Speaker 1 (00:01):
Wind Down with Jana Kramer and I'm Heeartradio podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Hey everyone, Tory Spelling here and I am covering for
my friend Jana Kramer today on her episode of unmask Now.
As a former contestant, I was the Unicorn on season one.
I am super excited because it is like family to
me all these seasons to recap last night's show. So
(00:27):
let's jump into the recap. It is semi final week
and everyone cannot wait to see who is making it
to the finale, especially me and my entire family. Okay,
we are here at season thirteen, episode twelve, and the
show opens with our four semi finalists Boogie Woogie, Pearl,
Mad Scientist, Monster, and Coral and they are doing a
(00:49):
group number two the song Handclap by Fits and Tantrums
and it was super fun energetic. It was a great
song choice I thought to open the show with. Brought
a lot of energy immediately taking you into the episode
with a and clap. Okay, So then Nick announces that
(01:10):
the mashups for the night are going to be Boogie
Woogie versus Pearl and Mad Scientists versus Coral. First up
head to head is Boogie Woogie versus Pearl, and so
the clues for Boogie Woogie he performs first was I
am tapping into emotions that have been asleep for way
(01:30):
too long. I am usually a happy, go lucky guy,
but the farther I get here, the more serious I
am becoming. I am tapping into emotions that have been
asleep for way too long. What are they? What's going
on tonight? I am coming with an up tempo song
to bring the power of boogie Woogie. Okay, And the
(01:52):
song was Maps by Maroon five. So Boogie Woogie performs
with his dancers that are all in black suits, covered
faces with big black fjoras, and they're all carrying different
traffic signs like you know, go one way or yield.
And the dancers came out of the tunnel with light up,
yellow rimmed spinning umbrellas, and there was this really cool
(02:14):
aerial view of them twirling with him right in the middle.
And he ended it on this amazing voice run. So
the judges, you know, all had their comments, they had
their chat. So Rita goes first and Rita says, I
am so speechless, and then she made up an awesome word.
You have bed doozled us but Doozled love it. She says,
(02:39):
one of the best openings we have seen. I concur
each contestant tonight reveals a connection to the judges, which
is kind of a cool thing. And how is he
connected to the panel? So Boogie says, Ken, you are
a fan of mine, you are one of my millions
of followers, and maybe at the end of this I
(03:01):
will follow you back. I mean, if I were Ken Jong,
I'd be like, Okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna score this
win and I would go through like all of his
million of followers and that he follows and go through it.
If he's a good detective, he'll do that. Ken, if
you're watching this, you should do that, okay. Ken then
(03:22):
says someone who I follow when he thinks it is
a Ed Sharon, uh oh, you are perfect, happy, go
lucky married man. You look perfect tonight. So he's like
banking that it's Ed, Sharon. He really still should check
all of his follows. Rita says, I have worked with Ed,
and this is not Ed. Sharon. I agree, Rita and
(03:46):
I and she says, I think it could be Kevin Jonas.
I don't think that's a bad one. Could be right
because of the chasing happiness stock and he has kiddos.
Fair fact. Then Jenny says Statue of Liberty was a
clue in the past and married with children. I think
this could be American Idol contestant Justin Guerini. I don't
(04:10):
know if I agree with that. Hm, who do you
guys think it is? Okay, So Clues for Pearl Pearl
now is going to go up against Boogie and Clues
for Pearl are. I am no stranger to fighting for survival.
I can do all genres here and I have kept
the panel spinning in circles, not afraid to blaze a trail.
(04:34):
Blaze a trail, that's a clue. That's a clue. Okay.
Not too many women were doing what she was doing
when she came onto the scene. Uh huh. I started
my own movement and open doors for so many others.
Tonight is about showing Boogie Woogie the door, and it
won't be easy, but I can stand up for myself.
Her song is You Don't Own Me by Leslie Gore
(04:57):
just now. Her previous guesses have been Ethridge, Pat Benatar,
and Madonna. OMG, imagine if Madonna was on the mass singer,
but I digress that would be amazing. Okay. So her performance,
the dancers come out in pink, puffy costumes with pink
masks and puffballs on their hands, sparkly set. So there's pink,
(05:22):
then there's purple. Was noted strained the voice a little
bit on the end of her run, but she's amazing.
