Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome inside with the Insiders presented by Harbor Freight to
alongside Ian Rappaport, Judy Battista, Mike Garafalo, I am Tom Pellicero.
We got so much to get into from the first
full weekend of the preseason and everything that lies ahead.
We'll think a look back how some of those rookies did,
(00:24):
particularly the quarterback, to the extent to which guys like
bow Knicks made their case for the starting job. All's
talk about some injuries as a first round pick who's
going to miss some time, we will get into that.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
We'll also talk.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
About the contract talks guys like Brandon Ayuk and Ceedee Lamb.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
And let's start with the guy who's made clear.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Again that he wants out, That is with the New
York Jets, where Hassan Reddick, as Ian first posted on
X earlier today, has officially requested a trade.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
From the Jets. And no, you are not imagining this.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
The Jets are the team that acquired Hassan Reddick in
a trade from the Eagles oh of a few months ago,
have not yet been able to work out a new contract.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
The Jets want Reddick to show up before they talk.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
About that new contract. Critick not really interested in showing up.
So what's your response, Joe Douglas Uh, not happening, but
out a statement just minutes later saying, we have informed
Hassan we will not trade him, that he's expected to
be here with his teammates. Then he will continue to
be fined per the CBA if he does not report.
(01:31):
Since the trade discussions back in March, we've been clear, direct,
and consistent with our position. Our focus will remain on
the guys we have as we prepare for the regular season.
So Ian now wasted a lot of time in making
their position once again, as they have privately repeatedly for months,
clear publicly as well, they don't want to trade Hasan Reddick.
(01:53):
Reddick doesn't want to be in New York without a
new deal.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
What gives?
Speaker 3 (01:57):
Twice in two months Hassan Reddick has requested the trade.
One time it worked, although obviously hasn't worked like literally
anyone involved has wanted, and now a second time. This
is a complicated issue and it actually goes back to
right around the time the Jets were trading with the
Philadelphia Eagles for someone who was at the time the
best pass rusher available. A Sono Reditik wanted a big time,
(02:19):
multi year, big money contract extension, something to last him
threw into his mid thirties and really pay him like
one of the highest paid pass rushers in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
They talked about it briefly before the trade.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
I think the Jets probably thought maybe like a one
year dealer, kind of like a bandoned was more something
they would do. Traded for him anyway, thinking you'd work,
and the Sono Redick was there signing the contract, passing
the physical, standing up there and talking about how happy
he was, and then things kind of went sideways when
it became clear the Jets were not going to give
him the long term extension and he only wanted that,
(02:52):
so he did not show up to minicamp, did not
show up to training camp, collected fines after fines after fins,
and ill. The fact that he now has said he
wants to be traded does leave us in kind of
a weird place because it was very evident during free
agency and after that, Asana Renick was available, there was
no team besides the Jets willing to do a trade
(03:14):
and give him a new contract. So a couple months
later are there teams that would also trade for him
and give a new contract something that would make him happy.
Duty Obviously, it's something that remains to be seen. You
can have need dgging, have injuries, there are leverage that
points that are created.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
Prefer Son Reddick and the Jets. After all this, they're
literally nowhere.
Speaker 5 (03:37):
We probably should have thought it was a bad sign
when his press conference, at which Hassan Reddick said he
was really happy to be with the Jets and he
would be there no matter what happened, was held on
April tools Day. Things have fallen apart since then. Look,
whichever signed you believe, whichever version of the offense you
believe here, the reality is this is a really bad
(04:00):
look for the Jets in a very very difficult situation
for the Jets now, because this was their prize move
of the off season. Don't forget Bryce Huff, their pass rusher,
signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. So Hassan Reddick is supposed
to come in and not just replace Bryce Huff. Frankly,
he is a better, more accomplished player than Bryce Huff,
but he is the prize of the offseason for a
(04:22):
team that is built to win. Right now, don't forget
This is a team with an owner in Woody Johnson,
who was not happy with how things fell apart last year,
not happy with coaching and the front office moves. Woody
Johnson wants wins right now, So the Jets are now
in a position of having to figure out how to
get Hassan Reddick in.
Speaker 4 (04:43):
I know the finds are piling up.
Speaker 5 (04:44):
Obviously, if he misses games, he would lose those game checks,
so maybe that is the incentive. But even if he
shows up under those conditions, it's an unhappy player showing up.
The Jets are in a really tough spot right now.
Speaker 6 (04:57):
One hundred and thirty three days between April four day
and today, the most delayed April Fool's Day in the
history or April Fool's Joke in the history of April
Foll's Day. Congratulations Hassan Reddick on that one. I just
you know, I couldn't help. But when this was happening
today and this news was coming out about the trade request,
and we kind of sensed it was gonna get to
this point because of all the holdouts and hold ins
(05:19):
that we have, this one felt like the one that
had the most potential to drag into the regular season,
which means which isn't to say others wouldn't. But we
were told before he didn't report for training camp that
Hassan Reddick was quote serious about his money and his
respect and he felt like he wasn't getting either from
the Jets. But I just couldn't help think today while
it was all going on, and Tom, you mentioned Brandon
(05:41):
Ayuk and we're gonna get to him in a moment
with the forty nine ers. His stance has been to
San Francisco, if you trade me somewhere, I'm not showing
up for the physical.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
So you go back to this, and maybe Hassan.
