You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
I am sports tired, and it's the best kind of
tired to be. I thought, Chiefs up by ten, maybe
say good night to Mike Tarico and Chris Collinsworth, And
all of a sudden, I'm staying up. And then all
of a sudden it ends like this last night and
(00:25):
we see it and the toe, no, he's out of bounds,
that's toenail. And the clock expired as well, So this
would end the game if they rule this an incompletion.
The runner's toe get out of bounds. It's an interprete past.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
The game is over, shown hockeyly, I never loved you more,
brother in complete?
Speaker 2 (00:48):
And Kansas City, when's this game? By a toenail? And
you might derive that that's the Chiefs Radio network there
with the call night eighty six point five. The fan
in Kansas City buy a toenail there? Plus, you know
what I loved about this? If that call did stand,
(01:09):
John Harball was going for two. He was going for
the win, all right, just getting started. Stat of the

(02:35):
be Texas at Michigan. Michigan is a seven point underdog
at home. Joel Klatt will be on the call for Fox.
He'll join us coming up in about thirty minutes from now.
All right, So I'm watching the game last night, and
as I finished watching the game, I'm thinking, Okay, if
I'm a Ravens fan, how do I feel? I feel
really good, and then I feel really bad, like I
(02:59):
had mixed oceans. And if I'm a Chiefs fan, I
feel really good. But then there's part of me that's like, okay,
we gave up a lot of yards. We did win.
I didn't think either team looked particularly good. I think
there were moments and we, of course all had the
same thought about Xavier Worthy. It was like, all right,
(03:21):
there's a touchdown. All right, there's another touchdown. And I
kept thinking about the Buffalo Bills. When the Chiefs say
to the Bills, Hey, you're gonna use that first round
draft pick? Could we trade up? Sure? Would you be
taking an offensive weapon? Oh? I don't know. The Chiefs
(03:42):
select Xavier Worthy, fastest player in the draft. Now, the
Bills did get the thirty second pick. I think they
traded down to thirty third and they took Keon Coleman
out of Florida State, and by all accounts, seems like
he could be a a really really good player for them.
But here's Xavier Worthy and Buffalo allows them to move up.
(04:07):
First touch touchdown. By the way, Xavier Worthy is the
ninth first round pick to score touchdown on his first
touch from scrimmage in his debut. Davonte Smith did it
for the Eagles in twenty twenty one, Marquise Brown with
the Ravens in twenty nineteen. Aj Green with the Bengals
(04:28):
twenty eleven, two thousand and eight, Robert Meetcham for the Saints,
Felix Jones for the Cowboys in eight, Vernon Davis O
six for the Niners, Mike Williams for the Lions OH five,
Heath Miller OH five with the Steelers. Stat of the Day,

Rich Eisen, the face of the NFL Network, will join us.
(05:13):
Coming up a little bit later on. Matt Liner will
stop by. Jerry Ferrara, who played Turtle on Entourage. He's
been in a lot of other things. They're doing a podcast.
Nancy Lieberman, Hall of Fame basketball player and broadcaster in
the WNBA. She'll join us a little bit later on
as well. Lamar Jackson rushed for one twenty two in
the loss last night. Third quarterback to rush for one
(05:35):
hundred yards in a season opener. The last time it
happened was a Raiders quarterback in twenty thirteen. Anybody want
to gauge a guess. Twenty thirteen Raiders quarterback rushed for
over one hundred yards in his debut. If you said
(05:56):
Terrelle pryor you would be correct. Wow deep cut. Stead
of the day, that of the day, Here comes the
stat of.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
The daytaut of the day, stat of the dy, Here
comes the stat of the.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Did thank you Darius? Yeah? So watching Lamar the other
quarterback to do it? Was Michael Vick in twenty ten,
so rushing for at least one hundred yards in a
season opener. When it's all said and done, I got
Lamar Jackson at twenty seven. He's probably gonna rush for
(06:38):
eight thousand yards in his career. I mean, he's gonna
blow away Michael Vick. What is it, Michael Vick, Cam Newton,
Steve Young's in there, Russell Wilson Junior, the third. Am
I leaving out anybody? Pauline?
