On this episode of the Off the Edge with Cam Jordan podcast, Cam is joined by Steelers great and Super Bowl champion Lamarr Woodley for a wide-ranging conversation. LaMarr shares why he was a Steelers fan before he even put on the black and yellow, the rivalries that fueled Pittsburgh during his career. He also gives us the inside story of the two game-changing plays he was part of in Super Bowl XLIII. LaMarr and Cam break down everything from turf vs. grass debates to the rise of mobile QBs to the leadership of Mike Tomlin. Woodley also opens up about his transition into media, the creation of his Area 56 Entertainment, and his recent journey through film school as he builds his post-football career.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
Here we go off the edge with me your host,
Cam Jordan. I'm Cam Jordan, and I'm here to tell
you we've got work to do, but we'll get into
that later. I just want to say thank you for
tuning in, tapping in with the pod. I'm super excited
to have one of my OG's, a big Dog, a
guest of mine, a man who's won a Super Bowl,
man who's been a pass rusher in the NFL, not

(00:27):
only with the Steelers for a number of years, but
the Raiders and the Cars. And I want to talk
about that because you know, the Cars is a hometown team,
but the ultimate pro, a Pro Bowler, a Super Bowl champion,
an All Pro.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
I mean, he did so much in between the lines.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
After he got out the field, he sort of took
a new approach to life.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
More to talk about it. Welcome in my dog, Og
Big Wood Lamar Woodley.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
It's time for this week's Driving for Success Conversation, presented
by Toyota.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Let's go places. Hey, I appreciate you having me on here.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
Man, know I've been I've been watching your career from
the beginning, you coming to the football camps and just
saying you're doing your TV thing you've been You've been
doing a lot of great things all in off the
field in the community as well, so you know, people
recognize that.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
I appreciate that.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
Yeah, you had me, uh had me come up to
the camp and it's Sag nasty, big good old Sag
and mischif back whether at twenty eleven, I appreciate you know,
you put me on game early, bro, and then you
sort of, you know, went off the races.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Of course, you know, we could talk about everything that happens.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
But how how tuned are you into into football now
that you know your quote unquote retired and you really
got this avenue behind the lens.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
But do you still watch you still watch the Steelers?
Who do you root for?

Speaker 3 (01:45):
You know, I was, I wasn't still a family fo
I got drafted there. So luckily, when I got drafted there,
it was truly a blessing. And I try to watch
it here and then, but it's it's tough watching the game.
I'm not really into football as much as I used to.
I guess I'm more vanto like that, thinking about the
players transition off the field. But yesterday I took time

(02:06):
to watch that game when Pittsburgh played in Minnesota.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
I did watch that.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
Good old Aaron Rodgers tossing that tatort forty two years old,
spinning that that he saw. You saw he wanted no
parts of that touch push.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
He wanted no parts of that. But I'll tell you what.
I think.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
It was maybe thirty nine and Aaron Robbers couldn't find
nobody to throw it to, and he took off running.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
I was a bit gig down once you got the
first down, and what happened.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Somebody him ball came out and luckily that offense alignment
was there to retrieve the ball.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
But forty won forty.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
Two and his forties. You know what, but he's still
showing that he's willing. You know what I'm saying, He's
still he's still willing. He's like, yo, I only got one.
Some boy clearly wants another one. And and he's in
the AFC, where the AFC is super strong. When you
got teams you know, like the like the Bills, like
the Chiefs, you know, you got perimeter. I mean, actually
it's sort of white open after that. You probably just

(03:03):
got the Bills right now.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
Yeah, man, the big, the big, the Bills as a
team that you don't want to go and play in
in January. It gets cold out there in Buffalo, and
those fans are gonna be out there, and as you've
seen some of the years that they had to cancel
and move some games because of the slow So I
wouldn't want the Bills to have home field advantage in
that winter time. And luckily y'all do have to go

(03:26):
in there and play them in the December of January.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Now get them early, get them early. I mean this
this idea of the Steelers, right you say, you say
you're what four hours away from from the Steelers and
being in Detroit.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
Oh, yeah, about three and a half four hours away
by the hour flight, so.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
I'm close to home. Both of my homes are here. Gross.
Just the idea of snow is just gross to me.
Dog Like, I don't I.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
Don't get how you could be like, you know what,
this is home and it's snowing outside.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
You're like, I gotta go shovel a driveway. That's just ridiculous.
Were you when you're born here? You tire life? You know.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
I went to the University of Michigan, got drafted the
Pittsburgh so I've pretty much.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Been in cold my entire life. It's only a couple
of months of it.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
And after that, you know, when that spring and that
summertime come, you really appreciate it because you don't see that, right.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
You actually, you truly appreciate every hot day. I expect
hot days to be my norm, and the things below
thirty five, I'm sort of ticked off, But that'd been saying,
you know, did you did you check out the Aaron
Rodgers former team, the Packers and Cowboys, good old Michael
Parsons back to you know, back playing against Dallas and

(04:38):
they end up in a tie overtime.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
I was looking forward to that game. Cam, I'm gonna
tell you what.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
I was looking forward to the game because I was
looking at who was going to get the last land, y'all.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
That's the only reason I was looking at it. Everybody
had any reasons. Of course.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
It was a big time historical game, the team to
historical teams playing against it other, you know, Sunday night football.
Everybody's watching, everybody seeing what happened early on this year
between Dallas and Parsa. So I was like, man, I
can't wait to see that post game reaction, Like he said,
Jerry Jones, who's gonna get.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
The last live no doubt nobody. Answer is nobody.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
No, the last couple of seconds of overtime. Jordan, you know,
Jordan Love sort of has a possibility to win the game,
and and they.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
Go kick a field goal. Well that started. Don't be
anti climatic. I guess this thing is not scripted.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
It's not script You know, as a player you really
hate to see overtime, but as a fan watching the
game out of the player, it was funny.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
Wait, wait, why why why do you hate overtime? I
love overtime. That's when the fed it, I mean, the
big old officer line. Mean they got nothing left in
the tank.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
I pray upon those days. Let me take the over,
Let me take you over time back and say, lo,
tie games. That's what I mean. No, no tige and
a competitive as as competitors.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
I don't want to know who if we were just
okay enough to tie forty points on the board each way, No,
we got to figure this out. He's gotta it's got
to be a death turn somewhere in there, like just
all right, fine, go back to makers, takers, you score
or score again?