Oh my gosh. And these outfits and costumes and masks
are not easy to sing in. Okay. The judges, they said,
Jenny said it was the best of the best. Dane
McCarthy's so kind. Robin says it was sultry and shaggy vocals.
(05:45):
You freestyled the end and added the soul and grit. Amazing,
And Jenny says, just when I thought Boogie Woogie had it,
here you come. So the contestants continue to reveal their
connection to the judges, if any, and the one on
the panel that is connected to Pearl is Jenny, and
Pearl says, not only did we walk the same carpet,
(06:08):
but you also watch me win my award at the AMS.
So there's the Elvis clue. I think it could be
Casey Musgraves, they say, Ken said it could be Martina McBride.
H I wonder if she follows him. Robin Thick says
it can be Ann Wilson from Hearts I Love Heart
(06:30):
due to a previous clue he says of singing with
Dolly Parton. Okay, fair Rita says this could be Natalie
Mains from The Chicks I Love her so much, with
the ex and O board clue to maybe means she
has performed at the Super Bowl. Oh my god, I
hope it's her. And then we go into the audience
(06:51):
voting and Pearl wins. So we go to the second
head to head next and it's Coral versus Mad Scientist Monster.
The clues for Coral, who goes up first is I
am the youngest left in the competition, one of the
youngest ever to get this far. Only thing left to
do is wipe the floor with the crazy old scientist.
(07:15):
Still finding my sea legs in Hollywood has pop Star
Dreams wants to dig deep with an emotional song. The
song was what Was I Made For by Billie Eilish
and the performance, Oh my god, it was so good.
Standing on a round, raised stage in the middle with
(07:37):
butterflies made in lights flapping around her light beams. I
love this whole staging and performance. It was glorious and
so visually pleasing. There's a fiddle player on the stage,
some light choreography, even confetti falls when she sings how
to Be Happy. And the judges were all emotional. They
(07:58):
all had tears, they had chills, they were just outs
like outstand it like mouth the gape, like everyone was
in shock, not shocked, just like she truly brought the
house down. So Coral is connected to Rita and she says,
your franchise and my franchise are going to make sweet
(08:22):
beautiful music next year. Wow. That's like, oh my god. Okay.
Rita says, I'm in a franchise called Descendants and they
are going on tour with zombies. But there's so many
people she wasn't sure who it might be Macdonnelly, Kylie Russell,
maybe Sophia Carson. There's so many so she's not sure.
(08:46):
Ken says, I'm so young too. I think I worked
with them. Oh. Ken always a jokester and a poster.
This could be Peyton List. Jenny says, maybe this could
be Hailey' st Einfeld. She's on a Hawkeye on Disney.
These are all great guesses. I'm here for it. So
(09:06):
next up is the Mad Scientist Monster and the Clues
for Mad Scientists Monster. Hey, I am not that old.
With age comes experience, and I have been training for
this my whole life as an athlete turned singer. I
apply a sports mentality to all of my performances. I
am not just cruising here, I am working. The song
(09:28):
was a bar song, Tipsy by Shabouzi, So this performance
was cool. There's a bunch of cowboys dancing around a
camper like set. He does align dancing with the cowboys
as best as the costume will allow. It's really hard
to dance in these costumes, but I thought it was
a great attempt and then big streamers. At the end
(09:50):
of the performance, Ken said, great song choice, But the
connection is actually with Robin, and he says he has
a Robin connection. Remember that Lucky Duck clue about someone
stealing something from you That was me in twenty thirteen.
Robin's like, oh wait, the lines are blurred that year.
(10:13):
He says, I think this is trace Atkins. Rita says,
what about the charts? Did he steal a spot on
the charts? Can ask what about the costume clue there
is an orange pen in the pocket, so maybe Florida.
Jenny says there's two bees on the name tech, so
Ken says that he thinks it's Billy Ray Cyrus. Rita says, no,
(10:37):
I mean the athlete thing could be maybe a football
in college. I thought maybe body like a back road,
maybe Sam Hunt big hit in twenty thirteen. Then we
go right into the audience voting and bomb mad Scientist
Monster wins. Okay, SmackDown. Then yes, let's get to it.
(10:58):
It was Coral versus Boogie Woogie. Corla is first singing
Suddenly I See by Katie Tunstall walks around and engages
with the audience, which they always love, and Boogie Go
second sings are You going to Be My Girl? By
jet I got to say I dropping to his knees,
good move, good move, solid, and he really performs it.
