Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let me read you a quote, and I want you
to tell me what you think it might be associated with.
This is an athlete saying I think his mental game
is better than anybody out there. To be able to
play with those expectations and to stay present as often
he has, to me is maybe more impressive than anything

(00:21):
else than the game he's playing. He just doesn't make
many mistakes and almost kind of lets himself be in
contention versus forcing himself in contention. What do you think
that's associated with? It's golf. That is justin Thomas talking

(00:41):
about Scotty Scheffler. Now you know, Scotty Scheffler is the
best player in the world. He's been the best player
in the world for the last three years. It's really
not close. I know people wanted to jump on the
Rory McElroy bandwagon earlier this year, and look, Rory McElroy
may win at Oakmont this week, win the US Open.
I don't know. Hard to believe after missing the cut

(01:05):
at the Canadian Open. But that's what golf is. I mean,
golf can be up and it can be down. I mean,
it's a wave and that's what makes Scheffler's so damn impressive,
the fact that he is so steady and the fact
that he made bogie, but it doesn't unnerve him. One
hole doesn't ruin the next. And I think what you

(01:26):
learn from him and other great professionals, you can carry
that over into other sports. You can't let a cornerback
cannot allow one touchdown, pass, one guy getting by him,
one biting on a double move, burn him for a
second time, otherwise you know eventually he's going to get pulled.

(01:47):
One pitcher can't allow the fact that he gave up
a home run on a ninety five mile an hour
cutter and never throw the pitch again. Right, You can't
do that. Just because you are oh for not from
the floor doesn't mean you stop shooting in basketball. So
the mental aspect of it is amazing. And Justin Thomas

(02:08):
said this about Scotti Scheffler as he gets ready to
play at Oakman and it's such a hard sport from
a mental standpoint. Last week we were at tully Moore,
had a great time. They're broadcasting live. Matt Golden his
staff are fantastic. Played Tullymore before Trenton and I played

(02:28):
Saint Ives. Really nice course, narrow with times I really
enjoyed it. Okay, you got to hit the ball straight. Yeah,
I was fortunate, Lass. I played pretty well, And I
was really fortunate because first of all, I love the company.
But gorgeous day and just an awesome course, phenomenal, Okay,
capped off a two day span where you're just like,

(02:51):
I can't believe I get paid to do this stuff.
You know, you're having dinner with Lindsay Hunter and all
these different people associated with a Lindsay Hunter Foundation, and
they were so gracious, and you're being you know, you're
working with people at a resort that you truly believe in.
You know, you're staying on the grounds that are just
so picturesque you want to take picture after picture and

(03:13):
it's just an awesome place and with really good people.
But I was thinking about it because it's a challenge.
You know, you don't want to go and chop up
a golf course. You want the golf course to challenge you.
Hit every club in the bag, make sure the greens
are nice, the tea boxes are nice. I get all
of that absolutely, and Tully Moore insane ives it. It's awesome.

(03:35):
But Scheffler earlier this year, I remember people were saying,
he's he's this could be the year he's catchable. Somebody
may override him. In the world of golf. He struggled
a little bit at the beginning. It was March. I
think we even talked about it, like, wait a minute,

(03:55):
I still think he's the best in the world. Let's
be careful on overreacting every what he does. It's not
just fans. People in the media overreact all the time. Okay,
But since the struggle over the last two and a
half months, Scotti Scheffler's worst finish is a tie for
eighth at the RBC Heritage. Okay, he has six top

(04:20):
five finishes. He's won three times in his last four starts,
including the PGA Championship, and he's the favorite to win
at ok mind. Now, I love golf. I watch it
every weekend. I love the majors, especially golf. I'll watch
every weekend Tennis. No way, will I watch the US

(04:42):
Open while I watch, you know, the French Open, Wimbledon.
Absolutely I'll do that. I'll watch near the end. I'm
not gonna I'm not gonna start watching it on Monday, Okay.
I don't care about the one hundred and eleventh rank
player in the world playing you know, the three seat,
but I will watch it on the we at golf.
I'll watch all the time. I have watched more and

(05:03):
more Live Golf because of names and specifically will I
will admit this, specifically because of a guy like Bryson Deshambo.
He's become more entertaining, he's become more popular, more likable,
and we've talked about that before. The president of Live
Golf was in Metro Detroit yesterday. Originally I was scheduled

(05:28):
to go out there and then plans changed. But his
name is Scout O'Neil, and he said this about bringing
the Live Tour and I believe it's its final event
in August, all right, because you've got the Rocket Mortgic
Rocket Mortgage Classic taking place at Detroit Golf Club in Detroit.

