Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
We did it. We made it to a Friday. It's
a meat Friday, and we're fully assembled. Paulie's back after
two days. Oh, Paulie's not fully assembled as he only
has one eye. The other one has a patch on it,
so which is becoming By the way, I like it.
You got a flannel patch on your left eye on brand. Okay,
(00:29):
did Marvin coming back from having surgery when he had
what you have wisdom teeth taken? Yes, and you came
back same day. Did that impact you? Coming back two
days after being uh well, in the hands of a surgeon.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
All right, of course, yeah, the Marvin situation is always
looming for all of us, kind of teeth thing. But yeah,
I was, couldn't get back earlier. Did my best but
not bad?
Speaker 4 (00:56):
Okay, well, we're glad to have you, yes, Seaton. The
real question is did Marvin reach out to you while
you were out?
Speaker 5 (01:02):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (01:03):
Damn uh.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Yes.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
The answer is they paused. Yes, he was almost everybody
here reached out everything.
Speaker 6 (01:15):
Everyone in this room. Oh, okay and most of the
guys and back then.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
So did Marvin learn from not reaching out to me?
After I had my traumatic shoulders.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
Yeah, that's the question, is Marvin, why did you feel
they need to reach out to Paul about damn?
Speaker 7 (01:27):
I truly care about Paul and that day.
Speaker 6 (01:29):
I mean no, no, no, no say that, no, no, no, I'll
say that.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
No, Hey, I get it front row, you know camaraderie.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Marvin though delayed his reach out until Thursday afternoon. It
was not Tuesday night.
Speaker 7 (01:40):
Of course.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Yes, you had this uh traumatic moment with your eye
and your retina and a lot of bad stuff happening.
But this was your bad eye. We were worried that
was your good eye.
Speaker 6 (01:51):
Yeah, there's miss misreports. I guess about the good eye.
Speaker 8 (01:54):
Early reports was that it was a good eye.
Speaker 6 (01:56):
I know, if it's a good eye, you never would
have seen me. Again, no pun intend.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
You would to see us.
Speaker 8 (02:00):
You wouldn't.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
We would have seen you. But yeah, but you probably
couldn't have done your job.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
No.
Speaker 6 (02:06):
Now, if the bad, if the good I goes, I'm gone.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
I was a little confused that apparently having surgery on
your I means you can't talk on the radio. I
didn't understand why Paul had to miss any work, but
I guess that's just me.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
I don't know.
Speaker 6 (02:19):
So the doctor said, this is a weird thing.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
You know, maybe they don't have phones there where you are.
I'm just letting you know you did get roughed up
behind the scenes here, as you would come to expect
so much. So when Tyler goes, is it okay if
we have rib eyes today?
Speaker 6 (02:36):
That's funny.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Can we have black eyed pe Southern style? I go yes, yes, yeah,
that's our meat. Friday, we have smoked rib eyes. We
have Southern style black eyed pee. That's great. Who isn't
better than we do? No?
Speaker 6 (02:56):
Yeah, so they I couldn't do.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
I couldn't get in Wait, are we still talking about
I mean we got to move on, Pauline.
Speaker 6 (03:01):
That's it.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Yeah, I mean we got it. It's not like I
talk about my shoulder every day. I'm doing fine, Thank you,
thank you. Marvin keeps reaching out, Hey, everything, Okay, you
need a sponge bath. I'm like, it's too late. It's
too late for that.
Speaker 7 (03:18):
I was trying to reach out.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Now you're trying to. Yeah. Stat of the Day brought
to you by Penini America, the official trading cards of

Make every Sunday a slider Sunday, the Great Charles Barkley.
(03:41):
A little bit later on in the program, and we'll
get an idea. Who's a buyer idea?
Speaker 6 (03:47):
I wow, it's a theme show. Oh wow, sorry, back
to you.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Well, we'll get a better idea. Who is the buyer
or seller? At the trade deadline?
Speaker 6 (04:00):
I'll take a look at the college football in that shows.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Yeah, don't blink, for this show is going to be over.
How about my jets they're back?
Speaker 5 (04:11):
Oh by the Tiger? Gary Wilson.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Okay, how to get in to lund? Fritzy's only working
two hours today, so I'm just letting the audience know
it's usually Friday, Fritzy. Now it's two hours, and then
he gets to leave because apparently he has to go see,
you know, his daughter in college. The reason why she
(04:37):
went away to college is to get away from you.
Do you understand how it works? Yes? You're like, hey,
I'm thinking about going down to Wake Forest again.
Speaker 5 (04:45):
What did you do it here Dad.
Speaker 6 (04:47):
The funny thing is she's home for the weekend.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Whoa walk around walk around campus? Alrighty, here we go.
Let's get started here, so Charles will join us in
an hour from now. The Jets beat the Texans and
they're now three and six. Are they back? I don't know,
but Aaron Rodgers seems to think that they are back.
Speaker 7 (05:11):
Kind of season on the line there in second half.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
Obviously we wouldn't have been mathematically eliminated, but mentally to
go to two and seven would have been real tough.
Speaker 7 (05:21):
Hopefully, let's get this confidence so that it can be anybody.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
Just we feel like we could. Yes, And I don't know.
If you're a Jets fan, you go, that was a
great win or a frustrating win because and hear me
out with that frustrating win. Why can't we be doing
that every week? Well? It helps if you're going against
a bad offensive line like the Texans have. They've given
(05:44):
up the second most sacks. We're waiting for CJ. Stroud
to be last year CJ. Stroud. That's not going to happen. Now,
Nico Collins comes back, they lose Stefan Diggs. Mixing's been
wonderful for them, but that is not a good offensive line.
And the Jets they got a pass rush and they
made him pay. The number of sacks, also, the number
of hurries, the number of hits that he took. The
(06:06):
Jets should have won that by a couple of touchdowns.
