Speaker 1 (00:02):
What's up?
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Its way up at Angela Yee and I'm here with
Naji from Tigar Talk and we have the champ on
the line. We got Jeran Boots and it's what's up, Boots?
Speaker 1 (00:12):
How you feeling?
Speaker 3 (00:13):
What's going on? Are you feeling?
Speaker 1 (00:15):
Where are you at now in Philly?
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Yeah, I'm in Philly all right, getting ready for the
big fighters going down April twelfth. We're going to Atlantic City, right, Naji.
Speaker 4 (00:24):
Man, we out. I can't wait.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Now.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
You know we both were at the fight in Philly
as well, so that had to be an amazing feeling
against David Abanazien.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Yeah, it was a great feeling. You know.
Speaker 5 (00:37):
That was the first fight the Bergo Center and I
think I think we did like fifteen thousand and that
was you know, that was like the first fight there,
so you know, it was history for me.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
So it was a blessing and I was excited.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Now I wanted to ask you. I saw Toya Femo
Lopez talking about you and your fighting style and and
things that are good, things that are bad. But he
did say you get very distracted by the crowd, and
I was thinking Philly had to be While it's amazing,
it also is a lot of people, you know, in
the audience and a lot of people going crazy.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
How is that for you?
Speaker 2 (01:13):
And how do you stay not distracted by what's going
on in the audience.
Speaker 5 (01:16):
Yeah, I don't know what people will be telling me.
I don't be distracted about the crowd. I'll be if
I'm looking at the crowd. I'm looking at my brothers.
That's the only people I'm looking at, you know, because
they've been in the ring before and they might see
something that my dad didn't see, you know, and things
like that. That's the only people I'll be looking at
besides like, besides the you know, the crawling on the side.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
This is my brother. That's it. I ain't worry about
nobody else.
Speaker 4 (01:39):
Yeah, now that was dope, I think. You know, after
the Advenetion fight, obviously you went back to rematch, Karen.
You know, that was a big deal. And I think
for you, the expectations are really high because of how
good you are. So do you feel like the expectations
are unfair? Like if you don't get a stoppished that
people start to kind of criticize and things like that.
Speaker 5 (01:58):
I'm at the point, right, I'm at the point where
I don't even like, like care what nobody got to say.
No more, because it seemed like whatever, no matter what
I do, they got something to say. You know, I
beat somebody twelve nothing. Oh he should have not came out.
I knocked somebody out. Oh, we don't know if he
can go to this. We don't know if he got
a gas tank. I went twelve rounds standing up. The
(02:21):
whole time I've been doing this since I was a kid, Like,
this is no matter what I do, Like everybody got
something to say. So you got to do what's best
for you and not worry about whateverbod else got to say.
And that's why I be locked in on me. You know,
I don't really care about what he got got to say.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
I think another thing with boxing right now is we've
seen so many different upsets and things happening. You know,
when we look at like LaMonte Roads versus Tank, when
you look at Ryan Garcia versus Devin Handy, it feels
like it's been like a lot of a spectacle of
things that don't even necessarily have to do with boxing.
It's like, you know, sometimes things outside of that, but
then when they get in the ring, there's all these
(02:57):
different things, you know, Javonte talking about the gel or
whatever from his hair getting in his eye, and then
Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney. We don't know how that
would have turned out, if you know, perhaps I don't
know what kind of effect they're saying that that had
on Ryan Garcia and his performance and how that affected
Devin Haney. It just feels like we're boxing. It's a
(03:18):
lot more of outside the ring things happening. And I
know with you with this fight, Stanionis doesn't feel like
he has a lot of gimmicky things going on, and
neither do you. Do you ever feel pressure to be like,
you know, I gotta like do certain things to hype
it up.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
No, I mean I'm not that type of person.
Speaker 5 (03:35):
I al really, everybody be talking and all this stuff,
doing all these different antics and things like that. I'm
not that type of girl. Like I really, I'm here
to do one thing and that's putting hands on you.