Speaker 6 (05:51):
Reddik could have slammed the brakes on this one months
ago and said I'm not going anywhere. I'm not gonna
finalize a deal until we have the contract done. At
that point, of course, you can also go to the
Jets and say you got to make sure you got
the contract done and agreed to before you do this trade,
which is a warning for all teams going forward.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
There's a very unique one in how it came together.
We're here.
Speaker 6 (06:12):
I don't know where it goes from here, but I
would think at this point, with both sides dug in.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
It could last into the regular season for sure.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
Us On Reddick, due about fourteen million dollars in twenty
twenty four, already is racked up somewhere in the neighborhood
of two to three million dollars in fines, and that
number only goes up if this goes into the regular season,
and he is not the only holdout within the league. Though,
I think there's probably a better chance of a happy
ending here sooner than later. For the Dallas Cowboys, Ceedee
(06:39):
Lamb has not been present through the course of training camp.
Jerry Jones has spoken on that issue a number of
times in various ways in recent days, saying that he
doesn't have urgency to get a deal done, and later
saying that he misses CD, but to the extent that
CD being gone disrupts anything or might force their head.
(06:59):
Jerry to make in the macro point here that ian
regardless of Ceede Lamb's absence, no matter how badly they
want Tom back on the field, that's not going to
change their negotiating position. So at what point do we
actually get a resolution for Ceedee Lamb.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
It feels to me Tom like the resolution comes at
the last possible day when Ceedee Lamb could show up
and be effective and ready for the regular season, right,
I mean, that's kind of what all sides you're looking for.
Because best case scenario for everyone, Cowboys already know they're
going to pay him a lot of money. May not
be the highest paid receiver in the NFL, but it
is going to be really really close. If this gets
done to Justin Jefferson is going to be hefty, is
(07:39):
certainly going to be the most they've ever paid a receiver.
They want him on the field being awesome like they're
paying him to do. And if you're Ceedee Lamb, you
want the money and then you want to show up
and be effective for what should be a really good
playoff team and potentially deep into the playoffs. So best
case scenario for everyone, this gets wrapped up at some point,
probably pretty soon, when he can show up, have a
(07:59):
couple weeks to get ready, and then roll into the
regular season. Just it's not there yet, and for Jerry
Jones to go out and say he has no urgency
then have to walk it back. Let me translate what
I believe Jerry Jones means he doesn't have urgency, and
that they just have to give him whatever he wants.
But there is urgency and that everyone would like him
here because he's really good. Did that make it? Did
(08:22):
that solve everything? At some point you got to think
this is you're.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
Not forcing my head actually when I want you on
my terms back here. It does seem like we have
at least some positive momentum so to speak.
Speaker 7 (08:36):
Here.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
I would be surprised if they don't find a way
to work things out. The Cowboys have made very clear,
see Lamp's not going anywhere. This isn't a trade him
type of a situation here. Still got time for the
start of the regular season. They also got a quarterback
who's in a contract here. You might have heard Dak
Prescott maybe headed toward having the most leverage of any
player ever to get the free agency right now. He's
also got an ankle that he's been dealing with sodus
(08:58):
in for like four years, suffered that grotesque injury back
in twenty twenty. Dak, however, saying that one thousand percent
he will be on the practice field Tuesday when the
Cowboys get back to Oxnar.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
There.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
I'm in California for a month here through the course
training camp, here says the ankle feels just fine and
he is going to be okay.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
Brandon Ayuk.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
Meanwhile, back to the receiver holdout hold in front still
not with San Francisco, and things have gotten awfully quiet
over the past several days since Mike and I talked
on TV on Friday about the fact that the forty
nine Ers had re engaged in hopes of getting something
done with Brandon Ayuk. Mike, we know the Steelers are
(09:42):
still in the picture. That is the preferred trade destination
for Ayuk. I don't get the sense that there's really
any obstacles to overcome if the forty nine ers want
to go that way. But their actions in recent days,
besides the relative silence of the past forty eight hours
or so, would seem to indicate that there is tension
as of now is to try to get this long
(10:03):
term deal done without you.
Speaker 6 (10:05):
Yeah, I believe, based on every conversation I've had. If
the forty nine Ers say a Omar Khan, Pittsburgh's dealers
deal done, We're sending them to you Boom. The deal's
done in a matter of seconds, and then the contract's
done in a matter of minutes as well. Again talked
about that a couple minutes ago, that being part of
this whole situation, but the forty nine ers who and
(10:26):
Tom you made it clear the other night we talked
about this part. We're looking for the possibility of then
filling the hole with another wide receiver if they trade
away Ayuk, which they could have done as part of
the deals with Cleveland and New England that just never
came to fruition. Pittsburgh just doesn't have that guy kind
of canvassed the market and said, well, you know what,
a lot of these guys either don't stack up to
(10:47):
Brandon Ayuk or the cost is going to be what
we're getting back around, so why are we even trade.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
Let's just try to reset this thing.
Speaker 6 (10:55):
So they did, and they made an offer, and it's
pretty clear by the fact that nothing is done that
that offered isn't good enough for Brandon Ayuk's liking. And
now it just kind of seems like it's stuck in
limbo based on every conversation that I have had today,
and I think the ball at this point probably in
the forty nine ers court, and it's up to them
to decide do they want to pursue the trader or
they want to continue to try to get a long
(11:15):
term deal done with AYUK. Now no real progress on
either front over the weekend. So here we sit on Monday,
same situation.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
Good problems to have, I guess in general, when you
have somebody who's going to comand the top of the
market contract, maybe a problem the Giants could have in three,
four or five years here when malink neighbor's Brookie contract
is coming up. They certainly invested in him, selected him
high in the first round in this year's draft. A
little bit of a scare in practice on Sunday he
suffered an ankle injury, but as Ian and others reported
(11:46):
over the weekend, sounds like it is a minor sprain.