They were that much better. I'm going to take you
back to Rex Ryan. Yesterday. Rex was on the show
Final Hour and we talked about the Jets being favored
by the Texans and we're thinking the Jets aren't very good.
They're favored against a playoff team by one and a half.
And here's the former Jets head coach Rex Ryan.
Speaker 9 (06:29):
The Jets should dominate this game. I mean, when you
look at it on paper, Houston's really I mean they're
really struggling to protect the quarterback right now. No Nico Collins.
Now you don't have Digs out there, so you got
one receiver to throw to. I mean, so the defense
should dominate for the Jets. And then on the flip side,
(06:52):
you have all this talent over there. I mean, when
Mike Williams is not even playing for you, you know,
I mean, you get Devonte Adams, Garrett Wilson got two
great backs on paper. You know Aaron Rodgers is at quarterback.
You should dominate this game, but you don't play it
on paper. And that's why the spread is only a
(07:13):
point and a half when it should be about you
know eight, you know seven or eight it looks.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
Like and they won by eight twenty one thirteen. So
that's Rex Ryan from yesterday's show. By the way, Aaron
Rodgers and DeVante Adams hooked up for their seventy seventh touchdown.
If you combine regular season postseason, that's the most of
any active passer to receiver combination.
Speaker 10 (07:37):
Whoa stead of the day, Stall of a day, stead
out to day, Stanta a day.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
This is the stant of the day. Staut of the day.
Rough to you by Panini America. The official trading cards
of the Dan Patrick Show eight seven seven three DP
show operators sitting by Tyler taking your phone calls good morning.
If you're watching on Peacock, you can see all of
this unfold. If you want to see a man with
one good eye and a flannel patch on his eye,
(08:08):
you can tune in. Boy. That's the reason to sign
it for Peacock if I've ever heard one. Also are
radio affiliates around the country. Dodgers have their parade today.
We'll discuss that. A lot of football coming up this weekend,
you know. Going back to the Jets, the reason why
I think this is a frustrating win is they should
be this team. They should be five and four. At worse,
(08:30):
they're three and six. At five and four, you're formidable.
At three and six, you're kind of like the Bengals.
You have no room for error, and the Bengals should
be a really good team. Now you start to look
at some of these teams, are the Bengals as seller?
That's what I want to know. You get to this point,
the importance of this week's games on who's going to
(08:54):
be buying and who's going to be selling. That's what
I'm going to keep an eye on, all right, Seaton
Poll question today, what are we starting now with?
Speaker 8 (09:01):
We're not playing buyer seller today, are we?
Speaker 7 (09:06):
No?
Speaker 2 (09:06):
I don't think so. I think we're playing in or out? Yes,
and the most must win game of the weekend.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
Okay, because I've been right now. My brain only processes
things in terms of segments. So as soon as you
say something like whoa wait, is that a segment? That
we're doing right now?
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Are we doing well? When I was at ESPN, everything
had to have a name, like the segment had to
have a name if you were going to bring in
an analyst.
Speaker 8 (09:31):
Kind of great.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
Yeah, well.
Speaker 8 (09:34):
It's kind of great.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
Yeah, the Corps Light six pack of questions, that's what's
why with that? That's great? I know. And you bring
in John Clayton or Sean Sulisbury And here's John Clayton
our course light six pack of questions. We're going four downs?
Speaker 7 (09:50):
All right?
Speaker 2 (09:51):
What what are we starting now with?
Speaker 7 (09:53):
Well?
Speaker 4 (09:53):
I think over compensating because he's missing an hour of
the show.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Ty to sentim pull questions. I don't like the over compensation, Todd.
I want you to be the same every day.
Speaker 5 (10:04):
I think I am.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
I'm not every Day's the super Bowl.
Speaker 11 (10:07):
Few days ago I thought I sent like four or
five pool questions. I'm getting to bed rap here.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
But the super Bowl doesn't end an hour early.
Speaker 5 (10:13):
It doesn't.
Speaker 11 (10:14):
Yeah, I don't think this is a radular habit with
me when I'm looking for ways to shock my responsibilities
on how I can be here at the minimal number
of hours possible or anything like that. You painted this
picture of like any chance you get. You're looking for
an hour off here, a day off there.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
Oh my god, you're flying around.
Speaker 5 (10:29):
You're visiting your kids in college once in a while.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
You look a guest.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
Are you that sad a little bit? Oh? God?
Speaker 5 (10:38):
Because I got a thousand?
Speaker 2 (10:39):
Sweet?
Speaker 7 (10:40):
Why don't you stick up for yourself?
Speaker 5 (10:41):
There's such bullies.
Speaker 7 (10:41):
What do you take that stuff?
Speaker 5 (10:42):
And then I'm like, I don't know, I think it's
joking around.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
I guess reading social media should help this.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
P Yeah, don't read social media.
Speaker 5 (10:51):
Why is it giving you so much crap for taking
an hour off?
Speaker 7 (10:54):
You're always here two in the morning.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
Where where did we come up with the voice?
Speaker 5 (10:59):
Here?
Speaker 4 (11:00):
People are tweeting that at you, But Todd, you're always
sending emails at two in the morning.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
How did they know you're tweeting? It was just you know,
But what's with the voice?
Speaker 5 (11:09):
I know we all have a we all.
Speaker 11 (11:10):
Do like a voice of what we think a caller
sounds like, or someone on social media about the first
one to come up with this is my voice for
that thing?
Speaker 2 (11:17):
Okay, you know I was joking with you when I
wasn't sure.
Speaker 11 (11:21):
When you brought up fourteen different times over in over
a half hour period about that I have to leave
an hour early.
Speaker 5 (11:26):
After the eleventh one. I'm thinking, maybe he's.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
A little pissed. Wait, you have to leave an hour early.
Speaker 5 (11:30):
I have to leave at eleven. I sent h about
fifteen emails about that. It's in case there's no confusion
or there is.
