week of classic hits on the MLB bro Show Podcast
The Mixtape. Today, I want to give some flowers to
possibly the most class a hitter of the last fifty years,
Mister Tony Gwinn. Tony Gwinn, also known as Mister Padre,
racked up three and forty one hits during a twenty
year career, all spent in San Diego. Gwinn was one

of those rare superstars who became synonymous not just with
their team, but with their cities. Tony was born and
raised in La watching the Dodgers, Willie Davis and Rod
Caru of the Angels, along with Pete Rose and George
Brett to learn about being a complete hitter, but his
first love was basketball. He went to Long Beach Polytech,
and while his baseball teams won three games, over his
last two years, Tony led the hoop squad to back

to back state finals. Only one school in the country
would let him play both baseball and basketball, San Diego State.
He was a two time All American on the diamond
and an All Conference selection on the court. Tony Gwinn
still holds the Aztecs career CIS record. In three seasons
of baseball, he batted three to ninety eight, drawing the
attention of the Padres, who draft him in the third
round of the nineteen eighty one draft. He'd also been

selected by the San Diego Clippers in the tenth round
of the NBA draft. With Dave Winfield leaving the po
and for the New York Yankees after the nineteen eighty season,
San Diego needed a star, and they didn't have to
wait long for Tony Gwinn to prove that he was
going to be one. After batting three thirty one with
twelve home runs in seventeen stolen bases in forty two
games a single league ball as a rookie, Gwinn hit
two ninety eight, marking the only season in his entire

career where he would finish below three hundred. As a
young hitter, Gwinn would be at the lead of a
revolution in baseball. As one of the first players to
understand the impact that video could have on the game.
Gwyn meticulously recorded and logged each of his ad bets,
saying plainly that video saved his career, and while that
was probably an overstatement, it was a testament to the
type of attention to detail and love for hitting that

Tony Gwinn had over two decades. Gwinn never experienced baseball's
ultimate joy, that of winning a World Championship, but he
was able to lead the Padres to their first two
World Series appearances in the franchise's history. Unfortunately, he ran
up against the nineteen eighty four Tigers, which led the
American League from starting to finish, and then in nineteen
ninety eight, it was the New York Yankees juggered out

that swept San Diego with a back five hundred in
the series, going eight for sixteen more than just a hitter.
Winn also won five goal gloves, regularly placing him on
the league leaders in outfield assists. He could steal bases,
he knew the game inside it out, made the All

became one of the great ambassadors of the game. After

his retirement, he also led his alma Maters baseball program
for more than a decade. Tony Will was diagnosed with
cancer in twenty ten, and his health began to deteriorate
before he passed away at the age of fifty four

The Mixtape. Today, I want to give some flowers to
possibly the most class a hitter of the last fifty years,
Mister Tony Gwinn. Tony Gwinn, also known as Mister Padre,
racked up three and forty one hits during a twenty
year career, all spent in San Diego. Gwinn was one

of those rare superstars who became synonymous not just with
their team, but with their cities. Tony was born and
raised in La watching the Dodgers, Willie Davis and Rod
Caru of the Angels, along with Pete Rose and George
Brett to learn about being a complete hitter, but his
first love was basketball. He went to Long Beach Polytech,
and while his baseball teams won three games, over his
last two years, Tony led the hoop squad to back

to back state finals. Only one school in the country
would let him play both baseball and basketball, San Diego State.
He was a two time All American on the diamond
and an All Conference selection on the court. Tony Gwinn
still holds the Aztecs career CIS record. In three seasons
of baseball, he batted three to ninety eight, drawing the
attention of the Padres, who draft him in the third
round of the nineteen eighty one draft. He'd also been

selected by the San Diego Clippers in the tenth round
of the NBA draft. With Dave Winfield leaving the po
and for the New York Yankees after the nineteen eighty season,
San Diego needed a star, and they didn't have to
wait long for Tony Gwinn to prove that he was
going to be one. After batting three thirty one with
twelve home runs in seventeen stolen bases in forty two
games a single league ball as a rookie, Gwinn hit
two ninety eight, marking the only season in his entire

career where he would finish below three hundred. As a
young hitter, Gwinn would be at the lead of a
revolution in baseball. As one of the first players to
understand the impact that video could have on the game.
Gwyn meticulously recorded and logged each of his ad bets,
saying plainly that video saved his career, and while that
was probably an overstatement, it was a testament to the
type of attention to detail and love for hitting that

Tony Gwinn had over two decades. Gwinn never experienced baseball's
ultimate joy, that of winning a World Championship, but he
was able to lead the Padres to their first two
World Series appearances in the franchise's history. Unfortunately, he ran
up against the nineteen eighty four Tigers, which led the
American League from starting to finish, and then in nineteen
ninety eight, it was the New York Yankees juggered out

that swept San Diego with a back five hundred in
the series, going eight for sixteen more than just a hitter.
Winn also won five goal gloves, regularly placing him on
the league leaders in outfield assists. He could steal bases,
he knew the game inside it out, made the All

became one of the great ambassadors of the game. After

his retirement, he also led his alma Maters baseball program
for more than a decade. Tony Will was diagnosed with
cancer in twenty ten, and his health began to deteriorate
before he passed away at the age of fifty four
