What's the best saddle for a beginner?

Beginner? Beginner saddle?

And I think they're all like they all take some
time to get to know and get used to and
to learn from learn how they work. I don't think
that there's necessarily and I may be wrong, Casey, but
I don't think there's necessarily like a beginner saddle. I
think it's just like saddle hunting for a beginning is
just something you gotta kind of learn. It's like, you know,
there's there's guitar lessons for beginners, but the guitar is

not for beginners to.

Be at, you know what I mean?

So you have to start somewhere and I think it's
just pretty much just jumping into a saddle. I will
say the one I use is pretty comfortable.

If I want to give you a non industry answer,
you can kind of go two different directions with this.
If you're the kind of guy who's committed to saddle
hunting and you want to be like you're like, I'm
gonna start saddle hunting, it's the thing I'm gonna do,
then maybe you should think about the details of the
saddle you're gonna use. I used a couple of them,
like Cruiser, like tether To, like timber Ninja.

That's the ones I've used the most.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
They all are nice, but you know, do your research,
find the one that you really think that you would
go with and purchase that. Now, if you're a kind
of guy who wants to try it out, because it's
kind of what that sounds like with that question, I
would find the closest, cheapest saddle that you can buy
used and try it out and just do that. And
I wouldn't probably do the borrow buddy thing borrow a

buddies because he's gonna want it back, but find you an.

Expensive one to try out hunt out of it.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
A couple of times and see if saddle huntings for
you or not, and then you can make some decisions
about if you like this or don't like that, or
whatever it may be, and then you can always sell
that used one again if that's not the one that
you wanted.

And the market for resale is pretty good. I'd say
I use the tethered for a year and never had
any issues. I know a lot of guys suffered from
hip pinch stuff with the phantom, I think is what
I used.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
I loved that saddle. I thought it was great.

Speaker 5 (03:40):
I like walking in in that saddle, but I've been
using a cruiser for the last couple of years. It's
more comfortable in my opinion. The what's what's the cruiser
called that? I use single painter XC and so it's
more comfortable. But I don't like walking in as much
with the saddle on in the cruiser as a the tether.

So those are my two cents? What else you got? Sorry?

I will say I've used the saddle that you didn't
talk about. I have used as the timber Ninja. I
don't remember what it's called either, but it's a single
panel it's not quite as comfortable as the Cruiser, but
it has some unique features that are like kind of
toppy in type stuff. So if you're looking for something
that's it's like that might be something to check out.

Yeah, yeah, we do work closely with Mediator, so you'll

Best budget minded's set up to hunt from a tree
in East Texas?

Are you going to be mobile?

Speaker 5 (04:44):
I mean, yeah, that's I guess that's the I guess
if you can clarify that, that would help us. But
let's answer the tree stand is even I mean, even
if you're semi mobile, can be probably the best budget
minded thing to from the sound like, are just gonna
cost more than a tree stand in most situations.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
I think that climbing is where, honestly it gets a
little bit more difficult because it's going to be pretty expensive.
If you want to be mobile with climbing gear, or
you can use screw ins on private and they're not
very expensive at all. That's probably the best way to
be mobile with on a on the cheap.

Okay, if you have a specific bow stand on your place.
Would you replace a hang on stand to saddle hunt
or just leave your hang on stand.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
I'm gonna leave the hang on stand for it.

It's it's it's just real nice to just have that
thing out there and be able to hop up in it.

And you know, quite honestly, it's more comfortable.

I mean, a good saddle isn't very uncomfortable, but the
hang on's nice.

I've got two hang ons back here on my property,
and one hundred once out of them this year because
there's no deer. But uh, I just I've left him
there for years and I killed ranch buck with a
saddle on, but out of a hang on.

High protein?

This is I'm not a biologist, but from the small
amounts of research that I've done, because I don't own
enough property to really do this or even have some
sort of management abilities on any property that could do
this really too much. But you want to feed high
protein pretty much year round, I think you want to

create his little stress is possible for the doe herd,
especially if from what I understand that the healthier the
dose are in a long term situation, the greater antler
growth and overall body weight you'll get on the buck

deer throughout the years. So it's like the research I've
seen is like the first generation doesn't necessarily benefit from
like good feed, but that the second generation no, Like
there's these these biological signals that are sent from the
dough that like, hey, things have been good out here

for years, and you can sustain a bigger body weight
little buck baby when you come out. So because things
are so good and we're fed so well, and our
stressed is solo that you know, that's the best if
you're talking about the best way. I think that from
the research I've seen, it's that it's like creating generational

good conditions for especially to those I don't really.