Speaker 6 (06:51):
Yeah, you got the list right, Mike Vick, Cam Newton,
Lamar Jackson is at fifty three hundred. He'll pass Cam
Newton probably in a month. Honestly, in a month. Russell Wilson,
Randa Cuttingham, and a bunch of retired guys.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
He's going to have six thousand yards by the end
of the season. He'll have a total six thousand.
Speaker 7 (07:09):
I mean it's.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
I don't know if he could get to ten thousand yards.
I don't know if the Ravens want him to get
to that many yards, but I don't think he can change.
Like you're watching now, he was way too aggressive for me.
When you're taking on tacklers, you're lower like we don't
need this, you know, it's hey, I admire it, like
Chris Collins were has said, you know, I kind of
(07:32):
admire it, but I don't want it, all right, you know,
the tough guy taken on. No, no, no, we don't
need that. We don't need that. But I thought they
were going to do a little bit more of the
option that Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson going down the
line pick your poison, and I'm hoping that we do
(07:52):
see that. It was nice to see Dereck Henry, you
know yet, but thirteen carries, I don't know. I got
to load him up a little bit more. And then
Isaiah Lively he's the go to guy. Now likely, I
should say Lively? Is there? Derek Lively? And then Isaiah Likely? Yeah.
But this guy, I remember seeing him at Coastal Carolina. Yeah,
(08:16):
who was the quarterback they had?
Speaker 6 (08:19):
Was the Grayson McCall?
Speaker 4 (08:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (08:21):
Yeah, maybe didn't he just Trent? Isn't he on NC State?
Speaker 8 (08:24):
Now?
Speaker 7 (08:24):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (08:25):
The tour continues. Yeah, he had long hair. I remember
like a Thursday night Coastal Carolina game. I remember seeing
this guy. I'm like, man, he's pretty athletic for a
big guy. But you know, late in the game, they
were going to him last drive, they were going to
him and then thought he had the touchdown. And he
had this to say after the game.
Speaker 7 (08:45):
Would you take away from a competitive game like that
against this team?
Speaker 9 (08:49):
I say, this is probably the worst game we're gonna
play all year, So this is the best that they
got good luck in the postseason.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
So that's Isaiah likely the Ravens tight end. You start
to look at these skill position players that the Ravens
have surrounded Lamar Jackson with, and you know, it's not
an impressive list. They've tried and then they've whiffed on
quite a few of these players. I think I do
have a list so supporting cast Lamar Jackson on offense
(09:20):
has had three skill position players who have made the
Pro Bowl that since twenty eighteen when Lamar got there,
Mark Andrews three times, Alan Ricard, who's a full back,
three times, and then Mark ingram As a thirty year
old running back. That's it. I can't count a full back.
(09:40):
But you can't, right, It's just different now, you know.
Speaker 6 (09:47):
Like no one says, remember those Alan Riccard years? Yeah,
Mark Jackson, Allen Card, Thunder and Lightning. Okay, but they did.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
They took a swing at Le'Veon Bell, des Bryant, Dashawn
Jack and Odell Beckham Junior, the Third, Devonte Freeman, Melvin
Gordon II and Latavius Murray. They're trying, they just haven't
done well. And now Derrick Henry, let's see if he
can put up some big numbers. They're certainly expecting him
(10:16):
to do so. But I'm watching the Ravens. That's never
a pretty offense. Like they don't they don't get into
a rhythm. It's just Lamar is choppy. I don't I
don't know how to describe it, like it's it just
feels like that's the best guy on the playground and
he's going to make a play. And like the rhythm
(10:37):
part of it. You see that with offenses, like oh boy,
they got it gone, and he's not afraid to pull
the ball down. And I could watch Chris Jones. They
could have put a camera on Chris Jones last night
and I would have watched that. He's fascinating. And I
remember I think Marvin asked me, well, what position does
he play? And I said, he's just a football player,
(10:58):
because he plays every position, you know, up front, all
he does is go, hey, I'm gonna I'm gonna go
over here. Hey, scoot out of the way. He's looking
for a mismatch, and uh, he's fun to watch he disrupts. Yes, yes, Marvin,
can Chris Jones be First Team All Pro at D
tackle and D N so do a JJ Watt? Correct?
(11:21):
Isn't that amazing? JJ Watt was a what Pro Bowl
player or All Pro player at two different positions in
the same year, high motor. You can play two positions
at the same time.
