GreenGuru thinks the Celtics might finish this season with record-breaking 75-7 record. Is that realistic? We discuss that, as well as the play of Payton Pritchard, The Jays and Neemias Queta in tonight’s episode of SOUND OFF after the Celtics led by as many as 32 points before polishing off a 122-102 win over the Wizards down in DC.

So with that, here's the latest episode sound Off of
the Boston Celtics after a one twenty two to one
o two Celtics win over the Washington Wizards. Sound Off

(00:48):
with me, folks on the Boston Celtics logging their second
win of the season and doing so by another twenty
point margin. It came by twenty three points on Opening
Night against the New York Knicks back in Boston, and
it comes tonight down in DC with another twenty point
win over the Washington Wizards down in DC.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
And listen, this.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
Wasn't an easy win in the end, but at the
start it did not look it. We gotta be honest,
the Celtics didn't look great, and you got to give
credit where credit is due the Wizards. They did look
great during the first quarter. Boston only held a one
point advantage at the end of the first twelve minutes,
and that's because Jordan Poole was on fire seventeen points
during the first quarter. I mean, he looked unbelievable, looked

(01:30):
like Jason Tatum did during the opening game of the
season for the Boston Celtics. But somehow the Seas still
found a way to overcome that. And by the way,
Jason Tatum scored fourteen of his own points during that
opening quarter tonight. But somehow the Celtics came together found
a way to still have a lead after that first quarter,
and then after that it was all Celtics. They were

(01:50):
up by one later in the second quarter and then
went on I believe it was a twenty nine to
seven run to really blow things open, open up a
huge lead, and then they eventually went on to lead
by as many as thirty two points before finishing off
the twenty point win. A few things that stood out
during this game other than kind of like the slow

(02:10):
start and being able to turn it on late in
the second quarter, was Peyton Pritchard's three point shooting. I mean,
he has come out of the gates this season red hot. Tonight,
he made five threes out of ten attempts, and he
missed his final couple from the field final few. Didn't
look so great at the end before he came out
of the game in the fourth quarter. But at the

(02:31):
start of the game, man, every time he made a
three point shot, it did not even touch the rim.
And I am not exaggerating again, five to ten from
three point range, and I'm pretty certain that every single
one of those makes. Those five makes literally did not
touch the rim. So Peyton Pritchard just continues to show

(02:52):
that he is one of the best three point shooters
in the NBA. He Sam Houser, You've got Jalen shooting
the ball well from three points range. Jason Tatum is
shooting the ball well from three point range, although tonight
was not his best, showing three of eleven from distance.
You've got Derek White, who can shoot the ball from
three point range at a high clip. U was four
for seven tonight against the Wizards, and Drew Holliday also,

(03:16):
as we know, he's one of the best three point
shooters in the league, and in particular from the corners
last season. So the Celtics are just dripping with talent
and shooting from beyond the arc. We talked about this
after the first game when they made twenty nine to
three pointers. Tonight they make seventeen on forty five attempts. Listen,
I think Joe Missoula will take it any night. Shooting

(03:36):
thirty eight percent from three point range. As a team,
when they do that, they are gonna win far more
often than not. But one of the key cogs in
that three point shooting is undoubtedly Peyton Pritchard. He came out,
he was outstanding last year, shot forty percent from three
point range last year, and it certainly looks like he's
gonna do it again this season and might even tick

(03:58):
up into the low to mid four this season. The
way that he's shooting the ball again. Did not even
touch the rim on his makes tonight. So he played great,
he looked great. He continues to play at a high level,
and the Celtics continue to have what might be the
best three man guard rotation in the NBA with Derek White,
Drew Holliday, and Peyton Pritchard. All of them bring a

(04:21):
little bit something different to the court on offense and
on defense. So it gives Joe Mizoula a lot of
options of what he wants to do each night in
having those guys out on the court and who they
share the court with. So that stood out for sure.
And then you got to talk about the Jays, I mean,
Jalen Brown and Jason Tatum have both come out of
the gates playing fantastic basketball this season. It's not a

(04:44):
secret a lot of people have talked about the motivation
that they might be taken from what occurred with them
individually during the offseason after they won the NBA Championship
back in June. It certainly looks like they are motivated
coming out at the start of the season. We saw
Jason Tatum on Tuesday a thirty seven point, ten assists
double double and barely played in the fourth quarter. In fact,

(05:06):
I'm not even sure if he did play in the
fourth quarter. And then tonight another double double, this time
was scoring in rebounds, almost logged a triple double finishes
with twenty five points, eleven rebounds, and six assists, just
really commanding the game in knowing exactly where he needs
to be and where his teammates are going to be.
One pass stands out in particular. Tonight, he passed Peyton