Can do a whole lot about it as far as
antly size. But Tyler's points all would be things you
could try and they might work, but it's just there's
so many outside circumstances and things. You know, maybe if
you had a ton of acreage you can make a difference,
and I know that people in South Texas do it.
But you know, if you were trying to make an impact,

you know, good high protein food and water would be
I would like do my best to make a buck
not have to travel very far in his life.

I think that would make the biggest difference, honestly. Yeah,
because age is gonna trump just about everything. I mean,
even some deer are just destined to be a one
thirty their whole life, you know, and that's but they're
not going to be a one thirty if they're destined
to be that at four years old. Probably even I mean, like,
if it's destined to be at one thirty its whole life,
then it's probably five, six, seven years old before it

I've seen a few of these roll through that are
asking about specific places, and I'm going to tell y'all
that's a no, no, We're not going to.

show up and we get to shake your hand and
talk about it some. But yeah, like if I mean,
if I say we're hunting in Texas, everybody on the
forums will say that we're ruining Texas hunting. So you know,
I don't know what to do about it other than

just to create generic content that people.

Now, y'all, everything is just say don't if anybody and
you can ask that some of those questions in a
generic way. Like, for instance, if someone said any plans
to hunt some of that big wood stuff in the
eastern part of the state, we can go with that,
you know, and they answer to be.

No, I hate it. I'm glad that country's there, but
it's hard. I mean for squirrels.

Yeah, it's far enough away too that like day trips
are tough. So I mean, we've done some but you
just don't get to spend a lot of time out,
you know, when something's three hours from you or whatever.

Nick has a beginner bow and wants to buy a
new one. What would you recommend for his next bow
he wants to upgrade from beginner bow.

Speaker 3 (10:46):
Yeah, if you have shot a beginner bow, you probably
didn't put a lot of thought. And now I'm not
trying to be rude or anything. I'm just kind of
assuming some things. You probably didn't put.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
A lot of thought to the qualities of the bow
that you liked when you purchased it.

Speaker 3 (11:03):
If it was a beginner bow, you probably were looking
for something economical, I would think, or maybe you were
looking for something that was easy to shoot potentially, or
maybe your favorite influencer told you should buy that one.

Speaker 1 (11:14):
I don't know, but you're looking to step up.

Speaker 3 (11:19):
I would go shoot as many bows as you can
and shoot the one, and I would narrow it down
at least to the ones that you feel comfortable both
with the draw cycle. It's probably a big one and
Tyler can probably talk about that more. And then also
like the grip, and for me, I think how easy

the bullet bow is to control. So like personally, bows
that are a little longer axle to axel seem to
be a little easier for me to control, and I
think that would be the same for most people.

I'm five to eleven on a really good day, so
really it means five ten and.

So getting shorter and getting shorter and wider.

So I know that seems like a generic answer, but
just go to your your your pro shop if you're
local out east here in East Texas, go to camp
to our shop down there and tell them that you
want to shoot a bunch of bo's because you're interested
in purchasing a new, good one and uh, and you'll
have some thoughts. You probably want some real answers, so

I'll tell you. I love my Botch SR three fifty.
I like a lot of the new Matthews, and I
like the Prime Inline six maybe or something like that.
I've shot those and liked them pretty good.

Speaker 5 (12:40):
I've been I shot a Botech SS thirty four all season,
shot really well with it. It's a little bit slower
than when I shot the year before, but it's manageable.
It's a long ata bow and it seems to be
more accurate and me easier and more fun to draw

than what I shot last year, which is a little
more of a speed bow.

So it's a thought. It's something that.

Speaker 5 (13:08):
You could probably pick up and used for a decent
price too. So yeah, I mean I would agree with Casey.
You go and shoot the bows and see what you like.
And uh, generally speaking on a year to year difference,
if you buy last year's bow from X company, that
you like what the bow shoots this year, if it's
a similar bow ata and speck wise, then it probably

is gonna be something you like, you know, so you
can get it used cheaper from last last year's model.
They don't change a whole lot year to year usually.

Yeah, and nowadays there's just not a lot of bows
you're gonna shoot that you're gonna draw back and shoot
me like, yeah, that was Yeah, you know, there's just
a lot of nice suppose that they're they're all pretty nice.

Any spring sorry, any spring bow hog hunts coming up?

Speaker 1 (13:53):
There are?

There has already been some, There'll be more. We actually
just recorded a sweet hog video that we're coming out
on the YouTube channel pretty soon.

Yeah, there's uh, we've already both attempted some stalks. So
we're working on we're shronkers trying to shoot one for
you know, get a shot off at one. So the
wind is not our friend sometimes.

As Tyler decided on that once in a lifetime hunt yet, yes,
I have you, I would love to go on a
hunt for once in a while time.