Speaker 7 (11:32):
Strength of two men.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Man, that's crazy. But but was it Pro Bowl or
All Pro that he was at two different positions? Marvin checking?
Speaker 10 (11:41):
Right?
Speaker 2 (11:41):
Okay, thank you, yes, Paulie.
Speaker 6 (11:43):
You know it's fascinating with stats that don't really match,
Like Chris Jones had no hits on the quarterback last night. Now,
if you look at that, he had two tackles and
no hits on a quarterback.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
That's it.
Speaker 6 (11:52):
He was in the backfield as much as Lamar Jackson was. Like,
the stats don't match his impact.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
Yeah, that's why you know, I'd like Hurries. I like
when you have somebody who's constantly putting press. That's why
I love Max Crosby. He's putting pressure on you constantly.
May not get the sack totals, but he's there all
the time. Yes, Marvin, All right?
Speaker 10 (12:12):
For J. J.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
Watt for his outstanding season? What would unanimously name the
first team All Pro defensive end and All Pro second
Team as a defensive tackle? Two spots?
Speaker 1 (12:24):
Selfish?
Speaker 2 (12:26):
All right? Seat and pull a question? What are we
gonna go with? First hour here?
Speaker 4 (12:31):
Uh? Well, let's see we have a we have two
options from Todd.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
Are you guys tired today? Like it's a it's one
of those good tireds.
Speaker 6 (12:39):
What it means to be punchy. Yeah, it's like you're
kind of giddy and fun and it's a great night.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
It's worse staying up for Yeah, I don't know if
I'm gonna last the entire three hours, but I'm gonna
do my best. Kind of have to, I think. No,
I don't, don't No, No, it doesn't have to do anything.
I don't, Todd, I have to I will. I will say, Todd,
it's Friday Fritzy, just letting people know. And you got
a few guests, we got pigs in a blanket like
(13:05):
this could be a lot of good things going on.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
Yeah, yeah, a lot of good things, all right. See
Smell's fantastic in here too. I don't know what then,
that's that the onions.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
That's the onions. Yeah, that's the chili that we're making
right now. Good grief. Okay, whole question, which one should.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
The NFL play games on Friday nights?
Speaker 2 (13:25):
No way or sure?
Speaker 4 (13:26):
Why not?
Speaker 2 (13:28):
Now? I haven't heard anybody talk about this. It used
to be Friday what we do. Fridays were off limits
because that was going to be high school football. High
school football, I believe, opens up tonight around the country.
Now it is on Peacock, so it is on a
streaming service. But I thought that now college has been
doing Friday like quietly been doing Fridays. But I always
(13:51):
thought that they were going to let high school stand
alone and have Fridays to themselves. But this is a
big game. I mean, this is a really big game,
and you've outsourced it to Brazil Packers Eagles man.
Speaker 6 (14:07):
Yes, Paul, there's actually a law about this. I had
heard there's sometime about antitrust law years ago. I found
it in Forbes magazine in nineteen sixty one. There is
this law called the Sports Broadcasting Act of sixty one,
when the NFL was expanding with the AFL no leagues.
No professional football games can take place on Friday nights
after six pm from the second weekend of September through December.
(14:31):
So this is the first weekend. So it appears the
NFL got around that thing, because I haven't heard it quoted,
but I don't think they could do this in week two.
Loophole Sports Broadcasting Act in nineteen sixty one. I'd love
to see that on CSP.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
Well, they couldn't have done that in sixty two. Then
it was it was specific for nineteen sixty one, right,
called the nineteen sixty one and.
Speaker 6 (14:52):
It's still in place.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
Okay, U Seaton, So that poll question, and uh, we
have that poll question.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
I have a preview of our threes pull question. Then
maybe we run all three hours. Who enjoys Los Angeles
more the starting quarterback for USC or an actor on
a hit TV show?
Speaker 2 (15:11):
So Matt Matt Lionard enjoyed Los Angeles. He did very much.
I would have stayed another year at USC if I
was him, even if he didn't have eligibility. What are
you doing here taking a gap year? I'm not leaving
graduate assistant coach. I don't know if Jerry Ferrara did
damage though he was on Entourage. I think he enjoyed
(15:34):
himself very much, but not Liner like maybe like Matt
was dating starlets. I don't know if Jerry was extras.