Speaker 4 (11:35):
I mean, I gotta admit Todd sent sent about fifteen
emails of it.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
I didn't see it one time. I honestly, I had
no idea.
Speaker 6 (11:42):
That he was.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
I did.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
I did hear seat and go, wait, you're leaving an
hour I really had no idea.
Speaker 5 (11:49):
It was on the show today, what's happening?
Speaker 2 (11:51):
Paulie nearly died his eye nearly died. There you go, okay,
and he's here.
Speaker 5 (11:58):
That's true.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
I had ramatic invasive shoulder surgery, not a procedure, and
I'm here, thankfully.
Speaker 5 (12:05):
I danced between the rain drops. When it comes to
health things, my whole life.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Marvin right out of getting surgery on his mouth, comes
right back. I mean, that's what this show is really about.
Speaker 8 (12:18):
I went to the dentist the other day.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Yeah, how'd you do? It?
Speaker 8 (12:22):
Did pretty well?
Speaker 4 (12:23):
Yeah, they were a little rough with the fluss, a
little rougher than I would have liked.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
But this is toughening me. This is what everybody does,
ton you pitch in.
Speaker 5 (12:31):
It's a team, the whole team thing.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (12:35):
You guys knew that about me a lot of time.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
I do.
Speaker 5 (12:37):
It's all about me.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
But God is going to uh cram three hours of
content into two hours today.
Speaker 5 (12:45):
We're gonna try.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
Okay, it's great to have you. Great to have there
for two thirds of the show. Yeah, full line. You
know you get paid for two thirds of the show. Yeah.
Oh yeah, I'll have.
Speaker 5 (12:56):
To scratch a couple of nickels together and make rent.
But that's unfortunately.
Speaker 8 (12:59):
Wow ah wow, Todd. Wow.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
For somebody who professes to be funny, you don't have
a sense of humor.
Speaker 5 (13:08):
I don't, and I get sensitive about certain things.
Speaker 7 (13:11):
I know.
Speaker 11 (13:11):
I felt guilty from day one when I found out
that I got to go to this thing, or I
chose to go to this thing, and I was gonna
be I have to catch a flight at one o'clock
at an airport that's like over an hour from here,
and I'm like, oh, the first thing I thought of.
Instead of any kind of joy about going, it's like, oh,
I gotta tell Dan and I gotta leave early, and
that's that's going to be a wonderful conversation to have,
which is unfortunate.
Speaker 5 (13:30):
That I have to like the field laugh.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
But you feel that I do, yeah, And.
Speaker 11 (13:35):
I think you feel that because you've mentioned it many times.
But I didn't know when joking becomes serious.
Speaker 5 (13:39):
I don't know. I have to do better with reading
the room. I guess.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
No, it's not gonna happen after twenty twenty plus years,
it's not going to happen that gets done. But I
think you know, there are a lot of comedians or
guys who think they're comedians who don't have a good
sense of humor.
Speaker 5 (13:56):
That's true.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
Yeah, so just laugh. It's okay.
Speaker 5 (13:58):
I gotta lighten up a little bit.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
Todd. I nearly died on the operating table.
Speaker 5 (14:02):
You got a very big bruise that you showed us
a few times on your arm.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
Yes, yes, I mean it's amazing. We were gonna get
a cee an eye dog. Maybe a cane for him.
Speaker 6 (14:12):
Oh, that'd be nice.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
Yes, a nice wooden old cane, that'd be nice.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
Yes.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
The doctor did give me these and I thought they
were a decent prop These are the kind of those
blue blocker glasses they give to older folks, Like, are
those terminator going a little terminator like terminator at the mall?
Speaker 2 (14:28):
But you're not gonna wear them like you just had
your cataracts done exactly.
Speaker 6 (14:31):
These are cataracts. These are the cataracts of glasses.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
Not the Cadillac right cataract. Are you gonna wear them?
Speaker 10 (14:38):
Like?
Speaker 2 (14:39):
I'm looking for content? You gotta be honest to you.
You told me that.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
See he's not kidding when we talked the other day,
but no one here is kidding.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
Yeah, we've all been.
Speaker 6 (14:47):
Dan checked on me.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
He had nice thoughts and prayers, and then he goes,
what are we doing Friday?
Speaker 6 (14:52):
For content? What are we going to patch? Are we doing?
Can we get something better?
Speaker 2 (14:55):
I did say, are we having patch Friday? Right right?
And goes yeah, like I said, yes, it's patch, And
he goes, well, I got terminator sunglasses and he said, hey,
I switched. I love it.
Speaker 4 (15:06):
There was the the pump fake was tough the like
because we all thought that it was Paul's good eye, yes,
and that I was crushed for him.
Speaker 8 (15:14):
I was like, oh my gosh, this is just af.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
Well that would have been not no joking around. If
it was the good eye, it would have been.
Speaker 4 (15:21):
What makes it so weird, though, is that we're all like,
oh my gosh, like I hope he's okay, you know,
like legit concerned, and then all of a sudden there's like,
oh no, it turns out it was a blind eye.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
I We're like, oh, that's fine. So what's the problem.
Speaker 8 (15:34):
It is right, you're blinds are blind?
Speaker 2 (15:37):
Who cares?
Speaker 6 (15:38):
It is a lot less bad than it's bad.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
Is your blind eyes more blind than? What are we
feeling bad for? Get back to work? Hell cares? Goes
h he can't zoom. Oh I'm sorry, So I guess
what that means? You can't type if you have a
blind eye.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
Sorry, Unfortunately the doctor said eyes closed two days.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
What your mouth is closed to?
Speaker 10 (15:59):
Or?
Speaker 2 (16:00):
Do you see what's happening? We're picking on Paulie, but
he didn't helashed back. He didn't, you.
Speaker 3 (16:06):
Know, And they'll be picking on me in the third
hour as well.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
Social media is killing me right now.
