in this case we're talking about dunkers. You gotta have creativity,
you gotta have wingspan, you got to be able to
dunk endgame and on the main age.

And again, this is goat greatest of their era. This
is not the greatest dunker of all time. This is
the era so anywhere from the ninety nine, two thousand
up to two thousand and nine twenty ten, that that
got a little bit of leeway in there. But this
is the dunkers of the two thousands. If you major

favorite topics we could come up with.

This is this is real barbershop talk and growing up
for me, this is really well what made me fall
in love with the game. One of the reasons I
would I would go through those Slam magazines and I
don't know about you, but we don't know about the
Slam magazine posters.

Every time you open up, at least one of the
posters was somebody getting dunked on.

the greatest dunkers of the two thousands.

mean and like, you know, you fell in love with
the dunk, Like, when was the first time you ever dunked?

I don't want to add that's embarrassing, but it was
Honestly my senior year in high school. I had like
one or two dunks in practice. My senior year high school,
I was seventeen.

That's probably why I love this topic so much, because
that's not me. So yeah, I'm the complete opposite. I
started dunking in eighth grade, started with the tennis ball,
and then I used to wear the jump sos. That
was the one thing I thought, like, if you could dunk,
you can go to the NBA. And I was just like,
all right, I'm wearing jumpsons with my clothes. I'm just
just fired up. I'm just thinking that's just gonna help.
But you know, the irony of things. You know, twenty

five years ago, Vince Carter he has one of the
greatest dunk contest performances of all time in our era.

Do you agree, Oh, that's a fact. I don't think
anybody can argue.

That's that's really what stamped then brought the dunk contest back,
really stamped him. Probably stamped him as a national worldwide star.
He went on that stage in the Oakland and put
on the show.

I mean the one dunk that I remember is him
putting his arm in the rim and then just kind
of hanging up there and then kind of jumping off
and not just like paused, like Yo, did that just happen?
Like I can't believe. I mean, you know, we've seen
an East Bab before, people go between your legs and
do those type of things, and you know, even the
windmill and the three sixty windmill, but like that one
where you hung in the rim, I don't even think

that was possible, and it just kind of kicked off
the thing. But you know what I noticed in dunk contest,
Vince Carter never missed his first dunk.

That's a good point because when you have a dunker,
a special dunker, you watch him in the dunk I
test after the first attempt, you don't really want to
see it two three times over and over, no matter
how good the dunk is when they complete it, if
you don't do it on the first attempt, you getting
the deducted points everybody's and you don't hit the same
But e Vince the special ones. You saw every dunk

he did once and finished it on the first try,
like he knew he could do it. Some of them
were crazy high difficulty, but he made him look easy.
And it's definitely a talent and ass to the flair
when you get the dunk on the first opportunity.

As we mentioned Vince Carter, there's other dunkers that like
put it on for the two thousands, right, we got
Jason Richardson, we got Nate Robinson, you know what I mean.

It's probably one of the most underrated in my favorite
of the two thousands. So that's the person I'm really
going to bat forward because he won the most dunk
titles in the Slam Dunk Contest it was five to
nine super athletic.

You got a chance to play against Nate, So what
was that like? You know what I mean, Like did
he ever like were you like amazed to see somebody
shorter than you be that athletic?
Speaker 4 (04:42):
Yeah, and they was a super athlete and he's one
of the few that like you. She showed it in
games and in dunk contests. So like his whole game
was he could shoot the ball, he could do everything,
but even on his shot, he elevated, got up high.
He would attack the rim as a five with five
to nine guard. He would attack the rim and finish
over with bigs trying to dunk on sinners. And I think, yeah,

this two thousands group is it's special, man, because like
the special thing about the two thousands when you're talking
about the greatest dunkers of this era, this is the
first time you've seen a lot of these dunks that
these guys did. So like now in today's era, you
see some of the dunk you're like three sixty women,
it's all right, I mean, it's cool, But back then,
it's like, oh, that's the craziest thing I ever saw.

When you see when you see Vince do some of
those dunks in that dunk contest, every one was the
first time we saw it pretty much, or at least
that good.

