Speaker 1 (00:00):
I think these first call it ten days is going
to tell us a lot. You know, by the time
we get to the Hall of Fame game, and then
the competition is still open at that point, like man
working these guards and then you know who is playing center.
But I think it's kind of a two part deal.
We've got an open competition, guys competing, you know, certainly
tat it center. We're working him in there, see how
fast he can get it. I know it's only day one,

(00:21):
look much better than even spring, you know, so getting
his feet under him. But as I've said before, we
know Graham can slide right in right now and we
don't miss a beat. So keep playing with it. You know.
It's kind of exciting.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Really, that's Dan Campbell from practice yesterday. Good stuff. It
is exciting. But it's also this is all in the
eyes of the older, isn't it. And if it's exciting
for some, it's a little nerve racking for others.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
I was going to say exciting is a creative way
to say, question Mark.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Yeah, it is it. It's exciting when you're trying out
new kickoff and punt returners. You know, it's really it's
nerve wracking for me. When you're changing three fifths of
your offensive line and the undertone of your defensive captain

(01:16):
being unhappy without a contract extension, things can snowball quickly.
Doesn't take much. Interior defensive line problems, interior offensive line problems,
defensive captain unhappy, disappointed. Maybe unhappy is a little strong.
It's not like he left the state like Trey Hendrickson did. Supposedly,

(01:40):
Trey Hendrickson said, I'm out of here, see you later, Ohio.
Have a good one. Not the right way to handle
the situation. No, Terry mclaurin's going to be thirty years old, right,
thirty years old. Nine receivers make thirty million dollars a year.
That's going to be the floor for Terry McLaurin. He's

(02:00):
not gonna get done in Washington like you, and I
don't care about that. I don't expect you to you
and I don't care that. Trey Hendrickson has left the
state of Ohio, even though the owner there, Mike Brown,
has said we want him to be a Bengal. It
doesn't seem like he's getting forty million, does It? Sure
doesn't seem like that to me. Not from them or

(02:24):
even thirty five, like Max Crosby's getting Michah Parson says
he's gonna get his. For some reason, the Cowboys always
seemed to wait till the last minute. Ezekiel Elliott, Dak Prescott,
C D Lamb, Michaeh Parsons isn't happy.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
Which is just so stupid because they always end up
I don't want to say overpaying, but they pay more
than they would have to if they would just meet
the market value early on in the negotiation process.

Speaker 4 (02:55):
I don't get it.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
Yeah, they constantly shoot themselves in the foot, the Cowboys,
but I don't.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Know what that is. Would you have extended Parsons before
this year? I mean I probably would have been I
want to absolute beast. Okay, And could you have gotten him,
like for the Max Crosby dealt the timing, You're right,
the timing is everything. How much are you really saving yourself?

(03:19):
I don't I don't know, man, this is one of
those situations. I think he's an awesome player, man, I
think he's one of the best there is in football.
So I want him on my team and I'd extend
him without a doubt. But a lot of times when
you extend players, something happens and you're the idiot, or

(03:41):
you're you're not winning with them.

Speaker 4 (03:43):
Or they're hurt.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
You know. I mean, well, with all due respect to
my Cap Parsons, and you know how I feel about him,
what if the Cowboys won with him?

Speaker 4 (03:50):
Nothing?

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Just out of curiosity, Like we'll associate that with Dak Prescott,
don't we because we don't think he's worth the money
or a lot of people don't. I don't, not sixty.
I don't think you do either. I mean you're not
a huge fan, right, And what's the ultimate? I gotcha,
what's the ultimate? Saying they haven't won anything with him?

(04:11):
Have they won anything with Michah Parsons?

Speaker 4 (04:14):
I think the division once that's it.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
Have they have they won anything with CD Lamb? You're right,
they've got twelve wins in back to back years. But
Dak Prescott was part of that too, and you don't
want to give him credit. Yeah, but you're gonna you're
gonna say, well, they did win it with Michaeh Parsons
and CD. WHOA hold on a second, Wait a minute,
Dak Prescott was part of that too.

