thanks to the city of Cincinnati rolling out the red carpet.
Gave me a proclamation too. Came in for a book
signing and had a great turnout. Great to see a
lot of members of our audience that showed up. There.
A lot of people had T shirts on that related
(00:46):
to the show. We had one for Fritzie Marvin's Plums.
We had a couple other bandwagon ones just Dan Patrick
Show Moonshine, Tailgate Moonshine t shirts there. So thank you
for coming out. Sign up for the DP Show newsletter
and it's really easy to do. You go to Danpatrick

dot com, put in your email address in the box
that slides out bottom right. Corner. Get all the details
on the next Moonshine drop and it comes out every
day Monday through Friday at sixth Eastern. Stat of the
Day has always brought you by Panini America, the official
trading cards of the Dan Patrick Show Best and Worst
of the Weekend, as we always do every Monday, what
(01:28):
you saw that you liked and you didn't like. We
touched on a variety of things from the first hour.
Colorado now going to Oregon, and it might surprise you
who's favored and by how many. Oregon is favored by
more than three touchdowns against Colorado, And as Dion might say,
you believe Las Vegas doesn't because Las Vegas doesn't get
(01:51):
caught up in a storyline. Their job is to set
the line. And right now might be close to twenty
three point favorite for the Oregon Ducks. And Colorado will
be without Travis Hunter, their star player, who got injured
in that win, the double overtime win against Colorado State.
The two and O teams Ravens forty nine, Ers, Cowboys,
(02:13):
Dolphins Okay, Buccaneers Falcons hmm okay, I thought the Buccaneers
were going to be in a rebuild mode. Here Baker Mayfield.
You know, Baker Mayfield might have that rejuvenation that we
saw with Ryan Tannehill when Tannehill washed out with the Dolphins,
end up going to Tennessee and then they you know,
became a good quarterback, serviceable quarterback. The Falcons. I love
(02:37):
the offense. They were fun. Jordan Love with a big
mistake on that fourth down call and fourth and what
two going for a quarterback sneak. He's the only one
who moved the offensive line didn't pick up on whatever
cadence that he changed too, and that cost him. But
the Falcons got in field goal range and ended up
winning that game. Saints and the Panthers, Browns and the
(03:00):
Dealers coming up tonight. If you like comebacks, you certainly
had that in a variety of games. You had Atlanta
down twelve, Giants down twenty one, Tennessee down eleven, Washington
down eighteen. Those were teams that, you know, four teams
that came back to win yesterday. So the Giants, they
(03:22):
overcame the twenty one point third quarter deficit. The Commanders
were down eighteen in the second quarter against the Denver Broncos.
Falcons were down twelve in the fourth quarter. Tennessee was
down eleven in the first half, came back to beat
the Chargers and Seahawks. Seahawks with a win against Denver.
So you had some pretty good comebacks there, and they're
(03:44):
all close games. You got these one score games eight,
seven to seven to three. D P Show operator Tyler
is standing by. Last night it was the Dolphins over
the Patriots, and here's Tyreek Hill, who didn't enjoy his
trip to New England.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Now felt it felt tremendous.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Man.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
Those those fans are you know, some of the worst
fans in the in the NFL, and I'm a stand
on that, man, because they are real nasty and some
of the things that they were saying wasn't you know,
I wouldn't say in church. So yeah, it felt great
to wave good by to the fans. And I'll do
it again mine.
Speaker 5 (04:23):
Okay, all right, yeah, Mark, But how much stuff at
a football game can you repeat in church?
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Uh? Probably not too much. I accidentally said Seahawks over Denver,
Seahawks over Detroit.
Speaker 6 (04:42):
I like that.
Speaker 7 (04:42):
Even Boston players talk about how terrible the fans are there.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
Yeah, it's their home crowd and they're like, these people
are terrible. Here is the Patriots quarterback Mac Jones.
Speaker 8 (04:52):
The biggest thing is just we're close. We drove the
ball pretty well, I just didn't get it in.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
You know.
Speaker 8 (04:58):
Last week we were behind and kind of scort some touchdowns,
you know, And if we can combine those two things,
move the ball and then get it in the red zone,
I think everyone would be smiling right now. So that's
the biggest thing.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
It always seems like somebody's kid came into the press conference.
Whenever he sits down, it's like, hey, get out of here,
go back there and pick up those towels.
Speaker 9 (05:22):
Like he just sort of goes in and it just almost,
I don't know, yeah, kind of almost. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (05:29):
Mark, he's the quarterback version of Mike McDaniel. Like when
you hear him talk, you're not like, oh, let's go,
it's okay, I'm just giving my opinion.
Speaker 9 (05:38):
Yeah, just just do yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Mike McDaniel's becoming an entertainer because he was entertaining when
they weren't really winning yet, and now that they're winning
and handling people, he's he's just letting it out there,
running off the field with the cameras. Yesterday for every
press conference is it's like a stand up special.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
Yeah, there's something with his delivery. He's got that dead
pen delivery, like Stephen Wright does. Yes, give me a
Stephen right Ton.
