Speaker 1 (00:00):
No, no, no no, no no, no no, no, no, no no no, that's
actually actually, are you guys trying to warm up because
that's not how you warm up your voice? And who
are you? Um? Yeah, like what do you even know
the password? Or like were you even on Broadway? Actually
I was on Broadway doing what did you sing? Or
(00:21):
were you just like a like a little bush in
the background? Um, I was in a show called Hamilton's.
I've never heard of that show? Yeah yeah, yeah, no,
no, no no, we're actually the third best see sorry yes,
oh um, well kidding. Here. My name is Curly and
I'm Maya and welcome to the Super Secret Club podcast,
(00:43):
a super secret club where we talk about super secret
things a super secret, more time super secret. In each episode,
we'll talk about love, friendships, heartbreaks, men, and of course
our favorite secrets. Wow, finally I was able to get
(01:03):
into the room where it happens. Apparently. Oh I got
stopped right now. That's so cool that you were in
Uh yes, I was in Alexander Amiton the musical. Hello everyone,
welcome to the Super Secret Bestie Club. I'm so excited
because I'm a musical girl. Okay, Like I love musicals
(01:26):
and we have and I also just got back from
New York too, and I saw an off Broadway show
but like, you know, it was great, but I was like, oh,
I wish I was friends with the Broadway actress and
now I'm best friends with one introducing Darylynksto. Wait, what
(01:49):
off Broadway show did you see? I saw America. I
knew it. I knew it because I'm from Phoenix, and
I mean I was around when all that stuff started
happening with s P ten seventy, and like I saw
the musical. My mom and I went to go see it.
We were just like blown away because number one, they
(02:10):
had all these different things about Phoenix in there, and
I was like, why am I I'm in New York
City right now watching a musical about my town? Weird?
It was very wild, weird, surreal, super crazy, goofy. You know,
I know nothing about New York. I'm like an l
A boy, so to me, everything else is like it
(02:32):
doesn't matter. So I never understand when people are like
where I'm here and I'm like, oh cool, it sounds
like Anaheim or Orange County to me in my head
like basically, yeah, now are you like in like you said,
you're like in a nature area. I like the woods.
Like I just went walking before coming on here. It
was like walking main Street, went and got a little frozen.
(02:54):
How beautiful? Did you always know that you were going
to get into the business that you're in? You since
I was five? How did you know? I got to
open up for Yolanda Adams at the age of five,
you guys, amen? And um that was by the way,
she still has not Yeah, she's like not aging at all. Um. Yeah,
(03:19):
I got to have the opportunity to open up for her.
I sang a song in Swahili a five and ever
since then it was like I turned to my mom
and dad and I'm like, this is what I want
to do for the rest of my life. So for
everyone listening, we like, we're so like a d d S. Sometimes.
Darrel it is is our guest on the podcast right now.
(03:42):
She's a Broadway actress. She also hosts a podcast. Do
you want to explain a little bit? Yeah, I host
a podcast called mona Um. We kind of just like
interview really dope people in our community, in the Lucky
Net community, and we highlight them and we talk about
specific issues. Like recently we had a really good friend
(04:03):
of Mikelvaya talking about maternal desire and like women in
our thirties and can we have it all? Can we
have a family? Can we have the career? I just
recently got engaged, So it's like, oh, yes the ring.
Real love is real, baby love is real, I promise,
(04:24):
girly okay um. Yeah. So we talked about a lot
of like real ship. In the beginning, when we started
the podcast, it was very interview like very like this
is this person, this is that person. But now we're
really like diving into like mount that two point oh
where we're like really talking about specific things that really
(04:47):
like affect our community that we don't actually talk about.
We talked about generational wealth, real estate, also like money.
We talk about mental health. We talked about a lot
of things, and we talked to specialists and people like
but within our community who are like doing the dancing.
You know, I love that, which is so much better too,
because like, let's say I would have dinner with you
and a friend or any of us who were at
a dinner table, we wouldn't necessarily be like all about
(05:10):
us and the whole three hours until to be but
we would talk about real life events and you know,
and be a part. Oh my god, I'm hearing you
and have you know, being these conversations with each other.