Speaker 4 (04:36):
Mike McCarthy wants too, they canned him.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Amen. So I mean there's there's there's your balancing act.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
Right.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
It can spiral. I mean it can. It takes a
little bit of a swerve pretty quick. I'd love to
know where Joe Burrow is on the Trey hendricks and stuff,
wouldn't you?

Speaker 3 (04:54):
Yeah, because he went to bat public laf T Higgins
and Jamar and Jamar Chase.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
Yeah, right fully so because they're his weapons. Are you
going to bat for ninety seven that a boy ninety seven?
The dudes better at his position than t Higgins is
at his Yeah, Jamar Chase.

Speaker 4 (05:13):
But seriously, no, you're right, You're absolutely right about that.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Where's if you believe in leadership, if you believe a
guy has a say in something. I want to keep
this guy happy. I want to keep that guy happy.
Let's keep the captain happy happy. Joe, what do you
want in here in Cincinnati? And I don't mean a
table at the Montgomery in for ribs and steak every night.

(05:39):
I'm asking you what you want on your football team.
I want Trey Hendrickson, We better get it done. I
want t Higgins, We got it done. This is not
With all due respect to Mike GESICKI they're moving in
tight ends on a regular basis. This is the best
defensive player you have. And it is also one of

(06:05):
those situations where because they're so bad defensively and they are,
maybe they feel like one guy hasn't made a difference. Well,
your captain, their face of your franchise could change that.
I don't hear much about Joe Burrow when it comes

(06:26):
to the Trey Hendrickson. Maybe it's behind the scenes. I'll
try to give him some love there. I wonder if
any Lions are going behind the scenes to say, we
need Alexanzeloni. We got his back. He's a really important piece.
Who makes more money per year? Eric Anzelone or Alexanzeloni

(06:49):
or Robert Spellane who is a really good player at
Western Michigan. I think he went undrafted, became a captain
for the Raiders, now plays for the Patriots. Right yep, okay,
who makes more money?

Speaker 4 (07:07):
Uh, I'm guessing not Azeloni?

Speaker 2 (07:10):
Right splaining makes eleven million dollars a year.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
Well, how about this, chep? I saw this yesterday. That
dude is the.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
Tenth and I like him a lot. I liked him
at Western and I thought he was an absolute beast
with the Raiders. It's a great story, it really is.
He's the tenth According to sports Track, he's the tenth
highest paid linebacker in the National Football League. Yeah, that's
pretty high, now, do you think I'm not. We can't

(07:38):
always compare. It's probably unfair. A lot of this is timing,
as you mentioned before, a lot of this is timing. However,
if you're Alex, if you're Alex Angeloni, all right, and
you're his agent, and you're looking at things and you're going, Okay,
my guy's a captain. My guy has been four year captain.
He's done everything you've wanted to do. He's a year

(08:01):
older than Splaine. He's put up huge numbers as well.
Tell me why my guy deserves less? And Spallain's put
up huge numbers too. The last two years. He's had
over one hundred and forty five tackles in each of
those years, one forty eight, one fifty eight. That's a
lot of tackles. You're in on a lot of stuff.

(08:23):
Alexanzeloni two years ago, one hundred and twenty nine tackles,
three years ago, one hundred and twenty five. You gets
you one hundred and twenty one hundred and thirty tackles.
That's a lot you're in on a lot of stuff.
You're playing regularly. He got hurt last year, by the way,
he came back all right from the injury. He's playing

(08:44):
out there.

Speaker 4 (08:45):
Was there a broken arm, Yeah, he broke his arm.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Yeah, he's got a broken arm. But he's playing. You know,
I'm not trying to glorify him in that sense, because
there's a lot of guys in the NFL who've played
through that kind of snow.

Speaker 4 (08:55):
But that's how he feels.

Speaker 3 (08:56):
You know, he's looking at it like I broke my
arm and came back for you guys, pay me a
little bit more money, and rightfully so, he's not even
the highest paid linebacker in Detroit. By the way, did
you know that, shep I did know that Derek Barnes
makes eight million a year. Yeah, right, Alexandeloni currently makes
six point one.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
Six point one?

