Speaker 1 (00:00):
And now move the sticks with Daniel, Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
What's up everybody? Welcome to move the sticks, DJ, Bucky
and Baldy and h Baldy. As we get started here,
I you know Bucky knows about this. It's it was
a tough weekend for me.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
It just was.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
It wasn't so tough about it. Let me just give
you the backstory here, Baldi, real quick. So my daughter
who's now married and lives in Fort Worth, but this
is several, yeah, maybe maybe five years ago. She knew like,
I'm a lifelong Padre fan and like probably too much
of a fan, so she thought it would be funny
for my Christmas gift.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
One year.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
She goes, you know what, I'm gonna get dad a
coffee mug and then see if he thinks it's real funny.
So this is the this is the coffee mug that
she bought me. Now, since she bought me this coffee
mug five years ago, this speaking team have won three
World Series, including back to back. So I'm drinking the
coffee today and then I'm gonna throw this mug away

(00:59):
and hopefully that's gonna be the last time I have
to watch the Dodgers.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
Well, not that you want.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
To hear this, DJ, but I I'm thankful it was
daylight saving time this weekend because I stayed up for
the eleven innings.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
Yeah, that was as good a baseball game. That great game.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
I mean, if we're talking about x's and o's and
execution and all that stuff. I never seen more catches,
more tags, more throws that god is still eleven innings
than in that game.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Yeah, I want to I want to start here a
little because we're got we got tons of football we're
gonna get to. But I do think it's something we've
talked about buck with with team building over the years.
And you know, I look, I tongue in cheek and
I make fun of the Dodgers because of the checkbook,
and I joke around that our minor league teams in
Lake Elson or theirs is the country of Japan. But nonetheless,

(01:45):
at the end of the day, I feel like there
was it was I even uh, I enjoyed watching the
Miguel Rojas type players. The andy pie has gets inserted,
makes it play in center field, and I feel like
every championship team you know, and we see it every year,
just watch Super Bowl every year, you know it was it.
Corey Clement one year with the with the Eagles has

(02:07):
a great game like it.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Man.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
And we've had guys and I've talked to hockey hockey
buddies and that they are in personnel and they talk about, Hey,
at the trade deadline, we want like we're trying to
get championship glue like that, we're not chasing start.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
We got this.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
We have the stars, like we just need the glue
to kind of hold all this stuff together. And I
thought it was another example of whatever sport you're in,
that you got to have those types of guys.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
I agree.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
I agree, And they're like, you know that to see
where some of those guys started this year and where
they finished, you know, celebrating and and uh you know
the confetti following all the stuff that happened to the
Dodgers into Toronto as well.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
I mean, yeah, and some of the type guys.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
But uh, you know, we'll see what happens on by Tuesday,
trades are already being made. But I mean, you watch
some of these guys that are coming out of nowhere,
Kyle man Ungui.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
We'll get to it.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
Oh yeah, I did hit. I'm looking forward that conversation. Yeah, Buck,
did you give me a and Bucky for those who
don't know, is the Dodger adopted but still the your fan?

Speaker 3 (03:00):
But what what?

Speaker 2 (03:02):
What give me a move?

Speaker 3 (03:05):
The sticks?

Speaker 2 (03:05):
Team building takeaway, I.

Speaker 4 (03:08):
Would say outside of team building, man, can you have
a team that can execute the fundamentals under pressure? I
think when I look at them and I think about
the last two times they won, when they beat the
Yankees or whatever. We can talk about the talent, but
really was the execution of fundamentals and high pressurized environments.
Can you turn the double play? Do you have the

(03:29):
awareness to know where to go with the ball in
those moments? Because we saw the Phillies. The Phillies basically
gifted the Dodgers a thing because the pitcher had a
brain for and a critical moment that that pressure just.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
And so it's funny because m J. D came and
spoke to my high school team last week and he
talked about can.

Speaker 4 (03:48):
You do the routine things routine? But when you get
in pressure moments, can you do the simple things like
make the throw the first? Can you get the cutoff?

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Man?

Speaker 4 (03:58):
Can you do the things that you practice all the
way from little league to the majors when the game is.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
On the line. To me, that's everything.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
And we see the International Football League, you know, I'm
looking at the Patriots. The Patriots are winning because they're
just executing the fundamentals and playing company football. Like if
you ask me what has really changed in them is
they're playing company football at a fundamental level. That's why
they're winning.

Speaker 3 (04:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
I think there's also you know, last thing, we'll get
to the football here, but there's also just kind of
knowing your identity. And I think that there's when you
get in those big moments you have it's a fight
or flight, Like you get the guys who are in
an attack, We're going to attack and aggressive. And again
I go back to the I mean, shoot, you go
back to the Philly Special like that that whoa okay,
Like we're there's no there's no such thing as playing

(04:45):
on your heels. You were playing on your toes and
you're playing in an attack mode and you go for it,
and you know, and the and the Blue Jays, I'm
sure we'll have a lot of you know, of these
little regrets. You don't get a good secondary lead off
third base like that that play was this close. Like
just if you'd just executed that one little fundamental, you
ran the World Series. And it's like that in football
a time game. Evnch is famous quote. But let's jump

(05:06):
into these games, guys. Let's start first of all, Baldi,
let's go Casey Buffalo. I took a look and really
did a little fun study on Josh Allen in this one.
But I'd love to know what your takeaways were in
this ball game.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
Well, you know Aaron Kromer, the offensive line coach. You
know he's he's got a great offensive line. But they
get on a play, they will run that play over.
And oh, they ran a countertray with Jackson Hawes's rookie
tight end who's really a great blocker, and Reggie Gilliam.
They ran it literally three times a row, but they

(05:40):
ran it eight times before Kansas City finally shut it down.
They got James Cocones first time in twenty eight games
with the Chiefs surrender one hundred yard rusher, and I
thought that's where it started. I thought on offense, like
they really won the line of scrimmage, and you know
what's Fag's gonna line up Bolton and Tranquil and Chanale
and you're gonna throw big linebackers and stack the box,