(05:27):
Pritchard open on a three point shot on the left wing.
He passed it to him from the right wing over
to the left wing and literally passed it passed Peyton
Prichard open so that Pritchard could catch the ball, stepping
into the shot and being able to get the ball
up right off the catch. So Tatum continues to be excellent,
and then Jalen Brown took it up a notch from
his opening night performance tonight scores twenty seven points after

(05:50):
scoring twenty three during the opener, and tonight he was
electric from all over the field fifty percent from the field,
fifty percent from three point range, four of five from
the free throw line. So you love to see him
stroking the ball the way he has been over the
first couple of games, and tonight he is the leading
scorer for the Boston Celtics with twenty seven points, but

(06:11):
it goes beyond that. He also grabbed eight rebounds and
dished out three assists. But let's talk about the other
side of the court, where Jalen Brown continues to prove
to everyone that he should be an all defensive player.
He says it every year that he doesn't get chosen
when he comes back the next year, he says, I
was pissed off when I found out that I wasn't

(06:32):
voted on to that team, And it certainly seems like
that's the case again this season. Four steals tonight for
Jalen Brown. Let's put that into perspective. No other player
on the Celtics had more than one steal in this game.
They had seven total as a team. Jalen Brown had
four of them. This is after, you know, we can

(06:52):
look back to the opening night win and you're all
gonna remember when he pressured Jalen Brunson in the back
court after the Celtics hit their twenty first three pointer
of the game when they were up by twenty six points.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Jalen Brown was the one.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
Applying pressure in the back court, forcing in eight second
violation out of Brunson and the Knicks. And then tonight
he comes into this game and grabs four steals to
lead the game Jason Tatum also had one steal of
his own. So both of these guys just electric high
level players at both ends of the court. They continue
to do it for the Boston Celtics night in and
night out, and as we all know, if the Jays

(07:27):
are playing at this level, it doesn't even matter what's
happening with the rest of the roster. The Celtics are
going to be very difficult to beat. And then you
just take a look at the rest of the roster
with Derek White, Al Horford, Drew Holliday, Peyton Pritchard, Luke Cornett,
all of these guys and Christas porzingis when he comes back.
These guys can play ball Man Sam Houserdnio and play tonight,

(07:48):
by the way, but these guys coming around the Jays,
I mean, this team is just I think Brian Scalabrini
said it on the broadcast tonight, like what do you
do as the opponent? What do you do when you've
got Jalen Brown and Jason Tatum playing at this level,
and then you can come with all of these other
players who are outstanding NBA players, some of which will

(08:10):
be in the Hall of Fame, surrounding Jalen Brown and
Jason Tatum on the court. So just another great game
out of them, and another great game out of the
people around them.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
One of those people around them is Nimias Cada.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
Tonight, he got his most minutes of the season, played
thirteen and a half minutes tonight and again stuffs the
stat sheet with twelve points and seven rebounds. Again, does
that in less than fourteen minutes of play. I feel
like every time this guy gets extended playing time, he
just stuffs the stat sheet. Like you look back at
all of his games where he plays major minutes and

(08:43):
I consider, you know, thirteen plus minutes pretty major minutes
for him. He just always stuffs the stat sheet. Tonight,
five of seven from the field. One of those misses,
by the way, was a three pointer. He took it
the end of the shot clock from the left wing.
I was like, okay, if Neimi has taken threes of
Celtics really feeling good from long distance.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
But yeah, he.

Speaker 1 (09:03):
Finishes with twelve points, seven rebounds. Four of those rebounds
were offensive. So he continues to attack the glass with
this seven foot frame and really just fit into this
team and exactly what they need. And they are going
to need him. Okay, Porzingis is not going to be
back for a bit, and as we saw last season
starting in about December, when Keda gets plugged into this lineup,

(09:26):
he is a legitimate NBA player. There's a reason why
he earned a legitimate, full guaranteed contract from the Celtics
when he became a free agent this summer. That's because
they believe that he is a real, legitimate rotational piece
for them. And tonight he showed it yet again. Just
another great game out of him when he gets on

(09:46):
the court, finishes well around the basket, great hands, He's
doing great things defensively and again attacking the glass at
both ends of the court. So Nimi, another great game.
Looking forward to seeing him the rest of the season.
All we've got a few questions and comments coming in
from our fans. We're gonna start out with numbers guy
talking about Boston's start of this season. Then we're gonna

(10:08):
go with just Brian talking about how the game started
out with Jordan Pool just being on fire and the
Celtics having to figure out a way to come back.

Speaker 2 (10:18):
And then lastly we're gonna wrap up with.