(11:23):
It was really good and his run at the end amazing.
So the judges say, Ken says, she nailed it, and
Boogie sang one of my favorite songs of all time.
The audience does the biggest vote yet and then it
all stops. Bell starts ringing wait for it. In the
studio and then Lucky Duck comes out and reveals nobody's
(11:47):
getting unmasked tonight and sent home, which I was really
excited about. Uh, so everyone is going to the finale.
The Duck has been breaking this news all season long,
and neither of you are getting unmasked, So go backstage
and you both have a finale to prepare for. So
that was a huge shock that no one was going
(12:08):
home and getting unmasked, which I'm loving that they're all
moving to the finale. Nick Cannon throws to the judges
to see who they think the Duck is. The panel
are like, the Duck stops them and then says they
will get it wrong, so he's going to take his
mask off before they can say it. Robin says, I
(12:29):
think it's Nicholas Cage and then Lucky Duck takes his
mask off and it's Taika and it is Rita's husband.
Plot twist. Oh so good. I love it. Okay, So
that was the semi finals and I am so excited.
I can't wait to see what happens next week in
(12:51):
the finale. But now I'm even more excited because we
have on Edwin McCain, who was un asked last week
as a Nessie the luckness Monster. Let's welcome Edwin McCain.
(13:18):
Welcome to the show, Edwin McCain.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
Hello, thank you so much for having me.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
Oh my gosh, thank you. I'm so excited. I'm so
lucky to be filling in for my friend Janet Kreamer today.
And I get you so in my singer you were
NeSSI and you have You've said that you told your daughter,
but not your sons.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
I did.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
I had to tell terrified. Ever, so you had to
tell her.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
No, I had to.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
Tell her because I was probably I was going to
use her the because we we actually, for whatever reason,
are our silly tiktoks have gone crazy a couple of
times where her embarrassment of.
Speaker 3 (13:57):
Me apparently is what the internet really as.
Speaker 1 (14:01):
And and so I told her about it because I
just had to prepare her for the eventuality of seeing
me in a like mess monster suit on national television.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
You know, I didn't want to just spring that on her.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
And then my sons are terrible secret keepers, so I
had to I had to keep that from them.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
What was their reaction when you were in mass I don't.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
Know that they even pulled themselves away from the video
game long enough to care.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
But my middle son actually was kind of funny. He
he sent me some there was some ranking meme on
Reddit because he knows all the you know, the Reddit
sub stack.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
World that I don't know, like where all the kids.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
Congregate and say the things that the parents can't find
out about.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
Oh is that the place? Okay, thank you?
Speaker 3 (14:58):
I think so. I think it's Reddit and Stack. I
don't know. I don't I don't participate it.
Speaker 1 (15:03):
I mean, if it wasn't for the pandemic, I wouldn't
have ever gotten on TikTok and I and that's really
the only social media platform that I engage.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
And I just I love TikTok. I don't know why,
I just I really do.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
So wait, what did they say on Reddit?
Speaker 3 (15:21):
I was, I was.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
No, okay, there's like a top tier and then NeSSI
was on the next level, and then there.
Speaker 3 (15:32):
Was like four or five under that.
Speaker 1 (15:34):
So your mid I was, I was, I was upper
mid is what? And the thing is, though I don't
really know it. You know, I never trusted because he
could have it could have been like most hated. And
he didn't really tell me. He just said, look, you're
up near the top.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Oh see. My kids would be honest, they would screenshot
it and send it to me, like what they're saying
about you did you? Did you pick se?
Speaker 1 (16:03):
No?
Speaker 3 (16:03):
I was? I was? I know, no, no, no, I
listen honestly, I could. I barely had time.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
It was really bizarre because the way my schedule was,
it was going to be close whether I could even
do this show. And I had to move some things around,
and so I literally I didn't even you know, most
people got out there and did fittings and did all
this stuff.
Speaker 3 (16:26):
I literally I had to.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
Go to a to a men's store in Greenville where
I live and get them to measure me.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
With all these really specific measurements.
Speaker 1 (16:35):
And without telling them why, and and and the guy,
the tailor at this shop was like, what come on, bro,
Like what's this about? And and I was like I
had to make up some story, Like I told him I.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
Was goingplayer or something.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
I was going to some charity ball and they were
building it. Yeah it was yeah, I was I was
going to some furry convention, right and yeah, and so yeah,
but I walked into the whole messy thing. But I
have to say this and.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
All props, no pun intended to the costumers and the designers.