(06:00):
and they got creases on that play a bunch. And
then you know, Josh you know, did what he does,
you know, just being able to extend plays and find
open receivers and all that kind of stuff. So I
thought that was that side of the ball. And then
on the other side, I thought Cold Bishop really showed up.
I mean he defended four balls, two of them in
the end zone, one at the very end of the game.
And I thought Joey Bosa played the best game I

(06:21):
seen him play in probably a couple of years. Like
he's he's been a factor. You know, it helps that
Milano and Benard are back in there. But those are
some of the things I saw DJ that James Cook
got busy, and you know, they stayed with the run.
They're one of the teams in this league right now.
The trend started last year. They run it more than
they've thrown it. They're a running team. We saw that
when they changed the coordinators last year and that has

(06:42):
not changed this year.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Help me help me out, guys, Cold Bishop. Is he
twenty four?

Speaker 3 (06:48):
Yeah, twenty four?

Speaker 2 (06:49):
Okay, Yeah, I'm gonna, I'm gona, I'm gonn look at
his notes, there.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
Was some question marks in the back end, especially with
Mahomes and and all that speed they got Bucky, and
I thought like he was everywhere.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
He was a manned man.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
I know if Xavier Worthy he was on the back half,
he was in the center field, like he was everywhere
in this game.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Six two two oh six four four five, three sacks,
two picks. I wrote down Johnny on the spot. He
directs traffic, He's a communicator, he kills running backs as
a blitzer. He's plays some nickel backer. He can shed blocks,
his physical versus tight end. He's very comfortable and effective
in the robber role kind of playing in that in
that spot of the field. So I always like when

(07:28):
if Baldy notices something on the NFL tape, it's always
fun to go back and look at the college notes
and see if there's a marriage there.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
Yeah, there's certainly something there.

Speaker 4 (07:36):
And we've talked about the Buffalo Bills, and we talked
about like the sum of the parts and how they
kind of put together and how they have a clear
blueprint for how they want to play on offense and defense.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
And defense in particular. It is a championship puzzle.

Speaker 4 (07:51):
They don't necessarily have stars, but they have a bunch
of role players that collectively play at a high level.
And when you get them to play offense the way
they want to play, where they're running the football, they're
dominating time for possession, they're controlling the clock. Their ability
to play confmunity football at a high level gives them
a chance to beat anybody. And in this game, what
I love about Sean McDermott and Josh Allen is they

(08:14):
are the chameleon. They're the team that can They can
engage in shootouts, they can play in grandit out affairs,
and they don't mind doing either to win. Just a
really good win for the Buffalo Bills, and at a
time when people were talking about, oh here come the Chiefs, they.

Speaker 3 (08:28):
Squashed it right away with a great performance on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
You know, they're largely a zone team, so there's a
there's a sequence of plays at the end of the
first half of the Chiefs are down there knocking on
the door. They're down on the two yard line and
they you know, you see these teams break down his
zone coverage all the time. Like they don't break down
his own coverage, like they know when that ball's in
the air, like they're bebies. Bishop was one of them

(08:52):
that are coming to contact. They I thought, I didn't
know if Kelsey was going to make it to the
second half. The way Bishop hit him in the end
zone there just buckling, and so they held the Chief
to a field goal there. It was one of the
differences in a game right at the end of the
first half.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
That's great, man. I didn't get a chance to watch
the defensive tape yet I did see in the just
looking at the numbers, I think we're so had like
nine or ten pressures in that game too, So he
sounds like he had a pretty good game on the
defensive side of the ball. I did go and watch
all Josh's stuff, and it was interesting how fast everything
was happening. For the first portion of this game. It
was just quick decisions. I just wrote down on my notes,
like he does not turn down easy wins, Like if

(09:28):
you're going to give him a completion and an easy win,
he's going to take it right now. Some of it
is in the screen game that's designed, but I mean
he's reading it and he's just taking it. And what
he does I think about, Remember, we're all growing up
and we're playing basketball, and you'd warm up doing the
dribbling drills, so you'd start pounding the ball really really low,
and it's just like that, quick, quick, quick, and then
you start now you start balancing higher like that, letting
the ball bounce. So it's like, that's his rhythm. He's

(09:49):
going to go out there. Buck always likes to talk about, hey,
let's just see the ball go through the hoop a
couple times. Find our rhythm, and then we can get
a little bit more aggressive. So he does that, and
then it's like, man, he kind of found that little zone.
And then now next thing you know, now we've got
cover two. I'm playing with the corner, I'm pulling him up,
I'm whipping a seven route right over his ear. Now
I'm hitting these tight ends on these end cuts. Like

(10:11):
he kind of eases his way into the game. And
then you look up at the end of the game
and the guy's twenty three at twenty six, two for
two seventy three and including in that I think there
was a drop, so he's really had two incompletions. And
then he in a jo Hum they can go and
quarterbacks and he ca it and get two touchdowns out
of him that way as well. So I asked Harbaugh
this question the other day Baldy and I thought it

(10:33):
was he gave actually a great answer. But h I said,
you know, I feel like in football, when we talk
about rhythm, we only talk about it in terms of
like the passing game, and a quarterback, you know, finds
his rhythm. I said, how about like in the run game, like,
you know, do you feel like that rhythm? And he
gave this great answer about how all of sports He said,
I don't care. In football, if you're a corner, it's

(10:54):
just getting in a rhythm with your feet and your hands,
and you think about the run game, so you know, basketball,
he said, all of sport is about rhythm. And I thought, man,
like this this is the way like that was offensively
for them running the ball, quick completions, Like I just
thought there was a good rhythm and a flow to
what they were doing.