And I'm not trying to talk none of that. You know,
these guys they go back and forth on the Internet
and stuff like that. I know you're trying to have
to hype the fight up and stuff like that. But
when a fight already sell you don't even God do
stuff like that. So I don't know, I just I
(03:57):
feel like it's a little extra, you know sometimes, but
everybody different.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
You know, I ain't gonna two day horn.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
You know, this stanionis fight. This is a good one,
you know what I'm saying. It's definitely you know, coming
for the unification. He has the w B A. I
know you mentioned in the past that being undisputed was
something that you know was meaningful to you. Do you
still feel like that? Is that still a goal of
yours to try to collect all the belts in one.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
I mean, that's that's what I'm here, That's what I'm
here to do.
Speaker 5 (04:22):
You know, I'm you know, I'm locked in right now
on Saniorns and uh you know once that once I
win these belts, you know, on on on next Saturday,
I become WBA Champ and Ring Magazine Champ and the
IVF champ, you know, unified lineal Chamber of the World.
You know, Well, we'll see what's what's next to that.
But right now I'm locked in on him, and I
ain't worry about nobody else. I'm zoning on him, and
(04:43):
I'm ready I'm ready.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
I'm ready. I'm ready give give everybody, you know what
they what they asked for.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
I saw he said that this fight almost didn't happen
because I guess his team wasn't pleased with the terms.
But then he was like, I gotta get this fight,
like go back, make it happen. So as far as
the terms of this fight, where were they? Did you
guy have to like, uh, you know, kind of give
in a little for this to happen.
Speaker 5 (05:04):
I mean, on my in, everything was good, So I
understand on his end, you know.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
But it's a big fight for him.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Yeah, it's a big fight for him for sure.
Speaker 5 (05:14):
And I'm definitely glad he took this fight and uh
and giving the fans what they want, you know.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
I'm number one in the division.
Speaker 5 (05:21):
He number two, you know, and and we're gonna get
the fans what they want, you know. That's what they
want to see. They want to see unifications. You want
to see the best fight to us, and that's what
we're doing.
Speaker 4 (05:30):
I know you in the process of trying to make
weight right now, but somebody told me that you are
the person keeping red Lobster open. They said, after you
wait in you always go to Red Lobster. Tell me
about that, like why you love Red Lobster so much?
Speaker 3 (05:42):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (05:43):
That's just a thing that I always did, you know,
and I just kept it going after the winds and
things like that, and I just not never stopped doing it,
you know. And I heard Red Laps they got a
new new owner. Yeah, yeah, I see Blake Griffin doing
commercials and all that for so, you know, we'll see
we'll see that Red Lobster commercial. Yeah, you might see
(06:05):
me on the next drawn you know who knows, you know,
show Red Lobster.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
You know, hopefully I'll see this, you know commerce with me.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
Did you ever do the you can eat? Because that's
why they almost went out of business?
Speaker 3 (06:16):
No, I never did that.
Speaker 5 (06:17):
I always get the same stuff every time, you know,
I know, I know they I know they just dropped
the new like Lobster Fest or something like that, and
they got like they got like a lobster rules and
a bunch of lobster stuff.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
So I'll be seeing all that stuff right now.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
You get boots, what's your order?
Speaker 5 (06:32):
I can't really say because it's gonna sound crazy like
everybody like what I'll head to tell you on.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
The side, and Atlantic City is almost like being at
home too, So that's gonna be a good feeling. How
many people hitting you up from Philly trying to come
to the fight?
Speaker 5 (06:47):
I mean a lot of people definitely hit me up,
you know, a lot of celebrities, a lot of you know,
fam members, things like that. But I'm letting my team
handle that right now at the moment, and I'm do
all damn, I'm lock then on what I got in
front of me. And yeah that's about it. You know,
I got god stay focused. You know, I can't no
outside distractions.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Does it bother you hearing all these critiques of people
are saying, oh, you know his defense and I know
you said, no matter what, people are going to always
have something to say and somepe some type of critique
getting found your feet all twelve rounds. You know, they
always got something to say. So when it comes to that, like,
what's the approach that you're taking out? Because the other
thing that people want is a really exciting fight, right.
(07:25):
They don't necessarily want to see things being played too safe.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Right you know?
