Speaker 3 (00:32):
Gladiators listening, We have the one and only Melaura Harden
on the pod today. I oh, my gosh, this is
I'm such an office fan. I am such a fan
of you. I don't even understand what's happening right now.
Speaker 4 (00:51):
Did you get to watch the episode, Malaura?
Speaker 2 (00:53):
I did watch it? Yeah? Wow?
Speaker 4 (00:56):
Crazy? How long ago did we shoot that?
Speaker 2 (00:58):
I was trying to figure that out. I didn't remember
when the year. I was gonna actually look, but I
just haven't had the time to see what you hold on.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
I'm going to tell you, guys right now. Let me
tell you this is aired. We are talking today, my
friends about episode three oh four, entitled Say Hello to
My Little Friend, aired on October twenty fourth, twenty thirteen.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
And it was written by Mark Fish, who we love,
and directed by Oliver Bolckelberg, who was also our EP
on the show.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
It was directed by Oliver. And then, really quick, while
we're here, we're going to take our guests real quick,
Malaura through what happened in the episode. So we're all
on the same page and then I have one thousand
questions for you. So it was guest starring Patrick Fabian Is,
Senator Richard Myers, Mowlaura Harden as Shelley Myers.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
And Michael B. Silver as Gavin Mitchell.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
And to just update our gladiators and all of us
on what the hell happened? Synopsis and scandalpace with popen
associates still struggling to find clients, the team decides to
take on a philandering senator who hasn't stopped his ways
despite being charged with murder.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
Meanwhile, Melly slips up by spinning some shade on live microphone,
and Quinn learns more about what's bothering howk and Fit
starts poking into things that he shouldn't.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
That's one way, now, Like where do we start?
Speaker 4 (02:14):
There's so much to unpack here, Gasted.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Also, are you drinking wine? And what's in your office?
Behind you? Tell me everything? And what is this lip color?
Speaker 4 (02:24):
I'm questions?
Speaker 2 (02:27):
I'm having Waterloo the Lime version Lemon Lime very good?
And behind me is are these fictitious posters from this
one woman movie that I star in called Golden Vanity,
which is playing in Los Angeles for just another six
days including today.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
Wait, Melaura, all of these posters behind you, which to
the viewer, to the audience, doesn't it looks like these
are all shows you've been old Broadway shows, way off Broadway,
regional plays. That is not true. That is not that.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
No, they're actually set decor from this movie that I
play a Mabel Montgomery Mayflower, who is a fading, fading
movie star ala Judy Garland Elizabeth Taylor. Yeah, said in
nineteen sixty seven. And these are all of the movies
that she starred, and The Magician's Assistant and Equestrian Request
and Bookworm and All's Fair in the World's Fair, and
(03:24):
they go on and on. But she's sort of a
fictitious movie star that barricades herself in her mansion and
decides that she needs to record her life story to
finally set the record straight. So it's very funny, it's dark,
it's tragic, but it's a really great indie movie. Was
made for one hundred and fifty thousand dollars you guys,
oh wow, or monetarily. We don't yet have a distributor,
(03:47):
but we have something to get one interested. Yeah, it's
pretty great, I have to say so. Anybody that's a
fan of mine, or if I've done anything to make
anyone happy or make them laugh, make me happy and
come and.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
Show see this movie. And you said, I want all
those posters to put them up in my house. I
love it. You said, I want everyone.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
Did you just go up to the art department and
you were like, I will take all of those.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
What's really fun about it is that my husband. So
it's like Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland did all those
movies together. So basically, this fictitious movie star, Mabel Montgomery Mayflower,
she did all of her movies with a guy named
Jimbo Layson. And so actually they used my real husband's
face to be had to have it, like that's really
(04:34):
you know, to have it.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Yeah, And this artist that did it was just that
one is from a real picture from actually going to
Jason Rightman's Halloween party one year. We dressed like that
and that was a real picture. Oh my god, it
was too too much.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
Like us to be yoh no, too perfect tonight. And
let me tell you something, it is a sick backdrop
for whether you're at a Zoom meeting, you're on a
time all with your family. It is very good.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
It works, it works good.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Do you remember in twenty thirteen where you were when
this scandal situation came into your life.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
In twenty thirteen, That means that my eldest daughter, Rory
was twelve and my youngest daughter, Piper was eight. That's
weird question in university, So that's weird. I was like
being a mom and I was working on the office
and I was doing yeah, like doing all that.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
Was it a straight up offer? Melaura? Did they like
call your peeps and were like, we wanted to play
this role?
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Yes you did, Yes, yes, of course, And hey you
had you ever seen scandal before? Or were you so
busy in the mom world and working on the office
and things that you were like, yeah, great, sounds good.
I would love to do it whatever, Or did you
know someone involved? Had you worked with Carry or Patrick
Fabian before anything like that?