But now, I mean, it's it's so much that goes
into dunking in itself. Right, It's one thing to get
a one hand dunk, two hand dunk, but timing is everything.
Like if you can't palm the ball, you're not gonna
be able to complete certain dunks. If you don't have
good coordination, you're not going to be able to complete
certain dunks. So, like the criteria to even be considered
a great dunker, what do you think has to be,

you know, in that dunker's cat, in a dunker's bag
basically to be able to be a great dunker.

In my opinion, to be a great dunker, it's not
just about having hops, having a forty ins vert being
a player. I've been around a lot of NBA players,
cause guys, even high school guys who had crazy bounced
but weren't really good game dunkers. You got to be
able to get to it. So you got to have
the footwork, got to have ball in handling, but probably
the main thing, you got to be fearless. You got

to go in there willing to get your head taken
off sometimes. And even in the two thousands, I think
every team had a seven foot center that was in
there protecting the paint. So you got to be willing
to go in there and try to take them on
and try to dunk on them and finish over them.

So yeah, absolutely, I do think there has to be
I think that's maybe one of the things that isn't
mentioned the most, Like the most is the fearlessness, right,
because that's like, no, you gotta be you gotta have hops,
you gotta be able to pall on the ball. You
gotta be able to do this.

But like you have to be able to attempt it,
you know what I mean.

Like that's the first thing, whether you jump over somebody,
you jump over an object, Like, that's fearlessness, you know
what I mean, Because like your trusting height, you're trusting
the timing.

There's so many other things that goes into it.

And the creativity you gotta be you got you gotta
be creative.

The creativity has to be there.

Yeah, I mean, but that's the that's the underrated thing
about dunk contests. Most of the time they have dunk coaches,
you know what I mean, Like they're not technically doing
this by itself. They have professional dunk dunk coach dunk
coaches that help right and just say all right, yo,
you can try this, but you gotta make sure that
you you know, get a lib right and all that stuff.

So, I mean, I look at it. I look at
it from that situation.

But my my basic criteria, like you mentioned, it's so
many guys that we both played with that have like
unbelievable hops, but they just can't deliver on the creativity side.
And I think about so many, like you know, like
everybody's like, oh, what if Lebron was in a dunk contest?

dunk contest, and it wasn't that appealing to me, Like

I never loved that.

just don't know. I think he probably would have got
beat out by some of the guys that I'm about
to mention.

five wing with. Athleticism he would he was attacking a
room and. Transition every every time he went in the,
paint he was trying to dunk. Somebody so he was

HE i think his name got out there by going

doesn't get the much like the love of like taking

What the greatest is or what will be assessed right,
individual stats, championships, influence on the game, cultural impact, and
in this case we're talking about dunkers. You gotta have creativity,
you gotta have wingspan, you got to be able to
dunk endgame and on the main age.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
That's how we determined the greatest of their era.
Speaker 4 (01:03):
And again, this is goat greatest of their era. This
is not the greatest dunker of all time. This is
the era so anywhere from the ninety nine, two thousand
up to two thousand and nine twenty ten, that that
got a little bit of leeway in there. But this
is the dunkers of the two thousands. If you major
market in this era, you're in the discussion.

