Khalil Rawntree Junior, My man, thanks for tapping checking in
with me, guys. Calil Rawntrey challenges for the belt this WEEKND.
How's everything going, man? How long you've been here?

Speaker 3 (01:57):
Good?

Speaker 4 (01:58):
We've been here like almost ten days something like that. Yeah,
team and I parked up in Park City and we've
been up there ever since.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Man, how's the acclamation process going?

Speaker 3 (02:07):
I feel good? Yeah? I feel good.

Speaker 4 (02:08):
These the first day, you know, we hit it hard,
got acclimated.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
Everything's good.

Speaker 4 (02:15):
I feel even being down here in Salt Lake is like,
is really it's different?

Speaker 3 (02:19):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Man, you can feel the difference.

Speaker 4 (02:21):
I can feel the difference from being up at seven
thousand to being down here around like forty five for sure.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Yeah. How how quick was this a decision you made
alone or was this your whole team going? We got
to get up there early, opposed to some people just
don't respect the altitude change. It happened to Behovich here.
First Ronnie felt well against Alex and then got tired
couldn't really manage his cardio because of the difference. Did

(02:46):
you know that who made this decision?

Speaker 4 (02:49):
I'd say mostly my coach Lorenzo is the one that
really kind of like had the everything dialed in, the
and the science dialed in. I think everybody that's been
up here knows that it does make a difference, you know,
like the altitude definitely does make a difference. Uh So
collectively we agreed, but I left the to Lorenzo to
kind of schedule what days, how long, and how we

(03:10):
were gonna like properly acclimate. We didn't just come out
here and start running, you know what I mean. We
slowly went into it so that there were no problems.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
So have you Uh, you've gotten so much better at fighting. Right,
there's been noticeable changes very quickly. But has the golf
game improved at all? Because you're trash. It looks good,
it looks good, seems like there's a difference. Right, you

(03:39):
walk up there and when you do it, it looks good.
Mine looks bad, but it's functional.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
You're right, have you got I.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
Mean, have you improved?

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Look?

Speaker 4 (03:47):
Man, what I can say is that I have not improved.
Here's here's why. Uh, the moment I got the call
that I was fighting for a title, everything else dropped.
Everything dropped, everything dropped. I've been I've been locked in
on this. I'm missing golf a lot. But uh, yeah, man,
I can only imagine that. It's it's gonna take me

(04:07):
a while to get the wheels turning again.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
I can't. I'm gonna take you out there when I
go back to Vegas, I'm taking and I'm gonna I'm
gonna crush you my goal.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
I'm not gonna like make you play.

Speaker 1 (04:16):
I'm not gonna play it close to you. I'm gonna
try to smash it.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
Hold on.

Speaker 4 (04:19):
Here's the thing, though, when when we played you were
already warm.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
I came straight out of there, right out of the car.
I didn't even take any practice swings. We just went
right at it.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
And you had like some some like real classy shoes.

Speaker 4 (04:30):
Yeah, I had on my old man shoes, my loafers on.
I wasn't even fully comfortable yet. So I think, like
for you to call me trash, no clue, bro, I
think it's because you, like you got me in the
warm up stage.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Little brother. Let me say, so, there's a good bad
and then.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
I can't let you call me trash. I can't we
call you playing golf. I cannot let you call me
trash man.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
So you get the call, and I got this notice
said that you were having a bad day when you
got the call.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
Yeah, what was going on?

Speaker 4 (05:03):
I was just dealing with like legal stuff, man, with
all this you know, this supplement stuff, and just trying
to you know, to deal with this company and try
to figure out something because.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
It wasn't my fault.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
Man.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
Yeah, So that was a pain in the ass. It
was a headache. I was in the midst of all
of that.

Speaker 4 (05:20):
We took a short break in the day and literally
during that break, I got the phone call and so
like I was ready to run through a wall at
that point because we were not we were not you know,
seeing eye to eye.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
Yeah, and I didn't know what else to do you
and the company, you mean yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
And then so it went from being like like oh man,
we're missing each other to your fight for the belt.

Speaker 3 (05:41):
Yeah, dude, like yeah, like it's crazy.

Speaker 4 (05:44):
It was crazy, like literally like like that, we took
a break, the mediator left the room, my wife left
the room to go to the restroom. My phone ring,
It's the UFC. How's your day going? I was like,
not good? What's going on? Like, let's get this out
of the way.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
And you probably told it was a called up for
it to be piled.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
On, you know what I mean? Like I just didn't
know what it was.

Speaker 4 (06:04):
And then they're like, uh, well, I hope your day
is going to get better now you're fighting Alex October
fifth in Salt Lake City.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
For the belt and crazy how stuff fork?

