Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio. It's our two on this Wednesday.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Gangs all here, morale is high, Come on in and
stay awhile head coach of Marvin's Yukon Huskies, Danny Hurley
will join us. Coming up here in a little bit.
Peter Schrager has a new mock draft. He's on loan
from NFL Network. What I love about Schreger is he's
friendly with a lot of the coaches and gms, and

(00:27):
he is basing his mock draft off sources, which makes
it a little bit more interesting than some of the
mockers who go this is what I think they should do,
as opposed to this is what I'm hearing they're leaning
towards doing so. He'll join us a little bit later
on stat of the Day has always brought to you
by Penini America, the official trading cards of the program.
Big day for Marvin in merchandise at Danpatrick dot com.

(00:50):
Two new shirts celebrating the Huskies going back to back
tucon and a new Marvin T shirt as well. Ready
to go go to Dan Patrick dot com. We'll have
a new poll question coming up. Hour two. Kings Knocked
out the Warriors one eighteen to ninety four, and let
the speculation begin of what do you do? Can you

(01:11):
reload or do you rebuild? Thirty two for Keegan Murray.
Sacramento struggled at the end of the year, played some
really good defense last night, and you have the looming
question of Klay Thompson's future with Golden State and others
for that matter. But Clay is an unrestricted free agent.
Lakers hold off the Pelicans. Zion was the best player

(01:33):
on the floor until he wasn't on the floor, got hurt.
He drops forty. Now he does have a couple of
days whatever the injury is. I think initial speculation was
maybe hamstring, but it was an odd moment there when
he scores and then you could see the frustration there.
But Zion back and dominating, and now we'll see if

(01:57):
what his availability will be for that next game with
the Sacramento Kings. Tonight, Heat seventy six ers and the
Hawks at the Bulls. The Hawks are getting three against
the Bulls. The Heat are getting five and a half
against the seventy six ers. All right, eight seven to
seven three DP show email address Dpadanpatrick dot com Twitter
handle a DP show. Lebron went ten for ten from

(02:20):
the line last night. He's the oldest player with ten
or more made free throws in a playoff game since
Reggie Miller went eleven for twelve in the two thousand
and five Eastern Conference Semis against Detroit. I mentioned Zion
getting forty the most by a Pelican player in a
playoff game since Anthony Davis had forty seven in a

(02:41):
game in the twenty eighteen Western Conference first round. Cow
Stall of a day Stanta Day, Statata Day, Scanata Day.
This is the stant of the day sat of They
It brought to you Bob Benini America. So the Kings

(03:03):
advanced to play the Pelicans. They went oh for five
against the Pelicans this season. I mentioned Klay Thompson his future.
He went oh for ten from the floor, the first
over game in which he took more than two shots
in his career, So the first player in franchise history
to go oh for ten or worse in a playoff

(03:23):
game or a play in game. It was tough to
watch because he's one of the greatest shooters of all time,
and it's weird how it can come and go. It's
like golf There are times when you go, what happened?
Where's your swing go? It's happened to all the great
golfers and even shooters. It's happened to every great shooter

(03:43):
where all of a sudden you don't make your shots,
and then all of a sudden it comes back and
you're like, wait, what was that all about? Well, Klay
Thompson is not the Klay Thompson that we once knew.
But you keep that team together and at what priced?
They've spent over one hundred million dollars over the salary camp,
so you got that luxury tax there, you got Chris Paul.

(04:06):
Chris Paul's thirty million dollars salary, He's thirty eight, Clay's
thirty four, STEP's thirty six. He's said to earn fifty
five million. You start to do the math here, and
something's got to change here. Can you just say to Clay,
thank you for the memories some nice parting gifts here,
or do you say what would you be now?

Speaker 3 (04:26):
This?

Speaker 2 (04:27):
My approach would be what would you be willing to
take to stay here? Give us a team friendly deal
and we'll consider that. But if not, you know, we
have to move on. I would put the onus on Clay.
Do you want to stay here? You've made your money,
You've got your titles, You're going to be a Hall

(04:47):
of Famer. How bad do you want to stay? You've
got to make us want to keep you, because right
now we're looking at the business decision of do we
want to spend thirty million dollars a year on you?
In the answer, know, can you get him for a
team friendly two years? Forty million dollars? Would he be
willing to accept that? What do you do with Chris

(05:08):
Paul's contract? And then Wiggins? I mean there's some decisions
to be made here. We did ask the pole question.
Who is furthest from winning a title?

Speaker 3 (05:19):
Now?

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Lebron, KD or Steph Curry. Now obviously Golden State being out,
but KD, Lebron, they all have to go through Denver,
looks like, so they all seem to be further away
from winning a title and steps now out of the playoffs.