Speaker 1 (11:11):
I feel like the way Joe Brady calls a call,
calls the game right now, like he feels that rhythm.
There's times when they will go up tempo. But when
I tell you like the week before they ran the
same play. I guess it was against Carolina whoever they
were playing, but they eve ran the same play nine
times in the game, same run. I mean they don't
even try to like they don't try to even window

(11:31):
dress it. You know, they'll just line up in the
formation and just go. It looks like it's, uh, you know,
a summer nine on seven drill. We're just gonna work
on this counter trade today, we're gonna perfect this play.
And like that's what they get into that rhythm in
the game, Like they'll just dial it up. Sometimes they
doubled up because it's supposed to work, and sometimes because
it did work, but either way.

Speaker 3 (11:51):
They stay with it.

Speaker 2 (11:52):
Buck those nineties Cowboys teams, do you play against them
at all?

Speaker 3 (11:56):
Yeah? We lost.

Speaker 2 (11:57):
I always thought, just as someone who was watching that
actually that that was like, hey, there's no secrets, this
is our three running plays and here it comes.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
Stop it.

Speaker 4 (12:05):
One day, I'm gonna ask RV this because we swore
that they didn't believe in audibles, Like they would line
up in whatever you were in. It didn't matter, like
you could play cover two and they're still gonna throw
the comeback they're still gonna do whatever it is.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
They canna run, sprint, draw to Emma Smith, and come
right downhill.

Speaker 4 (12:22):
And they were so arrogant about it because they say,
when I'm better than you, why do I need to
trick you?

Speaker 3 (12:27):
We're better? So they just line up and do their thing.

Speaker 4 (12:30):
And there is something too what Baldy saying with the
Buffalo bills about Hey, there's no need for us to
stop us. If this team can't stop this play, we
go keep running it until they show that they can
stop it. And then when they stop it, we're gonna
run it again to make sure that they found the answer.

Speaker 3 (12:48):
And it wasn't look that they stopped it. But that's
what great play callers do.

Speaker 4 (12:52):
And look, I can say this and I learned it
from watching Steve Spurry when he was at Duke and
I was a freshman.

Speaker 3 (12:57):
Steve Spurry would run one play on one.

Speaker 4 (13:00):
Side, slipped the formation, and run the exact same play
and I was like, I've never seen anybody do this,
but He's like, if you can't stop it out, I'm
just gonna keep running it. And there is some ingenuity
to being able to do that.

Speaker 1 (13:13):
And one of the things I think you were talking
about going back to team building, DJ. You know, one
of the reason why the Bills have not been able
to get past the Chiefs in the postseasons they haven't
affected Mahomes enough. And yesterday they hit him fifteen times,
you know, Bosa hit him five times all by himself,
and there was a lot of deep throws where Mahomes
never saw the ball like he was like literally, uh,

(13:36):
you know, on the turf and buffalo there and so
that's the formula. And whether it was Rousseau or Bosa
at Panessa, like they got to Mahomes just and honestly,
for the first time this year, the tackles were terrible,
like Jalen Moore, like all of a sudden, you go
and get now to gets Simmons back. Juwan Taylor, you know,
is gonna he's gonna have a holding call, He's he's

(13:58):
gonna do something, just going to jump off sides like
I thought yesterday and the Janner Morris came in for him,
and I thought they really beat the tackles up bad yesterday.

Speaker 2 (14:07):
And they had been pretty good to this point, no doubt.
Let's get to another game here. Uh, at this point
in time, is someone who's has been uh been on
the Darnald train.

Speaker 3 (14:19):
Man.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
Like it's the point now I don't even have to
argue anymore. I mean I just kind of sit back
and just say this petion DJ. I mean, if you're into,
if you're into incompletions, he's not your guy. I mean,
I'll just tell you that right now. But I mean,
perfect first half for him ended up as a ridiculous
stat line. I'll uh, I'll jump in on something real
quick because I you know, we can talk about Sam,
We've talked about him a bunch, but Tory Horton when

(14:41):
he was drafted, I mean he was it was such
it was so ridiculous.

Speaker 3 (14:45):
Buck.

Speaker 2 (14:46):
It was like when you're sitting there on the desk.
You're sitting there on the desk, and it's to the
point where you start texting guys and calling guys and
being like, dude, what am I missing? Am I taking
crazy pills? How the heck is this guy still on
the board? Like this is this isn't all that hard.
I know he hadn't been totally healthy, but this is
not not tough. He has two touchdowns in this game.
You can get it to him quick. I mean it's

(15:08):
a boat race. He runs a corner route and it's
just like he's over ten yard. I mean, it's not
such a close, such a fast rounde what what a yeah?
What a steal? And a fine?

Speaker 3 (15:18):
Was he did he drop because of a knee problem.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
He didn't play much. He didn't play much as last year,
didn't play as well. I'll pull up my uh, I'll
pull up my notes on him right now. Uh So
Tory Horton excellent twenty three was hurt this year. Inside outside,
smooth mover, it can separate, deep, excellent agility, change of direction,
he can work back. He's got a huge catch radius.
He's six oh two four one. He ran four to

(15:42):
four one. So he was my seventy third overall player.
And I think they I think he was a fifth
round pick. Maybe yeah, I can fund What the heck?
I didn't understand that one, but man, he's he was great.
And then uh, I got a text from Brock Hubord
this morning because I do that thing with him every week,
and he said he's like, hey, go watch the receivers

(16:04):
block because I've been hammering.

Speaker 3 (16:06):
I've been hammering.

Speaker 2 (16:06):
This is the same point all year, which is my
culture definition now for for a team's is how how
physical are your little guys and how and how do
your big guys run. So if you've got defensive linemen
that are hustling and chasing, and you've got corners that
are tackling, and you've got receivers that are blocking, you
got linemen who are efforting, straining to finish like that's
a cold, that means you got your culture dialed in, Baldy,

(16:28):
and I think the Seahawks team's got a big time
on both sides.