Speaker 8 (16:16):
They said you send emails at two in the morning,
that's dedication.
Speaker 5 (16:19):
Okay, I'm gonna be on my boat and Coasta Rica
at Oliberty.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
How about we take a break?
Speaker 6 (16:24):
What, Paul, do you like the glass?
Speaker 2 (16:26):
I think it's a Tom Cruise, risky business with a
little bit of Schwarzenegger, a mall walking, you know, terminator stuff.
Speaker 5 (16:34):
Yes, Mark, kind of a fear and loathing in Las Vegas.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Look, okay, Jonathan Depp? Okay, Jonathan for no one. I
want to go by John Jonathan. You know I want
to change the vibe around me.
Speaker 7 (16:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (16:48):
I don't want to be Johnny Depp. I'm Jonathan Depp,
sends out a press release moment on how about we
take a break here? We accomplished an awful lot here.
Nobody else applauded with you. Mark, you can barely hear
my hands. Yeah, it's like golf applause. Yeah, I can't
really hear when you applaud. Everybody's taking bullets here, Todd,
(17:12):
everybody's having fun. Are Yeah?
Speaker 5 (17:15):
Evenly distributed on a daily.
Speaker 11 (17:16):
Basis twenty five times for how about we take a
break here?
Speaker 1 (17:22):

Speaker 2 (17:35):
Oh look, who's back with us? He's the lame duck.
He would be like the Mike McCarthy of NBA analyst
Here in the final year, Charles Barkley joining us on
the program. You feel like a lame duck? Yes, hey, Dan, Yeah?
Speaker 7 (17:51):
If I Kenny Smith, do I get a Mercedes?
Speaker 2 (17:57):
No?
Speaker 7 (17:58):
No, you don't.
Speaker 5 (17:59):
Ok?
Speaker 7 (18:00):
Yeah, yeah, we feel like a lame duck.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
I mean wait, wait, what what kind of cars do
you have? Do you have anything that would be like exotic?
Speaker 7 (18:08):
No, dude, I got money for a reason. I'm not stupid. Dude,
you can't. You can't have money if you waste money
on stupid stuff. I got a I got a Kia.
My main car is a Kia, and I got Afford Expedition.
Uh so that's it.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
Well, doesn't Shaq have a bunch of fancy cars?
Speaker 7 (18:31):
I got like five hundred million dollars?
Speaker 2 (18:35):
Well, if you would stop gambling, you might have that
money that Shack has.
Speaker 7 (18:41):
There's no chance of that happened, dude. I like to gamble.
What's wrong with it? You know what? You know what's
really about? You know the gambling thing? You know. My
mom was a maid and my grandmother worked in a
butcher factory, and we grew up on welfare in the project.
Nobody cared about my money. Nobody ever said, hey, let's
(19:04):
go take care of that Barkley family. Let's put some
let's do a gofund me for them. Now that I
got money and I like to gamble, everybody's like, man,
he gambles too much. Let me just say to this
so people don't get the wrong idea. Dan, if you
don't kiss my ass, I'm on gamble. I like to
(19:25):
do it. I'm in I'm in forum right now to
dad because my whole weekend is all about gambling on
Saturday and Sunday, the whole weekend.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
Brother, Okay, I'm happy that you're happy gambling. I would
like for you to win a little more.
Speaker 7 (19:41):
So. Yeah, I would like the teams to play. That's
what the damn problem is. It's not my bed selection,
it's them. You know, it's them. It is them.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
Okay, I'm gonna start with a serious topic here. What
is worse for the NBA A your problem load management
or too many three pointers?
Speaker 7 (20:05):
Dan? That's a great question, because I think they're both problems.
It's just now as a three point shooting contest. But
what's gonna be the biggest problem going forward When we
have guys making eighty to ninety one hundred million dollars
not playing back to back games, that's to me. I mean, listen, uh,
the three point thing bothers me because of course, if
(20:28):
they're going in, you're gonna win, but you gotta have
a plan. B. But when that new TV deal kicks
in next year and you got a guy making eighty
five million dollars and he says, hey, you know what,
I'm not gonna pay back to back games, it's ridiculous
that they fans are gonna pay as much as the
cost to go to games now and now you're gonna
(20:51):
have to go out and do start doing streaming going forward.
We can't have a guy making ninety five million dollars
saying I can't play basketball four days a week and
askalon fairness, most teams play three games a week, but
let's say hypothetically you play four games. You can't ask
fans to pay that money for a guy making ninety
(21:11):
five million dollars won't play back to back game. I mean,
if anybody think that's a good idea, they're crazy.
Speaker 2 (21:18):
Okay, But how do you fix load management?
Speaker 7 (21:21):
You play basketball man, we're the luckiest dudes in the world.
See this is am to balls me about the entire
seventy six or thing like number one they got you.
You don't tell people and not gonna play back to
back game. That's just where the stupidity started. But also
then if you're tired or a little sore, which every
basketball player is during the season, Hey, you know what, coach,
(21:44):
I'm gonna play twenty five minutes tonight. I'm not gonna
play forty two. That to me is my biggest problem
with load management. Just play twenty five to twenty seven minutes.
Like when you're a star, you're gonna play basically between
thirty five and forty five minutes most nights. But if
you go, if you gonna play back to back or
(22:05):
you want a load managers, just tell the coach, Hey, coach,
I'm gonna give you twenty five tonight. Maybe we could
push it twenty seven thirty. But because you know Adam
seiber who's amazing, he killed most of the back to
backs anyway. Yeah, so, but I think the load management,
you can't ask people out here, go out here and
(22:28):
get their hard earned money on like real jobs. They
say I'm coming to see this great player play and he's,
like I said, he's making eighty to one hundred million dollars. Well,
he sit it out because he was tired. What it's
not sustainable.
Speaker 2 (22:43):
What if you just got paid for the number of
games you played, dude.