Ceth, how did we get into this topic sheet?
Speaker 3 (01:24):
This is this is exciting. This is one of my
favorite topics we could come up with.
Speaker 4 (01:27):
This is this is real barbershop talk and growing up
for me, this is really well what made me fall
in love with the game. One of the reasons I
would I would go through those Slam magazines and I
don't know about you, but we don't know about the
Slam magazine posters.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
In the middle of the magazine.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
Every time you open up, at least one of the
posters was somebody getting dunked on.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
It was that term.
Speaker 4 (01:45):
It's really what coined the term poster probably, so we
had to we had to chop it up and talk
the greatest dunkers of the two thousands.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
Yeah, yeah, they were called slam ups. Yeah, but it's interesting.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
You come from a shooter's family, you know what I
mean and like, you know, you fell in love with
the dunk, Like, when was the first time you ever dunked?
Speaker 4 (02:04):
I don't want to add that's embarrassing, but it was
Honestly my senior year in high school. I had like
one or two dunks in practice. My senior year high school,
I was seventeen.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
No hops.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
That's probably why I love this topic so much, because
that's not me. So yeah, I'm the complete opposite. I
started dunking in eighth grade, started with the tennis ball,
and then I used to wear the jump sos. That
was the one thing I thought, like, if you could dunk,
you can go to the NBA. And I was just like,
all right, I'm wearing jumpsons with my clothes. I'm just
just fired up. I'm just thinking that's just gonna help.
But you know, the irony of things. You know, twenty
(02:40):
five years ago, Vince Carter he has one of the
greatest dunk contest performances of all time in our era.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
Do you agree, Oh, that's a fact. I don't think
anybody can argue.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
That's that's really what stamped then brought the dunk contest back,
really stamped him. Probably stamped him as a national worldwide star.
He went on that stage in the Oakland and put
on the show.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
I mean the one dunk that I remember is him
putting his arm in the rim and then just kind
of hanging up there and then kind of jumping off
and not just like paused, like Yo, did that just happen?
Like I can't believe. I mean, you know, we've seen
an East Bab before, people go between your legs and
do those type of things, and you know, even the
windmill and the three sixty windmill, but like that one
where you hung in the rim, I don't even think
(03:24):
that was possible, and it just kind of kicked off
the thing. But you know what I noticed in dunk contest,
Vince Carter never missed his first dunk.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
That's a good point because when you have a dunker,
a special dunker, you watch him in the dunk I
test after the first attempt, you don't really want to
see it two three times over and over, no matter
how good the dunk is when they complete it, if
you don't do it on the first attempt, you getting
the deducted points everybody's and you don't hit the same
But e Vince the special ones. You saw every dunk
(03:57):
he did once and finished it on the first try,
like he knew he could do it. Some of them
were crazy high difficulty, but he made him look easy.
And it's definitely a talent and ass to the flair
when you get the dunk on the first opportunity.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
As we mentioned Vince Carter, there's other dunkers that like
put it on for the two thousands, right, we got
Jason Richardson, we got Nate Robinson, you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
Like Nate Robinson.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
It's probably one of the most underrated in my favorite
of the two thousands. So that's the person I'm really
going to bat forward because he won the most dunk
titles in the Slam Dunk Contest it was five to
nine super athletic.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
You got a chance to play against Nate, So what
was that like? You know what I mean, Like did
he ever like were you like amazed to see somebody
shorter than you be that athletic?
Speaker 4 (04:42):
Yeah, and they was a super athlete and he's one
of the few that like you. She showed it in
games and in dunk contests. So like his whole game
was he could shoot the ball, he could do everything,
but even on his shot, he elevated, got up high.
He would attack the rim as a five with five
to nine guard. He would attack the rim and finish
over with bigs trying to dunk on sinners. And I think, yeah,
(05:05):
this two thousands group is it's special, man, because like
the special thing about the two thousands when you're talking
about the greatest dunkers of this era, this is the
first time you've seen a lot of these dunks that
these guys did. So like now in today's era, you
see some of the dunk you're like three sixty women,
it's all right, I mean, it's cool, But back then,
it's like, oh, that's the craziest thing I ever saw.
(05:26):
When you see when you see Vince do some of
those dunks in that dunk contest, every one was the
first time we saw it pretty much, or at least
that good.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
But now, I mean, it's it's so much that goes
into dunking in itself. Right, It's one thing to get
a one hand dunk, two hand dunk, but timing is everything.
Like if you can't palm the ball, you're not gonna
be able to complete certain dunks. If you don't have
good coordination, you're not going to be able to complete
certain dunks. So, like the criteria to even be considered
a great dunker, what do you think has to be,
(05:55):
you know, in that dunker's cat, in a dunker's bag
basically to be able to be a great dunker.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
In my opinion, to be a great dunker, it's not
just about having hops, having a forty ins vert being
a player. I've been around a lot of NBA players,
cause guys, even high school guys who had crazy bounced
but weren't really good game dunkers. You got to be
able to get to it. So you got to have
the footwork, got to have ball in handling, but probably
the main thing, you got to be fearless. You got
(06:21):
to go in there willing to get your head taken
off sometimes. And even in the two thousands, I think
every team had a seven foot center that was in
there protecting the paint. So you got to be willing
to go in there and try to take them on
and try to dunk on them and finish over them.

So yeah, absolutely, I do think there has to be
I think that's maybe one of the things that isn't
mentioned the most, Like the most is the fearlessness, right,
because that's like, no, you gotta be you gotta have hops,
you gotta be able to pall on the ball. You
gotta be able to do this.