Even though Brian Dabele doesn't want to give us a
whole lot of specific spell what's going on shore today.
Speaker 8 (11:54):
We'll back off them, take it day to day. But
that's where we're at with him.
Speaker 9 (12:00):
You just have MRI X ray any of that kind
of stuff, just to confirm the worst is not a.
Speaker 8 (12:05):
Yeah, they're still doing evaluation on him, but he's you know,
he's a little sort of there. So we'll back off
him and then we'll just take from there. What does
he still have to do in those evaluations? They just
the medical people look at him. So I'm not going
to get into too much of the details. I think
he's okay. He's just a little sort of day. I
just meant liked and did an X ray already occur?
Speaker 4 (12:27):
Ruling out a fracture.
Speaker 8 (12:28):
They're I don't think it's fractured.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
What the medical professional?
Speaker 1 (12:32):
Maybe the medical professionals just answer the questions too, because
it is pulling teeth for Brian Dabele.
Speaker 4 (12:36):
I get it.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
Don't want to speak on the actual medical details here, Judy.
It seems though, as if crisis averted for the most part,
about a guy who so far as really impressed and came.
Speaker 5 (12:48):
Yeah, the most important thing Brian Dabel said is not
a fracture, so they dodged the bullet on the worst
case scenario, a serious injury. They're clearly going to dial
him back, although Brian Dabel would not even say that
he would keep him out of the game this week
if the doctors said he was good to go, But
it sounds like they're going to just pull him back
a little bit. He has been quite impressive in training camp,
(13:09):
so far, so they're going to be very careful with
him because certainly this is going to be a critical
part of the offense going forward. One person we are
going to see in the week two preseason game quarterback
Daniel Jones, who has been doing everything in training camp.
He has been fully cleared. He is expected to play
in the Week two preseason game. That'll be the first
(13:30):
time he is playing in a football game since the
ACL injury that ended his twenty twenty three season. So
big step forward for Daniel Jones. And actually Dave Ball said,
you know, he would like to get Molik Neighbors and
Daniel Jones on the fields in a game together.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
We'll see how that goes.
Speaker 5 (13:47):
But they've been practicing together the whole time and looking
pretty good at it.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
A lot of preseason action over the weekend, including for
this guy, Bo Nicks.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
That's the name I.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
Was trying to think of when my brain broke for
about five seconds at the top of this set. But
what type of case did he make for Denver's starting
quarterback job. We'll talk about that and a lot more
with the guy who was there, Omar Ouiz next on
the inside. Colts lost their preseason over to the Broncos
(14:21):
on Sunday, But a lot more important for Indianapolis that
guy number five, Anthony Richardson finally back on the field
two for four passing for twenty five yards in that
game against the Broncos. He had time to take a shower,
get something to eat, and then talk to our Omar
Ouiz after the game.
Speaker 10 (14:38):
Anthony Richardson here, Anthony, your first came back after more
than ten months of rehabbing recovery. Described the emotions of
getting back out on the field.
Speaker 7 (14:45):
Here, and I'm just thankful, you know, Gud made it
possible for me to be able to come back out
here on the field, my brothers and my teammates, you know.
So I'm just having a great food. I got another
opportunity to be back on the field, and I'm just
thankful and just happy.
Speaker 10 (14:58):
What were you focusing on training camp? You wanted to
translate here today in just a limited role that you
had in this preseason debut.
Speaker 7 (15:05):
Here, honestly, just being a quarterback, you know, managing the game,
you know, taking what the defense give me, and just
being the leader. You know, day by day now by night,
you know, I'm just working, you know, trying to be
the best version of myself for my team and just
for the city. So you know, I just want to
just keep working and trying to be the best.
Speaker 10 (15:21):
We only saw one game with you and Jonathan Taylor
sharing the field last year. How much excitement do you
have to be able to play with him a full
season and see what kind of damage you guys can do.
Speaker 7 (15:30):
Man, we talk about it almost every day, you know.
We just counting down the days where we'll both be
out there on the field together, just making plays and
making it happen. So we're talking about it a halftime actually,
Like man, we just hope we can get more plays.
But you know, it is what it is. Preseason. We
just gotta get ready for Week.
Speaker 10 (15:44):
One next week against the Cardinals. What do you want
to build on from this week to next week?
Speaker 7 (15:49):
Man, just make the most out of my opportunity. You know,
however many minutes I get next week, I'm gonna make
the most of it. And I just gotta no work.
That's it.
Speaker 10 (15:57):
Appreciate your time, Anthony, good good luck the rest of preseason.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
Time now for Preseason Spotlight presented by Harbor Freight As
we welcome in that guy Omar he's already back with
us along with Judy Batista. I am Tom pelvisero Omar.
I talked to Anthony Richardson a week ago and he
went through the entire rehab process with the shoulder.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
Alsoad he really worked on his.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
Mechanics, kind of refining his arm angle. Again, you observed
him live and in person. You talk to him after
the game.