Speaker 3 (06:12):
Like literally immediately.

Speaker 1 (06:14):
You know that when you got the fight, so many
thought it would be on calive right. We always ask
you guys when you go on a win streak, especially
in fighter, means, hey, Khalil, are you paying attention to
the division. How quickly do you think you can earn
a title fight? How is this reality compared to what
you thought it would take to be fighting for a championship?

(06:38):
How far away did you think you were from being
where you are today.

Speaker 4 (06:42):
I thought that had I still fought at UFC three
oh three, that a win at three oh three would
have put me either next or one more So, I
didn't think that I was further than two away from
a title fight.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
So because a lot of people were on the world
just acts so surprised.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Yeah, but why I have no idea. Yeah, but when I.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
Started looking at your stummoach, well he's won five in
a row, most of them by finished. Why are the surprised?

Speaker 3 (07:12):
You know, I don't know, man, I'm not really sure.

Speaker 4 (07:16):
I understand that they're like they're people who maybe aren't fans.

Speaker 3 (07:19):
Of me, stuff like that. All that's understood.

Speaker 4 (07:22):
But when you look at, yeah, the last five fights
and the way that they've happened, and you can't sleep
on the opponents either, you know what I mean? Like
Anthony Smith, Yeah, short notice, but the guy's a legend.
He's been in there with the best of the best.
Chris Dawkins was a ranked heavyweight, you know, like Jacoby kickboxer,
the same thing that they were all like like decent guys.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
You know what I mean.

Speaker 4 (07:42):
It's not like I went in there and went in
decision with all these guys so besides one. So I
mean for people to be surprised, I mean, that's up
to them. But I think that, you know, the UFC
made the right choice.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
When you hit Anthony Smid, you did some crazy shit
with your hands. What was that, man?

Speaker 3 (07:56):
When you're all.

Speaker 4 (07:58):
Well, I think like instinctively, dude, like I don't know,
for for some reason, a lot of times when I
see guys going down a hammer face, you know, like
Go Konsaki, Chris Dacas, you know, Paul Craig. So it's
just one of those things where like I just immediately
want to like.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
I'm gonna let you say, I'm gonna let him live. Well, yeah,
because you stop you Like I was like, oh my god,
because Anthony's like, yeah he was done.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (08:20):
But Anthony's also one of those guys where like sometimes
he looks done, you know.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (08:24):
I hit him the first round, second round, third round,
every round I hit him with something, and he was
like a little bit wobbly, but I had to play it,
you know, play it smart and yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
So you start preparing for Alex Perrera. Yea, what is
because right now, right he's considered the Billeyman. Yeah, everybody's
knocking everybody out and this is gonna be this, It's
gonna be this. You start preparing for Perreira. What does
that process look like when starting to prepare for a
guy that at your best skill striking, he's the best

(08:55):
in the world at it, or at least he was
when he was kickboxing. What's the process when you start
to build a game plan for this guy?

Speaker 4 (09:01):
Well, I mean, I'd say the biggest thing that's helped
the process has been positivity. Like my coaches, everybody just
we're positive, we're appreciative about this moment. And now there's
been like heavy accountability to all of my coaches, you know,
have been making sure that everything looks precise, you know,
that everything looks professional, that everything looks sharp, that my

(09:24):
speed's there, that my vision's there, that the game plan
is is everything's according to plan. So we like really
collectively came together and like made sure that like everything
is like dialed in and so I don't know if
we've ever been this prepared for a fight before. So
I'm very excited to go out there and you know,

(09:44):
and put and show what it looks like when you know,
when the roundtri camp is like everybody's working together and
you know and doing our homework.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
You know, sometimes sometimes the air coors came, don't you
hear that?

Speaker 3 (10:01):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (10:01):
Sometimes when we talk about Perrera, me and chill Son,
and we're trying to describe him, He's a guy that
has what twelve fights, and we say, well, this guy
might like he's an amateur fighter. He hasn't really everything
he's learned has been on the job. Can you look
at that and go, well, some point that inexperience has
to show itself, and do you have things that you

(10:22):
know you can take advantage of. When you think that
inexperience in mixed martial arts starts to show itself.

Speaker 3 (10:30):
You know, it's crazy.

Speaker 4 (10:32):
I it's hard to say, man, we haven't really like
the approach hasn't really been to like take advantage of anything,
you know. I think that's been what a lot of
people have tried. They see things and like we're going
to take advantage of this and then it just doesn't work.
It's really just been about like making sure that I
step in there and do what I know how to

(10:54):
do and just be the best version of myself and
see how that matches up. You know, Like we're not
really focus too much on, you know, capitalizing on all
these mistakes and he makes or whatever. Man, It's it's
really just about like I've been working my ass up
to get here, and I'm fully prepared and like, let's
do it.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
Let's go ahead ahead, all right, guys.