Speaker 3 (17:12):
They did such a great job, and they were so
creative and so thorough and everybody I worked with.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
I just can't stay enough nice things about them, because
they have a really hard job. First of all, they
got to come up with concepts and do all this stuff,
and then they got to make these costumes that big
dumb rednecks like me could jump around in.
Speaker 3 (17:33):
And it was great. I mean, it worked out perfectly.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
It's a brilliant costume. And I was on season one
a massinger. I was the Unicorn, so I know how
it's progressed a long way. But I mean, your costume
was not an easy one.
Speaker 3 (17:51):
No, it was a thousands.
Speaker 2 (17:53):
Could you see you can't see?
Speaker 1 (17:55):
No, there was a screen right in front of my
face and it didn't read on camera so I can
see out of it.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
It was just it was screens like this. It's like,
it's not well.
Speaker 1 (18:07):
I had I had some patting where I could lean
my face up to it and then put the microphone
close enough to where I could sing into the mic.
Speaker 3 (18:16):
And you know, in retrospect, I probably should have warned a.
Speaker 1 (18:19):
Headset because then I could have flailed my little lizard
arms more for effect.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
But it was you know, live and learn. I don't
know that I'll ever get another chance to do something
like that, so I wasn't about to miss it.
Speaker 2 (18:33):
You know they have mass singers all over the world.
Speaker 1 (18:36):
Oh well, then sign me up, because I'll do that
again in a second.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
Right, it's such a special I mean, first of all,
like I remember doing it, and I in hindsight was like,
oh my gosh, some people had these costumes where they
could just move and dance and do everything, because I mean,
you're a legendary singer. But I I wish I could
have moved more so I could distract from my singing.
But but yeah, like props to how hot was it?
Speaker 1 (19:04):
It was a thousand degrees in there, and I was
wearing a vest with with ice packs in it.
Speaker 3 (19:11):
And before I forget this, you know you and I
actually have an indirect history.
Speaker 1 (19:17):
I was, I feel like I owe your whole family
and apology because I feel like I might have cursed
Malibu Shores. My band appeared on Malibu Shores, and I
think it was canceled about half an hour later.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
Edwin McCain, I hate to burst your bubble. It wasn't you.
But if it feels better to take credit for that,
you do you boo.
Speaker 3 (19:48):
I just had to bring that up. It's such a
long time ago. It was so bizarre.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
Oh my gosh, that's so funny. How did I not
remember that? I remember everything in my dad shows?
Speaker 3 (19:59):
You would? I mean, it was so it was such
a random thing, and and.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
We we were on a string there where Atlantic kept
putting us in these shows that would like very quickly
be off the air right after our appearance.
Speaker 3 (20:16):
And I was like, man, we're going to get a
bad rep for this. We got.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
Well, I wish you had been on nine O two one. Oh,
it was similar timing. I don't know that if we
did I mean the Peach pet No, I wish you were.
Speaker 3 (20:40):
We did the peach Pit. We did play the peach Pit.
We did it. We were there, Yes, we were on there.
I remember that. That was what led to Malibu Shores.
Speaker 1 (20:52):
Yeah, we did all of them. Yeah, we did all
of it. I mean we were on for a minute there.
We were on everything. Donnie and Marie and Reads and
Kathy lay all that stuff.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
Well, I owe you an apology. I'm so sorry. We're
doing a rewatch podcast on iHeart as well. And we
are on season seven, so you haven't been on yet,
so you must.
Speaker 3 (21:13):
Be you're either you got a long way to go.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
Okay, can we talk about the beat of sweat that
dripped down your head?
Speaker 3 (21:22):
It was crazy.
Speaker 2 (21:23):
It went to your foot, did it? Did it go
through your butt crack on the way down?
Speaker 1 (21:27):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (21:27):
I fell to start going and I was like, Wow,
it's gonna make it. It's gonna make it. Way where
am I in the song? I mean, it's bad enough
to be as a d d as I am, but
then but then.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
Also to be in a dinosaur suit singing in a
com I mean a competition.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
You know it was. I'll tell you this though, it's kind.
Speaker 1 (21:48):
Of the perfect storm for somebody like me because it
was always different.