(05:40):
I mean, you want to play in the East. Now,
it's like, well, you got Boston there, but then it
gets tricky. When Boston has a big game, big stage,
they don't do well. We haven't heard much about Phoenix
this year. I think what we heard was Bradley Beal
still not and they were a sixth seeded team, but

(06:04):
it didn't feel like they were threatening, even though they
should be. If you have KD and you have Booker
and Bradley Beal if he can play at a pseudo
all star level. Lebron and the Lakers, I don't think
for a moment they were afraid of facing Denver, even
the possibility of, oh my god, if I know I

(06:25):
got to face you, I want to face you now.
I want to have some momentum Denver. The season's over.
How many meaningful games have they played in the Lakers,
you know, just getting into the play in tournament. Now's
when I want to face you. You don't want to
face Denver the next round or after that, because I

(06:46):
think history has shown they get better as the playoffs going. Yes,
you got swept. I don't think for a moment that
Lebron was like, you know, maybe a D six, we
lose the game, then you got to be Sacramento. I
just think it's mind boggling to go, yeah, if you
do this and then you do that, and then you
could avoid them, and then you still got to face Okay,

(07:07):
see the number one seed. All right, let's poll question
for hour two seaton O counter.

Speaker 4 (07:15):
We got a bunch of options right now, Dan, when
we're putting up we are putting up a couple of
new ones as well. Okay, let's see if you were
Klay Thompson, would you want playing time in money or
to stay with the Warriors?

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Well, I hope I would get playing time and maybe
not as much money, and I would stay with Golden State.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
Yeah, but that's not an option on the podcast. You
either get playing time and money or you get to
stay with the Warriors.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
I would stay with the Warriors. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (07:42):
That's a forty seven percent of the vote right now,
would stay with the Warriors. Okay, all right, Well, our
audience is greedy. We have a trade proposal from Paul.
Oh okay, it's not official.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
This is Paul.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
The Lakers give the Warriors Reeves and Hachi Mora for
and a first round draft pick for Steph Curry to
pair him with Lebron for the next two seasons. Is
a great idea or a terrible idea?

Speaker 2 (08:13):
Right now? Sixty percent of the audience has terrible idea. Okay,
terrible idea for the Golden State Warriors to trade Steph
Curry or whom.

Speaker 4 (08:22):
Yeah, do you have to give up more than that
for Steph?

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Well, first of all, you got to pay him, so
he's gonna be thirty seven making fifty five million. And
do the Lakers even have a first round draft pick
next year and you're gonna give them Reeves and Rui Hachermura, Okay, yes,
bolly for.

Speaker 5 (08:47):
Here's my rationale behind that. For the next two years.
The Lakers with their current roster, do they feel like
they're gonna make the NBA finals? Would you bet against it?
Bet against them making the NBA finals?

Speaker 2 (08:58):
Probably right, I guess.

Speaker 5 (09:01):
But this current roster, they've got some decent young I
guess Ruey Hotchin Morris pretty good. He's twenty seven, Reese
like twenty four to twenty five. If you're not going
anywhere then and you have Lebron for two more years,
you would assume, what are we doing? Why not try
something different for the next two years? Well, I get that, okay,
And then if you're so you kind of like that.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
But you have to go to Steph and say sure,
because that's what I said in the first hour. If
I'm going to be loyal. I'm going to start my
loyalty with Steph Curry.

Speaker 5 (09:32):
So you bring up to Steph Curry, We're gonna offer
you to the Lakers. I don't think that's the worst
landing spuff for a guy who wants to be in the media,
who want likes the big stage. And if you look
at this from the warrior standpoint, you could stick with
what you got, or you could revamp and start with
two good players who are entering their prime.

Speaker 2 (09:50):
Well, I would ask Steph Curry. I would say, look,
I don't know if this team can win a championship.
How important is that to you? We want to do
right by you. What you've done for this organization. We
created a dynasty. We want to do right by you.
Now we can try to, you know, negotiate and bring

(10:12):
Clay back, and you have Draymond back, and you have
Kaminga will probably have to lose Wiggins. We'll have to
you know, we're going to have to you know, sort
the deck deck chairs here on the Titanic to make
sure we don't sink. And then, you know, is that
going to be good enough for you? And he might say, look,
these are my guys that I came in with and
that's who I'm going to go out with. That would

(10:33):
probably be his answer. But if you said to him
in a moment of truth and you just said, hey,
what about you went to the Lakers? Now, there are
no guarantee you're going to win with the Lakers because
these teams that you're facing are young. Okay, see is
the youngest team. They're like twenty three years of age
average Minnesota young team. I mean, Denver's not an old team.

