have to move on. There's
a whole nother era that's going to start, and maybe

it started this weekend.

Yes, Mart, if you're the Lakers, do you ask Rich
p All flat out, hey, do you think Lebron has
one year left or two years left? Just so we

It is ironic that if this were any other sport,
they would move on from Lebron James. If this or football,
they would have moved on from well before they were
into this situation. Even baseball, they try not to keep
older guys at the very very end, but the NFL
would never have this direction for a franchise.

a day. You're not thinking, hey, why, hey, I could

this is a great opportunity. Nobody will notice. I mean,
that's the great part of this for me is the NBA.
If it's true, they caught him, they found this, they

have to be aware of everything. But we'll have more

Okay, Well, the NFL and their schedule makers try to
encourage this that they'll give you an easier schedule if
you know, the lower you finish in your division, and
they make it tougher for the team that won the division.
So they have a philosophy in place to do that

to make your schedule a little easier for you to
go from worse to first. You know, basketball's had what
seven different champions the last seven years, So if you
want to say there's parody, there's no dynasty. Feels like
the same teams were playing for the championship in the NFL.
(18:26):
Baseball feels like you get kind of the same teams.
You know, maybe five to seven teams that are going
to be there to win the World Series this year.
How many teams do you think could win the NBA
championship next year? Maybe five?

Six?
Speaker 2 (18:45):
How many could win in football? Five six, maybe set
maybe seven. Now in the NFL, you get a you know,
it's one game. It's really hard to be a surprise.
When there are seven game series and you have three
or four rounds that you have to go through, you're
not surprising anybody. You'll get exposed eventually. But in football,

just like March Madness, it's one game, one game, and
you can have your best game or you can have
your worst game, and that's where you get surprises. But
I think it's really difficult to look at baseball or
basketball and go that team's going to surprise that team,
(19:30):
and then that team and then that team, and then
win the championship and you're going to win four games
out of seven against those teams.

It's really hard to do that.

I would say the NFL gives you the better opportunity
to go from worse to first, but also have that
maybe surprise ish run in the postseason because once again
you only have to beat that team once.

I was thinking, does the NFL pay structure, I'm sorry,
the NBA pay structure preclude teams from going on a
run from year year, Like if you're a Portland Trailblazers
fan or a Brooklyn Nets fan, you can't think at
all realistically that we could be a contender next year.
It's gonna take years and expiring contracts and you got
to get breaks. But in the NFL you cannot make

the playoffs. One year and make it the next I
looked it up. There have been three teams in the
past forty years that didn't make the playoffs in the
NBA and won the title the next season. The Golden
State Wars in twenty twenty two, the Lakers in twenty twenty,
and the Boston Celtics in two thousand and eight. They
did not make the playoffs and then they won the title.

But you add injuries to a couple of those teams
that you know prevented them from making the postseason, then
the next year they got healthy.

Yeah, it's interesting.

To me how the lottery odds actually hurt in some
ways the prospect of getting better faster because the odds
of getting the best player are flattened. So that actually
hurts the teams at the bottom in a way because
obviously you can't tank, but it makes it way more
of an unknown if you're getting the best player or not.

the NFL scheduling. I think you're about twenty years behind
because the last ide checked, I know, they added a

seventeenth game. But you play six in your division, you
play four against an AFC division, you play four against
an NFC division. That's fourteen games, so that the other
three I don't even know how they do the third one,
but the other two are the only games that are
based on what your ranking was in your division. So

on a fourteen out of seventeen, they're already decided before
the season begins. I hate to do that to you, buddy,
but I just want to check you in on that.

two games completely can mean the difference between a playoff spot,

a wild card, number one speed seed, or even missing
the playoffs completely. And if you look at the listing
of the teams this year, they're strength of schedule, with
the rare exception of like the Giants having the hardest

just thought that that was you know, very you know,
interesting compared to and like you said, in other sports Baseball, basketball, hockey,

in mind what he said on his podcast with Steve
Nash that it's really not about rings if you're going
to look at somebody's legacy or their greatness. And I
thought it was his way passive aggressively saying, hey, I'm
not going to catch Michael Jordan, but that doesn't mean
I'm not better than Michael Jordan. It was a passive

aggressive comment. And if they counted the passive aggressive assist
for Lebron James, he'd probably have about five under more
assist on his total. Very passive aggressive, very good at
being passive aggressive. But his agent, Rich Paul said that
Lebron knows the Lakers are building for the future, but

he also wants to compete for championships. This is Rich
Paul telling the Athletic and the Mothership goes on to say,
we understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for
the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for
Lebron at this stage in his life and career. He
wants to make every season he has left count and

the Lakers understand them, and they're supportive and they want
what's best for him. We're very appreciative of the partnership
we've had for eight years with Genie Buss, Rob Polenka,
and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career. Okay,
this is all about Luka Doncic. This is his team now.