Speaker 3 (21:54):
It was it was a new adventure every day. I mean,
if that's the that's the way I like it. So, man,
what a.
Speaker 4 (22:04):
Wait?
Speaker 2 (22:05):
But so I watched. You didn't mess up?
Speaker 3 (22:08):
No, No I didn't.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
Oh you just got distracted, so you knew, but no
one knew.
Speaker 3 (22:13):
No.
Speaker 1 (22:13):
I'd like so in my gigs, like I've been playing
for thirty five years, and I will I'll zone out
sometimes and be playing the show, but my mind will
be somewhere else, and then I'll come back to him.
Go wait a second, where am I? And I'm looking around.
I'm like, I must not have made a mistake, all right,
I guess we're doing okay?
Speaker 3 (22:33):
And uh, yeah, it's you know, it's it's a curse really.
Speaker 2 (22:39):
Or a blessing. Wow, that is fascinating. I would never
know that.
Speaker 1 (22:44):
I'll be I can be a million miles away in
a day dream in the middle of a gig, and
it's just you're just just autopilot.
Speaker 2 (22:52):
Do you ever get nervous after all these years.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
Yeah, I get nervous.
Speaker 1 (22:58):
I get nervous for about forty five seconds right before
I go on. And I've always said, if you don't
get a little bit nervous right before you go on,
no matter what it is, it means you've stopped caring
about it.
Speaker 3 (23:13):
And I love it. I love playing. I'm just I'm
so blessed to be able to do this. And I
still get a little.
Speaker 1 (23:20):
Nervous before every show, especially, I'll tell you this, especially
the ones like if I get invited to sing at
a wedding or a funeral or some kind of really.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
Especially these one off situations where you've just got to
get it right. I mean there's a lot of things.
Speaker 2 (23:39):
Yeah, yeah, no, those are the ones for sure, and
mass singer like, that's a whole different experience. So like
right before you went out, yeah, I think the first
different nerves.
Speaker 3 (23:53):
The first song we did was rock Saying, and I
got real nervous walking out there for the first time.
Speaker 1 (23:59):
So I was like, holy make And to be fair,
it's the first time I've really been re engaged with
the larger industry, like back in the mix with the
with the real entertainment industry, because I've been independent, been
back to being independent for almost it's close to twenty
years now, and so everything I've been doing this whole
(24:22):
time has just been really just up to me and
laid back.
Speaker 3 (24:26):
And then all of a sudden, I was sort of
back in this real serious situation where you know, this
is a national television and so for half a second
I kind of went and then you always just fall
back on, you know, have fun. What are we doing?
Speaker 1 (24:44):
I mean, nobody's waiting on me to I mean, I'm
not a heart surgeon, so really it's fine.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
Are you competitive?
Speaker 3 (24:52):
I am a little bit, there's a little fighter in me.
I mean, I'll say I didn't want to get eliminated.
I'll tell you that I wanted to go all the way.
But after hearing Boogie Woogie, whoever that is, whoever's in
that mask is.
Speaker 2 (25:09):
Do you have a prediction who's in that mask?
Speaker 1 (25:11):
If Boogie Woogie doesn't win, I'll be shocked, because whoever's
in that mask can sing.
Speaker 2 (25:17):
Whoever you have, you must have a feeling, not a
single clue.
Speaker 5 (25:21):
But you also got to remember too, because I'm probably
the oldest person on this seaton in this season, right,
gotta be right, Like I'm from a different I'm.
Speaker 1 (25:34):
Gen X, So I whoever this is, whoever Boogie Woogie is,
probably is twenty or in his twenties.
Speaker 3 (25:42):
So I don't know.
Speaker 1 (25:44):
I mean, I'm kind of I'm kind of that old
krusty dude that listens to the same fifteen records.
Speaker 3 (25:50):
All the time. I don't know who anybody is. I
had to.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
Learn, like your fifteen year old tells you, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (25:58):
She actually turns me on the music, and then again
she likes she's She took me to see the Arctic
monkeys and they're not new, but they were really good.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
Yeah, they were new to me. I was like, huh.
Speaker 1 (26:09):
I was really proud of her the other day because
I caught her listening to, you know, music that even
her friends aren't really listening to.