Speaker 7 (22:48):
Them dudes would be playing eighty five games. Dudey Hey, dude, Dan,
we're not We don't have like a real job. We're
playing basketball.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
But do I have to incentivize these guys making this
much money that if you play this many games you
get like there's a bonus and you have to do
something here? I mean, I think we got a real
problem with too many threes. The game is not great.
And I just think, you know, when you've got guys
who they think nothing of sitting down, of sitting out.
Speaker 7 (23:25):
Yeah, Dan, you know when you say that or I
say that, they got we're the old get all my
long guys. And I don't care if they say that,
because man, we're playing basketball. We're not a nurse. I'm
pretty sure nurses don't want to go in sometime. Guys
who work in the steel meals, who work in construction,
I'm pretty sure they don't want to go in But
(23:48):
you know, man, I've always told people the most important
things should be the game, and it's really getting to
the point where's embarrassing that we actually have having this
conversation because if you go back and look at basketball,
the greatest player is ever number one. They had to
go to college for three and four years, but they
(24:09):
played the whole games. They played in crappy shoes, they
flew commercial you know, injuries. Now that you're back in
six months or a year and it's your career, we
got the best medical stuff. We got guys sleeping in
hyperbarrack chambers. We got guys doing cold water plunges. This
(24:31):
is from a physical standpoint, this is probably the greatest
time to play sports. Can you imagine as a football player,
And I'm gonna be serious for a second here, this
is probably the greatest time to ever play football because
number one, the money you make, but also if you
get a sniff of a concussion, you're gonna you're not
(24:53):
gonna play, you know, you know, you go back and
look at our day. You got there putting that smelling
stuff under your nose, like, get back out there, get
back out there now. If you've got a concussion, You're
probably not gonna play, and that's great, But like, if
this is the best time ever to play sports number
one financially, but from a half standpoint and a medical standpoint,
(25:17):
this is the greatest time ever.
Speaker 2 (25:19):
Well, the NBA is nowhere as physical as it was
back when you played, so you can factor that in
of you don't have back to back games. It's not
as physical. These guys should be in better shape. There's
the money that's attached to this, Like, there's no real
Lebron shouldn't be the guy who says I want to
play every game this season. But he is saying that
(25:41):
he wants to play.
Speaker 7 (25:42):
But Lebron's he's amazing. But then you just laid it
out right there. You said these guys should want to
play basketball for the financial and all this stuff. That's
that's the part that hurts me as as an older player.
I'm like, man, the most money I ever made, and
I'm blessed. I'm blessed for five million dollars. Let me
(26:05):
tell you something. For seventy five eighty million dollars a year.
I get to the game early, I'm like, hey, like, hey,
I was you know, you know, I was we were
talking about Zion last year getting in shape. I said, yo, man,
for seventy to eighty million dollars, you know what they'd
be saying. I'm worried about that. Charles Barkley, he's out
here anemic. You know he got of eating at this order.
(26:28):
He's too skinny. I mean because, and I mean necessarily.
I got in shape for two million dollars. My first
contract was four years, two million dollars. I lost fifty
pounds because I was fat in college. Then I would
be totally anorexic for seventy five eighty million dollars. And
I know that's a serious subject. But for the kind
(26:50):
of money these guys are making today, God bless him,
God bless him. I'm not a hater, dude, But to
go play basketball home for the money we're making today,
then you own worst case scenario. Think about this worst
case scenario. You would never play more than four games
in a week. Think about that. We don't fly commercial anymore.
(27:17):
Like I said, you got the best shoes, you got
the best medical stuff. It's an embarrassment that we have
to beg these players. It's embarrassing as an older player
that we have to beg these guys to play basketball.
I mean necescerely.
Speaker 2 (27:31):
Charles Barklay Turner Sports Inside the NBA analyst. Do you
have a statue?
Speaker 7 (27:37):
Yes, I got one at Auburn. I got one at
the Philadelphia seventy six ers facility. They put miniatures up,
but yeah, I got one with at Auburn. It's really
an honor. You know what's really funny. When I met
(27:58):
with those people the first time, it was a really
awful looking statue before they fit to fit got the
finished product. I s, man, what are you doing? And
he says, well, I got like four or five pictures
of you and I'm trying to merge them together. I was, yo, man,
stop it, pick one picture and we're good. There's an
honor for the statue. But yeah, man, that Dwayne Wade.
(28:22):
That's awful.
Speaker 10 (28:22):
Man.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
I felt bad for Dwayne because he had to act
like he liked it.
Speaker 7 (28:27):
He did have to act like he liked it. But
I think I saw on some show they were talking
about the looks on his kids face looking at him.
But they were like, but but were you between a
rock and a hard place. But he can't do anything.
Speaker 2 (28:45):
I don't know where you guys, stand, I didn't see
you guys talking about the Brownny Lebron stuff. Like people
got sideways on the coverage of this and it's the
worst thing for the NBA and uh, you know, nepotism
and whatever it is. And I'll give you my take,
and whether you agree with it or not, we can discuss.
(29:07):
But I said, if it keeps Lebron engaged, if he
wants to continue to play, he wants to play at
a high level. He wants to play with his son,
who's going to be the twelfth man at best on
the bench, or probably go to the G League. You
go to Cleveland, you get to go back to his hometown,
You bring your son with you, great memories there, he
gets a hoop. Now he goes down to the G League.
(29:29):
He's the fifty fifth pick in the draft. Nobody ever
talks about the fifty fifth pick in the draft. So
with that being said, where do you stand with Bronnie
and Lebron.
Speaker 7 (29:40):
Yeah, you know, you got a lot of great points.
I think the main thing is is him getting to
play with his son is a cool thing for one thing,
But I think he needs to go to the G
League so he can get better as a basketball player.
He's not gonna get better sitting on the bench. It's
a great story to start the season having RIFFI Jr.
(30:00):
And Senior there going back to Cleveland get his first
NBA basket, But you know he's not gonna get better
as a player sitting on the bench.