Speaker 2 (16:24):
What were your impressions of his return to the field.
Speaker 10 (16:28):
Well, the arm looks as strong as ever, as Shane
Styken described it, That ball really flicks out of his hand.
We saw the arm strength. But I asked Shane Stiken
before the game what impressed him most about Anthony Richardson's
dealing with this adversity and the recovery process, Because of
course he worked hard in the rehab room, but stikeens
saying the fact that he continued to develop his craft,
(16:50):
continued to grow as a quarterback, all the work he
did in the meeting rooms to continue to get better
that way was something that Steiken came away with And
they've seen that in the early days of any camp.
They hope to continue to see it in the preseason. Obviously,
we talked about Jonathan Taylor and Anthony Richardson sharing that backfield.
Richardson also saying that not only do they look forward
to playing together and making plays, but they want to
(17:11):
hit home runs and become explosive as an offense. Another
comment that I got from Stiken before the game was
they didn't want to design any runs for Richardson in
this preseason opener, obviously trying to keep his health in mind,
but they also didn't want him to not react, and
so when Richardson took off running in the game and
ran out of bounds, Steiken certainly was pleased with that.
(17:34):
He was also happy with him getting out there for
the first time in more than three hundred days, working
on the chemistry, getting together with his teammates, and just
running through the operation again, going through his pregame process
and all of that. So well, the emotions were certainly
there for Anthony Richardson. He anticipates them being even more
so for that Week one opener against Houston, But a
good run through for him on yesterday against the Broncos.
Speaker 5 (17:58):
Really good to see Anthony Richardson out there again. Obviously
he's the man in Indianapolis, but on the other side
of the field in Denver, they're trying to figure out
if they have a man as quarterback. They're in a
three man quarterback competition. Bo Nicks, I thought Omar probably
showed up the best. I think that four scoring drives,
(18:19):
which is pretty good no matter where he is in
the pecking order of the competition. How did he improve
his standings, if it improved his standing at.
Speaker 11 (18:27):
All, Well, Judy, how often did we see last season
Sean Payton seemingly furious on the sidelines and Russell Wilson
the brunts of that frustration many times?
Speaker 10 (18:38):
Well, Sean Payton certainly was pleased that the Broncos didn't
allow a single sack, and a lot of that had
to do with bo Nick's mobility. You saw it right there,
rolling left, firing there down the sideline and making plays
with his feet. And that's something that Sean Payton told
me they weren't surprised by. He's been doing that in
training camp, in practice, in scrimmages. He said that's very
(19:00):
important to him. It's something he's been training on to
improve that running. And I saw that even before the game.
He was the only quarterback to go through an extensive
warm up process, sprinting, working with the trainer trying to
work on that mobility even before the game, and it
showed there. So that was an impressive part of his performance.
Courtland Sutton told me that he was most impressed by
(19:21):
the way Bonix operated the two minute offense, first time
playing in an NFL setting, getting the ball with a
minute forty five to go and leading a scoring drive,
and then to come out of the third quarter and
lead another scoring drive. So showing that poise, that moxie
on display. You said it, Judy, He led scoring drives
in four of his five possessions there. Certainly felt comfortable,
(19:43):
he said, it's just football. When he's looking at it.
That defense, he said, yeah, they were professional. They're showing
a lot of disguises. The defensive players seemed a little faster,
but when you look out at it, it's still cover three,
it's still quarters, it's still man trying to figure out
which one it is. He did that fifteen of twenty one,
one hundred and twenty five yards and a touchdown there.
(20:04):
So bow Nick's shortly sewing showing why he was the
twelfth overall pick this year. And he'll get the start
this week against Green Bay after they have a joint
practice there in Denver, and then he'll start the preseason
game number two for them.
Speaker 1 (20:19):
That is a Sunday night game live on NFL Network.
As bo Nicks tries to wrap up at starting job
for the Broncos, Omar, thank you very much, Talk to
you again soon.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
This guy wrapped up the starting job.
Speaker 1 (20:33):
I don't know, like three months before the draft in Chicago,
Cayleb Williams. You know he's gonna be the guy for
the Bears. But how quickly will he play at a
high level? Will break down the number one pick coming
up after this On the Inside It presented by Harbor
Freight Cold t running back Jonathan Taylor, one of a
(20:55):
half dozen players across the NFL who wore the Guardian cap.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
In the game.
Speaker 1 (21:01):
Something that is new this year over this past weekend,
the first full week of preseason NFL games, something that
you may see more often now that that is permitted,
and something that has certainly spread across the NFL, with
most positions now required to wear them at least in practice.
Welcome Back to the Insiders, presented by Harbor Freight Tom
(21:21):
Pelaso alongside Judy Batista. Judy, I know you've written on
this This has been something that's been ongoing, not just
in terms of the Guardian caps, but the NFL investing
in trying to find better helmets, position specific helmets. They've
been putting out that poster for years are the best
ones and the worst ones?
Speaker 2 (21:39):
Where do we stand?
Speaker 1 (21:39):
It wasn't say to you the year seeing players at
least experiment with trying to wear the Guardian cap.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
And again.
Speaker 5 (21:46):
I think that was a big question when the league
allowed this spring players to wear the Guardian Cap in games,
the question was would any players wear it in game?