Speaker 5 (07:30):
Yeah, the fans they want to they want to see
a little bit of everything, you know, And I feel like,
you know, I feel like I do that. But yeah,
at the end of the day, like I said, I'm
not worried about what they got going on, what they're
saying about me and things like that. You know, it's
actually motivation, you know, to shut them up, you know,
and things like that.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
And that's that's it. That's really it for real.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
Like I know you're focused on Stanionis that's what's coming up.
Brian Norman Junior just had a fight last week, you
know what I'm saying. Uh, he's been somebody that's you know,
you guys tried to put a fight together before it
didn't happen. After the fight, he's you know, kind of
been talking speaking your name things like that. Did you
happen to see his fight and if so, what were
your thoughts?
Speaker 5 (08:11):
Uh? Yeah, Like I just said, I'm I'd be lockeding on.
I'm locking on what I got in front of me.
I don't even really watch boxing like that unless it's
like Floyd or my brothers or.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
Like Roy or CP or something like that. But no,
I ain't.
Speaker 5 (08:23):
I didn't see his fighting, and and I ain't like
I said, I ain't worry about none of these guys
outside of what I got going on. I'm locked in
on what's in front of me, you know, at then
Victoria's next next week. You know, we'll see from there,
you know, we'll see what's going now.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
Your dad had said at one point that he thought
maybe you're trying too hard to score a knockout. Uh
is that something that you've had to adjust to? And
do you agree with his assessment?
Speaker 3 (08:49):
Not trying?
Speaker 5 (08:50):
It's just I mean, my last fight, you know, I
just afford a guy that I beat already, I beat
on twelve nothing. It's people don't understand. It's hard to
guys like that. We already didn't want to fight the guy.
But I was forced to fight him because you know,
I made me fight him. Sorry, and the day's box.
I gotta do what I do, fight my minitary. So
that's what I did for my military out victorious still again,
(09:12):
you know, and you know, and then I'm actually glad
I had that fight, you know, another fight with him.
You know, it made me do things a lot smarter.
You know, this can't a lot better, you know. Uh,
And like I said, I'm ready. You know, I can't wait,
you know, I know I keep saying I can't weep,
but I'm really excited.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
I can't wait. I'm gonna I'm gonna show out for sure.
Speaker 4 (09:33):
Did it show you how fickle boxing fans could be,
because obviously after the Karen thing, you know, the Virgil
Ortiz talk started happening. People were coming out saying, you know,
Virgil said he wanted to fight you. That turned into
a whole thing, and then it seemed like you went
from everybody loving Boots to people trying to discredit you
and things like that. Does that make you upset? Just
how the fans can be kind of fair weather? Nah?
Speaker 5 (09:56):
I just like I said, at the end of the day,
tain't said the best. They love you and they age
you like I really don't.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
I don't.
Speaker 5 (10:03):
I don't mean to say I don't care, but I
just I don't. I really don't care about what everybody
got going on, what they're saying and thinking like that.
At the end of the day, you got I said this,
I'm doing what i want to do. You know, I'm
as long as I'm making my family heavy, making making
myself heavy, making myself proude, probably achieving my goals and
doing what I'm doing, I really don't care what nobody else.
(10:25):
You got to say, like real, real, And that's probably
another reason why nobody that's why people like that that
they be talking about me and things like that.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
They don't probably like me because I don't. I don't care,
they don't affect me like I don't care.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
You don't never feel like clapping back when you see
things on social media.
Speaker 5 (10:40):
You don't.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
You ain't never just started to type something and they said,
you know what, I'm not even gonna.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (10:48):
A couple a few times, my people's like, no, I
don't see nothing.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
I'm all right.
Speaker 5 (10:51):
So I at some point I'm like, I got, I
gotta be the bigger person, and I say nothing. And
because I ain't gonna lie, I'm not really too much
of a with a person are talking on the Twitter
and Instagram and all that stuff. But if I seeing
a person and I don't like what you said, I
really might smake you Like I'm not I'm be on
it like and I got That's why I'll be keeping
like certain people around me to make me chill like
(11:13):
that's it, because I if I don't like you, I'm
going I'm going to address what you got, whatever whatever
you're saying.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
I really might smake you right there in there. So
that's it.