Speaker 3 (06:22):
It call it dug and don'ts me to get your
back later on in the season when you might need
that wing to get into the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
And this switch up, no doubt, no, especially they're both
NFC NFC teams. I mean, yeah, that that that irritate
the heck ad me. Hey, let me let me ask
you this, you know, especially with everything that's going on
this age old argument turf for grass. Of course, you
you know, you would were to Pittsburgh for a number

(06:49):
of years, so you know what with grass is you
had the worst uh stadium in America with the with
the old Raiders Stadium and then the Cardinals who had
you know grass, what do you prefer?

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Well, you know it apaardson on the time of the year,
because the thing about when we played in Pittsburgh, you
had three different teams going November playing on that field.
You know, we would have home games, pitt Panthers would
have games, and then there would be some high school
city championship games played on there. So pretty much there
will be no grass. It was just all dorning and
they would just place some type of green dye on

(07:23):
the field. And so then if we did go to Baltimore,
whatever we got did kind of appreciate playing on the
turf a little bit because our field was just beat up.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
So it's a little bit of both. I enjoyed a
little bit of both.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
I don't mind taking off those treats and getting those
gym shoes and going out there playing a little bit.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
You just cowboys packered me, Bro, you just hit me
with a tie. I can see. No.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
I'm here for turf. I can practice in grass, but
game day I want the best footing. I'm tired of
seeing people slip and fall and in the packers at
Pittsburgh and you know you remember playing again at Oracle,
you know the terrible last stadium over there in Oakland.
Before before the in to Vegas, I sprayed my ACL.

(08:13):
I don't have nothing positive say about that thing. I
had one foot on dirt, one foot on grass, and
my leg split like I was on skis.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
And I say, yo, this.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
Is like I had an ACL or MCL spray in
my rookie year because of that field.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Hate that field. Like grass.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
Go ahead, bro, Grass is for Office of Linemen. They
love grass because it slows everybody down. I'm trying to
see your best eleven versus my best eleven any given
Sunday and turf allows me to do so. Now, granted
it's not the met Life turf, and I think that's
still like the last remnants of Mestro, like the Astro
turf that met Life needs to be updated. This is
twenty twenty five. There's all types of better synthetic turf

(08:51):
out there.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
Do better.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
And going back to what you're saying about the Oakland Raders,
you know they had it was a baseball of forer you.
So you get a little bit of both, like right
right there in the middle. So I definitely experienced that
when I trying to attack an offensive linement and you
just on dirt, just sliding back and he's getting the
best of year sliding.

Speaker 1 (09:11):
You go to plant and your foot is under out
from underneath you like, bro, but even you go, you
go grass man, it don't matter you you travel over
grass and you try, you try and really dig in
your cleats. You gotta have like different configurations of your cleats.
They're like, oh, you got to go two half inches
and one three quarters, so you gotta have a like, bro,
I'm just trying to play my best, like.

Speaker 2 (09:32):
You see see me when I'm at my best, You know.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
You gotta go play in Chicago Soldier Field, Saudi ass
field like this three inch long grass, like they did
this on purpose.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
Because they really, they really are mid. So they're trying
to even the playfield. And I get it.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
Home field advantage. You everybody has to have the thing.
But meet me on a good turf, you know, since
sadly say, Buffalo solid turf, super out daddy stadium, solid turf,
very amicable face, solid turf. And I'm okay with that.
See see me when you see.

Speaker 3 (10:04):
Me, dare you didn't got used to playing in that
nice dome, control weather environment. You look out the window, rains, snow,
no matter what. Y'all't even get slow. You know it's
gonna be a great day.

Speaker 2 (10:16):
It's gonna be it's gonna be perfect condition.

Speaker 1 (10:18):
I'm again, I'm trying to see what your quote unquote
athletic fat guy, your office alignment is go trying to do.
I'll try to see your quarterback in the backfield. And
at this point I'm not even worried about office of
alignment because I really am more worried about mobile quarterbacks.
This transition of you know, your tail end of you
plane versus where quarterbacks are now now today.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
An mobile quarterback really doesn't exist. A slow quarterback is
who Aaron Rodgers, who can get shifty? Matthew Stafford who
wants to be a pocket quarterback but he can still slide.
There's no such thing as m mobile quarterbacks. The long
gone are the days of Ben Roethlisberger, Tom.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
Rady of you know, Drew Brees, you know the hey,
I run a five, Oh so I can maybe possibly
outrun a nose tackle.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
No, no, Now.

Speaker 1 (11:10):
You got guys like Pat Mahomes, you know, Lamar Jackson,
Josh Allen, Jordan Love, Baker Mayfield. There's no name that
you can't put a Spencer Ratler. There's no name you
can't put out there that isn't a four eight or
better guy.

Speaker 3 (11:25):
Right, I can't let me ask you a question now,
with those new mobile quarterbacks, how does that change? Like
the preparation throughout the week, Is it more complicated or
is more separate?

Speaker 2 (11:35):
Five? You say complicated? Because now, of course I want
to know you know what his you know what is?

Speaker 1 (11:41):
I gotta hear his snapcounts, see if he has one
of those masterful snapcounts. I gotta know where he likes to,
you know, hike the ball to where he likes to
escape at. And that's always been the biggest thing, right
Like uh, with with those big six', five you, know tower,
quarterbacks you know where they.