So I think that's really good. That's amazing putting them
on the forefront. You know, what's you're signing? Yeah, I'm
a libra libra I, libra girls, libor men are a
little weird, libre women, libre friens. What's getting into the
(05:34):
sign thing? Might soon to be husband, he's a he's
a Leo Alo loved. I don't really know like that
about signs. I just downloaded costar, so I mean you
get into that. We have an astrology section, so we're
gonna we're gonna die, all my god. Okay, let's talk
(05:56):
about musical Yeah, because we're both like a musical fan.
I feel like I pull Curly a lot into Yeah,
I don't have the attention fan for musicals, to be honest,
but like, if you're like, listen to this song and
I'm like this song is really good, I will like
totally get into it. I have been a Broadway stand
since so, I mean I think all of us really
(06:17):
have been since we were little. Like I think it
probably started with like Disney movies and you know all
that stuff. But I want to know what was that
one musical growing up that is still like so close
to your heart? Because sometimes for me, I'll like there's
a song from like Shrek the musical. I love that.
Then I'm like, yes, that still rings true to my heart.
(06:40):
Do you have anything like that, m like from like
back in the day, something that really is like your
north star that helps you. I don't know. I love
like sad songs. I'm such like, oh my god, I
love to cry, like me to I could be in
the happiest moment in my life and I'm just like
(07:00):
a sad song. Which that's when you're like when you're
really sad and you're like, I need some good music.
I need to be happy, and you play your little
like I don't know what is it called your iPod,
your phone, you'r and then you're like every song is
so sad, Like I only listened to super sad music
because I tell you on that, I guess I would say,
like my favorite song music like and I guess it's
(07:22):
a song that I just love singing. I love like
Burn from Hamilton's I love Eliza stuff like how does
burn the man um How does it go? How does
it go? I saved every letter I wrote you from
the moment I read them. I knew you were mine.
You said you were mine. I thought you were mine.
(07:45):
Do you know what? I guess you gotta get dramatic
letter that's mine. And then she burns it on the
stage and there's the fire in the trash. Kids. He's like,
I hope you burn mother. I just like I like that.
It was a TikTok. It was a TikTok thing where
(08:07):
it's like I'm erasing myself from the narratives. I put
myself back in the narratives. Right. The TikTok is so good.
It's so good, And I love like lame is like
on my own, you know, oh my god, I would
pretending yes. I always forget the beginning where it's like
nobody remembers that that's fine. But I like when it's
(08:30):
like no no, no, no no, and I can live
and sign my hod yes and then broad good. I
like a lot, only because back in the day, I
was like a madonnahead, even though it's like at the time, yeah,
he were like Madonna. As was like, let's watch it
(08:54):
wouldn't fly today. But yeah, oh my god, I think
all the time for sure, for sure, but also was
it wasn't able for a white woman too? I don't know. Yeah,
I mean, if you talk about Argentina, hold different conversation
different I'll have you got on the podcast to talk
about that. That that part the history of Argentina, whole
(09:14):
different podcasts episode on that one. I love like sad songs. Yeah,
it just it brings out a lot in your soul.
Like I really love to sing, um when I do
(09:35):
my karaoke nights every single night in my living room. Um,
Lily blow the musical. Yeah, that one was good. You
showed me that one. Yeah, that's good. Yeah, I think
it's it's when she Callahanna hits on her and she's
like take back the books and pack up the clothes,
Like it just feels so moving and like especially when
(10:00):
there's like two people, like he's singing about how he
actually wait, I waited too long to tell you I
love you? And then she's like I'm reading out there,
what do you want? What do you think? Like? Actually
for somebody like me, who I I love musicals, but
I will like I like like one or two songs
from the musical, Like, I'm not really somebody who will
go in and go and look for it. It has
mostly to do with my attention span and not necessarily
(10:21):
because I'm not like somebody's like I don't like musical,
I don't like country music. I'm like not one of
those people. I just truly just cannot pay attention to
save my life. Um, but what do you think makes
a musical? Like is a Laddin the musical is the
lion king of musical? Is like step up musical? I
(10:42):
love that, you know what I mean? Yeah, something has
to like a play with music is a play with music.
It's not really like so okay, what makes a musical
technically is there's like not dialogue, it's just song and
there's a very few dialogue and it's more song. But
a play if it has more dialogue and less song,
it's a play with music. So with music exactly. That
(11:07):
sounds like such a diss Oh my god, like you
met somebody or not, You're just to play with music, bro?