In fact, I did a little shopping at the Dallas
Safari Club convention in Dallas this weekend, and.

So I found something out.

I'm gonna I'm gonna just say what the story is here,
but I think I told the guys this earlier, and
I didn't tell them that the kicker at the end,
so I saw I was looking, you know, like, I
love sheep. I haven't ever hunted, but I would love to.
I think they're the coolest. So I was looking through
the boost and it's one of those awkward moments where
this guy kind of like catches my eye and I

catch him and he's at his booth and then he's like,
it's like, hey, man, what's going on.

I'm like, hey, what's going on?

Speaker 5 (15:03):
And I see this fan in sheep, which is like
a Yukon Territory sheep that is like a supposedly a
crossbreed between a stone and a doll or whatever. So
because it's not recognized in Boone and Crockett as one
of the four Grand Slam sheep species, I was like, Oh,
that think's gonna be affordable, you know, or whatever, and

I can. I can pull out a loan tomorrow and
go and just do this thing in two years three years.
So I was like, oh, was that a fan of sheep.
He's like, yeah, he tells me this whole spiel on
how his place is the best and you know, hardest
to get into, and this and that and and kind
of gives me the whole you know, nobody cares where
harder speech and and then I was like, oh, cool, well,

can I grab one of those pribace sheets from you?
So I grab one. The first thing on there was
the fan of sheep. I was like, oh cool, fifty
five grand and I decided, Man, that's probably not the
hunt for me. But that's weird because I thought that'd
be the cheap one, right, which it is cheaper than
a stone sheep even, but here's the kickers. I was
talking to one of my buddies at the show about it,

who has done quite a bit of sheep hunting, and
he was like, you know, you can apply fanning to
your stone sheep, so they will accept fanning sheep entries
in the stone sheep category.

Speaker 1 (16:19):
So that's why it's still crazy expensive.

Speaker 5 (16:22):
It doesn't have the colors that like a stone sheep
would have, but it fits into that category so guys
can get their grand slam. So they're charging a lot
of money. So that's that's one way to say that. Yeah,
Claybeer just said that, So that's that's one way to
say that. That was, you know, a bust. And then

I looked. I started looking at prices or off the bat,
like mule deer. I was like, oh man, big mule deer.
Maybe cool, cool hunt for mule deer or something. Maybe
that's more affordable. And it was like, oh, there's one
for sixteen grand. And then I was just like, you
know what this fixing to turn into Europe is? What's
this fixing to happen?

Speaker 1 (17:00):
I can't.

Speaker 5 (17:00):
I mean, I really stopped looking. I started looking at
fishing pretty much. That's what I was doing there, was
looking at fishing stuff and just kind of sightseeing. It
was fun, but I just like, I don't know, it's
weird because like as fast as inflation is increasing, salaries
aren't keeping up. And then on top of that, the
hunt inflation for stuff like that is because it's a

one percent kind of hunt, it's inflating even faster than inflation,
so like there's no way that our salaries will ever
catch up. I don't think I'll ever go on a
sheep hunt. I don't know if I ever will. And
I thought, like ten years ago, I thought for sure
I could do this. I'll, you know, if I have
to pull out alone in a few years and just
pay it back over you know, three to five years
or whatever, and then I'll go do that one hunt,

you know, and just be happy with it.

And now.

You know, stone cheaper one hundred grand, And it's like,
I don't think I'm gonna I don't think I could.

I could really do that.

I mean, I would have to like sell a massive
piece of property or get some sort of crazy amount
of inheritance or something. I think before I could really
even think that that would be a possibility. But still
it's a lot of money, even with a big inheritance
or something, right, So it's just crazy. My buddy that

he was like they just keep paying it. And that's
the thing is like, well, twenty five or thirty grand
wasn't nothing for these guys four or five years ago,
and still nothing for him to spend one hundred because
they're ten millionaires, you know, or whatever. So it's like
it really doesn't matter to them a whole lot, and
I'm not in that category. All right, where's Hunter? How's

he doing? Which one the one you've been taking hunting?

I've been taking a young man name Hunter. We know
a medium age.

The evolutionist would call this covergent evolution, right, where a
lot of things come together and they all end up
in the same spot. Because that's probably something that you
said at some point in your life. I'm sure we
started saying toad around two thousand and nine when we
were bass fishing. I don't know who started saying it,

you know, Yeah, I don't know either, but it kind
of came from fishing. I think, like bass, we're called
big bass were called toads. And then clay Bird says
he heard what he'll say it okay good.

Like I don't know if there's a guy that can
that can influence the hunting hunting industry to say something,

a majestic thing, an act of majesty.

No, I don't have I'm not gonna go affordable on
any Western hunts next year. I don't think they focusing
on the deer's.

