Speaker 4 (00:00):
I wanted to get to this.

Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is This is I think a pretty fascinating list.
ESPN ranked twenty twenty five's top fifty players this year.
What's going on right now, how they're playing right now?
How many Tigers do you think are on this list?

(00:25):
How many Tigers are a top fifty player?

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Does this include pictures?

Speaker 4 (00:32):
This includes pitchers? Two? Does two? Who would they be?

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Riley Green and arreor Schooble? Okay, maybe Labor Torres. There's
one at Schooble.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Okay, Given Riley Green's recent struggles, that doesn't surprise me.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
And the national view of him. Yeah, okay, Remember I
said fifty players.

Speaker 4 (00:58):
I was with you.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
I was thinking about this before before I look at
the list. I think to myself, definitely School was in there.
I'm just not sure how high he is. I would
guess he's a top ten player because I don't know
what they're you know, I didn't read through exactly what
they were measuring when it came to pitchers.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Yeah, what the criteria is?

Speaker 4 (01:15):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (01:16):
And then I thought about the everyday players, and I thought,
how many legitimately could you make an argument for I
know how much you love carry Carpenter but we're talking
about overall players, all right, We've got to be more
realistic in what we're talking about.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Yeah, there's no defense there none, right.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Right, So Riley Green, you get defense, and you get
some power and you get some hitting. But we focus
on the strikeouts an awful lot. Does the national members
on the media do that? I mean, if Kyle Schwarber
is on the list, if Aaron Judges on the list,
if a guy like you know, Elie de la Cruz
could be on the list, probably the strikeouts are are

(01:58):
an afterthought.

Speaker 3 (01:59):
They can be overlooked a little bit, but you have
to wonder. I mean, he's leading the league in that category.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
Yeah, that's so again, But I've said this before. Kyle
Schwarber has led the league, Aaron Judges had led the league.
Ellie dale Cruz isn't that far behind, you know what
I'm saying. So that's where.

Speaker 4 (02:14):
My mind is at. Your glabor Torre's possibility.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Is an interesting one.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
If that were the case, it would be very close
to the back end, like forty seven, forty eight, Like
maybe he sneaks in there.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
Sure, Again, I'm trying to reiterate to myself fifty players,
So Torres really did not enter my mind. So that's
an interesting one. You bring that up. I thought school
maybe green and like you just said green at the
very back forty eight, forty nine, fifties, somewhere along those lines. Remember,
I'm trying to measure them, or this list, I should say,

(02:52):
is measuring them against. I mean Aaron Judge is won.
We're talking about top fifty players here. Show Ayotani's two,
Trek's Schooble is three. And what they do is they
give you what they've done so far this year and
what you can expect moving forward. We know what he's done,

(03:17):
what they expect moving forward from Terrek Scoobel.

Speaker 4 (03:22):
Is.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
With Cleveland drawing closer in the division, it will be
interesting to see if the Tigers push schoobl a little harder.
He has made six starts on four days rest this season.
Remember he's been pushed back during this road trip too. Okay,
but since the All Star break he has gone eight days,

(03:42):
five days, six days and five days between starts. Really
good information there. I haven't picked that up, have you now?
Have you noticed they have pushed his starts back? I
didn't now the All Star break his eight days I
get that. I mean, he pitched in the All Star Game,

(04:04):
he started in the All Star Game, but I hadn't
recognized that he had gone five days, six days, five
days between starts. Why are they resting him so much?
He threw one hundred and ninety two innings last year,
says he wants to throw two hundred innings. Only four
guys threw two hundred innings a year ago, and one
of them was right at two hundred innings.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
Do you think with the loss of job Ann Olsen
that they know the Tiger's staff knows that they're going
to have to rely on school a little bit more,
and they're trying to, like I don't know, lighting his
workloads so that they can get more out of him
towards the backhend.

Speaker 4 (04:37):
Maybe.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
Yeah, I wonder about the latter part of your statement.
I think they knew whether job is healthy or Olsen
is healthy or not.