Speaker 1 (11:13):
So it's October and the weather starting to cool, and

(12:17):
my promo code DCTV for twenty dollars off of your
first purchase. Hey, this is the best time of the
year to go and do something fun. Why not save
money while doing it? Let's go tomorrow sman publicly, I
got the little Roundtree's chill sonning things that you're gonna
knock him out in no time because he believes that
the world is thinking that this fight is not as

(12:39):
hard for him as it's going to be, and when
it does become harder, it'll be a little bit surprising
to him. When you hear people like this throwing their
support behind you, how does that make you feel?

Speaker 4 (12:50):
I mean, it's nice, you know, it's definitely nice. I
think that, like it's cool to have these type of
guys who see something in me where like there's a
self belief or there's a sense of belief. Guys like
you know, chel Sonan who's been in the game a
long time, Guys like Kamara Husman, who's an amazing champion.

Speaker 3 (13:09):
I mean, I appreciate those things.

Speaker 4 (13:12):
Guys that look at this and think that it's gonna
be an easy fight for him. It's almost like disrespectful,
Like what do you not see in me?

Speaker 3 (13:20):
You know what I mean? Like what am I not doing?

Speaker 4 (13:24):
Is it because you see me in interviews and I'm
myself and I'm a nice guy, that you think that
this guy who's stone cold is gonna stone me. No,
I don't know, but you know, I think that it's
gonna be nice to go in here and do this
and get some respect on my name for that.

Speaker 1 (13:37):
That's you, right, that's you. But the weirdest thing about
Perera and dealing with Perera, people start to act like
not themselves. So when he was walking to the octagon,
Jamal Hills like reaching over the case and come right,
He's like he's like very animated ur per Hosk is
just doing all kind of weird shit. You're doing all
kind of crazy shit up in there. He's doing this,

(13:57):
He's doing your is just not acting like it's oh right.
Do you envision that moment when he's making that walk
with his music and is in the way it sounds
and the how you stay with Khalil, I don't act
like someone that needs to put on the show because
he's bringing a show on his walk.

Speaker 3 (14:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (14:16):
I imagine myself, man, I'm I'm fully committed to being
myself until the day I lay those gloves in the
middle of the octagon.

Speaker 3 (14:24):
You know, I think the show is the show.

Speaker 4 (14:26):
I think that anytime people watch UFC, they're going to
be entertained, regardless for me to try to like add
some sort of entertainment or theatrics and stuff like people.
You know, UFC as real as it gets, you know,
So that's my job too. I gotta go in there.
I gotta be real. I gotta be myself. So that's
my plan.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
Did you notice that though? Did you notice Jamal and
like every time they're in there. I don't understand why
they try to change so much. You just gotta be yourself, yea,
because if you start fighting, if you fight him at
his game, or start over fighting or reaching and trying
to create things that don't there that's why you find
yourself in trouble.

Speaker 3 (15:02):
I've seen it, and you know I've clocked that, and
you know.

Speaker 4 (15:05):
I've tried to remind myself almost every day to just
remain myself, man, Like, that's what got me here and
that's how I want.

Speaker 1 (15:12):
To keep it. So the other day you went to
the APEX and you saw yourself on the poster for
the first time, and your reaction was it was awesome, man,
because I remember the first time I saw it, right,
But then you fall in love with it. I don't
want to go back to not being on the right,
like you really do. Like I don't want to go
back to not being on the building.

Speaker 3 (15:29):
Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (15:30):
Have you allowed yourself to think about what it's going
to feel like whenever you're standing in the octagon in
the main event of a pay per view fighting for
the UFC Light everyeight Championship.

Speaker 3 (15:38):
Yeah, I have imagined it.

Speaker 4 (15:41):
I imagined that many nights in bed before sleep, and
I feel my heart racing and I feel my heart
in my throat.

Speaker 3 (15:49):
Man, whatever that was.

Speaker 1 (15:52):
The light just went down with two brothers out here,
and you dark too here like youth like they badly
can see me.

Speaker 3 (16:01):
So please donna hit me.

Speaker 1 (16:03):
That would literally be like my worst nightmare for nobody
to hit me at this point life.

Speaker 4 (16:09):
But yeah, man, I think about it. I thought about
it multiple times. It makes my heart race, but in
the best way possible. I mean, it's it's cool to
be in this position. I'm glad it's against a guy
like him, who everybody is, you know, the Boogeyman and
all this. This is a bigger challenge for me. We're
at the top of the mountain altitude. There's so many different,

(16:30):
you know, challenges, and no matter what, this is making
me grow as a person as a man.

