Speaker 1 (00:00):
Grade the tiger's trade activity ABC or D.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
That's all we want to know.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
Don't stop with.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
A failing grade.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Maybe failed your expectations, but they needed to address certain
things and they did.

Speaker 3 (00:16):
Failing grade would have been doing nothing. So if you're
that disappointed.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
We're getting rid of or getting rid of some of
your high end prospects for a guy who's not going
to be making it.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Yeah, like gett quote unquote fleeced. That would be an
f but agreed, So I up here that way.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Don't give me the F stuff. I don't think it's necessary.
I'd be stunned if anybody voted A. My guess is
people will say, well, at least they did something, and
at least they addressed a couple of needs. I wanted
them to get a starting pitcher, they did. They got two.
I wanted them to get some bullpen help. They did,

(00:53):
even the ones on the IL and another is in
Triple A. And oh and by the way, Cody Hoyer,
who's in triple A. So they traded for a few
bullpen arms tour in triple A Dobneck and Hoyer, and
another one's on the sixty dail. That has people shaking

(01:16):
their heads and rightfully so very odd. Anyway, that's the
pole question, the mitche Lions well pole question. Vote as
often as you like. We put it out on Twitter
at XP mornings, I'll retweet it and we will give
you the results on Monday morning. Speaking of Mitchellons, he's
going to join us at seventy eighteen to talk about
the Lions' preseason game and his takeaways. Can you take

(01:39):
anything away and the level of concern you might have
and if it is real, then perhaps when somebody looks
at it and says these guys aren't very good. If
you and I are saying it, we're probably overreacting. But
there's some legitimacy in some of it. What do you
think the front office is saying? So we'll talk about

(01:59):
all that with Mitchellans seven eighteen. Let's get to a text.
It's a baseball text first and foremost. Trent read away.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
With all these pitchers Scott Harris traded for yesterday and today,
I'm assuming this was saying yesterday, expect a whole lot
more of pitching chaos days.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
Yes, well said or well placed, well typed texted, whatever
you want to say. Agreed, that's what's going to happen
outside of Errek's school. But this doesn't surprise me. It doesn't.
And the reason it doesn't surprise me is because, well,
the way baseball is today, but also because when you're

(02:38):
getting these guys Charlie Morton and Chris Paddock, you're trying
to get through six innings because they're not used to
going longer than that. I don't think Toronto's probably a
whole lot different. They picked up Shane Bieber, and Bieber's
rehabbing from Tommy John, but he's deeper and deeper from

(03:01):
rehabbing from Tommy John and should be able to help them.
So yeah, I think that's exactly what's going to happen.
I think you're going to see tiger starters. You're gonna
do everything you can to get them through five or
six innings, and then you're gonna rely heavily on that bullpit.
There's only a certain number of arms you can carry thirteen,

(03:21):
so I don't know how much more, but with these guys,
because you have so many different options and you have
some different arm angles and so on and so forth. Yes,
that's exactly what aj Hinch and company are going to do.
And you know maybe people are excited.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
About that, and with how bad the bullpen was during
that three week stretch there in July, they clearly just
wanted to shake things up, and I commend them for
at least doing that. I hope people can at least
find some solace in that. Yes, it can be disappointing,
but it can also know.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
What I was gonna say, doing miss shake up, I
don't think they were looking to quote unquote shake things up.
Are looking to improve it. Period. You've got to improve
the bullpen. Did they improve the bullpen?

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Yes? Or no?

Speaker 1 (04:09):
Do you think they improved the bullpen with Rafael Montero
and Kyle Finnigan and Paul Seawell won't be there. Do
you feel like they have improved it with those two
players because those are the two guys.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
Right, yep? And I would say marginally yes.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
If I said to you, I'm going to add a
guy with a five and a half ERA and a
one point two seven whip, is that an improvement.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
I would pass. It was just a blind taste test.
That's Montero.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
Yeah, Finnegan was he got twenty one of twenty six
save opportunities, So that jumps out at.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
You it's pretty good.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
Yeah, it's it's pretty good. He's not the ideal guy
I wanted. It made me, it made me happy. But
I wanted David Bednar. As you know, Yankees went out
and got him. Yankees had enough currency to go get
David Bednar. Tigers could have gotten him without surrendering their
top five guys.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Okay, And that's the concerning thing.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Because the teams that you're quote unquote in an arm
race with in the al they all got better.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
You know, Houston got better, The Yankees got.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
Better, without question, the Yankees felt and I think I
think not enough is made. I think Brian Cashman's a
good general manager, and not enough is made of how
he gets his job done. I know they haven't won
a World Series in a long time, and I know
people in New York gets pissed off about that, and

