Speaker 1 (00:00):
Every Monday we do Hero and Heel. It is where
we choose who had the best and worst weekends or weeks.
It doesn't have to be sports related. If you wanted
to bring somebody else in, that's fine. It could be
a player, it could be an organization. It could be
a league, it could be a franchise, it could be
a fan base. It could be whatever you want it
to be. We're looking for the hero and the heel

(00:24):
of the week. We start with heroes. For me, it's
Cal Riley hit two homers Friday night. We've talked about
it this morning. Thirty eight at the break. That's an
American League record, second most ever behind Barry Bonds, who
had thirty nine. Already has a career high in homers,
already has a career high in war and will fly

(00:47):
by the career high in RBIs as well. He'll most
likely set a Major League record for number of home
runs by an American League catcher that is currently held
by Salva or Perez.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
That's a surprise you, but Salvador Perez had.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Forty eight in twenty twenty one, not all as a catcher,
sometimes as a DH, but most as a catcher. He's
seen as a catcher, so they give him them forty eight,
just like when Johnny Bench held the previous record, but
all weren't as you know, as a catcher. Sometimes I
think he played a little bit of first base just
to get off, you know, the haunches I could have chosen,

(01:25):
Chris got her up, who beat Rory McElroy had to
head Sunday for his second career.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
PGA Tour win. That was cool. Yeah, a guy who played.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
Twelve years of lacrosse out of Maryland started to play
in golf or was a golfer at Rutgers. It was
a steely display of nerve all day, all weekend really
from him at the Scottish Opening, which on round two
on Friday, he shot a course tying record sixty one.
But I decided to go with Raleigh. I didn't see

(01:54):
this coming. I don't think anybody saw it coming. Bout
I said to you before the season began that Cal Raley,
who would be the home run leader in Major League
Baseball with thirty eight? Before the All Star break, you
would have said, who, I think it's three straight years
now for this guy with thirty homers or more.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
He's my hero.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
Very nice and unfortunately for the Tigers. Hey for the
victim of your hero over the weekend? Yeah my hero
And I say this through gritted teeth as a spartan myself,
but I'm going to give it to the University of
Michigan athletics. Did you see this chef over the weekend?
Pretty cool stuff. The Wolverines became the first athletic department
ever to have a first round selection in the drafts

(02:36):
of each of the four main sports. You had Danny
Wolf in the NBA, Mason Graham in the NFL, Will
Horkoff in the NHL, and last night, Mitch Voight the
Young arm He goes thirty eighth overall to the New
York Mets, and Michigan becomes the first school to ever
have a player selected in the first round of each
of the four major drafts.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
Pretty cool, It's very cool. Can I be technical? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (03:00):
Are you gonna say the thirty eighth overall?

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (03:03):
I knew you're gonna go there.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
Yeah yeah, yeah. Yeah. It's it's not fair. That's it's
it's a first round.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Okay, it's well, it's more than it's more selections than
there are teams in the league. Yes, yes, it's technically
it is a first round choice, So yeah, let's can
we just give it to him and not be such
a jerk about it. So that's it I'm trying to
avoid here, But it is a competitive balance pick, all right.

(03:33):
So whatever either way, that's a very cool thing, and
that's great education for everybody. You know what, Let's just
remind everybody Trent. We don't see him anymore. He doesn't
put himself on camera like he used to. Where's I
would say of the five days in the three and
a half days, is at least Michigan State because he's.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Proud of his alma mater and he should be.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Oh yeah, So for him to acknowledge Michigan tells you
that it had to be something special and it was
so good for you.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
I like that.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
Here's my heel. It's Major League Baseball. Major League Baseball
picked rookie Jake Mazarowski to replace Matthew Boyd on the
National League All Star roster, which is disappointed. I mean,
it would have been nice to have Matthew Boyd there.
The twenty three year old starting just five games for Milwaukee.
Now he's gotten a good number. He's four and one

(04:25):
with a two point eighty three ERA, but Christopher Sanchez
has started twelve games, has the fourth lowest ERA in
the National League. I mean, there are a number of
qualified starters here. Nick Pavetta of the Padres. He's nine
to two with a one point zero four whip. Robert