You know, it is outer recover that most most position
players are now required to where during practices. So we
saw a handful of guys where at this weekend. The
interesting thing is in the latest helmet testing, there are
(22:09):
a number of helmets, new helmets available now to players
that actually performed better than a helmet plus the Guardian cap,
and so obviously that is an option for players. The
league wants players to be in the safest possible helmets,
the helmets that do the best at absorbing impact. They
would like to get as many players as possible to
(22:32):
go towards the newer, most highly rated helmets, but As
we all know, helmets are a very personal decision, and
once players are comfortable in a certain style of helmet,
they are reluctant to change it. They're very conscious depending
on their position that they play about the site lines
and their peripheral vision. So it's going to be interesting
to see if the players who are wearing the Guardian
(22:54):
Caps now stick with it, if this is just an
experiment in the preseason to see if they're comfortable with it,
they continue it in the regular season, or might they
then switch to one of those very high performing helmets
that actually outperformed the Guardian Caps.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
Also important understand this is database. It is science based.
Speaker 1 (23:14):
There are years of data that's been collected from various
sensors in players helmets, not just in the NFL, but
at the college level as well. So why position specific
helmets While you get hit differently as a quarterback who's
probably most prone to hit in the back of your head,
versus an offensive lineman or a defensive lineman who's in
that contact every single snap. So those positions, the linemen,
(23:34):
the quarterbacks, those are among the position specific helmets you're seeing.
Speaker 2 (23:37):
Rolled out right now.
Speaker 1 (23:39):
Further we get along the fewer Guardian caps you're probably
going to see in games with some players at least
given it a test run Mike.
Speaker 6 (23:47):
Tom Elsewhere on the field in the preseason, Caleb Wllliams,
Hey you go four for seven ninety five yards. Showed
a little mobility, showed a lot of moxie, showed a
lot of poise in the pockets. Showed about everything you
could possibly ask for from Kaylen of Williams in his
preseason debut, DJ Moore called it quote outstanding.
Speaker 2 (24:05):
Here's Williams on his performance.
Speaker 9 (24:06):
It definitely feels good to get out there. Last time
I was out there on the field other than practice,
it was November eighteen, and it's you know, you go
that long without something, it's it's it's tough. But you know,
it's been great. The guys have made it fun. They
made it easy on me talking about our talking about
our other players. They've been They've been great from the
beginning to now. And and you know, my my progress
(24:30):
is I would I would tell my progress and support,
I would count it to them. Uh, they've been great,
like I said, and so uh to get out there
and and and and have the confidence you know that
we had out there. It's it's only going to get
better and we can't wait.
Speaker 6 (24:43):
Looking forward to the hard knocks treatment of that preseason game.
Now it's time for the Cam Wolf treatment. All that
means is just some facts. Ian, That's what it means.
Camera Wolf joining me uh and Ian Rappaport Here. Ye, Cam,
you were at that game. Let's talk about Kayla's perform.
Was it, in your opinion, as outstanding as DJ Moore said.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
Absolutely, as advertised.
Speaker 12 (25:05):
Everybody in a Bear's shirt was leaving the stadium smiling
because it was confirmation of what they thought when they
took this guy number one.
Speaker 11 (25:13):
Overall.
Speaker 12 (25:14):
Look, it's just one preseason game, but I want to
paint you a scene of maybe how the Bears felt
after the game. I'm in the locker room talking to
Bears safety Kevin Byern and we're talking a little bit
about the game, and very quickly he's like, man, did
you see Caleb. He was like, man, that throw on
the run that he hit to Cole Comet, that twenty
six yarder. He's like, only a few quarterbacks in the
(25:34):
league can do that. And then Jakwan Brisker, the fellow safety,
gets in and he was like, man, his throw on
the run ability, it's special. We got something there, and
I heard one of the other DBS say it kind
of looked like Patrick Mahomes, right, And so you got
your DBS, your defense already raving about your rookie quarterback
in one preseason game. I think it shows just kind
(25:55):
of how important Caleb Williams is the direction of this franchise.
And just talk to people with the Bears along the
sidelines before the game, they discussed just how big of
a jump he's made from the end of otia. So
the start a training camp, he's been working on his
own to get better, and small things like we saw yesterday,
like sliding a slipping slide slide that they've.
Speaker 4 (26:16):
Had a hard knocks playing up.
Speaker 2 (26:17):
That's something they've worked with him on.
Speaker 12 (26:19):
And so the continual development of Caleb helps the continual
development of the Bears, and they're excited with the potential.
Speaker 4 (26:25):
And I think you'll see him again this week against
the Bengals duel.
Speaker 11 (26:30):
No Man.
Speaker 3 (26:30):
Some of those throws, though, it's hard not to look
at them and being like, all right, this is kind
of what it's kind of what Bears fans had to
run for.
Speaker 4 (26:36):
Let's just be real.
Speaker 3 (26:37):
Meanwhile, on the other side of that game, billse fans
have already been more than comfortable with that with their
franchise quarterback Josh Allen. Of course, as we know has
been well documented this offseason and essentially entirely Crewe, entirely
new receiving corps from Game Davis and Stefan Diggs out
to Kean Coleman in Alan. Getting comfortable with that crew
(26:57):
is going to be such a big part of this season.
Where are they now after one preseason.
Speaker 2 (27:02):
Game and is a work in progress is what I
would say.
Speaker 12 (27:05):
They had their first preseason game, Josh Allen just had
eight snaps and there wasn't a lot of success on offense.