Speaker 10 (06:07):
I bought some batteries but they weren't included, so how
to buy them again? It's a small world. But I
wouldn't want to paint it.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Didn't he do one?
Speaker 9 (06:17):
Where I was born cincerean section, So I don't leave
the house through the door.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
I go through the window.
Speaker 7 (06:27):
My favorite joke of his is when he said I
once had a job at a fire hydrant making plant
or something. It was a great job, but there was
nowhere to park.
Speaker 11 (06:41):
That is good.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
So two games coming up tonight will get phone calls
best and worst to the weekend? Who had a bad win?
Bad win? Over the weekend? Alabama had a bad win,
horrible Colorado. They won in dramatic fashion, but if you
look at they were favored by twenty four, it's not
(07:04):
a bad win. It's not a great win. Who else
had a bad win?
Speaker 3 (07:10):
Yeah, point, I'll throw out Texas. I don't think a
lot of people watched Texas versus Wyoming. It was a
tie game going to the fourth quarter. Texas has built
up all this good will beating Alabama. They could undone
it in all in one weekend.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
Texas is down number three in the country. Yeah, Alabama's thirteen.
By the way. The Premier League, the biggest rivalries play
out live. It'll be Arsenal and Tottenham coming up this Sunday.
Next Sunday, North London, Darby. Yes, it is Emirates Stadium.
(07:43):
That'll be at nine am Eastern streaming only on Peacock.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
Did the Colts have a bad win? They lost their
starting quarterback concussion. That's not good and it shows that
they're you know, good backup.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
Yeah. Yeah, and Richardson is a thing. But you know
when we was a touchdown, nobody picked up on his head,
you know, snapping back and hitting the turf. He jumps
up and then all of a sudden you realize that
he needed to go into concussion protocol. All right, anybody
else have who had a good loss?
Speaker 12 (08:17):
Oh, the Lions. The Lions could have could have won
that one.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
That was a good loss. Yeah, because you're the Lions
now it's changing. You don't have to wear a bag.
You're supposed to win. Yeah, they you gotta win that game.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
Their offense look great, golf lip great except for one
throw and it was.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
And he doesn't throw interceptions?
Speaker 7 (08:37):
Right, Is there a Broncos? That's that was pretty close?
That was so that's a that's a good loss. Maybe
I said a terrible loss.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
You're at home.
Speaker 6 (08:53):
Oh yeah, that's true.
Speaker 10 (08:54):
If there wasn't twenty one to three Denver at one point, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
You were dominating.
Speaker 5 (08:58):
Yeah, Mark, going back to bad losses, the Jaguars bad
loss four times in the red zone.
Speaker 6 (09:07):
Yeah, you know who had a bad win? Did you
already say the Giants?
Speaker 1 (09:10):
Well yeah, I said they have no business sell out.
Speaker 7 (09:13):
Yeah that's right. Yeah, sorry I missed that. You can't
you're not allowed to celebrate that win. If I'm as
soon as they get back in the locker room after
that win, I'm like, everybody shut up.
Speaker 1 (09:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (09:22):
How about the Packers?
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Jordan Love six touchdowns two games, no picks, wasn't perfect.
They without their star running back.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
But they lost.
Speaker 12 (09:30):
I'm saying good loss.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
If I'm a Packer fan, I'm feeling after two games,
when you don't know what Jordan Love's gonna be for
three years, you got to feel pretty good about him.
Speaker 7 (09:38):
Specifically because it looks like it's gonna work. Yeah, it
looks like it's gonna work. Yeah, all right, we might
have a guy here.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
The Giants allowed sixty points before scoring their first points
of the season.
Speaker 12 (09:54):
They're standbagging people, They're getting people over confident.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
That's the most point that has been allowed by team
before scoring their first points since nineteen seventy eight, when
the Colts surrendered eighty six points before scoring their first points.
Speaker 13 (10:08):
Stat of the day, out of the day, that best
stat of the day.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
Stat of the.
Speaker 13 (10:14):
Day here comes that what stat of the day?
Speaker 1 (10:21):
Alabama beat Florida, but dropped to number thirteen in the
rankings South Florida. This marks the first time Alabama Alabama's
been outside the top ten since September of twenty fifteen.
That's the streak of one hundred and twenty eight weeks.
Second longest streak Miami went one hundred and thirty seven
(10:41):
weeks nineteen eighty five to nineteen ninety three, where they
were in the top ten. Couple of phone calls here,
our good buddy Ross Tucker was on the call with
the Patriots and the Dolphins. He'll join us coming up
here in a little bit Gus in La. Good morning, Gus.
What's on your mind today?
Speaker 11 (10:58):
Good morning Patrick, Hope you and the boys had a
great weekend. Worst of the Weekend Colorado State. I firmly
believe that Colorado State actually had that game won. I
mean they were winning the whole game, even with playing
the most undisciplined football I've ever seen in my life.