(10:59):
You know what is Joker twenty seven, twenty eight? Maybe,
so you still have to go through these teams to
get to play for a championship. Joker just turned twenty nine.
But I don't know if if I'm the Lakers, I
entertain it. Heck yeah, let's see the Lakers. Do they

(11:23):
have a first round draft pick? Todd, you got to
turn on your microphone.

Speaker 6 (11:31):
Let me take a look. I just moved away from
that screen. But they have first round pick in twenty
twenty four that's owned by the Pelicans, have the rights
to receive a twenty twenty five pick instead off the
Anthony Davis trade in twenty nineteen.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
Okay, I think that's a no, And I think the
Pelicans have the rights to twenty twenty five, their first
round pick in twenty twenty six. They own that one.
But yeah, I think you at least have to explore
all all avenues here. If I'm the Lakers and if
I'm Golden State, absolutely, I mean, if the Lakers bow out,

(12:08):
you know we're gonna start to look at Now what
do you do? Do you trade Anthony Davis? Like, I
think you have to have these these conversations at least, yes, Mark.

Speaker 7 (12:17):
To make that Warriors Lakers trade a real possibility. Anthony
Davis has to be in the trade. I think you
just can't like Rory Hotchamore and Austin Reeves isn't going
to cut it.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
If you're the Warriors, do you want Anthony Davis? No? No,
you don't. Okay, So the trade? Uh? Danny in California? Hi, Danny,
what's on your mind today?

Speaker 3 (12:41):
Hey?

Speaker 8 (12:41):
Dan?

Speaker 3 (12:41):
Hey?

Speaker 2 (12:41):
Dan? Hey?

Speaker 9 (12:43):
A long time with their first time caller. Hey, I
just you guys were talking about the Lakers throwing the
game or not. You guys, but Sports Talk Radio the
last few days about the Lakers throwing the game instead
rather not play Denver. Well, how about New Orleans throwing
that game. If uh, if Anthony Davis would have walked
off of just a couple minutes left, and i've they've
walked off. Zion wasn't lifting. He didn't look like he

(13:03):
was hurt that bad. The conspiracy theories would be going
crazy about the Lakers throwing the game, but nobody's mentioned
the Normans through the game.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
Oh, I don't think New Orleans was throwing the game.
I mean they were fighting it to win it. So
I never for a moment this was speculation leading up
to the game. Not hey, in the moment here, I
mean Zion put up forty Like, you're not trying to
throw the game if you're putting on forty points. He

(13:33):
got hurt, but this was Look, it was just put
out by ESPN, you know, a couple of days ago,
and it got a little momentum, there got some coverage,
people talked about it. Darvinham said, you got to be
in an insane asylum for us to consider something like that.
Josh and Nebraska, Hi, Josh, what's on your mind?

Speaker 10 (13:58):
Pdp uh, thanks for thinking my call. Just wanted to
say that I really think that the Golden State Ware
should run it back with Clay and Staph really think
that letting go of legends like that would really kind
of diminish that franchise. They were kind of nothing before that.
And then I also wanted to wish a happy thirty
fifth birthday to my twin brother Joe. I know he's listening.

(14:21):
I'm also sitting here with my class of juniors and
seniors in sociology. I'm a high school teacher, So shout up,
so shout out.

Speaker 2 (14:28):
To Wait, you're in middle. You're in the middle of class, Josh.

Speaker 10 (14:31):
Yeah, they're they're working on a project right now.

Speaker 3 (14:34):
DP.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
All right, okay, I just want to mention, So it's
Joe's birthday today, your twin brother.

Speaker 10 (14:39):
Yes, it's Joe's birthday, my twin brother.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
All righty, here we go. Are we ready? Happy birthday? Birthday?
It is? It would be Josh's birthday too if he's
your twin brother. But Joe doesn't care about Josh because
Joe didn't call in to say I'd like to wish
my twin brother happy birthday. Yeh, sudon just saying.

Speaker 4 (15:00):
And Iowa teachers are paying attention to their class in Nebraska.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
They're not Nebraska.

Speaker 4 (15:05):
Apparently, it's time to call into sports radio shows. But
in Iowa, the teachers take education seriously.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
Oh oh, Paul.

Speaker 5 (15:15):
If I had a twin brother for his birthday, I
would send him a picture of one of us, and
I wouldn't tell him which one it is, because I'm
a nice photo and.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
Like, you don't know who it is.

Speaker 5 (15:23):
A side question if you guys had twin children, if
you ever, if you had twins, would you dress them alike.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
When they're younger? No? No, because I'd have to tell
them apart, because especially there have to be parents who
screwed up and go, is that Tommy or is that Timmy?
Like do you put a sharpie on him? To just
put a mark on their forehead? Do I give them
a wristband? Do I give them a laminade?