Speaker 10 (30:10):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (30:10):
He needs to play basketball because you think about it,
damn you get you got the factory and numb one.
I'm glad he's healthy, but he hasn't played any basketball
really in a year or more. I mean, he hasn't
played any basketball. He was, you know, because of the
hard thing. And I like I say, I'm so glad
he's healthy, but like he needs to play basketball because
(30:32):
he's got to figure out because he doesn't have a position.
He's a tweener. But he's gonna have to learn. Like
I said, the only way you get better at playing
any sport that is playing that sport. I mean, so,
I think it's a great story. It's great fell Lebron,
but he needs to go to the G League and
get learn how to play get better as a basketball player.
Speaker 2 (30:54):
One of my pet peeves is the Defensive Player of
the Year award because to me, Victor winben Yama affected
more shots than anybody did last year. He can guard
the perimeter, he can guard inside at the same time.
And I know I'm not big on Rudy Gobert, but
the award bothers me because I don't know, like, it
(31:17):
feels like Michael Jordan could have been Defensive Player of
the Year every year if he wanted to be, like
he would lock somebody down, right.
Speaker 7 (31:25):
Yeah, well, let's since you're talking about pet Peas, I
got one. Okay, okay, these idiots on ESPN every year,
why do you keep watching?
Speaker 2 (31:34):
I keep telling you, if you.
Speaker 7 (31:36):
Don't watch, I got to see what happened.
Speaker 2 (31:42):
Well, Skip Bayles isn't around anymore, so you don't have
to worry about him.
Speaker 7 (31:46):
Yeah. I kind of feel bad for the guy.
Speaker 10 (31:49):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (31:50):
I didn't like the guy, but I feel bad. I
feel bad because I do. I don't want bad things
to have in other people. But you know, it's funny
you said it because I'm I'm watching all these idiots
and foods in Jackass on ESPN and it bothers me
every year because they used this analogy because it gets
back to the NBA. They're like, well, Lebron was the
(32:10):
best player, Yes he was, but Dereck Rose was better
that year. Well, Karl Malone won MVB. He was better
than Michael Jordan that year. They have these arguments every
year about the MVP, and now they got a really
cool one coming up in the NFL, which has always
been my argument. Pat Mahomes is the best quarterback in
(32:32):
the world. But if you don't think Jered Golf, Lamar Jackson,
Derek Henry, or the MVP, Josh Allen, Josh Allen. If
you don't think one of those, I love Josh Allen.
He's probably one of my favorite players. If you don't
think one of those four players at the MVP, you
(32:54):
don't know anything about sports. I get so annoyed when
these guys like, well, Lebron should have won it, Like, no, don't.
It goes to the guy having the best season. It's
not the guy who's the best player. We all know
Patrick is the man, but Josh Lamar, Derrick Henry, Jared Golf,
(33:15):
those four guys. And let me tell you something, I'm
glad I don't have a vote because you talk about
putting names in a hat and just pulling one, because
any one of those four guys. Like I say, but
it annoys me when these foods on each other networks
talking about, well, this guy, he's the best player. It's
not who's the best player, it's the guy who's having
(33:37):
the best season. And those four guys are having a
better season than Patrick. And he's the best quarterback. He
might go down as the best ever, but for this year,
those five four guys. And let me tell you something,
I don't know who I would pick between Derrick Henry
and Lamar either that's a tough one. But Jared golf Man,
(33:57):
it's I don't understand why that guy gets no respect.
He gives zero respect. He led a team to the
super Bowl. They're like, you're not good enough. And that
team brings in Stafford and they win the Super Bowl
and they just prap on him even more. He just
keeps his head down in Detroit. Get him to the
NFC Championship game. They should have won that game. Now
(34:20):
he's got him with the probably the best team. I
hate that agents at Hutcheson kid. That hutch was one
of my favorite player. Shout out to Aden Hutchinson man,
that kid man, his motor, it was ridiculous. I hate
he broke his leg. But man, Jared Golf, nobody ever
get that kid any credit. I'm proud of him for
handling it.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
Do you think that you had a better year than
Jordan when you won the MVP?
Speaker 7 (34:42):
Yes? Hell, yes, the best record. We had the best
record in the NBA that year. Yes. And was he
a better player than me? Yes he was. But that
year the Phoenix Suns had the best record in the
NBA and the no and so like I say, listen,
(35:03):
Derrick Rose, shout out to Dereck Rose, great career man,
great dude. But the year he won MVP, the Chicago
Bulls what they I mean, they had the home court
against the Capitalists, and people forget but it's the guy
having the best season is not the best player. And
them clowns and foods on other network. When I set
foods and clowns, I mean is being in Fox. They're like, well,
(35:24):
to go to the best player. I'm like, well, okay,
that's that's your opinion. That don't make you.
Speaker 2 (35:29):
Right, I can. I can tell you this now. I
didn't vote for you for MVP that year.
Speaker 7 (35:38):
Did you vote me second?
Speaker 2 (35:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (35:40):
I can live with that. See that. You know I
should have won the MVP in eighty eight, Magic Johnson,
we had the closest vote in the history of the NBA.
So I had a great year in Philly. I think
that's one of the years. I was like twenty eight
points and I led to NB and rebounding, and I
knew I had a great year, and I knew it
was going to come down to the But what really
(36:01):
bothered me, and that's why we should have some of
these fools accountable, because I got I think I beat
him in first place votes and then I didn't get
any other votes, and I was like, well, wait a minute,
how can I get I mean, you got to put
me first or second, worst case scenario third, and at
(36:25):
the time it was the closest vote in NBA history,
and I was so mad. I says, hey, I don't
mind losing the word, but y'all just like, like I say,
I'm a least suckered worst case scenario third, and I
was really pissed.
Speaker 2 (36:43):
Sounds like you still really pissed, Dan.