I love that. I love that. But yeah, but that's
like a musical. Musical is like when the character is
so emotionally like compelled, they have to sing their emotion,
(11:27):
you know, so like Glee is a musical too, because
like I know that was a that was a time
that you know what, I don't know what I was thinking.
I don't know what what happened there that that all
that stuff it was what was it liked? It was Glee.
(11:48):
It was Glee. Its Glee. It was like and I
think they're trying to bring back some of that also,
like they're they're still trying to bring back like musical
shows like that. I'm watching Riverdale for the first time, okay,
and they started to put in some musical aspects and
I have to skip. Even though everyone sounds good, it
gets weird. Everyone can sing. I'm just like, I don't
(12:10):
need this. It gets very weird. And they try to
put it over like a montage of the character doing something.
I'm like, now I have to watch it mute. Yeah exactly.
Verdeal is cute, though Videl had it in the beginnings moments. Yeah,
I'm like watching and I'm like, I don't know what
this is, but I am watching. I'm sitting here thinking
(12:31):
like I wanted to know about your moments of growing
into where you are now, right, Like, was there ever
a level of self doubt? Do you still deal with
different things of like moving in this world of being,
like how do I grow? How do I get into it?
And how do you continue to push forward? I think
like no matter what you do, like especially obviously in
an entertainment industry and life, I think just in life too,
(12:53):
like there's always that am I doing this right? I
think like for me, the biggest less since I've learned
have just been like a self reflection of like who
do I want to be in this industry? And like
I'm at a place where I can gratefully kind of
like say no to things and be like and it's
not for me, I'm not really digging that. I'm probably
(13:15):
like the I'm probably the most like least musical theater
person like in Broadway. I have a lot of friends
who feel this way as well, Like there's like this
like I don't want to say this, like stigma of
like musical theater people like you know what I mean
that vibe and um, I've just never been that. I've
also never been accepted like in those circles like musical
(13:36):
theater is very clicky. I feel like it's very white period.
I feel like a lot of this, there's stereotypes come
stem from like preppy white girls or I mean that's
that's like been my experience within that kind of area
of like the entertainment industry that I'm like, oh, you're
(13:57):
trying to make people who aren't that fit into those
box is and we have a lot of culture right
to fill up those boxes and just a lot of
things within ourselves, you know, that doesn't fit that right.
And like I never really like growing up and doing
musical theater. I've always had to like create space for myself.
I've never been invited into the crew. Like even growing up,
(14:21):
I was the only not only like the only brown girl,
but like the only Dominican. They were like Dominican didn't
didn't even exist. I grew up in Rockland County, um,
like north of the city. I went to school there,
so I was born in the Bronx. My family's on
the heights, so I had that like that understanding and
that exposure. But my school world was Upstate New York.
(14:45):
I don't want to say upstate because it's really forty
five minutes up north from the city, but people in
the city are like, now, that's upstate. It's like a
whole battle vibe about that. But but yeah, it was
a little further up north and up there it was
like either you were white, black or Mexican like Dominican
who like when I came speaking Spanish and class or
Spanish ap they were like So it was also weird
(15:08):
because like I never fit in with the white kids
like with the black kids. I wasn't like black with
the with the Mexicans and the Spanish, like I wasn't
like it was like always this like weird vibe. But
I was really lucky that I had so such like exposure.
I always told my mom and my dad, I'm like,
I want to do that for my kids, Like I
want them to have exposure and knowing that, like there's
(15:29):
a world beyond this town. There's a world beyond even
this state, and a world beyond this country. Like we
would travel so much. I have family in Spain, so
like we would go to Europe and we would go
to d r we would be in Egypt, we would
be in Paris. Like my family was like about traveling
that was very important. So it would be really cool
when I would be like in London or Paris and
(15:51):
I would be seeing Dominicans out there. I'm like, damn,
we'd be everywhere. I was at Amsterdam, I'm like we
out there. I'm like, okay, anywhere, want to go at
Dominican person told me that you can hear another Dominican
in the distance, like you always can hear them, like
laughing or the music or an instruments or something. Who
wasn't They were like, I went traveling and I heard
like I think they heard like a like a drum
(16:12):
and a cow bell or something, and then sure enough
they found the person. They were like it was dominic
another Dominican. I'm like, oh my god, that's such a
great story to know that the music will always lead
you to your people sidebar I grew up in Hollywood,
and I only predominantly grew up with the children of immigrants,
so we were all like first I always forget it's
(16:32):
like first generation or a second generation um, and but
like um, everybody had stinky food at home and a
mother that was yelling at them in a different language.