(05:50):
It's a great event. But at the end of August
at the Cardinal in Saint John's, that's where the Live
Golf Team Championship is going to be played. I think
a lot of people at first were like, wow, I mean,
you're gonna come to Michigan for this. Here's what Scott
O'Neil said, And maybe it's maybe it's fluff. It could be,

(06:11):
but usually people are held to their quotes, so it
should be true. He said, the most important thing is
that this is a place, the state. That's what I'm
referring to, is where our players wanted to come. I
heard from several players that used to play in the
Rocket Mortgage Classic, and one would assume that it's Dustin

(06:33):
Johnson who played there, Phil Mickelson who played there, Joaquin
Neeman who played there, Bryson Deshamba who played there and
won in twenty twenty. He said, several players that used
to play in the Rocket Mortgage Classic, how much they
enjoyed the tracks, the crowds, and the market. It's no

(06:55):
secret this is an incredible golf state. Golf events do
jraordinarily well here. Thus the question, that's the reason I
asked that Mitch Lionswealth dot Com poll question of the
day is Michigan The state of Michigan a golf state

(07:19):
when you have places and we've said this, look, Meyer's
sponsoring this hour. But Meyer does a wonderful job, and
I mean this sincerely because we broadcast live from there
last year, a wonderful job in hosting the LPGA tournament
on the west side of the state. First rate runs
so well, and I've been to I've covered a lot

(07:42):
of golf events now I will admit all of them
in the state of Michigan. But I covered the Ryder
Cup when it was here. I've covered the US Open
when it was here. I've covered the Junior Championships when
it was here. I've covered the Buick Open at Warwick
Hills for years on a regular basis, the Seniors Tour
at the TPC of Dearborn. I know when something is

(08:06):
done right, So there's plenty of experience in my golf
bag of covering golf events, and that LPG event at
Meyer LPG event really well done. And I'm glad that
the live tours here because they're going to get the
chance to experience just how well we attend things and

(08:31):
just how well we in general the state put on events.
It's one of the underrated things I think this state does,
or groups do. So I did some stuff with the
Detroit Sports Commission not too long ago. They have really
done Yeoman's work in trying to get more and more
big events here. NCAA basketball, college football events right US

(08:55):
opens at the Oakland Hills all those things. You need
a governing body, You need some going to bat for
you if you want, if your state wants to host
these types of things, you've got to have people who
believe in you. So Meyer with the LPGA, as we've
mentioned US Open, just as we come here because Oakland

(09:15):
Hill says, you know, we want a US Open. No,
the Detroit Sports Commission has to pitch it. They have
to say, this is what we've got going on. I
was at bed Rocky yesterday in downtown Detroit, owned by
Dan Gilbert who owns Rocket and a number of just
a ton of companies one hundred and twenty plus buildings

(09:37):
downtown Detroit and is putting up a Skyrives building that
will be one for business and it's almost like a three.
It's like a it looks like three buildings in one.
But the middle building is going to be the first
five star hotel in the city of Detroit and they

(10:00):
have broken ground on that. And that's only going to
help because more and more people are going to downtown Detroit.
But I love the fact that we've got these golf
events spread out over our great state, Grand Rapids, Midland, Plymouth, Detroit.
You can go to a Warwick Hills where the seniors

(10:23):
oftentimes play. There's so many great areas to get your
golf game on and get away, you know. I mentioned
just last week we were at Tullymore. What a getaway, right,
I have a well do a golf outing during the
summer with the friends of mine who used to be

(10:44):
in high school and really in junior high and some
of them I've known since first grade and we've been
playing golf regularly and it's really fun to catch up
with everybody. And they come from all over the country,
you know. Guys come from California, Guys come from you know,
down south Atlanta, as close as Illinois, Minnesota. They're all
over the place and it's awesome for them to come back.