That was the worst.
Speaker 14 (11:18):
I mean, seventeen penalties for one hundred and eighty two yards?
Are you kidding me? And you start to go to
double overtime to you know, to beat them as Colorado.
Come on, now, you can't do that. Number eleven should
have been banned. There has to be a re like,
like another revision of that rule because he took him
out of the game. He took him to the hospital
with that hit. You can't have that, man, you know,
(11:40):
it's terrible, it's ugly. Colorado. You played yourself.
Speaker 11 (11:43):
You lost. Best of the weekend, my Dodgers winning the division.
Let's go back to March. Everybody. San Diego Slam Diego.
Oh my god, the baseball gods are gonna be raining.
And now San Diego is sitting there like, do we
go to Cabo or Ken Coomb for our vacation due.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
What do we do?
Speaker 11 (12:03):
You boys have a great week.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
Thank you guys, Thank you gus. Four shutout innings Saturday
for Clayton kershaw Is ERA at two point four eight
is the lowest in the Major League since nineteen eighteen.
Speaker 13 (12:17):
Stat of the Day up to the day, that best
s oat of the day, stat of the day? Here
comes that what stat of the day?
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Sean and Florida Sean, good morning, Best and worst of
the weekend?
Speaker 15 (12:34):
Good morning day, Good morning Danettes. I got two best
of the weekend and they sent around two of the
dan Nettes. A couple of weeks ago, Pauli said the
Bucks were looking to rebuild with one of the best
linebackers and some of the best wide receiver duo in
the game. And I thought it only fitting after we
beat his Bears to call in and say to and O, baby,
(12:56):
and we're not going nowhere. And my other best of
the weekend is when the Commander's cord that touchdown to
take the lead back from the Broncos. I just pictured
Fritzy's face and what it looked like in my house,
and I just started cracking up laughing, and my daughters
didn't know I was laughing about. I tried to explain
it to them, but I just wanted to tell you, guys,
I appreciate you. I've been watching me for about ten
(13:18):
years now, I since you grew up with you on ESPN,
and I appreciate everything you guys do.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
Thank you, Sean, Thank you shocking up, laughing at the misery,
thinking of your face. I didn't think of you when
you had the hail Mary, and then they completed it,
and I just wondered, they're not going to get the
two point conversion.
Speaker 11 (13:34):
I was.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
I was sure of that.
Speaker 10 (13:36):
I didn't get excited at all about that. I was like, wow,
look at that. They're going to prolonged the misery and
definitely not get the two point of it.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
Wait, you didn't jump up.
Speaker 10 (13:43):
I did not. I actually I've just seen the show
too many times.
Speaker 16 (13:45):
I'm like, all right, this is very cool and wild
and unique that that just happened.
Speaker 10 (13:49):
But that means they're not going to get the two
point of it.
Speaker 7 (13:51):
Yeah, yeah, See, I was positive they were getting the
two point conversion. Russ got them right up to the line.
They didn't waste any time. I thought for sure they
were going to punch it in the did yell.
Speaker 10 (14:00):
Of course they didn't call passive affelds. I'm not giving
them one more chance to get the two.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
And I'm watching the Buccaneers against the Bears once again.
All the love preseason with the Bears, I didn't get it.
I think it was wishful reporting that people wanted to
see justin fields and what he's still young quarterbacks hold
the ball forever. And you saw that yesterday. You got
(14:27):
sacks six times. There are times when there were plays,
there were players who were open, and he hold and
hold and hold. If you want to be a legitimate
quarterback in the NFL, you have to have those reads.
Get rid of the ball. This isn't Ohio State.
Speaker 9 (14:46):
This.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
You just can't make things happen all the time. And
you saw that yesterday. Those are mistakes. You know, he's
what three years in now you got you got him.
There has to be that progression, that evolution of understanding.
And I'm watching going who's helping him and is he listening?
(15:09):
Whoever's helping him? Quick reads, get the ball out, don't
hold it and he held it a couple of times,
got sacks six times.
Speaker 3 (15:18):
Yeah, the good news he took a lot of people's
advice justin fields, and he's running the ball less, but
he's also passing the ball less, which is not what
we wanted. Last year he covered up the passing stuff
with all the running highlights, and now he's trying to
stay in the pocket and it's he's being exposed as
a pocket.
Speaker 7 (15:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
Well there is some good news though, if you're a
Bear fan, if you want to say, they don't they
didn't sign him to a twhundred million dollar contract now yet, Yeah, and.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
They hopefully they don't do. You know what happened in Arizona.
Speaker 12 (15:46):
They can get out.
Speaker 3 (15:47):
They have two first round draft picks that should be
both in the top six or seven.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
Brent in Alabama, Hi, Brent, what's on your mind?
Speaker 17 (15:56):
Hey all, good morning. Worst of the weekend, Travis Hunter.
