Speaker 6 (03:50):
What's up, Everybody? I'm David Grubb, and welcome to another
week of classic hits on the MLB bro Show Podcast
The Mixtape. Today, I want to give some flowers to
possibly the most class a hitter of the last fifty years,
Mister Tony Gwinn. Tony Gwinn, also known as Mister Padre,
racked up three and forty one hits during a twenty
year career, all spent in San Diego. Gwinn was one
(04:12):
of those rare superstars who became synonymous not just with
their team, but with their cities. Tony was born and
raised in La watching the Dodgers, Willie Davis and Rod
Caru of the Angels, along with Pete Rose and George
Brett to learn about being a complete hitter, but his
first love was basketball. He went to Long Beach Polytech,
and while his baseball teams won three games, over his
last two years, Tony led the hoop squad to back
(04:33):
to back state finals. Only one school in the country
would let him play both baseball and basketball, San Diego State.
He was a two time All American on the diamond
and an All Conference selection on the court. Tony Gwinn
still holds the Aztecs career CIS record. In three seasons
of baseball, he batted three to ninety eight, drawing the
attention of the Padres, who draft him in the third
round of the nineteen eighty one draft. He'd also been
(04:54):
selected by the San Diego Clippers in the tenth round
of the NBA draft. With Dave Winfield leaving the po
and for the New York Yankees after the nineteen eighty season,
San Diego needed a star, and they didn't have to
wait long for Tony Gwinn to prove that he was
going to be one. After batting three thirty one with
twelve home runs in seventeen stolen bases in forty two
games a single league ball as a rookie, Gwinn hit
two ninety eight, marking the only season in his entire
(05:16):
career where he would finish below three hundred. As a
young hitter, Gwinn would be at the lead of a
revolution in baseball. As one of the first players to
understand the impact that video could have on the game.
Gwyn meticulously recorded and logged each of his ad bets,
saying plainly that video saved his career, and while that
was probably an overstatement, it was a testament to the
type of attention to detail and love for hitting that
(05:38):
Tony Gwinn had over two decades. Gwinn never experienced baseball's
ultimate joy, that of winning a World Championship, but he
was able to lead the Padres to their first two
World Series appearances in the franchise's history. Unfortunately, he ran
up against the nineteen eighty four Tigers, which led the
American League from starting to finish, and then in nineteen
ninety eight, it was the New York Yankees juggered out
(05:58):
that swept San Diego with a back five hundred in
the series, going eight for sixteen more than just a hitter.
Winn also won five goal gloves, regularly placing him on
the league leaders in outfield assists. He could steal bases,
he knew the game inside it out, made the All
Star team fifteen times, eleven as a starter, and he
became one of the great ambassadors of the game. After
(06:18):
his retirement, he also led his alma Maters baseball program
for more than a decade. Tony Will was diagnosed with
cancer in twenty ten, and his health began to deteriorate
before he passed away at the age of fifty four
in twenty fourteen. But Tony gwyn Will endure as a
Southern California icon and MLB bro legend. That's my time,
(06:39):
I'm David Grubb and This has been classic hits on
the MLB bro podcast Mixteam.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Oh Indeed with Og Margray.
Speaker 7 (06:58):
With Dollar's gone wrong with the same Louis Cardinals the season?
Was it the right thing to do to send their
top prospect to the minors? Which she bought the Mlbog
Mark Ray and I'm going deep for the mixtape. Despite
being at the bottom of the National League Central Division
and needing a boost, the Redbird sent their Veena and
Choldren Walker back to the minors. The question is why
(07:19):
it's not Walker's fault. The team got off to such
an awful start. They lost nineteen of their first twenty
nine games to open the season, and what did they do?
They set that brightest prospect and MLB Bro down the
Triple A Memphis. Why what does Walker game by going
back to the minors? If he's supposed to be a
cornerstone of their future, why not let him tick to
(07:41):
the Swings and Missus at the major league level. By
no stretch of the imagination, doesn't make sense for them
to play against minor league pitching when he's showing a
glimpse already of what may become the face of the franchise.
Type of talent. This blitz was solid for a real
bat in two seventy four, three twenty one, three ninety
(08:03):
seven with two homers and eleven RBI, and he also
had two stolen bases in only seventy eight plate appearances.