Speaker 1 (16:32):
Yeah, I mean, I thought Gray's Abel was a perfect pick,
you know, at left guard for him really solidified the line.
But honestly, like I think, sometimes you just put the
quarterback and the coordinator together like Sam and Clinton Goog.
It's it's a symphony right now the way this thing
is operating. And I know we've talked about Smith and
Jig but before, but he I mean, I know Jamar

(16:54):
is probably going to lead the league with catches and
all that stuff. But I don't know if there's a
more difficult guy to defend this league right now than
Jackson Smith Jig. But what he does to separate, like
his subtle moves, I always thought Bucky that you know,
to be a great route runner, you got to be
able to change direction without losing speed. And his subtle
movements to separate are as good as anybody right now.

Speaker 3 (17:14):
He's terrific.

Speaker 4 (17:15):
Han't had a chance to watch him a few weeks ago,
early in the month when they came to Seattle. I
mean when they came to Jacksonville. That team is well constructed.
DJ you talked about Sam Donald and their offense. Their
offense is one that has a rhythm and a flow
to it. You talk about Jim Harbaugh talks about getting
into a rhythm. That's what you feel Jackson Smith and
Jig but is the one though he is the number
one option, he is a smooth route runner.

Speaker 3 (17:37):
He has big playability.

Speaker 4 (17:39):
I feel like each game he has even more confidence
and more competitive arrogance that shows up like he kind
of has this bounce in this step where he knows
I'm the man and you can't stop me. And I
feel like great players have that and I'm seeing that
in him. But then he's surrounded by a bunch of
guys that can get it done. You talked about Horton,
I mean you got Alijer Arroyo. You have other wise

(18:00):
receivers that can come up and make big plays, and
they still can get to the running game when they
want to. This is a really good team because that
offense operates like that. And then defensively, I'm gonna tell you, man,
you can be hard for us to find a more
disruptive and athletic group of trench warriors than what they
have in Seattle.

Speaker 2 (18:20):
There's a million with Leonard Williams, Murphy, you will.

Speaker 3 (18:25):
Sue you got to raise Lawrence, I mean, Jerry Reed.

Speaker 4 (18:28):
They are just rolling these guys in and look, I
would say this if this was a dating gap.

Speaker 3 (18:35):
They certainly have a type because all these guys look
the same. They are all the.

Speaker 4 (18:39):
Same type, big hands, they dominate, they are Look, man,
this is a team that is emerging as one of
those dark horse contendents that we're going to talk about
in the end because they certainly have a team that
can get it done.

Speaker 1 (18:51):
And we've talked about big Kat Williams a lot this year,
but honestly, I always thought DJ that for most defensive line,
not all, but most, it takes a year to figure
it out. And I feel like Byron Murphy has figured
it out. He is now a real fight, not just
in the run. That guy is a real factor. He's
he looks like it's a great John Schneider pick right there.

(19:13):
That he's going to be like the middle of that
defense with Dron and Big Cat, the whole group right
now for a long time.

Speaker 2 (19:20):
I wish, you know, these teams haven't played yet, but
I'd be all for it if we could have the
first ever doubleheader and just say we're going to have
the Rams and the Seahawks play it. Let's let's start
the first game at eleven. Let's play that first game.
Let's get let's get some orange slices in, let's get
a little bit of a break, and then we come
back and play at seven o'clock and let these two
teams go at it again again. Those games are going
to be a real war. It's gonna be a war, man.

(19:42):
I can't wait for that. Let's take quick break, we
come back, we'll knock out a few more games. This
one is the one that we're going to talk about
that I didn't have a chance to get to the
tape yet, so I'm gonna have to defer to you guys.
We had to man all this crazy stuff going on.
So we were late getting in last night coming home
from Nashville with the Chargers. So this is the one

(20:03):
I didn't get Indie Pitt. So, Baldy, why don't you
jump off here? Tell me what I missed in this.

Speaker 3 (20:08):
I was there.

Speaker 1 (20:09):
I was there from the beginning. I talked to our
boy Andy wide up before the game, and honestly, I
went down just pretty game.

Speaker 3 (20:15):
I was on the field.

Speaker 1 (20:16):
I was talking to TJ and Hie Smith, and I
met Jack Sawyer for the first time, and I just
I told those guys, like, you're gonna turn this thing around.
They had given up sixty eight points and losses to
Cincinnati and Green Bath. If you got to go, I
just told TJ, if you're going to turn this thing
around here, it's got to be with you guys. And honestly,
the Colts had their way for the first quarter. They
went up and down the field, and then TJ turned

(20:37):
a corner on Braden Smith got the sack sack fumble
recovery and it was all downhill from there. Like they
dominated the front all game. And it was interesting. They
had traded for Kyle Dugar this week. You know, I
think he arrived on Tuesday or Wednesday, and they you know,
they had gotten you know, Deshaun Elliott got hurt and
Chuck Clark was was ineffective.

Speaker 3 (21:00):
They started Jayalen Ramsey Duggart safety.

Speaker 1 (21:01):
They played every play and nothing got over their head
for the first time all year, Like nothing went over
their head. And it started up front. They had They
had some different looks defensively, some different They came after
Daniel Jones a lot, and they turned it over six
times in a game, and they they you could see
that this team could still be a problem because they're

(21:23):
taking care of the ball. On offense, they're not great,
they're not dynamic, but when the defense plays like that,
you get as many extra bats as you get. Because
Jonathan Taylor was a non factor in the game for
maybe the first time all year.