Speaker 8 (15:52):
Here?

Speaker 6 (15:54):
God, I would risk not knowing who they are. I
think it's cuter to address them alike when they're younger,
that it becomes progressive, creepier and strange once they get
a little older.

Speaker 2 (16:03):
Yeah, if you're like twenty five in your dressing ten, I.

Speaker 6 (16:07):
Think once you hit double duds, like really going to
do that?

Speaker 2 (16:09):
Okay, Yes, Paul.

Speaker 5 (16:10):
In my neighborhood, there's a set of twins and they're
in their high school years and they dress identically daily.

Speaker 2 (16:18):
It's and how old are they?

Speaker 5 (16:19):
I would guess fifteen, yeah, fourteen, fifteen, Yeah, it's.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
I don't want to judge it. You just did. I
asked the question.

Speaker 5 (16:31):
You just did, Like you said, if they're four, it's
it's cusy.

Speaker 2 (16:35):
Yeah, yeah, especially if they're girls. You know, you can
have the same outfits and bows in their hair and
dresses and all that. You know, boys, I would only
do it.

Speaker 1 (16:45):
Yeah, I'm Billy.

Speaker 2 (16:46):
No, no, you're Tommy. But you know, if they're identical,
and then you're like damn, and then you know, you
put them to bed and you say to your wife,
are you sure that's Timmy? Where's that Tommy?

Speaker 4 (17:00):
Who's got the called tim of your tom I don't know.

Speaker 3 (17:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (17:03):
One of the funniest things I've ever heard in my life.
In eighth grade, I went to school with Steve and
Larry Andertitch and they were twins, identical twins, and they
were arguing with each other. They always argued, and Steve
called Larry ugly and we I mean, we're still laughing
about that.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
Yeah, you're ugly. Hold a second, we're ugly. We're ugly,
all right, let me take a break. We'll talk to
the head coach. He's the uh well, he's become the
face of college basketball. Dan Hurley will join us on
loan from Yukon. Back after this Dan Patrick Show.

Speaker 1 (17:36):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio wapp.

Speaker 5 (17:46):
Two NBA Insiders podcasting twice a week to plug you
right into the NBA Grape.

Speaker 11 (17:51):
Five, all happening in only one place. This League Uncut,
the new NBA podcast with Me, Chris Haynes, and Mark
Stein join us as we team up to expound on
everything we're covering Hearing and Chason.

Speaker 5 (18:06):
Listen to This League Uncut with Chris Haynes and Mark Stein.

Speaker 11 (18:10):
On the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get
your podcasts.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
He's done it again, back to back national titles. He's
only been at Yukon for six seasons. He's Danny Hurley
back on the program. How do you feel?

Speaker 8 (18:28):
Uh, you know, probably a bunch of things at times. Yeah,
at times, probably exhausted. At other times, you know, great
elation at other times, I don't love uncertainty in terms
of the roster, so my mind drifts to, you know,
what what the team's gonna look like moving forward, So

(18:51):
you know, just kind of like all over the place.
But intermittently, you know, starting to appreciate what we did
a lot more.

Speaker 3 (18:57):
When when you got to get those quiet alone time.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
Were you dealing with the transfer portal during the tournament?

Speaker 3 (19:05):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (19:06):
I think we we were. We were talking about it
openly with the team, and you know, we we had
a little bit of an issue last year with you know,
just uh you know, we're players. Uh, I think beginning
that process before the season ended, so uh, you know,

(19:27):
we just talked openly to the younger players and hey,
we you know, we know the portals open, but we
got a chance to do something special, and uh, you're
not missing anything. The portal is gonna be opened for
a long time and it's going to be total chaos.

Speaker 3 (19:42):
Uh. So you know, if that's.

Speaker 8 (19:43):
The direction you want to go, just honor the season
and what we're trying to do historically and.

Speaker 2 (19:49):
Just wait, why do but why don't we wait to
open the transfer portal until after the tournament?

Speaker 3 (19:55):
I don't know, I.

Speaker 8 (19:56):
Think that that's obviously it may makes a ton of sense.
Maybe it's the Maybe it's the college basketball's version of
giving the best draft.

Speaker 3 (20:08):
Picks to the worst teams. So the teams who seasons.

Speaker 8 (20:10):
Are over they get a chance to while the really
good teams are busy playing, they.

Speaker 3 (20:16):
Have an opportunity.

Speaker 8 (20:17):
So maybe it's the they're finding a model of pro
sports leagues in their drafts.

Speaker 2 (20:23):
Do you guys, have you kind of created the blueprint
here do you think for what college basketball successful college
basketball should be and how to build a roster?