Speaker 2 (11:54):
Are with these smaller you, Know Kyler murray.

Speaker 1 (11:57):
Types you got six foot, four six foot, six office of,
lineman and now you got a five whatever, quarterback you
lose him. Asap so you gotta be able to know his.
Tendencies and again it's it's about knowing what quarterback you're
going going up. Against Now i'm Run AM i rushing
the spot or DO i actually get a rush office a?
Lineman and more times than, Not i'm rushing the spot

(12:18):
office a.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
Lineman they're getting paid for being, fat AND i love
that for, him good for.

Speaker 1 (12:24):
You in my, mind they're All Max, starts big, old
big old monstrosities that you can't Teach Andrews, pete you
know The.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
But at the end of the, Day i'm rushing the. Quarterback.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
Oh is he a guy who likes to have spend
take off to his left or? Right is he a
guy who likes to go through a b? Gaps he
guy who actually pats the?

Speaker 2 (12:43):
Ball? Oh By jesus please pat this. BALL i, GOT
i got one more, question but, no, no it's it's
our good, time all? Right? Cool what about the locker
ring now? Here and? Now like guy's got like, say
phones and stuff in. There it's got like a big. Thing,
now how do you adjust to? That because you showed your?

Speaker 1 (13:06):
AGE i remember this now Because Antonio brown was chastised
and down but put down trodden about going live in
The steelers LOCKER i remember that like, like, oh he's
going live and they were making fun of juju Shuster
smith for for corvette corvetting or dancing in the locker
or after after winds or whatever that. Was it's a
part of. Life it's it's an, evolution just like how you,

(13:30):
know guys used to fight over the playing music in
the locker room or, not and you'd have some guys
standing tintoes down.

Speaker 2 (13:36):
Like, oh you gotta play, music that's how you get
your juice.

Speaker 1 (13:39):
Flowing or you have the guys like, no if you
want to play, music put your headphones, on just like.
That hey, bro if you don't you gonna, dance go
take your ass in a corner. Somewhere and it's not
being corny right, right.

Speaker 2 (13:48):
Like this guy's trying to try trying to get ready.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
READY i, mean it's just it's a new, way you,
Know like everybody at this, point everybody's got to. Angle
everybody's got like an idea that they can, be you,
know a reporter or like have this in or create.
Followers whatever that cloud chasing situation. Is, Man it's it's
all sort of no matter the, technology is still the same,

(14:11):
mindset you, Know like you, know some guys are always
gonna you, know it used to be the guys after
the games when there was no cell. Phones they used
to guys off that have the shirt off and have
all this change on. Conveniently you know What i'm, saying
waiting for media come be. Here now you just replace
that with their, phone broy Do they just doing it
in a different. Way so it's all the. Same it's
like the same. Mindset you're all gonna have those super serious.

(14:32):
Players you're always gonna have the super goofy. Guys And
i'm somewhere in.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
Between you, KNOW i just wanna have.

Speaker 1 (14:39):
Fun i'm gonna Have i'm not here For i'm not
gonna be here for a long. Time i'm not gonna
play for another twenty. Years but While i'm, Here i'm
have the best time available and in between the, Lines
i'm the most serious guy that can be BECAUSE i
want to. Win and that's why it freaking sucks so freaking.
LOSE i get there has to be a winner and,
loser BUT i Assume i'm gonna win every, Time.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
So you, know you deal with that as, SUCH i,
said too far move FOR i don't give it.

Speaker 3 (15:05):
THEM i think it's great, though because you, know just
hearing about, that and here you're talking about that, NOW
i just remember like OPPORTUNITIES i used to get AND
i used to have cameras that there locker, ing and
sometimes people feel like you're not focused on, football and,
really guys are just you, know cross branding and branding
themselves while they're in the, league getting ready for that

(15:25):
transition after the.

Speaker 2 (15:26):
League SO i love to see guys going. That, definitely
they don't give it to the way of how they
play on football, field you, know let them do hell
if not even looking at transition to out the.

Speaker 1 (15:37):
League it's more, like While i'm, Here i'm trying to
create the biggest rivalry persona ever we get done Playing.
Atlanta i'm talking trash about every player coach ever associated with,
them Because i'm, LIKE i love that rivalry. STUFF i
love the idea that you know used me to talk
trash like reckless garbage to. Cats you don't have to

(15:58):
worry about being miked. Up you didn't have to worry
about you, know the fans hearing. You i'm not supposed
to like this guy punching in the mouth like you.

Speaker 2 (16:06):
Ain't you ain't never been Like mari AND. I, Hey
god blessing you next play? Brother, no but you and
your mama who created?

Speaker 3 (16:12):
You?

Speaker 1 (16:12):
Bro, LIKE i don't why we all between the? Lines,
Bro i'm not here for none of. THAT i want
all smoke like that was a good route Good i'm
not congratulating on you like that was a good. MOVE
i may if if a running back juke me ooh
that was a good move your. Ass lucky you and
go to this outside WHERE i was BECAUSE i was
about to tag. It you, Know i'm Not i'm not
here for all these, niceties, Bro, like could you could

(16:35):
you imagine you get a sack and you just be, like,
hey good job, Brother.

Speaker 2 (16:40):
No way you dream THAT i opportunity to toss in
that feel you worked so hard for.

Speaker 1 (16:46):
IT i worked my ass off the off. SEASON i
killed myself during season just for that pure. Moment AFTER
i beat this office of a, LINEMAN i smack your,
QUARTERBACK i may.

Speaker 2 (16:56):
Talk to the whole old. Line go, On, dow stop
helping your, Man you. Trash that's WHY i beat. You,
hey your, quarterback your quarterback getting broken because of. You
Like i'm talking all. That speaking of, This i've. Been i've.
Been i've been asking around.