Speaker 3 (26:17):
So she's got good taste in music.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
And to all her friends are they like, oh my god,
your dad. Like we're in different spaces. But I know,
my kids like, I'm not cool until one of their
friends is like, oh my god, your mom is in this,
and then all of a sudden, they like, are cool. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:34):
Her friends call me Edwin and they think I'm hilarious
because I'm not the typical I'm not the typical.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
Dad, the dad dad.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
I'm kind of the like for my sons. My sons
have already graduated high school. My sons all their friends
have my phone number just because my standing order was,
you know, if you guys get in any kind of trouble,
just call me and I'll come and help sort it
out before you yeah, before you call your parents.
Speaker 3 (27:07):
Let's just let me. Let me get there and see
what I can do to sort things out. Because I'm
also the sober guy too.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
So I've been sober for sixteen years and and so
I'm sort of that's that's sort of my living amends
to try to make sure that teenagers don't try drunk,
and you know, just all the things.
Speaker 2 (27:25):
Absolutely so Robin Thick, Robin Thick knew it was you.
I like you first.
Speaker 3 (27:31):
I was like, nobody's ever going to guess me because
I've been out of the mix for so long.
Speaker 2 (27:34):
I know the mix. You're legendary.
Speaker 3 (27:36):
Yeah, Robin would have known the song, and the song
is the song is so much bigger than my.
Speaker 1 (27:43):
Uh pr you know, everybody knows the song, and I
still have people come and go, I didn't know that
was you that sings that song, and that's probably my fault,
but it's worked in my favor for a long time.
I think there's.
Speaker 3 (28:00):
Still a discovery process happening. You know, people are.
Speaker 2 (28:03):
Every generation is discovering it on a different like yeah,
and the kids will be like, I'll say sometimes like,
how do you know that song that's from my generation?
Like we listened to that in the nineties, and they'll
be like, oh, it's on TikTok Now it's a meme
or whatever. They say, it's a clip YouTube, and it's
like it's wild. I mean, it's kind of cool. That's
(28:23):
how they're learning about things that were cool to us.
Not that you've ever gone out of style. I'm just
saying I don't think I ever was in style.
Speaker 3 (28:33):
So that was the thing that like, we just weren't.
We were never the cool band, right, so we like
and everybody in my band won't mind me saying.
Speaker 2 (28:41):
My favorite love song all the time. What do you
mean you're not?
Speaker 4 (28:45):
It's like there were you know what I'm saying, Like
the cool bands, like the Smashing Pumpkins and you know,
nine It's Nails and like all those bands in the
nineties that were they were cool.
Speaker 1 (28:56):
Right, like Soundgarden and Pearl Jam and they like, those
guys were cool.
Speaker 3 (29:00):
And we were sort of this we we we had
that that.
Speaker 1 (29:03):
Moment with a with a song that was sort of
bigger than we were, and I wasn't getting in the.
Speaker 3 (29:09):
Way of that, and and it was it was just
like I don't know how to do. I don't know
how to describe it.
Speaker 1 (29:15):
We just never really had that rep for being because
we didn't really fit in indie world and we didn't
really fit in pop world, and and so and before that,
before that, we were playing with the Alman brothers and like.
Speaker 3 (29:30):
Bob Weird, and we were kind of part of a
jam band culture.
Speaker 1 (29:34):
And and as soon as you have a radio hit,
you get ejected from that world because you're not allowed
to be in that world anymore, just ask John Popper and.
Speaker 3 (29:44):
And so we weren't in our little jam band world anymore.
Where do we fit? And I'll remember I remember we
were playing these big pop radio festivals where everybody goes
on and plays three songs, and everybody that was there
was play into tracks, which is what you would what
you should do if if you're playing with that many
(30:07):
bands and that many and we were like horrified at
the idea of that.
Speaker 1 (30:12):
And I mean Sinaia Twayne was on this villa, Mariah
Carey instinct, like all the biggest names. And then you know,
in the middle of this thing, we would we refuse
to play the tracks. And so where we had we
pushed all our gear out on stage, like Hammond Organs
and amps and all this.
Speaker 3 (30:32):
I mean the sound company was literally like what the hell, bro.
Speaker 1 (30:37):
And look at I look back on that and laugh
because that perfectly encapsulates how clueless we were about that
side of the industry.
Speaker 3 (30:46):
Like once you get into the pop side. It doesn't matter,
like that stuff doesn't matter, Like you just need to
go out there and be you know, wear the clothes,
sing your song and move out of the way.