But it's potential to become a generation talent. This just
flies in the face of conventional wisdom. He won't get
any better playing against inferior talent. Then the Cardinals used
(08:23):
the convenient log jam in the outfield argument so they
could get him more batch in the minors as an
excuse to send them back. Please, the Cardinals are so
bad right now. They resemble the Triple A team playing
in a Major League park on every night. Even Stevie
Wonder and Ray Charles conceded this is nothing more than
a ploy to keep the care from arbitration for as
(08:45):
long as possible. The bottom line is the problems with
the Cardinals started the manager Oliver Momar, who is clearly
overmatched at this point, and after this bookning day shenand
Against with outfielder Tyler O'Neill, we threw under the bus
public leag questioning his effort after he was thrown out
of the late in a four to one loss. The
(09:06):
problems in Saint Louis are not with the lineup, They're
in the overmatched manager's office and Walker be used to
be a part of the solution while Marmal is the
real issue. It's your boy Mark Greg the mlbog and
I'm going d or the.
Speaker 8 (09:23):
Mixt It's the black A Support, the Black A Support.
It's the black As Report, the Black As Report.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
What's up, everybody? This is Jessic Patrilly with the Black
Ace Report on the MLB Bro Show podcast mixtape. Here's
where you get the latest on the melanated Mault Marauders
who are shoving with precision and popping out all across
the big leagues. So let's check the report. Josiah Gray
is starting to heat up. He had another house standy
start on April thirtieth, again the Pirates, where he pitched
(10:01):
six innings, allowing three hits, one run, and earned his
second straight win of the season. He's got a two
point six to seven ERA and has allowed to combine
five runs at his past five starts.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
Hunter Green was.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
Absolutely dominant in his most recent start, where he pitched
five innings, did not allow a single earned run, and
has struck out ten batters. His next started schedule for Friday,
made bit against the White Sox. Marcus Strowman had two
quality starts over the past week, pitching at least six
innings both times and not allowing more than two runs
at either start. He now has a two point one
(10:33):
eight er, which is six bests in the National League.
Devin Airbender Williams continues to be lights out for the Brewers.
He's now appeared in ten games, has allowed to combine
five hits, and has fourteen strikeouts, and still hasn't allowed
a single run. He's only one of three relievers in
the MLB to pitch in at least ten games and
still have a perfect dra. It was great news for
(10:55):
Guardians fans over the weekend, with Tristan McKenzie throwing his
first bullpen sessions and placed on the injured list with
a strange shoulder. He managed to throw twenty fast balls
without any problems. That's the Black Cass report for this week.
This is j P the rook Now back to the mix.
Speaker 9 (11:17):
The random World champion Houston Astros is gifted a sweet
Sweet Surprised by Raps and Sation, Travis Scott, the beautiful news,
super expensive. Travis Scott, Jordan's the care package to ride
for each player and each one of them super extended.
Travis Scott said his letter, you make the city of
Houston proud playing the greatest game on Earth at the
highest level.
Speaker 10 (11:36):
World Champs.
Speaker 9 (11:37):
Let's win another. As you can see the buzz around
the league, it's to sound a black baseball. The general manager,
Dussie Baker said it was real cool, but I didn't
know the value of what I got. MLB Brodoyte comments
created a whole new audience for the MLB. You don't
realize the significance that has to the league starting to
scratch the surface of being one of the most relevant
sports again. The twenty twenty three Poper Bowl had roughly
(12:01):
one hundred and thirteen million viewers, compared to the twenty
twenty two World Series that averaged that four point three million.
The culture is shifted and a connection to the melanated
Kings is growing right in front of our eyes. The
team also had Lil Wayne as a visitor. The hip
hop Pike Con stopped there during the Houston leg of
its current tour. The team welcomes in with open arms
when stars like Wayne embraced baseball, more fans gravitate to
(12:24):
sound of black baseball resonating in society, and hopefully you
realize the importance of mlbbro dot com and what the
brown community means to the sport of baseball.