Speaker 3 (17:09):
It who who?

Speaker 1 (17:10):
Is, like you, KNOW i bring Up atlanta time BECAUSE
i hate. Them who is The Pittsburgh steelers? Rivalry because
if you depending on who you, ask it's The, Browns
it's The, ravens like the anc like, y'all y'all to
be hating everybody and an't have that kind of. Energy
who is your?

Speaker 3 (17:27):
RIVALS i, MEAN i wouldn't say we hate. EVERYBODY i
think everybody hate The Pittsburgh. Stellers you, know that's just
that's just. ME i think just because we, lost we
was always loan for hard. Hitting this the history of the,
team you, know the identity of the, team the identity
of the fans and the.

Speaker 2 (17:45):
Town and WHEN i was playing with The, pitts Verg.

Speaker 3 (17:49):
Steelers every time we went on the, road no matter
where we, went it was sold, out it was. Packed
it was always a hard hitting, game like the team
that we watched on the field the week, before not
the same team playing as still as the.

Speaker 2 (18:01):
Day so every game felt like a.

Speaker 3 (18:04):
Rivalry but IF i had, to like him pointed, out
it would have to probably who, DAMN i.

Speaker 2 (18:10):
Told YOU i hate, everybody it would have to be
either The Baltimore raveling Or Cleveland.

Speaker 3 (18:17):
Bruin and because it's just so, close you, KNOW i
think In cleveland sometimes it's kind of a split because
we got a lot Of Pittsburgh stiller fans down. THERE i,
mean The browns say it's really come, out but The
browns wouldn't necessarily playing as good during that time when
we was, There so the rivalries coming outside. It but

(18:37):
when it came when it came to like The Baltimore,
ravens you know that both team was very identical from
their defense to our, defense their offense our. Offense so
it was always usually like a low scoring game and
hard hitting, game and it was trash sharking all.

Speaker 2 (18:54):
Week you, know from the moment when we got off the,
plane you, know it was just, YEAH i have to say.

Speaker 3 (19:00):
THAT i have to say To Baltimore rape IF i
had to pick, one The Baltimore.

Speaker 2 (19:04):
Ray Bamot raven good Old. Bomo.

Speaker 1 (19:08):
Yeah how do you feel about players leaving like your
team to go to a, rival rivalry? Team you, know, like,
well let The steelers right? Now you know what someone,
Say patrick McQueen drafted by The ravens and now it's
a stalwart over, There. Steelers but you, know just you've
Seen Joe hayden go from The browns to The. STEELERS i.

(19:32):
Don't it doesn't sit well with. Me like if Cam
jorn never done In Atlanta Falcons, JERSEY i throw.

Speaker 3 (19:37):
Up but you KNOW i think about it loud can
like you, said you sound, oh let me put you
on The New schools.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
STUCK a lot of these players start off In countege
in high.

Speaker 3 (19:48):
School they jump from team the, team the team playing
with the, rival teaming up against the, rival don't want
to compete against.

Speaker 2 (19:54):
Them Uh so it ain't no little ain't no little no.
More that's. TRUE i ain't never seeing A michigan player
go To Ohio state Or Ohio state player go To.
MICHIGAN i Seen michigan player Done Ohio.

Speaker 3 (20:06):
State really A michigan player went To Ohio, state and
Then Ohio state coach is now At.

Speaker 2 (20:12):
Michigan you, know SO i think it's changed a.

Speaker 3 (20:15):
Lot the robbery in some cases are not the same
because a lot of the players don't grow.

Speaker 2 (20:20):
Up in the. Rivalry and that's.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
CRAZY i stopped being A vikings fan the Moment brett
fav went to The vikings, like there you.

Speaker 2 (20:27):
Go i'm not, like this is.

Speaker 1 (20:30):
SACRILEGIOUS i said. NO i refused to. PARTAKE i was
born In Eden. PRAIRIE i left WHEN i was, four
but my daddy was A. VIKINGS i was born to
be A vikings. Fan and the MOMENT i saw that.

Speaker 2 (20:41):
With weak as four in a purple, GOLD i, said, no,
sir no, Sir we're not doing. This, nope no Camp
it's gonna be really.

Speaker 3 (20:48):
Good ain't no, Lords no more. Camus it's about. Them
it's about, this about the. Money who gonna pay you
and give you an, Opportunity and now that's where you're gonna.

Speaker 4 (20:57):
GO i go.

Speaker 1 (20:58):
HOME i go Home, atlanta say, hey can we got
forty five a year for? You i'll be, like, Hey
i'm taking my talents to the. Crib WHAT i WHAT
i can't do is talk all this trash for the
last fourteen fifty years.

Speaker 2 (21:12):
And you gonna. COME i hate you too.

Speaker 1 (21:13):
Much my comcast that led my will coaching. Coaching possibly
you go coach, There No jesus, no But i'd say.
Possibly if my, son Thank, jordan was playing for The,
Falcons i'd have to have some inner talks with myself
and be okay with. It if my son decides to

(21:35):
go to college and goes to the weakest university In
Northern california Aka, Stanford i'd have to have some serious
talks with. Myself it's a great, school it's for. Academics
it's your, son it's not. You stop Being stop holding personal.
Grudges but that's WHO i. Am i'm petty. LaBelle i
believe in beef bro. LIKE i believe in, beefs like

(21:56):
rap BEEFS r AND b, beefs football. BEEFS i believe
in all of. Them we'll be back in a. Minute
the first ever game played In, Dublin Ireland steelers beat The.
Vikings how do you feel about?

Speaker 2 (22:15):
It what does that mean for the game international in
DUB i MEAN i think it means a, lot definitely
for The.

Speaker 3 (22:24):
Steelers that's one of our territories with The ronney family
having ties from, there SO i think it was it
was great for the players to.