That was a cheap shot. And if you can't throw
that Colorado State player out you I think the coach
has to bench him. I mean that was just egregious.
Feel bad for Travis. Best of the weekend, My Alabama
Crimson Tide, Nick Saban. Now we know for a fact
(16:20):
that Tommy Reese is the problem. It's not the quarterback.
Three different quarterbacks, one of whom was not even our recruit.
For all three of them to look that bad, not
just them, but the entire offense, the offensive line, the
running backs, missing blocks, bad snaps, you name it. It's
got to be Tommy Reese, and either he's got to
(16:42):
be let go or there's got to be some pretty
big discussions this week or the oldness game is going
to get ugly. I can't believe we opened up as
an eleven and a half paint favorite against Ole Miss.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
Yeah. You know, Tommy Reese was at Notre Dame and
then went to Alabama. He's the offensive coordinator there. I
don't know if these quarterbacks are that good. I know
that because they go to Alabama. You know, well, they
got to be, you know, the four star, five star,
I get that, including a transfer from Notre Dame. I
don't see it. So you can say it's the play calling,
(17:15):
and that certainly has to be a factor here, but
it just they don't seem like they have those dynamic
weapons that they normally have where you go, oh my god.
You know, when Tua was there, you add three first
round draft picks at wide receiver, running back, your offensive line.
(17:37):
When Mac Jones was there, when Jalen Hurts was there,
Bryce Young was there. You don't have that right now.
You don't have that kind of talent at quarterback either.
All right, we'll take a break. We'll talk to our
good buddy Ross Tucker and he'll join us next year
on the Dan Patrick Show. It's not a question of if,

(19:28):
hour two Seaton O counter.
Speaker 7 (19:31):
Well, Dan our one we had up there which is
more real Alabama's struggles or Colorado's success? And right now
we've got Alabama struggles still at sixty six percent.
Speaker 1 (19:46):
So the audience feels like that's going to be more
sustainable that Alabama's going to struggle.
Speaker 7 (19:51):
Alabama's going to continue to struggle through this year rather
than Colorado's going to continue to win.
Speaker 3 (19:55):
Okay, yeah, pauling Alabama struggles sounds like a cool name
for a country band.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
Ladies and gentlemen. Alabama struggles, Alabama shaks Yeah. Ross Tucker
host of the Ross Tucker Football Podcast. He can be
found on social media at Ross Tucker NFL. He was
working last night Dolphins and the Patriots, and he joins
his courtesy of DraftKings. Good morning, Good morning Ross. How
are you, buddy?
Speaker 18 (20:21):
Morning Dan, I'm doing fantastic about yourself.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
Well great, you know it's a football Monday overreaction. What
is the over reaction today that you would caution people against.
Speaker 18 (20:34):
Well, I think probably going too far down the road
with some of the zero to two teams. I do
think there are some concerns with the Cincinnati Bengals or
even the Chargers, because it feels like the Chargers are
the same team, just a different year. But I think,
especially now with a seventeen game slate, I think it's
(20:54):
a little bit too early to start to throw out
all those stats and all those numbers and make it
seemed like those teams are done. I know people still
think they have a chance to make the playoffs and
all that, but oh to two doesn't feel as punitive
as it used to.
Speaker 1 (21:09):
All right, let me run down the over and two
teams right now. You tell me this team will make
the playoffs. Bears, Bengals, Broncos, Cardinals, Chargers, Patriots, Texans, Vikings.
Speaker 2 (21:35):
Is that it?
Speaker 1 (21:36):
Any of those gonna make the playoffs?
Speaker 18 (21:40):
I'll say the Bengals will make the playoffs. I'd be
surprised if they didn't. The only other team I think
out of that group that has a.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
Chance is the Chargers.
Speaker 18 (21:49):
But it's unbelievable, Dan and I tweeted this yesterday. I
feel like the Chargers every single game is the same game?
Speaker 2 (21:59):
Is it ever?
Speaker 18 (22:00):
The two minute warning of the Chargers game, and whoever
has the ball is down one score and they're driving
to try to win the game. And what's curious to me,
Dan about the Chargers is they.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
Don't win their fair share of those.
Speaker 18 (22:14):
So I don't know how much of that's Brandon Staley,
how much of that's Justin Herbert. You know, we all
love Justin Herbert. We all think he's a fantastic player.
We talk about him as a top five quarterback. But
these first two games, he's had six drives I think
in the fourth quarter where they could either have taken
a two score lead to kind of put the game away,
(22:37):
or when they were trailing, he could have led.
Speaker 2 (22:39):
Them to the game winning score. And he hasn't been
able to do it.
Speaker 18 (22:43):
And I think he's awesome, and I probably would blame
Staley more for these close losses than Herbert, but still
not a good look. Right, So, you know, it feels
like when you're in those situations and you watch Mahomes,
it feels like he always gets it done. Dan, it
feels like certain guys either always get it done or
have a high likelihood of getting it done. Herberts is
not one of those guys for whatever reason.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
Yeah, But are you siding with the coaches to blame
more than the quarterback or the other way around.