Speaker 7 (36:47):
Our job on television is to be fair and honest.
One reason I had fans might disagree with me, But
no fan has ever said to me, hey, you know
what you took personal shit, I said, a guy, or
you have a person of endebted against a guy. No player,
every player who calls me when I criticize him, I said, Yo,
(37:09):
let me explain why I said that, because players and
agents call me all the time, and I'll be honest
with him. But you know what I hate about the
players and the agents, Dan, They never called me when
I said something good about that player. It pisses me off.
It really pisses me off.
Speaker 2 (37:26):
It's great to talk to you. I'm glad you're in
mid season for him, and hey.
Speaker 7 (37:30):
Can I put you?
Speaker 11 (37:30):
Hey?
Speaker 7 (37:31):
When I'm looking for another job, can I put you
on my LinkedIn? I think yes? As a rest of reference.
Speaker 2 (37:36):
Yes, okay, yes, I'm.
Speaker 7 (37:40):
Trying to get my famous friends to all in case
after using them as a LinkedIn reference.
Speaker 2 (37:45):
So you haven't heard from them, so that's why you're
asking me. All right, I'm gonna be there for you.
I'll help you with your resume. He's the great Charles Barkley.
Thank you, Charles.
Speaker 1 (37:55):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show week days at nine am during six am
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
Colberd Breer. The Monday morning quarterback too little, too late
for the Jets.
Speaker 10 (38:13):
Well, I mean, I think their schedule is manageable from
here on out, Dan, I think it does set up
sort of a pivotal one, you know, next week in Arizona.
You know, we've heard a lot about how challenging their
schedule is. And two Thursday night games, two Monday night games,
the travel, you know, having a West coast trip to
(38:34):
then going to Tennessee, then playing Thursday night on the
front end of the schedule, going to London.
Speaker 2 (38:39):
It's been a lot on them.
Speaker 7 (38:40):
And now they get ten.
Speaker 10 (38:41):
Days of runway into another West coast trip, and yeah,
I mean, I think if you can get this one,
you know, then now all of a sudden you're within
a game of getting to five and six and then
you get your buy and a chance to reset. You know,
to me, the most encouraging thing about last night is,
you know, like they it was a tenuous week in
(39:03):
that building. It was an uncomfortable week in that building.
A lot of people felt like they were walking around
on eggshells. A lot of like same old Jets vibes
in that building. And you know, over the course of
the first half, it sort of looked like all that manifested,
and somehow they were able to put their foot in
the ground at halftime and just go and in a
(39:23):
lot of ways become the team we thought they were
going to be coming into the year. Right, So it's
it's Aaron Rodgers making throws down the field to to
to Garrett Wilson and DeVante Adams. It's Brace Hall running
the ball effectively, and it's the defensive line dominating, you know,
sacking CJ.
Speaker 7 (39:40):
Stroud eight times.
Speaker 10 (39:42):
So, you know, I don't know if that thirty minutes
of football as an indicator of anything going forward, because
the last time they played on Thursday night they looked
great also, you know, and then they wind up losing
five in a row coming out of that. But I
wouldn't declare them dead yet, you know. I also think
the AFC is probably nice as we once thoughts. So
maybe nine and eight gets you in the playoffs this year.
Speaker 2 (40:03):
Give me the team if they lose this weekend will
be sellers next week. Any any trade deadline deals hinging
on what happens this weekend?
Speaker 10 (40:12):
In your opinion, yeah, I think that the two that
kind of stand out in my mind at least, well,
one really stands out in my mind. I think one
would be a seller, another one might be more of
a listener. The seller would be Cleveland, the listener would
be the Rams. You know, I think the Browns are
(40:33):
right now in a spot where it's like, okay, we're
three and six. You know, a lot of where we
thought we were going is out the window. But if
Jamis plays really well again and they get to four wins, now,
I mean, you can at least compete and again, like
you know, if the point of entry for the playoffs
in the AFC has nine wins, hey, you know, if
they can play like they did around Joe Flacco last
(40:54):
year around Jamis Winston, maybe that's attainable for them. Whereas
if they're three and seven, now you're talking about something else,
and I don't think they're gonna trade Miles Garrett, but
those calls will certainly come. And you know, I think
as far as like guys who are more realistic targets,
I certainly think Zadarius Smith and and Greg Newsom would
(41:15):
be there for the taking.
Speaker 5 (41:16):
As for.
Speaker 10 (41:18):
As for the Rams, you know, they were in a
weird spot going into going into their win last week
against Minnesota where calls had come on, calls had come
on Cooper Cup, and so they were, you know, intently
listening on, you know, on on on offers for Cooper Cup.
But they told other teams, is it will cost you
more to get Cooper Cup out of la than it
(41:41):
cost the Jets to get DeVante Adams out of Vegas.
That was a third round or that could become a second.
So I don't know if anybody's want to pay that
price for Cooper Cup, but I think you know whether
or not the Rams would accept such a deal, especially
after Pook and to Phuah got got got banged up
in practice this week again, might hinge on on on
how the game against Seattle goes on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (42:03):
What should the Lions do?
Speaker 10 (42:05):
The lines should make calls on pass rushers. The Lions
should call you know, the Raiders about Max Crosby and
the Browns about about the Brown's about uh Miles Garrett.
But they should also make calls in the second level
of the pass rusher market, you know, because I don't
think Crosby and Garrett are ultimately gonna move. Doesn't hurt
to ask, So, you know, again, like a Zadarius Smith
(42:28):
in Cleveland, the Jadebian Clowney with the Panthers. You know,
I think they just need to get another pass rusher
in there. The cool thing about it is, I think
Aiden Hutchinson coming back for the Super Bowl is realistic.
You know, you'd never consider a circumstance like him his
good luck. That was a nasty broken leg the way
(42:48):
that it looked, but the reality of the situation is
he got a lot of He got pretty fortunate in
a lot of different ways.
