Kevin Mala, part of the four Red Sox and an
analyst for MLB Network. He'll join us coming up here
shortly as we recap what we saw last night as
Freddie Freeman did it again. That's three consecutive games in
this World Series, and go back to the two previous
(00:51):
games that he played with the Braves in the World Series.
That's five consecutive games with a home run in the
World Series. The bigger news to me though, Walker Bueller, Bueller.
It wasn't that long ago that he looked like he
was going to be the next great pitcher. And he
finished maybe fourth and the cy Young went sixteen and
four and then had Tommy John surgery. But in the
(01:13):
World Series, his ERA of zero point five zero, the
lowest by any Dodger pitcher to make at least three
World Series starts, and the third lowest of any pitcher
with at least three World Series starts. Madison Bumgardner and
Jack Billingham the only two pitchers with a lower World
Series ra than Walker Bueller.

Staut of the Day brought to you by Panini America
and the official trading cards of the program. Still you
had a really good performance by him, Yamamoto, Flaherty, But
you're still using a lot of pictures in this World Series.
There were combined fifteen pitchers in the World Series Game
three last night. Aaron Boone, the Yankee manager after the game,
(02:07):
starts with the reporters question about Aaron Judge.
Speaker 4 (02:12):
Aaron, do you think that Judges is at the point
here where the struggle is so complete that he's not
going to be able to bust out of it at
this point? No, I don't believe that. What do you
think he has to do for it to happen?
Speaker 5 (02:25):
Wait?
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Mate, hold on Mark, hold On, hold on, Okay, can
you imagine if Aaron Boone says, yeah, I don't see
him busting out of this. So play the question and
then that first part of the response.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
Aaron, do you think that Judges is at the point
here where the struggle is so complete that he's not
going to be able to bust out of it at
this point?
Speaker 5 (02:49):
No?
Speaker 6 (02:49):
Okay, okay, I do actually have completely lost faith in him?
Speaker 5 (02:53):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (02:54):
As his manager, I have lost complete faith. I'm thinking
about sitting in Game four.
Speaker 5 (02:57):
I think I'm gonna bench him. I'm gonna bench Judgy. Yeah.
Oh my.
Speaker 6 (03:02):
Do you think you think Judge's lost it where you
can't ever play it ever again because he's no good?
Speaker 5 (03:06):
Now?
Speaker 6 (03:07):
Just talk about that, coach, Just get to talk about that.
Talk about Aaron struggles and why you don't believe in
him anymore, Coach.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
Judge. I don't always ask the right question, but I
I've been in situations with the New York media when
I worked in New York.
Speaker 5 (03:26):
Man, there's some dumb questions that are asked.
Speaker 7 (03:29):
Skip you think the series is over? You guys get
a chance to come back?
Speaker 5 (03:31):
Yeah, no, it's over. Yeah, we got no chance here.
Speaker 6 (03:34):
We might just forfeit.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Skipper, Hey, Skipper, do you think Judge, he won't be
able to break out of this?
Speaker 8 (03:44):
Judge?
Speaker 5 (03:45):
Imagine if he had said, yeah, he's done, Judge. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
That means you're like, you're closer to the manager and
the scene, and you're you're calling him judge.
Speaker 5 (03:58):
I mean, what are we paying them all this money for?
Speaker 6 (04:00):
I mean, the guy he's not going to hit in
the postseason, then why would we give him this?
Speaker 5 (04:03):
Judge? We'll ask Kevin Mala. Oh my god, Skip.
Speaker 7 (04:08):
If you guys get swept, you think you should be fired?
What's up?
Speaker 5 (04:11):
He squeeze me, Yeah, Judge, Judge.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Okay, so he got the game tonight, game four, and
the question is can they somehow win two games to
send this back to La.
Speaker 5 (04:29):
Nope, they can't. Nope.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
I'm sorry, not without Judge, we won't be able to
do it. It's over. In fact, we're going to have a
little ticker tape parade for the Dodgers after tonight's game. Judge,
all right, so the Dodgers win Friday Freeman Homers again,
Dodgers Yankees game for tonight first pitch eight away.
Speaker 5 (04:51):
The Steelers are now six and two. The Stillers.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
I don't know if they're an impressive six and two,
but at this stage I don't care. I think the
fact that they're six and two were surprised at because
of the quarterbacking situation. Here we are eight weeks into
the NFL season, and this is where you start to
see the hierarchy take shape. But keep this in mind.
(05:16):
Let's just go back to last year. The Eagles were
seven and one through eight games. They went one in
four to end the season, then they lost in the
wildcard round. The Jags six and two. They won five
straight team failed to make the playoffs. But then you
had the Texans, the Buccaneers, the Rams, and the Packers.
