Speaker 3 (00:46):
From the Wolverine, Chris Balash joins us to talk a
little bit about Michigan and Washington that's coming up. By
the way, it's the forty fifth anniversary of a rose
ball team that included Stanley Edwards, so they will be
there and they will be honored. And you can follow
Chris and it's rate follow at ballast Underschool Worlverene Chris Hope,
you and your family are well, my friend, It's great
to have you back on the program. How big do
(01:07):
you think this game is for Sharon Moore and Michigan
for this season and this season alone, because they should
be favored in the next five games, and you know
then Ohio State. I guess you can throw it just
anything when it comes to rivalries, But as far as
you know, a really important turning point, how big do
you think it is?
Speaker 4 (01:24):
Yeah? Huge chip, And you talk about this season and
this season alone, and a lot of other people are
saying this is a huge game for Sharon Moore and
his era right in the direction of the program. And
I don't know if that's fair yet or not, but
I will say this, the way they played at USC,
the way they played at Oklahoma, this is kind of
now the tipping point game, right. If you lose this game,
you are out of the pick playoff picture. It's already
(01:46):
you know, faint hopes, but you're out of the playoff picture.
You're out of the Big ten chase. And what do
you have to play for other than maybe beating Ohio
State at the end of the year. So it's everything,
and you know, they've really got to They've really got
to play better on both sides of the ball. Ships
one or the other. Offense has been really leaky. On
the offensive line, the defense has been disappointing. So and
Washington's dangerous. So this game, yeah, this is everything.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
I said this on Tuesday. I think Big Ten fans
and Big Ten players fancying themselves as physical, right SEC
We always talk about their speed. Big ten teams are
supposed to be physical, and I know USC is now
in the Big Ten, but I thought USC was the
much more physical team. I thought they beat Michigan up.
Do you concur with that, and if so, how do
(02:31):
you think Michigan takes that as a slight.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
Yeah, one hundred percent. And I was talking to John
Jansen about this yesterday, Michigan's former All American lineman, and
he said that was what was the most disappointing part
of it. When you look at the defense. This front
seven was supposed to be really one of the best
in the country, at least one of the best in
the Big Ten, and they were hat on hat just
getting beat by the USC offensive line. And that shouldn't
happen when you think of USC, right and these Pac
(02:55):
twelve teams or PAC ten teams, whatever former Pac ten teams,
you think finesse right, and you should be able to
bully them and other teams have you look at what
Illinois did against them and put up i think five
hundred yards of offense and you're thinking, okay' at least
it's going to be a shootout because this Michigan offensive
line is going to be able to push them around,
maybe like they did against Nebraska on the road, Chef,
(03:16):
but that wasn't the case. And give you USC credit.
They came out and Lincoln Riley said, look, we saw
this as our red letter game. This is the one
that we really knew we really needed to win to
keep all of our hopes alive and to keep our
season going on the right track. And they took the
fight to them. But it wasn't just that they were faster,
which we expected right at some of the skill positions.
(03:36):
At skill positions, excuse me. It was that they were
more physical on both sides of the ball, and that
was really the most disappointing part of the game. So
I think this is a manhood game for Michigan, and
I think they've been challenged and Sharon Moore pretty much
said as much. He said, Hey, we're going to see
what we're made of on Saturday. These guys need to respond.
And you get another team coming in here playing good
football in Washington that's really kind of got a similar
(03:58):
formula in an outstanding court. So it's going to be
very interesting to see how they do on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Yeah, Husky's five and one coming coming in. I don't
think they necessarily have a marquee win. I think Maryland's
a decent team and they beat Maryland. They got blown
out by Ohio State. What will be most important do
you think from Michigan on Saturday afternoon?
Speaker 4 (04:16):
Yeah, contained Den Williams Junior. That quarterback is fantastic. This
kid put up five hundred and something the yards and
he can get to the edge. Michigan has not been
good at setting the edge this year, and that's something
that they've got to work on. If they let him
get outside the pocket ship, then they're in trouble. This
guy makes plays when he gets outside the pocket. He's
only like five to eleven, but he's so dangerous because
(04:37):
he's so quick and if he gets out, then okay,
he's got a guy that can run. He got a
guy that can keep his head downfield and watch and
find receivers. So he's been fantastic. That's going to be
the key to this game. That and in my opinion,
running the football. This is not a big front for Washington.
Michigan has got to be able to run the football
(04:58):
on this team. They weren't able to do it against us.