Jerry was dating.
Speaker 7 (15:47):
Extras on Entourage.
Speaker 6 (15:49):
I remember that show There's all yeah, pretty extras. Yeah,
I know, male and female. Yeah, just call covering all basis.
Speaker 11 (15:57):
Yes, And there's a lot of successful LA actors on
good shows or great shows, but there's only one USC quarterback.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
Well, back then, it was really a big deal to
be the USC quarterback, like you were Well, no, you
were competing for national championship. I'm not throwing shade at
Miller Moss or Caleb Williams. Sounds like no, but they
you were playing for national championships like and back then,
(16:24):
you know there was no NFL football.
Speaker 4 (16:26):
Dang, Miller.
Speaker 6 (16:30):
Miller Moss sounds like a law for them.
Speaker 5 (16:31):
Though.
Speaker 7 (16:32):
Yes, I'm gonna go to Miller.
Speaker 2 (16:33):
I'm gonna be represented by Miller Moss, not Miller Mass,
Paul Miller Moss. Get it done. Uh we ride? Yeah,
what's the what's the one about motorcycles?
Speaker 8 (16:48):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (16:48):
The one on the down the street.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
Here, Tentola and Trentola. What is it we ride?
Speaker 6 (16:54):
They actually say there was one that the one goes
I don't ride motorcycles, but I could protect you on yours.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
Oh no, no, this is the guy who's on the motorcycle.
We ride, So we know what it's like.
Speaker 4 (17:05):
Their whole business is like, we're motorcycle guys and we
represent motorcycle guys.
Speaker 11 (17:10):
Yeah, they could relate their extra centaive to it, since
they themselves.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
Are on to it.
Speaker 4 (17:15):
All right, it's gonna be Yeah, we just broke down
local law firms in the Connecticut.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Nobody's doing that. Carter Mario Yeah, and just kids yeah.
Speaker 11 (17:29):
And golf blow I know those billboards.
Speaker 4 (17:31):
Yeah, okay, AnyWho, we still haven't even gotten the toddspol
questions yet.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
All right, well, you know what, we'll do that after
the break. I got a gear up today. I might
have to have a caffeine blast.
Speaker 7 (17:42):
Come on, let's rally, Come on, come on, come on,
we get to do this.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
Come on. Okay, Okay, let's take a break. We'll talk
to Joel Klatt. He'll join us from ann Arbor. It's
Michigan and Texas. High noon coming up tomorrow. Back after this.

Speaker 2 (18:35):
Gonna settle on a poll question for hour one. Joel Klatt,
He'll be on the call for Fox Sports at noon tomorrow.
It'll be Michigan against Texas. Texas favored by seven, and
Joel will be with Gus Johnson on Fox Big Noon Kickoff.
He'll join us coming up in a couple of minutes.
By the way, you got rookie quarterbacks making their debuts
(18:55):
coming up this weekend. Here's something for you. The last
rookie quarterback to start and win Week one. It happened
in twenty eighteen. Rookie quarterback, first start, got the win
because the last let's see, rookie quarterbacks have lost seven
(19:18):
consecutive Week one starts. And then you got four quarterbacks.
You got Bonix, you got Caleb, you got Jaden and
so three rookie quarterbacks, is that right? Three starting? Three starting? Okay,
if you said Sam Darnald, you would be correct. He
(19:40):
led the Jets over the Lions. That was twenty eighteen,
and Sam Darnold making the start. The rookie JJ McCarthy
got injured, and he'll get that start, all right, So
rookie the rookie. We're gonna play Rookie of the Year
game a little later on today. I wonder if we're
gonna have recency bias with Xavier Worthy after what he
saw last night. It's one of those where you go
(20:03):
and Paulie brings this up a lot about targets. You know,
there can be catches, but then targets is really important.
And you saw that last night. Mark Andrews is a
three time All Pro tight end and I think he
had three targets. Now he is coming off an injury.
Isaiah likely. I think he had eleven targets, twelve targets
(20:24):
last night. Rashi Rice had nine targets last night. Those
are always like that dictates sort of the offense is
going to go in your direction or likely go in
your direction. Okay, see what I did with that, Ton,
very clever, Thank you, Ton Seeton. What's Todd's poll question
(20:44):
for hour one?