Speaker 5 (05:38):
They made the postseason.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
All of those teams had losing records after eight weeks,
and all, let's see, three of the four made the
divisional round except for the Rams. So the playoff format
appears to be taking shape, or at least starting two.
But you look at the amount of parody we've seen
so far, and if last year's any indicaate, we're nowhere
(06:01):
close to knowing anything about the postseason. And I was
really surprised about that. The number of teams who had
losing records after eight games, who ended up getting into
the playoffs and then winning a playoff game. All right,
Kevin Malar will join us, Big Mike Gullick will join us.
A little bit later on, I got to ask him
what was worse the defensive back Tyreek Stevenson with the
(06:26):
Bears or Anthony Richardson of the Colts. So Anthony Richardson
takes himself out and admits that he's tired, and they
were in the red zone. Tyreek Stevenson is engaging with
the crowd, and then you have the final play. In fact,
the ball I think had been thrown or the ball
had been snapped, he still has his back to the quarterback.
(06:50):
And then we found out he was supposed to be
behind the receiver who scored the game winning touchdown. Here
is the Bears defensive back Tyreek Stevenson the play was.
Speaker 9 (07:02):
I supposed to box out? Eighty five had to be
out of the play? Was, you know, cheering on just
chairing with some Bears fans. Wasn't taughting no fans. Was
just sharing with some Bears fans, and the Washington fans
react to how they wanted to. My job was to
box out eighty five. And you know when I went
up to hit the balls pretty much to knock it
down in interceptions, and you know, especially in the close
(07:23):
game like that, so just try to make it, make
a play for my team. And you know, he either
could have went, oh, Tyreek, you know, good pass, knock down,
or we're in the situation we're in right now.
Speaker 5 (07:33):
Okay, he just made it worse. He didn't even do
his job.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
He's out of position, he's not where he's supposed to be,
and then he's going to come to the rescue. He's
going to come out of nowhere and knock the ball down.
Until you don't knock it down, you tip it and
the guy you're supposed to be boxing out your only
your only job is to box out that guy.
Speaker 5 (07:57):
He scores the game winning touchdown. Yes, Bart, do you.
Speaker 8 (08:01):
Take some of the blame away now from Matt Eberflus.
Speaker 5 (08:05):
You know what I do.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
I call a timeout because if I have a timeout,
Tyreek Stevenson is not engaged with the crowd. Not that
that's why you take the timeout, but you take the
timeout because you have three of them. They don't let
you keep them. Towards the end of the year. You
call a timeout, you go over responsibilities, You remind them
(08:28):
of responsibilities. Maybe you do something like not have a
spy on a quarterback who would have to run it
sixty yards. You have either another guy rushing or another
guy back. But you tell everybody here's the responsibility. Guy
in front, guy and back, and then it's a scrum
(08:48):
in between. But when you think about it, you got
Jayden Daniels didn't even get the ball to the end zone.
I would have said to my team when Washington got
the ball, how about we do this, guys, how about
we make sure they have to earn ten to twelve
to thirteen yards. Okay, softer coverage, but let's let them
(09:11):
earn that. How About we keep them in, you know,
in between the lines here. How about we maybe make
like we're a defense here instead of go ahead, take
take whatever you want. Twelve fifteen. We don't care. Now
you call timeout because now there is the real threat
of a hail mare. So no, I don't let Matt
(09:34):
eberfluse off the hook here. And I got Caleb Williams,
who is a rookie, who was yelling at the defense
to come up. He is looking at what Jayden Daniels
would be looking at if he were the quarterback. We're
gonna give you twelve to fifteen yards. We're gonna let
you get out of bounds, and you got two seconds left. Now, Okay,
(09:57):
the odds of this being completed probably astronomical, but it
was completed. You helped the odds for the opposing team.
I you know, the Bears really worked hard to lose
this game. They did, but I can't have Tyreek Stevenson
(10:18):
engaging with the crowd. Who are you, by the way,
You're not even the best defensive back on the team.
Do your job, But Matt Eberflus call a timeout. There's nothing.
How many times do we see a coach call a
timeout and you go, oh my god, I mean really,
(10:39):
and then call another timeout. Your job is to prepare
your team, over prepare your team, and to remind them
this is what we need to do. Hey, this is
what they're going to do. Who's doing this? How about this?
And you normally don't have a coach who probably says
this like, hey, don't engage with the fans until after
the game. Okay, I'm looking at you.
Speaker 5 (11:02):
Yeah, Paulin, if you.
Speaker 10 (11:03):
Were Chicago Bears' ownership and management. Would you make the
decision on the coaching staff now, no matter what the
result is the rest of the season, Like you know
what I'm saying, Like make I wouldn't.
Speaker 5 (11:15):
Have brought him back.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
You either bring him back and sign him, or you
don't bring him back.
Speaker 7 (11:20):
I guess what I'm saying.