Speaker 4 (12:36):

Speaker 11 (14:41):
I'm Sebastianball and I'm the numbers Man, some well known
like the numble Man. Lamont Wade Junior played through the
twenty twenty two season as a serviceable platoon bat for
the Giants. However, this season he has developed into an
elite hitting machine and has been a bright spot in
San Francisco. Wade was a good hitter last year when
facing right handed pitchers, notching a one to eleven way
(15:04):
to runs created plus against them Against However, his negative
twenty eight way to runs created plus last season against
lefties forced him to be used almost exclusively in a
platoon role. This season has been much different for late
night Lamon, as he has a one to eighty two
way he runs creative plus against righty's and one to
fifty three against lefties. Joined the heat progressed to elite
levels against both lefties and righty's. One of the most
(15:26):
impressive changes in his game is his increase in walks,
going from walking ten point four percent of the time
in twenty twenty two walking an astounding twenty one point
four percent of the time. As of May second, twenty
twenty three, he lands seventh in all of baseball and
water runs creative plus, twenty ninth in fangras wins above replacement,
and he is in the ninety eight percent tile and
(15:46):
expected weight on base average, showing that his hitting improvement
is not the result of luck, as his batt ball
numbers back up his actual results in production production, Wade
has already increased his fangrass wins above replacement by five
hundred percent while playing just thirty four percent of the
games he played last season. Defensively, he has been serviceable
at first base with one defensive run saved and zero
(16:08):
outs above average, while also being serviced on the outfield
zero defensive run saved and negative one out above average.
On the basis, he has a base running runs above
average of zero point zero, showing that he has no
real problems in his game while being a spectacular bat
right now. Lamontway Junior is said to be arbitration eligible
next season, and this elite production can make Way a
(16:29):
very wealthy man in the near future. He can be
an important piece for a potentially contending Giants team in
twenty twenty four. And that's it. Numbers never lie, so
until the next episode. This is Sebastian Ball, the numbers Man,
bringing you the metrics on the MLB Bros.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
Because say to speak, some well known't like the number Man.
Speaker 6 (16:49):
He's the numbers Man, mlbbro dot COM's analytical whiz Sebastian Ball.

Speaker 10 (20:12):
What's up, everybody? This is Young Krit and this is
my weekly cound out of the biggest plays made by
MLB bros over the past seven days. This week come
again at number five. We had West Coast bro JP
Crawford bran into one last week, both in a Grand
Slam against the Phillies for his first time rund of
the year. Up next at number four, Royal's outfitter Cedric
(20:34):
Mullins pot himself a nice week hitting in following seven
games with a double in the trip. Sitting in the
three spot, we've got Marlin centerfielder Jazz Chisholm pot himself
a final game hitting streak, ending in a big way
with three hits on Saturday against the Clubs and at
number two this week, Red flame thrower Hunter Green has
(20:55):
been locked in lately. In the last two audis, He's
on eleven innings along non hits, run on a run
and pushed down sixteen backs and finally number one on
Chris Countdown. Naxt Son Josiah Gray has been dealing over
the past week in two outings. He threw twelve innings,
allowing seven hits, one run, and collected fifteen strikeouts. The
(21:19):
bro seems to be locked in and he turned the
corner and you should have a really, really successful season.
And that's it until next time. I'm Young Chris and
this has been Chris Countdown on the mb Bro Show
podcast mixtape. Now back to the mix.
Speaker 12 (21:38):
Aaron Judge's worth is not debatable.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
It really isn't unroll.
Speaker 4 (21:46):
And that's where.
Speaker 12 (21:48):
Anybody who thinks this guy is just a home run
hitter doesn't know anything about baseball. He's so vital to
a team as the Yankees, who lost their first games
when he couldn't play because of a bad hip and
was eventually put on the injured list for ten days.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
The Yankees didn't look like the same.
Speaker 12 (22:10):
Team that started this season or played the last few
years with him in the lineup. That's why he got
the bag nine years, three hundred and sixty million dollar
free agent contract. He hit over three hundred sixty two
home runs, over one hundred RBIs.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
He does so many different things. He adds to the lineup.
Speaker 12 (22:32):
He gives protection, he gives you a sense that he
can help you win a game with his glove and
with his bad Don't sleep on Aaron Judge. He's got
enormous value and the Yankees aren't the same team without them.
Thank god they finally got a win on Tuesday to
(22:53):
snap their four game losing streak. Memo to Aaron Judge,
get back to the Bronx asam, the Yankees need you.
Speaker 4 (23:03):
I'm rob and that's my rand. It's the Brozen's back,