Speaker 1 (09:11):
Right?

Speaker 2 (09:12):
How does that sit?

Speaker 4 (09:14):
Not good?

Speaker 2 (09:15):
Well, if you're you don't, Let's look at it this
way too. If you're Jack Campbell, what do you make
eight fifty?

Speaker 3 (09:21):
No, he makes Jack Campbell makes uh three point sixty
eight million a year? Yes, oh, I didn't know that
that's a first round pick. So I mean he he
makes like half what Angeloni makes right now, Okay, but still,
I mean.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
He's got he's got a gripe two. Yeah, but not
that it's up. I'm just saying he's got a gripe
as well.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
But he doesn't have the leverage that Angeloni might have
because you know, he's still on his rookie contract.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
Correct, But he might have the gripe in the center,
or the leverage in the sense that I'm the future
of this defense, the middle of this defense and shep.

Speaker 3 (09:55):
Maybe that's how Brad Holmes is looking at this, like
why would we invest so much money in Angeloni when
we've got Jack Campbell coming up in the ranks who
looks like he could wear the green dot he did
when Angeloni was hurt. Maybe they have belief in him
and maybe that's their lining to thank you.

Speaker 2 (10:09):
Guys, Yeah, because you need more guys than that, right,
Not that it should be the be all end all,
but yeah, I mean, if you're looking at you're Eric,
You're Alex Angeloni, You're going, what the hell is happening here?
Where he makes less than some of those guys or
some players that, like you just mentioned, that's a tough

(10:33):
pill to swallow. Whether it's fair or unfair, it's a
tough pill to swallow. The guy is viewed as a
leader of this defense. And maybe I'm getting way too
caught up in the amount of money somebody makes per year,

(10:54):
but that's what players look at. They look at productivity
equals what That's what Terry McLaurin is looking at. That's
what Michaeh Parsons is looking at. So Trey Hendrickson is
looking at. In fairness, the Lions are probably like, wait
a minute, you're not in the same league at your
position as Michaeh Parsons, is it his or Terry McLaren

(11:17):
or Trey Hendrickson? And they would be right about that.
But do you think he's better than the thirty fifth linebacker? Yeah, football,
that's probably where he's at. Let's get to the text line.
Go ahead, Sports Radio twenty one thousand.

Speaker 3 (11:32):
What's up along these lines? Someone says, shop, what would
you do with Alexandeloni? On paper, he should make more
than six million, But I don't know if the Lions
can afford to prioritize him over some of the younger talent,
particularly on offense.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
I would extend him. The amount of money is a
good question, so answer answer me this quick question. How
much does Marcus Davenport make?

Speaker 4 (12:00):
I think it's like two million? Is that right? Let
me look that up real quick.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
I thought it was. I thought it was six and
a half. I thought it was six and a half.
I'm looking at sport Track right now, the roster and
the contract, so that Detroy Lions for twenty twenty five,
and I had Marcus Davenport at six and a half
or was that last year? Either way, that might have
been last year.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
I think he's currently he's on a four point seven
five million deal, four point seventy five. So split the
difference between you and I.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
Yeah, so it's a it's a it's a lot for
a guy who doesn't make much money. I would have
to you know, if I'm if I have Anzelone's camp,
I'm saying, come on, I mean, I'm looking at certain
linebackers and I'm saying to you, here's the cops. Okay,
if it's Spelane, if it's a Zi's Ali, sure, but

(12:50):
probably not so You're he's probably he's a he's an
elite linebacker. It's is it Zach Bond?

Speaker 1 (12:58):
No?

Speaker 2 (12:59):
Is it Bolton? Probably not? So Somewhere between the eleven
million of Spelane and what Angeloni is making now, is
that acceptable? The problem some players have is they'll come
out and they'll say, I want to retire Alion. Well,
that makes it sound really good in the public eye.