Speaker 18 (23:10):
With the Chargers, I'm going to put more blame on
Brandon Staley. Yeah, I mean they've had some curious decisions.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
You know what's fascinating to me about him? Dan?
Speaker 18 (23:21):
Two years ago, Okay, all of the analytics folks, all
of the young people, they were loving Brandon Staley because
every decision he made was based on you know, expected
points added or win probability. He went straight by the numbers, right,
And I don't know if he got gun shy. I
(23:41):
don't know if he lost his stinger or his confidence.
But I'm watching the game against the Titans. They're like
at the forty two yard line, fourth and one or something,
and he punts it. I'm always a little and you
can say maybe he learned from prior mistakes, but I'm
always a little bit skeptical of coaches who it seems
like have really changed their philosophy, Like why did he change?
(24:02):
And to me, the most likely scenario there is he
was tired of getting criticized.
Speaker 2 (24:08):
For being different.
Speaker 18 (24:09):
So if he's going to go down, he'd rather be
conservative and not have people say, well, he's too new aged,
he's too going with the analytics too much.
Speaker 1 (24:18):
Yeah, I know that we get caught up in this
where these new coaches new philosophy. Then all of a sudden,
now it feels like you have a coach who's coaching
for his job, and now you get a little more
conservative there. You know, Mike McDaniel, he's a guy that's quirky, different.
You saw this last night with his offense, and that's
(24:38):
a great offense there. But is he an analytics guy
similar to how Stalely is and some you know a
few other coaches.
Speaker 18 (24:47):
Well, he certainly understands, you know, the mathematics of some
of the decision making that he undergoes. Although you know,
I thought the fifty five yard field goal was a
surprising decision by him. I mean, I would have thought
that he would go for it in that situation late
in the game. The kick wasn't even closed, which, by
(25:07):
the way, Dan, I am convinced that Jason Sanders hooked
that ball to the left because the Patriots had that
kids schooler coming off the edge again from the right,
the same way he had blocked.
Speaker 2 (25:20):
The first field goal with the coolest field.
Speaker 18 (25:23):
Goal block technique I've ever seen.
Speaker 2 (25:25):
I think we're going to see more teams.
Speaker 18 (25:27):
Do that, not just to block it, but it's just
distracting for the kicker, right, It's like those guys are
so locked.
Speaker 2 (25:34):
In and now you have a guy running towards you
from your peripheral vision.
Speaker 18 (25:40):
I'm convinced that that's part of the reason why Sanders
hooked it the way he did.
Speaker 1 (25:44):
Well, I think he surprised the Dolphins with that, and
then I think after that, you know, teams are going
to be aware of a guy who is moving and
then you just got to chip him. But I'm waiting
for the NFL to go, Nope, that's that's illegal. We're
not going to allow that in more. But it was
a great play by the Patriots to block the kick.
(26:05):
We're talking to Ross Tucker Westwood, one CBS Sports, NFL
and college football analyst joining us on behalf of Giraftkings. Well,
the Dolphins. I think we're waiting to see can the
defense be up to the task that the offense is
with the Dolphins. How would you handicap what you saw
with the Dolphins and how sustainable it is?
Speaker 18 (26:25):
Yeah, So I think Dan, they've been the most impressive
team in the AFC so far this season. I mean,
I know we all come into the year and you
talk about the Chiefs and the Bengals and the Bills,
But for the Dolphins to do what they did two
and zero on the road at pretty solid football teams
with the Chargers and the Patriots, and I think Dan,
(26:46):
it's the way that they did it right. So they
threw the ball all over the field against the Chargers.
We all know that it was awesome to go to
New England now and Belichick does a good job taking
away Tyreek Hill. So the Dolphins run the ball as
much as they did with Mostert and then play really
good defense on the other side of the ball. I mean,
(27:07):
you're already seeing the impact of Vic Fangio. They didn't
even have Jalen Phillips, who's probably their best edge rusher
for that game last night, and they still held the
Patriots to only seventeen points.
Speaker 2 (27:19):
The Patriots, you know, they really.
Speaker 18 (27:21):
Have their own issues, but I do think that was
a highly encouraging performance by the Dolphins. Defensively, they forced
a couple turnovers, and right now, I mean, if you're
doing AFC power rankings, I think it's hard not to
have the Dolphins number one out of that group.
Speaker 1 (27:36):
Help me understand the logic of the Jets against the
Cowboys with Zach Wilson as your quarterback, and yes, you
have a wonderful wide receiver, but you have two good
running backs, and I thought the best way to neutralize
Dallas and Micah Parsons would be to run the football.
How do you explain them running eleven times.
Speaker 18 (27:54):
Well, I think part of that is they didn't have
early success, but I don't care.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
I'm with you, Dan.