Speaker 2 (22:31):
Go down there and experience. THAT i had opportunity to
experience that a couple of time when we played In, london.

Speaker 3 (22:37):
But seeing how the game has grown over the, years
it just seemed like it was a lot of, excitement
the fans was in the, game AND i think overall
it was just it was a great game on and
off the. Field just watching everything from the experience that
the different things that The steelers was doing and having
a bunch of former players over, THERE i think it's
something That Regal nicks need just see more and more.

Speaker 1 (23:00):
Or, MAN i, mean as this international game, expands it's
it's pretty dope to think about how FAR nfl really.

Speaker 2 (23:08):
Reaches you.

Speaker 1 (23:09):
Know, YEAH i played them in In london games as,
well and it's like that's. Cool but everybody Speaks english
to go now be able to go To, brazil now
to go you, Know, Ireland germany. GAMES i think there's
A french game coming up next. Season, Bro there's so
many possibilities And i'm, like eventually we may get one

(23:33):
of Them european expansion. Joints it, might we.

Speaker 2 (23:36):
MIGHT i don't.

Speaker 1 (23:37):
KNOW i don't Think Central europeans are built to Play american,
football but you see, them they built them, soccer and
it's thinking about.

Speaker 3 (23:45):
Elo my experience of being OVER i had an opportunity
to be over there with The stillers one year we
went To london and played The Minnesota bikers as the wait,
team which we was only over there for about two
or three. Days but then a few years after, THAT
i had an opportunity to go with the with The
Open raiders and we were on team and we stayed
over there for a, week and we stayed at some

(24:06):
historical hotel that was.

Speaker 2 (24:07):
Probably built in the eighteen, hundreds not in sleep good all.

Speaker 3 (24:12):
Week so you would have preferred the tow three. DAYS
i prefer the two and three days this week depends
on where you. Stayed LIKE i, said we stayed at
that historical hotel from the nineteen, MAN i can't.

Speaker 2 (24:27):
Do that the eighteen. Hundreds, yeah he old would in bed.

Speaker 3 (24:33):
It was soot you walking down it was mall. ALWAYS
i mean someone we was on the rip text like hey,
man you, Won, Yeah i'm, up, MAN i can't.

Speaker 2 (24:39):
Sleep it was it was one of. Them it was
one of.

Speaker 3 (24:42):
Them.

Speaker 2 (24:42):
Weeks, ah hate that for, you hate that for.

Speaker 1 (24:46):
You, look we played and we played up In london
twice AND i think we went up like you know
about a week.

Speaker 2 (24:51):
Early a week is. Perfect let's your body?

Speaker 1 (24:53):
Acclimate like we played what Is miami one year and
it was like they flew in that Third is there
A friday to Play? Sunday maybe Flewing thursday got in
There friday to Play. Sunday and we knew we were
had more stamina than. Them like we're, like, oh they're.
Tired they're like you're they're not sleeping well like they
they have an Acclimated you go ten hours across a,

(25:13):
flight you need more than one or two.

Speaker 3 (25:15):
Nights but because When i'm WHEN i in the, day
we came in with The pittsburgh still it was rough on.
Us those two days are also run because just to
get an adjustede to that time. Zone we got off
that plane and Coach tomlin for some reason we had
a fourteen meet and but the, guys it's late because

(25:37):
we got back to the Hot we got to the
hotel room when everybody passed. Out it takes a lot
out of. You so for both, teams no, doubt it
definitely takes a lot out of.

Speaker 2 (25:46):
MAN i, said BUT i.

Speaker 1 (25:48):
Feel Like Mike tomlin always has the team's gear to go, somehow.
Someway the man has never had a losing. Season that's.

Speaker 2 (25:56):
Absurd Coach tomlin is All he's been.

Speaker 3 (26:00):
GREAT i, MEAN i had an. OPPORTUNITY i was one
of his first but a second. Draft Laurence timmy was
the first draft picking out the second draft. Pick but
getting there In, pittsburgh it. Was it was great being
a coach. Time and at that, TIME i think he
was maybe thirty seven and thirty eight years old as
a head, coach so he was. Young he was, slung
and he was. Realistic he was somebody that you can

(26:21):
always go and talk to and have a conversation. With
and we still have that relationship to this. Day you,
know anytime that Coach town comes up here to The
Michigan Pro day game here in Man, arbor he always called.

Speaker 2 (26:34):
Me we go out to eat and break.

Speaker 3 (26:36):
Bread so a relationship is it was still, there and
people resfect him because he just the realistic.

Speaker 2 (26:41):
Coach and you don't new until you put the lamp
black or. Go they have opera the real black.

Speaker 1 (26:46):
Or GO i have the black and you mustard. Yellow
that is A hinds yellow at, best. Sir there is
nothing gold about that except the saying that you guys
want to be black and. Gold in, fact the song
goes black and, yellow black and. Yellow they are not
talking about The New Orleans. Saints we are black and. Gold,

(27:07):
yeah you guys are very bumblebee. Colors you've seen those retro.

Speaker 5 (27:10):
Jerseys, yeah, hey you know what go y'all stadium getting
live when the band. Play, yeah we're, closed, bro none
of our none of our noise.

Speaker 2 (27:23):
Escape yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (27:25):
Yeah Pittsburgh steelers fans are like you, know they're they're
happy to be, involved like they, like they're traditionally excited
to be A steelers, fan AND i love.

Speaker 3 (27:36):
That one thing about one thing of about The steelers
is when WHEN i moved down there To, pittsburgh that
everybody bleep black and. Young you can't go anywhere When
i'm seeing Sucking. Pittsburgh i've never been in a city
where you don't see the opposite. Team the only thing
you see Is, pittsburgh The, Pirates. Panthers you, know you

(27:58):
don't see anything. Else and that's what thing THAT i
love about the city At. Pittsburgh you, know they treated the,
players they treated us like. Family the organization is like.
Family or Mister rennie was somebody who always just had
his doors. Open you can go in and talk to
him at any given of. Time he was always willing
to help. You Mister renney walked to the. Stadium H

(28:19):
everything about that organization is just.