And in fact, after the game, Sean McDermott was really
upset with the sort of standard that they had. He said,
I don't care who we play or where we play,
there's a standard of play that comes when you put
on the Bills colors and we just didn't have it today.
Speaker 2 (27:23):
And so I would like to.
Speaker 12 (27:25):
See more of them in the preseason and getting that
rhythm down. I've talked to their general manager, Brandon Bean,
and he said, look, the reality is Steph is not here.
Speaker 2 (27:33):
Anymore.
Speaker 12 (27:33):
Gabe Davis is not here anymore, Mitch Morris is not
going to be here anymore, and so Josh Allen has
to really build this thing anew with these new receivers,
like you mentioned your Keon Coleman's, your Khalil Shakirs, and
so that.
Speaker 2 (27:45):
May take some time.
Speaker 12 (27:46):
This may be a team that may not come out
guns blazing in September as they try to figure out
their new identity. And at times it looked like that
when I was watching the preseason game, they struggled to
run the ball, and afterwards they said, hey, we weren't
game planning, but it does look like a team that
has to figure out who we're going to be, who's
going to be our go to guys, and we may
not learn that And so, you know, week two, week
(28:07):
three of the season.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
Kim, I agree with you. I think the Bills need
to see more from themselves.
Speaker 6 (28:12):
And sometimes you get like a little bit of game
planning from a team in this kind of spot that
wants to get some good vibes going. So let's see
what they do, how much they roll those guys out
over the next two games, just to feel good about
that offense. Heading into the regular season. Thank you very much,
Camera Wolf, appreciate it. Coming up after the break, Mark Ross,
our front office expert's going to join us to break
(28:33):
down the performances of some of these rookie quarterbacks from
the first week of the preseason. This guy did a
terrific job. Plus we got an update, a medical update
of one of the other guys.
Speaker 2 (28:42):
It's up next to the Insiders.
Speaker 1 (28:54):
Jane Daniels only threw three passes in his preseason NFL debut,
but certainly made the most from a forty two yard
dime to Diami Brown on a play then Day may
or may not have been supposed to check to that throw.
Hard to argue though, when he puts it into a
tight window like that, then James Daniels doing.
Speaker 2 (29:13):
Something that I'd say is smart.
Speaker 1 (29:15):
For anybody giving the game ball from his preseason debut
to his mom or Gina Jackson omnipresent in her son's
life and career, so of course there for the preseason
and FL debut. Welcome back to the Insiders, presented by
Harbor Freight as Welcome in our Mark Ross, It's time
(29:36):
for rookie moves.
Speaker 2 (29:37):
Who's making a move?
Speaker 1 (29:39):
Mark James Daniels didn't really have anywhere to make a
move too, at least of the death Jarney's GIMBI one
in the preseason opener. It would be a shock if
he's not QB one when we get to September. But
you watch the tape, what'd you see from the number
two pick? Well stop the season?
Speaker 13 (29:54):
Three passes, a huge shot down the field, he russ
were a touchdown? What else do you want to see?
From the just keep him on the shelf to the opening night. Now, look,
he's got to throw more. Of course, three pass is
not going to get it done, but at least he
was efficient with that. The huge shot looks like, as
you mentioned, may or may not have checked off there
with that, but he looked poised, he looked in control,
(30:14):
and that's just beautiful right there, whether I mean it
just the velocity, the placement was awesome. And then of
course this is what made him the second pick in
the draft, the dual threat ability that he has, and
I thought he was the best running quarterback that has
come out since Lamar. So I think we'll see a
lot lot more of this the rest of the preseason
and also of course during the season.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
But next game for him to get better.
Speaker 13 (30:35):
Let's just see more than three passes going there for
my man, Jaden Mark.
Speaker 6 (30:40):
The next quarterback we're going to talk about is JJ
McCarthy from the Vikings.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
But hold on right there, because we've got an update here.
Speaker 6 (30:47):
New right now from the Vikings from head coach Kevin
O'Connell saying that JJ McCarthy has knee soreness and will
not participate in tonight's practice.
Speaker 2 (30:57):
Here's the problem.
Speaker 6 (30:58):
O'Connell told reporters then after that that he was planning
to give McCarthy more time with the ones this week
and is uncertain if he's going to make the trip
to Cleveland for the joint practices. So you would think
that if he misses this week, I mean, it's all
but locking it up for Sam Darnold as the starting
quarterback for week one. But before we get to all that,
(31:19):
let's break down what we saw from McCarthy in his
preseason debut.
Speaker 2 (31:22):
Mark. Yeah, that injury really is a shame.
Speaker 13 (31:24):
I was in Vikings camp last week couple whatever that was,
and you know, I thought as long as JJ kept
playing and impressing that he was going to take the job.
You know, they kept saying all the right things about
Sam being the guy, but it was just apparent just
in that practice of the way people were talking about
JJ that they believed in him. The team believed in him,
the front office believed in him, the coaches. So he
(31:46):
went out there and had a bad interception early, but
came right back and he was slinging it and was confident.
Two huge shots down the field, which of course at
Michigan didn't throw a ton and it was questioned if
he could do that too, beautiful ball down the field,
did use his legs to get out of some trouble
and make throws as well, and had eighteen yards rushing
(32:06):
on two rushes a big third down, So Vikings people
had to be extremely encouraged with j J and wood
he showed there and unfortunately for him being hurt, that
will set him back. But man, hopefully he can have
a quick recovery because I thought he had been an
opening day starter and definitely what he showed warranted that,
like this could be the guy.