Speaker 4 (11:23):
You careful what you're tweeting, Boots, is the moral of
the story.
Speaker 3 (11:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
The people you won't see in real life though usually.
Speaker 5 (11:32):
Yeah, usually, or if you do see it in real life,
Oh you're my favorite fighter, I take a pic. Why
are you just just saying it'd be crazy, Like, I
don't know what people people crazy. You gotta do it's
best for you, though, I ain't gonna lie. Just stay
stay focused, stay stay focused on test in hand. And
like I just said, as long as you make your
family head, be making yourself proud, you know, make everybody
(11:54):
around you eating, that's all that matters.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
But that is Has there ever been a boxer that
didn't get that, like, did it get the ups and
the downs, the criticism. I don't think there's ever been
a time that somebody has said, oh, he shouldn't have
did that fire, or that was weak, or he's ducking
this person. I feel like that's part of what people
say when it comes to this sport.
Speaker 5 (12:12):
Yeah, I mean that's that's another Bison why I don't
care because I come with the sport like and I'm
not trying to sound like a broken record. But like
Tink said, the best they love you, then they hate you,
and they love you again. And that's real, right they
that's how it goes, you know, That's exactly how I go.
And then after this performance next year, they're gonna be like,
they're gonna be loving me again. You know.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
It's it's crazy like but I mean it's boxing, you know.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
Speaking speaking of Tank, I saw Clarissa Shield say that
she felt like he needed to get like some therapy
because she feels like things that's going on in his
personal life might affect him in the ring. How do
you put all that stuff to decide and go fight
when you have things that's going on in your personal life?
Speaker 1 (12:53):
What's your method?
Speaker 2 (12:54):
And have you ever said I need to do some
therapy too because I don't want to have distractions.
Speaker 5 (13:00):
I mean, it's definitely I can say this. It's definitely
hard sometimes when you having like rough camps and things
like that, people don't know what you're going through going
through during camp. Nobody asks, nobody see how you feel
and that stuff, so people don't know.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
But yeah, some people may need it.
Speaker 5 (13:19):
May need therapy, some people may not, you know, And
well me, I just The best thing I did this camp.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
Will stay off the internet. Like I post like to
promote the.
Speaker 5 (13:28):
Fight and things like that, and I get right off,
like not worry about with nobody tweeting or things like that.
Whatever I post, I get on, get on, post, get off,
and I just go back to like playing the game.
Well not I'm not playing the game right now, but
because I getting too.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
Close to the fight.
Speaker 5 (13:42):
But I do like my little crossword puzzles to doco
you know, uh color a little bit.
Speaker 3 (13:48):
Try to keep my mind.
Speaker 5 (13:49):
Off of like like the negativity on social media, like
that's that's bad energy. So that's what I've been doing reading,
you know, trying to stay on my word and stuff
like that.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
That's about it. You know, make sure my farther is
is good. That's it. You know.
Speaker 5 (14:02):
I'm just trying to keep my head level, you know, Steve,
Steve focused, no outside distraction.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
That's that's what I've been doing this camp.
Speaker 4 (14:09):
Obviously, Boots, when you when you come out, man, it's
always a thing, right like you know your walkouts, there's
always something special. If you had the unlimited budget, like
Eddie Hearn said, I here's the check, go get an
artist to walk you out, Who are you choose?
Speaker 5 (14:23):
Oh, I gotta do somebody that nobody did before, like Bece.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
That was crazy.
Speaker 5 (14:32):
Bet was a while, like what song are even walking?
D I'm kidding No, I ain't gonna lie.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
I would do Future. He never he never walked on nobody.
You know. He a big time, big time person.
Speaker 5 (14:46):
Future will definitely be one of the top guys on
my list because nobody walked out with him. I'm trying,
uh r, I p d m X and DMX is
still allowed to try.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
To get home.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
That's a move right there.
Speaker 5 (14:58):
Yeah, that's one of us, one of my one of
my favorite old school you know ravers, you know from
back in the day.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
D MX. Uh, I ain't gonna lie.