Speaker 2 (28:21):
Family you, know.

Speaker 3 (28:22):
From the players to the, staff to the, cooks to the.
Canadors you, know we all knew each. Other it was
a real it was a real. Family that's why a
lot of guys who had done, way they moved back
To pittsburgh because it becomes home.

Speaker 2 (28:35):
Too IF i wouldn't hear any, Trait i'll be back At.

Speaker 3 (28:38):
Pittsburgh you. Know that's that's my second. Home and it's always.
Loved when you walk into that, building whenever you see
Coach townland go to any of the, games it's always.
Loved it's like being around with your family a. Game
so that's one THING i could appreciate about The pittsburgh
still is the coach town Coach ton is gonna be.

Speaker 2 (28:56):
There swooling on, time so hey for a long.

Speaker 1 (28:59):
TIME i, mean what is it about him that you,
know just keeps the winning happening In. Pittsburgh Coach tomlin
again never had a losing. Season what is it that
makes him so great at being this even kill always
going to have a successful, season regardless of. Adversity quarterback go,
down you drop the rookie. Quarterback you, know players go,
down whatever the insert, is it never takes them too

(29:21):
far off the.

Speaker 3 (29:21):
Mark, YEAH i think with Coach, TONALIN i think it's
just FIRST i was just, thinking LIKE i, said it's
just the identity of The pittsburgh still is that Coach
tonald and caring in there in the brace of that
identity and going out there and finding the coach staff
and the type of players that we. Need we've always
been good with finding the players in the draft that
nobody thinks not before up there and formed coach donand

(29:46):
was always identified on a seperate.

Speaker 2 (29:49):
Players SO i.

Speaker 3 (29:50):
Want the guys go, down hick on to the next.
Guy Russell wilson in lead Become Aaron. Rodgers you know
what people, think why do we Get Aaron rodders when
you can get with The pitzburgh.

Speaker 2 (30:01):
Stupid that Coach. Island he can help take your own
career to a whole another. Level he.

Speaker 3 (30:05):
Learned that's what we started and that's what we're starting
to see. IT i think one off a side of
the linebacker Top I Spephis downd as, well and fifty
one think his name Is. Herbert he's been Coming england on.
Style what he's been playing pretty. Good Uh SO i
think dem about our defense is it's playing hard and
they playing.

Speaker 2 (30:25):
That Coach soland of.

Speaker 1 (30:25):
De MAN i, said you guys always have a solid
front seven to like it was it was, you it
Was Big, debo then then all of a sudden IT'S.

Speaker 2 (30:34):
Tj then it's High smith and you know you talk
about the.

Speaker 1 (30:37):
Interior back back when was a key goal back in
The KEYS a little back to day with that big.

Speaker 2 (30:44):
Man he guys always had some random just dog in the. Middle.
Bro now you Cam Herrt, hayward who's been anchoring that
thing for the last decade and a.

Speaker 1 (30:51):
HALF i, mean just just the idea that he's just
like you, guys mold defense attitude first and then have
an edgy.

Speaker 3 (30:59):
Offense you, know, YEAH i THINK i think that as
A pittsburgh still that they've always did a good job
of like connecting the, history and it's always some player
that was tied to the identity from back of the.
Day when you look At Cam, hayward he played with you,
know like you said myself for The KEYS O Casey,
Hampton Aaron, Smiths Dalliames harris, said when we look at those,

(31:21):
guys they played With Joey, Porter Joey, porter they'll play with,
Uh Jason. Gilder so it's always some some type of
connection to the history where there's somebody on the team
that helps bring that help that hoop that identity of
the team there and so when they need that identity
just sticks. Around and that's what you kind of said

(31:41):
with the Town. Hayworkers he's been wrong for a long
time and now you GOT Tj Wider now isn't continue
to pass.

Speaker 1 (31:48):
Right But i'll, say you, know After CAM, heywt they
ain't getting too gritty after, That like you know What i'm,
Saying like there's there's guys that are Gritty tejas a
little bit more from, this BUT i can see the mentalities.
Greedy the mentality is. GREEDY i, SEE i understand that.

Speaker 2 (32:03):
Part you see the thing here we got a bunch
of camp, hey lot a bunch of Camp. Hey there's
not a man that is.

Speaker 1 (32:10):
One there's only one six foot five and a half
six foot, six three hundred and thirty pound nose tackle
d tackle the end that's, moving that's still going fun like.

Speaker 2 (32:19):
That that's you can't make, those then we take.

Speaker 3 (32:21):
That.

Speaker 2 (32:21):
Man we got If, pittsburgh we read a bunch of.

Speaker 3 (32:24):
Dolls, yeah so when you out there on the field In,
pittsburgh you know you got chet of dogs liveland, too
which you know What i'm. Saying so when you go
out there and, play you got a bunch of people
with the sad type of pedigree that's gonna go out
there and get the job.

Speaker 2 (32:38):
Done and that's WHEN i think we always had In.
Pittsburgh like WHEN i got, there was, like, Man i'm
playing with a bunch of. Dolls, no then they then
they then they hit it. Off so now y'all can
go out there and really.

Speaker 1 (32:47):
Compete you gotta. Pack you gotta pack a hunting. Dogs
it takes you what your second year you go to
The Super?

Speaker 2 (32:53):
Bowl Super? Bowl who forty?

Speaker 3 (32:55):
Three?

Speaker 2 (32:55):
Lord you, KNOW i, mean tell me about. It you tell.
Me that's HOW i break out. Year that was my
my second year of the.

Speaker 3 (33:06):
League you, know my first year of the, LEAGUE i
had six six stats off eighty five slaps as a.