Speaker 10 (11:21):
Like, let's say they win a couple of games and
they stay in playoff contention. Do you say to yourself,
this is not the group that's to lead this team
to a super Bowl. Let's make the decision in our
heads now and stick with it in January.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
But I haven't seen Caleb Williams be great. I've seen
Jayden Daniels be great. I've seen Drake may have signs
of he could be a really good quarterback. Bo Nicks,
I've seen a little bit of that. I'm and look,
the bar is higher for Caleb Williams. I expect him
to be really good. And their team is better than
(11:53):
the commander's talent wise, in my opinion, I don't know
if that's offensive coordinator, who's that Shane Waldron? Is he
doing a good job? So I think it's if you're
firing the coach. You're firing the staff, and I think
that's what you have to kind of process. Are we
going to have a complete overhaul here? And the worst
(12:14):
thing that can happen for a rookie quarterback is you
keep changing coaches and offensive coordinators. You got three or
four that you know Baker Mayfield went through that. It's
like here we go and then here we go. You
need consistency then you have a chance. But what I've seen,
I feel like the Bears know what they're doing already
without doing it.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
Like the Cowboys. I feel like they know what they're doing.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
The Jags, I feel like they know what they're doing
with their coaching situation. It's just we got half the
season to go, and you know they're owners who are
like God, if we start winning, then I gotta keep like.
Speaker 5 (12:51):
It's a weird feeling. Let's fire him now?
Speaker 2 (12:55):
Why because I don't want to go on a winning streak,
and then I got to keep him.
Speaker 8 (12:59):
Yes, Mark, you took the words right out of my mouth.
That's exactly what I was going to say.
Speaker 5 (13:04):
Yes, Paulie, it does seem is it fair to say?
Speaker 10 (13:06):
Though we always discussed this in February, the most attractive jobs. Yeah,
you got a rookie quarterback on a rookie contract who
does show promise and a pretty solid roster. It's got
to be in the upper echelon of job openings if
it came up.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
Well, I don't know if Jacksonville is a great job,
because I don't know if they truly have a franchise quarterback.
But they're paying him, and that's really that's the key.
You're paying him that kind of money, and you know,
Caleb Williams, if I can keep him, don't have to
extend him yet, then you know, that's a big advantage
(13:42):
you can build your roster.
Speaker 5 (13:43):
That's why when you look at the Niners, the Niners.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
Window is closing rapidly because once I pay that quarterback
fifty million dollars, now all of a sudden, I can't
have Fred Warner, I can't have nice things. Then I
might have to lose somebody. I might have to trade somebody.
This is it's their window this year, and they've been
banged up. I mean the fact that they're banged up,
but they're still, you know, a team to beat in
(14:08):
the NFC. I mean, it's a testament to how much
talent depth they have.
Speaker 5 (14:12):
Yes.
Speaker 6 (14:12):
Do you think though that the forty nine ers look
at the Chiefs and Kyle Shanahan is more like, well
the window as long as as long as I'm here,
I'm the window.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
Well are you saying, because Andy Reid and Kyle Shanahan
are similar.
Speaker 6 (14:29):
If it's like Andy Reid has his quarterback, and then okay,
we could figure the rest out. Kyle Shanahan might have
his quarterback. We could figure the rest out. Let's get
a strong defense, let's get whatever they The Chiefs seem
to be able to plug in people all over the place.
The forty nine Ers, certainly this weekend showed the depth
that they have given all of the injuries and still
looked great. You know, maybe maybe I could see that
(14:52):
it's not a trap. But when you're the head coach,
you're like, but I'm the window. I'm not worried about
this little thing here.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
I think the window is Patrick Mahomes. Andy Reid is
a Hall of Famer. It helps if you have the guy.
I can have the best game plan. Ever, if you
don't go out and execute, it doesn't matter how good
my game plan is. And I think that's the window
can rock perty go out and execute the way Patrick
(15:21):
Mahomes does.
Speaker 5 (15:23):
As you move forward, I.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
Mean, as we said when Mahomes signed this deal, I said,
that is an unbelievably team friendly deal. He will be
underpaid quickly, and he is now. I don't I'm sure
they're going to tear this contract up and give him
something and extend it and all those things, but even
then he'll probably still be underpaid.
Speaker 5 (15:45):
Yes, Marv, do you.
Speaker 8 (15:46):
Think this Kyle Shanhan situation might be like Tony Dungee
in Tampa Bay, where it's like you're on the cusp,
but we need somebody to take us over the hump,
like when Tim Big got John Gruden.
Speaker 2 (15:59):
I don't know the mindset there at all, but uh,
I just you know. The point I'm trying to make
is that it feels like that window is wide open,
and then all of a sudden it's not wide open,
and there's maybe a crack in the window pane, and
then all of a sudden you're like, does McCaffrey play
(16:21):
this feels like this stays with him? How long can
George Kittle go out there? Debo gets banged up? You
has got a long way back from an ACL Trent Williams,
How long do you keep him? I love Fred Warner.