(04:45):
Suarez leads the National League in saves.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
It's very strange. In fact, the Phillies.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
They talk to the Phillies about this a little bit,
and it's really too bad. I don't know the exact
reason for it. I don't know if anybody does. But
Christopher Sanchez, who started yesterday, has been really, really good,
and I would argue, very disturbing, deserving Trey Turner, who

(05:15):
could have been chosen to by the way, he said,
it's a joke. He said, it's effing terrible. J t Rilimuto,
Just how does MLB do it? Now? Nothing against Misarowski
the kid, but Sanchez and Suarez are deserving of being
on this team in the first place. There's no doubt
Nick Costiano said this about Major League Baseball, and say

(05:38):
what you want about Nick COSTIOSI has never been afraid
to share his opinion. He said, it's turning into the
Savannah bananas. That's what he said about yeah, about major
League Baseball, that that is a massive insult.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Bananas are entertaining, But that is an insult because it's
not real baseball.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
Big time right.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
Turner said, It's not the All Star Game in the
sense that the best players go where people have had
their best seasons. It's whoever sells the most tickets or
has been put on social media the most. Well, okay,
if I'm doing that interview, I'm saying, hold on a second.
You've got a ton of guys who are saying I'm
not going Hi. Max Freed, which is fine. You know,
he steps aside. Carlos Rodin comes in. Don't give me that.

(06:22):
Don't give me that. It's the guys with the social
media posts. Hobby or Biaz isn't on social media, all right,
Labor Torres isn't on social media that I.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
See, at least on certain social media channels.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
Give me a break, dude. Look are there guys more deserving. Absolutely,
you want to be pissed off about it. You want
to figure out why MLB did it the way they do.
I don't blame you. Miss Rowski is not selling tickets.
People aren't going. I am now going to Atlanta because
a dude who's got five starts in place for the
Milwaukee Brewers, of which I hardly know anybody on that team, I.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Want to see him pitch.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
Yeah, that's pretty bad, however, and yes, people have a
tendency to go overboard, but some of this stuff is
worth talking about. I would just remind him and other
members of the Phillies that there's a lot of guys
who are choosing not to go. Castiano said, major League

(07:26):
Baseball is really just focusing on the most marketable players.
Zach Wheeler didn't go. He pulled out. He didn't want
to disrupt his pitching routine. He could have been there.
Matthew Boyd could have been there. Max Freed could have
been there. There are guys who are saying no to
the honor.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Now.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
Does it have anything to do with Sanchez making an
extra fifty grand or so in his contract?

Speaker 2 (07:52):
I doubt it.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
And if it is, that's really petty by Major League
Baseball in the Phillies. I don't think a team that's
spent as much money as it has on its free aig,
whether it be Trey Turner or Bryce Harper or whomever
is worried about the fifty grand, But there are other
guys who should be going instead of this rookie based

(08:13):
on their performance.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
Who's your heel?

Speaker 3 (08:15):
Totally agree with you, my heel quickly before break. In
the world of baseball, the Tigers have been talked about
a lot, and deservedly so. So this isn't a homer
pick or an overreaction when we lean so heavily on
baseball this time of year. This is fair. You'd be
hard pressed to find a team that had a worse
weekend than the Detroit Tigers. In fact, I'd say it'd
be impossible to find a team. And I'm not talking
about just the forty hits and three games for the

(08:37):
Mariners or thirty five runs in three games are getting
swept at home. No, not even just that their draft
picks were also widely panned by those who apparently know
what they're talking about. Time will tell with that, of course,
But oof, you roll it all together. Tiger's with a
big old thud heading into the All Star break.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
Yeah, and you're right about You're right about the weekend.
I would just remind folk there was there was this
series against Now there was a stretch for the Dodgers
where they lost seven in a row, eighteen to one,
nine to one, five to one. You know, it wasn't
it wasn't thirty five fourteen, but they gave up a

(09:16):
lot of runs and they didn't look good doing it.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
It happens, but we got to call it out when
we see that, because we give the Tigers a lot
of credit when they when they went.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
Hundred percent, and I give you credit for doing just
that too. It's, uh, it might be a little bit
of an unpopular one, but so what it's It's how
you feel, and I think other people are feeling very similar.