Speaker 2 (33:12):
Rippet and.

Speaker 3 (33:16):
And THEN i had an opportunity in my second year
to become a full time, starter AND i HAD i
had an opportunity to join a bunch of great players
that was on that, defense AND i KNOW i had
to come in there and approve that unbeloved that. Defense
AND i knew, that LIKE i proved it won't belonging
on the defense because you, KNOW i ain't just cooking no.

Speaker 2 (33:37):
Harm but you, know come by.

Speaker 3 (33:38):
COLLEGE i stacked up a lot of, wars a lot
of great things BEFORE i left, there and, uh sad
pack in high, school SO i hadn't been doing this
for a.

Speaker 2 (33:46):
Time then they were just coming to this level and
prove and THAT i belonged at this.

Speaker 3 (33:50):
Level and, uh my first week, STARTED i was THE
afc player of the. WEEK i had got, ON i
got first, CAREER i MEAN i got a, SACK i
got on first career in a, session and you, KNOW
i was just out there just GOING i got to
do to help the team and get the respect from
the other players on there on the, team like you,
Know Aaron smith who had been there for a long.

(34:11):
Time and, uh you, KNOW i THINK i ended that
season with eleven and a half sacks AND i got
six and one in the, playoffs two in the Super,
bowl two in The.

Speaker 1 (34:21):
Super bowl with the game any strip sack On Kurr
water in The Super bowl ruined My uh you, know
maybe you KNOW i SAY i was born in mine
about From. Arizona you know What i'm, Saying you, Ruin
you ruined my hometown's. Team so, saw you, Know Larry
fitz take me to the crib AND i was like,
Yo and THEN i saw Lamar.

Speaker 2 (34:38):
WOOD i was, LIKE i, Know stax trip at the
end of the, game you, know played the players. Crazy, yeah, yeah.
Yeah that was a movie, movement, man that was that
was one of the movie moments for a guy THAT'S
i THINK i was twenty three at the. Time and you,
know you come to the. Sideliner you have coach downeld and.

Speaker 3 (34:56):
Saying he would we need you to make it play
like you ain't me to make it, play, Coach and
to go out there and get that sack forts phone
to help win the. Game, man that's like a dream
comes through in your second year being in the league
and already A Super bowl champions seventeen and a half
sacks that.

Speaker 2 (35:14):
In the end of the, year.

Speaker 1 (35:17):
Ain't bet but, Hey and in that, game Both edges
showed up because big Debo James harrison took took the
longest interception In Super bowl history and to the.

Speaker 2 (35:26):
Krill ninety, nine AND i, SAID i, Said Lord jesus on,
fire he.

Speaker 1 (35:31):
GOING i, said ain't no, way somebody's gotta walk him
down because he ain't never said he was the, fastest
but He, hey that's why you got a whole bunch of.
Dogs so he grizzled his way, through broke three two
three faux, tackles almost got walked down by office a.

Speaker 2 (35:45):
Linement at the, END i, said, hey get it. Done
you didn't let her think about that play like all week.

Speaker 3 (35:52):
Long coach The bowl was just kind of telling, us,
like you, know we were kind of bullshit in practice
a little Being Coach bo was like telling us, like
we're gonna need a deep as a play to help
us doing this.

Speaker 2 (36:01):
Game we're gonna need a big defensive play to win this.

Speaker 3 (36:03):
Game And, arizona you, know they was mooping the ball
down the field and when they played right There Ben
jones were both supposed to, run you, know but you
know him being the, vellor he can make his all
calling in the second year, PLAYER i don't do what
they tell me to.

Speaker 2 (36:19):
Do and he made the right. Call and you, KNOW
i just remember AS i was in There, russia ALL
i hear is the crown of the, rug AND i
Seen jazz as the.

Speaker 3 (36:30):
Ball and so WHEN i turned to run the block,
SOMEBODY i looked At Curtain warner AND i was like before,
this before the. SHOT i looked At Curtain lawler AND
i was like times shot of Tackling Daniel, ferris and
let me turn and find somebody.

Speaker 2 (36:45):
Up so WHEN i turned and looked for, SOMEBODY i
seen the running. BACK i think his name was Fire,
tower he. Thinks SO i gave. Him when we were
push like, yeah AND i look, back the bones is still.
Running i'm. RIGHT i got.

Speaker 3 (37:02):
One that's ALL i. GOT i got one more push
of the time And i'll. Run AND i just leaned
and pushed them out the.

Speaker 2 (37:10):
Way james jumped over.

Speaker 3 (37:12):
Me and when you look back at that, place you
see me looking laying on the, ground looking like Go,
james go you.

Speaker 2 (37:19):
Do for us? Man that was that was that was
a great. Play that was a great team in for
that was a great decision About james to drop that
security ball and now give it to the.

Speaker 3 (37:33):
Shade over twenty six and was trying to take the
ball from, him kept the ball in his hand and
kept running with us as.

Speaker 1 (37:40):
Selfish give it to dB, man give it TO dv
hey hey within five yards he got left by five,
yards so give it TO dv.

Speaker 3 (37:48):
Man if the D v if the D le would
have got the, ball there was no way that block
with the block and it would have been set up like.

Speaker 2 (37:55):
That, yeah the time would have been on The shade
is way. Faster so no doubt that was a great.

Speaker 6 (38:01):
Play and then you know then you have ultimate success
and with with The steelers going from that and you
end up With, oakland we end up having the same
head Coach Dennis.

Speaker 1 (38:13):
Allen you Know Dennis allen started off his first head
coach job over To oakland when that was low key
and like all the old heads was going. There when
you see too many old heads travel over to a
t you're, like oh you canna have one or, two
you can't have five, six shelving.

Speaker 2 (38:31):
All these. Acquisitions all, right we'll see how how was?
That it was a short, time but like you, know tell,
me tell me how how how was.