Speaker 4 (20:47):
Let's see Todd has after watching last night's game, I
most convinced that dot dot dot, Hm, the Chiefs will
return to the super Bowl. The Chiefs will three pet
The Ravens will never make it to the super Bowl
as long as Patrick Mahomes is Kansas City's quarterback. Yeah,
Lamar Jackson's style of play will never lead to a title. Wow,
(21:08):
multiple things can be true.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
Yes, that is true. This is a real What are
you most convinced? What's with the voice today?
Speaker 11 (21:19):
The question is I'm most convinced, but it is true
if several of these things could be all the same.
Speaker 2 (21:23):
Yes they can. You could say yesterday, it just feels
what is Kansas City? What's Lamar Jackson against Kansas City?
Is he wanted Sea like that? Yeah? That's tough. Yeah,
it just feels like there are certain players, and I've
talked about this in certain sports. They're great during the
regular season, but then when they get to the postseason,
(21:49):
the opposition catches up with him or figures them out
for one day, one game. His stats are really good.
He even said, you know, if my legs would have
been healthier, I would have you know, we would have
been eat in Kansas City. And I'm like, last year
he's talking about his legs, but I mean, I don't know.
It's just choppy. It can be really exciting, but it
(22:12):
is choppy. When I watch Lamar Joel Klatt, Fox Sports
lead college football analyst. He'll be on the call with
Gus big neon kickoff in ann Arbor, Texas in Michigan.
Let me ask you about Lamar Jackson in that style, Like,
how would you just if somebody didn't see Lamar, how
would you describe his style?
Speaker 7 (22:31):
Oh, gosh, that's a great question.
Speaker 3 (22:33):
I would probably I would describe his style as conflict.
He's constantly putting the defense in conflict because of his
ability to impact with his legs. Now, I've been a
big believer and I talk a lot with Daniel Jeremiah
about this when we lead up to the draft, you know,
because listen, I'm in the college game, so that style
(22:54):
in college is probably profitable, to be honest with you,
But as you go on, DJ and I like to
play this like confetti tests in the draft, and we
take a look at all the quarterbacks leading up into
the draft and we're like, Okay, close your eyes and
picture the confetti raging down. Can you picture him winning
a Super Bowl? His style of play, his personality, all
(23:15):
of the things that we try to evaluate in the
draft process. And with Lamar, there's one thing. There's one
thing that sticks out at times, which is, at some
point in the playoffs, And this goes for any player,
you're gonna have to as a quarterback, control the game
from the pocket. Now that doesn't mean that you can't
(23:37):
impact the game outside of the pocket, but at some
point you will have to control the game from the pocket.
And I think that to your point, regular season versus postseason,
there are times when when maybe that's lacking, you know,
But to be fair, it's like I don't study the
tape of those NFL playoff games. That's from afar, you know,
(23:57):
sitting there as a fan watching some of those games.
Speaker 2 (24:00):
All right, So you have the big game at noon,
it's going to be Texas in Michigan. Texas is favored
by seven. Does that point spread say more about Texas
or more about Michigan?
Speaker 3 (24:11):
Probably a little of both. To write both sides of
that fence. I think Texas looked really efficient and in
control and physical, and they looked like a team that
resembled what Alabama has been in the past, you know,
And that's kind of what Sark wants to do and
build a team that's versatile, can do a lot of things.
Play physical, play fast, all of the things that you
(24:32):
would need to go win a national championship. Meanwhile, I
think that we looked at what Michigan was as fifteen
to zero national champion, with guys that could take them
above their style and philosophy like Corum and McCarthy and
these guys, and then we watched them against Fresno State
and Dan. To me, it resembled a lot of the
twenty fifteen, sixteen early Harbaugh Michigan teams. Journeyman quarterback Jake
(24:56):
Rudoch remember him. He was a transfer from Iowa Wilton State,
was a quarterback back in sixteen. Those teams were good
and philosophically really sound, but they lacked some of the
pieces that could take them above their philosophy and their
exes and o's. That's what it looked like kind of
on on Saturday night against Fresno State, and I think
that's why you're seeing the line where it's at.
Speaker 2 (25:17):
Let's do the confetti test with quinn Ewers. Close your eyes.
Can you see quinn Ewers with confetti raining down upon
him this season?