Speaker 2 (06:03):
Tom Verica and I were friends. Maybe I'd seen an episode,
but I really hadn't seen much. I don't watch ATV.
We turned our TV off twenty two years ago and
we never turned it back on.
Speaker 4 (06:14):
I love that.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
So if I don't even have a television in my house,
our television is in the guest house.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
Are you kidding? I am addicted, Melaura. I can't stop.
Please help me. What do I do? Are you like
an avid reader or are you like what? How do
you find yourself like spending time without a television? What
do you do? What do you love to do?
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Grama watches a lot of horror movies. We have something
on this podcast called six Degrees of Horror where, yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
Oh, I have a couple of I saw last night,
I hunkered down, Malaura and watched two of your horror
movies horror. I traumatized by Caged But we'll get to that.
Oh my god, but I digress. So wait, how do
you find you're in your housbod? How do you find
yourselves spending time like without a television?
Speaker 2 (07:05):
I'm an artist too, and I spend a lot of
time making my collage art and petting my dog and yeah,
you know, cooking and cleaning up and like organizing the
house and calling friends, talking to friends.
Speaker 3 (07:19):
Are you ever in a position where people are talking
about the hottest, bestest show that's changed everyone, like a
Game of Thrones moment that eighteen million people are watching
at the same time. Do you feel fomo or you
feel joemo. And for those listening, that's fear of missing
out versus joy of missing out.
Speaker 4 (07:35):
I've never heard of Jomo Katie Joy mad.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
I probably did it, but it's for today.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
I did. Yeah, I figure I'll get any information I
really need from everybody else. I can just nod my
head and if I really need to get into an
engaged conversation about something, I'll watch it, or I'll watch
an episode or all. Like. It's not that I don't
watch things I do, it's just weirdly, there was a
(08:04):
time when I really did miss it. Stopping drinking Coca cola.
There was a time I drank a Coca cola every
day at lunch when I was growing up.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
My dad had a Coca Cola.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
I haven't had a Coca cola in probably twenty five years,
maybe thirty years.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
You're inside, you're so clean. I just saw that coke
is the worst. Yeah, it's worse Coca cola.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
It really was the thing that quenched my thirst more
than anything else. But I had a doctor tell me like,
just don't drink it. I had a little scared. I
was like, okay, I'm justad it's best so I just did,
and now I would never drink it. It's the same
with TV. I'm just goode.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
I'll tell you, yeah, looking at you and how stunning
you are your two children being like full on grown ups.
I have a three year old and a six year old.
I'm like about to march out of this podcast and
throw out all the Coca cola and the televisions with
it if I want a prayer in hell of being
like Melaura Harden, we listeners are going to take you
(09:05):
through all of our standards. We've got six degrees of
horror with g We've got the fashion moments. We've got
like the hottest Kerry Washington acting moments of the episode,
the best Shonda Rhime's moments of the episode. This episode
is famous in my impact. It's famous in my heart
because it's the dick pic episode.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
Guys.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
Yes, I love that one shot with the probably wasn't
Patrick but wearing the white whitey tidy tidy and I
was wondering the full erection underneath his under his tidy whities.
I'm like, oh my god, wait a minute, isn't this
night time television on a major network. I don't get it.
Speaker 4 (09:45):
Yeah, the things we got away with on Scandal. It's crazy,
but I wondered the same thing. It's probably not.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
But it's this number. I could probably text him and
ask him.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
Text him right now and tell to send you that picture.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Good.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
I want to know, like everything about this episode just
rocked me because it was at the time, and correct
me if I'm wrong. This was the whole time that Wiener,
the Anthony Wiener. This is one of the amazing Scandal
episodes that we got to do where the main a
storyline is completely ripped from the actual news. This is
(10:22):
not made up. There is a high profile Anthony Wiener
politician who literally couldn't stop sending like dig and I
was on the edge of my seat. And of course
for me, I want to hear about your favorite moments, Malaura.
Did you have any highlights of the episode that struck.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
For you very much like the picture of the tidy whities? Yeah, same,
just like that. So I thought that scene with Olivia
with Carrie and I was really fun. I thought in
the hotel.
Speaker 4 (10:56):
Room, oh yeah, where you're buzzed.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
Yes, I'm just with this and I hate him and
how could I even do this? And then when Carrie
has the idea that like you don't have to lie.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
Yes, anything that sticks out in your memory of or
of course coming into OPA and working with the amazing
gear medias, I mean.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
Yes, I do. I remember all those things just at
you know, the pace of the show was like super fast,
and that was interesting just you know, I like that
when you like shows that are just they're going along,
they're doing their own thing, and you get you have
to fold into the to the tone the style of
the show, and I found that interesting. And that was
a scene. That scene in the hotel room was one
(11:35):
where we could just relax a little bit. I think
Tom even came down for a few minutes from the
office just to just to say hi and watch a
little bit, did he Yeah, Yeah, that was really nice. Yeah,
I think that. I just remember feeling really connected and
it was a really nice scene and very really well
written and really fun, just a really fun view.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
Was so well written.