And so when I got older and was kind of
exposed to like American culture, like people who were more Americanized,
that was a huge culture shock to me. So like
even talking about musical theater, right, Like I remember I
would go to school and kids that were into that.
(16:54):
To me, it was always like oh wow, god and like,
oh my god, I love that song that they would
start saying, and then they would quote something else like
show and you would be living like I don't know
any of these songs. I know, like, um, I know
a song I know like, but I didn't know how
to like hop in and so there always was I
think maybe that's why too. And I think also to
(17:17):
growing up my family was a little bit more like
hood adjacent, and things like music goals or anything that
was like was like didn't have enough street cred, right,
And I feel like which is why I think things
like Hamilton's have kind of kind of blown musicals into
a different space because they made it because they were
(17:39):
more people of color involved in these projects. They made
it more accessible to I think, communities of color to
see themselves and something that is often seen as like
a white industry. And I don't know much, but I
was speaking from my own experience of why I felt
like I could never relate or understand it in a sense,
you know, yeah, yeah, And that was like literally what
(18:00):
I felt growing up, it was always like and I
think a lot of us in Hamilton's have experienced this,
a lot of um u s pocs like in Hamilton's,
like we've always been like the token, right, like the one,
one or two round people in that white show, right
in that white musical theater show. So to like that's
why Hamilton's was so special because growing up I was
(18:21):
like great, Like I was in Andy Get Your Gun?
They handled Dominicans out there and get your Like what
are we doing out there with out there with a gun? Like, hey, okay,
you know I would see that show. I would see
it same, hire me Cassimi, let's do it. Um. Can
you imagine a Dominican version of Andy Get Your Gun? Um? Yeah,
(18:42):
I love that of course, Like the job is too.
As I learned growing like when I was younger, it
was like, it doesn't matter the skin tone. It just
matters like the storytelling. And that's always something that I've
always reminded myself. But I think that the industry doesn't
see that. Obviously, that's not that's not the realistic way.
So when Hamilton's around, it was like, oh my god, wait,
I can be brown and like play these people, Okay,
(19:04):
this is cool, Like finally I can play something that
speaks about storytelling and not about my skin. Like I
don't have to be in dream Girls seven times a year.
I don't have to be in like The Lion King,
you know, for years and years, because that's the only
show that I can kind of work on and feel, um,
feel connected to, you know, and things along those lines,
(19:24):
like now we have a Medicano, right, we have. We're
seeing all of these new works more recently where now
I'm seeing myself in it. I mean the show I
was just in it was called dream House. It's a
new play by Eleana Pipes, a fellow oft for Latina,
and she um wrote this play about these two latin
X sisters who their mom passes away and they have
(19:45):
to go through like selling their mother's house, um and
also deal with like gentrification, right, racism, colorism, and like
all of these layers of things. Um. And that was
the first time I ever played Latina. So I've been
in this industry for like fifteen sixteen years, and the
first time I've ever played a Latina is now in
my life, which is what does that do for your spirit?
(20:09):
What does that do for you. I mean it makes
it makes my life easier coming to work, Like I
can kind of be myself. I don't have to like period,
Like I don't have to be like, Okay, now I'm
playing this like who am I? How can I connect?
Like it's second nature. I'm playing myself. I'm playing Latina.