I think he's a Hall of Famer. You know you're
going to be able to keep these guys.
Speaker 10 (16:41):
Yeah, Paulie saw a couple of reports this morning that
they're poised to have Christian McCaffrey back for Week ten
against the Buccaneers.
Speaker 2 (16:48):
Poised, poised, but he can come back. But does the
injury come back? This feels like it is something that
is going to stay with him the rest of his career.
When we come back, a pie to the bet and
Kevin Malar will join us. Also, we'll play the game man?
Did Blank need a game?
Speaker 6 (17:07):
Like?
Speaker 5 (17:07):
Then? All of that coming up.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
In case you're wondering, the last nine teams to fall
behind O three in the World Series have lost Game four.
The last time a team won Game four after falling
behind O three, you have to go back to nineteen
seventy with the Cincinnati Reds losing to Baltimore and they
lost in five games. A couple of phone calls. Then
we'll talk to Kevin Malar from the MLB network. Yes, Paul,
(17:45):
I still have the pie in the face.
Speaker 7 (17:47):
Oh you'd like it?
Speaker 10 (17:48):
Okay, are you ready? Yes, this is NFL related. I've
been thinking about this. Okay, here it is, and I'll
up the bet to O. Will take two.
Speaker 7 (17:56):
Pies and throw out one to the person who bets me. Okay.
Speaker 10 (18:00):
The next head coach of the Chicago Bears will be
Ben Johnson of the Detroit Lions, no doubt, one of
the first hires.
Speaker 7 (18:07):
Okay. Anybody want a piece and you get the field,
every other person on.
Speaker 5 (18:11):
There, including if they don't.
Speaker 7 (18:13):
Correct, if they don't fire their head coach.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
Does anybody want a piece of that? With Ben Johnson,
the Lions offensive coordinator. Anybody, it's a strong pick. Yeah,
a strong pick. Yeah, he'll be the leading candidate. Although
you can say Belichick, but Belichick would you know? I'm
trying to figure out if Belichick coaches again, and I
said last year I didn't think he coached again, But
(18:39):
because he's so successful in the media now, I don't
know if coming back to try to prove what Brady
did when he went to Tampa Bay also to become
the all time victory leader in NFL history, passing Don Shula.
I don't know how important that is to him, and
I don't know if you'd get an honest answer from him,
(19:00):
even though now he's media friendly. But Mike Rabel, he's
going to be out there. But Ben Johnson turned down jobs,
or maybe he scared some teams off because he did
ask for a lot of money, like he wanted to
be paid as one of the highest paid.
Speaker 5 (19:17):
Coaches in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
And Dallas, to me, would be interesting because Jerry is
offensive minded and you got an offensive coordinator coming in there.
Speaker 5 (19:28):
But if you, I mean, if.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Chicago got him, considering the way Detroit's offense has been that,
that'd be a good coup there. All right, let me
see Moe in Arizona. Hi, Mo, what's on your mind today?
Speaker 11 (19:44):
Wanting Dan Dennett's Well, as far as the jerseys goes,
Greaters is going trace you don't go. They just guarantee
they wouldn't even let me and my parents in when
I was a kid wearing a Nineers jersey. But I
got to jump in on the guy who was crying
about fat Joe. Trust me, if they had won that game.
They'd been parading them around, dressing up like them like Grimace.
So stop with your crime. Yeah, I mean that's all
(20:06):
I got.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
You guys have a good all right, Well, thank you,
cheer up. You know, Fat Joe I just went, oh, okay,
I get didn't. I wasn't offended by it. I didn't go,
are you kidding? Fat Joe. I didn't know if he
had any relationship with the Yankees other than as he
you know, from the Bronx.
Speaker 5 (20:26):
Okay, fine, how about Jennifer Lopez.
Speaker 12 (20:33):
Jenny from the Bronx with the block.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
Yes, yeah, maybe we get hurt in there. I mean
desperate times, desperate measures.
Speaker 8 (20:41):
A rod can watch her.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
WHOA, Sorry, that'd be bad.
Speaker 5 (20:49):
It'd be good, it'd be good, but bad.
Speaker 2 (20:53):
Kevin Malaw MLB network analysts co host of Intentional Talk,
and you can see him with Ryan Dempster that'll be
every day at five Eastern during the World Series and
he of course won the World Series championship with the
Red Sox back in four Kevin, great to talk to
you again. Looking at this matchup. When the World Series started,
(21:15):
I thought the Yankee starting pitching was going to be
a big advantage. That has not been the case. Why
do you think that is? Do you agree?