Speaker 4 (04:44):
I don't think that mattered. They knew they were going
to rely on him.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
Okay, that's going to rely on a triple Crown winner
who wouldn't, right?

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Yeah, good point.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
But the latter part of your statement is a good one.
I don't I don't know what they're doing. I wonder
why they're doing it.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
But that is, like you just laid out, that is
a trend. So we have to read into that a
little bit. There must be a reason that you should
read into it.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Yeah, you want to keep him strong for the postseason,
but you need to get there first. That's from David Schoenfield.
Keeping him strong for the postseason. It makes me wonder,
why why is it that there's I mean, if they're

(05:34):
making this every eight days, six days, five days, do
you think they're worried about his strength for the postseason?
Do they look at last year and say he might
have worn down? And if he did wear down, shouldn't
that concern us that a guy didn't reach two hundred

(05:55):
innings and he was worn down in the playoffs. That's
a lot of reading into stuff. That's a lot of assumption,
and I don't want to assume that. I'm just thinking
out loud here. I think if they're resting him this much,
and look, you gotta win the division, for grind out loud.
Cleveland's now five and a half, they're playing good ball

(06:19):
in all likelihood likelihood, now they're not going away. The
chances of you winning by double digits, making you and
I feel much more comfortable. Are probably not as high
as they were before. Is that fair? Okay? So why
is it they're resting Schooble so much? Maybe it's because
of this. Before you had the five guys. Right now

(06:46):
you've added to your bullpen. Not a huge Montero fan,
but you've added to your bullpen of guys you can
throw longer. I hate to put it this way, but
Raphael Montero is not going to be back with you
next year.

Speaker 4 (06:57):
Throw the hell out. Throw his arm out. Go ahead, start,
just throw as much as you possibly can. Chris Paddock's
not going to be here next year. Throw as much
as you can. Charlie Morten is not going to be
here next year. Throw as much as you can.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
That's a great way to look at it. Actually, shep
so that might be part of the mentality. They'd never
admit that, but that could be part of it. It's
the day's rest trent that I'm confused at. Yeah, I
don't think trek Skuble wants this. You and I talked

(07:29):
about it yesterday. He's made it known. I want to
throw two hundred innings. That's a threshold. I want to
reach He needed another start perhaps to but most likely
one start of eight innings a year ago to reach
that mark. I don't think it's a huge deal in
today's baseball, or I should in baseball, but in today's baseball,

(07:51):
maybe it is. Okay, he's gonna throw two hundred innings, will.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
Be Yeah, it seems like more of a Tarrek Schooble thing,
like he wants to do that for his own pride,
and you know, it's just a benchmark for him. But
it's not like they give out awards for going two
hundred innings, And if.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
They do, why not just give everybody an award for participation.

Speaker 4 (08:16):
For Christ's sakes. It's ridiculous anyway.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
So Schooble's three, Cal Raley is four, Bobby witt Junior five,
Paul Skeen six. He got lit up last night. Paul
Sken's got torched by Milwaukee last night.

Speaker 4 (08:31):
Yeah, that was not any that. Did you see it?

Speaker 2 (08:34):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (08:34):
I watched the highlights or the low lights if you
want to call it that from his perspective.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
Yeah, it was a fourteen nothing win for Milwaukee. I
know Pittsburgh's not very good, So you're like, well, come on.
You're beating Pittsburgh. I'm just telling you, you're beating one
of their guys, one of their key guys.

Speaker 4 (08:56):
They're eight.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
He gave up a couple of homers. He gave up
six hits in four innings of four and runs. Maybe
that's not being lit up, but from.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
A poll by his standards, Yeah, yeah, by.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
His standards, I think that's it's fair to say anyway.
So Skins is six, Pete crow Armstrong, who I think
should be higher, is seven. Jose Ramirez, who had two
bombs last night, is eight. Trent, You and I both
know what's our favorite saying when it comes to baseball,
and the player who probably is the most underrated, usually

(09:29):
Jose Ramirez is in that discussion with me. Phenomenal player.
Zach Wheeler nine, Garret Crochet ten. Now you're wondering where
would a Riley Green fit in? Kyle Tucker eleven.