Speaker 7 (25:27):
Whoa wait, wait, wait, which confetti?
Speaker 3 (25:28):
Are we talking about the many Lombardi Trophy confetti's that
somebody cuts out, which is incredible, or are we talking
about like the square college football confetti that's.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
Cheap, Yeah, the cheaper version. Okay, National Championship? Can you see?
Speaker 7 (25:44):
I can? I can.
Speaker 3 (25:45):
I think that this Texas team is very versatile. I
think that they are very there deep. They've got probably
I would say that, well, the most experienced offensive line
in the country. Certainly, they got four guys that have
started for the better part of three years up front
in front of him, and their most talented guy might
be the fifth that isn't one of those experienced guys.
(26:06):
I think that the only thing that is concerning for
Michigan is that they're having to replace Byron Murphy and
Trevandre Sweat. They're two defensive tackles, and you might be
thinking to yourself, like, well, what do you mean in
our game? In the college game, it's not necessarily about
your quarterback, although that's important. The national champion always as
an elite defensive interior defensive line that can control the game.
(26:31):
We saw that last year with Michigan, we saw the
two previous years with Georgia, and so Texas is going
to have to overcome losing those two guys.
Speaker 7 (26:39):
Might not be all about quinn.
Speaker 3 (26:40):
Ewers as much as it is that defense, which is
what I'm excited about for Saturday then, because that's exactly
where Michigan is going to robe and they're going.
Speaker 7 (26:49):
To try to soften up.
Speaker 3 (26:51):
That's their entire mo is to try to control the
game at the line of scrimmage, So that aspect of
Texas's team is going to be tested.
Speaker 2 (26:58):
I said after well the Monday, after watching USC play,
they won the perception, like the perception victory of the
weekend was USC because we saw them be tough, we
saw them play defense. We as opposed to the last
couple of years. I don't know how much of perception
victory counts. You know, it's still one win, but it
(27:21):
did feel like USC addressed a lot of the issues
that we've been waiting for them to address.
Speaker 7 (27:27):
Are they didn't hear more? Yeah? I think so.
Speaker 3 (27:30):
And I think to your point on two different fronts, Dan,
I think that there's you know, now, all of a sudden,
the Big Ten is really a five team race, not
a four team race. So all of a sudden, the
top end of the Big Ten looks much more difficult
for teams like penns State, Ohio State, Oregon in Michigan.
And then you have this, this this narrative that starts
and remember, you know, our sport is still subjective and
(27:53):
we're still going to put teams into this playoff even
though it's expanded through subjective measurements.
Speaker 7 (27:59):
And when you beat a.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
Team like LSU from that conference, the SEC, that's huge
not only for your program, but also for the conference
because those two teams coming into the season, USC and LSU.
Speaker 7 (28:10):
Were largely thought of.
Speaker 3 (28:13):
In a very similar spot within their conference maybe four, five, six,
right in that range. So if you can win those games,
it becomes really important from a narrative standpoint to see
how many teams your conference can get into the playoff
at the end of the season. So twofold on that,
and I thought that the defense played tremendous, didn't We
kind of forget in a very we are so man
(28:35):
our brains move so fast. It's a quick pay society.
Everyone's like, oh, man, Lincoln Riley can't coach. It's like
hold on time out. Yes he can, and he has
for the entirety of his career, and now all of
a sudden, if he gets a defense that can play
that tough, then I think the rest of the Big
Ten certainly was put on notice.
Speaker 2 (28:53):
What would what would be a successful season for Colorado?
Speaker 3 (28:57):
Oh gosh, that's a great question. Before last Thursday, I
would have said they could win eight or nine games.
After last Thursday, I'm less confident.
Speaker 7 (29:10):
And the reason is.
Speaker 3 (29:11):
Is, while they have elite players, I think they have
two players that might get selected in the top five
in the NFL draft, Travis Hunter and Shedior Sanders. Outside
of that, they tend to make the exact same mistakes
and play the exact same style that we saw even
early last year, and that growth hasn't really occurred. They
mismanaged the clock. They don't have a creative run game,
(29:33):
so they throw the ball constantly when they have to
rather than when they want to. If you wanted to
give them some kudos, you would say their run defense
was a lot better this year, in particularly against the
team even though they were FCS. But North Kota State
is I think all of us know that are sports fans.