Speaker 4 (11:58):
I was going to tell me Laura how much I
loved her hairdo on the show. You have this updu
you know that's just so staunch and so like serious.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
Fashion moment of the episode, so good fashion. This fucking
episode is all about Melaura Harden's fucking French twist.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
Yes, and it's kind of a weird French twists. It's
a weird French.
Speaker 4 (12:20):
Twist, a weird one.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
It's not like the typical, almost like a little bit
like going this way, a little bit star Trek even.
Speaker 4 (12:30):
It was a little star like Gary Oldman in Dracula,
you know when he has that sort of that do
you that's pulled back like that?
Speaker 3 (12:39):
Was that a conscious choice on your behalf or it
was just like that's what was decided or how did
that happen?
Speaker 2 (12:45):
I think we collaborated on that together. We just figured
out what would be the best thing for her. I
remember agreeing that we wanted her to look very corporate,
very corporate, very pulled together, very classy. Well, her life
was all in order until.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
This, until it is not. That is my fashion moment
of the whole episode? Is that dang? Oh yeah, that hairstyle.
That's what stuck out for me. Over the cl I'm
thinking like, oh, what were my favorite clothing was a favorite?
And I was like, it's Malura Harden's hair, like one hundred.
Speaker 4 (13:21):
We'll be right back, guys.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
I thought that your work on the stand is my
Harry Washington acting moment of the Week, and I want
to hear your guys, but it's my Carry Washington acting
moment of the week, and it's also just for you
guys listening. In the episode, she's standing by dick husband
(13:50):
for the whole episode, like he did not murder anybody,
And you think that it's only one girl that he's
sending these pictures to, and the whole episode unleashes how
many chicks he's sending these things to. And then you
finally get up on the stand and you say how
you really feel about him? Yeah, he's a disgusting piece
of shit.
Speaker 4 (14:09):
Rosen Asser, Right, He's like and he assumes that the
answer is going to be yes. Of course. He's like,
do you you love your husband? Right? And she's like, no,
I don't love him. And he was such a great
like turn and unexpected like answer. And people are like, oh,
my god, of course she's telling the truth. Because she's
telling the truth. I fucking hate him, But he wasn't
a murderer. Yeah, of course they're going to acquit him.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
And she actually was telling the truth.
Speaker 4 (14:32):
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Speaker 3 (14:34):
And Josh Molina's double take on that was so good.
What you don't you like, he does a whole double
take really good. Rosen is such a Rosan bozo dufis
all the time, the poor guy. He just gets the
short end of the stick.
Speaker 4 (14:50):
But lord, did our director keep coming in and telling
you to pick up the pace because that's what they
They did that with us all the time, just to
keep that pace up faster us.
Speaker 5 (15:01):
Yeah, it's so annoying that it makes the scenes better,
Like it truly makes everything better when you're just speaking
faster and keeping that pace up.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
It works for you for that show, for sure.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
Yeah, I totally did. G and Melaura, did you have
favorite acting moments Harry Washington School of Acting Moments from
episode three or four?
Speaker 4 (15:22):
I had one. It's a little it's a bit vain
because with me and you, I love when Huck turned
So throughout the episode, Quinn is trailing Huck, She's following him.
She goes to an AA meeting and Huck is saying
he drank whiskey, which is code word for I murdered someone,
and she just she's just behind him and following him
(15:45):
throughout the episode, and finally he turns around in the
office and he's like, you're interested, Like, I know you're
interested in being like me and killing people and you
need to stop. And oh, I just love that scene.
And your reactions to me were so good because you're
like you were almost like getting off on it and
exhilarated with what I was telling you.
Speaker 3 (16:03):
I normally think I'm so terrible, and I'm usually pretty right,
but like that scene, I was like, I buy it.
Speaker 4 (16:11):
Yes, I bought it.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
Show I buy it.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
I thought, you guys a storyline, you know, being that
I'm not like watching every episode of Scandal. I thought
that storyline was really interesting and great. I totally got
sucked into that and knew what was going on, what
was going on with you guys. And I also thought
that was a really interesting word that he kept using.
I can stop interested. That was great. That was a
(16:37):
really great I really liked that. I was like, that's
a really interesting thing for him to say stop being interested,
rather than stop asking questions or stop it was a
good It was good writing there.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
Yeah, this is where we start to see how sick
Quinn really is, and I'm like all about it.