Speaker 8 (20:33):
I uh, it's it's probably hard to argue against it,
just you know, the kind of the balance between young
players that that you recruit out of high school you're
giving you a boost, and then obviously having players that
that that you player developed obviously freshman to sophomore year

(20:56):
big jump, sophomore to junior year big jump, and then
strategically using the portal. And then obviously you know we've
got the great resources. But I don't think players come here.
Maybe the nil may be the third or fourth reason
why players come here. Maybe the fifth reason why play
heres come here. If it's the primary reason why players

(21:18):
come to your program, it's going to hard to build
the championship culture.

Speaker 2 (21:23):
How do you think history is going to look at
these back to back champs.

Speaker 8 (21:27):
Well, I think regardless of how these guys NBA careers go,
you look at the analytics. I mean, no one has
dominated an NCAA tournament the way our team did this year,
and I think we're top five the last two years
in terms of domination. But the overall story the analytics

(21:49):
tell obviously a great story about how great this year's
team was. It feels like one of the best in
the last twenty five thirty years based on the efficiency
and equality that we played at. But overall, when you
look at it, it's going to depend on how these guys'
NBA careers pan out. Uh well, unfortunately will be tied

(22:09):
to how this team is viewed. So we need Clint
Kong and these other guys to go.

Speaker 2 (22:16):
How would your team, whichever team you want to pick,
do against your brothers duke championship teams.

Speaker 8 (22:24):
Uh well, it would have stacked up even better if
we were able to bring Hawkins back and Sono go
back and Jackson back to this team. But you know,
like look at just how we were at the number
one offense in the country. We were one of the
top defenses in the country. We were a great rebounding team,

(22:47):
all five of our starters. It feels like have a
great chance to play in the NBA slash lottery picks slash.
You know, so I think the I think it would
have been been a great game. Obviously, you know, the
stopping their point guard, Duke would have been the biggest
challenge because Bob is the greatest point guard to ever

(23:09):
play in college.

Speaker 2 (23:10):
So, oh, you're sucking up to your brother here, aren't you.

Speaker 8 (23:18):
Yeah, that's I've done it my whole life and big
Bro is always taking care of me Dan, So it's
it's the least I could do.

Speaker 2 (23:25):
When do you come up with the strategy to let
Edie score as much as he wants to score, but
you're going to shut down the perimeter?

Speaker 8 (23:33):
Well, those scouting things, and obviously it was a quick
turnaround from the Alabama game. We had a lot more
time to prepare for Alabama than we did for Purdue.
That was like a you know, a thirty six hour
turnaround in terms.

Speaker 3 (23:46):
Of being ready.

Speaker 8 (23:48):
So we come on a young and Luke Murray too,
are the best coaches in the country that alternate scouts.
You know, they they lay out the game plan or
at least what they would like to do, and then
obviously I got to make the ultimate decision on whether
I want to go with it, and I, uh, you know, Luke,
you know, Luke presented, I think an awesome game plan

(24:11):
and uh, you know, he laid it out to the
staff and in the first ten minutes, uh, when Edie
was was kind of you know, having his way in
those one on ones. I think there might have been
a time out at the under twelve where where the
staff was starting to attack Luke's plan.

Speaker 3 (24:28):
Uh, but you.

Speaker 8 (24:32):
Know we we we trust each other year and you know,
and and and obviously you know, for the next twenty
minutes before Donovan got in foul trouble, he won a
lot more of those one on one battles versus Edie,
and then obviously, you know, we were able to take control.
But you know, Luke, Uh, Luke was steadfast and as

(24:53):
we were waffling.

Speaker 2 (24:54):
He's a Dan Hurley Yukon head coach, back to back championships.
What would make you leave etiquette?

Speaker 8 (25:03):
Maybe just burnout at this point for me, just uh,
you know, pushing too hard and probably you know, just
breaking down at some point, just uh, because you just
can't keep up the intensity and and the energy and
and you know, the output.

Speaker 3 (25:20):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (25:20):
And then maybe down the road, if I could grow
up a little bit mature, you know, mature a little
bit with the emotions, maybe the NBA, you know, down
down the road.

Speaker 2 (25:31):
Uh So why do you want to do that? Why
do you want to do that to yourself? Go to
the NBA?

Speaker 3 (25:39):
Well, you know, I think college has become like the
G League. Uh, you know, yeah in a way.

Speaker 8 (25:46):
I mean it's uh, you know, not that's obviously tongue
in cheek, but you know, a lot of the college
game has changed. You know, you you you, you win
the national Championship, and obviously we're gonna do things, go
to White, do the we had to parade, you do
these things. But you're you're basically right into free agency frenzy.
So you know, uh, it's uh, I'm more worried about

(26:10):
burnout that I am going to the NBA.