Speaker 4 (21:35):
You know, what's interesting is whenever you dismissed the Pittsburgh
stealers or count them out, they find a way to
always come back with force. And they are a team
and Mike Tomlin has a way of kind of like
being able to keep the season in perspective while building
that back. What's interesting you talk about Dougar and Ramsey
safety and being able to keep the ball in front

(21:56):
because I worried about they were playing so much man
de man early. You've seen the big plays, and I wondered,
are they going to need to transition back to whether
stillers have always been, which is a zone team, a
zone blitz team, a pressure team, a zone behind it,
because that's how they eliminate the big plays. And when
they're able to take the ball away and do that,
it gives them time to kind of warm up that

(22:17):
old jelapia of an offense that they're playing with because
it's not sexy what they're doing offensively, but it can
be effected because Aaron Rodgers can get them in and
out of plays.

Speaker 3 (22:26):
He can make a handful of throws to do it.

Speaker 4 (22:28):
But they're going to need their defense to carry the
water because their offense is incapable of being a high
powered offense just based on the personnel and what they have.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
Well, I'm looking forward to studying that game. I got
the Steelers coming to so far this week, so get
to see them against the Chargers. So looking forward to
seeing what you guys saw on that. One interesting note
here from Gavin and the chat here Jalen Ramsey to
Baldy's point, eighty three point six percent of his snaps
the first time in his career, we're at safety, the
first time he's been over thirty percent of snaps in
the game. So he was eighty three point six percent.

(23:01):
And then Douggar, who they just brought in seventy two
of seventy six. Yeah, so I mean he was out
there ninety seven point three percent. Like they rolled with
those guys. Baldy well the.

Speaker 1 (23:10):
Guy that you will that will pop and I'm sure
that you know, uh when he was healthy at North Carolina, say,
Peyton Wilson was, Oh yeah, I mean I know when
you see you know, when you see him him, you're like,
you don't see inside linebackers that are six four with
that kind of range and speed. And you know he
had the interception Daniel Jones never saw him, a little
whip route to Josh Downs. He blocked the pass coming

(23:31):
off of Blitz that Jack Sawyer intercepted. He had thirteen tackles.
He was all over the field, and they've been rotating,
you know, inside linebackers with Queen and whole coming of it.
Like Peyton Wilson is their guy and he he was.
He was a real difference maker in that game.

Speaker 2 (23:47):
So I'm going through my notes on him. I mean,
he he's in red on my list. So he was
my forty first player. He would have been one of
my grade wise, would have been one of my top
fifteen players in that drafty six oh three seven he
was two thirty three. He ran four four three. He's
a wrestling champion, had you know, the knee and the
shoulder injuries, which is why he fell. A violent player,

(24:08):
can shed. He's got excellent instincts, speed and range covering
the flat. Uh, He's a physical high tackler. He'll chest
you up, he can run through you. You know who
My comp was on him, Baldy, because this guy never
put it together for an extended period of time. But
he to me, he was a better version of Kiko Alonso.
You remember back in the day, like early was that long,

(24:31):
rangy linebacker Miami.

Speaker 1 (24:33):
The Buffalo stay healthy. But yes he had, he had
a couple of really good years. But you know, I mean,
it's just to Bucky's point about Pittsburgh, Like they celebrated
the twenty year anniversary of the Super Bowl team against
Seattle and in Detroit, so you know, all the players
were back and power was there, and you know Ben
and and you think like even you know, pick a

(24:55):
guy from that area, Joey Porter or whatever. That's the
Steelers are built around their linebackers and so but you know,
Keanu Benton had a great game and Cam Hayward showed up,
and you know, they came alive.

Speaker 3 (25:07):
They knew what was on the line.

Speaker 1 (25:08):
They'd heard all the talk about it, and man, that
was that was an impressive performance against what the number
one offensive football.

Speaker 2 (25:15):
Yeah, it's the best offense I've seen all year in Indy.
So that's a big win. Let's get to Minnesota Detroit.
I'll start off on this one. Watch McCarthy's stuff. I
was curious to see what he looked like. The number
is pretty predestrian. Fourteen to twenty five a buck forty three,
had two touchdowns, one pick, and also he ran one in.
But watching him, you know, I was really encouraged by

(25:36):
it because there's you can pull out eight plays in
this game and you can see what you need to see.
You can see the athleticism, you can see him drive
a deep comeback. So if you had any concerns about it,
does he have a big enough arm. He does his
arm strong enough to be able to do those things.
I thought he saw the field pretty well. When he
had a chance to get over the top, he took
his shots to get down over the top. Now some

(25:57):
touch stuff, I think that's just rust. You know, you
got to get through that. He missed some throws with
some accuracy stuff. But I thought there was a toughness
the way he played, took some shots in the pocket.
Thought he saw things pretty clearly. I thought you saw
the athleticism. You saw it on a scrambled touchdown. And
I thought you saw the arms strengthen. Man, they poor
Meek Robertson. Man, meet Robertson. He's such a he's a

(26:18):
tough little player. But I mean you're asking him to
line up on the outside Justin Jefferson. He's gonna pluck
the ball off his head like there's just you got
no shot.

Speaker 3 (26:29):
But I love it.

Speaker 2 (26:29):
I go back to watching him at Louisiana Tech Talk.
He was such a feisty little player. I admire that.
But boy, you're bringing a knife to a gunfight when
you're out there with Justin Jefferson.

Speaker 3 (26:39):
Look, you can't do And I understand what they're trying
to do with him.

Speaker 4 (26:43):
And look, he had outplayed because they had talked about
he had earned the right to be on the field,
and I get that, but Justin Jefferson is a different animal.
The Minnesota Vikings are interesting because you were hearing all
these reports about the discord and oh are they falling apart?

Speaker 3 (26:56):
So it was good to see j. J.

Speaker 4 (26:57):
McCarthy and this team get a win. And JJ McCarthy
I think he is whatever they need him to be. Well,
he will eventually be whatever they need him to be
on a given moment, much like he played at Michigan.
He played in a managerial role in Michigan until they
need him to be a playmaker. I still believe he
has that in him and that's going to be the
player that he is, just because man, I've never heard

(27:20):
anybody swear by him as much as Jim Harby squears
by this dude being an alpha and a dude.