Speaker 4 (16:53):
Just to jump off really quickly, there is a fun
piece of trivia that I just want to throw it
you guys and at our listeners about Melaura. That freaking
blew my mind. So there was a little movie called
Back to the Future and well Melaura. There was an
actress who was playing Marty McFly's girlfriend named Jennifer Parker.
(17:18):
Her name was Claudia Wells, and this actress booked a pilot,
she dropped out of the movie, and Melaura was cast
as Marty McFly's girlfriend, Malaura. Do you want to tell
a little bit of that story.
Speaker 2 (17:30):
Eric Stoltz was hired to play Marty Hi and I
was cast to play his girlfriend. And then when he
was fired two weeks in and we did all the
promo stuff and everything. There were there's a guy who
wrote a book about Back to the Future actually, and
he was the one that called and told me that
it was two female executives in nineteen eighty whatever that
(17:52):
was six that said that they thought it emasculated their
lead man to have a girlfriend taller than him, and
Michael J. Fox is much shorter than me. So they
were the ones who decided, even against Bob's Mechus and
Bob Gail, who both were like, what, we think she's great,
Let's keep her, and the two female executives were They were.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
Wow, my, yeah, that is.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
Wild.
Speaker 4 (18:20):
How trippy was that? Oh?
Speaker 3 (18:22):
So, how old were you?
Speaker 2 (18:23):
How old are You're seventeen?
Speaker 3 (18:24):
I think, oh my god, well a really crazy Scandal
trivia history. George Newbern who played Quinn's husband and he
plays Charlie on Scandal for all seven seasons, and my
character and his his end up getting married in the
end and having a baby. But he was flown from
(18:45):
Northwestern University to screen test against Stoltz and Michael J.
Fox for Back to the Future in another alternate universe
sliding doors moment. Yeah, back to the Future is starring
George Newbern and which also would have been outstanding.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
All other things.
Speaker 3 (19:05):
Was there any eating in this episode?
Speaker 4 (19:07):
There was some eating in the OPA office. You and
I are eating eating a pickle, and I bet, I
would bet a flinking hundred dollars that you had hummus
on the side with that pickle. And I probably said,
give me what Katie's eating, because I used to just
eat whatever you were eating.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
One of my go to snacks on Scandal was just
dipping kosher salty pickles into a to go thing of hummus,
And definitely one of the scenes in this episode I
totally forgot is Quinn taking a bite out of a pickle.
And I have to say, usually I think acting while
eating looks really good. And when I watched me do it,
I was like, Oh, that's definitely not Quinn, that's Katie,
(19:44):
and it looks so stupid.
Speaker 4 (19:46):
You looked at that pickle like it said something mean
to you. You were like, and then you ate it.
It was so funny me, Laura, do you like to
eat on set? Are you like a Grazer craft service
or do you try to stay away from the food?
Speaker 2 (20:00):
I try to stay away from. Yeah, the craft service, yeah,
for sure. Usually isn't really very good. Usually it's just
a lot of crap. But when I wake up for
a super early call time, I do have to eat
a little bit more than I eat in a normal
day just to keep going. And I have to nap too, Yes, yeah,
usually I'll nap at lunchtime. If I'm working a lot
(20:22):
and I've started at four am or five am or something,
I cannot I hate early morning. I definitely have to
nap if I get up that early and I have
to keep going and going.
Speaker 3 (20:31):
Yeah, Okay, anybody's favorite writing moments of the episode, because
mine is definitely all the girls on the stands. Yes,
they cut together all of his texts that were just
so dirty. I wish I had them to read right now?
Does any those they killed me?
Speaker 4 (20:52):
So good?
Speaker 2 (20:53):
I am a toilet he wanted, oh yeah.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
Something about wanting to pee or toilet, I don't remember.
Speaker 4 (20:59):
What it was. He wanted me to be his toiletters
or yeah, something he wanted to be my toilet.
Speaker 3 (21:06):
All I do is picture our writers, who are all
friends of ours, sitting in a circle in the writer's
room just coming up with what these.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
Texts someone else?
Speaker 3 (21:16):
What would be such a dirty ass text that on
a court stand would be just so inappropriate and hilarious.
Speaker 4 (21:23):
That was my favorite movie, Yeah, Katie. One of my
A couple of my favorite lines are by Abby. Abby
says when we're boarding Senator that your husband Laura's husband,
and Abby says, slutshame the dead girl all aboard.
Speaker 3 (21:35):
Oh yeah, so good, so good, so good.
Speaker 4 (21:40):
She also calls him the pervy texting pervy perv, which
I thought was really good.
Speaker 3 (21:45):
And only Darby can deliver lines. Yes, so freaking well.
Speaker 2 (21:49):
Yes, I will just say I loved someone That was
a standout for me. And I don't know if this
is really writing, but I guess it is writing too.
Is the widow Yes, who was there at the burial
when the president shows up. That's my favorite acting moment.