Speaker 1 (10:19):
Green Guru, who has a little bit of an ambitious
number that he throws out for what he thinks the
Celtics are gonna have this season in terms of a record.
So let's get into it. First question, comment coming in
from numbers guy. All right, numbers guy says early period,
good start, period, one at a time, with a little

(10:40):
clap emoji. Numbers Guy, I'm pretty sure that you're saying
exactly what Joe Mizula is saying every single day that
he is around this team. Yes, it's a great start.
You said good start. I'm saying great start. The team
is playing really good basketball. They are two to zero
out of the gates for the third straight season. Joe
Mizula has never had a head coaching season where the

(11:01):
Celtics didn't start to And oh, okay, so it's a
good start out of the gates. But one game at
a time. I guarantee you they let go of Tuesday's
win after that game, and they started concentrating on tonight.
And now they're gonna let go of this game that
they won down in DC and they're gonna start concentrating
on the next game, which is coming up in just

(11:21):
a couple nights out in Detroit against the Pistons, and
that comes on Saturday night. So one at a time
for the Celtics. That's the approach that they've taken for
the last couple of seasons. They don't look too far ahead,
they don't look backward. They are concentrating on the moment
at hand, And to be honest with you, they might
not even be thinking yet about Detroit. They might be

(11:42):
thinking about what tomorrow brings for them. Are they gonna
get out on the court and practice, are they going
to get some individual work, are they flying? Whatever the
case may be. They're going to concentrate on that. And
then the next game comes on Saturday night against the Pistons,
the game that the Celtics probably should win. I mean,
Kate Cunningham was great in the opener for the Pistons.
They did not win that game, I don't believe, but

(12:04):
they've got some talent on that team. But the Celtics
should definitely win that game if they play up to
their standards. So one game at a time, they're two
and zero out of the gates. Who knows where this
is gonna wind up, but definitely a good start for
the Celtics and having a nice all around play from
the team and everyone who's gotten into the game so far,
including some nice fourth quarter run for the Stay Ready

(12:25):
group Tonight down in DC. All right, Jess Brian coming
in next with his comments saying the pool party started hot,
but the Celtics decided to shut it down, even had
to stop the game a couple times to wipe the court.
That is true, A couple beers got spilled along the sideline.
I know Drew Carter and Brian Scalabrini were loving that

(12:45):
or not so much continues on with just Brian's comment.
JT and JB are both becoming a real problem. I
think they've been a problem for a long time, more
so than last season. Cata was win decks, half court
p doing half court things. All right, there's a lot
to get to in this comment, So let's go one
by one here. The pool party started out hot, but

(13:05):
the Celtics decided to shut it down.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
Okay, let's go with the numbers.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
Jordan Poole did open this game up with seventeen points
during the first quarter on six of eight, shooting five
of seven from distance. Included in that, so he was
I mean, he was outstanding. Okay, you can't beat around
the bush. He was really really good during that first quarter.
But what does he wind up with the rest of
the night, Only seven points over the final three quarters,

(13:30):
nine of sixteen from the field. So you do the math.
Nine of sixteen minus six of eight. He was only
three of eight for the rest of the game after
the first quarter in that hot start. So the Celtics
certainly decided to shut it down. The defense. I mean,
it's been pretty solid through the first couple of games.
I'm sure it could be better, and Joe Missoula would

(13:52):
not hate if things got tightened up a little bit more.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
But they put the clamps down. They shut it down
after the first quarter.

Speaker 1 (13:58):
And Jordan Poole, he doesn't walk away from this game
feeling as good as he did at the end of
that first quarter. Next up in these comments, JT and
JB are both becoming a real problem, more so than
last season. Okay, I can see where you're coming from there, Brian.
I think that they've been a real problem for years now.

(14:18):
But your last point, I think is what stands out
the most, more so than last season. I am with
you in the fact, in the belief that both of
them are better this season than they were last season. Yes,
we're only two games in, we can't just jump to conclusions.
But from what we saw from the preseason, from what

(14:40):
we saw simply of Jalen Brown coming back looking like
he's in the best shape of his life, both of
these guys looking like they are absolutely motivated. There is
no level of satisfaction flowing off of their hands on
the court that you can see from them winning a
championship that last season they want do it again. There

(15:01):
is no satisfaction. The drive is still there, the motivation
is still there, and both of them have been really, really,
really good through the preseason and the first two regular
season games. So I would not be surprised if both
of them wind up having career years this season together,
all while fitting in around the rest of the team.