Speaker 3 (27:25):
I just think he has it.

Speaker 4 (27:26):
It was a great win for them because they were
in danger of falling behind the Pack because the Bears
are going the Packers at the time before the game
they were going and then the Alliance, so it's a
great win. It brings that pack all the way back
together and gives them a fighting chance to get back
into the conversation in.

Speaker 1 (27:42):
Their next two games are home against Baltimore in Chicago,
and they're going to we'll find out. I mean, they
got to five hundred here to halfway point. You know,
they rescued their season for a week, but it's they're
going to get tested by two good.

Speaker 2 (27:54):
Teams right now, no question, Chicago Cincinnati. This game was bunker.
This game almost caused me to miss the bus leaving
the stadium in Tennessee because I was up there in
the Premium League.

Speaker 3 (28:06):
I'm watching it.

Speaker 2 (28:07):
All of a sudden, I was like, oh, I was
up there with money. I'm like, whoa, we better get going, man,
Like we're sprinting down below the stadium to make sure
we didn't miss the bus.

Speaker 3 (28:14):
But I couldn't.

Speaker 2 (28:14):
I couldn't turn it off. It was like one wild
turn after another with oh.

Speaker 1 (28:17):
You you saw an onside kick recovered? You know, I'm crazy, like, uh,
you know, there's so many things in this game. I mean,
remember I probably date myself here. But you used to
have this commercial national commercial during NFL games. It was
the new York Life commercial, and the defense would just
like literally running to each other and fall down, and

(28:38):
some like you know, some joker would end up scoring
as a result. Right and they you know, they had
like a different theme every week about it that looked
like the Bengals at the end of the right there
two Skafeties running into each other right there, they converged
in Loveland makes the biggest plays made so far.

Speaker 3 (28:55):
I mean, you couldn't.

Speaker 1 (28:56):
I mean I felt for Jamar Chase when they cut
to them on the sideline, like, you know, did you.

Speaker 2 (29:01):
See him after the game ball when they was walking
through the tunnel and they caught the hot mic caught
him saying one bleeping stop? Yeah, yep, can you get
one stop? I mean, goodness, gracious.

Speaker 1 (29:13):
But they've scored eighty points in these back to back
games and lost both eighty points.

Speaker 2 (29:19):
That's hard to like this. What do you think Buck?

Speaker 1 (29:23):
Look?

Speaker 4 (29:23):
Look, man, I think they should have known what it
was going to be when they made the moves that
they made, when they committed all the money to the offense.

Speaker 3 (29:28):
They lit it really good.

Speaker 4 (29:29):
I feel like I say this every week. They let
lou Anamromo go. They blamed him for the defensive failings,
but they never changed what they were doing. They're just
not good enough on defense, and there's no way to masket.
They can score a million points, but they go give
up a million and one every week. They just can't
slow people down. And it's hard to win with the
team that is so one dimensional in terms of offense

(29:51):
and defense. You just can't get it done. On the
other side, I'll say get the bearss credit Katy Williams
and those guys are continue to show growth.

Speaker 3 (29:59):
Ben Johnson being to switch things up to make sure
that they are able to win games. Uh.

Speaker 4 (30:03):
And they're in the conversation, which is what they want
to be when it comes to the NFC North. But man,
if I'm a Bengals fan, I'm pissed off because this
is a team on offense in particular that is playoff caliber.

Speaker 3 (30:14):
They just don't have a defense they can get them there.

Speaker 1 (30:19):
I'm curious, uh, DJ your notes on colinmanung Guy. I
already know you're going because like, Okay, he goes, he
goes for one hundred and ninety eight total yards. Right,
There's no DeAndre Swift, It's Kyle Manungay, and it's it's
theo Benedett left tackle. It's Colston Lovelin at tight end.
Cole comit got back, it's Ozzie Trapillo is the third

(30:41):
tight end. We've seen all these thirteen tight end packages
out there right now. And there's anung guy and you go,
what doesn't he have? Like I mean, I know it's
the Bengals and you know they're just like sliced them
like turkey.

Speaker 3 (30:52):
But man, he was. He was impressive.

Speaker 2 (30:56):
So, Kyle manung guy, you want to know who, stylistically
my competent and I'll get to my notes stylistically. So
here's size. Yeah, he's five eight, So, Kyle manung guy
is where did I go? I just lost him?

Speaker 3 (31:08):
Here? Did he leave the rushing two years in a row?

Speaker 2 (31:14):
Hold on? I just switched over to the twenty five?

Speaker 3 (31:16):
Shit? Here is okay?

Speaker 2 (31:17):
Here does he was? He was five eight two two eleven.
He ran four six oh and Indy so he ran
amongst the running backs in Indy. He ran the second slowest. No,
so he had third slowest time, I believe.

Speaker 1 (31:31):
No.

Speaker 2 (31:31):
You know what's funny, you know what's interesting. This is
a great point here. So let me give you some
of the slower running backs from Indy Oli Gordon so
cam Skataboo ran four six five. Ok Oli Gordon ran
for six one yep, and uh well yeah. Then there
was one other guy from Markansas, Quentin Jackson. He ran

(31:51):
four seven five, So that was a rough one. But
then the other slowest Onenguy ran for six. Oh so
three of the four slowest guys are you know, playing
and yeah, making tracks happen, So throw throw the forties out.
We've talked about that with running backs before. But he
reminded me the way he held the ball and the
way he ran. He ran me a tiki barber five eight,
kind of compact guy, holds a ball high and tight.

(32:12):
He let's see my notes on him here, no fumbles, Uh,
he can press, bounce, holds the ball high and tight,
reminding me of a little tiki barber. He runs with purpose.
He's got kind of a unique style where his offhand
like we used to talk, I remember what we used
to call it, where he just swings his offhand. It's
like a meat grinder like with his off He's got
kind of a just a he's a very unique looking runner.