That woman. She was amazing, Milaura.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
That stood out for me too.
Speaker 2 (22:09):
I didn't even know that he was allowed to be
buried here, and I.
Speaker 4 (22:12):
Yes, Oh did you do that?
Speaker 2 (22:14):
And it was like she got so much in her
five lines, and I just believed her. And she was
so distraught and at the same time confused and honored
but also baffled and like it was all going through
her head, like but I thought he wasn't allowed to
be buried here, but he is. And now you're showing
up and it's like all these things like ticking and clicking.
(22:35):
She's not really putting it together because you're not getting
that she's bright enough to put that together. But then
the next scene is where you find out that he
has the tattoo of the special whatever unit that they're
trying to cover something. Right, that's probably a long story
line that must go through the season or whatever.
Speaker 3 (22:52):
Yes it does, it's a whole runner. And they had
that beautiful Nina Simone song playing. I think it was
Na Simone, right, I think It's Going to Rain by
Nina simonin it's like the most beautiful, yeah version of it,
And it's so effective and so beautiful and very scammed.
Speaker 4 (23:06):
And Tony's so good in that scene too. He gets
super emotional when he's saluting. Oh it's And I remember
being on set and we were on location obviously for
that scene, and I remember just watching them both and
just being like, oh my god, they're so good. They're
so sad. And of course my character is the one
that killed him, and it was actually her brother that
was murdered. But yeah, I thought the same thing. Malaura.
(23:28):
She really stood out. But sometimes you get guest stars
like that to just just knock it out of the park,
that are just so emotionally available and just so good.
Just so she was wonderful, just so simple.
Speaker 2 (23:39):
Yeah, but it's like all the right things were going
through her head and you can just see it in
her eyes. It was fantastic.
Speaker 3 (23:45):
Yeah, we will be back with more after the break me, Laura,
have you been in horror films? Germo Diaz can tell.
Speaker 4 (23:57):
Us, uh, he has Melaura Harden been in horror films.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
A very very successful actress. She's definitely been in horror films.
What are they g tails?
Speaker 4 (24:08):
You can I just and listen these two films, I
guess I would categorize them as horror slash thriller, possibly
sci fi a little bit. The first one is called
Caged and it's on t B and Melaura plays the
most hateful prison cop. And your performance, Malaura is brilliant.
(24:30):
I didn't even remember it was you. You were so good.
And she has this amazing scar. The special effects makeup
person on that movie was ridiculously talented. Oh really, tell
us tell her that. Do you remember shooting that movie?
Speaker 2 (24:47):
Like oh yeah, yeah, no I really remember, and.
Speaker 4 (24:50):
Chewing your gum like she choos gum. Oh she's so good, Katie.
You have to watch it just for her? Is it too, No,
you'll be able to. It's disturbing. I don't know if
i'd say scary.
Speaker 2 (25:01):
It's disturbing, disturbing, Yeah, yeah, I think the scar is
just it was done with this stuff. That's that basically
what it does is it just it dries and squeezes
your skin to make it makes this indent in your skin,
and it literally goes down like this, and we shot
all of my stuff in a few days. If it
(25:22):
had been longer than that, the scar like the imprint
that it made that we would put on the blue
like they put it on and then take it off
at night. But I literally did have an imprint a
couple of days after films. So I don't think if
I were working on a bigger budget movie that was
a smaller budget movie, I think they wouldn't have I
(25:42):
would never let anyone use that on my face.
Speaker 3 (25:44):
Again, No good to know.
Speaker 2 (25:47):
It looks incredible, and for a low budget movie, I
was very happy with how good it looked. It just
looks so it's so real. It's amazing.
Speaker 4 (25:55):
It really did.
Speaker 2 (25:57):
It did skin, I don't think.
Speaker 4 (25:59):
And that's on your face too, Like it's one thing
if it's on your arm or your leg or your back,
but it's your face. I've had stuff like that too,
and I've been like, look, I'm not sure about this.
And you worked with the wonderful lead actor in the
film is name Eddie Gathegi. I don't know if I'm pronouncing.
Speaker 3 (26:13):
It right, Beggy, I love it. Yes, he works with
my theater company.
Speaker 2 (26:18):
He's the best he's great. He's so great, you guys.
Speaker 4 (26:22):
Is chemistry was so wonderful. I mean, Laura's character is
has it out for this guy who's in solitary confinement
in the prison, and ugh, but they just they played
off each other so good.
Speaker 3 (26:34):
What's the other arm?
Speaker 4 (26:35):
The other one is called Clock. Margo Sussie is in it.
How do you is what's Margo's last name?
Speaker 3 (26:40):
Margo Sussie?
Speaker 4 (26:41):
Yeah, yes, yes. Melura plays Elizabeth Simms, who's the head
of this institution who's that are doing a clinical trial
for women whose biological clocks are not ticking like this,
And it's super it's super trippy, it's very sci fi.