Speaker 18 (28:01):
I mean, we've now seen enough of Zach Wilson, and
we saw him yesterday. Honestly, the best thing he does
right now is run. I mean, he ran for a
bunch of yards, ran for some first downs, which helped
the Jets.
Speaker 2 (28:14):
But that's I think.
Speaker 18 (28:15):
The biggest storyline today in my mind, Dan, in the
NFL is one are the Jets going to really do
at quarterback?
Speaker 1 (28:22):
I mean, but you trying to trade for somebody in
the next two weeks that let's say, let's say the
Vikings lose at home, Chargers are in Minnesota, Like, at
what point do you say, all right, what will you
give us for our starting quarterback here? I mean, I
know they have to come in and learn the offense,
but are they going to stay with Zach Wilson, maybe
(28:44):
get a backup, a veteran backup, and they're going to
go into battle every week like this?
Speaker 18 (28:51):
So I don't know that they're gonna give up the
draft choices and the money for a guy like Kirk
Cousins of that caliber to try to make a big
swing like that, But they're going to bring somebody else in,
and I would think that they would bring somebody else
in this week because it might take that guy a
week or two to get ready, right, and you don't
(29:14):
want to wait too long. I mean, they play the
Patriots in the next game. You don't want to wait
so long that you're putting whoever you bring in. I
don't know, case Keenum, name your favorite backup quarterback out
there that they could bring in.
Speaker 2 (29:28):
Who's just steady Dan.
Speaker 18 (29:30):
It just doesn't look to me like Zach Wilson is
comfortable that.
Speaker 2 (29:34):
He believes what he's seeing.
Speaker 18 (29:36):
They need a guy in there that can just make
the layups and not turn the football over. They don't
need highlight real stuff. And I think they wanted to
give it a week with Zach Wilson. Well now we
saw it, so I think either today or tomorrow, I
think the longer the Jets go before they give themselves
another optional quarterback, the more of a disservice they're really doing.
Speaker 2 (29:58):
That entire team.
Speaker 1 (30:01):
That Dallas defense is real, but that's because you start
with Micah Parsons. Does he get the Lawrence Taylor treatment
now with offensive coordinators here.
Speaker 18 (30:13):
Yeah, I mean he already is and he's still producing,
which is incredible. I mean, he is a phenomenal, phenomenal
football player. His change of direction, his lateral agility, his
closing speed.
Speaker 2 (30:29):
I mean, he's probably his Look.
Speaker 18 (30:31):
We've had some unbelievable guys, Von Miller's and Derek you know,
there's all kinds of guys, but he is as dominant
of a guy as we've seen.
Speaker 2 (30:39):
In a long long time.
Speaker 18 (30:41):
Three games into or a couple of games into here,
his second year in or third year in the NFL,
just extremely impressive. What I like about what dan Quinn does.
Dan he's moving them around right, and they're running stunts.
If you just line them up in the same place
every time, teams are going to help that way every time.
So the fact that they're moving him around and getting
(31:02):
him involved in stunts that allow him to get freed
up a little bit more is very very smart. He
needs to be like a where's Waldo guy so that
the offense doesn't know where he is they can chip
or slide or whatever.
Speaker 1 (31:15):
I know that there's wishful reporting with Colorado with Dion,
I don't know how good they are. Colorado State's not
good Nebraska's not good, and they did beat TCU, and
they're a three touchdown underdog against Oregon. Probably would be similar,
I guess against the USC the followingly. But how much
(31:37):
of this do you think is sustainable this year? With
Dion Colorado?
Speaker 18 (31:43):
I think they're going to struggle the next couple of weeks.
I heard the poll question, and I think it's I
think Alabama will do a better job of fighting through
their struggles than Colorado will continue to have success, especially
with Travis Hunter being hurt and out for a couple
of weeks. You know, I don't know that that was
a great TCU team that they beat. It's a terrific story.
(32:08):
Colorado has been terrible forever. They have a good team,
but they really haven't beat a top twenty caliber team.
There's a reason why they're huge underdogs against Oregon. I
would imagine they will be as well against USC. If
they can hang with those teams and win one of
those games, I would be very, very impressed. He's done
(32:29):
a fantastic job, but I don't think they're at that
level yet. I mean, that would be unbelievable. They right down,
I mean, you're talking about top ten teams. I don't
think Colorado is a top ten team yet.
Speaker 1 (32:39):
Good to talk to you as always, Ross, Where are
you off to next weekend?

Speaker 1 (35:09):
Saturday, the Ohio State Buckeyes are headed to South Bend
take on the Fighting Irish and Notre Dame. That's in primetime.