Speaker 6 (42:54):
No ligament damage, no.
Speaker 10 (42:55):
Artery damage, no nerve damage. It just so happened that,
you know, where the injury happened was ten minutes away
from one of the you know, from a Level one
trauma center, one of the best hospitals you know in
the country, and one of the best surgeons that did
doing this particular procedure was there, and that's doctor Allan Jones,
(43:16):
and Aidan was in surgery less than three hours after
he went down. So it's just about every way after
the injury, Hutchinson has really kind of been in a
good place.
Speaker 7 (43:27):
So the idea that he could play for the Super
Bowl is very real.
Speaker 10 (43:30):
So if you can bring in a pass rusher that
can just add something, you know, like a Zadaria Smith,
like a you know, like a like a Gdvian Clowney,
you know, and then find a way to get through
the NFC bracket. And now you're bringing Aiden Hutchinson back
for the Super Bowl. That could be a pretty cool
thing to watch. And I love where they're at as
a team. You know, I thought that I think the
most interesting stat of the entire year might be that
(43:52):
at one point in that game against the Titans, And
I know it's the Titans dam but at one point
that game they had nine passing yards and nine net
passing yards and forty two points. Like I think it
just sort of speaks to how complete the team is
like to be able to do that, like through special teams.
Their defense they're playing field position is just incredible. And
(44:12):
that's with a quarterback you know who I think is
playing at an MVP.
Speaker 2 (44:15):
Level, Albert Breer, the Monday Morning Quarterback MMQB dot com.
If or when the Dolphins get eliminated, do you continue
to play Tua?
Speaker 7 (44:28):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (44:28):
I mean I think you have to listen to the
doctors and listen to Tua himself. And you know, I'm
always uneasy, you know, dan about about football people making
medical decisions. You know, so there is that thing in
the back of your head that each of these guys
only has so many hits right like that they can
take and there's a clock on everybody's body.
Speaker 7 (44:49):
And I think that's true.
Speaker 10 (44:52):
But you know, I also think, like you know, you
have to try to get the best effort out of
everybody in the locker room. And if you're shutting down
one guy, you're shutting down the quarterback to the detriment
of other people in the locker room.
Speaker 7 (45:04):
That's a really tough place to be.
Speaker 5 (45:06):
And I also think too too is going to want
to play.
Speaker 10 (45:09):
I think, you know, that definant press conference he had
before they played the Cardinals last week, I think sort
of illustrates that. And and you know, like it's his decision, Yeah,
I think, And I think everybody's heart's in the right
place in this, But I think we're all sort of
playing mom and dad to some degree with it. You know,
the reality is he's an adult. He has a lot
more information today than a player like him would have
(45:32):
had in the nineties on the consequences of going out
there and playing.
Speaker 7 (45:35):
He's choosing to go out there.
Speaker 10 (45:37):
You know, and you know, do I have a level
of concern for.
Speaker 7 (45:40):
A player doing that?
Speaker 10 (45:41):
Yeah, of course I do. You know, I'm human like
everybody else, like I. I you know, I you know,
I don't want to see, you know, the worst case
scenario play out here. But ultimately is his body and
his decision, and you know, you just hope that he's
doing what's best not only for him but for his
family too.
Speaker 2 (45:58):
I think we've discussed this. If I was the Bears,
I wouldn't have brought back Matt Eberflus make him a
lame duck coach, and you have a rookie quarterback. I
would have either said let's extend him, let's get some
continuity there, or I wouldn't have brought him back. You
have this devastating loss that they just suffered, and I mean,
(46:20):
I don't know if the seat gets hotter. I think
you brought up Ben Johnson, the Lions offensive coordinator. He's
going to be the object of desire probably in Dallas,
in Jacksonville, if Chicago opens up kind of handicap that
those situations there and the role that Ben Johnson is
probably going to play in this.
Speaker 10 (46:41):
Yeah, well, Let's start with what I actually said, because
I think, as you know, the Internet can take something
and run wild with it. And sometimes a lie travels
around the world faster than the truth puts on its pants.
Speaker 7 (46:53):
Right, So I like, I like what I said.
Speaker 10 (46:57):
And I was asked by I'm on the show and
Chicago on a Cap and Jay Huad every week, and
so we were discussing, you know, different things and how
the availability of one coach can affect another, and I
said in passing, well, you know I had heard that
the job that Ben Johnson really had his eye on
last year with Chicago. Now, ultimately the Chicago job didn't
(47:18):
come open because Matt Ebraflus did a great job down
the stretch of that year at that season, So you know,
we were I mean, that was purely a hypothetical, you know,
in December and January, far from it actually manifesting. Now,
you know, the question is like where do the Bears
stand with Matt Eberflus. I mean, he's done a great
(47:39):
job on balance and he's built a really complete team.
And I go back to that opener, you know, like
where they were able to win with Caleb.
Speaker 7 (47:46):
Williams not playing very well.
Speaker 10 (47:47):
You know, in that first game and they they took
a block punt back for a touchdown, and they had
to pick six in that game, and they were able
to win in every which way. And I think he's
built a team as capable of winning a lot of
different ways. So I have trouble just killing a guy
for a really bad moment and look like he's accountable
for that moment, no question, But I have I have
(48:08):
trouble just throwing the baby out with the bathwater on
this one. You know, I think he's done a good
enough job to to certainly create a good environment for
Caleb Williams to grow in and you know, a good
enough job to like, yeah, I have everybody hit the
pause button on this and let's see how the season
plays out. Obviously, the team is it a very important
(48:31):
juncture in deciding what's what's best for you know, what
looks like a full fledged franchise quarterback and those big
decisions you know are coming as far as whether you
extend ebraflush to go in another direction. But I think
Ebraflus deserves the rest of the year based.
Speaker 2 (48:46):
On the job that he's already done. There great to
talk to. You's always have good weekend. Thank you evert
all right, Thanks DP