Of course they have they put they place these in
plants inside them and then they start hallucinating and craving
(27:03):
raw eggs and oh my god, you're again. Your performance
was stellar and you were frightening and disturbing, but in
a whole different way. It's called Clock, and it's on
Hulu where people can go and watch Scandal and then
go watch Malaura's movie Clock.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
Yes, that's right, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (27:20):
And since we're talking about Malaura's entire career, I just
need to talk about were you shooting the office at
the same time that you shot this episode.
Speaker 2 (27:29):
Yeah, I think I was. Yeah, I think I wasn't
working in this particular episode of the Office, so I
was able to do this.
Speaker 4 (27:36):
Yeah, Katie was so excited about the Office.
Speaker 3 (27:39):
My shit, everybody's so excited. Our Office fans like annoying
you at all times, and that's me. How did you
get that part? What was it like working with Steve
Krell and everybody on that show who are all geniuses
and yourself included in that. Just give us a few
hot tips about the Office.
Speaker 2 (28:03):
What's really interesting about me being on the show from
my perspective is that I had auditioned for the day
before for a series a pilot, but it was already
picked up to a series. It was already sold, and
then I went in to this one and it was like, Okay,
they need you to come over there at three. I
hadn't gotten the material. I was like, okay, I'll just
(28:24):
get there early. I'll look at the sides and I'll
go in. That was how it was. I just didn't
have time, so I went outside and worked on it
for twenty minutes. Whatever. Went in and Ken Koppas was there,
who was the director of the pilot and Greg Daniels
who created the office, and Phyllis who was the casting associate,
and Alison Jones who was the casting director, And I
(28:46):
could tell, like the minute I started doing the scene
that they were really liking what I was doing. You know,
you can just feel that in a room, right, Yes, yeah.
I feel so bad for young actors that they don't.
Speaker 4 (29:00):
I'll never know that feeling. Yeah. Right.
Speaker 2 (29:02):
You learn so much from being across from producers and
directors and them saying can you try that again? And
do this? And you learn how to actually like work
and how to deal with nerves and how to deal
with there's so much education in that, and how to
sit there with your fellow actors that are going in
for the same part as you and spat with them
or not chat with them, or deal with their like
(29:24):
you know, sending you vibes and you just like dealing
with I'm just going to say focused.
Speaker 3 (29:28):
Yeah, it's such a huge.
Speaker 2 (29:29):
That's an incredible education for a young actor, so that
I'm really sad that they don't because my daughter, my
oldest daughter, is an actor, and I just they've gotten
to do some of it because they did start really young.
So they have gotten to do some of it, but
it's just I'm not happy about it anyway. So anyway,
if I went in, I think and then I don't
remember if we did any adjustments or anything. I just
think they were really into it, laughing and stuff, and
(29:51):
then we went I left, and then I got called
back for the pilot and I was going it to
test and al Alison Jones was also the casting director
on that one. And Allison came out to the hallway
and it was just me sitting there waiting to go in,
and she said, she said hi. I said, oh, hi,
and I said that felt like that that that thing,
(30:12):
that office one, which was just a guest star possible
recurring character. And I was like, that seems like that
went really well yesterday, and she was like, yeah, I
think it went really well. And I was like, maybe
I'll get both of these. That would be fun. And
she goes, yeah, I really want you to get that one,
and I was like and I was like.
Speaker 3 (30:29):
Yeah, but this was a regular and that one's a
guest star like that star.
Speaker 2 (30:34):
Yeah, I was like a starring role regular sould series.
And then she goes, yeah, there's gonna that one's gonna
be that's gonna be a special one. That's the one
I want you to get. And I was like, and
I was like, okay, you know, it didn't make any
sense to me right that it was like guest star, possible, recurring.
But anyway I went and I did not get the
one that was like the series strength series came and
(30:55):
went like that. I don't even remember.
Speaker 4 (30:57):
What the name of the show was.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
Remember, but it was it like they did the pilot
and I even picked up. I don't even think it
went right. And sure enough, Alison was right like, this
was the one to get. We had six episodes. It
was our first season, and I think I was in
every single episode most a lot of it on the phone.
I was in every episode. And then and then the
second season came around, I was still just a recurring character,
(31:21):
so they would just call me in for which episodes
And then there was one episode they had written for
me and I was guest starring on another show and
they couldn't have me. And that was where they were like, oh,
we better make her right, we better make her right.
Speaker 3 (31:34):
Oh wow, it talk about Yeah, that's what I was
talking about.
Speaker 4 (31:39):
How many seasons did it go?
Speaker 2 (31:41):
Yeah, it went a lot of seasons. I mean, I
when Steve Croll wasn't in it anymore, I wasn't really
in it as much anymore either. I wasn't in it
until last season just as a guest start.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
Was it a blast being on that set? Was it
just was?