Speaker 1 (38:40):
It having d as a head coach if you, remember
because he was there for half a season by that
time before HE i released and ended up you.

Speaker 2 (38:46):
Know, YEAH i got, hurt SO i see the cut
just as short as.

Speaker 3 (38:51):
He but, uh over, overall for, me it was just
a different experience because from the pitch burd still lives,
on you know all here on the during you, know
mid West east, coast WHO i have to travel way
out to the west. Coast it was just a different
environment for, myself and that's want to change Because opener
was still trying to rebuild themselves as and we were

(39:13):
trying to find our. Identity but just we just. Couldn't
we just didn't get it. Done it was just we
just couldn't get it done at the. Time BUT i
think overall my experience that was was.

Speaker 2 (39:24):
Great it was a great. RELATIONSHIPS i had this fast
and seen that Opening Raiders.

Speaker 3 (39:28):
Sam based that people talking about it and that being
on the opposite side but actually being part of The
Glenna Cole holler that enjoyed. It uh my enjoyed my Time,
poplan even though it was short. LIVED i enjoyed that.

Speaker 2 (39:46):
Time mm. Hm so it's it's The Bay, area there's it's.
Not it's not a bad time to be.

Speaker 3 (39:51):
Had.

Speaker 2 (39:51):
Now city, WISE.

Speaker 1 (39:53):
I.

Speaker 3 (39:53):
WOULDN'T i would allowed the CITY i lived way pleasant
and SO i was probably about you through the.

Speaker 2 (39:59):
Tunnel oh, no oh, no thirty forty away so. Far
let me tell you, something, man you for the, sad
NASTY i don't expect that from. You i've never experienced
traffic like that In oakland seven days a, week seven

(40:19):
days a, week every hour on the. Hour and that's. Crazy.
Man you trying to get over the, Bridge it's. Crazy,
hey you, try you can get to get. Pleasanted, yeah
because you did that to. Yourself you didn't scout the.

Speaker 1 (40:31):
Area you thought everybody was everywhere was Like detroit And
pittsburgh when there's only two hundred thousand people in the whole.

Speaker 2 (40:36):
State, no, no, No AND i didn't look at the.
Taxes that hows hair out, There, god bail. BREAK i
should have thought about the tax is a confidence enemy
outside and WHO.

Speaker 1 (40:53):
I mean long before there was nil in, COLLEGE i
was at count with after five dollars a gall AND i, said,
catch guess we Got we gotta get on this. School
we ken't get in the. Car oh, Wait rent is
twot twenty seven. Hundred our check is only nine. Hundred
this will take all three of us to do. This

(41:13):
the struggles was, real, man this is y'all had any real.
Struggles y'alln't handling money at that.

Speaker 2 (41:18):
TIME i had zero. Money, hey we're trying to make.
It we had we had to make.

Speaker 1 (41:24):
It, College, hey college created my struggles.

Speaker 2 (41:30):
A good thing for.

Speaker 3 (41:30):
ME i had a little experience Of colline me there
in The may area because you love me And, marshall you,
know good. Experience song was out there attending this football
fasts every. Year SO i had some ass home under
for family out, THERE i. Hope so it maybe it
made a competence.

Speaker 1 (41:45):
Absolutely and then of course you know your your career
ends after you played with The. Cardinals but after that
you transitioned to. Media you, KNOW i have SEEN i
don't seen you with the tackle my. Ride you, KNOW
i GOTTA i gotta be a part of one episode
With John jenkins back in the.

Speaker 2 (42:00):
Gap you, KNOW.

Speaker 1 (42:03):
I was, like this is labar And Woody. PRODUCTION i
mean that they absolutely you, Know and then of course
like where where did where did that take?

Speaker 2 (42:12):
You? Like how did you get?

Speaker 1 (42:13):
There how do you go from always being in front
of camera to the man behind the camera with The
area fifty six entertainment.

Speaker 3 (42:19):
Man That josey kind of started one of. Them ONCE
i got to the, league you know a, lot and
AND i saw my agency Compantly rebecca you, know you
Know rebecca could god still worked together my, manager you,
know she knew that THAT i wanted to get my
face out there outside of and she did a great

(42:39):
job getting me out. There i'm getting the showcase and
getting getting an. Opportunity so Where i've been in a,
baller uh did two two, seasons And i'm done so
many THINGS i can't. Think i'm been On south bor
a couple of different. Things AND i REMEMBER i talking

(43:00):
To rebecca before we did the Show talker On ryan
AND i had to go on this ship for, her
and she, SAID i.

Speaker 2 (43:05):
Got this real cool show for you want to do?
It it's a. Hit what the day? Cars i'm, Like
i'm a little about. Cars besides.

Speaker 3 (43:13):
Drying i'm gonna tell you what kind of any of
those things SO i on dissed up on the show
AND i got the, opportunity and me doing that show
for two seasons really gave me an inside root Of
landre being the, host but how the production and when
it takes for the production to get off the ground
and go.

Speaker 2 (43:32):
Now AND i was answer the. QUESTIONS i was talking
to the. PRODUCERS i was in.

Speaker 3 (43:37):
School you, know this is a lot of time to
really be in school and learn what's going. On and
AFTER i got off that, SHOW i, Said, Man i'm
sta this.

Speaker 2 (43:44):
CAROON i don't. KNOW i don't want to be in
front like CREATOR a really creator my, uh you, know
my entire.

Speaker 3 (43:50):
Life if you go back on, YouTube, man that type
ended The Lard Woodley show and you would see me
started the first podcast in two thousand and eleven WHERE
i did a show Called The Lamar Woodley. Show BUT
i produced my show every weekend different. LOCATIONS i had
the co. HOSTS i did the opening for the show

(44:13):
THAT i. CREATED i had an artist On ladder produce
original music for on, Opening SO i have any copy rights.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