Speaker 1 (16:36):
Yeah, John Wood told me. I interviewed John Wood last
week and we spoke about your journey, and he said,
there was a point where you were like, I'm done
with this. Yeah, when you look back on that to
see where you are today, like, wow, you've come a
really long way.

Speaker 4 (16:49):
Yeah, dude, I think there were multiple times where I
felt like I was done with this. But what it
was is I was kind of running from hard work.
You know, I was almost I was young. I I
got into the UFC really early, and I just I
don't think that I think I was scared of the
real commitment that it takes to get to where I'm

(17:09):
at today. And then so when I came back and
I asked my coaches personally, you know, hold me accountable,
like I do want to become a champion. I do
want to get there, and everybody's held up there into
the bargain. You know, nobody's let me slip.

Speaker 1 (17:22):
I remember when you first came back from Thailand and
me and Joe Rogan call in your fight. We're like,
who the fuck is this? You remember that fight? Who
are you fighting against?

Speaker 3 (17:31):
Guys?

Speaker 1 (17:31):
L Oh my god? I remember that. You just look
but it's it's constantly been progression. Okay, what is what
is your what is your gear? I'm looking at it.

Speaker 4 (17:41):
Yeah, it's like yeah, so this is like this is
my my latest uh like fight camp collection with Santo Studio,
a new company that I've you know that I'm with
power to the people, uh for me, man, I think
that like I want people to watch this flight to
be empowered. You know, I want the people who've connected

(18:01):
with my story, uh, to just be empowered. You know,
we got me, you got Polton two of you know,
the strongest is the hardest hitting people. He I feel
like does a decent job of being a champion. I
feel like he has in his heart to you know,
give back to his community and and and help his people.
I have definitely like similar you know, hopes and dreams

(18:23):
in mind. So I just, yeah, I rocket to so
that the people can feel empowered when you know, when
they watched his fight or when they see me.

Speaker 1 (18:30):
For sure, it's stylish. Yeah, you're a stylish guy. Yeah,
when you wore them shoes, that the golf simulator you
like that?

Speaker 3 (18:38):
Yeah, bro, the loafers, this is crazy, the loafers. Sometimes
sometimes you gotta add like a little touch of like.

Speaker 1 (18:49):
Flare, Like remember when Farro started wearing that stupid hate
you ever wear one of those hats? No, please don't.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
Yeah, I'm not.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
You look like a stylish dude. You don't walk around
Los Angeles one night.

Speaker 3 (19:00):
I can't where the elmer.

Speaker 1 (19:01):
All right, let me ask you a question. Bredo Komodo
told me that you and I Russell, I had no idea.
You probably beat the ship out of me, so I
started rustling you.

Speaker 3 (19:09):
Fuck me up? No me, my brother's here.

Speaker 1 (19:12):
He was probably only because of wrestler.

Speaker 3 (19:14):
You probably hit me.

Speaker 4 (19:15):
So I was like, I new I remember the only
thing I knew how to do at the time because
I was still big.

Speaker 1 (19:19):
I was like maybe two eighty okay, and.

Speaker 4 (19:22):
You were coming in around the scene. You were thinking about,
like you were making your transition about to fight. And
Strike Force came to vanderlaz to train.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
I remember that I was there with Kaye Alaska and.

Speaker 4 (19:32):
I was swinging and I hit you with some stuff
and you picked me up and you slammed me and
you were all over me, and I remember after that,
I think we did two rounds. After that, I was
like super emotional, and my boxing coach came over. He
wrote your name on a piece of paper. He put
it in my shat. He said go home and watch
that on YouTube. And I typed your name and I
was like, okay, that's what.

Speaker 1 (19:53):
The word scared as I was probably scared of ship.

Speaker 3 (19:58):
You slammed me, bro.

Speaker 4 (19:59):
It was like, and I I haven't even I didn't
I did. I didn't even have an amateur fight yet.
Like I really, I was only maybe like a month
or two months in to training crazy. I didn't even
know what I was doing yet. I just was We
were sparring and I was swinging.

Speaker 3 (20:12):
Boom I must have hit you and hit me.

Speaker 1 (20:14):
Yeah, that's a route.

Speaker 4 (20:15):
And then I was just I was crushed because I
was like, da have I never been slammed like that
in my life?

Speaker 1 (20:19):
To be honest, I was. Probably I did. I stopped
being like scared somebody bunching me probably like twenty fourteen.
I was already in the UFC. It was the first
time I was not scared to I just went and
grab somebody's leg. But you ain't that kid, no more. No,
you about to fight for the UFC Championship. You've done
a great job man. Congratulations of good luck this weekend, guys,

(20:39):
Khalil Roalntree Junior takes on Alex Pulltown Peride this weekend

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