(32:34):
But I just like the fact that he ran with purpose.
Trust his trust, his eyes, trust his vision, hit it
and go. But I went through and watched his explosives
in this game.

Speaker 3 (32:43):
And I'll tell you what.

Speaker 2 (32:44):
If you looked at explosives as a crime against the defense,
I'll tell you right now, Darnell Right and Romadunzay are
going to be character witnesses because they are at the
scene of the crime every single time. Darnell Wright was
mauling people at right tackle and Roma Dunze is blocking
his tail off. And so there, what was the keys?

Speaker 1 (33:02):
I'll say this, Ben Johnson emptied the book. I mean
you could draw I could draw up eight different runs.
I don't care if it was pinning.

Speaker 3 (33:09):
Pull, toss crack.

Speaker 1 (33:11):
I was watching Tuney on an inside trap like they
ran every run probably in their playbook at at Cincinnati.

Speaker 3 (33:18):
But you know they ran the ball a lot though.

Speaker 2 (33:20):
So yeah, by the way, Baldy, is there anything better
than just just toss crack? Is there anything better on planet?

Speaker 3 (33:27):
My favorite play in the NFL?

Speaker 1 (33:28):
Right, And if you get somebody that can pin it
the way a doom is a good blocker at the
point you need a guy that can that can handle
that block. You get that, you get these guys. At
one point it was like rookies on prey. It was
Stil Benedict, it was Colston Lovelin. Here comes to anung
guy and I'm like, man.

Speaker 3 (33:45):
That's dude. Good for your draft class. Right now.

Speaker 2 (33:49):
There's three plays, Bucky in this game. There's three plays
where if if you squint and you see Darnel Wright
get to the third level, he looks like Pina Sew
like when he's he gets runs like that. Like I
can see Ben Johnson kind of looking at some things
going Okay, if I got a right tackle that can
kind of move like that, I got some I got
some things I can have some fun with here.

Speaker 4 (34:10):
Look, man, the offensive line has been the main thing
when it came to the Bears, and some of that
is a litt replace about bringing people in.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
Another part is is get the guys to play better.

Speaker 4 (34:18):
Donnill Wright is one of those guys when you talk
about coming out of Tennessey, he'd had some nastiness to them.

Speaker 3 (34:22):
It was just a matter of directing it in the
right way.

Speaker 2 (34:25):
What I like, I feel like the light just came on,
Like I just remember thinking, am I crazy?

Speaker 3 (34:29):
Balldy?

Speaker 2 (34:29):
I just remember thinking like he was kind of fining
his way and struggling.

Speaker 1 (34:32):
I watched this game year banged up a little bit,
and then last year he was he was off.

Speaker 3 (34:36):
He was just off.

Speaker 1 (34:37):
But I feel like the way that they're getting trained
right now, in the emphasis on the run and the
toughness that they're displaying, like they can compete in this
division right now.

Speaker 3 (34:47):
Now.

Speaker 1 (34:47):
Defensively, they like it wasn't good, you know, But I
don't know, like why can't Why can't they go after
it right now? The way that they're they can run
the ball, They've done it with swift, without swift, they're
doing it with three tight ends, two tight ends, extra tackles, rookies.

Speaker 3 (35:03):
I mean, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (35:05):
It's a pretty good look at coaching job right now.
Penalties are way down offensively, Buck.

Speaker 2 (35:09):
When you were with teams, when you had a coach
come in that had been elsewhere, did you ever have
guys that were showing you tape from the old place
and saying like, hey, you with your skill set, like
this is you like you can.

Speaker 3 (35:19):
Do what we did with this player?

Speaker 4 (35:21):
Yeah, Because they're trying to get you to picture yourself
in their thing, and so they'll show you someone who
they believe has a similar skill set and they hey,
if you just do this, this is how we could
feature you in this system. And there has to be
some carryover because one the Chicago players saw what Detroit
looked like when they were getting molly wopped by them.
They understood what Detroit came with. So when Ben Johnson

(35:44):
comes over and talks about, hey, we can do this
same kind of transformation here, they believe it. And being
able to talk about that crossover dniel Wright and Pinney
sewel and look at this and look at that, and
you have similar traits and let's get some of this done. Yeah,
I believe It's believable. It's part of the sale job
that every head coach has to do with this team.

Speaker 1 (36:05):
And you know, to that point, Bucket, it's a great
point because you're watching, like you thinking about aman Ros
Saint Brown and Detroit and how he blocks, how he's
a part of it, you know, and you're looking at
a Doonsa, You're looking at Zequias like these guys, it
looks like they want to go block. They want to
go get a piece of somebody. And it's not like
they're just sealing somebody in the outside, like they're digging

(36:26):
guys out on these fold blocks coming up and you know,
taking on safeties and stuff like. It's it's it's it's
all inclusive when it comes to that.

Speaker 2 (36:35):
It's a freaky Friday vibe to it. Man and the
like switching places because I'm watching Colson Loveland and watched
all his targets and I'm like, well, this looks Samula
Porta the way he's stretching the field and hitting seams
and bouncing off guys and run away from everybody. I'm like, well, yeah,
they've got the blueprint, like they've already had this type
of player. So that's why they're finally starting to unleash
him a little bit. And he's making some plays where

(36:55):
you can win quick in the flat or you can
wait and Caleb Caleb, there was and I know there's
every week we can do this with Kayla, but every
week there's a couple of gosh, you'd like to have
that throwback or this throwback look at the end of
the game when they need to make a big throw.
That was a freaking steed that he threw on that touchdown.
I mean that thing was a missile.

Speaker 3 (37:16):
Show.

Speaker 2 (37:16):
Yeah, it's there. It's it's all in there, and I
think you could be excited by watching him what he's
done there. Let's get one more game and then we'll
let Baldi get running here, Baldy Carolina, Green Bay. I'd
say the most shocking game to me for the weekend.