I don't have to like I don't have to be
(20:30):
colde switching. I don't have to like fall into a
certain pocket of something like I can just literally be
myself and come to work and do that. Like, of course,
I know the job is acting and we have to act,
but like sometimes it's nice to be like I connect
with this character so much, there's so much of me
in it. Yeah, you can focus on other aspects of
(20:51):
the character rather than like how you know, Nicole Kidman
can wake up and just be like, well, I'm going
to play Nicole Kidman again. This time it's in medieval times,
but you know, act like yeah, exactly, they get to
do it. Why can't we exactly? I mean we were
just talking about how like like people like content formed
by people of color is often you know, people want
(21:12):
to see like the trauma, like the drama and the
trauma and We're not allowed to just be quirky and
exists and be like I'm just the yeah just happened
to be, you know, Like like why does it always
have to be like an all Latino Latino cast who
one person's Mexican and talking about there's certain issues the
other persons this. It's like, can we just like yes,
(21:34):
have those issues, but also in the same thing, like
love musicals too, or like love something that isn't very
much like I don't know, you know, we don't have
to throw chunkolates all day and like eat tacos or whatever,
like that's not you're like sometimes I like going to
like get like a harvest bowl from down the street,
(21:55):
like and that's okay, Like we get different, sir, all
depending on the day. Can I quick side pivot super fast?
Only because I forgot that I crept on your Instagram
before um and I saw the pictures of you and
(22:17):
your fiance and I remember saying like, oh my god,
they are gorgeous together, like there's so like you guys
are such a cute couple, And so I forgot until
I just went on your stcaram again right now, and
I was like, oh ship, yeah, y'all are hot. How
did you? How long have you all been together for? Thanks?
He's really cute, just about so cute. Literally, I was like,
(22:39):
oh my god, we've been together for so it's been
like two years and like a month, uh huh, this
is my two years and this is my favorite photo.
By the way, look this is what I want. Lord.
(23:01):
He's literally okay. So for those of you listening, go
um check out Darylyn Melody's instagram and it is a
photo where I believe he's like the captures and I
was like, why are you so obsessed with me? It's
a Valentine's Day post and your fiance is attempting to
lick your face and there's a photo of you just
like It's like, it's a chaotic photo. Squills. I want it.
(23:26):
I'm manifesting it, visualizing. And we met on Hinge. You guys,
shout out to Hinge. Don't tell me that we're ready
for the commercial. We're ready for the testimonial. Shout out
to Hinge. Wow. But when it's meant to be, it's
meant to be. I want to pause for a second
to go into our astrology section. Yes, I love love,
(23:47):
I love that love story though, So in this astrology section,
I definitely want to get into like what you've learned
maybe about his sign and compared to like yours, just
(24:10):
just what you're feeling. You don't have to know like
a lot. I don't can tell you. We can fill
in the gap, okay, because I just know, like I
know Libra, like we're about balance, like we also just
want everybody to be happy. I don't know, like he's
a Leo, but like every time I read about Leo's
he's like he's such a teddy bear. He's not like
(24:30):
like you would imagine scratch, like okay, okay, so okay,
So that means he's like a lion and he is
laying on his bat and he's like rip my belly. Yeah,
that's definitely him. But then like when it's time to
like he's very protective. He does have like that that
(24:51):
man of the house. He's Colombian too, so I'll just
shut that out. He's so and I don't know what
it is like the Colombians to like they remind me
of Dominicans too. Like when I first said him, I
was like, you're not Dominican. He's like no, no, no, Columbian.
I was like, okay, he was Dominican. I don't know
what that's about, but like even his family, I'm like, yeah,
(25:11):
sure Dominican. Yeah, I love that marine. He's merinding my
dad's marine and my brother in law's a marine. Um,
there's something about marines where like uh, Like I always
saw a story that I was in the car with
my dad and there was a man coming up to
our car and I was like, funk, locked the doors
like I'm was scared, but it literally started to take
(25:31):
off his belt, his seatbelt, like written, well, I guess
I gotta handle like no fear, no nothing like, so
I can understand how you're a man. Also probably walking
around the house like I'm a fucking marine. I don't
I don't care, you know, I will say, though, like
I'm the more calm he's he's the one that gets
more anxious about things. I deal with anxiety like a
different kind of way where I'm like, Okay, the world's
(25:53):
on fire, like that's cool, that's me, that's me. Do
you do you know you're your big three? No? Is
that like my rising and all that stuff? You're rising?
But I can tell you when I was born and
like what time, and you can find it, okay on
your co star. I never oh yeah, okay, I never
(26:14):
look at that thing. I'm so bad open your co
star because I think it'll tell you fetching NASA data. Okay.