(13:21):
But here's how a backfire sign you. If you really
want to retire a Lion and they sign you to
an extension, Let's say it's a three year deal, a
three year extension. Look, that's what Pittsburgh did with TJ Watt.
TJ Watts arguably the best player at his position. I said, arguably,

(13:42):
he got a three year extension at age thirty. How
about extending Eric Alexanzeloni for three years? Okay, at whatever,
Let's say it's nine million dollars a year. What I
can't answer is how that affects Brad Holmes's bottom line,
how that affects his salary cap and what he has

(14:05):
plans and nobody knows is what he has to have
to plan for. He has to plan to extend Aiden
Hutchinson top priority. If healthy, He's got to extend. He's
got to expand, extend Jack Campbell, He's got to extend
Brian Branch, he has to extend if he wants Jamison Williams,

(14:27):
Jamiir Gibbs, Sam Laporta. Of those six, of those six,
where does Alex Anzeloni fit in that puzzle? Would you
extend him before you extended Campbell? Would you extend him

(14:49):
before you extended Branch? Would you extend him before you
extended Jamiir Gibbs. That's what I want you to answer.
I would extend him for three years, but it has
to be Lions cap friendly. I don't know what that
number is, but I would extend him. It's not like
you've got that. There's nobody within this system right now

(15:13):
that is ready to take that mantle. Campbell's the guy
moving forward. That's pretty obvious. You don't play with one linebacker.
So yes, to answer your question, I would extend him.
I'd extend him three years. It has to be the
right number for the Detroit Lions because of their young

(15:35):
This is the double edged sword you have. You have
a lot of these young, really good, high end players,
but are you going to be able to keep them
all and satisfy some of the veterans on your team.

Speaker 4 (15:49):
Well, sheppend.

Speaker 3 (15:49):
That's where the people that love the term window super
Bowl window, that's what they fall into. This is the
line of thinking, right, you have all these young players
on their rookie deals, before you have to start paying
them and making some tough decisions, you better win.

Speaker 4 (16:01):
Now.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
Every team has had to deal with this, folks. It's
going to be a tough pill to swallow. There's going
to be a lot of pissed off Lions fans sometime
in the near future because you're not keeping all these guys.
Kansas City couldn't keep all their guys. Philadelphia couldn't keep
all their guys. New England couldn't keep all their guys.
They kept certain key guys, they couldn't keep all of them.

(16:22):
That's happening for Detroit too, and it's happening soon. So
we've got to keep that in mind, all right. We
have to remember that and understand what allies for all
Lions fans. Alex Anzeloni, you may not think he's part
of the future, but perhaps there's a number that you
could come to grips with that will keep him here.

(16:45):
But it also might mean one of those guys that
you see as a young cornerstone doesn't stay here. Maybe
you weren't going to get him anyway. Maybe it was
going to be too much money for a guy like
Jamison Williams. Maybe it's going to be too much money
for Jamier Gibbs. Folks, I don't want to belittle it
because I want them all to stay here too, although

(17:08):
I think Williams is replaceable to a certain extent, probably
lowest on my priority because of the position more than
anything else, in the fact that you've got another guy
like that, and I'm on Ross Saint Brown. But remember this,
the Giants lost Saquon Barkley man. I mean it was
bad management. I understand that, but teams have lost key

(17:31):
members of their squad in the past, whether they be
first round picks or not. You can disagree with it.
But the Steelers got rid of George Pickens. The Lions
couldn't keep Darius Slay. It was stupid, but they didn't
do it. There are and he was a second round pick.
But you get my point. There are teams that have

(17:51):
really impactful players that eventually say goodbye to those impactful
players at the age of thirty or sometimes even be
We mentioned Dallas Ezekiel Ellott. Elliott left Dallas, so the
way it goes, that's going to happen here in Detroit too.
Will Alex Angeloni be part of that depends on exactly

(18:14):
how much his camp wants. If he wants the twelve
million dollars a year for his position, he's not going
to get it, and I wouldn't give it to him either,