Speaker 2 (26:12):
What was the conversation like when Kentucky called.

Speaker 3 (26:17):
It was it was.

Speaker 8 (26:18):
Really uh, you know, I had a brief conversation with
my agent maybe on on on Sunday as that news
was breaking, and it was you know, do you know,
do you would you have an interest if they call?
And you know, my answer, you know, to that was no,
I'm you know, I'm the head coach at the best

(26:39):
program in the country. Why would I leave the best
program in the country, even if another place is really
good or or or as great. But your agent wants
you to to try to deflect, you know, because you're
you're at Yukon. You're you want to reward your staff,
you want to increase the resources in your program.

Speaker 3 (26:59):
So your agent is kind of telling you, hey, you.

Speaker 8 (27:01):
Know, don't say you're interested, but don't say no, because
I've got to I got to deal with the Yukon
people on a lot of things.

Speaker 2 (27:10):
Well, yeah, you got to play the game. Even though
you want to stay at Yukon, you have to give
the at least maybe the thought that, you know what,
maybe somebody else is going to love me a little
bit more.

Speaker 3 (27:20):
So I looked like a donkey. I pinned it on
my wife.

Speaker 8 (27:23):
Uh I was evasive, but it was I looked like
a donkey the way I was answering things. But privately,
all the players I talked to them about it, and
yeah they understood.

Speaker 2 (27:38):
When you're out watching these kids in high school and
you're seeing everybody wants to be Steph Curry as a coach,
you know, tough minded discipline, Like how nervous does that
make you when you see somebody who is jacking from
you know, thirty feet.

Speaker 8 (27:53):
Away, Yeah, you just walk away and go, you know,
go find somebody else. You go find somebody you know
that that has the traits. Obviously the talent piece where
they're talented enough, but you you really want I study
these kids when I go to the AAU games, I don't.
I don't play with my phone. I hate my phone.

(28:14):
I watch. I watch how these players interact with with
with their coaches, with their teammates. I watch their parents
in the stands. I watched to see if their parents
are super critical of their coaches, because if they kill
all their coaches. Uh, and and they're and they're in
four or five different high schools and they change travel teams,

(28:34):
they're just going to do the same thing to you.
So you know, you just you just evaluate the person
and the and the people around the person.

Speaker 2 (28:43):
Do you get a vacation?

Speaker 3 (28:47):
I think we just looked at May, middle of May.

Speaker 8 (28:50):
I think you're you're gonna I think there's like a
two or three day window where it's it's Jersey short time.
So but yeah, I mean we're gonna go about a
month here with players that have got to make NBA decisions.
You know, we're portaling like everybody else, you know, and
and then obviously we've got to start recruiting the next

(29:11):
recruiting class, so that Uh, this isn't like coaching in
the NBA when the season's over, you you just go
away and the front office takes over. You know, we
we are the front office.

Speaker 3 (29:20):
You know.

Speaker 2 (29:21):
It feels like the coaching aspect of this is the
easier part of all of this. It's crazy to say that,
but it feels that way.

Speaker 3 (29:29):
Yeah, it's it's I've said it for years.

Speaker 8 (29:32):
Uh, you know, Dan, it's like the best part of
the day is practice time. That the most fun part
and the most natural part is uh is watching is
absorbing your opponent's film and and and and pregame locker room.
I mean that's the part that that feels the best,
makes the most sense.

Speaker 3 (29:51):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (29:52):
Once you start getting into n I A, n I
L valuation negotiations and Uh, you know try and Uh,
it's just it's hard, I guess when you're talking to
players in your own program and you've got to convince
them that it's in their best interest to stay in
the best program in the country. Like, uh, it feels

(30:13):
like that should go without saying that you should stay
in the best program in the country.

Speaker 2 (30:17):
Let's say you're recruiting me, when can I bring up
N I L when it doesn't make you nervous about
what my priorities are.

Speaker 8 (30:27):
Well, once you're convinced that that you want to come
to Yukon, Uh, you know, we'll go through a visit
and and it'll never come up, or maybe it's the
last thing that comes up. Or it's got to be
a situation where you love the culture, you love the
style of play, you know, myself and the coaching staff
for the people that you want to play for. You

(30:49):
you love the team and you want to be a
part of that locker room. Uh, you know, you want
to play in the Big East, and you love our
you know, you you love our player development and the
holistic approach that we take to our players. And then
you know, and then the obviously the you know, the
n I l has got to be you know, good
enough for you. But I think you know right now,

(31:11):
like what Yukon brings to the table in terms of, uh,
you know, we're gonna teach you how to fish, which
is gonna last you a lifetime, and we're not just
gonna kind of throw you fish that's gonna feed you
for a day. And we want people that you know,
that have that balance in that perspective where they're not
trying to go to the highest bidder. They're looking for
the best combination of N I, L and and and

(31:33):
program to excel in.