(11:06):
And the one thing they always tell me of love
going to play golf in northern Michigan. And a couple
of years ago we went to Tullymore, played Tullymore played
Saint Ives. I did not because I was coined Tigers
at the time. But when we were gathering earlier this
year during the wintertime and figuring out where we want

(11:28):
to go, you know, obviously Tullymore Saint Ives is right there.
I'm like, man We had so much fun there. The
place to stay was so convenient and first rate, the
food was so good, the service, all that stuff. Right.
We've got a lot of places like that. And I've
talked to Matt Golden about that too at Tellymore, where

(11:50):
he said he encourages people to go in different parts
of the state. We want you to because he's more
of the State of Michigan kind of guy than just
a Tullymore guy. Sure he's a Tullymore guy, but he
wants what's best for the state. It's called a team player, right.
It's really good stuff. But I love the fact that

(12:11):
more and more people recognize that it's not just one area. Okay,
And I remember anybody who comes to this state and
hasn't been here before, been around very long, or is
new to the area, I say to them, make sure
you explore the state. Don't get caught in a bubble.

(12:34):
Don't just be in one certain area. Branch out. And
I don't mean if you're in Metro Detroit going to
Birmingham or Royal Loak. Those are all great and it's
all fine, but make sure you're trying the west side
of the state. Make sure you're going to Grand Haven,
check out Sagatuk and South Haven. Make sure you're going
up north. You've got to look at Potoski and Charlavoy

(12:55):
and Harbor Springs. You've got to make sure you are
experiencing every everything we as Michiganders get to experience and
oftentimes take for granted too often the possibilities of seeing
the beautiful state of Michigan. But also, if you're a

(13:15):
golf lover, I mean, if you are a player who
just loves to tee it up and smack it around.
Branch out in that regard to played Saturday morning with
some friends and asked them if they've played certain play
They've all played Tellymore, they've been there. But I've asked
them if they've played different courses primarily in this area,

(13:38):
but you know, branching out a little bit closer to
the west side of the state. No, we haven't. My question,
my fob question is always well why not? And it's
probably more about convenience than anything else. But I've said, you, guys,
he's getting up in age. You got to take the
time to go and play some of these other courses,

(14:00):
not just the ones that are in your backyard. And
that you know so well because there's nothing. I mean,
it is so enjoyable to experience these well manicured pieces
of land that you get a chance to play golf in.
And because our window was so short, right, I mean,
how quickly do you want to I mean, Trent and

(14:21):
I were there last week. You want to go back
next week? To tell themore in sant Ives, I came home,
had some pictures, talk to only two of my three
sons play golf. Talk to them about it, the experience
I had last week, and they're like, Dad, you told
us last summer where we were going to go. I
want to go. Let's go up, stay a night, play

(14:43):
Tellymore one day, stay in the night, and play Saint
Ives the next day and then we can come home.
But we've got to go. I'm like, I get it.
I want them to experience all the things that I've
had the chance to experience. But I would also encourage
a lot of people go to that LPGA Meyer Classic,
go to the live represent the state, so these places

(15:04):
recognize just how much we love this sport and want
to keep coming back. I think it's great to hear
from tournament presidents like Scott O'Neill. I'm sure every place
he goes to, I'm sure they're saying how important it
is to play there, and that his golfers in his
league want to do this right, wanted to be here.

(15:25):
I get it. So perhaps we're not super special, we're
only made to feel special for a period of time.
But there are a lot of players who do enjoy
coming to this state and playing these courses. And there's
a lot of guys who have designed, whether it be
Jack Nicholas, whether it be Tom Wiskoff. Tom Watson's into

(15:46):
that now of designing courses. I was reading an article
the other day about a certain place that is pretty
well known for its golf in the state of Michigan,
but somebody knew has taken it over and they're going

(16:08):
to redesign the entire thing. Because you're getting more and
more of these leagues of these tournaments reaching out and
saying we want to be part of this resurgence or
this surgence of what's going on in the state of Michigan.
Should make us all feel really good.