If I draw a good tag, then I'm going on
Western hunt. But there's I don't have any really plans
to pay for something right now to go on. I mean,
I don't know. Times is tough, y'all. It's right last week.

We need somebody to come in and fix this economy.

That's fifteen dollars a good budget for a bow. Do
you have sights and all that stuff?

Speaker 1 (20:54):
Already.

I think that that's gonna be a low for a
new bow with all the accessories, right, Yeah, I think
that that's what a new bowl with tex is going
to cost you.

Speaker 4 (21:03):
Bear Bo Yeah, probably about right. What kind of bows
are you guys shooting?

Speaker 1 (21:10):
I got a lot of Botex.

Speaker 5 (21:12):
Yeah, I've been shooting like SS thirty four. Like I said,
there's a Potex sense of stuff. So I mean, when
you can get a two thousand dollars set up for free,
it's hard not to. If I'm being frank, I'm not
trying to say. I'm just saying like we're blessed to
be sent some bows. If everybody was sending us bows,
and I would choose the one that I like the best.

But there's just a few bows being sent to the house.
So I still have my Elite. I might shoot that
at some point, Tom.

Speaker 1 (21:38):
Yeah, it shoots, really, it is a good shooting, but
just isn't real fast. Yeah.

But I have one of their newer SR Core. I
think it's called I hadn't set it up yet, but
I'm gonna set it up and I'll shoot it a
little bit and try to let you know. When I
think about it. We might do a video over it.

Speaker 4 (22:17):
What are some things to do in the winter time
to get ready for next year season? Is that we're
scouting with a foot of snow on the ground.

Speaker 1 (22:24):
I would increase your personal insulation follows you. That's what
I've been doing. Call that p I.

Speaker 3 (22:32):
You know, we used to really put a lot of
effort into postseason scouting and we don't anymore. Lazy, yeah, busy,
lazy yeah. I think I think that if you had
like a personal property of like two hundred acres, it
really could pay off. But public land is so volatile
here where we live, Like there's so many people that

(22:56):
if your area suddenly gets pressure, like the area you
put your scouting time into, it gets pressure that year
like it did in the year before, it could change.

Speaker 1 (23:05):
So it's almost like it's just not worth it.

Speaker 3 (23:06):
I don't know if we've ever postseason scattered our way
into killing a big buck we have we're at.

Speaker 5 (23:14):
I would scowl this and put of snow on the
ground personally if you have the time. So like personally
right now, it's hard for me to find the time
to just go go over and scout somewhere, you know,
even locally or whatever. But we found We were squirrel
hunting a few years back in the snow and we
found a place that we call four Corners, and it

(23:41):
is a place that a buck was killed.

Speaker 3 (23:47):
And now it's twenty years later. I think a lot
of people on trail camera. Yeah, it's weird. Yeah, I don't.

Speaker 5 (23:51):
I think that's coincidence. I think there's a lot of
people on our trail cameras this year. And I think
that that's more just an increase in pressure this year.
And there'll be evan ful to that, I think usually
because those guys, all those guys will be unsuccessful more
likely just because this is a terrible piece of property overall,
you know, and so there will be they will struggle,

(24:14):
and then they won't come back the next year, and
then there will be a new group, or they'll get
fired up two years from now and have more time
or whatever, you know. So I would say that if
you have the time, if you had the fire and
the gumption, then go out there and scout in the
snow right now. If nothing else, it gives you an
idea of late season next year what will happen. And

I mean hanging cameras right now is a good way
to see like what you can potentially do in the
late season after the rut next year if you get
similar conditions, similar pressure. But while I say that Casey
is very right, a lot of our scouting on public
land has been futile because it is so volatile. Somebody
said turn the volume up or any of y'all having

problems with that? Other than that guy, we're also seeing
different stuff than he's seen over here. I haven't seen
any of the correlations, but yeah, like it, keep them coming.

If you had to pick one to focus on for
a mature buck, which one would it be?

That kind of like geon, I would hunt white tails
because there's a really good chance that that's the most
populous of those three, because you're in a really specific
area if you have milder and blacktail, and the chances

of those deer growing to maturity are probably better because
white tails just proliferate like crazy.

There's a lot of people to take and I've noticed

just grab some food from a commnice store and eat

Most of the times on a hunt like that, I've
spcouted a lot on on X beforehand, and I have
a couple ideas of what to do on certain wind directions,
And if I end up doing some scouting, it's glassing.

don't have a good wind to go to one of
the places that I wanted to go to.

The most I ever drove scouting on out of state
hunt was the first year in South Dakota.

stepping out in the cold. And the other thing is
that I like to sit around camp and jack around