Speaker 13 (21:27):
Yeah, it's funny, you could have flipped a coin. I
don't think the Yankees had the advantage going in. I
think everybody was so excited to see the series and
see who's gonna like the layoff or whatever. The problem is.
You need the six, seven, eight nine guys. It's like
every postseason to step up. And you have to agree
(21:48):
that Tommy Edmond and Andrew Freeman's pickup of that young
man has really been a big difference for this organization,
aside from Freddy Freeman just being Freddy Freeman.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
John Shomby, who's calling the game for U S Pien Radio,
said yesterday, if you take out the top three hitters
for the Yankees and top three for the Dodgers, that's
the difference. That's the depth that you're talking about, that
they can make up for these other players if they're
not playing well. The Yankee lineup can't do that. How
do you get Aaron Judge going, It's.
Speaker 13 (22:21):
Not a matter of how you get it. It's a
hard game. He's struggling at the wrong time.
Speaker 12 (22:25):
Danny.
Speaker 13 (22:25):
I mean, that's the problem, right, It's like me and
you going to playing Augusta. We're all excited, and then
your golf game sucks that day. You're like, can it
suck at the home course with my buddies. He's in
a spot right now, and you saw him. He had
better at bats like he saw him that first back.
He missed that fastball, he's just mist and he was
able to take a couple breaking balls. He knows the
(22:47):
game plan, he knows the hard end. And then they
threw five so off the way. It's going slower, and
it's so hard when you are trying to get that big, huge,
four hundred and fifty foot home run. A line drive
basic right Bilby would be beneficial for him, but it's
so hard in the moment.
Speaker 5 (23:03):
Buddy, how do you pitch to Freddie Freeman?
Speaker 13 (23:06):
I stopped throwing cutters inside. I stopped throwing fastballs inside.
I stopped playing the whole trick him inside. I would
make him try to beat me away. I know there's
a short portion in right field and Yankee Stadium. Freddie
Freeman is so quick inside. And you know what, and
I've always said this, I've said this all year. I
think he's the best hitter in baseball. His approach is
left center, not trying to hit a home run. Give
(23:27):
me sixty doubles and twenty five homers.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
It feels like all of his home runs are off
the same pitch, or at least in the same location.
Speaker 13 (23:36):
Yeah, I mean that's where he goes right, short and
quick to the baseball and he just snaps it. But
he finishes high. He's got great drills his approach.
Speaker 12 (23:45):
I love.
Speaker 13 (23:45):
I have a high school kid that looks like him,
like his Torso goes up to his basically pecks, I
mean his legs, his pecks, they're Torso's about that big.
And it's funny because he sits gap to gap and
if you know, most hitters don't do that. They're looking
for twenty five to thirty five great swings a year
in juke twelve, strikeout one hundred and eighty, not Freddie Freeman.
(24:08):
So I appreciate his game plan even during the shift.
Now we've stopped the shift, he's still a three hundred hitter.
Speaker 2 (24:15):
Kevin Malar MLB network analyst, co host of Intentional Talk,
and of course, won the World Series with the Red
Sox back in four. All right, you got them the
Cowboy up back in four. What's your pep talk to
the Yankees pre game tonight?
Speaker 12 (24:30):
The great news for the Yankees.
Speaker 13 (24:31):
About seven days ago, Netflix came out with a show
called The Comeback. I'll tell you right now, they're not
a team that can't do it. Would it shock you?
It's not an underdog like team. They just need to
start with a game tonight or this could be a sweep.
Speaker 2 (24:48):
What episode of the four part episodes with Netflix would
you show to the Yankees prior to tonight's game?
Speaker 13 (24:56):
Probably somewhere in the episode two. If I was you know,
and I don't know if this ha or not, but
I have Bere Jeter on site, I would have two
or three dudes, whether it's whoever that.
Speaker 12 (25:08):
Is on your team.
Speaker 13 (25:09):
But if I'm Booneye, I bring in DJ and I say, hey, dude,
give me five minutes with these guys. Let's just play baseball.
Let's play attention to details. We have to run the
bases better, we have to play baseball better, we have
to block balls. But we have to focus every pitch,
one thing about Derek Jeter in the big stage, attention
to details. Like it's like a Nick Saban football team.
You're not going to have forty seven holding calls or
(25:30):
you're taking out of the game. My thing is just
stay with me during the seven oh eight start in
snake time eight oh eight Eastern time?
Speaker 2 (25:38):
Okay, is Jeter allowed to do that since he's working
for five I mean he's working the game. Do you
think his bosses would have a problem if he.
Speaker 12 (25:47):
Wantshy wouldn't be able?
Speaker 5 (25:51):
I think is uh? I think the look isn't good.
Speaker 12 (25:56):
Well, no one knows. You don't have to know.