Speaker 2 (31:54):
It was great? It was so great. Steve's wonderful to
work with. He's so great at patching a ball that
you'll throw his and then throwing one back at you
and he's never thrown off by a curveball. He's very
good to work with. And just the fun of the
comedy of and Greg Daniels is amazing as far as
just and the whole writing team.
Speaker 4 (32:15):
Did you guys have a hard time not cracking up,
not busting out laughing sometimes? Yeah, because we would have
a hard time not right. We'd have moments where we
couldn't stop laughing, and we were doing a drama and
the office is so hilarious, so I could imagine that
sometimes it was just hard to keep a straight face.
Speaker 2 (32:31):
Oh yeah, there were times when it was just impossible.
Speaker 4 (32:34):
Which is when you know the joke is good and
then it's working and do you know what I mean?
So it's right.
Speaker 3 (32:39):
Oh man, yeah, total, I love that show. I love
you on it. I don't know if there's a big
Office Scandal fan crossover, but if there are, this is
a fucking episode for you. Last thing I need to
comment on about the episode and then we can do
some tweets at the time. But I also forgot when
(33:00):
I rewatched this episode, the twist that your character killed
the girl. I forgot and I found myself being like
a gladiator on my couch. Ither was like, no, she didn't.
She fucking murdered her. What are you talking about. You
had the sides, and you were at the table read
(33:22):
so you knew all along that you murdered her. And
for those of you listening, if you remember so, it
comes around if Patrick, her husband, gets acquitted he didn't
murder the girl, but their marriage is obviously in shambles.
And then Olivia Pope runs after you in the hallway
of the courthouse and is like you you did it
because you thought it was only one girl and you
(33:43):
were going to fix this and fix your marriage by
But then you learned that you would have had to
murder like so many girls, so many girls.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
Everyone deserves a second chance.
Speaker 4 (33:54):
That's right, that's right, so good, and.
Speaker 3 (33:57):
Then you say everybody deserves a second chance. And then
you just go out and the world with your French
twist and your suit and you're just like, Wow, that
woman is going to run the world. She's a murderer.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
No one's ever gonna know.
Speaker 3 (34:13):
You really are just such a talent to go between
obviously drama, obviously comedy, and obviously horror or side or
whatever we're calling it, all of it, and the film
that you have out right now, Golden Vanity, the old school,
you know, Hollywood esque film. I mean, there is nothing
(34:37):
you can't watch TV. That's what you can't do.
Speaker 2 (34:40):
And I really can't do laugh at all.
Speaker 3 (34:42):
So I'm the I can't the worst. There's also twice
in this episode characters. The fun fact of this episode
is that episode characters contradict themselves twice. Shelley Myers on
the Stand says she does not want her husband to
go to jail. On the same scene, I would love
for him to go to jail. I get that, though.
Olivia tells Jake that she's not crying and then proceeds
(35:04):
to cry. Oh yeah, that was like a good that
was a good acting moment g and I always read
a few tweets at the time. Are you on Twitter, Malaura?
Speaker 4 (35:11):
Yeah, yep, were you on Twitter back then, Malaura during
the show?
Speaker 2 (35:18):
I guess so, probably not very actively, but sure probably.
Speaker 3 (35:23):
This is a real time capsule for what was going
on at that time and what I My favorite tweet
on October twenty fifth, twenty thirteen comes from at Josh
Molina at Michael six one one six zero zero two
writes at Josh Malina, what's your favorite part of being
on Scandal, and he writes the pay that's.
Speaker 4 (35:42):
So Josh freaking Josh se Vitamin Control at Vitamin Control tweeted,
I am no longer here for Olivia slash Fits. It's
gross and crazy unhealthy. I want Olivia Jake. He's much
more suitable, much more suitable match bye.
Speaker 3 (35:58):
Hashtag scandal at Radical Row tweeted the same thing. Just
watch Scandal and I hate to say it, but I'm
team Jake, which is this was the big thing, Malaura
that for seven seasons, people just really it was like
those bradder gen sures that were going on. Yeah, benefit
(36:20):
or benefit, Yeah, this is just so team Jake er
team fits, and most people I want to say or team.
Speaker 4 (36:26):
Fits, team fits. Yeah, I love this tweet. Let's see
at Helena underscore. Andrew's tweeted. Also, am I the only
one who thinks Quinn Perkins wants to be on snapped? Hashtags? Gowner,
Do you remember the show Snapped about women that snapped
and murdered their husband's.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
No, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (36:42):
Oh yeah I do.
Speaker 3 (36:44):
I don't even know what the hell that is.
Speaker 4 (36:46):
It's a really sick show about women that have just
murdered their husbands because they're so over him. So I think,
of course they were, you know, talking about the fact
that Quinn is interested and wants to start killing. So
you'd be a great You'd be wonderful on snaps.