They're a tough minded, run oriented program that's highly successful.
Speaker 7 (29:52):
But those things.
Speaker 3 (29:52):
About the clock management, the undisciplined play at times, in particular,
like a few of those penalties on third down. If
they do that against Nebraska, they're gonna get beat, maybe handily,
because Matt Rules built something pretty special at least I
think in Lincoln, in particular, with a freshman quarterback. If
Shodoor Sanders and Travis Hunter play elite football, they can
(30:13):
beat almost anybody on their schedule. But everything else has
to get better. So I think that a successful season
for Colorado right now is probably.
Speaker 7 (30:22):
A bowl game.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
Feels like this twelve team playoff is meant for Notre
Dame to be in there every single year. It was
almost I mean, this is TV. It's a TV show
and you want Notre Dame to host a playoff game.
It just feels like Notre Dame is I mean, are
you okay with that? Do you get the same feeling that, hey,
(30:45):
SEC is going to be represented, Big Ten's going to
be represented, Notre Dame's going to be in there, get
a couple of outliers.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
You know most likely they are. I'm really interested to
see what happens. Let me just like peer into the
future before I answer your question specific I peer into
the future. I just sense and feel within the next
four or five years, Notre Dame will have more of
a scheduling arrangement with a conference that will make their
(31:13):
schedule more difficult. So there's that, because this is what's
the it's not necessarily the problem of Notre Dame. I
think Notre Dame's really good. Marcus Freeman is a heck
of a coach obviously, and that defense looked elite, and
so I have no problem with Notre Dame being in
the playoff, And quite frankly, they probably will be ranked
(31:34):
higher than what their seed is. I think they're probably
going to be ranked in the top four because I
don't know who's going to beat them.
Speaker 7 (31:39):
On their schedule. The issue is their schedule.
Speaker 3 (31:42):
Their toughest game, at least before the season was probably
this road game at Texas A and M. Now it
looks like it's the road game at the end of
the year at USC. But between those two bookend games Dan,
with Florida State losing twice, I mean, it's like ten
straight scrimmages. I know that that sounds harsh, but like that,
(32:02):
that schedule, it's it's totally in their court. If they
want to play and hold their own standard, they'll be
undefeated facing USC and they're going to be in the playoff.
Speaker 2 (32:14):
Appalation State at Clemson tomorrow night. If Clemson loses tomorrow night,
could you repeat that real quick? You cut out for
a moment, Appalation State Clemson. If Clemson loses tomorrow night,
Oh my gosh, Oh.
Speaker 7 (32:34):
My gosh, don't do that to me.
Speaker 3 (32:37):
I can't do I can't even I can't comprehend. You
know what Clemson reminds me of Dan. They remind me
a lot, a lot of twenty ten Texas. Texas had
that six year run with elite level quarterback play Vince
(33:01):
Young to Colt McCoy. But what ended up happening is
is over those six years, the program's roster started to deteriorate,
but we didn't know it because Colt carried them, and
he carried them to that National championship game. He gets hurt,
they lose to Alabama, and we thought that Garrett Gilbert
was going to be like, well, he'll be fine because
he's a five star and you know, he's Texas's quarterback,
(33:23):
and they fell off the face of the planet, you know,
And it took him until last year really to kind
of like right the ship. The key was is that
Texas missed on recruiting a quarterback, and I think Clemson
has done the same now, Caid Klubnick. I'm hoping that
this turns around. But this is what happened with Deshaun
Watson to Trevor. Trevor Lawrence and at the end of
(33:45):
Trevor's tenure, yes, they made the National Championship game, but
he carried them packs that Ohio State team. He carried
them to that point. And you look at the draft
picks since he's left, and it's fallen off the face
of the planet.
Speaker 2 (33:58):
Just like Texas.
Speaker 3 (33:59):
Texas went like ten years without an offensive player draft
until last year and we're starting to see that with Clemson.
So to me, it's not about dabbling the transfer portal
or he's unwilling to do this or that. It's that
they've missed at quarterback. We didn't see the deterioration of
the roster like we didn't see it at Texas, and
I think that's the issue. And I tell you what,
(34:19):
this is not the game I would want to play
if I was Clemson after losing to Georgia app State,
like app State's going to be ready to play. Wouldn't
shock me if they if they beat Clemson. But at
the same time, I think that the Tigers, at least
I hope the Tigers write the ship for their sake.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
Tell Gus we sett alow have fun tomorrow. We'll be watching.