Speaker 1 (37:29):
Well, my favorite, my favorite thing to do every week
here in the film rooms, watch Derek Brown just take
grown men and just throw them like he's taking Sean
Ryan and he's taking these offensive linemen from the from
the Packers and he's literally just tossed him. The first
play of the game, he makes a play. He rushed
to the pass where he beats a double team. He

(37:50):
doubles back and he makes a play on the other
side of the field like he's the first one to
the ball. But I would say, if you're looking at
what they're doing now, they actually have Rose Boom had
an unbelievable game. Fifteen tackles to the front. Skirton right
now and the whole group Wharton like they are physical

(38:10):
at the point they like they got after Jordan Love.
There was a reason why they had six points on
the board. They stopped them on fourth down, They stopped
the big play they busted. You know, Christian watched it
over the middle a couple of times, like it didn't
look like you wanted to get up, Like they looked
like a completely different defense than what we saw like
the week before or some other games. But like they

(38:31):
looked well coached to me on defense right now. That
was the difference of the game.

Speaker 3 (38:36):
No doubt.

Speaker 2 (38:37):
I watched Rose Boom stuffcause when I see somebody that's
fifteen tackles, I'm like, okay, let me see what he's
got going on. Just really good instincts. Man, Like, you
don't get that type of production unless your eyes work
really really well. I didn't think there was anything where,
you know, they were physical upfront. I didn't think he
was overwhelming anybody physically, like just coming down and thumping
off guys. But if you can sift and sort and

(38:58):
you can beat guys the spots, you can a lot
of production. And he did it in this game. And
then the other thing that stood out when Dabble goes
twenty five a buck thirty. I went through and watched
all his runs, and this offenseive line is built to
run and people are gonna say, oh, you know, Bryce
is only thrown for one hundred yards or what have you. Like,
This is the formula every team buck. We talk about
this all the time. Every team has their own formula

(39:19):
win games. It's different for everybody. This is their formula.
It's not them chucking the ball over the place. It's
them with an offensive line built to run, block in
a good back and Tremble blocks his tail off at
tight end. He is a physical, physical kid. Lewis has
turning and he's an excellent run blocker. Ikwanu's much better
in the run game than he is in the past game.
He's moving people. I had to look up a couple

(39:41):
of numbers because I didn't realize that Corbett was playing
center for him. He did a nice job getting up
to the second level. And Yosh Nijmann. Am I saying that?
Am I saying that?

Speaker 3 (39:50):
Right? He was?

Speaker 2 (39:50):
He played well right tackle in the run game? But
they they I mean that was a cause of concern
for me. If I'm a fan of Green Bay and
I'm watching this game, and I'm going like, tell you
what man to get out of the NFC, Whereas in
the a f C, it was like you got to
run the quarterback in the NFC, like you're gonna get
punched in the face every round in the playoffs, like
you better be physical enough to handle it. And this

(40:12):
is watching this game, I was like, oh no, man,
that gave me a little concern for green Bay.

Speaker 3 (40:16):
Buck.

Speaker 4 (40:17):
Yeah, so he My frustration with Green Bay stands not
only from the team being inconsistent playing up or down
two levels of competition, but also like Jordan Love and
some of the decisions that he makes put the ball,
particularly in the day interception that he threw is ridiculous
like that.

Speaker 3 (40:31):
I mean, like I don't know what we're doing.

Speaker 1 (40:33):
Like just those things was hitting them in the mouth
when he went through that ball, you know, to get rid.

Speaker 3 (40:40):
Of the rock.

Speaker 1 (40:41):
But I just like he should have throw another one
to Michael Jackson. The endine he dropped. He was all
by himself. He was a horrible throat, just scrambling, you know.

Speaker 4 (40:48):
Yeah. And so the Packers are a title team on paper,
but I don't know if they have the maturity and
to know how to be able to get it because
these games, the games against the Browns, like you can't
lose these games if you're a title team, because one
title teams take care of business, stay secure. That they're

(41:08):
going to play all the games at their home field,
and the Packers are letting these games slips. Credit to
the Panthers, but this shouldn't be a game where when
you're a thirteen point favorite, that you allow a team
to knock you up.

Speaker 1 (41:20):
I don't know if you watch this, I didn't see
any contributes from Matthew Campbell in this game.

Speaker 2 (41:25):
DJ. I just see like like he was any kind
of a factor. I didn't watch them on that side, Okay.
I watched their defense look like they were going to
look like they were a middleweight that showed up to
a heavyweight fight and got surprised. I mean they just
moving them. They were moving them at the line of scrimmage.

Speaker 3 (41:41):
So yeah, but.

Speaker 2 (41:42):
Matthew Gold, I mean he was my top receiver. I
was excited to see how, you know, they were going
to use him and what they were going to do
with him. That could be a project for me this week.
Maybe I'll pop that in and see what he looks like.
But hey, hats off to Carolina maybe the most surprising
team before that. They said there was a meme going
around with them, and did you see that one buck?
There was a funny thing on social media. That was

(42:02):
a picture of Tiger Woods and John Daily and it
had under under Tiger Woods, it had the Chiefs five
and four and John Daily it had the Panthers five
and four. But hey, we're both golfers, man, we're the same,
just us. It might look a little different, it might
look a little different, but we go, same guy, same guy.

(42:22):
All right, Hey, this has been fun, Baldi. Enjoy each
and every week. Man, We see you next time. Appreciate you,
all right, buck there he goes. Always fun to have
Baldi on the show. As we ripped through these games,
we'll we'll catch up on the rest of these other
games in the next episode. And uh, and keep this
week rolling as we are headed into gosh, we are
in week ten of the NFL season. How the heck

(42:44):
did that get here so fast? And hey, it's been
five minutes so another I'm sure another college coach has
been fired. Well again, Holy Holy. We'll touch on that
next time right here on movie sticks,

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