Speaker 2 (25:59):
You're going to oh after tonight's game if they win,
they're going to be like, man, we got this great
pep talk from Cheeter.
Speaker 5 (26:05):
Captain came in and gave us a great pep talk.
Speaker 13 (26:07):
Here, are there any more secrets in this game anymore?
In this world society? Can we put our phones away?
Do we have to tax and tweet Instagram that I'm
with the Gap? But no, Danny, I'm talking about with
nobody knowing. I need you here for five minutes.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
Wait wait, wait, you were back in four There was
no social media, or we would have known everything about
you guys doing shots before the game. We would have
known about what was the naked pull ups by Johnny Damon.
We would have known all of that stuff.
Speaker 13 (26:33):
That's why you got to have that boys club height
knitch group.
Speaker 12 (26:37):
And you can talk about twenty years later.
Speaker 13 (26:38):
But my point is, I just think that the Yankees
have to they have to focus on tension of details,
the home runs. They gotta hit home runs. They that's
how they score runs. You can't beat somebody or not,
and you got to get on base. I mean, they
just need the bottom of the lineup like Chas. They
have not hit with running score positions. So you can
tip your hats their daughters, or you can say that
they're struggling.
Speaker 2 (26:56):
The Otawni situation. Did you see anything that he was
favoring his shoulder last night at the plate?
Speaker 13 (27:02):
I saw his swings look good. You can tell like
the swings and misses kind of hurt. The jogging hurts.
He got to trot around the basis with Freddie Freeman's
home run, which is good news. It was alarming after
he grounded out when he ran back and he was
kind of like this, But I'll tell you right now,
he's a tough guy. I mean, he wants to be
out there and just his presence, what he's see twenty
some of my pitches last night, whether he gets a
hit or not. He's three two, he's three two, he's
(27:24):
three two, and their stress.
Speaker 2 (27:27):
If the season ends tonight, how are we going to
remember Otani this year?
Speaker 12 (27:33):
Probably he'll have to do this for a while.
Speaker 13 (27:37):
But this is probably one of the greatest hitters that
were getting a chance to see. I'm not a big
fan of saying, hey, he's had a year or two
or three they're superstars, because I mean the pool Holtzes
and the Manny ramiers Is and the Cabreras like they
did it long time, long, ten year, thirteen hundred. But
I'll tell you I've never seen anything like it. His
discipline to plate when he kind of you to see
(27:58):
him walk in. He doesn't swing a whole lot of balls,
and he's violent early in the count.
Speaker 2 (28:03):
But if I said you can have big Poppy at
the plate or Otani at the plate, wow wow.
Speaker 13 (28:09):
A big Poppy was probably the greatest postseason big RBI
guy in the history of baseball. My opinion, I'm taking
Poppy that he was a gangster.
Speaker 2 (28:19):
Great to talk to you as always, and thanks for
joining us, you too, DP, Thank you, Kevin Mala MLB Network,
Andrew in Washington, Hi, Andrew.
Speaker 14 (28:30):
Hey, good morning, Dan Denne's things for taking my call.
I do have a comment and a stat of the day.
I wish you would have clarified with Kevin Malar in
the documentary as mentioned last week, he was on a
segment with you in Sports Center and you asked him
who do you want to throw you the ball? He
answered as if you said, who do you think will
throw you the ball? And I think that's what no.
(28:52):
Mare's downfall happened in the four season, but it worked
out for the Red Sox and they won the World Series. Anyways,
my stat of the day is this, the Jets did
enter the darkness that no other team has ever done
by losing a game when scoring at least twenty points,
having zero turnovers, and holding their opponents to less than
two hundred and fifty yards before this NFL team for
(29:12):
seven hundred and fifty six and oh before the Jets
lost on Sunday.
Speaker 5 (29:18):
Whoo cow.
Speaker 3 (29:20):
Stall of a Day, Stand of a Day Stata to
day stand outa day.
Speaker 5 (29:26):
This is the Stele of the Day.
Speaker 2 (29:30):
Stat of to Day brought to you by Pennedi America,
the official trading cards of the Dan Patrick Show. DraftKings
just gave me the updated NFL MVP odds. Josh Allen,
Lamar Jackson tied then Patrick Mahomes, Jared Goff, and Jalen
Hurts is a distant fifth odds to win Coach of
(29:54):
the Year. No surprise here, Dan quinn, followed by Kevin
O'Connell with the Vikings, Sean Payton.
Speaker 5 (30:00):
Harbaugh, Andy Reid.
Speaker 2 (30:02):
Andy Reid's done an unbelievable job coaching unbelievable. It's one
of those like Chuck Nole never won Coach of the Year, Like, yeah,
but he coaches the Steelers. Here, will Derrick Henry break
the NFL single season rushing record? Yes, plus six hundred. Okay,
(30:24):
here's something nobody is asking, but I'm going to ask this.