(15:22):
And that's the best part about these guys. They are
both superstars. They will both be on the All Star
team this season. You know, granted, health knock on wood,
let's hope that they both stay healthy. They will both
be on the All Star team. But they make sure
that they get theirs within the flow of the game.
They do not make the game flow around them in

(15:43):
order for them to put up these numbers. They flow
around the game. It's very different than like when James
Harden was putting up crazy numbers when he was playing
for the Houston Rockets years ago, Like the game flowed
around him, and that's happened with many stars throughout the league.
For Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown, they flow around the

(16:04):
game and they take everything as it comes throughout the game.
They don't force things, and both of them just look
absolutely fantastic through the first two games of this season.
And as I said the preseason, last part is just
Brian's comment. Cata was windex That's absolutely right. Seven rebounds
in less than fourteen minutes tonight, crushing it on the

(16:24):
offensive glass. You love to see it using that seven
foot frame with a huge wingspan to crush the glass
like windecks.

Speaker 2 (16:30):
I love it.

Speaker 1 (16:31):
And then he says half court ped doing half court things.
Peyton Pritchard did throw one in from half court actually
farther than half court tonight.

Speaker 2 (16:38):
He banked it in. Again.

Speaker 1 (16:39):
I don't think that one counted, unfortunately, but he's still
doing it.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
It's crazy.

Speaker 1 (16:44):
I don't know how this guy makes so many shots
from half court and beyond half court in the middle
of NBA games.

Speaker 2 (16:51):
Think about all of us.

Speaker 1 (16:52):
Everyone who's probably listening to this has been on a
basketball court and at some point you're gonna go to
half court and just fire a few up, see if
you can make him. Maybe you're messing around with a
team that you were on back in the day. I
know I didn't make him very often, and that was
not during a game. It feels like Peyton Pritchard does
it fifty percent of the time he takes one, he's
gonna make it. It's insane. So yes, half court ped

(17:13):
doing half court things. He just continues to make these
crazy shots, and I can't wait for him to do
some more that actually count the season, all right, Last
one for tonight coming in from Green Guru, and his prediction,
as I said at the start, is very ambitious. He
says quite simply, here it is seventy five and seventeen. Okay,

(17:39):
green Guru, I think you've been drinking the green kool
Aid before making this comments. Seventy five and seven would
not only be the best team in the history of
the NBA, but it would be significantly the best team
in the NBA. I believe the record right now is
seventy three and nine. That was with the Warriors back
in the twenty fifteen to six team season, So you're

(18:02):
talking about beating that by two games. And just to
put into perspective what the Warriors did that season, they
only beat the Chicago Bulls record by one game. Okay,
the Bulls were seventy two to ten. Then you get
to the Warriors who were seventy three and nine. So
we're talking about trying to get two games better than them.
I think the cart way ahead of the horse. That

(18:23):
is not something that we should do. However, I will
say that this Celtics team is so talented. The chemistry
has absolutely carried over from last season. Brad Stevens uses
this term. I've always used this term that every season
is its own entity, every game is its own entity.
So basically, the way that you can apply that to

(18:44):
this comment is, yes, the Celtics brought back almost the
entire team from last season, but just because they brought
all those players back does not guarantee that the chemistry
will carry over and come back from last season. There
was no guarantee. We're a couple games in, we're through

(19:05):
the preseason. I think it is pretty darn obvious that
it has in fact carried through. The chemistry is great.
They're just picking up where they left off last season,
and as we've talked about through the first couple episodes
this season, it seems like everyone on the team is
just getting better and better and better, and that is

(19:27):
dangerous for the rest of the NBA. Does that mean
that the Celtics are gonna win at an all time rate?
And as green Guru is saying, win seventy five games
this season, I don't think we should put our money
on that. I think this team is gonna be great.
I think they're gonna win a lot of games. They
might wind up being the best record in the NBA

(19:47):
or in the Eastern Conference, maybe both, who knows. But
I think predicting a seventy five and seventeen oh baby,
that is that is very ambitious.

Speaker 2 (19:58):
So let's slow down a little bit. Let's let these
games unfold.

Speaker 1 (20:01):
Let's see where the Celtics stand by the new year,
and in particularly by the time Christas Porzingis comes back.
We don't know when that's going to be, so let's
slow it down. Let's let the games unfold. And as
we already heard, in one of these comments. Take it
one game at a time, all right. That's a wrap
for tonight's episode of Sound Off with the Boston Celtics again.
The Celtics with a one twenty two to one oh

(20:23):
two win over the Wizards down in DC. Boston is
two to zero now this season, and both wins have
been by twenty or more points, so they are just
picking up right where they left off. They'll be back
on the court Saturday night. That game has taken place
in Detroit against the Pistons and Kate Hunningham, who again
had a great first game of the season. Tip Off

(20:44):
is at seven o'clock Eastern and you can catch the
game on NBC Sports Boston. Thanks for tuning in, and again,
if you have not subscribed to the feed on your
favorite podcast platform, please go and click subscribe and we'll
see you against Saturday night with another episode.