It's official, Lebron, hey got some nice parting gifts. I
hope you enjoy a farewell tour. Aaron Rodgers going to
have farewell tours. You can play one more season with
your son here. But this is about the Lakers, not
wanting to do something drastic just for now. This is
about building the future. Is Austin Reeve's going to stay there.

He turned down a contract extension. He's going to make
more money, but this will be the final year and
they're going to have to pay more money, and rightfully so,
I mean, he's been a bargain, a very good player.
Luca wants to have a big man. Who are you
going to get? And the first thing I thought of
is Lebron's staying and look, he's still maybe a top

ten player, certainly top fifteen player. But they want to
be in the sweepstakes for Jannis. That's what struck me
here is, Hey, Milwaukee has traded a big man to
Los Angeles before and it worked out really well for
the Lakers. Can they get Yannis? Would they be involved
in that picture? When you clear Lebron's salary fifty plus

million off the books? And I think that's what this
is all about. It's Luca's team. Lebron is there and
there's going to be a farewell tour. And you know,
for everybody who said, wait a minute, I've thought Lebron's
the GM. Maybe he was the GM five or six
years ago, seven years ago, not the GM. Now, now,

what are you going to do? Can you do something?
And you're still going to be competitive? I mean you
can win upwards of fifty five games this year, I think.
But they right now, the Lakers have the fifth best
odds to win the title according to DraftKings. To win
the Western Conference, they're up there, but Houston's really good. Okay,

see just won a title, So you got to start there.
You're not on their level, at least not right now,
because those teams are young and still hungry and they're deep.
The Lakers are not. But that doesn't mean with Luca.
We've seen Luca take a team to the NBA Finals.
Now you do, you have Lebron and Reeves, you do

have some pieces there. The question is sort of what
is reality? And in Los Angeles Hollywood, you don't always
deal in reality. Sometimes you're like in La La Land,
seet's see what I did? Okay, you guys, hey, come

what the Lakers win total prop bet would be, but
you know, probably a fifty two to fifty three win team.
But you know they bowed out against Minnesota early against

it felt like the Lakers were saying, yeah, yeah, we're
gonna pay him that money and keep his son on
the roster. And but this is Luca's team, and now
what we do will be to incorporate what we think
will help Luca in the future. This is about the future.
It's not about now. Got to keep Lebron. He wants

to stay in La all the business opportunities he has,
and you have your son there. But it feels like
this is the last year Lebron plays for the Lakers.
Does he play another year someplace else? That's always the possibility.

Yes, Buony, this reminds you of SEC football when you
have a really good senior quarterback, but you have a
five star recruit coming in and the five star recruit
is wagging the dog like Clemson back in the day.
I saw the quote by Rich Paul, I understood it. Obviously,
you want to do as much as you can in
the near future to build for the near future. But
the Lakers five months ago, yesterday or tomorrow, they traded

for Luka Dacic, which establishes their current and future. In
one of the great swindles in recent basketball history. It's
like they forgot about this.

Yeah, that was building for the future, but it was
helping now by getting one of the top five players
in the world. But I don't know if Lebron sees
it that way. He knows it's Luca's team. Why make
this public? Can you make it public to put pressure
on the front office to do something here, or if

the team's not that good, we told you to do something.
I'm just kind of surprised that rich Paul was going
to say this, you know publicly, Yes, Marmon.

Rich Paul's treating the Lakers like they're the hornets, Like,
are you guys trying to compete? They're the Lakers. Of
course they're trying to compete. Why do you think they
got Luca? Just like Paulie said, that's stupid.

he's not giving you a hometown discount. Here just feels
like this is a strange comment to make the end
of June. This is still good team. Are they better
than Denver? Better than Minnesota? They're not better than the Rockets,
I don't think. And they're not better than OKC. If
you just start there now, you still have some bottom

feeders there in the West. But are they a fifth seed?
Are they going to be better than Dallas? When Kyriees
comes back, that team might be better. Yeah, you know.

you're an Aging Stars agent and you decide to give
it one more go, maybe just putting the emphasis even
though everybody knows it on you know, we don't have

carry on long after Lebron James is finished, but he
needs to win right now, and that's where our focus
is on right now. You guys might be looking more
to the future, but we need to do this right now.

know that it's any deeper than like, you know, this

dude's only got maybe a year left here, so we
got to win this year. I don't think there's anything
wrong with that.

it as crucially important this one year. As the guy

don't you then say to the front office, are you
guys all in this year? And then if you're not Hey,
we're building for the future. I mean, we're in and
we're all in, but with the pieces that we have
right now, they're waiting for Lebron's salary to be off

the books. So that's the weird part of this.

to go back to Cleveland, now's when you go just say,

You want to win another title, win a title in Cleveland,
you can do that. But I just think there's selfish reasons.