Speaker 4 (09:43):
Nope, wouldn't fit in there.

Speaker 1 (09:44):
Juan Soto twelve. It's pretty low for a guy who makes,
you know, seven hundred and fifty million dollars. Fernando Tatist
Junior thirteen, Kyle Schwarber. This is the reason when I'm
reading through this I'm like, oh, strikeouts, Okay, Kyle Schwarber's four,
What did I say? Ellie de la Cruz is fifteen.

(10:07):
So when I mentioned those, I've mentioned three names who
strike out a lot historically, Judge, Schwarber, De la Cruz.
If they're in it, this is I'm giving you my mindset.
If they're in it. While I'm reading this list, I'm
thinking to myself, maybe, just maybe Riley Green could be

(10:30):
in it. That's a selfish and a Homerism type of mindset.

Speaker 3 (10:38):
Well, you're also looking at it from clearly whoever put
this list together, they're not putting a whole lot of
stock in a strikehouse. They're telling you that based on,
like you said, having Ellie de la Cruz and Schwarber
and Judge as high as they do. And by the way,
I think those guys belong there, Oh absolutely, But it's
just a matter of they're not putting a whole lot
of stock in a strikehoffs because those guys strike out

(10:58):
a ton.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
Two.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
Yeah, Ellie Cruiz has one hundred and thirty one strikeouts.
Now that's not second most, but I think he finished
second a year ago, or it was second at some
point earlier.

Speaker 4 (11:08):
This year.

Speaker 1 (11:09):
Riley Green, as you know, leads all of baseball one
hundred and fifty seven. Shoey Otani has struck out one
hundred and forty five times. I don't know if people realize.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
That that's not far behind.

Speaker 4 (11:22):
Carl Schwarber has struck out one hundred and forty two times.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
The guy many people wanted in a Tiger's uniform, a
Uhanio Suarez because of the home run power, has struck
out one hundred and thirty three times. Now, it's not
as many as Riley Green, I get it. I'm just
telling you those are those are the facts anyway. So
Ellie Day La Cruz at fifteen, Will Smith at sixteen,

(11:47):
underrated Manny Machado, Corbyn Carrol, you know, all really good players,
Katel Marte, Jeremy Pana, Julio Rodriguez who's been a red hot,
Wayne State's Hunter Brown is at twenty three, Vladimir Carrera Junior,
Francisco Lindor, who has struggled mightily recently, Byron Buxton who's
always hurt, Yoshi Yamamoto who got lit up, Framber Valdez,

(12:12):
Kyle Stowers. And that's the one. When I read I'm
like Kyle Stowers. Holy cow, he's in there. He's part
of the Orioles and was sent to Miami. Max Fried
at thirty, Gunner Henderson, Trey Turner, Bryce Harper, Nick Kurtz,
Joe Ryan, I'm going okay, Corey Seeger Suarez. It's the

(12:34):
reason I bring up the strikeouts, Okay, Logan Webb, Nathan Valdi,
Freddie Freeman should be higher. Jacob de Gram, Pete Alonzo,
who just passed Daryl Strawberry for most home runs in
a Mets career. Boba Schett made a great play last
night at forty three. Heeraldo Perdomo. James Wood is at

(12:57):
forty five, and the reason I bring this up, there's
a reason I've written listed all fifty of them. James
Wood is second in all of baseball and strikeouts with
one hundred and fifty two.

Speaker 4 (13:07):
He's got fewer RBIs, he's got fewer.

Speaker 1 (13:10):
Homers, He's got almost as many strikeouts as Riley Green,
and he hits for a ten points lower average. But
he's on the list at forty five. Then it's George Springer,
Matthew Boyd, Cody Bellinger, Alex Bregman, and Matt Chapman.

Speaker 4 (13:37):
One Tiger A reality check.