That'll be Saturday night. By the way, I was reading
something about how they came up with the Ohio State
and I think that there were and I'm going off
(35:29):
memory here, that you had maybe another university in Ohio,
in Columbus, and they wanted to differentiate between the two,
and then I think it was, you know, like Ohio
State Agriculture something like that, and then that's when they
came up. And the the has been around for a
long long time, hundred years. I think that the Ohio
(35:53):
State University, and it felt like it was something that
just happened. But then you had these players when they'd
be introduced on Sunday Night football, they'd go the Ohio
State and then you'll get some of these other guys
who go to other colleges. They're like the Utah Utes
and it's like, no, not the same, Yeah, Paulie.
Speaker 3 (36:11):
Yeah, they did some research on it. According to the
University Library at the Ohio State University, back in eighty six,
the new university's logo was introduced to go away from
the OSU symbol because there was Oregon State, Oklahoma State.
Speaker 12 (36:23):
They were trying to differentiate themselves, and in.
Speaker 3 (36:28):
The seventy seven that's when they kind of started going
with it locally. The legislation back in eighteen seventy seven
in the Board of Trustees minutes wanted it called Ohio
State Agricultural Mechanical College, but it'll be known as the
Ohio State University. That was actually declared in eighteen seventy eight.
They brought it back in the nineteen seventies to make
(36:48):
it a real thing.
Speaker 1 (36:49):
Yeah, the Ohio State been around a long long time,
but the emphasis really just started a few decades ago.
All right, just go around the best and worst of
the weekend. Toddle'll start with you.
Speaker 16 (37:02):
My best of the weekend, although was against a not
particularly good Michigan State team, giving it to Washington Husky's
quarterback Michael Pennix Junior four hundred and seventy three yards
four tds forty one to seven routes in East Lansing.
Speaker 10 (37:13):
Worst. We mentioned it already a few times.
Speaker 16 (37:15):
Colorado State nickelback Aiden Hector's late hit out of bounce
on the Buffalo's Travis Hunter in the second quarter taken
to a hospital, missing at least a few weeks.
Speaker 1 (37:23):
I ain't seat O'Connor.
Speaker 7 (37:25):
My best of the weekend is Gino Smith talk about
a crazy career arc that this fella is having. But
the more success that I can find him having, the
better it is. It's tremendously entertaining watching this guy play well.
It has nothing to do with you both going to
West Virginia. I'm sure that that's possibly part of it. However,
(37:45):
you do have to admit that all of a sudden
his resurgence and then getting paid and then continuing to
play pretty well. It's pretty fascinating. Is There's not a
lot of quarterbacks who have been able to do that?
Speaker 1 (37:55):
Okay, stranger career art Kurt Orner Gino Smith, well, gotta
be Kurt.
Speaker 7 (38:05):
Yeah, I mean he was backing groceries, know.
Speaker 1 (38:08):
That, yes he was. He was bagging groceries, y, yes
he was. And then Arena League and then you injury
all of a sudden MVP Super Bowl and then when
he goes to back up Eli. That's what actually I
think he started in Green Bay Kurt was Was he
a fourth string quarterback Craving? Yeah, he practiced squad quarterback
(38:30):
with Farv there. But like that's the that's the craziest
career arc that I can think of. And then to
come back and then you take Arizona to the super
Bowl and nearly win it. Yeah, Paul, remember the story.
Speaker 3 (38:41):
Kurt Warner told us that he was probably gonna be
a Bear because they had the inside track on him.
He got a spider bite or something on a camping
trip and he had to move it, and so he
went to Saint Louis first, and then he was gonna
go to the Bears.
Speaker 12 (38:52):
Saint Louis signed them.
Speaker 1 (38:53):
He never would have been successful in Chicago.
Speaker 12 (38:55):
The Bears could take on anybody's like us.
Speaker 1 (38:57):
Yes, yes, he wouldn't. He would not have survived Bears curse.
Do you have a negative their seaton?
Speaker 7 (39:03):
Yeah, I know it's the one everybody's doing. But it
just really bums me out that Travis Hunter got knocked
out of that game. And that was going to miss
the two biggest games of his career coming up against
Oregon and USC. It kind of really, I just hate
what it does to the whole storyline because it was
that his play is part of the magic of it.
Speaker 6 (39:20):
It's not just Dion.
Speaker 7 (39:21):
He's also got his own little part carved out and
it's just a real bummer.
Speaker 1 (39:25):
Marvin Best and Worst of the Weekend.
Speaker 5 (39:28):
Best of the Weekend Colorado tight end Michael Harrison, who's
a walk on by the way, two touchdown catches and
a two point conversion and tie the game. Can't believe
he's a walk on. Give him a scholarship now. Worst
of the Weekend. HBO canceled Winning Time.
Speaker 1 (39:43):
Yeah. I think they went from ten episode season one
and then they cut back to seven and it was
kind of an abrupt ending there.
Speaker 5 (39:51):
So we don't get to see the Pistons, the rise
of Michael Jordan, you know, World championship.
Speaker 1 (39:56):
Yeah, PAULI beston worst.
Speaker 3 (39:59):
I got a couple best ole miss quarterback Jackson Dart
He ran for one thirty six and two touchdowns through
for two fifty one and TDS leading their offense pretty well.