If they can, it's going to be a long day.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
I want to get your thoughts on so many things
that are taking place in college football, and I know
we've got a shorter period of time. Chris Ballace joining
us from the Wolverine fall him on Twitter at ballast
Underscore Wolverine. He's joining us on the Lindsay Hunter Foundation
guest line. Kurt Signetti just signed an eight year, ninety
three million dollar extension for Indiana. Good for the Hoosiers, right,
I mean, this is the way college football is trending.
(05:25):
They why did they think now is the time that
they had to do this?
Speaker 4 (05:29):
Yeah, at number one, you look at Penn State opening
up and he is the hottest name in college football.
This guy is not a flash in the pan. This
is one of the best coaches in football in my opinion,
and if you watch them against Orgon, you're thinking, Okay,
what school is he going to go to next? In fact,
that's all we were talking about in the press box
last week was where's Kurt Signetti going to be next year? Indiana?
Give them credit right for locking him up and saying, Okay,
(05:51):
we're going to be serious about football. You know, they
haven't been a basketball school for a while now, step
so why not football? And here he is. That team
looks like what your team, what you want your team
to look like in the big time. That's what Yeah, honestly,
you're kind of jealous if you're a Michigan fan, thinking, okay,
that's what Michigan looked like under Jim Harbaugh for three years.
So I think that's exactly why they've They've proven they're
(06:14):
serious now about football. And give them credit. I said
this yesterday, congrats to Indiana because I think they locked
up one of the best coaches in football for a
long time.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
So the next name is Matt Ruhle Nebraska. I think
the next big contract extension comes there because of his
lineage to Penn State, don't.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
You I do, except that I think he loves Penn State,
and it wouldn't surprise me if he ended up there.
You know, obviously he's from there, he knows the ad,
and I think he secretly wants that job. So we'll see.
If they do not get a deal done for him
a chef, then I do think you're going to see
him as the next Penn State head coach. I think
it's the fifth that they want, you know, and everybody
(06:50):
thinks they want that guy, right like Michigan with Jim Harbaugh,
guy who played here and Scott frosted Nebraska. You don't
know until it happens, and I don't know if rule
would be successful, but I think they believe he would
be and that he gets that place right that kind
of a thing, So that would not shock made all
if he ended up at Penn State.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
I would like your thoughts on just where college football
is with their coaches and the short temperament fan bases,
regions ads may have with them. Right now, you had
mentioned it's a big game for Sharon Moore against Washington.
People of Michigan State feel like this is a turning
point season for Jonathan Smith, and yet it would be
(07:29):
only year two for both these men. Where are we
at in that when in the college atmosphere, and how
unfair do you think it is, whether we like it
or not.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
Yeah, there are no more three or five year rebuilds,
is what it's come down to, because it's free agency
in college football, right. And you look at Bryce Underwood
for example, and Michigan flat out bought him away from LSU.
We can spin it any way we want to, but
that's exactly what happened. And you are expected to build
a team unfortunately affair or not. Rather you look at
what Signette did at Indiana. That's what everybody thinks the
(08:01):
norm should be. Right. This guy comes in and all
of a sudden builds a winner in year one. If
you don't win in year two, now you are on
the hot seat. And I think it wouldn't surprise me
at all if Michigan State went in a different direction.
If that program continues to go downhill even after two years,
now there is no patience anymore. Is it fair? I
don't know, but I do know that's the sign of
(08:22):
the times, right that if you don't win now, then
they're going to try to find somebody else who will,
especially if you have the money and you're spending it
on your roster like Michigan. If you look at the
boosters that have stepped up and now are paying essentially
for players, they expect a return on their investmentship. So
I don't think it's fair. But at the same time,
I understand it.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Quick curveball two billion, two point four billion dollar private
equity team wanting to be part of the Big Ten
in Michigan. Regents have a problem with it. What's the
biggest issue in your mind?
Speaker 4 (08:53):
Yeah, I think what they are saying is that number one,
Michigan doesn't need to do this right, and you're basically
doveling the playing field for everybody else in the Big
ten when you can excel on your own. And I
think USC feels the same way too, and I appreciate that. Right,
it's just another step in the wrong direction for college athletics, Right,
you're kind of selling your soul shep and Michigan feels like, Okay,
(09:17):
we've got the resources that we can do this without
having to share with everybody. It's almost like the TV deal, Right.
I think Michigan and Ohio State feel like, Okay, we
generate more money than anybody, why are we splitting this equally,
so I think they have a problem with that. I
think you're going to see them continue to fight it.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Although Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State allegedly we're going
to have more money coming their way than anybody else.
But right now, that exactly is is the issue. It's
great information through a lot at you, love reading your stuff,
love talking to you as always, my friend, miss seen
you in person. Hope you and the family stay. We'll
have a great weekend, buddy.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