Speaker 3 (36:59):
I would Quinn would have been wonderful on Snapped. And
then at UV oh no, at V just one minute, ah,
I just realized the obvious fits is Slash was part
of B six thirteen, explained his connection with Jake Rowan
and his ease and killing verna hashtag scandal. Yeah, yeah,
they're all bad.
Speaker 4 (37:18):
All yeah. And then our props guy George Props tweeted
the front cover the fake newspaper that we see on
the show that says mauthe Melly and it's a picture
of Bellamy Young on the front cover, and it's so good.
Our props master was so amazing. He always had the
best props and the most believable, awesome things on our show.
It was so great.
Speaker 3 (37:38):
Am I wrong? Is this the first episode where we
see Lisa Kudro or did she come out before?
Speaker 4 (37:43):
I feel like this is the first time we see her.
I could be mistaken, though, I was surprised.
Speaker 3 (37:48):
Yes, yeah, she recurred on the show for a bunch
of episodes. Who was a big fan of the show,
and I forgot that. Lisa Kudro comes in at episode
three or four that we're talking about today. But stay tuned, guys,
Lisa Kudro. We are trying to get her on this podcast.
So if anyone knows Lisa Kudro and can put in
a call or text Malaura, do you know Lisa Kutra?
Speaker 2 (38:09):
I mean I kind of do.
Speaker 3 (38:11):
Yeah, no way, tell her she needs to come on
this show.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
I have a friend that she's really close to, so
I could say something too.
Speaker 3 (38:19):
Is your friend Dan Bugatinsky.
Speaker 2 (38:21):
Dan is a good friend.
Speaker 3 (38:23):
He's all good friend too, and he's also going to
be a guest this season.
Speaker 2 (38:27):
Yeah, how come you don't have Dan on the show.
Speaker 4 (38:29):
We're going to.
Speaker 3 (38:31):
Saving him for we don't want to, We don't want
to tell the gladiators listening. But Dan's definitely gonna be on.
But Dan's also going to be getting a text because
he's best friend of Lisa Kudro, and if he doesn't
deliver us Lisa Kudro, I'm going to be mad at
Dan Bugatinsky.
Speaker 2 (38:44):
And Dan and I had dinner last night together.
Speaker 4 (38:46):
No way, Oh my god.
Speaker 2 (38:49):
He came to see Golden Vanity with another friend of ours,
another mutual friend of ours, Joanna Coles.
Speaker 3 (38:55):
I love Joanna Coles. Do you know Joanna Giermo? Janna Coles.
That's who took us when she was an editor of
a magazine. She took me you, Dan Bugatinsky. Wasn't it
YouTube DC see The White House Correspondent Dinner my god?
Speaker 4 (39:11):
No way?
Speaker 2 (39:12):
Yeah, So Joanna was the executive producer and the character
that I my character played loosely was loosely based on
for the Bull Type, which I started for free Form,
which is also on Hulu. So people can bounce from
clock to the bulletpe skin just.
Speaker 3 (39:30):
Like Danski you're just on a Scandal rewatch podcast right now.
Just say hi real quick. I'm doing an EP with
the person you were a dinner last night with Malaura Harden.
Speaker 2 (39:42):
Oh my god.
Speaker 3 (39:44):
Yes, she's saying Hi. You can't hear because technology is insane.
But for gladiators listening, I'm calling Dan. Will you know
you're coming on the podcast? You just have to. We're
teeing you up for your perfect episode. Know if I'm available.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
I can tell you that. I don't know if I'm available.
Speaker 4 (40:05):
She made the most beautiful, unbelievable film.
Speaker 3 (40:09):
I can't wait to see it. We're talking about it
right now.
Speaker 4 (40:12):
Oh yeah, yeah, she's incredible in it. She's incredible in it.
Speaker 2 (40:14):
I love you. I love Scandal, and anytime you want
me to talk to.
Speaker 4 (40:18):
You about it, I will.
Speaker 3 (40:19):
Okay, thank you, Even this little thing might end up
on the podcast. I love you so much. I'll be
bothering you in a little bit. I'll text you later.
I love you by I love you what. He's my
birthday twins, so I get to call him whenever I want.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
Yes, you do, great, Melaura.
Speaker 3 (40:39):
This was You are such a great actress. I'm definitely
going to see you in Golden Vanity and probably not
in clock or age because they sound terrifying and.
Speaker 2 (40:53):
They both start with the letter see, so it'll be easy.
Speaker 4 (40:57):
Yeah, So I don't do that.
Speaker 3 (41:00):
And this was such an awesome episode. It was a
classic Scandal up with awesome funness. And episode three oh
five is next called More Cattle, Less Less Bull. Thank