And then one of the games the weekend. The Missouri
Tigers are three and oh Dan they beat k State,
which is not easy. That place was going crazy. Harrison
nevis or Mavis, I don't know his name, big guy
kicker hits a sixty one yarder to win it. They're
(40:22):
gonna dig them one hundred thousand dollars for rushing the field.
But that's totally worth it if you're in Missouri football.
Speaker 1 (40:26):
By the way, he got a great nickname. He's I
think he's known as the thicker Kicker.
Speaker 3 (40:31):
Yeah, Harrison Medis Yeah, thicker kicker five eleven, two forty
three from Warsaw, Indiana.
Speaker 1 (40:39):
Dan he uh probably could have gone sixty five yards.
That was deep, deep and not playable.
Speaker 2 (40:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (40:49):
Polling.
Speaker 3 (40:49):
There was a lot of arguing about field rushing, court
storming type things this weekend. As you know, Missouri, should
they rush the field? Well, they beat k State, that's
a top twenty team.
Speaker 1 (41:00):
But then Colorado Colorado State.
Speaker 12 (41:02):
Yes, Colorado, huge favorite, but.
Speaker 1 (41:07):
It's a rivalry game. Those students haven't tasted any kind
of success in a while. I'm okay, you get a
Hall pass, Yeah me too. Yeah, let them have fun.
I enjoy it. It's a big week nobody's cared in
a long time. Yeah, yes, let the kids dance.
Speaker 5 (41:22):
I can't stand these dance from footloose. It's ridiculous.
Speaker 1 (41:25):
Go ahead, thank you.
Speaker 3 (41:27):
The anti field rushing people are pretty hardcore on social
media because they say you got to have to be
over a number one team and blah blah.
Speaker 12 (41:33):
Blah blah blah.
Speaker 1 (41:34):
Yeah, I think I think it's a sliding scale there.
They haven't celebrated, they haven't had any opportunity to celebrate.
Let them run, yeample, They're.
Speaker 2 (41:45):
Like, yeah, ar tradition. These kids weren't born when you
guys were winning.
Speaker 5 (41:50):
Rashon Salam run the highs of one twenty five years ago.
Speaker 2 (41:53):
Please go ahead.
Speaker 1 (41:55):
Dion was asked about ranking his kids. Its two kids
who play on the football team, and he said, yeah,
that he ranks his kids, And uh, I'm okay with that.
My mom, you know, ranked her kids. She would tell
you flat out that Dave was her favorite. I'm like,
I'm okay with it. You know, you just have to
try harder.
Speaker 5 (42:15):
I don't care.
Speaker 1 (42:16):
Yeah, gonna work a little bit harder. I've ranked my
kids before, I tell him, but I ranked them in
accordance to how they were as a baby, like.
Speaker 12 (42:25):
A sliding scale, like it changes as the years go by.
Speaker 1 (42:28):
Yeah, yeah, you know, my son had a rough period
there in his teens where he was down and he
was number four on the depth chart.
Speaker 6 (42:37):
But that scenes for you though, especially first time through. Yeah,
that's you know, everybody becomes a teenage puke. Hopefully they
make their way out of it.
Speaker 1 (42:45):
And then my youngest daughter, she was she was fourth
on the depth chart for quite some time. She's rising though. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (42:53):
Yes, is your son having a kid? Did that put
at the top?
Speaker 1 (42:57):
Yeah? Okay, yeah, I'd say that he's probably number one
right now?
Speaker 10 (43:01):
Is everyone here?
Speaker 1 (43:02):
The face? And he might have just had the kids
so he could move up to be number one. Not
a bad move. And I'm like, all right, you know
where are my rank right now? Dad, you're third on
the depth chart. If I have a kid, you'd probably
be one, all right? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (43:19):
The rest of the dan Nets. Are you guys the
favorite out of your parents?
Speaker 1 (43:23):
Todd? Are you?
Speaker 10 (43:26):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (43:28):
Wait?
Speaker 1 (43:29):
Did you hear what we were saying?
Speaker 10 (43:31):
I did not.
Speaker 16 (43:34):
I was just feeling bad because I said the wrong
player that knocked.
Speaker 10 (43:37):
Out Travis Hunter.
Speaker 16 (43:39):
Okay, I got distracted, I said Aiden Hector and it
was actually Henry Blackburn.
Speaker 1 (43:46):
I looked at you close. The man's close.
Speaker 10 (43:49):
What was the question?
Speaker 2 (43:50):
Do I get a jew over? I have not.
Speaker 10 (43:53):
I said yes to that question.
Speaker 1 (43:54):
Yeah, yeah, I could happened before it'll happen again. I
could tell that you were BS in there. Throw the
BS flag on you, Todd, Yeah.
Speaker 10 (44:07):
Yeah, I know what the question was.
Speaker 1 (44:10):