You can have Derrick Henry this year or Saquon Barkley's
numbers this year, because Saquon Barkley projected out to over
eighteen hundred yards twenty one hundred all purpose yards. Derrick
(30:45):
Henry has been wonderful and this might be a situation
where Derrick Henry is the right player for the Ravens. Well,
Saquon Barkley is the right running back for the Eagles,
But Saquon Barkley quietly having a pretty impressive season at
least so far.
Speaker 5 (31:02):
Let me see, what do we have?
Speaker 2 (31:04):
David arkansa but they don't call him David Arkansas.
Speaker 5 (31:08):
They call him.
Speaker 15 (31:09):
They call me Pittsburgh Dave. And I'm laid up with
ankle surgery, I'm laid off from work and female wise,
well no, but I'm six and two and I've got
everything to be happy about. And I've got to wonder,
what is the deal you were kind of talking earlier
(31:32):
about with the Chicago Matt Eberfusser and basically the general
idea of teams, and they're just changing coaches, changing regimes
too quickly. Why can't somebody take the formula that Pittsburgh
has done. We're the only team that has done anything
like that that has kept people around. Let them work
(31:55):
it out and they will get there. And it's clear
they at all three coaches since nineteen sixty nine, all
three of them have won Super Bowls. They've never been
bad since chruck mull got there. I think their lowest
win total has been like six, and that was a
(32:15):
couple times back in the eighties. They're just never bad.
Why can't anybody get involved in that kind of thing.
Speaker 2 (32:22):
Well, you got to find the right person, and you
have to have the right owner. So you have ownership
who is not a billionaire who's used to firing people
and they want immediate results. Billionaires want results, and if not,
everybody's disposable. Start there. The Steelers have a patient ownership group.
(32:48):
Now find your guy. But you know, you got to
find a person. It's not just boy he's a really
good coach. You got to find somebody who dictates the
locker room, gets along with people, can be tough and
he needs to. You know, Cower and Tomlin, they were tough.
They're tough when they need to be tough. Chuck Knowle
was just tough and probably too tough at times, certainly
(33:11):
with Terry Brownshaw.
Speaker 5 (33:12):
But you got results. Ownership stays out of the way.
Speaker 2 (33:16):
They don't hold press conferences, they don't do radio shows,
they don't do any of that nonsense. They just we
own the team. We employ these people to do their job,
and we let them do their job. But you got
to find you know, Chuck Nole and Bill Kauer and
Mike Tomlin. I mean Mike Tomlin wasn't even the leading
candidate to get the job, but he overwhelmed them in
(33:39):
the interview. Who knew about Bill Kauer? No one did.
The Steelers did, Chuck Nole?
Speaker 5 (33:48):
Who knew.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
But it's hiring the right person who happens to be
a great coach, not we hired a great coach. We
don't know how he is as a you know, bedside
manor as a person. They're hiring great people and they've
been very fortunate. It's not easy because you overthink it.
It's like picking a quarterback or picking a coach. There
(34:11):
is no you know, it's an inexact science. How does
this guy work? You know these guys who are great
offensive defensive coordinators, and I go, that doesn't mean they're.
Speaker 5 (34:20):
Going to be a great head coach. It doesn't Like all.
Speaker 2 (34:24):
Of Belichick's assistants, they weren't good coaches. They were really
good coordinators. You've got to be wired differently to be
a head coach coordinator. I just take care of this.
Don't have to meet with the media. This is all
I have to worry about. When you're the coach, you
got to deal with a guy who says he's too
tired and needs to come out of a game or
(34:44):
a guy who is engaging with the fans on the
road and forgets his assignment on the final play of
the game. It's just, you know, it's really really it's
a crapshoot, trying to find the right guy for the
right team at the right time. We'll take a break.
When we come we will play the game. Man, Did
Blank need a game like that?
Speaker 1 (35:04):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio in the iHeartRadio w APP.
Speaker 2 (35:15):
We have college football tonight New Mexico State versus FIU,
Louisiana against Texas State and Louisiana Tech versus SAM Houston Houston. Hellju,
All right, now it's time to play.
Speaker 5 (35:32):
Man.
Speaker 2 (35:32):
Did Blank need a game like that? So once again,
you fill in the blank? Man, Did Blank need a
game like that?
Speaker 7 (35:46):
Any sport?
Speaker 5 (35:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (35:47):
It could be life, Yeah, the game of life? Todd,
I'm gonna let you go.
Speaker 12 (35:53):
Man, Did Kyler Murray need a game like that?
Speaker 10 (35:56):
Leading the Cardinals the victory in the closing moments of
Miami Arizona four and four, tide for first with the
Niners and Seahawks in the NFC West twenty six thirty six,
three hundred and sevenyards two tens.