Speaker 2 (31:35):
Okay, but if I say all those things, I love
the culture, I want to be here. You know, I'm buying,
and I'm gonna play defense, I'm gonna play hard, and
I'd like five hundred thousand dollars, Like can I do
it that way?

Speaker 8 (31:46):
As long as it's it's reasonable and and you know,
and and and it lines up with uh, you know,
I guess you know close to what the what the
market is, you know. But there's a lot of unreasonable
there's a lot of unreasonable numbers.

Speaker 2 (32:03):
Okay, give me an unreasonable number, no names, just an
unreasonable number.

Speaker 3 (32:07):
I think I heard one point three from a collective. Okay,
you know last year and and.

Speaker 8 (32:15):
You know, I'm not sure that that is the uh
that is is what the the spirit of n I
L was. I think the spirit of n I L was, like,
I take it, take advantage of name, image and likeness
in a manner of like the way of Donovan Klingen
did this year. You know, huge personality, incredible player on

(32:36):
the court, and then what what what he did this
year in endorsements off the court?

Speaker 3 (32:42):
Uh?

Speaker 8 (32:43):
I don't think I could share that number with you,
uh because the I R S is going to become.

Speaker 2 (32:48):
Well know, he has to report it to the I
R S anyway.

Speaker 8 (32:51):
Yeah, but you know, hey, listen, these kids they bring
a lot of value obviously March madness, you know, brings
uh you know, millions of dollars or whatever that number is.
I think, you know, when we get to revenue sharing
and contracts, I think that's going to be a happy
day for a lot of coaches. I think for a

(33:12):
lot of players, because I think a lot of schools too.
They embellished the number for players and then they don't
come through on the promise too, So kids end up
picking a worse school because they think it's more money,
and then a lot of the collectives, you know, or
some of the collectives actually don't even come through.

Speaker 2 (33:30):
I got two years of eligibility left. Now, I'm just saying,
like you took your son, I mean you should be
able to take me right.

Speaker 3 (33:41):
Well. You know, we we don't rely.

Speaker 8 (33:46):
On players that are electrifying off the dribble, which is
what I don't think you are. I actually think you
have a chance to play in our system because you
know we're going to move you around off the ball.

Speaker 3 (33:57):
We're going to help you to get shots.

Speaker 2 (34:00):
A verbal offer, coach, I just want to make sure
I think you.

Speaker 3 (34:04):
Can help our brand a lot. You think I could
bring in n I L for the good players.

Speaker 8 (34:09):
So if I've got to use my thirteenth scholarship, that
guy's not going to play anyway.

Speaker 2 (34:13):
So and I don't need n I L.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
That's you're going to bring it up.

Speaker 2 (34:18):
I am bringing NI L. That's that's that's my nickname.
I'm n I L. Let me know when practice starts, coach,
I'll be there. Hey, thank you, Bud, appreciate it. That's
Dan Hurley at basketball. Coach. Sounded like an offer to me.
I think you're in sound like an offer, Marvin. Now

(34:40):
I'm come on one of your family. Now, let's go
Yukon magazine. Come back. Yeah, I'm going to be the
centerfold in Yukon Magazine. Yeah yeah, Paul, let's stretch us out.

Speaker 5 (34:50):
Let's do the table, the three hats, you fake the
Syracuse had you fake? The sleeping hall?

Speaker 2 (34:54):
We never seat in all Well because yeah, okay, I
mean they didn't the tournament.

Speaker 4 (35:00):
Yeah okay, yeah they won the nit Yeah okay, I
mean either way, you're getting the banner.

Speaker 2 (35:09):
Yeah, that's right, put it up in Walsh. Let's take
a break here back after this.

Speaker 2 (35:27):
Reflecting back on some things that Danny Hurley said, the
Yukon head coach, he talked about burnout and he sounded
like a guy who needed a nap. And when I said,
you know, do you have a vacation, he said, yeah,
maybe two days at the Jersey Shore. That's what gets
these coaches because you get to a certain level and
it's not like you can go, hey, I won back
to back titles. I'm going to take this next year

(35:49):
off or lower your expectation. It doesn't work that way. Like,
once you get there, you've raised the bar, Well, it's
attached to you. How long can you hold the bar up?
And I don't think that. You know, he's already talking
about a three peat and I don't think the expectation
level softens. I'm wondering if we look at them the

(36:12):
way we used to look at Duke and say, I
don't know who they have coming in, but they're going
to be there. Like is Connecticut now there where you
just say, I don't even think they were a top
ten team preseason going into this year. They won the
national title, but maybe some of the list had them
in a top ten but some didn't, and there's still

(36:35):
an element of surprise. I think that like in Connecticut, man,
they're good again, But it's different when you're trying to
go back to back and you're doing it with different rosters,
Like that's that's where you know a lot of these teams,
Duke they had those players stay, UCLA had those players stay.
You know, how hard is it to have a dynasty

(36:57):
or at least something like that when you're having interchangeable
parts every year.