Thank you, great appearance, Joel.
Speaker 7 (34:40):
I appreciate it. Dan, have a good one.

though Asaiah likely Toe was just a bit outside and
(36:44):
uh Baltimore, Dan, they start to give me like Charger
vibes when they're playing Kansas City. Man, it's just it's
just not good.
Speaker 2 (36:54):
Thank you Buddha, and once again, happy birthday to Buddha yesterday. Yeah,
just and I know it's over a reaction Friday, but
we normally over react on Monday. But you're just the
offense did have a lot of yards, it's just choppy.
And is it dependable? That's what I always fall back
(37:15):
with when I watch the Ravens in the postseason. Can
you depend on things there? Because that's what happens when
you get to the postseason all else fails. Do you
still have that singular you know weapon? Do you have
a defense? Like you have to have something you go
we can win a game with our offense, we can
win a game with our defense. That's what happens in
(37:38):
the postseason. There are times when the offense doesn't do anything.
Quarterback throws three interceptions, four interceptions, but the defense plays great.
You win ugly. That's the expression. That's what I'm going
to want to see the Ravens regular season, I don't care.
Once again, there's so many these teams that Dallas Cowboys
regular season, I don't care. I want to see what
(38:00):
you do in the postseason. There's certain teams that were
waiting for them to have that big moment. Dallas can
go thirteen and four, it doesn't matter. It's what are
you going to do in a big moment? Baltimore you
can go thirteen and four. I want to see what
you do in a big moment. Now, we've seen that
before with the Chargers. We're like that Chargers and then
(38:23):
they get to the postseason and you go show me
what you can do. Can you be dependable? And that's
what will be my concern with Baltimore. They may not
lose another game, I'd still go, Okay, can I count
on them in the postseason? Andrew in Washington, Hi Andrew
good morning.
Speaker 5 (38:43):
Dan Dennez, Happy Meet Friday. I got a couple of
comments about last night's game, and then I had to
really go deep in my pocket first Saturday after you
took all the football ones. But I thought it was
ironic that Isaiah Lively was wearing diamond turf Airmax ninety
six is, which were known as Dion Standers signature shoe,
and he had a toe out. Anyway, Lamar Jackson, I
(39:06):
think you're correct, Lamar Jackson. He plays the playground game
and he calls a play that all the other team runs.
So while he's dancing around and going up and down
in the pocket and maybe taking off, the rest of
the team is actually playing the called play. And so
I think that's why it looks choppy, because it's like
two different songs playing at the same time on the radio,
(39:29):
and you're trying to go what's going on there, and
so they're just not in sync. By the way, the
stab of the day, I got to go to baseball
and Parker Meadows won the game for the Detroit Tigers
with a grand slam in the ninth inning on a
full count last night. Now, his grand slam was hit
off of one hundred point seven mile an hour baseball. Now,
(39:50):
according to the Mothership, that is the second fastest home
run hit by Detroit Tiger off of a fastball since
two thousand and eight, when pitch trucking was started. So
that's your staturs day, the fastest.
Speaker 2 (40:08):
No, there's certain stats, Andrew that I just think are stupid,
Like that's where you go, Okay, how can we do
a deep dive on this? All I know is Parker
Meadows hit a grand slam on a full count with
two ounce in the ninth inning and gave the Tigers
a four to three win over the Padres. I don't
need to know that he hit it off one hundred
mile an hour fastball and that's the second fastest pitch
(40:30):
a Tiger has ever homered off since two thousand and eight. No, no, no, no,
it's not a stat of the day. I don't know.
Speaker 7 (40:42):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
If it was that funny, Todd got a big laugh.
Speaker 7 (40:45):
Parker Meadows can't lose.
Speaker 2 (40:46):
Yeah, yeah, I don't need them. By the way, watching
the game with somebody who doesn't know about the dynamic kickoff,
the new dynamic kickoff, that was interesting. We're like, wait
a minute, what are they doing here With this formation.
Only one was returned, but okay, I'm fine with it.
I just need the possibility of a kick being returned.
(41:08):
We didn't even have that in previous couple of years.