Speaker 5 (15:07):
I would I would mess with fifty two. I would
let fifty walk me out for sure.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
Uh you know, I got it. It's a few people
all let walking out, you know, for sure. Probably a
little baby too, you know, things like that.
Speaker 1 (15:19):
I could see that.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
I wonder who's gonna be out there on Saturday next Saturday.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
I don't know. Y'all got stay tuned.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
You haven't locked in though, of course, right.
Speaker 3 (15:27):
Yeah, we're working on it right now. You're working on
right now.
Speaker 5 (15:29):
Hopefully you know, everything goes through and uh, you know
it's gonna be you know, head a crowd.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Jumping because that's for realess the tone, like, the one
thing we want to watch is who is walking this
person out?
Speaker 3 (15:40):
Is you gotta you gotta have it. You gotta be
entertaining inside the ringing outside the ring.
Speaker 5 (15:47):
You know, you gotta have that that fan base, and uh,
you know people want to like you just say, people
want to see who you're walking out with and things
like that. So that make him tune into the fight
as well, so you know he's stay tuned come uh
next Saturday.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
You know, I don't know who knows. It might be
a special guest, might be Beyonce. We put it out.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
There now, listen.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
We know that it's a family affair for you two
with your dad, with your brothers, with boxing, but sometimes
with family things also get like you know, we've seen
it happen with a lot of with other boxers who
work with their family members. So how do you guys
manage to still stay family but also keep the business,
because you know, it's hard to separate family and business
when you have other things going on and there's emotions
(16:27):
involved too.
Speaker 5 (16:29):
Well on this side, it's very very very easy, you
know because it for like, but my family is not
about the money with us, you know, it's making sure
that we all eat regardless no matter what it is,
and making sure we all on point, you know, come
fight night, you know, or even outside of the boxing,
like make sure everybody's on point, making sure everybody situated.
Speaker 3 (16:50):
So it's not no problem business wise, you know.
Speaker 5 (16:55):
Uh, you know with my family, you know, everything everything great,
all right?
Speaker 1 (16:59):
And after this, when what's next? You moving up?
Speaker 5 (17:01):
And wait after there's one you know, not sure, you know,
you know, after at that one, you know, next Sat
of the day, I'm a you know, I'm gonna enjoy
the win, you know, enjoying my my two brand new belts,
and uh, well we'll see from there, you know, I
you know, I give you some answers, uh you know,
after I'm done, you know, enjoying myself.
Speaker 4 (17:21):
Well, just to piggyback off that, and again we're not
looking forward. But obviously there's a couple of new big
names that entered your division, Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia, they're
in that. Does that excite you knowing that there are
new guys, new fresh blood with big names coming to
where you're at.
Speaker 5 (17:37):
Definitely they great fighters, you know, I see that they're
coming up, great fighters, and uh, like I said, I really,
I really don't.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
I'm not trying to sound like a.
Speaker 5 (17:46):
Broken record, but he's focused. I don't care about the
other guys that's coming up, Like I'm locked in on
what's in front of me.
Speaker 4 (17:53):
Last question, I saw that you interviewed Sean excuse me
that you sparred Sean Porter that was one that you
know the end and was talking about that. What's that like?
Man Showan's a guy that's you know, Hall of Famer.
They said, what was that work?
Speaker 3 (18:06):
Like those those you know? That was a blessing?
Speaker 5 (18:09):
You know, you know, you know spar the former you know,
champion hit the division just to see you know pig
this brand series was it?
Speaker 3 (18:18):
And uh it was. It was a great, great experience,
you know, enjoy myself.
Speaker 1 (18:22):
Have you knocked out a Sparring partner this time around?
Speaker 3 (18:25):
And Camp?
Speaker 5 (18:26):
Yeah, we won't talk about sparing. We don't talk well,
you know, I ain't that type of person like I
don't really talk about don't I don't talk about smart
because spying at any day you're working on you're working
on things, and you're trying to better yourself and prepare
yourself for fight night.
Speaker 3 (18:44):
So so yeah, you know, I don't really ain't gonna
speak too much about that, but that was all right.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
Well, listen, we're really looking forward to it. You know,
we are team Boots, so I just want to put
that out there yet again.
Speaker 5 (18:56):