You want to stay in La. Your family's in LA
business opportunities, your son's playing for the team. You probably
can't have it both ways there. But to me, this
is really signaling that yes, you're here. We will compete
this year, but then we have to move on. There's
a whole nother era that's going to start, and maybe

he was hanging on. He was a fringe player and

a day. You're not thinking, hey, why, hey, I could

this is a great opportunity. Nobody will notice. I mean,
that's the great part of this for me is the NBA.
If it's true, they caught him, they found this, they

have to be aware of everything. But we'll have more

have the best chance to go from worse to first

Okay, Well, the NFL and their schedule makers try to
encourage this that they'll give you an easier schedule if
you know, the lower you finish in your division, and
they make it tougher for the team that won the division.
So they have a philosophy in place to do that

to make your schedule a little easier for you to
go from worse to first. You know, basketball's had what
seven different champions the last seven years, So if you
want to say there's parody, there's no dynasty. Feels like
the same teams were playing for the championship in the NFL.
(18:26):
Baseball feels like you get kind of the same teams.
You know, maybe five to seven teams that are going
to be there to win the World Series this year.
How many teams do you think could win the NBA
championship next year? Maybe five?
Speaker 3 (18:44):
Six?
Speaker 2 (18:45):
How many could win in football? Five six, maybe set
maybe seven. Now in the NFL, you get a you know,
it's one game. It's really hard to be a surprise.
When there are seven game series and you have three
or four rounds that you have to go through, you're
not surprising anybody. You'll get exposed eventually. But in football,
(19:09):
just like March Madness, it's one game, one game, and
you can have your best game or you can have
your worst game, and that's where you get surprises. But
I think it's really difficult to look at baseball or
basketball and go that team's going to surprise that team,
(19:30):
and then that team and then that team, and then
win the championship and you're going to win four games
out of seven against those teams.

It's really hard to do that.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
I would say the NFL gives you the better opportunity
to go from worse to first, but also have that
maybe surprise ish run in the postseason because once again
you only have to beat that team once.
Speaker 3 (19:51):

I was thinking, does the NFL pay structure, I'm sorry,
the NBA pay structure preclude teams from going on a
run from year year, Like if you're a Portland Trailblazers
fan or a Brooklyn Nets fan, you can't think at
all realistically that we could be a contender next year.
It's gonna take years and expiring contracts and you got
to get breaks. But in the NFL you cannot make

the playoffs. One year and make it the next I
looked it up. There have been three teams in the
past forty years that didn't make the playoffs in the
NBA and won the title the next season. The Golden
State Wars in twenty twenty two, the Lakers in twenty twenty,
and the Boston Celtics in two thousand and eight. They
did not make the playoffs and then they won the title.

But you add injuries to a couple of those teams
that you know prevented them from making the postseason, then
the next year they got healthy.

Yeah, it's interesting.

To me how the lottery odds actually hurt in some
ways the prospect of getting better faster because the odds
of getting the best player are flattened. So that actually
hurts the teams at the bottom in a way because
obviously you can't tank, but it makes it way more
of an unknown if you're getting the best player or not.

the NFL scheduling. I think you're about twenty years behind
because the last ide checked, I know, they added a

seventeenth game. But you play six in your division, you
play four against an AFC division, you play four against
an NFC division. That's fourteen games, so that the other
three I don't even know how they do the third one,
but the other two are the only games that are
based on what your ranking was in your division. So

on a fourteen out of seventeen, they're already decided before
the season begins. I hate to do that to you, buddy,
but I just want to check you in on that.

Parker was from Cincinnati. I think quarter Tech High School

was a running back. You imagine him as a running
high school But when you saw him at the plate,

the plate and a great right fielder and great arm,
one of the more powerful arms in baseball history. But
Dave Parker passing away at the age of seventy four,

when I had gone back to Ohio, I'd heard about
that he was not doing well and In fact, somebody
reached out and sent some Dave Parker memorabilia to the program,
So it was nice, nice to be able to mention
him and remind him of just how great he was.

Fifty. I was just calling about earlier. Let call a
reference that the NFL, the straight the schedule doesn't mean
too much because it's only two games. Well, two games
is huge in the NFL when you talk about only
seventeen clearly the less fewest amount of any sport. Those
two games completely can mean the difference between a playoff spot,

a wild card, number one speed seed, or even missing
the playoffs completely. And if you look at the listing
of the teams this year, they're strength of schedule, with
the rare exception of like the Giants having the hardest
the most of the best teams in the league that
you would expect to have the hardest schedule because they're
the best teams are in the top ten, and I

just thought that that was you know, very you know,
interesting compared to and like you said, in other sports Baseball, basketball, hockey,
it's harder to turn around as a Blue Jackets span
twenty five years of winning one playoff series. They're not
winning anytime soon. Guardians, Reds doubtful, Brownies, Bengals doubtful as well.

they the NFL tried to encourage or help or hope

always under the impression in the NFL that that was
part of the I guess the methods that they would
have in trying to create more parody there getting into