Speaker 1 (30:59):
But because you know Mariah is going to be on
and you know what I mean, that's that was the point.
We had so many interesting moments.
Speaker 2 (31:10):
It's an ego check, like it's humbling and you just
got to roll with it.
Speaker 3 (31:14):
Yeah, you know, and yeah, it doesn't matter. Nobody cares
that you have integrity of playing live. I mean, nobody
cares about it, you know. But we were like, well
it matters to us, so.
Speaker 2 (31:27):
Well, I gotta tell you I'll be still one of
my favorite songs. And I'll tell you one thing. Back then,
I wasn't bawling my eyes out into a pint of
Rocky Road over the Smashing Pumpkins. It was you, Okay,
Like you got me through so much heartbreak and love.
(31:49):
And every time I hear that song it still makes
me feel so happy, and I know the whole world
feels that way. And wait, you're about to go on
the US tour with Train.
Speaker 3 (32:00):
That we're going out with Train this summer.
Speaker 1 (32:03):
I've known Pat a long time, actually, I'll tell somebody
the story. The other day, I had an opportunity to
go to the Playboy Mansion or go sit in with Train,
and I chose to go sit in with Train. And
I've always told Pat that, I was like, I picked
you over the Playboy Mansion.
Speaker 2 (32:25):
Wow, you missed out on the grotto.
Speaker 3 (32:28):
Well, I don't you know.
Speaker 1 (32:30):
I honestly, curiosity would have been the only reason. I
mean honestly just from a like just I think I
find that that place is. I think it would be
like a historic like going to Thomas Jefferson's house, Like
it was such a weird moment in time, right, it's like.
Speaker 2 (32:49):
Going to the White House or going to the Playboy Mansion.
You're like, yes, I want to try one, like.
Speaker 1 (32:54):
This is the this was, this was when, this was
when the seventies were was off the right here, right
at the epicenter, right bizarre.
Speaker 2 (33:04):
Oh my gosh. Well, I adore you, and I adore train.
I would love to come.
Speaker 3 (33:08):
Well, you're welcome to you.
Speaker 2 (33:10):
You're not asking for free tickets or anything.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
Come on, we'll play. I'll put you on the list.
I'll put you on trains list.
Speaker 2 (33:17):
Oh my gosh, Oh my goodness. And so Wednesday coming up,
you're going to be at the Troubadour. What is that party?
Speaker 1 (33:24):
Well, we're doing like a we just want to do
a watch party for it'll be the final episode of
The Mass Singer. And then all all of our friends
are coming out, like Kevin Crownin from Mario and I
think Brett Michaels is going to come out, and we've
got you know, Don Felder, and we're going to play
a bunch of tunes with them and then play a
(33:45):
bunch of our songs. We're going to watch the last
the last episode of The Mass Singer and then get
up and have a big jam and give all the
money to the La Fire Charities.
Speaker 2 (33:55):
Amazing, Oh my gosh, amazing. Can I be greedy and
come to that too?
Speaker 3 (33:59):
I would love to have you there, please please.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
So how can people get tickets to that?
Speaker 3 (34:05):
Just call the Throubidour or just go to edwin dot com.
Speaker 2 (34:08):
Perfect. Thank you, my friend. This has been a pleasure.
Speaker 3 (34:13):
It's really nice to reconnect.
Speaker 2 (34:15):
Yes, oh my goodness. Now now I have to go
back and watch an Aisle torow and see.
Speaker 1 (34:20):
Gosh, it's it's gotta be one of the last seasons
it's gotta be.
Speaker 3 (34:25):
Okay, I'm not ninety seven ninety eight somewhere around and there.
Speaker 2 (34:30):
Ninety seven ninety eight, so like two years before it ends,
so like eighth season. Okay, I'm on it and I
hope to see you soon. And you were wonderful on
the Mass singer. Oh my god. They literally have them
all over the world, Australia, Spain, Paris, like we suld Yeah,
we all make it all of course, they all want you.
Speaker 3 (34:52):
Yeah, we should, we should, we should make a laugh
of all them. Yeah, I'm in all right.
Speaker 2 (34:57):
Well, thank you, have a great day.
Speaker 3 (35:00):
I'll see you soon.
Speaker 2 (35:02):
Thanks.
Speaker 3 (35:11):
Hm.