Speaker 1 (32:26):
We're talking about JJ McCarthy in that starting quarterback mix,
not just because he's worrying Tommy Kramer's iconic number nine.
Vikings Jersey but also because the guy who used to
have that job, Kirk Cousins for the last six years,
got one hundred million dollars guaranteed from Atlanta, and then
six weeks later the Falcons drafted his potential replacement, Michael
Pennix Junior nine of sixteen, one hundred four yards. It
(32:47):
would seem marked to be a pretty solid debut against
the Dolphins.
Speaker 13 (32:51):
Would you think it was solid for short of all
these guys, of course, we always knew Pennix was the
one that probably would not start. All the rest of
them had those rookie quarterbacks had a chance to be
the opening day starter. But for Penix, you kind of
saw a little bit of good, little bit of bad,
a lot of it just quick, get it out your
hands really fast, which was kind of his calling card
there at Washington. But did again the thing he did
(33:12):
really well washing the deep ball. We saw a nice
deep shot down there on the right side, you know,
left going right for him. Did sail a couple which
we saw at Washington as well. But the good thing
for the Falcons is that, Okay, he doesn't have to play,
so Penix, you still got time to work this out.
Sure he'll take a ton more snap to rep without
Kirk playing in preseason. So we saw a little bit
(33:34):
of the good and the bad with Pennix that we
saw at Washington, and let's see we can iron out
that accuracy a little bit.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
Mark. Thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (33:42):
Look forward to chatting with you as we continue to
track these rookie quarterbacks and a whole lot more through
the course of the preseason coming up after this. It's
not a rookie quarterback pushing for the job. Justin Field's
got his opportunity and well they could snap him the
ball that might help us get a real evaluation on this.
Will it be Fields In the second preseason game, oral
(34:02):
Russell Wilson make his first Steelers start. We'll talk about
it next. So the Insiders presented by Harbor.
Speaker 3 (34:09):
Freight, welcome back to the Insiders presented by Harbor Freight.
And that is DeShawn Watson, who has doing plenty and
can't be we have not yet seen him in a
preseason game. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski announcing recently that Deshaun
(34:31):
Watson has finally finally been fully cleared for contact after
that fracture in the Glennay bone in his throwing shoulder.
Easy for me to say, not going to play in
this week's preseason game against the Vikings, but will play
against the Seahawks the final preseason game for the Cleveland
brown That is going to be one to watch there. Meanwhile,
(34:52):
the Baltimore Ravens got some news, some very positives for
their standout safety Kyle Hamilton, who of course join me
in cam Wolfe on inside training camp, was a fantastic
guest day after that.
Speaker 4 (35:05):
A couple of days after that, left practice early on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (35:08):
What they thought was a sprain Asne was stable, they
weren't one hundred percent shore. Then he had tests it
confirmed it is just a sprain, probably going to miss
a little bit of time, but not major. That is
excellent news for one of the best young players in
the NFL. And then there's a situation for Amarius Mims,
the Cincinnati Bengals first round pick, someone who they believe
(35:29):
it's a good chance to be their starting right tackle.
He is actually out several weeks with a strained peck
according to coach Zach Tail.
Speaker 4 (35:36):
Not great for Joe Burrow, but they do.
Speaker 3 (35:38):
Have Trent Brown there as a starter if they need
and then what will the Pittsburgh Steelers do at quarterback
against the Bills on Saturday. Coach Mike Tomlin has not
yet decided if it would be Russell Wilson or if
it'll be Justin Fields. Remember, Russell Wilson be dealing with
the cap injury, has not seen a ton of practice time.
They still do have a quarterback situation, so I want
(36:01):
to try to figure this out.
Speaker 4 (36:02):
So what are they going to do?
Speaker 3 (36:05):
Welcome back here with me and my good friend Judy Batisa,
who is right over there.
Speaker 4 (36:11):
Judy, what are they going to do with this quarterback situation?
Speaker 2 (36:15):
What should they do? Well?
Speaker 5 (36:19):
Justin Fields, as you know, has gotten most of the
work with the first team because Russell Wilson suffered the
calf strain even before they got on the fields for
training camp. And that's been good for Justin Fields. When
I talked to Mike Tomlin when you and I were
both actually at Steelers' training camp in Latrobe, when I
talked to Mike Tomlin about it, he said, like, that's
been really good for Justin Fields to get to know
(36:40):
the guys, and it's actually been really good for the
Steelers defense to be facing Justin Fields. Because obviously he
shows them a mobile quarterback and they face some of
those during the regular season, so really good for the
Steelers defense to get some work in against a mobile quarterback.
But I asked him about Russell Wilson, and he said,
he's got to be careful with him. He's got to
be cautious with him because he's just getting to know
(37:02):
Russell Wilson, and Russell Wilson is just getting to know
Mike Tomlin. And so, as Mike Tomlin put it in,
this is just a small annoyance now, the calf strain.
He does not want it to turn into a big problem.
Speaker 6 (37:14):
Now.