So I'm a son in Libra, a moon and virgo
and ascento. That's literally why I was looking at you,
(26:34):
being like, why don't we like her so much? Like, oh, Doug,
because you're virgo, you're double virgo? What is that your
virgo double lammy? What is it? What does that mean?
What is it? Like? What is that so curly? Is
a virgo virgo double scorpio. I'm a I'm a double
aries rising pisces. Oh you're a double aries rising piece.
(26:57):
I don't know what that rising and all that, but
I know the aries. A lot of my friends are
aries pisces. We get along very well. Also so and virgos,
and meet all the virgos. I get along with as well.
Gemini is like the one that's like a funky one
for me. I like Gemini's Capricorns are the ones that
are funky for me, even though I get along with
them really well. I always have to be like, why
are every time I'm with the Capricornia. You know, you
(27:18):
don't have to say it like that, right, you don't know,
you don't have to come up with somebody and tell
them he's not into you. You can be like, you know,
there are other options in the world. The capricornis is
going a little heavy. Um, but maya like tell Dylen
like what like her? Like you say it better than
I do. But like the moon and the rising, well,
so yeah, you're rising is like how you present to
(27:41):
the world. It's actually the closest like when you're reading
your horoscope, you should read honestly all of the signs
in your big three, but most importantly you're rising also
because it's like a snapshot of what the stars were
at the moment, the exact moment you were born. That
makes sense. Yeah, So like you're rising is like how
(28:02):
you show up. Your son is like the foundation. So
if I'm thinking of your chart, like your foundation is
Libra balance, it's an air sign. It's very logical, and
then your moon and you're rising is Virgo, which means
like you have to have all your ducks in a
row before, like no one's getting past these walls. Basically,
(28:26):
you're very very fair on these things because of the
receipts and stuff. I think Virgo energy is very much
like there are certain things that we're kind of known
to also be like the air the most airy earth sign,
like you know, we're kind of a little bit more
like yeah, whatever, and then we'll turn around and be
the way that you mentioned anxiety, how you're like you
(28:47):
just the world is ending, and then it's very Virgo.
But then you'll turn around and be like, I'm going
to go fix my like spoons and make sure that
they're all in order. Like there's literally my energy is
just like um, you know, I there's some things that
I just can't handle. But the things that I can
is like the towels in my closet and how they
need to be folded all the same way and all
(29:09):
these things. It's like, if there's not a legitimate reason
to freak out, then you're not going to freak out.
I'm just fil signs, yeah exactly. Fire signs are like
it's built, it's built, spilled and then you spill it
some more, you spill it some more and you're like,
I spilled it again. That is so on this Oh
my god, that is so him where I'm literally like
(29:30):
it's going to be fine. Who's the messy one between
you two? Who leaves their shoes in the hallway, who
leaves like their twenties on the floor and doesn't fold them? More?
Like are you both like you know, Nate Burkas used
to come on Oprah and be like everything has a place,
and that's very much how I live, And everything has
a place. Put it back, I will say, I think
on this, I have to give it to him. I
think he's less messy. I think I'm more messy, but
(29:53):
I think it's because of his marine training too. Are
they like that? Okay? But he also like he's very
like parts, Like all his shirts are folded in a
certain way, they're like ordered. But I also have like
my closets like color coded. But like but if I
go to the like you know, I'll leave like my
(30:13):
dirty clothes like okay, but then I'll go pick it
up like two hours later, you know what I mean?
Like balance, that's so funny. I literally, like literally I
wouldn't stop dating people because if I'm like, oh, is
that where they leave their shoes? Oh my god? Said,
oh my god. Nobody mentioned say that, but I once
sun upon, once upon a time, I went to someone's
house and people forget to lift up the toilet seat,
(30:34):
like people hate debt that there is splashback like and
if you don't lift up your toilet seat and clean underneath,
like I think that's telling of how you live and
who you are as a person. Um like forget to
forget your moon sign and your sun sign. Show me
the underside of your toilet seat. It wasn't me. It
wasn't me. So my mom used to make a clean
the house, the toothbrush, get all the corners. When I
(30:55):
moved in, I was like cleaning the windows. I like
backing the steps and come to let your virgo And
he was like, what are you doing? And I'm like cleaning.