Speaker 5 (36:05):
I ain't seed o Connor Man. Did Blank need a
game like that?
Speaker 1 (36:08):
Man?
Speaker 6 (36:09):
Did Nick Sirianni need a game like that? Dude humiliated
himself a couple of weeks ago. They've had a couple
of ugly games, a couple of ugly wins and still
getting criticized.
Speaker 5 (36:17):
But things kind of clicked.
Speaker 6 (36:19):
Even though the Bengals are down, that's still a solid win.
They're getting healthier. Yeah, he really needed a week like that,
Marvin Man.
Speaker 5 (36:28):
Did Blank need a game like that?
Speaker 8 (36:30):
Man? Did Alabama need a game like that? They needed
a nice clean win after losing to Tennessee and then
having like a real close call against South Carolina. They
needed a nice clean win. It gets a quality opponent
like Missouri.
Speaker 10 (36:44):
Paul our first two time winner and back to back winner. Man,
did Russell Wilson need a game like that?
Speaker 7 (36:50):
Stay with me?
Speaker 10 (36:51):
Even though he was my pick last week, everyone would
have jumped right off the Russ bandwagon if there is
a Russ bandwagon.
Speaker 7 (36:58):
If he had a bad night on national Tea against
the Giants.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
Okay, all right, I was going to take Russell Wilson Junior.
The third standalone game played pretty well. Was it one
of those Oh he got lucky with some ricochets or
his receivers helped him out. I thought he played pretty well.
Now it's against the Giants once again, degree of difficulty.
(37:22):
But you need a clean game.
Speaker 5 (37:24):
That's it.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
And they're in the mix. That's all you can ask.
If you're a Steeler fan, you're in the mix. Rob
in Orlando, Hi, Rob, what's on your mind?
Speaker 1 (37:34):
Dad?
Speaker 15 (37:34):
Pitsburg?
Speaker 11 (37:34):
Dave had me all jacked up earlier.
Speaker 16 (37:36):
Man, I'll tell you what. I'm sitting here looking at
my retro Bubby Brister jersey. So we have had some
bad seasons, but to his point, we've only had seven
losing seasons in nineteen seventy two. So I'd also like
to know why, know what was like Tomlin not considered
for Coach.
Speaker 14 (37:53):
Of the Year.
Speaker 2 (37:54):
Sure, I mean, I'm only giving you what DraftKings gave me.
Andy and dan Quinn. You could make the case. Dan
Quinn right now the big favorite for coach of the
Year in Washington. Andy reach done an unbelievable job. It's
I think the more we've seen of Andy Reid and
his teams and therefore you kind of forget about him.
(38:16):
And as I said, I don't think Chuck Nole ever
won Coach of the Year. There's certain coaches who just
never got credit.
Speaker 8 (38:23):
Yeah, Mark, Coach of the Year usually goes to a
team that kind of came out of nowhere. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (38:28):
Yeah, so it doesn't go.
Speaker 8 (38:29):
To you know, I think Phil Jackson probably has one
Coach of the Year award.
Speaker 2 (38:32):
He might have two, But you're right, he won eleven
titles in his career. Well that includes as a player,
but being coach of the year. It's like we're gonna
give Jordan MVP because he was gonna win championships. Well,
if you're the coach of the team that wins championships,
shouldn't you win Coach of the year as well? Fresh
(38:55):
in Milwaukee, Hi Fresh, Welcome back, Hey Fresh Fresh by Fresh.
Speaker 5 (39:10):
Steven in Michigan. Hi Steve. What's on your mind today?
Speaker 17 (39:14):
Not much. I'm actually calm because of like something we
were talking about earlier was fan kind of violence. I
remember being a youngster and uh, this is when the
this is when the Silver Dome was still there instead
of Ford Field, and I was at a Green Bay
game and I was with my father and the guy
(39:37):
below us a couple of seats down had this. It
was kind of when far won the Super Bowl, so
it was like not too long after that, and he
was wearing this like cardboard Lombardi trophy that obviously he
wrapped up in tinfoil, and it was like it was
(39:58):
probably a good two feet high, and you could hear
the fans behind him just yelling at him, and one
fan just took it off and beat the Bejesus out
of him with his Lombardi trophy. And my dad just
looked at me. He's like, that's why you never give
anybody a reason at a divisional game.
Speaker 5 (40:18):
Oh, divisional game.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
Absolutely, But if you're going to go in there with
a mock super Bowl trophy, Lombardi trophy, you're just asking
for it. You are you got a prop that you're wearing,
You're asking for it. Jersey, they might let you slide.
Phil Jackson only one Coach of the Year award, Marvin,
I'm going to give you a bloop on that one.
(40:41):
Big Mike Gollick will join us. What was worse, Anthony
Richardson taking himself out of the game, or the defensive
back for the Bears, engaging with the fans in Washington,