(05:40):
I know people outside New York look at it, go, well,
that would be an easy job. You can spend as
much money easy you really need to. Hal Steinbrenner is
a lot different than George Steinbrenner. Hal Steinbender is the
guy who's actually come out spoken about peeling back spending
for the Yankees. So in order to do your job
as a general man. You better be a little bit

(06:01):
more creative than those gms in the past. Okay, this
is not Gene Michael and having the keys to the
car back when George Steinbrenner was the main guy. So
Brian Cashman goes out and I think he greatly improved
his team. He went and got Ryan McMahon and others. Okay,

(06:24):
but they needed a third baseman. They went out and
got one. How good he's going to be.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
We'll see.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
His numbers were not flattering going to New York, but
he's a good player. He's not going to make you
forget Greg Nettles, but he's a good player. Getting David
Bednar isn't going to make you forget you know, Ron
Guidry or Mariano Rivera or Goose Goasig, but he's a

(06:54):
quality closer. Aaron Boone finding out we just picked up
David Bednar was smiling without question. Okay. There were others
that you really would have liked, quite honestly, other than
Kyle Finnegan. But he was one of those guys. If

(07:14):
you were listening to in the Den yesterday, what you
play it back? The names I listed Finnigan's one of them.
It was worth it, Okay, so I like that addition.

(07:34):
Other than that, I wasn't really thrilled. I was hoping
for more and I think most and I don't try.
You know me, I don't think I'm an unrealistic guy.
I didn't think they were gonna go out and trade
for Paul Skins. Okay, I'm not gonna sit there and
go well, if I were them, I just approached Philadelphia

(07:56):
and go get Zach Wheeler, right. No, I wanted a
guy who could pitch at the top of your rotation. Obviously,
the Tigers feel differently about their team. How do they feel?
They feel like, you know what, We're good enough carry
Carpenter's back and healthy and ready to roll. We think

(08:18):
Matt Vierling might be showing some signs of a guy
who we think Chris Paddock can deliver what we need.
And they held on to a lot of their assets.
I wonder if people look at Scott Harris similar to
how they look at Steve Wiserman. Steve Wiserman has tried

(08:45):
to make trades without question, but is tentative when it
comes to his system. His farm system. He has spent
a lot of capital on his draft picks, and he's
proud of that. Of course, these are the same guys,
kind of guys who will tell people there's a reason

(09:07):
you acquire so much young talent. You can trade it
away and get some experienced talent at the right time.
The phrase that bothers me is, well the Tigers next year.
The Tigers are already really are really going to go
for it because they know they've got a chance. Or

(09:29):
next year is the year they could you can really
figure out what you have and don't have and go
after it. To me, makes no sense. I heard some
people tell me that yesterday on a couple of different occasions.
How is next year different than this year? Tell me
why you couldn't go get Merrill Kelly this year, but

(09:50):
you've got you might have an opportunity to get him
next year. That's ridiculous. You don't know what the other
teams are going to do in the offseason. Number one,
I mean Texas went and got him. That's a really
good pickup. He's going to be their number two or
three starter for the Texas Rangers. Their starting pitchings good.

(10:13):
It wasn't last night, but they're starting pitchings good. So
the question, you know, you have to ask, are you
too tentative? What are you waiting for when the young guys,
When they see the young guys progress, that's when they're
going to go for it. What How wide open? Do

(10:35):
you think the American League is as wide open as
it was a year ago? Right? I think so? Could
you argue that all of baseball is wide open?

Speaker 2 (10:48):
Yes,