Speaker 5 (37:14):
In the past few days, Russell Wilson has ramped up
the amount of activity, but they are purposely being very
cautious with him. He says, he's a competitor. This is
Mike Tomlin talking about Russell Wilson. He is dying to
show the Steelers what he can do. But part of
it is that Mike Tomlin is sort of protecting Russell
Wilson from himself. They certainly don't want to aggravate an
(37:36):
injury that we know. We have watched other players deal
with calf strains. They can linger the Steelers certainly don't
want that situation because Russell Wilson is still in the
pole position to be the starting quarterback and they don't
want to do anything to jeopardize his long term availability.
Speaker 3 (37:52):
Ran If you listen to people who know these Steelers
and medical staff, well, doctor Jim Rally is one of
the best, most respected doctors in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (37:58):
Really believes that so.
Speaker 3 (38:00):
So many of the lower body injuries emanate from the calf,
So they are incredibly careful with the player with the
CAF strain, which helps explain why Russell Wilson hasn't played,
which all makes sense, except part of the issue is
Justin Fields has played really well and you know that. Look,
we saw Ryan Tannehill resurrect his career with offensive coordinator
Arthur Smith. Well, Justin Fields has some similarities there, but
(38:24):
is more athletic and has a little bit of a
stronger arm. You know, he reminds Arthur Smith of Tannehill
a little bit. You kind of wonder can Justin Fields
do something similar and if he can, does that edge
out Russell Wilson. I would say this, Judy, it's a
lot more open than I probably thought, and probably a
lot more open that it would have been had Russell
Wilson not get injured.
Speaker 4 (38:44):
But all this is going to.
Speaker 3 (38:45):
Play out over the next couple weeks and I for
sure look forward to this one. Meanwhile, we are not
done here just yet. I am told we are talking
about NFL flop. So let's get to Ryan lee Burn. Wait, no, no,
it's something different.
Speaker 8 (39:04):
Oh my oh?
Speaker 4 (39:07):
What in the tarnation?
Speaker 6 (39:08):
Is that?
Speaker 1 (39:16):
The NFL preseason rolls on with six live games on
NFL Network a week two that's tried six live games.
A new era is taking shape with rookie classes looking
to show out live on NFL Network. Blackout restrictions apply
also streaming on an NFL Plus subscription required for NFL Plus.
(39:36):
One of the storylines still playing out who will be
the Raiders starting quarterback Antonio Pierce reiterating he will not
make a decision on his starting QB until after this
Saturday's preseason game against the Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (39:49):
Panthers know their.
Speaker 1 (39:50):
Starting quarterback is going to be, and of course will
be last year's number one pick Bryce Young, and he
got a key weapon back on the field in the
least limited form today, Xavier le Get, who've been sidelined
last week with a foot injury. Returning to drills today
could be a while. Till Andy Reid as Hollywood Brown
out on the field, though Reid says the Brown will
(40:10):
not need surgery after suffering that sc joint dislocation in
the Chiefs preseason opener. To be determined on whether he
is ready to go in week one. Certainly they got
a lot of speed, but not a whole lot of
guys faster than that guy. In other injury news, Spencer Anderson,
Steelers offensive lineman still recovering from the devastating blow that
(40:33):
he suffered in Pittsburgh's preseason opener. Look at the big man, go,
Spencer Anderson over three hundred pounds, so you know that
he was hit with the force of a thousand freight
trains to send him.
Speaker 2 (40:47):
What do we got?
Speaker 1 (40:47):
It looks like with the additional role, he's a solid
eleven yards behind the line of scrimmage here. As one
of our co hosts might say, what intarnation was that
It brings us to a very important question. As we
wrap up this edition of The Insiders presented by Harbor
Fright Judy, I will start with you should the NFL
(41:08):
like certain other leagues institute rules for over selling penalties
or flopping as it might be.
Speaker 5 (41:18):
First of all, let's be kind. Maybe Spencer Anderson has
some balance issues and that contributed to the rolling situation. No,
they don't beat a rule against flopping leaves, which I'm
not even going to say that have rules against flopping,
still have flopping all over the place. Look at international soccer,
no no flopping rules. Players rarely do this.
Speaker 2 (41:41):
In the NFL. Whatever, let them flop.
Speaker 4 (41:43):
It's the preseason.
Speaker 3 (41:47):
Yeah, I would say for me, the best thing about
this thing is that he he looks like he's trying
to swim but in air. I don't know about whether
or not they should, but look, it's like he's trying
to hold his balance. And then it's like when the
Jets used to score and it was like, you know,
they would just like be soaring in mid air and
Rex Ryan.
Speaker 4 (42:03):
That's literally what he looked like. He looks like he's soaring.
Speaker 3 (42:06):
Anyway, put that guy in the penalty box for forcing
us to get through this segment.
Speaker 4 (42:09):
But I kind of liked it a little bit too.
Speaker 6 (42:12):
Mike Judy, you mentioned other sports you won't mention. I'm
gonna mention him by name one of my pet peeves.
This is a left turn here. But like in hockey
they called the hook and the dive at.
Speaker 2 (42:22):
The Saint like which one was it? It had to
be either a hook or a dive? How can it
be both? How was he embellishing? What incarnation?
Speaker 3 (42:30):
Right?
Speaker 13 (42:30):
Ian?
Speaker 4 (42:31):
Yeah, I'm with you, literally.
Speaker 1 (42:33):
Into Steelers beat writer this Alan Sanders. This could be
fake quote or not, but I'm still gonna use it.
Anderson said, there's no place for violence like that in football.
Speaker 2 (42:42):
Fairy Tomorrow