Speaker 4 (37:01):
Yeah, because it is interesting that with Yukon, with the
first ring they built, this roster won a championship and
then it was sort of like, well, they're not going
to be able to do that again, or let's see
if they could do that again, and then they did
it back to back. You can't really have that same
storyline through this next summer of well, let's see if
they could do it again.

Speaker 2 (37:20):
But try to replicate that, like, so here's the blueprint, Okay,
now try to do that with a different roster each year.
We got to find this person transferring in and he's
a good shooter, and this guy and then we got
this guy coming back, and then we sprinkle in a
couple of freshmen. It sounds like, oh, yeah, everybody'll be
able to do that, but obviously you can, Yes, Marvin, and.

Speaker 7 (37:44):
I think what Duke did was when they won with
a little okafor and Tyas Young, they kept getting really
great want and done. They got Kyrie Irving, Jason Tatum,
Jabari Parker, Austin Rivers, and they kept going in that direction.

Speaker 2 (37:58):
Zion R. J.

Speaker 3 (37:59):
Barrett.

Speaker 7 (38:00):
So what I think Yukon's going to do is kind
of the same thing.

Speaker 3 (38:02):
They'll sprinkle in.

Speaker 2 (38:03):
Or those guys didn't win championships.

Speaker 7 (38:05):
Right, just Julia okafor yeah, and you go that way,
say hey, look we can win with a top five
recruiting class and then let's try let's try to see
if we can keep that going. But it didn't work
that way, and so what I think Yukon's done is just, hey,
let's sprinkle in a great five star freshman with a
bunch of vets.

Speaker 2 (38:22):
Yeah, And I think that that's like Gino Oriema can
go out and get the top players in the country
knowing they're going to be there at least three years
playing for the women's team. For Danny Hurley, if he
gets a one and done, you know, it's almost to
the detriment of the team, like he wants players that
are going to be there or transfer in. I would
definitely be in the portal. If I was a coach,

(38:43):
I'd be in the portal. I want to see what
you've done. Like DJ Wagner at Kentucky, he was the
number one or number two recruit. He's in the transfer
portal now, and you know the lineage with his father
and his grandfather, like he couldn't miss, but he was
very sporadic on his one and done.

Speaker 4 (38:59):
Yes, And it's not like Yukon is bringing in these
big name players, you know, like Tristan Newton, who before
he got there it was like, who is He's a
zero star recruit. Camp Spencer wasn't exactly a guy until
he got to Yukon and you're like, dang, this kid
really can shoot. I know at Rutgers had done some things,
but still he wasn't exactly a household name.

Speaker 2 (39:20):
They become household names as opposed to Duke, where there
are a name before they get there. At Connecticut, they
become a name in the system. There, Kentucky, you go
in with the name, Yeah, Pauline.

Speaker 5 (39:32):
Right now, I'm looking at a couple of different websites Connecticut.
This is high school recruiting. Has the twenty sixth rank
recruiting class. They've got two four star players coming in.
The top recruiting classes are going to Duke, Arizona, Rutgers, Missouri, Baylor, Alabama,
North Carolina, Kansas, Purdue, Yeah, right the top. Yeah, Rutgers
is killing it. They have a whole new nil.

Speaker 4 (39:53):
Program, have a huge nil thing with I forget the
company now, but there's a.

Speaker 5 (39:57):
Big free cash dot com.

Speaker 2 (39:59):
Yeah, well they have Ron Harper's son. Who is it,
Dylan Harper. Yeah, he's coming in. Not for long, but
he's coming in. I'm going to get paid. But what
you get paid in college basketball is different than what
you're going to get paid for college football, because if
I'm a quarterback, I mean that. Just look at the

(40:19):
revenue that you're producing that you can afford to pay.
And you've got guys who are making seven eight nine
million dollars in college football basketball, you know, maybe you
get a million million and a half because how much
revenue are you bringing in? Duke sells out the place,
so it's not like you're bringing in more revenue. Caitlin
Clark brought in revenue to Iowa because they sold out

(40:43):
everywhere they went. But how many of those players are
out there? Final hour on the way the future of
the Golden State Warriors and another mock draft. But it's
our good buddy, Pete Schrager, and we have a lot
of confidence in him. So two hours in the books
on this Wednesday, we'll get to more phone calls as well.
